Building Information Modeling is a prevailing methodology in the building industry and half (by length) of the world's shield tunnels are in Japan. Accordingly, for shield tunnels from 2005 to 2007, we developed a product model called IFC-ShieldTunnel, which is based on Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), in order to meet the future demand for such a product model. IFC-ShieldTunnel was developed by adding new elements that are specific to shield tunnels and that are not included in the original IFC. The added elements include shafts, segments (A, B, and K types), waterproofing elements, segment joint elements, and ring joint elements. Furthermore, soil layers and void elements were created. Recently, we updated the product model by re-organizing the entities and correcting errors. We deployed the updated IFCShieldTunnel model in the construction of an actual shield tunnel in Tokyo for about a year from August 2010 in order to check its feasibility. In the verification process, first, segments were modeled using Autodesk Revit Structure 2011 and property data were assigned to each segment element. Next, a mapping between the original attributes of the entities of IFC and properties of IFC-ShieldTunnel segments was developed. Using this mapping and IFC?s IfcBuildingElementProxy function, we were able to convert the IFC data from Revit Structure 2011 to IFC-ShieldTunnel automatically. Segment data were also converted from Revit Structure to Google SketchUp by IFC-ShieldTunnel. Furthermore, the construction scheduling and cost data were converted from Revit Structure to EXCEL for 4D and 5D analyses of construction. We interviewed engineers who used IFC-ShieldTunnel and received positive comments about the utilization of the product model. Overall, our test demonstrated the feasibility of IFC-ShieldTunnel. In future work, we plan to apply IFC-ShieldTunnel to more projects and test its practicality.

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. Close monitoring of performance at each process stage, from raw material through to finished product, is vital for operational consistency and the production of high quality steel. However, many of the integrated iron and steelmaking process route stages operate under such severe conditions of temperature, dust, water, thermal radiation, vibration, pressure, vacuum, extreme dynamic events, high material flows, corrosion, erosion, electrical-noise, electromagnetic-noise, or audio-noise that, in general, it is a very difficult challenge to obtain useful information for control. Thus, state-of-the-art non-contact and remote sensors are applied to help monitor and control specific process operations. Often, these sensor systems have been developed especially for the steel industry and they are based on four principal technologies: Laser, Microwave, Electro-Magnetics and Thermal Imaging with supporting technologies such as: X-ray Fluorescence, Audiometry, Digital Image Processing, Radio Telemetry, GPS and many others. These advanced sensor technologies are reviewed with respect to their application at various stages along the integrated process route.

"In this work, we found that contact between shale and water results in development of micro fractures. Based on results of experiments on Pierre shale, we conclude that appearance of micro fractures begin with saturation of capillaries, ionic and diffusive transport of water into the shale clays and once capillaries are saturated, the cause of micro fracture propagation is the conversion of ionic activity/exchange to excess pressure that did not exist before fracking. Based on these findings, the spread of micro fractures appear to be a time-dependent phenomenon which has not been addressed in the existing macro/micro fracture models.INTRODUCTIONShale has often been involved as a hazard in drilling operations. This hazard can be defined as “destabilization” of shale. When contacted with water-based drilling fluids, some shales readily swell and sometimes, cause the wellbore to cave-in, slough, wash-out, close, and pack-off, impeding the drilling by sticking the drill-pipe. However, once drilling reaches the desired depth or length, the casing is set, cemented, and perforated, and then actually we wish to initiate fractures and destabilize the shale formation, using hydraulic fracturing.Clays constitute a major portion of minerals in shale. These clays contain a large amount of free energy which is the main factor for “slick” water adsorption/absorption. In fact, the reason for using “surfactants” in hydraulic fracturing fluids is to make the penetration of the fluid into the capillaries much easier, thus water meets with less resistance to enter the small capillaries. Also, the result of high capillary suction pressure is due to small Angstrom size capillaries, smaller pores and presence of ions and hydrateable metal atoms. The free energy is thus, related to all the above mentioned and other affects. Capillary pressure, osmotic pressure and other pressures are responsible for creating the micro-fractures in shale, thus, increasing the network of micro-fractures which leads to more gas production. The objective of this study is to evaluate the pressures of the individual ions which are released by the diffusing “slick” water into shale. These pressures would be added to the above mentioned capillary pressure, osmotic pressure, bacterially-induced pressures, chemically-induced reaction pressure, pressure due to exchangeable ion-transport, pressure due to release of free energy of solvation and eventually to the pore pressure as suggested by Terzaghi’s equation."

