"The above committee sent out a questionnaire to the gold mines for the purpose of learning what units and methods are currently in use in the mines as the first step in an attempt to agree on standard units to be used in any papers or reports that may be given to other mines or presented at meetings. The next step is to try to arrive at acceptable standard units for reporting and methods of making tests. It was suggested by Mr. J. Jardine of Eldorado Mining and Refining that the use of the metric system should be seriously considered. It was also brought out that there was no intention of having any mine change their methods to the standard for internal reporting as this would involve too much change. However for external reporting there shouldn't be too much difficulty in converting to the accepted standard units.On the following pages are the reports of those mines that replied to the questionnaire.MALARTIC GOLD FIELDS LIMITEDP.A. "The Mining concessions of Quemont Mining Corporation, Limited, are located at 48°16'N latitude, 79°00'W longitude, in Rouyn township, northwestern Quebec. Six hundred and forty acres in area, they lie directly north of, and contiguous to, the Horne mine of Noranda Mines Limited. The north arm of Osisko Lake covers a large area of the southern part of the property. The orebodies lie below the Jake with one body extending through to the bedrock surface.The property was staked in 1922, and was originally known as the Murray Claims. The group attracted interest from numerous exploration companies because of the proximity of the Noranda orebodies.The United Verde Extension Company, of Arizona, optioned the claims in 1926. They sank a shaft to a depth of 235 feet, at a short distance from the Noranda boundary. From a level established at a depth of 215 feet they completed 3000 feet of exploratory driving from which 6000 feet of diamond drilling was done. Only a small body of siliceous gold ore was found before they dropped their ·option.In 1928, The Mining Corporation of Canada purchased a 90 per cent interest in the property. An operating company, later named Quemont Mining Corporation, was formed. An electrical survey was carried out on a portion of the property, followed by deepening of the shaft to 922 feet. Levels were established at 500 and 900 feet, and 4,800 feet of driving and more than 3000 feet of diamond drilling were carried out from them.Geological knowledge at that time recognized that a major break, the Horne Creek fault, lay not far inside the south boundary. Striking north 80 degrees east, the fault dipped south at 85 degrees. The rock on the north side of the fault was massive rhyolite; to the south, meta-diabase and a little rhyolite. A left-handed movement was indicated by a 600-foot offset on a north striking diabase dyke. The small body of siliceous gold ore, referred to previously, was confined to the 215 level."

The results presented in this paper show that the gold solution dilution is a key parameter to control the dispersion of gold on ?-Al2O3 the selected support. The variation of concentration leads to changes in pH which modify the nature of gold complexes from HAuCl4 formed in the solution. These complexes are presented. Some of them (AuCl3(OH)- and AuCl2(OH)2 -) react with the surface of alumina and give interesting interaction. AuCl2(OH)2 complex has been considered as an ideal complex because of the strong anchorage of a bidentate species on the alumina. This complex is formed mainly in a solution of gold with a concentration of 10-4 M giving a pH of 3.5-4.5. The nature of the anchorage and the amount of chlorine, has an influence upon the formation of Au-Cl bridges which modify the dispersion of the gold on alumina of the final catalyst as shown by TEM.

A number of different process routes are available for recovery of hydrochloric acid from chloride solutions. The objective of this paper is to discuss various recovery routes and analyze the impact of several input variables on the variable operating cost.

Direct smelting of copper concentrate to blister copper has the advantages of energy saving and environmental protection. There has been a lot of effort invested in process development including test work and theoretic analysis in the past half century. However, the process has only been applied commercially to a few smelters that treat chalcocite types of copper concentrate. The main limitation to treating chalcopyrite types of copper concentrate is high copper content in smelting slag and low direct copper recovery. Thus intensive slag cleaning is needed. In this paper, the thermodynamic analysis was mainly carried out for the multiphase equilibrium of direct to blister copper smelting for both chalcopyrite and chalcocite concentrates. The practical problems in direct to blister copper smelting, which are mainly in copper content in slag, are clarified. The operational window of slag composition for different temperatures and oxygen partial pressure for the treatment of chalcocite type concentrates is identified. The process operation optimization for the blending of chalcocite, pyrite and chalcopyrite concentrates was done. INTRODUCTION The extractive metallurgy of copper can be divided into two broad groups of processes, namely, pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, and the former is dominant. About 80% of copper in the world is produced by pyrometallurgy (Christopher et al., 2006). The first stage of conventional copper pyrometallurgy processing is to smelt copper concentrate to copper matte composed of FeS and Cu2S with slagging to remove a proportion of the iron (Gargul, Boryczko, & Bukowska, 2017). The smelting processes include bath and flash smelting. The second stage of the process is to convert copper matte to blister copper. In most cases, the copper matte is converted in Peirce Smith (P-S) converters, which are batch operations (Kubiszewski, 2015). The P-S converting can be divided into two periods, slagging and copper blowing. During slagging period, FeS in copper matte is oxidized to FeO, which reacts with silica flux forming slag. When the iron content in matte is less than 1%, copper begins to oxidize and reduce to form blister copper (Kucharski, Sak, Madej, Wędrychowicz, & Mróz, 2013).

