In 1992, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral resource investigation of the 78,000-acre Garns Mountain study area in southeastern Idaho. The area had been proposed for Wilderness. It is underlain by Paleozoic to Mesozoic-age sedimentary rocks about 11,000 feet thick. Rocks have been faulted, offset, and folded as part of the northerly-trending Idaho-Wyoming Overthrust Belt. Study area mineral occurrences are: phosphate in the Permian Phosphoria Formation; coal in the Cretaceous Frontier end Bear River Formations; and uranium in carbonaceous and phosphate-bearing shales and coal of these formations. Four zones of phosphate are estimated to contain about 528 mitt ion tons of rock with over 10% P205; samples of phosphate-rich rock also contained as much as 3950 ppm chromium, 3280 ppm vanadium, 23 ppm gallium, and 5540 ppm zinc. Fragments of poor-quality coal and carbonaceous shale were found in the area; coal was mined near the northeast border. Uranium content up to 0.016% U3O8 is in carbon-rich shales. Oil and gas were drilled for, with minimal success, in folded sedimentary rocks (frontier and Nugget Sandstone) in the Horseshoe anticline, near the east border. Examined workings included 12 dozer cuts, 4 trenches, 2 prospect pits, and 2 caved adits. No production is known, and no leases or claims are held for the area.

This report presents a Bureau of Mines literature survey that provides a data base useful for current and future studies in the area of chemically enhanced drilling and cutting. Publications describing laboratory testing and field studies of drilling and cutting with chemical additives are reviewed. Significant results are summarized and tabulated by rock or material type and also by chemical additive, with extensive references. Selected studies related to fluid-enhanced processing or material testing are summarized in the appendixes.

"INTRODUCTION For many years protective grounding of electrical equipment has been advocated as a means of safeguarding equipment against damage and of minimizing shock hazards to persons. Several codes are in effect covering in considerable detail the items to be observed in obtaining effective grounding in and about industrial plants. Although the coal-mining industry does not have a comprehensive code of its own covering the grounding of electrical installations, a number of States and individual coal-mining companies have issued codes, standards, or rules that include certain requirements with reference to grounding. As early as 1916, 4/ and again more recently, 5/ the Bureau of Mines recommended grounding, particularly as a means of preventing shock to men working on or around electrical equipment.It is common knowledge among electrical engineers of public utility and mining companies that connecting a wire from the frame of a machine to a rod or pipe driven into the earth does not necessarily assure desired protection of surface equipment. In fact, it has often been found necessary to use several interconnected rods and to treat the surrounding earth with salt or other chemicals before the connection to earth would have sufficiently low resistance to give satisfactory results. Even these expedients have not produced the desired results in some localities. It has also been found that ground connections initially having a low resistance may attain high resistance during some seasons of the year. In spite of such difficulties with surface equipment, it has sometimes been assumed that a mining machine resting on the floor in a coal mine is grounded by virtue of its contact with that floor. It has also been assumed by persons endeavoring to comply with grounding requirements that a peg or rod driven into the mine floor would provide a sufficiently low-resistance contact with the earth to be satisfactory as an electrode for connecting the grounding wire from frames of equipment. That both assumptions may be wholly untrustworthy has been proved by the authors in actual tests with underground machinery."

Extraction of alumina was correlated with the sinter and leach products from the lime soda sinter process for anorthosite. The effect of composition and grain size of reactants, time and temperature of sintering, and techniques of sample preparation were investigated. Greater than 90 percent Al2O3 extractions were obtained from dry-mixed minus 200-mesh anorthosite sinter mixes having mole ratios of CaO/SiO2 = 1.8 and Na2O/Al2O3 = 0.8. These sinter mixes were briquetted at 15,000 psi and fired between 1,200° C and 1,320° C for 20 to 60 minutes. The sinter phases that contribute to low alumina recovery were determined by X-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, and electron probe X-ray spectrography. The mechanism of the sintering reaction was investigated by high-temperature X-ray diffractometry. The contrast in the lime soda sinter process for clays and for anorthosites are discussed. Explanations and suggested solutions are presented for problems such as gelation and variable alumina recovery encountered by previous investigations.

The W. E. Dunkle mine, sometimes called the Costello Creek coal mine, is 8 miles N. 20° W. of Colorado Station on the Alaska Railroad. The presence of coal in this area has been known since the district was extensively prospected for gold between 1911 and 1915. At that time, coal from this deposit was used by miners for blacksmithing. The increased demand for coal resulting from government defense projects in Alaska led to exploitation of this deposit in 1941. The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska was responsible for establishment by the Army of the Coal Procurement Section of its Alaska Department. It proposed to investigate the deposits and to expedite production from the Alaskan coal fields. The Bureau of Mines closely cooperated in this program. The quality of the Dunkle coal and the favorable location of the deposit caused it to be one of the properties chosen for investigation under a joint Army-Bureau of Mines-Geological Survey program.

