"Most underground diesel equipment is equipped with diesel oxidization catalysts (DOCs) to reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. DOCs do not alter nitrogen oxides concentrations but can promote the oxidization of nitric oxide (NO) to the more toxic nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Vale and CanmetMINING have been researching how to reduce worker exposure to diesel emissions by testing mining equipment DOCs. Results indicate a > 77% decrease in carbon monoxide concentration but a 46–315% increase in NO2 concentration for 8-mode test cycles. It is recommended that DOCs that increase NO2 emissions be evaluated regarding their continued use in underground operations.RÉSUMÉ La plupart des équipements miniers souterrains sont équipés de catalyseurs d’oxydation diesel (DOC) afin de réduire les émissions de monoxyde de carbone et d’hydrocarbures. Les DOC ne modifient pas les concentrations des oxydes d’azote mais ils peuvent faciliter l’oxydation du monoxide d’azote (NO) en dioxyde d’azote (NO2), plus toxique. Vale et CanmetMINING effectuent des recherches pour réduire l’exposition des travailleurs aux émissions de diesel en analysant les DOC des équipements miniers. Selon les résultats, une diminution > 77 % dans la concentration de monoxyde de carbone est atteinte mais elle est accompagnée d’une augmentation de 46 à 315 % de la concentration en NO2 pour des cycles d’essais à 8 modes. "The Icon Sullivan Joint Venture ore deposit was discovered in June, 1965 by Messrs. Paul Benard, Bob Galipeau and Mac Watson working under the direction of Mr. Andrew J. Troop, as employees of the Icon syndicate. The deposit is located on the Waconichici River as the south end of Baie du Poste of Lake Mistassini, approximately 45 miles north of Chibougamau. Property acquisition and Winkie drilling was followed by a diamond drilling program to evaluate the deposit. Stripping of the open pit area connnenced in the late fall of 1966 and the first test sample of ore was shipped to Chibougamau in December of that year.Regular ore shipments to the mill of Merrill Island Mining Corporation Limited for concentration commenced May 25, 1967. Production to December 31, 1970 amounts to 42,960,000 pounds of pay copper.The ore is chalcopyrite in white quartz dolomite, and it contains a very small amount of precious metals. The quartz dolomite assumes a flat to gently dipping attitude and is associated with a graphitic argillite contact zone on both hanging and footwall sides, in dolomitic limestone rocks. There is practically no other sulphide present in the ore.During the summer of 1969 a series of pre-concentration tests were completed and a Wemco heavy media sink float plant was installed in late 1969 and early 1970. This pre-concentrator eliminates at least one third of the ore mined in the form of barren quartz dolomite prior to ore shipment by truck to the concentrator in Chibougamau."

"Pinchi Lake and Bralorne Takla mercury mines; Canada's only producing mercury mines during the past war (1939-1945); occur within the Pinchi Lake mercury belt. This belt is in central British Columbia; and is approximately 150 miles long extending from southeast of Fort St. James northwest to the headwaters of Omineca river.During the field season of 1937 cinnabar was discovered by J. G. Gray of the Geological Survey in Permian limestone on the north shore of Pinchi lake, where the main showings of the Pinchi Lake mercury mine were later developed. Following the publication of Gray's report claims were staked in the spring of 1938, and later that year were optioned to the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, and in June 1940 a reduction plant with a rated capacity of SO tons a day was brought into operation. In 1943 the plant had a capacity of more than 1,000 tons a day. The grade of ore treated was reported to average S to 10 pounds of mercury a ton, and production during the years 1940 to 1944 exceeded 4,000,000 pounds. The Bralorne Takla mercury mine, which is 90 miles northwest of the Pinchi Lake mercury mine, was brought into production in November 1943 with completion of a 50-ton mill. During the next 10 months more than 100,000 pounds of mercury were recovered, and the grade of the ore was reported to average 15 to 20 pounds of mercury a ton. During the war, production from these two properties was far in excess of Canadian requirements, and Canada was able to supply the United Kingdom and United States with part of their need.s. Both properties ceased operations during 1944, and, due to an excessive supply of mercury, have not yet reopened. The Pinchi Lake mercury belt lies along a northwest-trending major fault zone called the Pinchi fault zone (Fig. 1). This zone is approximately 150 miles long and varies in width from 200 to 1,000 feet . It forms the northeastern edge of a northwest trending fault belt up to 10 miles or more wide in places. In general the northeastern margin of the Pinchi fault zone represents the contact between closely folded, stratified Permian rock:s on the southwest and Mesozoic formations and Omineca intrusions on the northeast. It seems probable that the fault zone marks the site of major thrust faulting from the southwest and that the Permian rocks moved up with respect to the Mesozoic formations. Intense faulting occurs in the Permian rocks within the fault zone. There the more important faults trend north and northwest, dip steeply west and southwest, and may join a major low-angle thrust fault at depth."