The conducting of risk reviews is an essential activity in ensuring safe operating conditions, both during project design phases and for existing facilities. The following paper presents a structured approach to the conducting of risk reviews for existing operations, including descriptions of supporting documentation and guidelines for on-site review activities. The conducting of regular site risk reviews and safety audits is crucial in ensuring the continued safe operation of existing facilities, particularly in the copper industry where numerous processes and unit operations can present catastrophic risks, both in terms of loss of life and financial liability. The structured approach presented aims to provide a logical and comprehensive analysis of risks to align safety-related facilities and procedures with current industry best practice and ensure consistency across multiple client operations. INTRODUCTION The production of copper, whether by pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical process routes, carries significant inherent safety risks. Production volumes are relatively large, often requiring complex processing routes, multiple production trains and a variety of supporting ancillary facilities. Furthermore, considering the relatively large size of ore reserves, copper production plants can have operational lives well beyond the typical design duration of 20 years. In this context, the conducting of regular risk reviews is essential in ensuring safe operating conditions and aligning facilities with current industry best practices. Risk reviews and safety audits can take various forms and have various areas of focus. The methodologies and approaches described below relate specifically to catastrophic risks, defined broadly as risks that carry the potential for multiple fatalities and significant financial losses. Focus is given to existing facilities and does not consider the risk-related activities such as hazard and operability (HAZOP) studies conducted during plant design. The structured approach presented aims to provide a guide for effective site- based audits and a logical analysis of risks identified. RISK CLASSIFICATION Table 1 provides a typical summary of the classification of risk types and the associated consequence categories and descriptions. It illustrates the descriptions of a catastrophic risk in terms of the broad categories of Health & Safety, Environment, Financial, Image & Reputation and Legal & Compliance. In terms of the Financial category, numeric costs ranges are often prescribed depending on the financial characteristics of the specific operation and the associated parent company.

Size by size recoveries and pentlandite liberation data from image analysis were used to evaluate plant tests of pentlandite flotation and pentlandite/pyrrhotite middlings flotation from pyrrhotite in a circuit treating low grade magnetic intermediates at the Strathcona Mill. Raising the pH with lime gave improved selectivity for liberated pentlandite but there were major losses of middlings unless the circuit was pulled hard indicating the need for finer regrinding. However, size by size recoveries at the normal regrind showed that, while the pentlandite recovery improved in the finer ranges, the pyrrhotite recovery also increased leading to little selectivity in any size range. A much finer regrind gave greatly improved selectivity in all size classes suggesting that 'surface polishing' as well as liberation effects were being seen. Using liberation data from image analysis of the products, surface polishing accounted for over 99 % of the improvement in selectivity. Unreasonable recoveries of more highly liberated particles were observed for liberation analysis by volume fraction but showed the expected trend in recovery when the analysis was based on surface liberation. The surface liberation data showed that the improved pentlandite recoveries after finer regrinding were to more than 90 % caused by improved liberation with the remainder contributed by surface polishing effects. The practical implications of this work are that i) the comparison of particle grades with product grades allows to estimate the effect of regrinding on co-flotation/entrainment, ii) surface liberation models should be used for evaluating recoverabilities by flotation and iii) regrind circuits may be set up to ensure that all particles go through the mill or that only the coarse fraction is reground depending on the surface scrubbing found to be required.

Copper smelting furnaces are typically lined with magnesia-chromite refractories, which are exposed to multiple and complex stresses. The selection of the processing route, furnace type and slag system will be dictated by the specific ore type available, this will determine the individual refractory wear. This paper evaluates the common refractory wear mechanisms as observed in the copper Peirce-Smith converter and in the copper anode furnace. The chemical factors include corrosion caused by fayalite type slag and sulfur supply, as well as, by Cu-oxide attack. Changes in the temperature during the furnace operation (thermal-shock) create stresses in the brick lining which can only be absorbed in limited extent. Mechanical factors include erosion, caused primarily by the movement of the metal bath, slag and charging material, as well as, stresses in the brickwork due to punching. Finally improper lining procedures can also effect the service life. All these wear parameters lead to severe degeneration of the brick microstructure and a decreased lining life. Therefore, a detailed investigation and understanding of the wear mechanisms through “post mortem studies” together with thermochemical calculations by FactSageTM software is an important prerequisite for the refractory producer. Based on these research results, combined with specific process knowledge, appropriate brick lining solutions for copper processing furnaces can be recommended. INTRODUCTION The refining of copper includes converting of matte or black copper into blister copper for final fire refining process in the anode section. Typically Peirce-Smith (PS) converters are in use. Other technologies include Hoboken Converter, TBRC but also Flash Converting Furnace and bath smelting furnaces (ISA, Ausmelt) (Davenport et al., 2002). For fire refining two types of furnaces are used – the rotary furnace type is dominantly used in the primary production route while secondary smelters tend to use hearth refining furnaces which are more suitable for scrap melting. Installed working linings are based on magnesia-chromite bricks but especially in the anode refining section the application of alumina-chromia bricks have become more popular in the recent years. It comes without saying that, to some extent, large variations in the slag composition can be observed from the data provided to RHI Magnesita during post-mortem studies of used refractory samples and this needs to be addressed properly during the selection process of refractory linings.77

