This report, dealing with the separation of coal from its associated impurities by means of a pulsator-type jig, continues the series of reports that have been issued by the Bureau of Mines, in which detailed study has been made of the efficiency and mechanism of separating coal and impurities in various coal-cleaning appliances. The previous reports have dealt with the piston jig, coal-washing table, pneumatic table, and Baum-type jig.5/ Such studies of the separation accomplished by any form of concentration device are essential and necessarily preliminary to any intelligent attempt to improve the performance of such equipment Object and Plan The pulsator-type jig was developed recently by G. A. Vissac. Although two articles(2) describing plants using this type of cleaning unit appeared in 1936, both dealt principally with plant design and layout rather than with plant performance The object of the stork described in this report was to determine the efficiency of the separation made by the pulsator jig on a sized feed, the specific gravity at which the separation between coal and impurity was effected, and the influence of the specific-gravity composition of the coal on the character of the separation made.

Aragonite, co-occurring with calcite and dolomite as matrix minerals, has been discovered in Mahogany zone oil shales of Colorado's Eocene Green River Formation, posing puzzles on the geochemical patterns of their separate origins, reasons for their simultaneous existence, and their interrelation. The presence of aragonite is demonstrated by X-ray diffraction. Amounts of aragonite and dolomite are significantly and inversely related, but the calcite quantity is essentially independent of either aragonite or dolomite quantity. A geochemical pattern outlining the deposition conditions that created the Green River Formation oil shale is postulated from characteristics of the oil shale. The development of the three separate carbonates--aragonite, calcite, and dolomite--the inverse relationship between aragonite and dolomite, and the independence of amounts of calcite and the other two carbonates are shown to be natural consequences of this oil-shale genesis pattern.

The Bureau of Mines conducted tests on samples of two Florida phosphate slimes t6 devise a technique to recover phosphate currently dis-carded because of its fine size. A flotation technique was devised to recover the phosphate contained in two fractions of each slime: the plus 37um fraction and the plus 20-um fraction. The technique involved conditioning the flotation feed with sodium silicate and a fatty acid-fuel oil emulsion, floating a rougher phosphate concentrate, and cleaning the concentrate in two cleaner stages with sodium silicate added to each for gangue depression. Concentrates containing 21.0 to 32.3 pct P20S were produced with recoveries of 68.1 to 84.2 pct of the P20S con-tained in the flotation feed.

The Bureau of Mines studied the presplitting technique used for controlling overbreakage in the walls of a vertical shaft at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Littleville Dam project near Huntington, Mass. The periphery of the shaft, the dimensions of which were 16-1/2 feet wide by 21 feet long and 52 feet deep, was presplit (cracked) in the solid to a depth of 48 feet prior to full-depth sinking. Presplitting prevented overbreak in a fairly soft schist and provided sound self-supporting walls which required very little scaling.