A large magnesite-talc body is locared in Delora Township, 11 km sourh-southeasr of Timmins, Onrario. The deposit occurs in part of an Archean greensrone belt dominated by volcanic and sedimenrary rocks and large bodies of ultramafic intrusions. The magnesite-talc zane is abour 1800 m long, has a maximum width of 300 m and has been drilled ro 120 m below surface. Chemical analyses of rhe main carbonate zane average 20 ro 28% soluble MgO (magnesia), 5 ro 6% rota/ iron oxide and less rhan 0.1 % CaO (lime). Mineralogically, the zane consists of approximately 54% magnesite, 28% rate, /5% quartz and 3% hematire. Perrographic srudies suggest that rhe various assemblages of magnesite, rate, quartz and serpentine were derived from a parenr serpenrinire (after dunire). An early carbonitization stage, which produced a high-magnesite, low-talc assemblage, preceded a farer decarbonitizarion stage, which formed rhe main magnesite-talc assemblage. Despite a favourably low calcium oxide content of rhe magnesite-talc rock, considerable iron in the magnesire /at rice has limited the quality of the beneficiared product: rhe besr flotation concentrate to dare yields 92 to 94% dead-burned MgO. "Uranium, thorium and yttrium have been recovered, since the 1950s, from pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates occurring in the basal sediments of the Quirke syncline at Elliot Lake. Gold, an element of interest in similar type deposits occurring worldwide, is a very minor constituent of the Elliot Lake conglomerates because the provenance area of the sediments had few gold-bearing rocks.Uranium, thorium and rare elements are found in resistate and diagenetic minerals occurring in the matrix of the conglomerates. The valuable elements are recovered from the acid soluble minerals during the milling process.Large uranium reserves occur in mines found on both limbs of the Quirke syncline. Major reserves are being developed on the South Limb of the syncline, where the Stanleigh Mine, among four past-producers, has been reactivated.IntroductionUranium and thorium commonly occur in anomalous amounts in coarse basal sediments. Radioactivity in basal conglomeratic sediments is generally attributable to resistate minerals, that rarely occur in concentrations high enough to be of economic significance. One type of basal conglomerate found worldwide, in Precambrian cratonic basins, has uranium or uranium and gold concentrations large enough to be of economic interest. Principal among the occurrences are the pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerates of the Huronian in Canada, of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and at Jacobina in Brazil.The uranium and gold mineralization of these conglomerates was derived from provenance areas where both elements occurred and were later concentrated through source degradation and deposition in placers in a reducing environment. Only the Huronian conglomerates, generally much richer in uranium but with negligible gold, have been exploited solely for their uranium content.The uraniferous conglomerates of the Huronian at Elliot Lake, 500 km north of Toronto, continue to represent a major world source and supply of uranium concentrate."

"Two structures, a fracture zone and a shear zone, contained the two orebodies that yielded all the ore mined at the Gold Eagle mine. The orebodies are known as the Gold Eagle vein and the No. 1 shear zone. Both structures occur close to contacts between Timiskaming sediments, Algoman diorite, and later Algoman granite-granodiorite. The structures were produced by compressive forces from a south direction acting in the southern part of the McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock and in a cylindrically shaped inclusion of Timiskaming sediments.The mine, which exhausted its ore reserves and ceased operations in September of 1941, is on the east side of Mackenzie island, in the centre of Dome township in the Red Lake area.The Gold Eagle vein was located during the summer of 1933 by a surface exploration programme carried out under the direction of Alex Gillies. Sub-· sequent diamond drilling and underground exploration led to the installation of a mill, which came into production in October of 1937. The No. 1 shear zone was discovered and explored later from a drive on the 500-foot level. The mine produced a total of 40,204 oz. gold and 19,157 oz. silver from 223,628 tons of ore hoisted (180,095 tons milled) during its 4 years of mill operation.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe ore-bearing structures trend S.61°E. across Timiskaming greywacke, Algoman diorite, and later Algoman granite-granodiorite. The greywacke is a large, cylindrically shaped mass that is separated from the mai~ mass by the later intrusives. It is a massive, light-coloured, quartzose variety that has been recrystallized by the enclosing granite. The diorite and the granite-granodiorite are early and late components of the McKenzie-Gold Eagle stock. The diorite, which is a porphyritic rock containing large crystals of andesine-labradorite surrounded by hornblende, was injected early in the Algoman period. It was intruded and in large measure surrounded by the later granite-granodiorite. This rock varies from a granodiorite near the mine to a granite in the centre of the stock. All three intrusions are massive and homogeneous."

