This circular is part II of a series of papers reviewing the literature on air conditioning in mines with particular reference to the health, safety, and efficiency of employees. It deals with the physiological aspects of the principal physical qualities of mine air; part I (Information Circular 7001), chapters 1 to 3, discussed the physiological aspects of the chemical qualities of mine air, especially when contaminated with organic matter and noxious and toxic gases; part III will describe theoretical and practical methods of air-conditioning mines to try to correct or alleviate the conditions mentioned and will discuss the results attained by some of the systems now in use in various parts of tae world. With the present emphasis on the necessity for preserving the health of the Nation's defenders, industrial as well as military, attention should be called to the various conditions that may affect adversely their health and efficiency. One of the most important of these is exposure to abnormal air conditions, especially high temperatures and humidities. Therefore, it is believed that although the data presented here on the physiological effects of exposure to high temperatures cue intended mainly for the mining and allied industries, they are applicable to many other defense industries as well as to conditions present in some activities of the Army and Navy.

"INTRODUCTION The Treasure Hill mines, situated in Dry Canyon, Ophir mining district, Tooele County, Utah, together with several other properties in the district, examined were examined by Frank L. Wideman, an engineer, the Bureau of Mines, in September 1942.In April 1945, development drilling was started on the Treasure Hill mines, which are operated under lease from the Madison Mines Co. This publication is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods and costs of producing uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. The information it contains was gathered in 1955-58 and applies to eight small operations. (See fig. 1.) Mining costs have increased since the data were I collected, but the information should be helpful in estimating future costs I at similar deposits. The Bureau of Mines had early experience in the production of carnotite-type ores on the Colorado Plateau.3 4/ Under a cooperative agreement with the National Radium Institute in 1914-16, the Bureau mined and concentrated carnotite ore for recovery of radium, uranium, and vanadium. The ore was taken from claims in or near Long Park Montrose County, Colo., about 3 mi. south of La Salle Mining Co.'s La Salle mine, which is one of the mines described in this report. The Bureau leased the claims from Crucible Steel Mining & Milling Co., a subsidiary of Crucible Steel Co. of America, and from 1914 to 1916 produced 990 tons of high-grade ore, containing 2.6 pct. U308, and about 2,000 tons of mill-grade ore, containing 0.85 pct. U308. The high-grade ore was shipped directly to a radium-recovery plant built in Denver in 1914 under the cooperative agreement. There, commercial methods of extracting uranium, vanadium, and radium from carnotite ores were developed by Bureau personnel. The lower grade ore was concentrated at a small mill in Long Park before being shipped to Denver. The final recovery was 69,000 lb. of U308 and 8.8 g. of radium. The direct mining cost of producing the high-grade ore, including the labor to hand sort and sack it, was $35.96 per ton. Freighting the ore 58 miles to Placerville, Colo., the nearest rail point on the Rio Grande Southern Railway, cost $25.28 per ton, which included $4.55 per ton for ore bags and twine. A study to explore the potential of utilizing the transport time required to move coal miners to and from the working sections. Consideration was given to all forms of training and presentation media, taking into account such environmental factors as noise, dynamic interferences, visibility, physical constraints, and contaminants. Indications of managements? and workers' attitudes toward man-trip training were also assessed. The final product was a proposed prototype training system for man-trip training. "INTRODUCTION The idea of direct steel is by no means new. Although the work of Bessemer and Siemens provided simple and effective moans for converting pig iron into steel and established the ""blast-furnace route"" as the almost universal method of producing steel, metallurgists have not ceased to dream of direct steel. By direct steel is meant any process by which iron oxide in ore is reduced to Iron of the same or greater purity than the final steel or wrought iron. That is, carbon or alloying elements would be added as needed, not reduced in unwanted quantities into the iron and then removed more or completely by refining (Bessemer or open hearth) only to be readded in desired quantities.In general, direct-steel processes are ""sponge-iron"" processes, because reducing iron oxide without simultaneously alloying the iron with carbon, phcophorus, sulfur, and silicon present in ore and fuel succeeds only if the temperature is below the melting point of the iron. Such solid iron formed by reduction of iron oxide at relatively low temperature is sponge iron, which is butlery and porous. When the reduction proceeds at the higher temperature at which the particles of metal can weld together or finally even melt to yield pellets or balls that do not have the porosity and low-density characteristic of sponge iron, the product might preferably be called simply ""direct iron."""

This report present the results of a laboratory and field research program aimed at design and development of a torque-thrust controlled bolter with the capability to (1) predict the "quality of anchorage" attained while installing mechanical anchor roofbolts, and (2) improve the uniformity and tension levels achieved among a group of roofbolts. The prediction accuracy of the anchorage quality algorithm ranged from low to moderate because of the complexity and variability of the phenomena involved. The best roof support with mechanical anchor bolts was found to be achieved by simply installing them under ? proper torque-thrust control, and with ? a hardened washer under the bolthead. This procedure resulted in an improvement in uniformity of 3 times, along with an increase in mean tension levels of 75% over conventionally installed roofbolts.

