The commercial carbonate industry of Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, began about eighty years ago with the opening of the Sydney steel plant. Significant carbonate deposits are confined to the Precambrian George River Grav" and the Mississippian Windsor Group. George River Group carbonates are thought to have formed as part of a stable platformal sequence. They are crystalline and lie within a dominantly quartzitic sequence. Of the four major sites for George River carbonates on the island, the most commercially promising are the dolomite at Kelly Cove and the limestone and dolomite at Glencoe. Kelly Cove dolomite has good potential for metallurgical, agricultural and fettling purposes; reserves approach 13.6 million tonnes. Windsor Group carbonates were deposited as marine sediments in basins formed by pre-Carboniferous fault blocks. Windsor dolomite reserves at Stoney Creek are only fractionally retrievable and hence are of little economic value. The Windsor Group's Irish Cove limestone has been quarried on a large scale since 1964; no undeveloped commercial deposits, however, remain in the group.

"Pure aluminum (Al) matrix composites with changing the volume fraction of TiB2 particle content from 10 to 30% was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process. Then the microstructure, density, dispersibility and thermal conductivity of the composites was estimated. As increasing TiB2 content, the dispersibility of particles and the density of the composites degraded slightly. And, the effect of the dispersibility of TiB2 particles on the thermal conductivity was quite little. The thermal conductivity of the composites was less than the theoretical value calculated by Maxwell-Eucken equation considering the effect of the density. It is due the influence of the interface heat transfer rate, because these composites have many small sized particles and have high interface density.INTRODUCTION Recently, metal matrix composites (MMCs) have been used widely in electric / electronic components, architectural materials, transportation equipment, aerospace and a precision instruments, because it’s superior properties have been greatly watched. Demand of MMC for industrial use has been increasing gradually. Furthermore, multifunction properties are required for the composites strongly. By integrating the dissimilar materials, the composites have various properties that we cannot get from monolithic materials. On the other hand, the response to the thermal management is required for materials, recently, and the need for the structural material controlling the thermal conductivity has been increasing. Especially, superior thermal conductivity and good mechanical properties from room temperature to high temperature are required for heat sink and heat exchanger at the same time. In late years, a study on the composites combining carbon materials and aluminum and copper has been developing, and actually the composites with high thermal conductivity which is not provided in the conventional materials is developed. On the other hand, non-oxide ceramics particles such as SiC and AlN, TiB2 have good thermal conductivity. Particularly, as TiB2 has good electrical conductivity, TiB2 containing MMCs is expected as innovative materials used as electric/ electronic components. Furthermore, as TiB2 has low density, high melting point, low thermal expansion and good deformation resistance, the development of high performance composites with multi-functional properties is expected. As thermal conductivity of pure Al and TiB2 are 225 and 66.4 W/mK, respectively, it is expected that the degradation of thermal conductivity by adding dispersant in Al matrix is suppressed. The authors have carried out a thermal conductivity, electrical conductivity, mechanical properties of 20 vol.% TiB2 dispersed Al composites (Sugio, 2016, Sasaki, 2016). In this study, the influence of quantity of addition of TiB2 on microstructure, thermal conductivity was studied minutely."