"The interaction of amorphous 1ilica particles with several hydrogen bonding agents (H2O, C2H5OH, C7H2NO) was investigated by monitoring the changes in the bulk and surface IR vibrational modes of silica using photoacoustic spectroscopy. It is argued that the intensity of the silanol band at 3747 cm-1 provides (an inverse) quantitative measure of the interaction or surface groups, along with the shift in the broad hydroxyl band, the interaction following the order C7H2NO > C2H5OH > H2O. Index Headings: Silica; Surface vibrational modes; Photoacoustic spectroscopy; Hydrogen bonding agents.INTRODUCTIONThe use of m spectroscopy to study the adsorption on solid surfaces is well documented in the literature.1 2 For example, hydroxylation of a clean silica surface results in the formation of the free silanol group Si-OH, with a sharp IR band near 3747 cm-1• Further hydroxylation produces a broad band near 3500 cm-1, which is believed to result from various hydrogen-bonded silanol bands leading to a multilayered surface structure of few nm.3-5 Earlier studies had indicated a relationship between the surface silanol band and various chemical activities of silica such as cytotoxicity, 7- 9 catalysis, 10-12 and others.13 Recent studies from our group14-in which the intensity of the silanol band and cytotoxicity of silica, heat-treated at various temperatures up to 1095°C, were investigated have provided a strong correlation between cytotoxicity and intensity of the silanol band.Coating of silica by PVPNO (polyvinyl-2-pyridine N-oxide with the empirical formula C7H8NO), a strong hydrogen bonding agent, is known to reduce the cytotoxicity of silica, presumably by chemically blocking the silanol groups from phospholipids.15 This interaction of the hydrogen bonding agents with the silica can be studied by m spectroscopy, and Knozinger16 and Rouxlet and Semples11 have used transmission m spectroscopy to study the effect of various chemicals on the surface IR modes of silica. However, one of the major disadvantages of transmission IR spectroscopy is that the sample preparation (grinding and mixing with KBr and pelletizing) usually distorts the surface modes (see, e.g., Ref. 14) and there is always a doubt about the effect of the sample preparation on the measured properties. In recent years, photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopy has become the technique of choice for studying the IR spectra of samples in their natural state, since no sample preparation is necessary.18•19 Moreover, according to a recent paper, 20 the relative intensity of the surface modes in PA spectroscopy of silica particles is much higher than that in transmission FT-IR spectroscopy. Consequently PA spectroscopy is ideal for studying the surface chemistry. In this work, we have used PA spectroscopy to investigate the interaction of three hydrogen bonding agents (C7H8NO, C2H50H, and H20) with the silica surface by monitoring changes in the surface m modes. Our results show that the surface IR modes get perturbed to a larger extent than the bulk IR modes in interaction with the hydrogen bonding agents. Moreover, whereas in the earlier studies, the shift of the broad silanol band near 3500 cm-1 was used as a measure of the interaction with hydrogen bonding agents,16•17 here we show that the relative decrease in the intensity of the sharp silanol band near 3747 cm-1 also serves as a quantitative parameter for the relative surface coverage and surface modification. This U.S. Bureau of Mines study was conducted in eastern Kentucky drift mines as part of an ongoing research program to characterize the outcrop barrier zone. "Hillseams" were identified as the dominant geologic cause of roof instability unique to the outcrop barrier zone, with many roof fall injuries and fatalities attributed to them. Hillseam is the eastern Kentucky miners term for weather-enlarged tension joints that occur in shallow mine overburden where surface slopes are steep. Hillseams are most conspicuous within 200 ft laterally of a coalbed outcrop and under 300 ft or less of overburden. Hillseams form by stress relief, and therefore tend to parallel topographic contours and ridges. They can intersect at various angles, especially under the nose of a ridge, and create massive blocks or wedges of roof prone to failure. Examples of hillseams are described in both outcrop and in coal mine roof to establish their geologic character and contribution to roof failure.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the up-and-down method with factorial designs to determine if shorter, and therefore less costly, trial sequences could be used. Although sequences of 50 trials are usually recommended, sequences of 20 trials were arbitrarily chosen for the experiments with permissible coal mine explosives described in this report. These explosives were fired from a cannon pointed into a flammable natural gas-air atmosphere at the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center gallery to ascertain their safety properties. The investigation demonstrated that the shorter sequences led to useful conclusions with a reduction in cost of the experimental program.

In order to evaluate the corrosion resistance of zirconium in mineral extraction processes, such as a clay-hydrochloric acid leaching process for extracting alumina, the Bureau of Mines conducted corrosion studies in HCl-AlC13-FeC13 environments. A series of weight loss and electrochemical tests were conducted at 25° and 65° C in aluminum chloride (AlC13) plus hydrochloric acid (HCl) solutions containing 0 to 1,000 ppm ferric ion. It was determined that zirconium, which normally exists in a passive state in chloride-containing solutions, undergoes pitting attack in solutions containing more than 100 ppm of ferric ion. It is also shown that an oxide film prepared in air at high temperature offers protection in acid solutions containing levels of ferric ion from 300 to 1,000 ppm.

As a part of a research program designed to help minimize national requirements for new mineral commodities by maximizing recovery of metals from domestic secondary resources, the Bureau of Mines investigated the development of economic methods for recovering copper and associated metals from complex electronic scrap. Three types were selected for research: (1) multiple-pin plugs and connectors, (2) obsolete aircraft radio assemblies, and (3) the magnetic fraction of shredded electronic scrap furnished by the Bureau's Avondale Research Center. The plugs and connectors, after incineration to remove plastic components and melting, yielded a brittle ingot, as did the internal portion of the radio assemblies. The brittle ingots were ground to minus 35-mesh for processing, and the magnetic material was used in the as-received condition. A process using pretreated or raw scrap as a copper precipitant in various concentrations of acidulated copper sulfate solution was developed as a means of effecting an initial separation and upgrading in the form of high-grade cement copper containing all or most of the precious metals.

Low-temperature heat capacities and the enthalpy of formation were deter-mined calorimetrically by the Bureau of Mines for CuO?CuS04. The derived standard entropy (S°298.15) was 40.36±0.04 cal/deg-mole, and the enthalpy of formation (?H°f) was -219.l±0.3 kcal/g-mole. A large thermal anomaly was observed in the heat capacity of CuO?CuS04 at 20±0.1 K. Gibbs energy of formation data are tabulated up to 1,200 K. Construction details of a precision low-temperature adiabatic calorimeter capable of determining heat capacities of solids in the temperature range 5 to 320 K are given. A calibrated miniature germanium resistance thermometer was incorporated into the calorimeter to extend the range of accurate measurements below 15 K. High-resistance dc heater windings were used throughout the cryostat to reduce heat conduction of inner connecting wires.

