THE INUNDATION of anthracite reserves in the Eastern Middle field of Pennsylvania affects the life of the anthracite industry in this field; it also influences the economic status of people, communities, and industries that depend wholly or in part upon anthracite for their livelihood. The trends of production and of employment in the anthracite-mining industry in this field are downward, and they probably will continue in this direction. The reserves have been depleted to the extent that the end of the active life of the industry as a. major economic factor is approaching. By removing the water in those pools where it can be done economically, the future of this industry may be extended somewhat.

Driving long development raises probably is one of the most hazardous and expensive operations in underground mining. The safe handling of men and materials becomes more difficult and more time consuming in the higher sections of the raise. The efficient ventilation of these sections often is a major problem. This information circular describes a unique method by which Resurrection Mining Co, safely and efficiently completed a 622-foot vertical raise at its Irene shaft near Leadville, Colo. The method used by the company involved driving a raw, 6-foot-diameter ventilation raise and emergency escapeway, using a work cage that was suspended on a hoisting rope extended down a small-diameter drill hole. Although the method was new and experimental, the raise was completed in record time. Overall costs were less than they would have been with conventional methods. The company's initial experience suggested improvements both in design and operating technique that should prove of value to others who contemplate using the cage method of raising

One by one new metals come to share the burden of modern industry. Long before the Christian era potters and glass workers employed fine and costly blue pigments that contained cobalt. Cobalt blue class has been found in the tombs of the Egyptians and in the ruins of Troy, and many of the colors used by the ancient Greeks and Romans contained cobalt. The ancients, however, were apparently unaware that the colors they used were caused by cobalt, and it was not until late in the 17th century that the existence of the element was recognized, Writers in the Middle Ages referred to "cobalos" as an evil spirit that haunted mines and caused trouble to the miners. Subsequently the German worms "Kobold," meaning goblin, came to be applied to any baffling mineral and particularly to minerals that resembled ores but failed to yield metal when smelted. Even to-day there is something of an air of mystery about cobalt, and a medieval cloak of secrecy still surrounds many of the metallurgical processes employed in its production. "Zaffre" was mentioned about the middle of the sixteenth century by Biringuccio, and in 1735 the metal war, first prepared by G. Brandt. To preparation of cobalt compounds, however, must have been carried on in at least a small way ever since the opening of the silver-cobalt deposits of Schneeberg in 1470. By 1790 there were 25 works engaged in the industry, rust of them located in Saxony, but the total output of these works probably did not exceed 300 tone of cobalt annually, mostly in the fore of smalt. The smalt which contained approximately 6 per cent cobalt was sold in Venice in 1520 at about 16 cents a pound. A few refineries in Holland supplied the Irish linen trade, contributed a farce amount to the Dutch linen industries, and alto provided smaller quantities for the manufactuer of litmus in Holland. Any discussion of growth and future requirements has to begin with people--both their number and their needs. Both have been rising ever since any American can remember. Together, the number of people, which has been increasing rather modestly, and their wants and desires for material things, which have been increasing very sharply, seemed to have comprised a growth imperative in mineral consumption in the United States, especially during the last several decades. While the Nation's birthrate is now well below the replacement rate and still falling, the built-in momentum of the post-World War II population boom will continue to be felt well into the 21st century. Even using the modest projection of a 0.8 percent yearly increase, we are still looking at the possibility of 265 million Americans being around by Year 2000.

Progressive mine management is placing increased emphasis on improved ventilation as a contribution to better safety , health , and productivity of miners . Management is on the alert for means of bettering the working environment by increasing the flow of air and distributing it more effectively to the working places , having in mind the necessity of avoiding exorbitant ventilation costs . A basic need in planning betterments of this kind is knowledge of existing rates of flow and air pressures , infCoorrmmaattiicon that is supplied through ventilation surveys . Some companies make partial surveys from time to time , but few make complete surveys on a routine basis . This report describes the practice of a large British anthracite -mining company , which operates 24 collieries in South Wales , in carrying out a routine program of ventilation surveying . Ventilation characteristics and climatic conditions in the working places of its collieries are determined at frequent intervals with a view to increasing the effectiveness of ventilation and protecting the health of workers . It is thought that many of the points of the procedure used in making the surveys and in compiling and reporting the results will be applicable to American practice and that a discussion of the program may be helpful to colliery managers who are planning similar work .

A windowed-cell phase equilibrium apparatus was used to obtain equilibrium vapor- liquid data for a helium-bearing natural gas (Hogback) at temperatures from -100 to -250° F and pressures to 500 psia. Anomalous phase behavior resulting in the formation of two stable liquid phases occurred at tmperatures below -200° F and pressures above 200 psia. A review of the published literature on the occurrence of multiple-liquid phases included in the report indicates that the experimental results with Hogback gas are the first substantiated evidence of a vapor-liquid-liquid equilibria in a helium-containing natural gas.