During the geological synthesis of the Réservoir Pipmuacan area (NTS 22E) by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles (Québec), several ilmenite-apatite occurrences, some well-known and some recently discovered, have been examined. These occurrences are hosted in the Lac-Saint-Jean and Labrieville AMCG anorthositic suites. The Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite (1160-1140 Ma), composed of multiple intrusions covering an extensive surface area, is characterized by labradorite plagioclase. The Labrieville Anorthositic Suite (1010-1008 Ma) is characterized by andesine plagioclase. It was previously known as the Labrieville Anorthosite, which was composed of a small isolated pluton located east of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. However, new geochronological data and field observations indicate that the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite in fact includes several intrusive bodies, namely the La Hache Monzonite and the Mattawa Anorthosite. A series of major structures (Saint-Fulgence, Pipmuacan, and Chute-des-Passes deformation zones) and their conjugate faults played an important role in the emplacement of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite. The Saint-Fulgence deformation zone appears to have been involved in the emplacement of the Labrieville Anorthositic Suite. Oxide mineralizations are abundant in both anorthositic suites. Ilmenite, magnetite (± titaniferous), and apatite assemblages are found mostly in the labradorite-type anorthosites, while hemo-ilmenite, magnetite and apatite assemblages are associated only with the andesine-type anorthosites. Field works has revealed ilmenite-apatite mineralizations in a variety of settings, with grades reaching 48% TiO2, 16.2% P2O5, and 71.7% Fe2O3 (tot). Numerous oxide-bearing gabbronorites, often accompanied by or located near massive apatite-oxide accumulations (nelsonites), were discovered. Among these oxide-rich zones, breccia zones with anorthosite enclaves in an oxide matrix (ilmenite-magnetiteapatite) have been observed. Locally, ilmenite-apatite mineralization occurs as cumulate concentrations in ultramafic rocks. Evidence has been observed for immiscible magmas, for magmas differentiated from a mangerite or jotunite parent, and even for late magmas differentiated from the anorthosite magma itself (apatite-bearing anorthosite). Finally, the northern part of the Lac-Saint-Jean Anorthositic Suite hosts sulfide and vanadium mineralizations associated with ilmenite-apatite enriched zones, with grades reaching 1.48% Cu, 1.22% Ni, 1.6% Cr2O5, 0.25% Co, and 0.52% V2O5.

"Since World War II, urban communities have expanded at an unprecedented rate. The industrial mineral industry supplies the sand, grave], limestone, crushed rock, cement, gyp-sum, etc. for urbanization. Most de-posits in use are close to or within communities. Pollution of water and air has become a matter of public concern. Waste disposal and the effects of noise and vibration are subjects of public debate. Need for the reclamation of land after operations such as strip mining is discussed in magazine articles and on TV pro-grams; i.e., the general public is educated in the unattractive features of mining.Legislation is on the books and being drafted to regulate mining operations and their side effects. To avoid over-regulation and restrictive legislation, it is necessary that the public be educated and legislators informed of problems peculiar to the mining industry. Our side of the story needs publicity."

In 1967, BACM Industries Limited started producing walboard at Saskatchewan's first gypsum products plant, located in Saskatoon, using, as a basic raw material, gyp-sum rock supplied from the company's mine near Amaranth, Manitoba. This paper describes the geology of the Amaranth gypsum deposit, the method of mining the rock and the manufacturing facilities used to produce wall-board.

Copper powder generated during the treatment of electro-metallurgical bleeds by reactive electro- dialysis (RED) had totally reduced the content of ferric ions in acidic synthetic electrolytes (Cu (II)- Fe (III) – H2SO4). In batch and columnar experiments 100% of the ferric ions were reduced to ferrous ions with an extremely high kinetics. A preliminary conceptual design for reducing ferric ions based on an integrate RED- Column for treatment of electro-winning bleed system is discussed. This system is able to recover simultaneously sulfuric acid and copper powder, which will reduce ferric ions. INTRODUCTION It is well known the negative effect of ferric ions in the copper electro-winning process. The increase of ferric content in the electrolyte reduces the current efficiency, i.e., there is an increase in the energy consumption, and changes the surface morphology of the copper deposit (Das, Gopala & Krishna, 1996; Vargas & Parra, 2013). The increase of the specific energy consumption due to the loss of current efficiency occurs by the reduction reaction of ferric to ferrous ions in the cathode, at the anode the ferrous ions are slowly oxidized to ferric ions (Shaw, Dreisinger, Lancaster, Richmond & Tomlinson, 2004). To control the level of iron in the electrolyte, bleeds are needed; this bleed electrolyte containing copper, sulfuric acid, cobalt, iron and other impurities normally is waster, which increased the production cost of the plant (Milbourne, 2002; Mckevitt & Dreisinger, 2009). Then, permanent efforts oriented to treat those bleeds to avoid losses of valuables components are made; among them are use ion exchange resins (Shaw et al., 2004; Mackevitt et al., 2009), chemical precipitation (Izadi, Mohebbi, Amiri & Izadi, 2017) and electrodialysis (Cortés, Ipinza & Ibáñez, 2013). The last one allows to the simultaneous recovery of sulfuric acid and copper powder. If one of the valuables obtained by treating the bleed can be used to reduce ferric ion concentration in the electrolyte could be an important asset. This issue at laboratory scale is reported in this work, the use of copper powder, generated by reactive electro-dialysis when treating synthetic acidic electro-metallurgical bleeds, for reducing ferric ions in acidic electrolytes.