The Eufaula bauxite district of Barbour and Henry Counties in southeast Alabama covers an area approximately 14 miles long, 6 miles wide at the eastern extremity near the Chattahoochee River, and 10 miles wide at the western end near the east fork of the Choctawhatchee River (see figs. 1 and 2). The long axis of this polygon bears a little south of east.

The Eve Mills deposit is in Monroe County, Tenn., near the southeastern corner of the State. The deposit was examined in February 1943 by a Bureau of Mines engineer, and drilling the property was recommended to increase the on: reserves enough to justify mining should war needs require it. The deposits were explored, by 32 diamond-drill holes totaling 11,649 feet during the periods from July 1943 to November 7, 1945, and from April 1944 to August 17, 1944. The drilling campaign disclosed a large area of mineralization. The ore, however, is apparently confined to long, narrow sheets. The indicated grade of the ore bodies blocked cut by the Bureau of Mines is 4.o8 percent zinc and 2.10 percent iron.

This report supplements the date contained in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6156, "Special features of core drilling in the salt beds of Western Texas and New Mexico," by J. S. Wroth. That circular dealt with the drilling of the first 12 of the 24 potash tests made by the U. S. Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey; this report is concerned with the drilling of the last 12 tests. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer is indebted to R. E. Heithecker, the Bureau of Mines engineer who had charge of the drilling of tests 13 to 17, for his well-prepared records on the drilling of these tests.

[The explosability of coal dusts has been the subject of many investigations studies have been conducted in laboratories, in galleries and in coal faire; of several countries to obtain information on the causes, development, and prevention of mine explosions. Early laboratory experiments on it American colas dealt with pressures developed in test bomb by explosions of dust clouds and with, the effects of gas in the dust atmosphere.5/ Later, the emphasis shafted to evaluation of the relative fleet flammability and the ignition temperatures of coal dusts.6/ Much worthwhile effort was devoted to the development of Laboratory apparatus and test procedures that gave good correlation with large-scale explosion tests in the Experimental cost mine. The study area, which comprises 28,443 acres within the Jacumba Wilderness Study Area, is in the California Desert Conservation Area, and along the U.S.-Mexico border 25 miles west of Fl Centro, CA. The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluation of mineral resources is based on examination of mining claims, known mineral occurrences, and mineralized zones during the fall of 1983. Limestone resources were identified inside the study area; tungsten resources may he present. Metasedimentary rocks intruded by Cretaceous Quartz diorite predominate in the study area. Tungsten and some gold have been found in skarn zones along intrusive contacts; limestone deposits are in the pre-Cretaceous rocks. Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic flows, pyroclastic rocks, clay beds, and diatomite in lake deposits nave been investigated for possible non-metallic resources. Evidence of mining or prospecting was found at 26 sites in or just outside the study area. In 1983, 106 claims were held in 13 claim groups. One claimant was sporadically prospecting for gold on claims in the north part of the study area in 1983, and gravel was being mined from alluvium 1/4 mile to the east.

To significantly increase the stability of underground excavations while exploiting the full advantages of confined rock strength, methods must be developed to actively control the distribution of stresses near the excavation. This U.S. Bureau of Mines study examines theoretical and practical aspects of rock pres¬surization, an active stress control concept that induces compressive stress in the wall rock through repeated hydraulic fracturing with a settable fluid. Numerical analyses performed by incorporating the rock pressurization concept into a variety of boundary-element models indicate that rock pressurization has the potential to improve underground excavation stability in three ways: (1) by relocating stress concentrations away from the weak opening surface to stronger, confined wall rock; (2) by inducing additional stresses in a biaxial stress field to reduce the difference between the principal stress components near the surface of the opening; and (3) by counteracting the tensile stresses induced in the rock around internally loaded openings. Practical aspects of the rock pressurization concept were investigated through a series of hydraulic fracturing experiments. The use of sulfur as a settable fluid for hydraulic fracturing was demonstrated, although problems related to sulfur viscosity suggest that other molten materials, such as wax, may be better suited to practical field application of the rock pressurization concept.

During the period from June to September 1943, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of the Vial mine, near the village of Linden I in Iowa County, Wis., as part of a general investigation of the zinc-producing area of southwestern Wisconsin. The work was done when every effort was being made to increase the production of metals important to the Nation's war program. The Bureau completed 29 churn-drill holes aggregating 3,348 feet of bore in areas immediately north and west of the old Vial mine, which had been worked intermittently between 1908 and 1939. The drilling supplemented a previous drilling program by the lessees and disclosed the presence of two significant zones of mineralization.