As a follow-on to previous investigations, reduced treatment levels for the optimum fire retardant/preservative system were evaluated. An impregnation of 3.5 lbs/ft3 of Fyreprufe followed by 3.5 mils of Albi 107A plus an Albi 144 top coat provides adequate flammability and flame spread protection. However, there is a significant loss in compressive strength at this retention level, particularly parallel to the grain. A pilot-size pressure impregnation cell was installed for use in treating larger quantities of wood. Based on the optimum fire retardant/preservative treatment system - Fyreprufe/ACC impregnation followed by Albi 107A/144 intumescent paint - a model treatment pro¬cess was developed, capable of handling 3 million board feet per year. Associated annualized costs per thousand board feet (K bd. ft.) for treating 12" x 12" timber were calculated to be: Impregnation: $-63.00/K bd. ft. Coating: $112.00/K bd. ft. A literature search was conducted to identify materials and techniques suitable for a localized stench warning system for heated mine timbers. Based on this review, a number of stench warning concepts were developed. Those based on surface coating were given a preliminary laboratory evaluation.

Although the pathophysiology of vibration-induced white finger (VWF) is still under discussion, evidence has been accumulated to understand the underlying mechanism. VWF is pathophysiologically characterized by an enhanced vasospastic response to cold, which can result from an imbalance between vasoconstriction and vasodilation in the digital arteries in response to cold (i.e., vasoconstriction-dominant). The imbalance is supposed to be due to faults in vascular vessels and sympathetically mediated vascular tone. Enhanced vasospastic response to cold Narrowing of arterial lumen with medial smooth muscle hypertrophy. Possible functional factors for enhanced vasoconstriction • Increased sympathetic nervous activity to cold (e.g., norepinephrine) • Increased release of endothelin-1 (ET-1; an endothelial-dependent vasoconstrictor) from the endothelium • Increased reactivity of alpha2-adrenoreceptors to cold Possible functional factors for decreased vasodilation • Decreased release of nitric oxide (NO; an endothelial-dependent vasodilator) from the endothelium • Decreased release of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP; a vasodilatory neuropeptide) from sensory afferents The question is how their interrelations or imbalances among them are Vibration and arterial damage The next question is, how does hand-arm vibration exposure induce such pathophysiological changes in VWF patients? Recent morphological evidence from animal experiments shows that vibration acceleration stress (including shear stress) and smooth muscle contraction contribute to arterial damage of smooth muscle and endothelial cells. The vibration-induced arterial damage is frequency-amplitude-dependent.

Bus drivers represent a large segment of the US transportation industry and research has shown an association between exposure to Whole Body Vibration (WBV) and the high rates of low back disorders. Impulsive WBV exposures have been recognized as a risk factor for low back injury and new guidelines exist for their measurement and assessment (ISO 2631, Part 5). Methods to accurately and better characterize the impulsiveness of WBV along with the temporal patterns of the exposures are needed. The development of a hardware and software system to measure continuous TWA and raw, impulsive WBV exposures and the design of a subsequent study are presented. Methods Using two Larson Davis HVM 100 as accelerometer amplifiers, small external batteries, and a Pocket-PC (PDA) with 1 Gb of compact flash memory, we can collect up to 16 channels of data for a full day 600 Hz. Tri-axial WBV exposures will be measured and characterized at the frame of the bus and at the driver/seat interface (seatpad accelerometer). Using a repeated measures design, 20 bus drivers will drive on selected routes which include both city streets and highways, and within and between subject components of variability and exposure determinants related to the bus, bus seat, the bus driver, and the route will be identified. Global Positioning System (GPS) data will also be collected and integrated with the WBV exposure data to facilitate the identification of the location, velocity and type of road associated with high average TWA and impulsive WBV exposures. This system may be used to develop administrative (alter speed and/or route of bus, systematically vary type of routes) and/or engineering controls (identify and trigger the need for street repair) to reduce high WBV exposures. Results Our portable Pocket-PC based data acquisition system is up and running and we can collect seven channels of WBV data (seat pan tri-axial accelerometer, bus frame tri-axial accelerometer and GPS data) continuously for a full shift. The software analysis of the data is complex but nearing completion. We have incorporated the vibration dose calculations from ISO 5321, Part 5 and have obtained a Matlab-based routine to appropriately weight the continuous signals. Discussion In summary, the measurement of WBV is complex but new technologies open avenues of collecting and assessing WBV exposures that were previously not possible. The standardization of impulsive WBV exposure assessment methods is needed to further the discipline and better enable comparisons across studies.

This paper is the second and concluding report of the results of the twenty-fourth semiannual survey made by the Bureau of Mines of motor gasoline marketed in the United states. The first report on this 1931 survey gave the results of the examination of the gasoline samples in accordance with the new Federal specification for United States Government Motor Gasoline. The present paper reports results of the examination of the gasolines for color, doctor test gravity, end point, per cent recovered copper-dish gum, and steam-oven gum. The retail price and the tax at the time each sample was taken are also reported.