Many miners are exposed to dangerously high levels of noise on a daily basis. Over the past 15 years, a continually increasing number of occupational hearing loss has been reported from the mining community in the United States, of which, more than 95% is attributed to prolonged noise exposure. Although the noise exposure levels may differ between coal miners and metal and non-metal miners, in the absence of noise control at the source, the solution is the same: use of personal hearing protection devices (HPD). While protecting the miners? hearing it is also essential to no longer hinder their ability to communicate. With access to an advanced HPD that is customized to the miners? ears we are able to combine these two requirements. Using an intra-aural instantly custom molded HPD miners are protected from high levels of noise. The HPD is equipped with wireless capabilities, and contains both a speaker and an In-Ear Microphone (IEM). Therefore, the miners? speech may be captured from inside the ear and transmitted to the remote listener. This IEM signal is relatively noise-free since it is isolated from the background noise. The IEM speech signal, however, is ?boomy? and is missing some high frequency content, making fricative consonants hard to understand. Nonetheless, the IEM speech signal is correlated with the natural speech signal and may be manipulated through statistical techniques to more closely resemble natural speech. By improving the intelligibility and quality of the IEM signal, numerous applications may be enabled. One use of the enhanced IEM signal will be for radio communication. Using wireless radio communication in a noisy mining environment is sometimes the only practical and affordable solution to allow communication between miners equipped with personal hearing protection devices. Traditionally, one of the weaknesses of such wireless radio communication lies in the lack of designating receivers: whether they are the intended receiver or not, all those carrying a radio receiver are subjected to the broadcasted signal. The current work will detail a new concept of a "radio-acoustical virtual environment" where the radio signal will only be received by miners within a given spatial range, such range depending on the user?s vocal effort as well as the ambient and perceived background noise levels.

As a result of my field examinations in this Province, I have been struck by the evidence of widespread mineralization in rocks, particularly the limestones of Carboniferous age. Six prospects of lead and zinc or lead alone scattered through the eastern part of the mainland, one copper prospect and three veins of siderite, all point to a period of mineralization subsequent to the forming of the Carboniferous rocks in which they occur. While none of the present prospects are of proved economic importance, still it is possible, and indeed probable, that further prospecting will find concentrations sufficiently large to make mines. It may possibly aid the prospecting for these base metals if the present scraps of information are assembled from various sources, and I will further briefly recount the information as a result of my observations. Gay?s River At Gay's river, midway between Halifax and Truro, and four miles east of the railway, numerous pits and natural exposures show galena and sphalerite in limestone of Carboniferous age, near where it lies unconformably upon slate and quartzite of the gold series. These exposures extend for a length of over one thousand feet along a curving contact. The pits show that on the contact there is a fossiliferous and somewhat porous layer of limestone, which is so impregnated with galena and small amounts of sphalerite as to be of ore grade. Wherever observed, the thickness of this layer is less than two feet.

One of the several important problems that had to be solved at that time was the rapid and precise determination of uranium in ores and concentrates.GeneralThe chemical analysis of uranium ores is a long and difficult business and is complicated by the presence in most ores of a large number of interfering elements. True, much progress has been made, during the past few years, toward simplification of the analytical methods, but the chemical determination still remains the job of a skilled operator. For this reason, the chemical method has been replaced, whenever possible, by a physical determination based on the measurement of the radiations emitted by the elements of the uranium family. There are several types of instruments suitable for these measurements, but of all the radiation detectors known to the physicist, such as ionization chambers, crystal detectors, scintillation, proportional counters, and the like, the Geiger-Mueller counters have proved to be the most satisfactory for routine determinations, because of their simplicity.The Geiger-Mueller counter is a very versatile instrument; it can be constructed to detect any type of radiation, corpuscular -0r electromagnetic. Here, however, we are interested in these counters because of their ability to detect the beta and the gamma radiations, both emitted by some members of the uranium family. The beta radiation is corpuscular, and is composed of fast electrons, while the gamma radiation is electromagnetic."

