Anglo American Platinum practices fine grinding in its processing plants to enhance the liberation of valuable minerals. If the fine particles of valuable minerals generated during fine grinding are not recovered during the flotation process, this could significantly contribute to the overall losses. This study examines the flotability of fine moncheite (PGE mineral) particles in a controlled environment (moncheite size distribution, concentration and liberation). A barren Norite ore ground to 40% and 80% passing 53µm was spiked, with four different size fractions of moncheite (-5, -10+5, -25+10 and -53+25µm) in order to evaluate the effect of particle size on flotation. The investigation also included the effect of energy input and collector dosage on the flotation of two moncheite size fractions, namely -5µm and -10+5µm. The results showed that the moncheite particle size has a significant impact on flotation. Coarse particles (-53+25µm) showed the highest Pt flotation kinetics and overall recoveries. The -5µm size fraction of moncheite could also be recovered by flotation, however, at a lower rate compared to the other size classes investigated. The increased collector dosage of 300g/t at the finer Norite grind of 80% passing 53µm enhanced the flotation rate of the -5µm size fraction of moncheite when compared to the lower collector dosage of 150g/t. The higher energy input during laboratory flotation, at an impeller speed of 1000rpm also increased the flotation rate of the -5µm size range, however, at a lower concentrate grade, when compared to the lower impeller speed of 700rpm. More favourable Pt flotation kinetics data was obtained for the -53 +25µm size fraction of moncheite at the fine Norite grind when compared to the coarse Norite grind. Results of flotation process combined with atmospheric leaching and high pressure leaching for recovery of copper from low-grade silicate-copper ore have been presented in this study. The low-grade copper ore contains a small amount of copper (0.42 mass %), iron (4.6 mass %), and silicon (38.3 mass%) and among many other metals (Al, Ca, K, Mg, Na, Ti and S). The main mineralogical constituents of the copper ore are calcium aluminosilicate (Ca(Al2Si2O8), amesite (Mg2Al2SiO5(OH)4) and gypsum (CaSO4×H2O), and quartz (SiO2) as resulted from the alteration of an igneous rock. This study has shown that about 92 % of copper can be recovered with a maximum copper grade of 4.2 mass% in a froth after 15 minutes of flotation at pH 8.5 when used potassium amyl xanthate as a collector, MIBC and Dow-froth 250 as frothers and calcium hydroxide as a pH adjuster. The images of bubbles in the cell during flotation process were recorded using a high-speed camera. The froth concentrate with average copper grade of 2.0 mass% was further processed by atmospheric leaching with a solution of sulphuric acid and hydrochloric acid, respectively and high pressure leaching with sulphuric acid solution. As a result, leaching rate of copper reached about 60 % in an atmospheric leaching with sulphuric and hydrochloric acid respectively, whereas the rate can reach more than 70 % by autoclave leaching at high pressure under the controlled condition. A process to recover of copper from its low-grade ore can be developed by optimization of flotation combined with acid leaching.

Red mud is the major waste material produced during digestion of bauxite ores with caustic soda in alumina production following the Bayer?s process. Its disposal remains a worldwide issue in terms of environmental concerns. A lot of research and developmental activities are going on throughout the world to find effective utilization of red mud, which involves various product developments. At present, building materials, industries are fast growing industrial sector where the need of various raw materials is enormous. The use of red mud in building material production is one of the options for conservation of natural resources and reduction of environmental pollution. A cost-effective and energy efficient mineral cementation process has been developed at CSIR-IMMT, Bhubaneswar for use of red mud in manufacture of building brick, block and aggregate. The red mud is an alkaline material, which contains both leachable and non-leachable soda along with different mineral constituents of alumina, iron and silica. The effort has been made to use the mineral constituents of red mud to develop cold setting building brick by mineral cementation process using a binder specially prepared from Portland Slag Cement, Lime, Gypsum and Alkali metal sulfates. The red mud has been used from 40 to 70% by weight along with fly ash and binder in development of cold setting building brick conforming to the specification of IS:12894:2002.