Both Eldorado Airlines •and Canadian Pacific Airlines maintain scheduled flights from Edmonton to the 4,000-foot airstrip on the north boundary of the Company property. Bi-weekly flights are made by Saskatchewan Government Airways from Prince Albert. Men and priority freight are flown by Company aircraft direct from Edmonton. From June to-September, when the waterways .are ice-free, freight is carried by barge from the •railhead at McMurray, Alberta, down the Athabasca river to Chipewyan, and across lake Athabasca to• Bushell, the terminal on Black bay, lake Athabasca, a total distance of 265 miles.The Eldorado Operation has been connected by a 12-mile, all-weather highway to Bushell. Where the highway crosses the park-land along the Fredette river, the townsite, Uranium, is under construction to provide services to the uranium-producing district. Spur roads have been built to the Ace, Fay, Eagle, •and Martin mines of the Eldorado operation, and to the properties of Pitch-Ore Uranium Mines, Ltd., and Rix Athabasca Uranium Mines, Ltd."

For various reasons, molten salts, mainly chlorides and fluorides, are used in the aluminum industry. In the holding and melting furnaces, these salts may have different roles such as protecting the metal from oxidation, reducing the metal content of the skim or removing inclusions or impurities from the metal bath. However, the use of these salts may also have some undesirable effects such as easy attack of the furnace lining refractory materials by molten aluminum. The aim of the present investigation was to clarify and to compare the effects of chloride versus fluoride salts, on the corrosion process of the aluminosilicate based refractory materials. A laboratory test and procedure, simulating the conditions at the metal line in the aluminum treatment furnaces, was used. Different aluminum alloys (A1-5wt.%Mg, A1-5.5wt.%Zn and 7075 alloy) and chloride or fluoride salts (MgC12, KC1, CaCl2, NaC1, MgF2, CaF2, NaF and cryolite) were used as well as several aluminosilicate materials. Thermogravimetric measurements were also carried out in order to analyze the effect of the salts on the oxidation of molten aluminum alloys. The experimental results showed that fluoride salts are more aggressive than chlorides against the tested refractory products. It is postulated that the fluorides prevent the formation of a protective oxide layer on the metal surface, favoring at the same time the corrosion of refractories. Moreover, it was found that the presence of Na in fluoride salts increases significantly the aggressiveness of the aluminum alloy towards the refractory samples.

Supported gold catalysts were prepared by Direct Anionic Exchange on an alumina support and tested during the reaction of CO oxidation and of saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons (C1 to C3). The catalysts showed high activies over a range of concentrations and temperatures compatible with an application to automotive exhaust cleaning. Furthermore, a complete resistance to thermal ageing at 600°C in the absence or presence of water was observed due to the obtention of strongly anchored nanosized gold particles during the preparation step.

Cambior has been involved in the Guiana Shield since 1990, first in Guyana and then in Suriname starting in 1994. This paper presents the history of Omai Gold Mines Limited in Guyana, where commercial production started in 1993 after an investment of US $150 million. In 1995, the mine was expanded in order to increase the milling capacity to 21,000 tonnes per day. After ten years of production, approximately 3 million ounces of gold have been produced. Building on this experience, Cambior became involved in Suriname with the Rosebel Project. A US $95 million pre-production program started in the fourth quarter of 2002, and the mine should be in commercial production early in 2004.

Though the Canadian gold industry mined more gold than they discovered in the period, when undeveloped deposits are taken into account, the deficit was merely 12 million ounces. ?? The Canadian gold mining industry would be sustainable in the foreseeable future, particularly, given the overwhelming predicted promising gold market in the mid/long run.

The Penna Shaft is the deepest single?lift shaft in North America. AGNICO-EAGLE started sinking the Penna shaft in 1995 with a hoisting plant capable of hoisting 1 800 tonnes per day from a 2 240-metre deep shaft. Exploration success at depth lead to the replacement of the existing double drum hoist by another double drum hoist capable of hoisting 7 000 tonnes per day. The use of another double drum hoist, instead of a Blair Multi-Rope winder, to hoist 24,5-tonne skips was only made possible by lowering the safety factor. This paper describes recent experiences at Penna and in South Africa, and examines the possibility of extending the double drum hoisting system to a depth of three kilometres.