"MAGNETITE HAS BEEN found in many .parts of the coastal area of British Columbia, but the more important deposits are on Vancouver Island and Texada Island. The locations of these deposits are shown on Figure 1.Interest in the magnetite deposits dates back to the 1870s, when land was acquired on the southwest coast of Texada Island by the Puget Sound Iron Company. This ground included the Prescott, Paxton, and Lake deposits. During the years 1885 to 1903, and 1908, 28,898 tons of magnetite ore was shipped to the company's blast-furnace plant at Irondale, Washington, U.S.A. This production was almost entirely from the Prescott open-pits.In the years following the Texada Island discoveries, other magnetite deposits were found in the coastal area, and various plans were proposed to utilize the local ores in the establishment of a steel industry in the Pacific Northwest. None was carried to fruition but, in 1951, open-pit mining was begun at Iron Hill, Vancouver Island, to furnish iron concentrates for steel mills in Japan. The use of polymer-surfactant mixtures as foam stabilization agents is a topic that has drawn the attention of several fields but has so far not be thoroughly studied in the context of mineral froth flotation. The present work showcases a study on the impact on flotation performance of cellulose surfactant derivatives and their mixtures with commercial frothers. Bubble size and foam property measurements were run in a two-phase system along with laboratory-scale flotation experiments conducted using a porphyry copper ore from a mine in Finland. A comparative analysis on recovery, grade and flotation kinetics is presented on the products obtained using: i) a partially hydroxylated cellulose derivative (i.e. hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose; HPMC), ii) a commercial polyglycol-ester frother (Nasfroth240; NF240), and iii) mixtures of these two. The results show that using frothers with a total concentration of 30 ppm, the HPMC-NF240 mixtures provide advantages in terms of Cu recovery, (i.e., up to 95%), compared to the use of either NF240 (ca. 76%) or HPMC alone (ca. 1%). Interestingly, only a small proportion of HPMC mixed with NF240 was sufficient to produce a measurable increase in recovery. This improved performance was attributed to a synergistic effect of the polymer-surfactant mixture which further reduced the bubble sizes in a two-phase system compared to that of NF240. The present work offers a further step into understanding the phenomena taking place when a short chained surfactant is either substituted or mixed with a cellulose derivative, offering potential ways of exploiting this behavior for the enrichment of minerals. INTRODUCTION Froth flotation has been the predominant technology used to beneficiate sulfidic copper minerals such as chalcopyrite ever since it was invented in the late 19th century. The reason for the domination of flotation technology lies behind its versatility in selective separation as well as relatively cheap operational costs (Wills & Finch 2015). Even though flotation of sulfidic copper minerals is moderately well understood based on the broad research work done around the subject (e.g., Albijanic et al., 2015, Bournival et al., 2017, Wang et al., 2015, Mikhlin et al., 2015, to cite only a few), the modern era presents new challenges to the primary raw material industry, including questions regarding sustainability of mining operations accompanied by a need to improve the process efficiencies due to declining ore grades (Edraki et al., 2014).

The role of the interfacial electrical 'Condition on the adsorption of col-lectors on mineral surfaces has been studied by electrophoretic mobility and adsorption measurements made on zircon. From the investigation of the electrokinetic properties of zircon, H+ and OH-are seen to act as potential determining ions, thus controlling the electrical nature of this mineral. The isoelectric point of zircon occurs at a pH of approximately 5.0, and it is evident, therefore, that the zircon surface would be positively charged below a pH of 5.0 and negatively charged above this pH. The adsorption of collectors therefore de-pends strongly on the pH of the solution; anionic collectors are adsorbed on positively charged surfaces and cationic collectors on negatively charged surfaces. This, in turn, de-fines the effective flotation condition, with respective collectors, for this mineral. The above results have been correlated with the flotation behaviour obtained by the simplified flotation test using a modified Hallimond tube.

