"The Bureau of Mines has been investigating deposits of critical and essential minerals in the United States since 1939. Projects were set up on only the most promising properties.A preliminary examination of the Mount Hope mine was made in January 1943 by the Bureau's engineers, who recommended exploration by diamond drilling.The mine is in the unsurveyed portion of T. 22 N., R. 1 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, south-central Eureka County, Nevada, 25 miles by road north of the village of Eureka. A partly graded and Graveled secondary road connects the mine and Eureka on U. S. Highway 50.Extensive sampling was done by the Bureau in February. 1943. Core drilling from the surface was started on March 15, 1944, and completed on April 2, 1545. The 16 holes drilled totaled 7,215 feet. The mining company also did extensive underground core drilling from April 21, 1944, to January 4, 1945. This report gives the results of core drilling supervised by the Bureau of Mines.The drilling program was designed to explore for extensions of the mineralization exposed in the mine workings. As a result of drilling, additional ore was found, and it is believed that this project has fulfilled the purpose for which it was planned.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization, of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to na¬tional security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation test. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. Dean, assists director.With respect to this report special acknowledgment is due to Charles W. Merriam of the United States Geological Survey for his interpretation of the Mount Hope mine Geology and his cooperation throughout the project; Col. Leverett Davis, former lessee of the property; K. K. Hood, manager of the Mount Hope Unit, Callahan Zinc-Lead Co., Inc.; C. P. Knaebel, assistant manager, and M. P. From thermodynamic calculations Maier predicted that zinc oxide and methane would react at specified temperatures substantially according to equation (1). (1.) ZnO + CH4 = Zn (gas) + CO + 2H2. Other reactions that may take place are (2.) CH4 = C + 2H2. (3.) ZnO + CO = Zn (gas) + CO2. (4.) ZnO + H2 = Zn (gas) + H2O. Maier predicted that 870°C would be the critical temperature above which reaction (1) would take precedence over reaction (2) and that reaction (1), at equilibrium, would be substantially complete at or above 927°C. Theoretical considerations indicate that reaction (1) is reversible: this is supported, but not proved, by experimental data. The other reactions are known to be reversible. At low temperatures reaction (2) requires a catalyst and it is slow below 1000°C. Reactions (3) and (4) are rapid, but the equilibrium constants are such that only small concentrations of CO2 or H2O can be produced below 1000°C. Maier calculated that CO2 should not exceed 0.5 per cent at 870°C., and the calculation for water vapor gives a still smaller order of magnitude.

To aid in designing a continuous system for evaluating processes for converting coal to high-Btu gas] the Bureau of Mines determined the amenability of various coals and a char to hydrogasification at 800° C and 6,000 psig using a molybdenum catalyst. A lignite from Rockdale, Tex., an hvCb coal from Rock Springs, Wyo., a char from the low-temperature carbonization of the latter, an hvAb coal from Pittsburgh, Pa., and an anthracite from Luzerne County, Pa., were selected. Highest yields of gaseous hydrocarbons, 94 pet, based on maf feed, were produced from char, and lowest yields, 67 pct, were obtained from lignite. Hydrocarbon gases contained 82 to 92 pct methane, 8 to 15 pct ethane; and 1 to 3 pct propane.

"Introduction.The Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment station has been studying the production of sponge iron for the past four years, and during 1923 progress advanced to the point industrial applications can be safely considered. A furnace was operated commercially at silver City, Utah, producing about three tons of sponge iron daily.The Bureau was led to undertake this work by the interest in the use of sponge iron for copper precipitation and for conversion to iron and steel in the electric furnace.If a piece of iron oxide is completely reduced at such a low temperature (850 to 900° C) that no sintering or fusion takes place, then the piece of metallic iron formed has the same size and shape as the original piece of oxide on account of the removal of oxygen, the structure is finely porous, exposing a large surface of iron, and the apparent density is less than that of the original piece of iron oxide. This material is called ""sponge iron"". Chemically, it is a very reactive material."

The Hermada antimony deposit is in the Sewtooth Range in southwestern Idaho, about 77 miles by road northeast of Boise. Stibnite mineralization occurs over an area one mile wide from west to east and two miles long. It is locally referred to as the Swanholm district. In 1947 high- grade stibnite ore was discovered on the East Fork of Swanholm Creek. Since then, ore in commercial quantity has been produced by the Hermada Mining Co. The total output for 1947-50 was about 5,000 tons of ore, containing 640 short tons of antimony metal.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the extent of phosphate resources available for recovery by the experimental borehole mining method in the Southeastern Coastal Plain of the United States- Phosphate re- sources at overburden depths greater than 30 m are as a rule currently unsuitable for recovery through conventional mining methods because of economic, environmental, or technical considerations. In the identified deposit areas, borehole mining operations are projected to yield a more favorable rate of return and to be environmentally more desirable than conventional surface mining. Borehole mining resource estimates presented in this study are preliminary and designed to serve as a basis for future resource evaluations, as the current data base is relatively sparse and incomplete. The resulting resources have, therefore, been classified as hypothetical and speculative and are subject to up- dating as additional exploratory data become available. Hypothetical and speculative resources amenable to borehole mining are estimated to total about 385 billion metric tons (rat) of phosphate matrix with a minimum in situ grade of 5 pct P205. With projected borehole mining capabilities and current conventional beneficiation procedures, this resource would make available approximately 64 billion mt of phosphate rock product at an estimated grade of 30 pct P205.

[Approximately 7-1/2 million tons of subbituminous coals are mined annually in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana, of which 50 percent probably reaches domestic consumers. The moisture of these subbituminous coals is high, averaging about 25 percent when they are mined. The coals are non-caking end stack to a variable degree when exposed to normal atmospheric conditions. They are good domestic fuels, are considered to be smokeless in most furnaces, and have been used for many years in hand-fired domestic furnaces in which the practice is to employ large lutes for efficient combustion.]