Hydrogen sulfide was decomposed to elemental sulfur in an electrical discharge. With He, N., or Ar diluents, a threshold voltage between 1 and 3 kV was required for the decomposition reaction to occur in a laboratory ozonizer. Above the threshold voltage, the HAS decomposition rate increased with increasing voltage, but the increase was more pronounced with argon diluent than with either nitrogen or helium. In common with other reactions in an electrical discharge, the B2S decomposition decreased with increasing temperature in the range of -410 to +61° C. The reaction did not appear to be rate-controlled by a solid-gas sorption step because the introduction of activated charcoal into the electrical discharge zone did not significantly affect the decomposition yield. In the presence of polymeric chlorofluoro-carbon oil, 90 pct conversion of the 3 pct H2S in helium was obtained at 14 kV, 60 Hz, a 2-mm electrode gap, and a gas-residence time greater than 1 min. Under the same experimental conditions in the absence of oil, the conversion was only about 50 pct.

In this report, the Bureau of Mines presents a method for reducing the complexity of designing room-and-pillar mining systems by treating them as anisotropic soft inclusions in the surrounding ore or host rock. Theoretical models were derived for the calculation of the effective Young's moduli for these systems. The predicted behavior of the plate-type elements used in these models agreed well with test results from 21 plates each with 49 holes spaced on a 7 X 7 Cartesian grid. The plates behaved as anisotropic solids, the effective Young's moduli of which could be predicted from the scaled hole size and spacing. Actual hole shape was insignificant. The effective Young's moduli for simple mining systems are calculated in sample problems. This approach should provide information about field stress in the mining region and the stress distribution in the surrounding ore or host rock when the actual mining configuration is replaced by an anisotropic inclusion in a finite element analysis. The field stress within the inclusion can then be applied to the actual opening shape to determine the stress distribution within the mining region.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting a study of methods to improve the efficiency of the process used to pickle stainless steels. A review of the literature on pickling of stainless steels showed that the chemistry of several process operations involved in the pickling of stainless steels is not fully understood, and that further research could improve the pickling efficiency. The benefits of this research would be a reduction in the annual loss of several thousands of tons of critical minerals such as nickel and chromium, and a reduction in the amount of solids and spent acid solution that are currently discarded. The conclusion from this review is that further research is needed in four operations that either directly or indirectly influence the pickling process: hot working, annealing, conditioning, and the actual operation of pickling, Laboratory studies of the pickling operation are presently in progress.

This paper describing the operations of the Cresson mine of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. at Cripple Creek, Colorado, is one of a series of papers on mining methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Cresson has recently been the most, important mine in the Cripple Creed district. During 1932 and 1933 an average of 230 tons of new ore (excluding dump material) that averaged about $10 in gold was shipped daily; 150 to 175 men were employed. Stoping was by the shrinkage method exclusively. The ore was screened washed, and hand-sorted at the surface and shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs for treatment. A considerable proportion of the production was made by lessees working under the so-called "split-check" system. The effect of low percentages of methane (0 to 5 pet.) in an air atmosphere on spark initiated explosions of coal dust was investigated. With low dust concentrations (0.1 to 0.4 oz./cu, ft.), small amounts of methane increase the explosion pressure; with larger dust concentrations (0.5 to 2.0 oz./cu. ft.), small amounts of methane decrease the explosion pressure. The rate of pressure rise of a coal dust explosion increases with increase in methane concentration; about 3 to 4 pct. further addition of methane yields a decrease in the rate of pressure rise. Convection currents created by the air or gas blast used to disperse dust produce an increase in explosion pressure and rate of pressure rise. The minimum explosive concentration of the coal dust decreases about linearly as the concentration of methane increases from 0 to 5 pct. The explosion pressure increases linearly as the initial pressure within the chamber increases. Similarities between coal dust and methane explosions are indicated, INTRODUCTION During coal mining, methane occluded in coal or adjoining strata is liberated into the mine atmosphere,4 Normally, the methane is diluted and swept away by the ventilating air. Under some conditions, through accidental disruption of the ventilation system, sudden outburst, or because insufficient fresh air is supplied to a working place, low percentages of methane may be present during mining operations. If it is permitted to accumulate, methane itself presents an explosion hazard; its limits of explosibility arc approximately 5 and 15 pct. The separations achieved by eight conventional cyclone washers have been evaluated to determine their performance when processing intermediate size coal of 28 mesh bottom size. The dense-medium cyclones provided efficient, sharp separations in treating feeds of up to 44 percent of near-gravity material at separating specific gravities ranging from 1.42 to 1,55 (one separation of a secondary feed was made at 1.63). Complete washability analyses are shown by sizes of the composite feed to these cyclones. The magnetite losses per ton of coal processed ranged from 0.6 to 2.0 pounds; however, of the eight plants reporting losses, seven indicated magnetite losses were 1.1 pounds or less per ton of coal processed.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines on tunneling methods. The tunneling methods described are those used at the Ojuela unit of the Compania Minera de Penoles, S. A., the Mexican subsidiary of the American Metal Co., Ltd., of New York. The Ojuela unit is situated some 4 miles southeast of Mapimi, Durango. Mexico, the latter place being connected by a 15-mile narrow-gage railway with the standard gage railroad at Bermejillo, some 40 miles to the north of Torreon, the location of one of the company's smelters.