The Ekati Safety Guarantee is a conversation that has been taking place at Ekati for the last two years. It is a challenging, confronting, inspiring conversation which encourages people to see and pursue the possibility of guaranteeing that nobody who works at Ekati will be seriously injured or killed at work. The conversation takes us out of the normal, incremental approach to safety improvement; it takes us out of the world of striving, of seeking, of trying, and allows us to stand in, and be a stand for the future possibility of Zero Harm. It requires an unreasonable stand for, and commitment to, our own safety and the safety of our colleagues. A Powerful Conversation The safety guarantee began with conversations between executive team members and has been propagated regularly through the line through management meetings, pre-shift meetings, during workplace inspections, job safety observations, job and project planning, orientation and induction sessions, and when opportunities present themselves. This is a conversation that continues outside of Ekati with family, with government, with community members. It is a stand for safety as a value. The conversation about the safety guarantee is now pervasive at Ekati and forms part of a framework of initiatives that have led to sustained improvement in safety performance. During the last two years, the recordable injury frequency at Ekati has dropped to its lowest level in Ekati?s history. At the same time, job safety observations have increased from 500 per month to 4000 per month, whilst the overall number of people at Ekati has reduced by 30%. It has led to new ways of thinking about the conduct of operations. It influenced the 2008 upgrade of the Ekati process plant, resulting in the development and implementation of a crane lift protocol that eliminated injuries during over 100 lifts in two weeks, in an area of difficult geometry and with multiple entrances. It created space to successfully conduct a challenging commissioning period for the process plant crusher, during which time the machine was disassembled and reassembled several times, without incident or injury. No production pressure was permitted to interfere with this work, in line with our stated aim that we wanted everyone involved to guarantee that they would not be seriously injured or killed?our people had the space to do the work at a pace, and in a way, that guaranteed this outcome.

Rolls-Royce Canada has been nominated as a Rolls-Royce Center of Excellence for repair of fan blades in 2003. One of the challenges of the Rolls-Royce Canada Component Repair Center of Excellence team is to reduce cost and time of inspection while ensuring trace ability and quality of the inspection performed on the fan blades. In the context of the dimensional control process optimization, and following the positive conclusions of initial trials carried out in 2003, the technical authorities at RRC have selected the SPG data 3D(TM) technology as a development base for dimensional control programs. The main goal of this development initiative is to develop and support an inspection system to perform the dimensional control and inspection of different components at the Montreal Fan Blade Repair Center of Excellence. The final objective of the program is to build a server platform capable to support different inspection sites within the Montreal facility for the future. This paper presents the certification process of the technology according to the VDI-VDE 2633 certification standards and some results of the fan blade inspection program of the BR 710, BR 715 and TAY according to the JES 195 engineering standards specification.

Today Li-ion batteries are considered as one of the most attractive available energy storage solutions. However in order to overcome environmental, legislative and economic issues, the management of used batteries has to be considered and mainly the recycling. The present paper deals with the recycling of used Li-ion batteries and the recovery of high value metals from active materials of electrodes. Lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide (NCA) and lithium manganese nickel magnesium oxide (LMNM) cathodes, which contain most of valuable elements typically used in the composition of active materials for Li-ion batteries are investigated by a hydrometallurgy route. The process is divided into two steps: the materials leaching and the elements recovery by a selective chemical separation. Some experimental parameters (acid nature, concentration, time and temperature) are studied to determine the most efficient conditions of dissolution. Then, the valuable elements such as nickel, cobalt and manganese are selectively recovered with a high efficiency close to 100 % and with a high purity by precipitation. By this study, an adaptable hydrometallurgy process can be defined according to the composition of Li-ion batteries to recycle.