This report describes the development and performance of a multi-level, multi-function Calibration Light Source designed for field-calibration of a group of specific photometers. The Calibration Source is capable of providing ±35% accuracy calibrations at all of the following levels: 0. 05 foot-Lamberts, 6 foot-Lamberts, 6 foot-candles and 20 foot-candles. The Source was found to provide constant light output to within 1% over 50 hours of lamp operation and for line voltage variations of ±25%. It is compact and light-weight (11 pounds), and can be easily transported and used by one man in normal office environments (without requiring a darkroom).

Sulfur is a plentiful, low cost, unique material whose physical properties can be altered and employed in structural applications. This program was undertaken to develop an optimum sulfur based formulation for use as a coating to both seal and support mine walls. The initial effort in the program was devoted to a laboratory study of the physical and mechanical properties of a variety of sulfur base coatings that were specifically formulated for this application. Concurrent with formulation development, laboratory equipment and techniques were developed for spray applying the sulfur based coatings to the ceiling and walls of a structure that simulated the interior of a mine. Much of the formulation work was guided by the experiences encountered when attempting to spray the formulations overhead. One hundred parts of sulfur modified with 10 parts of talc, 3 parts of milled glass fiber, and 2 parts of dicyclopentadiene was found to be a fire retarded, low odor, low eye irritation, sprayable formulation for sealing and strengthening mini, walls. An invention disclosure on this formulation was submitted to the Bureau of Mines and a patent application was filed. Various mineral samples were obtained and adhesive strengths of the formulation to these samples in both the wet and dry state were measured. With the development of an attractive sulfur based coating material, attention was directed to the design, fabrication, and testing of a portable spray application unit so that coatings might be applied in the field to various rock surfaces and earth formations for further evaluation. The unit was fabricated in the Southwest Research Institute shop. Once operational, the unit&apos;s capabilities were field tested and demonstrated at three separate locations. Upon completion of the field testing, the unit was shipped to the Spokane Mining Research Center where Bureau personnel were instructed in the use of the unit.

Chlorination of sulfide minerals and several prepared metal sulfides was studied. The resulting data were analyzed with respect to kinetics of the reactions and application to nonpolluting methods of winning metals from sulfide ores. Sulfides of iron, copper-iron, nickel, lead, zinc, silver, bismuth, arsenic, rhenium, molybdenum, and tungsten were investigated at temperatures up to 600° C. Copper-iron, lead, and zinc sulfides showed at least some product-controlled (parabolic) kinetics at the lower temperatures within the temperature ranges studied, but only nickel and silver sulfides had chlorination rates controlled by parabolic reaction kinetics in the commercially important temperature range of 450° to 600° C.

The investigation reported herein is concerned with the generation and propagation of the strain wave produced in rock by the detonation of a high-velocity explosive. This report is the second of a series that will deal with this and related problems. The rock type in which these experiments were carried out was greenstone. Subsequent reports will discuss similar investigations in other rock types. Specifically, the problem under study is concerned with how certain characteristics of the strain wave, such as the maximum compressive and tensile strain, the maximum time rate of change of strain, the frequency components present in the pulse, the duration of the pulse, and other measurable characteristics, vary with the size of the charge and the distance from the detonation point to the point of measurement. . Other investigators have studied certain aspects of the generation and propagation problem in rock. However, in these studies the travel distances from the detonation to measurement point were comparatively long and the frequency components in the explosive wave were usually under 100 c.p.s. In this study the detonation to measurement distance covered. the range from 2 to 54 feet, and the strain gages and recording equipment employed in the instrumentation of the problem had a frequency response range from 200 to 10,000 c.p.s.

Drill cores from 15 holes in the West Central Mesabi Range were studied as part of the Lake Superior iron resource investigation begun in 1957 by the Bureau of Mines. Chemical, petrographic, and metallurgical analyses were made to determine grade, mineralogy, magnetic characteristics, and response to beneficiation. Data in this report were developed to provide a better under-standing of the nature and character of low-grade iron ore occurrences, to measure potential of usable ore, and to provide a basis for comparison with bank samples previously taken in the same general area. The average iron content of 4,445 feet of core was 31.8 percent. Iron oxides present were hematite, goethite, and magnetite; the gangue minerals were chiefly quartz, iron silicate, and iron-bearing carbonates.

The flotation work on samples from nine fluorspar properties in Crittenden and Livingston Counties, Ky., reported herewith was part of a wartime project that resulted in increasing the supply of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. The samples were tailings, dumps, and waste rock that had been rejected in previous milling operations. All were treated successfully by flotation to yield metallurgical-grade concentrates with recoveries ranging from 77.5 to 98.3 percent of the fluorite. After the laboratory testing, the results of which were available to the owners and operators of the properties, many of the tailing ponds and rock dumps were milled. The real value of this report, therefore, is to show the operators of gravity concentration plants the possibilities of re-treating waste products by flotation either at some future time or currently with the gravity

This report presents a Bureau of Mines assessment of crude oil and associated gas production and reserves that would result from different drilling efforts in the lower or contiguous 48 States during the 1972-85 period. The drilling effort was based upon five growth rate assumptions from the 1971 level. Additions to crude oil reserves were computed for nine cases resulting from the use of three equations for findings per foot drilled and three constant revision factors. The results indicate that the United States will not become self-sufficient in crude oil production by 1985 and also illustrate the lead time required to reverse the decline in oil production. Discussion is limited to three of the nine cases to provide high, intermediate, and low results. More emphasis is on the intermediate case because it is indicative of the most probable trends. The methodology and statistical data are included in the appendices.