The present study aims at recovering rare earth elements (REE) in conjunction with the production of fertilizers from an apatite concentrate. Apatite is one of the REE rich minerals ending up in the tailings pond when Luossarvaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) in Sweden processes Malmberget’s iron ore deposit. Leaching with nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, and sulphuric acid respectively have been studied. The nitric acid route was chosen for further investigations and the optimum acid concentration for leaching of the REE were determined. The leached REE are recovered by solvent extraction using di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and 2-ethylhexylphosphonic acid-mono-2-ethylhexyl ester (EHEHPA).

The main controlling factors of the mining-induced deformation and failure of surface borehole were researched with this failure model and the limit analysis method. The mining methods and geology conditions mechanics action mechanism to surface borehole and its time ?space evaluation rule was found. The surface borehole deformation and fracture rule were advanced. It provides theoretical support to optimizing layout, structure type, security measure and local casing protection of surface borehole.

"With growing international interest in mineral resources in Central Africa, the importance of transparency in resource development cannot be overemphasized. Without transparency, the region cannot maximize revenues from resources. Although the importance of transparency is beginning to be recognized, many factors can hold back the gains of transparency from resulting in real economic development for the countries involved. This paper reviews current financial, economic, and development literature for Central African countries, with a focus on identifying underlying conditions and specific transactional conditions impacting the effectiveness of transparency in mining development in the region.RÉSUMÉ En raison de l’intérêt international croissant pour les ressources minérales en Afrique centrale, l’importance de la transparence dans le développement des ressources ne peut pas être surestimée. Sans transparence, la région ne peut pas maximiser les revenus tirés de ses ressources. "The sillimanite group minerals, kyanite, sillimanite and andalusite are identified as alumino-silicate minerals with the common chemical composition AIP3.Si02' so that each possesses similar physical properties. Kyanite is the most abundant mineral and mainly occurs in Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia; sillimanite occurs in Ontario and Manitoba; and andalusite in Nova Scotia. The main use for the sillimanite-group minerals is in refractory applications for the production of refractory bricks and shapes. In refractory applications, the main performance criterion is the relative percentage of mullite formed within the material during firing. This phase gives a greater degree of resistance to creep deformation and slag attack, and improves the ability of the refractory to withstand high temperatures under load. The beneficiation of refractory silicate minerals has been the subject of many investigations at CANMET, and the former Mines Branch. Eighteen kyanite, two sillimanite, and three andalusite evaluation studies were conducted between 1933 and 1987. A review of some of the more important studies is presented, which includes information concerning mineralogy, beneficiation methods and flotation data."

Detailed as-built project schedules are necessary to close out construction projects, benchmarking, forecasting, dispute resolution, and improving cost estimates of future projects. Manual procedures for developments of as-built documentation is time consuming, involves numerous interfaces and human interventions. This paper presents computational framework that encompasses automated site data acquisition and generates schedule updates utilizing commercially available project scheduling software. The work is carried out collaboratively with a Hydro Quebec team. The site data is captured employing mobile computing using iPad® type computers and Wi-Fi. The information is directly compiled in a centralized database server. The synchronization tool is a bi-directional application and is used on servers to communicate with iPad® computers deployed onsite. The captured data is stored in Microsoft SQL® relation database that consists of 63 entities. Computer software application has been developed in Microsoft Visual Basic® (vb.net) environment for extracting the collected site data, linking the database to the as planned schedule, and generating the actual, also known as as-built schedule. The development can be utilized in automated progress reporting, evaluating future bids, generating master schedules and a wide range of efficient EVM applications.

"The objective in the mineral processing of primary ores is to liberate and effectively recover each individual economically viable diamond with minimal reduction in its potential value.There are three distinctive phases in diamond processing:Feed PreparationWhere the diamonds are liberated and waste material finer than the economically selected cut-off size is rejected. In this section we will discuss the various techniques utilised worldwide to effect feed preparation.Primary ProcessingWhere the diamonds are recovered into a high grade concentrate suitable for the more expensive and selective final recovery process. In this section we will discuss the development of primary processing from jigs and pans to the more current techniques utilised worldwide.Final RecoveryWhere there is selective rejection of waste particles until only diamonds remain. The diamonds may then be acidised prior to packing and marketing.Within these distinct phases a variety of unit processes have been utilised and this paper will discuss their relative merits, limitations and suitability in respect to the various stages of diamond project development from prospecting through to production.Basic capital and operating costs are compared for the autogenous milling route developed in the CIS and the crushing and scrubbing route utilised in the west."