Gold has been mined from a variety of deposit types that range in age from Archaean to Recent. The large variability in the geological settings of the gold deposits implies transport and concentration of gold by magnetic, hydrothermal and sedimentary processes. The factors that control the concentration of gold at certain sites and the grade estimation thereof remain major topics of debate. Due to the complex nature of the Witwatersrand Basin a mineralogical study, including mineralogical, petrographic and geochemical investigation was launched on TauTona Mine in order to characterize the various reef facies. The aim of the investigation was to determine if a correlation could be found between macroscopic characteristics of the reef, hanging wall and footwall, and the microscopic nature of the ore (especially gold grade). Petrograpgic and mineralogical results indicate that a correlation exist between gold, detrital and hydrothermal sulphides, uraninite, carbon, detrital heavyminerals and phyllosilicates. No correlation exist between gold and Mg, Fe or S. It appears that clast supported reef is of higher wade than matrix supported, but more work is suggested. No correlation exists between reef thickness and grade. The reef samples had the lowest phyllosilicate content compared to the hanging wall and footwall samples with pyrophyllite the most dominant. All of the correlations diagrams showed significant scatter and suggests a multi- factorial mineralization model. Gold distribution is also controlled by sedimentary features and thus it is not possible to select a single model for the formation and distribution of gold. It is evident that both sedimentary and hydrothermal factors influenced the mineralization and gold distribution on TauTona mine. It is thus essential that all related theories be incorporated in the development of a grade prediction model.

"The technology known as Expert Systems is being used within the minerals industry in a wide variety of problem areas. Applications include diagnosis, prediction, training, monitoring and control. Expert Systems provide a way to program computers to imitate human thinking. The construction of such systems is a straight-forward task that can be quickly learned by novices but can require a lifetime to master.To assist in the understanding and utility of this technology, a special manual bas been prepared which operates on a microcomputer under the MS-Windows environment. The manual covers all aspects of Artificial Intelligence of relevance to Expert Systems. A hypertext system allows users to probe as d•~ply as needed to achieve understanding or to simply skim the surface of the knowledge to obtain a quick overview of subjects. The manual was developed under the sponsorship of the Mineral Sciences Laboratory of CANMET and is available from the Mining and Mineral Process Engineering Department at the University of British Columbia. Annual updates are planned to keep abreast of new developments in this rapidly changing technology. RESUMELa technologie: des Systèmes Experts est utilisée par l'industrie minière pour résoudre une grande variété de problèmes. Les domaines d'application comprennent le diagnostic, la prédiction, la formation, la surveillance et le contrôle des procèdes. The decommissioning of uranium tailings facilities often requires the design of a suitable cover system. In northern climatic environments there is a portion each year that can be considered to be ?inactive? while the remainder of the year can be considered to be ?active?. There are numerous engineering design assumptions required when analyzing both the ?active? and the ?inactive? portions of the year. Cover systems are subjected to complex boundary conditions and nonlinear unsaturated soil properties. The proposed paper describes the steps necessary for the preparation and the analysis of a multi-year climatic database for the design of a cover system in northern environments. The paper also explains how climate can be classified and how observed variations from one year to the next can be taken into consideration in cover design. The results of climatic records at two different sites are used to illustrate conditions that need to be taken into consideration when designing soil cover systems.