"Equipment selection is a key decision in mine planning. Equipment size affects decisions from pit size to the total operation cost. Particularly when replacing haulage fleets for long-life surface mining operations, mining operations focus solely on haulage productivity. Road width and specifically ramp width are significantly affected by an increase in hauler size in terms of overall strip ratio through required highwall set-backs or sterilizing of lower ore access due to required overlying ramp fill structures. In addition, in light of ever increasing regulatory and reporting emissions requirements, bigger equipment may not translate into lower emissions per tonne moved. This study analyzes hauler-scale impacts on aspects not currently incorporated into conventional mine planning, including expansion of roads to accommodate larger equipment, road layer thickness variation depending on hauler size, and fuel consumption and emissions. Results indicate that such relationships have a large impact on cost. Therefore, an expanded consideration of the capacities of increasing equipment size in mine planning is highly recommended. ¦ KEYWORDS Equipment selection, Grade resistance (GR), Haul road, Haul truck, Mine planning, Payload, Rolling resistance (RR), Total resistance (TR) RÉSUMÉ La sélection du matériel est une décision importante dans l’aménagement des mines. La taille de l’équipement a une incidence sur la prise de décisions, depuis la taille de la fosse jusqu’aux coûts totaux des activités. L’exploitation minière se concentre uniquement sur la productivité des moyens de transport, particulièrement lorsqu’il s’agit de remplacer les parcs de camions de transport dans les exploitations à ciel ouvert à longue durée de vie. La largeur des routes, et spécifiquement la largeur des descenderies sont considérablement affectées par une augmentation de la taille des camions de transport en termes du coefficient global de recouvrement qui dépend de la taille requise des parois (si les descenderies sont agrandies, les parois devront être creusées de haut en bas afin d’agrandir la taille du fond de la fosse). Il faut aussi pouvoir procéder à l’excavation des gradins les plus profonds de la mine et ainsi préserver l’accès à cette zone, ce qui pourrait devenir difficile si la quantité de stériles utilisés pour la structure des descenderies augmente et s’ils occupent une trop grande partie du fond de la fosse. En outre, au vu des exigences de plus en plus strictes en matière de réglementation et de déclaration des émissions, un équipement plus volumineux ne sera pas nécessairement synonyme d’une réduction des émissions par tonne déplacée. Cette étude analyse l’incidence de la taille des camions de transport sur des aspects actuellement non intégrés dans l’aménagement classique des mines, notamment la création de routes permettant le passage d’un équipement plus volumineux, la variation de l’épaisseur de la couche d’asphalte des routes en fonction de la taille des camions de transport, ainsi que la consommation de carburant et les émissions. Les résultats indiquent que ces relations ont des répercussions importantes sur les coûts. Currently, ores with high-grades of copper oxides and secondary sulfides have become increasingly scarce, which has encouraged industry to look for alternative raw materials to obtain copper. The problem is that primary sulfides are difficult to dissolve at near ambient conditions. Proposed hydrometallurgical processes have not been implemented beyond a pilot or demonstration scale. One of the principal disadvantages is that the majority of these processes are not viable with ores that contain less than 4% copper. One of the more recently proposed techniques involves the use of organic solvents in the dissolution of copper concentrates with a chalcopyrite content of between 20 and 30%, which has shown high efficiency. The present research explores the ability of this process to leach copper from low grade chalcopyritic ores (<4% Cu) at different temperatures ranging from 20 to 50°C. It was found that depending on the temperature, high percentages of copper were extracted in 40 to 100 minutes, using different oxidants. Additionally, distinct leaching behavior was observed with each oxidizing agent. In some cases, the extraction kinetics adjusted to the diffusion controlled shrinking core model.