"The traditional lignin separation process from the precipitated suspension creates severe filtration problems by plugging of the filter medium due to the small particle size (20 to 60 µm) of the suspended lignins. The plugging causes further problems in the successive processing of the filter cake. A new lignin separation process has been developed at the Brandenburg University of Technology (BTU) Cottbus as a part of the Research and Development and Demonstration (R & D & D) project "LignoBioFuel". The new developed process separates lignin in the form of granules with diameters ranging from 100 µm to 300 µm. The restrainment of the granule’s size in their successive treatments is expected to result in higher filtration efficiencies and reduction in plugging of filter mediums. To evaluate the filtration efficiency, the filtration resistance of the produced granules as well as the conventional suspensions has been investigated. The results show that there is a 60 to 80 % filtration efficiency increase and around 60 % reduction in plugging of filter mediums with the lignin granules in comparison to the conventional suspensions. Furthermore the successive processing of lignin granules was easier due to their porous structures removing the impurities such as adherent acids and salts. The purity of the separated lignin was measured with their sulphur (reduced from 7 % to 2.7 %) and ash (reduced from 46 % to 0.5 %) contents. The newly developed process has displayed better results in comparison to that of the conventional process. The new process displays high potentials in optimizing and improving the present state of the art treatments and is promising several ecological, economical and environmental improvements."

In spite of the importance of the slurry transport and discharge in autogenous and semiautogen-ous (AG/SAG) mills, it is evident that a more comprehensive and useful model is still required. Semi-empirical models used up to now have many limitations and cannot be used beyond the ranges in which they were developed. The breakage of particles as they are transported along a mill com-plicates the experimental analysis and the modelling of the transport process within the mill. The interaction of the grate discharge and the pulp lifters, with the added issue of backflow from the pulp chamber into the mill, makes the discharge modelling process difficult. In order to overcome these difficulties, a mechanistic approach has been applied. The general transport and discharge model was subdivided into four independent models: Flow through the charge, flow through the grate, flow in the pulp lifter, and flow-back. This paper gives an overall description of the modelling approach and discusses in particular the modelling of transport of fluids through the charge. In order to evaluate and calibrate the model, experimental work was carried out. To evaluate the gradient pressure under different conditions of charge packing and flow rate, a specialised experimental rig with a highly sensitive pressure gauge was used. Preliminary results identify the differences of the charge and grate on the restriction of flow. The existence of a dynamic voidage in our particular system was more evident and as a result, a semi-empirical correlation for the voidage was developed. In general, results show that the me-chanistic model derived from Ergun?s equation for flow through a packed bed can be satisfactorily adapted.

Effects of irregularity, rough surface and aggregation of fine particles on ultrasonic attenuation are significant. The effects should be considered while predicting particle size by ultrasonic attenuation technology. The scanning electron microscope micrographs analysis also shows that particles surface is rough and irregularity. Any slurries has its fractal structure and its special fractal scale and dimension, so, effects of irregularity, rough surface and aggregation of fine particles can be de-scribed by fractal model. The discrepancies between predictions of ultrasonic attenuation based on the assumption of smooth spherical particles and data obtained from slurries of irregular particles indicated that there were different fractal structures. The ultrasonic attenuation model was modified by fractal dimensions. The result of experimental data and analogue calculation indicated that pre-dictions of the fractal modification of ultrasonic attenuation model show good agreement with experimental data. On the other hand, from the values of fractal obtained by inversely calculation, the degree of effects of irregularity, rough surface and aggregation of particles can be estimated. The positive value of fractal dimension indicates that the aggregation has the dominant effect on ultra-sonic attenuation, otherwise, the irregularity and rough surface has the dominant effect.

Yunnan mineral is a kind of containing Ta-Nb rare earth deposit, the most potential economic valuable element in it is Sc, and raw mineral has 17.0 g/t Sc. Take the character of Sc into account, the key problem in producing scandium chloride molten salt by adaptive technology is how to man-ufacturer anhydrous scandium chloride molten salt. During the course above, the key problem is that preventing Scandium chloride from being hy-drolyzed into ScOCl. The ScOCl content of molten salt not only affect purifying scandium but al-so do harm to the production of Mg-Al alloy. In order to restrain the creation of ScOCl, add ammo-nium chloride into molten salt. As long as ScOCl is created, it would be chloridized. Thus, during the course of dehydrating anhydrous chloride molten salt this method prevents scandium from hydrolyzing. Accordingly, the key phase of this producing course is eliminate ammonium chloride and the surplus crystal water, and the most crucial of it is restrain scandium chloride from being hydrolyzed into ScOCl. This research analyzed the theory that ammonium chloride is trend to be hydrolyzed into ammo-nium chloride, and propose the research scheme of restraining this process from creating ScOCl. The new process of restraining the generating of ScOCl and dehydration for crystal water rare earth chloride is adopted: Inert gas temperature increases rapidly to a certain degree to eliminate ammonium chloride and crystal water. The experimental research were done such as : the temperature of eliminating ammonium chloride and crystal water, amount of ammonium chloride, time, temperature growth speed, influence of inert gas flow toward to scandium percent hydrolysis, whereby, we conclude the optimal process condition in this period: Temperature: 400°C, proportion of oxidized scandium and ammonium chloride is 1:1.5(Proportion of oxidized scandium and additional salt is 1:5.4), time is 120minute, temperature growth speed is 10?/min inert gas flow is 5L/min.