"The fourth concentrate production plant includes the comminution systems and the medium-low intensity magnetic separators (LIMS). Based on different conditions, two types of materials are fed into the plant. Type A: 70% of mine ore and 30% of reject materials from magnetite plant and type B: 100% of mine ore. The goal of the present study was to increase the iron grade and the blain number with low sulfur content in final concentrate as the pellet feed. An appropriate pellet feed should have more than 67% of iron, less than 0.1% of sulfur and a Blain number of more than 1800 cm2/g. The Fe, S and Blain no. amounts for the present concentrate are 66.6%, 0.95%, and 500 cm2/g (feed type:A) and 67.8%, 2.3%, and 450 cm2/g (feed type: B), respectively. In this research, the plant improvement efficiency was evaluated by changing the feed particle size distribution and using the flotation system. Laboratory experiments were designed based on the three circuits:1) LIMS (Low Intensity Grinding Rolls) feed grinding-LIMS test-flotation test2) LIMS feed grinding-flotation test-LIMS test3) LIMS concentrate grinding-flotation testThe best results were obtained using the first circuit at the LIMS feed size (d80) of 132 ?m. The processing results using the circuit no. 1 (feed type: A), showed a LIMS concentrate with 69.8% of Fe and 0.36% of sulfur. In this case, the final concentrate (after flotation) with Fe grade of 70.3%, sulfur content of 0.07% and Blain no. of 1571 cm2/g were obtained. In case of the feed type of B, the LIMS concentrate with Fe grade of 68.7%, and sulfur grade of 1.6% was achieved. Also, the Fe and sulfur contents were 69.3%, and 0.4% respectively with a Blain number of 1112 cm2/g. According to the obtained results, it was suggested that a LIMS feed comminution along with a LIMS and flotation systems are necessary to achieve an appropriate iron and sulfur grades with an acceptable blain number. To reach a concentrate Blain number as a pelletizing feed, a High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) system at the end of the processing line was recommended."

"Abstract - The Las Cañas stratabound Pb-Zn deposit, in northern Chile, is hosted by the Lower Cretaceous back-arc marine carbonate and subordinate andesitic volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the Chañarcillo Group, one hundred meters above a thick pile of magmatic arc-related basaltic to andesitic lavas of the Bandurrias Formation. The deposit is not obviously related to local intrusive rocks, which include an Upper Cretaceous granodiorite batholith and dacite dikes emplaced along normal faults. Stratabound Pb-Zn-Ba mineralization is constrained within several porous stratigraphic units, including a 50 cm thick lapilli-tuff and less well mineralized algal-laminated limestone. Veins that locally carry some Pb-Zn occur along normal faults that displace the stratabound orebodies, and this study shows that they represent a different type of mineralization.Fluid inclusion microthermometric data for ore-stage quartz and barite indicate saline fluids (6 to 30 wt% NaCleq) and a formation temperature in the range of 80°C to 160°C for the stratabound mineralization. Two types of fluid inclusions occur in the veins. The type I vein fluid inclusions indicate less saline (average 7 wt% NaCleq) and slightly higher temperature fluids, in the range of 110°C to 220°C. The type II vein fluid inclusions indicate highly saline fluids (25 to 40 wt% NaCleq) which might be related to minor copper mineralization.206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios for galenas from the stratabound mineralization, with mean values of 18.42, 15.59, and 38.25, respectively, fall within the range of stratabound polymetallic deposits of northern and central Chile, and indicate a Lower Cretaceous magmatic rock source. Galenas from veins have slightly more radiogenic 206Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb and 208Pb/204Pb ratios, with mean values of 18.47, 15.61, and 38.34, suggesting two distinct episodes of mineralization.?34S values for galena and barite range from negative values (-31.2‰ to -12.5‰ and -7.7‰ to +12‰, respectively) in the mineralized tuff to higher values in the algal-laminated limestone (-2.5‰ to +1.2‰ and +13.2‰ to +17.4‰, respectively), close to Lower Cretaceous marine sulfate values for barite, and homogeneous values for the galena from veins (-12.0‰ ±1‰). Changing redox conditions can partly account for ?34S variations in the tuff. Sulfur sources include magmatic rock sulfur (-1.5‰ to +9.7‰) as well as sedimentary sulfides and marine sulfate."

This paper examines several new trends in the design and application of linings for copper melting shaft furnaces including the use of large shapes, monolithic back-up linings and improved refractory engineering to significantly reduce refractory installation time, diamond saw blade costs, fuel and down-time. The net results are shown to be dramatically increased refractory service life, reusable safety linings, elimination of hot spots and lower refractory disposal costs.