Cutter roof failure, a ground control problem that frequently results in massive roof failure, is common in coal mines of the Northern Appala-chian Coal Basin, causing delays in production and posing a safety hazard to mine personnel. The Bureau of Mines is conducting research on the causes of cutter roof failure to gain a basis from which to predict and prevent its occurrence, and to support such roof when failure occurs or is imminent. Research conducted at the Greenwich Collieries North and South Mines, in central Pennsylvania revealed a correlation between the presence of clastic dikes and formation of cutter roof failure. The research con-sisted of in-mine mapping of geologic and deformational features, rock pressure monitoring, core recovery and evaluation, and in situ stress measurement. It was found that roof failure increased in areas where the occurrence of clastic dikes was most frequent, especially where two or more clastic dikes intersect. Staggering of crosscuts prevented the extension of cutters and deterred the occurrence of large falls extending over several break-throughs. In addition, trusses and cribbing were effective in stabilizing clastic dikes and inhibiting the development of cutter roof failure when employed immediately or shortly after mining.

The production of sponge iron is one of the earliest arts in the metal¬lurgy of iron and steel. The idea of producing iron direct from ore at temperatures lower than the melting point of, the iron has persisted throughout the centuries. The purpose of this paper is to present a general picture of the methods, proposed or tried within the past 100 years, for producing sponge iron by treating hot ore with heated reducing gases. The abundant literature has been abstracted, and quoted freely. Publications concerning more detailed information on the various methods are referred to in the footnotes and in the bibliography.

A flat slot is created in rock to cause stress relief effects in a pair of hydraulic borehole pressure cells (previously installed in drill holes above and below the slot ) , which act as sensing devices . This relief is annulled by repressuring the slot by means of a flat hydraulic cell . The slot pressure at annulment is taken to be the existing ground stress at right angles to the plane of the slot . A number of trial installations in the rib of a mine drift showed that for a valid determination of ground stress the sensing devices that respond to relief and repressuring must be within a specified zone close to the pressure transmitter ; otherwise the indicated ground stress may be excessive . By using an additional pair of borehole pressure cells , installed a few feet away , the existing rock stress can be redetermined at intervals , irrespective of a change of stress intensity subsequent to the initial installation . Based on these findings , equipment and procedures have been developed that make possible the installation and operation of a permanent rock stress monitoring station for observing mining - induced stress changes . The station consists of a 12 - in - wide hydraulic pressure cell cemented in a flat slot and four 2- by 8 - in flat hydraulic pressure cells in nearby drill holes . All drilling for the installation can be done with an air leg drill and conventional bits . Once the installation is completed , all required information is obtained by Bourdon pressure gage readings . The apparatus is simple , relatively inexpensive , and reliable under operating conditions in a wet mine . Unlike most methods of rock stress determination , this scheme permits periodic remeasurement of absolute rock pressure over several years , without additional drilling or instrumentation . The Bureau of Mines devised a test nipple for the field study of corrosion in the condensate-return lines of Federal heating plants. Corrosion surveys, made with this device, showed that the deterioration of the piping was caused principally by carbonic acid in the steam condensate. Corrosion problems were brought under control when the carbonic acid concentration in the condensate was decreased. In many instances, this was effected by decreasing the total carbon dioxide content of the feedwater; in others, the condensate acidity was neutralized with volatile, alkaline chemicals. Filming treatment with octadecylamine, reported successful in controlling return-line corrosion in industry, was much less effective in Federal area-heating plants. Laboratory study by the Bureau disclosed that octadecylamine is unstable in heating systems. Analytical methods were developed for this chemical and its degradation products in heating-plant condensate. Field surveys, in using these methods, confirmed the instability of the filming material. Laboratory tests showed that the degradation products are not useful film formers. Since filming treatment has little effect on condensate corrosivity, the piping was corroded where it was not coated by the treatment chemical.

The primary objective of this Bureau of Mines research was to measure the size distribution of respirable quartz collected at metal mines, nonmetal mines, and processing plants to select the best reference standard for use in quantifying quartz in mine and plant dust samples. The secondary objective was to size all the nonquartz particles collected at the same sites. Particle size measurements were made on 29 samples using a scanning electron microscope in the backscatter mode of operation, interfaced with an image analysis system. The Mine Safety and Health Administration, Denver, CO, provided the 29 samples, which were collected at mines and processing plants in 19 states. The accumulated particle size measurements indicate that NBS 1878, minus 5-f.lm Hin-U-Sil, and minus 5-f.lm Supersil would be preferred over Silver Bond B as reference standards for most quantitative determinations by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectrometry. The respirable dust samples collected at sand plants, however, would be better served by a new reference standard having a quartz particle size distribution of approximately 2.2 um, as none of the four existing reference standards matched closely with them. Commercially available NBS 1878 and minus 5-um Hin-U-Sil CQuid be used as reference standards for 28 of the 29 samples studied in this investigation.