"The Chibougamau Explorers property comprises 35 claims or 1,726 acres in La Dauversiere and Rohault Townships along the west shore of Norhart Lake. The property is serviced by a twelve-mile all-weather high-way leaving the main St. Felicien-Chibougamau highway at mileage 121. This road junction will be a railway siding on the C.N.R. St. Felicien-Chibougamau branch line in early 1957. The property lies 30 miles due south from the town of Chibougamau. The mine-sponsored Chibougamau Explorers town has a population of 250 with 28 residences and a well equipped recreation centre.The original showing was found by Rider Storn, a prospector financed by Val d'Or interests during the 1950 field season. This showing did not stand up to detailed prospecting but it did lead to the discovery of the main zone by A. Oakley during the following winter.The company was incorporated in I 950 under the presidency of E. Ayrhart. Financing following the initial drilling involved an increase of capitalization from 3 to 5 million shares and the advent of financing and management control by Anacon Lead Mines Limited.Exploration and development to Jan. I, 1956, has included 42,331 feet of surface diamond drilling; 31,363 feet of underground drilling; a 3-compartment shaft to 1,245 feet, with 8 levels at 150-foot intervals; and I 1,054 feet of drifts, crosscuts, and raises. Ore reserves to the 900-foot level, proven and partly developed, total 546,725 tons averaging 0·30 ounces gold and 0·93 per cent copper. A mill with capacity of 500 to 750 tons will be installed by January 1956.GeologyThe Chibougamau Explorers property lies along the belt of Keewatin volcanics striking through Bachelor Lake, Opawica Lake, Doda Lake, Coapatina, Norhart Lake, and Rohault Lake, where it is in close proximity to the paragneisses of the Grenville series. The boundary of the paragneisses, a gradational contact, lies within a mile of the Chibougamau Explorers shaft collar."

"This paper discusses the hazards and extensive precautions taken in Canadian uranium mines, concentrating plants and processing plants. It also outlines Canadian policy regarding the control of the sale and distribution of uranium and other nuclear materials.OVER THIRTY YEARS AGO, I spoke to The Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy here in Montreal about radioactivity and its dangers. I must have made quite an impression thirty odd years ago, because now you have asked me to do it again. Of course, the picture has changed. Then they were mining uranium ore, recovering the radium from it and throwing away the uranium. Now they are still mining uranium ore, but are throwing the radium out on the tailings dumps. Thirty years ago, most people did not know what ""radioactivity"" meant. Nowadays, they have beard that it is dangerous, and some of them, recently, be-came worried about the radium in the tailings dumps and what becomes of it."

"With the globalization of the mining industry, many companies are now seeking to invest in underground diamond mines, with the purchase of small diamond pipes being seen as particularly attractive. However, recent experiences in South Africa have shown that many projects fail due to a lack of awareness of the hazards associated with diamond mining. In this paper three significant hazards are dealt with — mud rushes, block crushing, and implementation of an inappropriate mining method. Measures that assist in the prevention of these three hazards are given.IntroductionFor over a hundred years, South Africa has been seen as the centre of the diamond mining industry, possibly having the largest number of operational underground diamond mines in the world. Despite the fact that this industry has been dominated by large mines of De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, many small underground mines have operated profitably for a number of years, exploiting diamondiferous fissures and pipes. In the last decade there has been renewed interest in these small operations from international companies. However, many of these projects have not realized their full potential owing to a lack of appreciation of the hazards inherent in the operation of a diamond mine.Hazards Associated with Diamond MiningIn the development of a diamond mine, the mining company must be aware of the hazards associated with diamond mining. Since the time when Canada&apos;s East and West were joined by the railway, and communication was established into the interior, settlements grew on the southern fringe of the great Precambrian area that formed the northern protaxis of the continent during its vicissitudes of growth. They clung precariously to the fringe of that ancient land, for the Precambrian is not generous to those who wish to live by the fruits of the soil, except in those limited areas where the Pleistocene ice-sheet has been profuse in its gifts of clay to cover the hard surface of the Precambrian rock. Later settlements spread westwards over the expanse of Cretacean plains that now form the wheatfields of the Canadian West; but there still remained in northern and western Ontario, in eastern and northern Manitoba, a pioneer race, to whom agriculture had attractions only in so far that it provided the wherewithal to lay siege to the riches of the Precambrian. And they had a vision beyond their time. More than they knew, they had seized the fact that for the complete rounding out of Canadian national life, a8 well as for the establishing of the necessary contributions towards the economic stability of Canada and its provinces, an industry in mining sh01.dd be well and truly built in the hinterland of the central provinces. Failing the winning of mineral from the rocks, and timber from the forests, there would remain between the East and the West an enormous barrier of unproductive country which would not only be an incubus to the agricultural people in their struggle for economic liberty, but would effectively, and for all time, remain an un-populated void across which the aspirations of East and West would be unable to unite.