"In block caving projects, the rock mass fragmentation process plays a controlling role in the design and success of the operation. Poorly understood, however, is the secondary fragmentation that occurs as blocks of caved ore move through the draw column and interact with one another. The initial size of these blocks can be considerable, as can their strength and stiffness as the presence of non-persistent joints and veining will be variable. Intuitively, more planes of weakness within the blocks should facilitate early fragmentation, but this assumption could depend on additional factors such as contact type between adjacent blocks and loads imposed through varying heights of the draw column. This paper reports the findings from a laboratory investigation examining the role of block strength and planes of weakness on secondary fragmentation. Testing was carried out on small-scale concrete cubes of uniform size, with and without embedded planes of weakness. The results obtained demonstrate the significance of veining and other planes of weakness on secondary fragmentation under one-dimensional compression, and allow for the development and constraint of empirical guidelines.INTRODUCTIONThe fragmentation process during block caving involves the initial (primary) fragmentation of rock in the cave back through stress-induced fracturing, release and fall of individual blocks onto the broken ore muck pile. This is followed by secondary fragmentation involving splitting and rounding of blocks as they move downwards through the draw column towards the draw point. The degree of secondary fragmentation achieved involves many variables related to the mechanical properties of the rock blocks as well as different operational factors. With respect to the block properties, the presence of planes of weakness in the form of veining and non-persistent joints is a topic of special interest given the significant influence it potentially has on the overall fragmentation process. However, the inherent heterogeneity and variable size of individual blocks generated from the cave back makes it difficult to develop any empirical relationships relating secondary fragmentation to compressive loading based on insitu observations and mine data. More preferable would be to keep constant block parameters, such as shape (aspect ratio and angularity) and size, through controlled laboratory testing. This work presents an efficient technique to fabricate concrete cubes in order to keep constant different block properties. These are then tested under one-dimensional compressive loading. The objective of these tests is to emulate a tight packing condition of single blocks such as that which would occur when the air gap between the cave back and broken ore in the draw column is small. When the air gap is small, detached blocks are unable to fall and rotate but instead maintain a very tidy arrangement with minimal voids left between adjacent blocks."

"The flotation of monazite is depressed when using hydroxamic acid as a collector in the presence of calcium ions which may exist due to the dissolution of minerals such as calcite. Minor dosages of sodium hexametaphosphate (SHMP) were found to effectively depress calcite, whereas the flotation of monazite was not impaired in single mineral flotation tests. However, in a mixed mineral flotation system, monazite flotation was depressed significantly. The mechanism of hydroxamate adsorption on monazite and calcite, the depression mechanism of calcite on monazite, as well as the depression mechanism of SHMP on calcite and monazite were studied using micro-flotation, electro-kinetic, and adsorption tests. Findings indicate that the adsorption of hydroxamate on monazite was due to chemisorption while adsorption on calcite was a result of physical interaction. SHMP significantly increased the negative charges of calcite surfaces which depressed the adsorption of the hydroxamate anions on the calcite surfaces due to an elevated electrostatic repulsion force. When calcium-rich minerals such as calcite are mixed with monazite, the calcium ions dissolved from the mineral surfaces specifically adsorb onto the phosphate oxygen sites on the monazite mineral surfaces thereby causing depressing effects. The addition of SHMP to suppress collector adsorption on the calcite surfaces interacts with the calcium species that were specifically adsorbed onto the monazite surface, which prevents hydroxamic acid adsorption onto the rare earth oxygen sites due steric hindrance and results in the flotation depression of monazite. INTRODUCTIONAs one of the commercial rare earth ores, monazite has been widely exploited to produce additives for catalysts, batteries, alloys, etc. Because of the complexity and the fine nature of some monazite ores, methods such as gravity, magnetic, and electrostatic separation to treat beach sand monazite fail to produce satisfactory concentrates, suggesting the use of floatation is warranted (Cheng, Holtham, & Tran, 1993). The primary associated minerals of monazite ores include ilmenite, quartz, zircon, rutile, sillimanite (Dixit & Biswas, 1969; Pavez a& Peres, 1994, 1993). Using sodium oleate as collector for monazite has been reported in many studies (Cheng et al., 1993; Dixit & Biswas, 1969; Pavez & Peres, 1994, 1993). Several investigations have reported maximum floatability of monazite occurring at pH values between 8 and 9 (Cheng et al., 1993; Dixit & Biswas, 1969). Presently,Many long-wall fully-mechanized faces in shallow depth coal seams are below room and pillar goaf in Shendong mining area. When the working face is advanced out of concentrated coal pillar in upper room and pillar goaf, strong strata behaviors often cause support crushing accident. Aiming at a support crushing accident which happened in Shigetai coal mine of Shenhua group in Shendong mining area, this paper analyses the stress transfer process while mining out of concentrated coal pillar by numerical simulation software FLAC3D. According to the feature, simplifying the roof of upper room and pillar goaf as supporting-beam structure explains mechanism of large area collapse in room and pillar goaf roof. Based on the feature of supporting-beam structure, deep-hole blasting concentrated coal pillar technology is proposed to control the strong strata behaviors in Shigetai coal mine. The blasting control effect is confirmed through characteristics of strata behaviors, growth circumstance of ground crack and multi-point extensometer monitoring results. By using control technology, Shigetai coal mine has been successfully avoided support crushing accident.