"INTRODUCTION The Park City district, situated 30 miles east of Salt Lake City, Utah, in the Wasatch Mountains, Is a well-known producer of lead, zinc, and precious metals. Nearly continuous production has been maintained from the dis¬trict since its early discovery about 1870. For approximately 50 years, gravity milling methods were employed to beneficiate Park City ore, and during that time tailings from the mills were sluiced down Silver Creek and deposited on lands below the camp for 7 miles.Owing to the large tonnage of tailings deposited along Silver Creek, considerable work was done in the past in the attempt to develop a low-cost concentration method for re-treating this material, but no-method was found that was economically feasible. The Bureau of Mines was asked to conduct beneficiation tests on Park City tailings in November 1944, and metallurgical studies were initiated at that time. This report summarizes the results of laboratory ore-dressing studies made on samples from the Grasselli deposit."

Two channel polarity coincidence and polarity difference statistics are analyzed. The signal, common to both channels, consists of sinusoidal bursts where the exact frequency of the signal is nearly known, but other parameters such as amplitude, phase, and pulse starting time are unknown. The noise inputs are dependent, narrow band, Markov processes. It is shown that the performance depends not only on the signal uncertainties, but on the precise shape of the cross-correlation functions between the noise in-puts. By using two polairty difference statistics in addition to the polarity coincidence statistic, it is shown that the decrease in performance, as well as the cost of hard limiting due to correlated inputs, can be made small.

Results of the mineral resource study of the Upper Priest Lake RARE II study area indicate a low potential for the discovery and economic recovery of silver and lead in the Prichard Formation near contacts with the Kaniksu Batholith in the vicinity of the Mountain Chief Mine (fig. 1). Silver and lead minerals locally occur disseminated and in irregular quartz fissure-fillings in the Prichard Formation. Between 18^6 and 1967, 105 lode raining claims were located in the study area. The area was designated for "further planning" in the Final Environmental statement but was later changed to "nonwilderness" by President Carter after work was scheduled for the area.

Assessment of workplace exposures is an important tool for helping to minimize dust-related occupational illness and diseases. Real-time particulate monitoring can effectively locate areas where dust controls are needed and determine how well they are working. An affordable, person-wearable, real-time dust monitor is needed. The SKC Inc. Dust Detective (SKCDD) fulfills those requirements (Disclaimer: Mention of any company or product does not imply endorsement by NIOSH). The SKCDD consists of a disposable sampling tube (DST) connected to a small hand-held sampling pump. The SKCDD was developed through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and SKC Inc. The relationship of dust concentrations measured by personal gravimetric samplers to those measured by the SKCDD was determined in a laboratory aerosol chamber. A comparison of the means and the relative standard deviation of triplicate measurements of each type of sampling device demonstrated the SKCDD to be a viable alternative means for measuring dust. While it provides accurate measurements for specific coal types, it requires correction factors (those correction factors still need to be calculated) for other coal types.

The possible value of the red hematite iron ore of the southern Appalachian States, if some practicable method of concentrating it could be devised, has long been recognized. The ore is very low grade, and although in enormous quantities, particularly in the States of Alabama, Tennessee, and Georgia, is only at a few points rich enough to work, and even the best of it ranks among the lowest grade iron ores being mined in the United States. A cheap method of beneficiating this ore would make enormous quantities available and vastly increase the iron-ore resources of the country. However, this low-grade ore in effect constitutes a potential iron reserve, and as long as ample quantities of ore can be obtained elsewhere the question of its utilization does not demand immediate notice. Where these ores are in part of workable grade, however, a problem of more immediate importance arises which, from considerations of economy and prevention of waste in their mining, ought to be solved or, at least, attacked as quickly as possible. Where these ores are being worked they are usually intimately associated with lower-grade material that in mining is left behind. The difficulty and expense of going into ground broken by old workings makes the recovery of this lower-grade ore practically impossible and it is lost forever. Success in concentrating the red ores, therefore, would save material that is now being irretrievably lost. The successful large-scale concentration of law-grade ore in the last few years on the Lake Superior iron ranges should encourage the attack of similar problems in the Birmingham district.

Mining activity during 1977 was limited to the production of limestone, marl, and sand and gravel, all of which were used domestically. Public works projects consumed the major portion of the construction material produced. The consortium of oil companies operating as Esso Ventures Inc., drilled one exploratory well off the coast of southern Belize. For drilling the well, Exxon Corp. received a 57% working interest in the consortium's concession located 40 kilometers east of Puta Gorda. No other offshore drilling was attempted in 1977. Esso also drilled a well on the Anschutz Overseas Inc. concession in the Toledo District of south- eastern Belize. The attempt wee abandoned, but seismic activities continued.