India is the third largest producer with accounting to fifth largest reserves base of coal in the world. Indian coal has high ash content (15-45%) and low calorific value. The basic processes being used in India at different places for coal washing adopts old techniques. Much of the valuable part is being lost during washing processes. With enhancement of the available techniques and use of new processes like flotation process indicates better recovery of carbon values during washing stage. The same will increase the reserve base, improve economy of operation and alleviate environment related problems. In the above backdrop this paper portrays the case study of an existing coal processing plant in India. The case study includes the modifications being incorporated in the existing process to enhance the product value. The existing practices and the future trend of process technology that could be adopted to meet the requirements in this country are also discussed. Pyrometallurgical reactors constitute a key processing component in the total primary and industrial/recycling resource cycle, being involved both in primary smelting, converting and extraction, as well as the reprocessing of scrap, from aluminium cans to end-of-life automobiles. Therefore the pyrometallurgical reactor?s role in achieving sustainability is the central theme discussed in this paper since optimising their operation minimises waste, residue and offgas (NOx, dioxin, CO2) and maximises product quality and therefore efficiency. To effectively control the overall resource cycle, one needs to take a systems modelling approach of the whole cycle, seeking to also understand the dynamic process behaviour of the individual components of the cycle, and then especially the part that contributes most to the chemical conversion, namely the pyrometallurgical reactor. This paper highlights the role of pyrometallurgical thermodynamics in the whole resource cycle and specifically places equilibrium thermochemistry in the context of process dynamics where large, variable inventories are recycled or maintained within the system. This paper will therefore review the semi-empirical dynamic modelling tools, which are used to model complex systems with the specific goal of developing dynamic predictive models, which also include slag-alloy chemistry, towards controlling the recycling in a feed forward manner. To illustrate the primary production of metals, high carbon ferrochrome and Ni-Cu-matte smelting will be presented as a brief case study. Also fundamental studies in blast furnace and waste incineration kilns will be given. It also will show how the distributed nature of the chemistry of melts in the case of primary extraction, and industrial (recycling) materials such as recycled end-of-life vehicles, have a significant impact on the process outcomes and model predictions. It is therefore argued that the fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics in metallurgical reactors play a final crucial role in modelling the closed material cycle, but only when it is used in conjunction with process systems theory based on reconciled data for parameter estimation and model calibration. System models for aluminium and car recycling will be given as well as a dynamical system model that describes the interconnected material flows for Ag, Au, Bi, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb, PGM, Sn and Zn for a study on lead-free solder.

The design of a hydrometallurgical process starts with the analysis of the raw materials to be treated, for example mineralogy, chemistry, deposit size are analysed. Based on this information suitable unit processes for pre-treatment, leaching, solution purification and product recovery are selected. Typically, process design for the new ore deposit relies on laboratory tests such as pre-treatment and leaching experiments. The experimental work is the most time consuming and expensive part of the process design. Reducing the number of experiments would shorten the time of designing a new flowsheet or development of new process technology. A large amount of information is available about the hydrometallurgical experiments and the amount is increasing continuously. For example, word search using ?hydrometallurgy? from Scopus database results in over 4 000 publications with the word in title, abstract or keywords. This number consists of 2 500 articles, 900 conference papers, and 90 reviews since 1972. The number of hydrometallurgical publications per year has increased from 13 in 1972 to 150-200 in the last few years. The objective of this study was to analyze how detailed data of experiments about the gold extraction is published and how that data could be exploited more effectively when designing hydrometallurgical processing for new ore. The leading idea is that similar ores should have the similar response in leaching. If the published information was used more efficiently, the amount of experiments would be reduced. More than 200 cases of experimental data of gold leaching have been analyzed for this study. There are over 30 factors that could be used in comparison when selecting process alternatives, but challenging fact is that not all these factors are documented in all publications. Results show that the usefulness of the published data in the development of hydrometallurgical flow sheet for gold using decision-support tools is not that straightforward. The quality of the published information about gold extraction varied between the publications and the descriptions of the raw materials, experimental arrangements and results were often missing details. Methods to normalize the data for description of the cases and a system to describe different features unambiguously are needed. "The effects of pH value and dissolved oxygen(DO) in the pulp to the Eh and flotation recovery of pyrite were investigated using potential online detection system. The effects of DO on the Eh and flotation recovery were tested which DO changed from 0.5mg/L to 19.5mg/L in six different pH buffer flotation systems (pH: 4.00, 5.62, 6.86, 9.18, 10.01 and 10.96 respectively). Results of potential detected online demonstrated that the pyrite electrode has nearly the same response to potential as with platinum electrode for the FeS2-xanthate-H2O flotation system under the study conditions. Pulp potential and recovery of pyrite were remarkably influenced by pH, both of them decreased with the increasing of pH and, especially, sharp decreased after pH above 9. As the concentration of DO was increased, the Eh was also increased in all the six different buffer solution, while the flotation recovery was decreased. And the amplitude of variation for Eh was not obvious in acidic and neutral solutions, but on the contrary, the change for flotation recovery was remarkable in neutral and alkaline conditions. This may indicate that the flotation of pyrite will be deteriorated in alkaline and high DO concentration conditions."