When acoustical materials are used in a mining environment for noise control purposes, they are subject to environmental deterioration from hydraulic fluid, moisture, and dust. These and other factors can cause physical degradation of the material, which can lessen its ability to absorb sound. In this study, the Bureau of Mines measured the sound absorption properties of 16 different acoustical materials after 4 sample treatments: (1) being kept clean and dry (as received from the supplier), as a control or reference standard, (2) immersion in water and draining, (3) immersion in lOO-pct-petroleum-type hydraulic fluid and draining, and (4) exposure in a coal mine. The last three treatments were used to approximate the type of physical degradation that can be experienced in actual use. The impedance tube or standing wave method was used to measure the normal absorption coefficient. It was found that the absorption coefficient of most materials was adversely affected by the retention of either oil or water, with oil having the greater effect. The only class of materials that was affected by neither oil nor water was neoprene foam.

The present trend of chemicometallurgical research toward widespread and inclusive use of thermodynamic methods requires the inclusion of available data of this sort in any comprehensive metallurgical report . Such data for manganese are far from adequate for the full utilization of these methods . Even if our knowledge of these properties is weak , the collection of available figures is nevertheless well worth while , especially if their utilization in an approximate way may show inherent possibilities of application . No less important is the necessity for discovering the vital gaps in the existing information , to serve as a basis for further pertinent study . The utility of the thermodynamic methods of Lewis and Randall ( 234 ) 3 has become increasingly evident to metallurgists . It is true that at present no better approach to the general , fundamental problems of chemical metallurgy is available than close adherence to these methods . The effort is here made to collect and correlate , as far as possible , significant quantitative thermodynamic data on manganese and its metallurgically important compounds . There are considered here only the intrinsic properties of pure materials . The order maintained as far as possible will be as follows :

In research conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, platinum-group metal (PGM) flotation concentrate from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to biooxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in an effort to break down the sulfide minerals and liberate the associated PGM's for subsequent chemical leaching. Bacterial preleaching oxidized up to 94 pct of the sulfide present, destroyed the PGM-bearing pentlandite [(Ni,Fe)9S8] mineralization, and dissolved most of the nickel in the concentrate. Cyanidation at 80° C proved to be the most attractive chemical leachant, removing 34 pct of the platinum, 76 pct of the palladium, 94 pct of the rhodium, and 97 pct of the gold from the biooxidized concentrate. Research also indicated that increased sulfide oxidation during the preleach phase led to improved PGM recovery in the subsequent chemical leaching phase.

The natural vertical fracture system in bituminous coalbeds is called cleat. Cleat orientation commonly controls the direction of mining with major development paralleling the face cleat. Previous researchers have categorized the origin of cleat as endogenetic, relating the origin of cleat to compaction and coalification, and exogenetic, relating the origin of cleat to tectonic forces. In the coalbeds studied for this report it was found that tectonic forces were the controlling factor of cleat formation. Face cleats were formed as extension fractures during structural deformation, and butt cleats, as release fractures during erosion and uplift. The face cleat of the Pittsburgh coalbed rotates from N 80° W in north-western West Virginia to N 57° W in southwestern Pennsylvania; the face cleat maintains a perpendicular orientation to the shifting axial trend of local structures. Cleat orientation in other bituminous coalbeds in Virginia, Utah, Oklahoma, and Central Pennsylvania showed a similar relationship to local structure. Directional permeability of coal is directly related to cleat. Holes drilled perpendicular to the face cleat yield from 2.5 to 10 times the amount of gas released as compared with holes drilled perpendicular to the butt cleat.

The Bureau of Mines studied copper-nickel minerals (mainly sulfides) of the Duluth Gabbro Complex in north-eastern Minnesota to determine their response to selective high-temperature sulfatization techniques. The gabbro, containing 0.44 percent copper and 0.13 percent nickel, was ground to minus 325 mesh and sulfatized in a heated, rotating, stainless steel bench-scale retort. Tests demonstrated that over 95 percent of the copper and 80 percent of the nickel can be converted to water-soluble sulfates, depending upon the roasting conditions employed. Yield equations were developed using regression analysis for predicting the extraction of copper and nickel between the temperature limits of 520° to 670° C, the roasting time limits of 3 to 7 hours, and S02 limits of 10 to 40 percent in S02-air mixtures.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by The Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations No. 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigation beginning with No. 4251, of which this is the fourth. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes show on Figure 13 in Volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township-is given with the discussion covering that area.

This report details the investigation of multiple-seam longwall subsidence conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines from 1978 to 1989. A field investigation monitored ground surface movements over four upper-seam longwall panels and six lower-seam panels. The characteristics of the subsidence occurring as a result of mining these panels are examined; in particular, the angle of draw, subsidence development, total magnitude and areal extent, and critical width are evaluated and discussed. Comparisons are also made between the characteristics of multiple-seam longwall subsidence and single-seam longwall subsidence that occurred at the same site.
