The firing times of millisecond-delayed initiators are random variables that exhibit varying degrees of scatter. This scatter can cause crowding and overlap of adjacent delay periods, which results in adverse effects on safety, fragmentation, and blasting vibrations.

As part of a series of seismic experiments designed to improve the understanding of the impact of mining blasts on verifying a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, a sixteen station network of three-component seismic sensors were deployed around a large cast shot in the Black Thunder Mine. The seismic stations were placed, where possible, at a range of 2.5 kilometers with a constant inter-station spacing of 22.5 degrees. All of the data were recorded with the seismometers oriented such that the radial component pointed to the middle point of the approximately 2 kilometer long shot. High quality data were recorded at each station. Data were scaled to a range of 2.5 kilometers and the sum of the absolute value of the vertical, radial, and transverse channels computed. These observations were used to construct radiation patterns of the seismic energy propagating from the cast shot. It is obvious that cast shots do not radiate seismic energy isotropically. Most of the vertical motion occurs behind the highwall while radial and transverse components of motion are enhanced in directions parallel to the highwall.

Although unproven, it is suspected that there have been eleven locations since 1988 where explosive generated carbon monoxide (CO) gas moved through the earth and accumulated in nearby underground enclosed spaces. This paper summarizes the incidents, which involved about 30 suspected or medically verified CO poisonings and 1 fatality. Ten incidents occurred in residences and one occurred in a manhole. Although practically nothing is known about the mechanism behind the suspected gas migration, review of the incidents and available information indicates there are certain warning signs and a successful remediation technique available. In each case, overburden heavily confined the explosive in the blasts, preventing release of explosive-generated gases to the atmosphere. All the blasts were in residential areas, and none were excavated immediately. Where the distance from the blast was recorded, 5 of the blasts were within 20 to 50 feet (ft) (6 to 15 meters [m]) of the underground enclosed spaces, 3 were 100 to 150 ft (30 to 46 m) away, and 1 was 400 to 500 ft (120 to 150 m) away. Investigators often identified suspected pathways from the blast site into the underground enclosed spaces. One technique appeared successful at quickly correcting an existing condition. This technique involved applying negative pressure to the earth and removing the CO from the ground surrounding the underground enclosed space.

In February 28, 2001 JOULE coordinated the first tests with an electronic detonator in South America at an iron ore operation - ITABIRA MINES from the Brazilian COMPANHIA VALE DO RIO DOCE (CVRD) - the largest producer and exporter of iron ore in the world. ITABIRA MINES (CAU and CONCEI O) belong to one of the complexes, called the Southern System, producing 56 million tons of ROM as well as concentrated products and pellets. This paper is going to describe the tests at ITABIRA MINES with results indicating the improvement in the excavator productivity and reduction of the mining global costs (due to the better performance of the equipment and potential reduction of the maintenance cost).

In 1998, the Blast Vibration and Seismograph Section of the International Society of Explosives Engineers formed a working group to collect and compile a list of regulations limiting ground vibrations from blasting. The goal was to locate those countries, states, provinces, and cities that have such regulations, identify which governmental body enforces them, and determine what limits on ground vibrations are imposed upon the blasting operations. In the course of this study, data was collected from over 60 jurisdictions where peak particle velocity restrictions range from non-existent to very stringent. Some of the regulations were found to be based upon standards grounded in good science, while others possess little or no technical justification. This presentation will summarize the findings of the subcommittee, focusing primarily on what the limits are, which type of blasting operations must adhere to them, and to what structures they apply. The degree to which these regulations are based upon valid scientific and engineering research will be discussed. Description of Project: The four photos show a chimney blasting operation in Vienna’s district of Floridsdorf on May 4 2011. The blasting was done with two types of charges. An internal charge provided a force of blast which resulted in 135 single electrical blasting caps initiated detonations on the basic ensured the straight collapse of the chimney. The preparation work was done by reserve force military engineers. The series of photos were shot by Elisabeth Zechmeister. She works in the Austrian DOD but not as a professional photographer; much more she did all activities in her spare time.

This paper consists of the conduct of a forensic criminal investigation of the components, construction, use, and functioning of two suicide bombs. As the title states, the task was to form professional opinions as to whether the bombs would work, would cause property damage, and would injure or kill. The bombs were created and installed by a defendant in a Federal death penalty case where the defendant’s daughter was killed in a shootout with the West Virginia State Police. The two black powder bombs were placed under the front seats of the defendant’s automobile and were designed to function by the use of a toggle switch connected to the automobile’s cigarette lighter. The forensic work first consisted of an inspection of the remains of the wiring system and bombs at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms Laboratory, in Ammendale, MD. This was necessary to determine and detail the wire diameter and lengths, the lengths and size of the wire used, the type of toggle switch used, the type of containers, the type of rocket motors used to initiate the black powder, the manufacturer and amount of black powder used in each bomb, and the type, wraps, and amount of duct tape used for the construction of each bomb. Using this data, tests were conducted by duplicating the wiring system and the two bombs to insure that the system functioned properly. Each bomb was duplicated and initiated to observe the violence produced when initiated in the open air. Duplicate bombs were placed under the seats of a similar type of automobile and initiated. The purposes of the tests were to duplicate the bombs, to observe the violence of the initiation, and to observe the damages to the automobile produced by the initiation.

It is well known that emulsion explosives can be dead-pressed especially in underground blasting. Voids in emulsion explosives will affect such malfunction of explosives. To clarify the factors that affect the dead-pressing phenomena, the characteristics of the pressure wave propagation in emulsion explosives were investigated. Three types of microballoons .or microbubbles, glass microballoons(GMB), resin microballoons(RMB) and chemical gas bubbles, were used as sensitizers for emulsion explosives. The pressure profiles inside the explosives were measured to determine the effects of the microballoons or microbubbles contained. The underwater explosion test and the large-scale drop hammer test were carried out to load the explosives with a dynamic pressure and a quasi-dynamic pressure respectively. In the underwater explosion test, the pressure profiles in the emulsion explosives were measured by a piezo-electric pressure gauge inserted to the center of the explosive cartridge which had a diameter of 30mm. In the large-scale drop hammer test, the same type of pressure gauge was placed at the bottom of the explosives. From these experiments, the following results were obtained ; A) The pressure profiles in the sample explosives sensitized by RMB or chemical gases were sharp, while in the sample explosives sensitized by GMB the profile was broad. B) The peak pressure levels in the sample explosives sensitized by RMB or chemical gases were twice as high as that in the sample explosives sensitized by GMB in the underwater explosion test. However in the large-scale drop hammer test, the amplification of the peak pressure is low compared with in the underwater explosion test. C) The impulse value was independent of the types of the microballoons or microbubbles in both tests. It was concluded that the type of the microballoons or microbubbles significantly influenced the characteristics of the pressure wave propagation in emulsion explosives.

The Pinkerton Tunnel open cut project is part of the National Gateway Clearance Initiative improvement project to achieve a minimum of 21 feet of vertical clearance along CSX Transportation rail corridor so that double-stacked intermodal railcars can be transported between mid-Atlantic states and their ports to midwest markets in the U.S. This project involved drilling and blasting of 1.2 million bank cubic yards of rock over a 14 month period while maintaining rail traffic of two passenger and 38 freight trains daily.