"Lamps and lighting products are the most commonly used electrical products around the globe. With the improvement in lamp technologies, lighting products have grown complex and hence require an improved recycling process. The LED lamps consist of various valuable metals such as iron, copper, aluminum, chromium, silver, and gold, as well as non-metals such as glass, plastics, and fibers. In addition, there are also traces of hazardous substances such as lead, arsenic, and mercury. A major step in the recovery process is size reduction, and researchers have suggested that up to 40% of the total valuable material is lost during the shredding and grinding processes. SELFRAG is a high voltage selective fragmentation comminution technology that uses high voltage pulses in a water medium to efficiently separate the metals at a coarser size without generating many fine particles. It has been proposed that during the fragmentation process of electronic waste (e-waste), the metals can be separated without fine grinding. This research considers the applicability of high voltage pulse fragmentation for LED lamps. Eight different types of LED lamps were processed through the SELFRAG unit at varying pulses to study metal liberation. The product obtained was characterized for metal liberation, metal grades, and liberation analysis. The specific energy consumption for this size reduction process was also monitored. INTRODUCTION Lamps and bulbs are the most commonly used electrical products in homes, offices, industrial operations, and streets. According to Energy Star research (2006), an average US household has more than 40 sockets for light bulbs and consumes approximately 2100kWh every year for lighting. The development in lamp technology has pushed the boundary for newer products. The LED lamps have been taking over the market from the incandescent bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps (CFL). According to the US Department of Energy (2012) and myLEDlight.com (2007), LED lamps have several benefits over other lamps. LEDs produce light hemi-spherically, which increases their efficiency in directional light emission. It has higher breakage resistance from vibration or transportation. LED lamps use up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs thus making them highly energy efficient; They have a longer lifespan, lasting 10 times longer than a CFL and 133 times longer than the traditional incandescent bulb. Because of all the benefits, Smallwood (2014) suggested that the market of LED lamps will grow to $12.2 billion by 2018."

Most Chinese titanium bearing minerals are the composition of magnetite vanadium and ilmenite. All of such mineral processing plants use low intensity magnetic separators to recover magnetite and vanadium goes with magnetite. In the past years most of the plant tails containing about 10% TiO2 were abandoned. Now many of these plants use SLon magnetic separators to recover ilmenite in the roughing stage, which can throw away most of the gangs and slimes with very low cost. The new development of applications of SLon magnetic separators in Chinese ilmenite processing industry is introduced in the paper.