The operation of Quarry and Aggregate sites are similar to factory production, since it contains sequential production processes, tasks and activities to produce the output product. Compared to the plant though, the quarry processes are generally not synchronized and controlled towards the overall throughput of the site in real time. Some quarries control parts of the production but do generally not utilize real-time technologies for the whole site and all its activities. This fact indicates a general improvement potential in increased productivity at quarry sites, but also unsolved challenges for the same reason. The main contribution of this paper is the presentation of a Lean based method for how to describe the processes to identify control improvement potential within a site. The aim of the identified improvements is to increase overall site productivity by optimizing site, fleet and machine utilization towards the overall throughput, and minimizing operational expenses and inventories. Further the paper exemplifies the method?s usability with field studies at operational quarry plants successfully identifying and quantifying potential wastes and improvements. In addition the identified productivity improvements based on increased control and automation indicate challenges and needs in wireless communication and sensing technologies.

"Continuous thickening by an operation called sedimentation is the separation of suspended solid particles from a liquid stream by gravity settling. The primary purpose of thickening is to increase the solids concentration of the feed stream. High rate thickeners are designed specifically to maximise the flocculation efficiency. A detailed investigation has been carried out to understand the influence of ore type and operating parameters such as bed level, bed mass, rake arm torque and flocculent concentration on thickening operation. Tata steel’s Noamundi plant data shows that variation in ore type, and operating parameters are major contributors to fluctuation in thickener performance. A lot of research has been done earlier on thickening operation but effect of ore type and operating variables by using plant data was never touched before.In this context, the performance of thickener was evaluated by daily data to study the influence of ore type and operating variables on thickener operation. Investigation shows that friable ore % in feed mix is proportional to slime density because friable ore is porous & brittle in nature. As a result, friable ore generates more fines/ultrafine during communition process in wash plant. Increase in flocculant concentration and bed mass is showing a positive change on high rate thickener performance Investigation shows that optimum bed mass and flocculant concentration is required to achieve desired pulp density in thickener underflow at different feed pulp density (g/cc).INTRODUCTIONOver the years, Iron Ore Beneficiation at Tata Steel, Noamundi has seen varied changes. Depletion of high grade iron and with increasing iron ore throughputs coupled with lowering of the hard ore a subsequent increase in slime generation, slime management and clear water requirement for wet Plant has thrown up myriad challenges. To overcome these challenges, many improvements initiatives were taken by Tata Steel in last decade. One of the major changes is the recent High Rate Thickener commissioning at Tata Steel Noamundi to cater the high iron ore throughput requirement. Slime reporting to Thickener has increased from 1.4 MTPA 2.5 MTPA over the last few decades. The above changes further aggravate the poor settling and dewatering characteristics of the slurry which is being feed to HRT. Considering the above mentioned constraints and stringent environmental implication proper water management has become a major challenge to reckon with. The thickener is used to increase the concentration of the suspension by sedimentation, accompanied by the formation of a clear liquid. In most cases the concentration of the suspension is high and hindered settling takes place."