"INTRODUCTION AND OBJECT OF EXPERIMENTAn explosion in and rupture of a gas-tight switch box on an electric loader in a mine located near Pittsburgh indicated that the cause was an internally generated inflammable gas-air mixture. This led to the suspicion that moisture condensation or ""other unusual conditions might have caused a spark or are across the surface of the material and that the heat may have created a carbonized path across the synthetic plastic base which would then conduct a large current with the generation of considerable heat and thermal decomposition of the base materials base in the box which exploded gave every indication that this series of events had taken place, and accordingly it was desired to determine what explosive gases such a decomposition of these insulating materials would produce.ACKNOWNLEDGMENTSThe desirability of making this investigation was suggested to the authors by L. The Bureau of Mines used a windowed cell to measure the phase-boundary pressures of two related series of gas-condensate fluid mixtures. Normal butane was added to the mixtures incrementally to determine its effectiveness for lowering phase-boundary pressure. All the experimental data were correlated, so that the pressure required to maintain light oils mixed with natural gas in the single phase may be computed for secondary recovery applications. The heavy hydrocarbon parts of the mixtures were distillation fractions of a Gulf Coast condensate. Intermediate normal hydrocarbons in the butane-heptane range and natural gas were added to the fractions in selected proportions, so that phase-diagram pressures of 26 fluids were actually studied. The experimental range of temperatures was 50° to 280° F. Two correlations were developed to represent phase-boundary pressures by means of a polynomial. Independent variables represent natural gas content, disparity of properties of components comprising the mixtures, and temperature. A fourth variable, for one correlation only, was the quantity of normal butane added to the original mixtures. The latter correlation with four independent variables contains 15 coefficients and is estimated to be accurate to 135 psi.

A major purpose of this contract was to evaluate a variety of dust suppressants to determine their effectiveness in mitigating dust from taconite tailings. During the course of the investigation tailings from pilot-plant tests of Minnesota copper-nickel ores became available and chemical binders were also tested for dust mitigation effectiveness on this mineralogically different material. Field-test plots were established on taconite tailings and wind tunnel laboratory tests conducted. The laboratory tests consisted of comparing treated and untreated samples at wind velocities of 40 mph using a weight-loss method and direct dust emission measurements. It was shown that the emission of fine dust from taconite tailings, in the range of 4.5 microns to 0.85 microns, could be reduced by 99 percent using certain chemical suppressants. It was also demonstrated that a straight water spray on coarse tailings (3/4" to + 10 mesh) reduced dust emission by 95 percent. Although eight different chemicals were tested, most of the tests were made using Coherex, ammonium lignin sulfonate and sodium silicate. These same dust suppressants were used, singly and in combination on almost 75 field-test plots. The Coherex appears to provide the best results in terms of economics and durability. Wind tunnel tests on treated and untreated Cu-Ni tailings demonstrated that applications of dust suppressants reduced fugitive fine dust by better than 99 percent.

Gnome shaft, situated about 24 miles southeast of Carlsbad, N. Mex., was designed and sunk by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission for conducting a peace- time experimental nuclear explosion in the thick salt beds of the Permian Salado formation. Excavation was started July 1, 1960, and completed July 26, 1961. The 10-foot diameter shaft, lined with concrete through the rock section, was sunk 1,216 feet. A drift was driven approximately 1,140 feet on the 1,200- foot level terminating in a shot chamber. On completion of 100 feet of shaft, by means of a truck-mounted crane, facilities were installed for conventional sinking. About 709 feet of rock and 506 feet of salt were encountered in the shaft. Salt beds at this place are reported to be over 1,200 feet thick. The overlying rock section varies greatly in composition and thickness of beds and contains a 28-foot bed of water-bearing dolomite. The aquifer was sealed to facilitate shaft sinking and to prevent water-seepage damage in the salt section of the shaft. Sealing was accomplished by grout injection through holes drilled into the aquifer and by grouting behind the concrete liner.

Six different chemical explosives were detonated in a test series to com-pare their relative performance in granite. From 5 to 255 feet from the detonation point, strain, acceleration, and particle velocity were recorded and analyzed for amplitude and pulse shape. Strain energy was calculated from strain data, and displacement data were obtained from particle velocity data by integration. The results show that explosives which have a characteristic impedance more closely matching that of the rock generate larger peak amplitudes than explosives with a lower characteristic impedance. The results also show that as the ratio of characteristic impedance of exp1osive-to-rock approaches unity, more rock is crushed and a larger percentage of the avail-able explosive energy is transferred to the rock as seismic energy. The effect of characteristic impedance is shown to be greater than the effect predicted from acoustic theory and is believed to be indicative of shock wave effects at the explosive-rock boundary.

Publications issued after June 30, 1965 are noted where pertinent in footnotes but are not abstracted.