This paper details the optimization of rougher Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS) using response surface methodology. The optimization is in parametric form and takes account of the major operating variables in WHIMS operation such as current in ampere and grid gap, in inch. The objective is to recover ilmenite mineral from red sediment deposits of Srikakulam, India by optimizing the rougher WHIMS. We predict mineral recoveries as a function of current and grid gap. Combination of these predictions with assay data provides predictions of mineral grades and recoveries. The optimized response was validated against data derived from laboratory-scale rougher WHIMS test work, comprising (i) mineral grade, (ii) mineral recovery, and (iii) separation efficiency of the process. We observed close match between the experimental and the predicted data over most of the operational range. This paper describes how the optimization was carried out using the response surface methodology along with MATLAB. The response surface was used to closely investigate the separation of ilmenite mineral by varying ampere and grid gap. The results show that under optimum conditions, such as 3.5 amp current (0.53 Tesla) and 2 inch grid gap, the mineral grade could reach, as high as 87.9% in the concentrate with 74.3 % recovery and 74.4% yield. Structural alteration of pyrophyllite during mechanical activation in a planetary mill was investigated by X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Mechanochemical effect markedly promotes the decrease in reflection intensities with increasing the grinding time. Prolonged grinding causes the pyrophyllite to become the amorphous structure. It can be indicated that pyrophyllite is very susceptible to alteration by grinding. Crystal size (d006) of pyrophyllite appears to be a limit after 2h grinding. IR spectroscopy analysis shows a little alteration in the bands of pyrophyllite after mechanical activation. The results indicate that the ordered structure of pyrophyllite is destroyed and lattice deformation occurs. Porous silica was then successfully prepared via leaching the mechanically activated pyrophyllite. Pyrophyllite was first ground for 6 h. Ground samples were subsequently leached with 4 M hy-drochloric acid at 80 °C for 2 h to produce porous silica with specific surface area of 188.1 m2/g, total pore volume of 0.18 mL/g and average pore size of 3.9 nm from N2 adsorption analysis. Otherwise, the porous silica obtained from direct leaching of the original pyrophyllite only has a specific surface area of 4.3 m adsorption analysis. 2/g and total pore volume of 0.03 mL/g. It is inferred that grinding is favorable for the formation of microstructure pores. It offers a simple and convenient route for the preparation of porous materials from natural minerals.

The feed to Chadurmalu iron ore concentrator plant is a mixture of magnetite and haematite iron ore with a Fe/FeO ratio of about 8. The feed to plant, after grinding via wet SAG mill, is pre-separated by wet low intensity magnetic separator. Magnetic product is conducted to magnetite processing circuit for producing magnetite concentrate, and nonmagnetic product is directed to haematite processing circuit. Due to surface oxidization of magnetite particles and a decrease in magnetic attraction properties, significant amount of these particles are misled to tailing which results in decreasing the efficiency of haematite processing circuit. This problem can be remedied by using magnetic drum separator with more magnetic intensity and/or gradient. In this paper, the replacement of LIMS separators with wet medium intensity magnetic separators with a field intensity of 3800 gauss on drum surface (MIMS) have been suggested and considered as the most suitable solution to prevent the loss of magnetite particles. The results of carried out investigations with replacement of drum separators in industrial scale, showed that utilizing MIMS in magnetite processing circuit resulted in increasing final concentrate weight recovery on average by 2.59%, without any adverse effect on the concentrate quality; decreasing the magnetite content in the feed to high gradient magnetic separator (HGMS) by about 3.5%; decreasing the feed to floatation part by about 7% and consequently decreasing consumption of chemical reagents; increasing Fe/FeO ratio of the feed to plant. One of Vale?s sponsored research project is aimed at the implementation of a practical scale-up procedure for flotation. In this context, detailed flotation kinetics characterization is of critical importance. This work presents the results of a campaign aimed at characterizing flotation kinetic parameters with respect to particle composition. MLA analysis was carried out for 40 narrow-sized iron ore particles with known flotation time from a controlled flotation kinetic test. The iron ore sample studied (59% hematite and 41% quartz) comes from a mine in the southeast of Brazil and the type of reagents applied are the same as used in the plant. For the reagent conditions tested, the overall rougher concentrate (sink) yielded 79.1%, pure quartz and hematite recoveries to the froth were 56.0% and 4.8%, respectively. The results from the kinetic tests show that the flotation rate of the particles doesn?t vary much (~0.03s-1) with composition and that the fraction of floatable particles in each grade controls the separation action. The results show that the rate of flotation is controlled by transport and that the selectivity is controlled by the fraction of floatable particle of each phase.

Soil contamination by organic compounds is one of the most concerned issues on polluted soil. It is well known that there are limited methods to remediate the contaminated soil on site. Especially, the in-situ method for contaminated soil is too difficult to de-contaminate the organic pollutant. In this study, the fundamental ability of soil remediation, which aimed to decrease oil concentration in, in-situ process, have been researched by using a high pressure gas generated from ?crush composition? on artificially oil contaminated soil. The n-hexadecane (n-C16H34) and other organic compounds were selected as soil oil contaminators, gravimetric analysis by soxhlet extraction and GC-MS were used as qualitative and quantitative analysing methods. For the experimental examination, the influences on the difference in the concentration of n-hexadecane (and other organics), the tamping amount, position and repetition of crush composition in soil, and scale (size) of experimental model were investigated. The n-hexadecane concentration reduced by the explosive effect of crush composition showed a reasonable decrease of about 30 wt%~60 wt% compared to the initial n-hexadecane. The removed amount of n-hexadecane and distance from explosion point of the crush composition was related in scale and model of contaminated soil.

"The extractive metallurgy of precious metal ores involves gravity concentration, flotation and cyanide leaching. Pre-oxidation, such as roasting, autoclaving, bacterial oxidation and other techniques, is required for processing refractory ores. Selection of the process is mainly driven by the grade, reserve and mineralogy of the target elements. The concentrations of precious metals in the crust are extremely low and highly variable, resulting in ore variability in many gold, silver and PGE deposits. More importantly, precious metals in an ore may occur in two or three forms (i.e. microscopic, submicroscopic and surface-bound), making ore processing of precious metals extremely challenging. The objective of geometallurgy and process mineralogy is to reduce and minimize the technical risk in project evaluation, process selection, mine planning and production forecasting through geometallurgical modelling, representative sampling and subsequent systematic mineralogical characterization and metallurgical testwork. Geometallurgy is a technique to document variability within an orebody and quantify and evaluate the impact of many factors including geology and mineralogy on grinding, flotation, leaching and metal recovery processes, while mineralogy is one of the major predictive and trouble-shooting tools for many new mineral projects and operating mines. This paper presents an overview of fundamentals, methodologies and techniques applied in geometallurgy and process mineralogy and highlights the importance of both disciplines in process selection and plant optimization with applicable case studies. INTRODUCTION Precious metals, including gold, silver and platinum group elements (PGE) occur in various geological settings and ore types. The concentrations of these metals in the crust are extremely low and highly variable, resulting in ore variability in many gold, silver and PGE deposits. More importantly, precious metals in an ore may occur in two or three forms (i.e. microscopic, submicroscopic and surface-bound), making ore processing of precious metals extremely challenging. Process selection is most important in any precious metals project and is mainly driven by the grade, reserve and mineralogy of the target elements. Free-milling ores, such as Kupol in Russia, Hemlo in Canada, Grasburg in Indonesia, UG-2 in South Africa, Lac des Iles in Canada, and Noril’sk in Russia, can be processed using flotation or cyanidation with or without gravity. B2Gold Corp, a Canadian gold company, just started a number of new and under construction free-milling gold operations such as Fekola mill in Mali, Mastbati mine in Philippins and Otjikoto mine in Nambia. However, refractory ores (particularly gold ores), such as the Carlin and Goldstrike mines in the USA, Giant in Canada, Pueblo Viejo in Dominican Republic, Porgera and Lihire in PNG, Kittilla in Finland, Fairview in South Africa and Shuiyindong in China, must be processed using pre-oxidation prior to cyanide leaching. In some mildly refractory gold ores, such as Kumtor mine in Kyrgyzstan and KCGM in Australia, ultrafine grinding is required to liberate fine-grained gold particles. For some gold ores containing both free-milling and refractory components (such as Cripple Creek mine in Colorado, USA), two or more recovery processes may be required. The variability of grade, metal deportment, ore hardness and other parameters is one of the risks that encountered in development and operation of many precious metals projects. To minimize and reduce the technical risk caused by ore variability, geometallurgy and process mineralogy have been used by mining companies in the last two decades to measure and quantify the spatial variability of the deposits that are being developed. Separation Technologies, LLC (ST) has developed a processing system based on triboelectric charging and electrostatic separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. The environmentally friendly process can eliminate wet processing and required drying of the final material. The process requires little if any pre-treatment of the material other than grinding and operates at high capacity ? up to 40 tonnes per hour by a compact machine. Energy consumption is low, approximately 1 kWh/tonnes of material processed. Since the only potential emission of the process is dust, permitting is typically relatively easy. In contrast to the other available electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the ST belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (500 µm) materials with very high throughputs. The triboelectric particle charging is effective for a wide range of materials and only requires particle ? particle contact. The small gap, high electric field, counter current flow, vigorous particle-particle agitation and self-cleaning action of the belt on the electrodes are the critical features of the ST separator. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through charging / recharging and internal recycle results in far superior separations and is effective on fine materials that cannot be separated at all by the conventional electrostatic techniques. Since 1995, this triboelectric process has been extensively used for the beneficiation of coal fly ash with eighteen separators in place and over 100 machine-years of operation at locations in the North America and Europe. The technology has been also successfully applied to the beneficiation of a variety of minerals including calcium carbonates, talc, and potash.
