THE present demand for men with engineering training exceeds anything in the history of the profession. Recent estimates indicate that mechanization of war has reached such a stage that at least twelve horsepower is required now for every one horsepower needed to run the machines of the first Great War. The scale of operations exceeds anything in the past, while more territory and people are involved than ever before. Many of our allies have inadequate or no facilities for producing the thousand and one articles absolutely necessary to the conduct of modern warfare. Lack of preparedness has made it necessary to produce at an unparalleled rate to gain parity with the enemy, while our losses have been so heavy that replacement, in itself, presents a task which might well stagger less courageous peoples. This means that not only is there an unprecedented demand for engineers to produce the machines, munitions, and supplies of war, but there is a correspondingly large need for men with engineering skill in the uniformed forces to operate and maintain the vast numbers of ships, 'planes, tanks, trucks, radios, and a myriad of other devices to carry on the varied activities of war. This abnormal demand came upon us after almost ten years of stagnation in the engineering industries. During this time many trained engineers drifted into other callings, while the lack of jobs for graduates caused a falling off in the number of men training for this profession. Consequently, the supply of well trained engineers was below normal when the madman of Germany precipitated us into the present turmoil. Added to all this, we in Canada are still suffering from governmental inefficiency in the utilization of the available supply of engineers. In the armed forces, engineers have been assigned to office and other work where their engineering training is not only wasted but for which men with more suitable training could be found. Mining engineers are debarred from service as aeronautical engineers, and students in mining engineering are denied the bursaries provided for aiding students in engineering. Mining and metallurgical engineers are both barred from the Ordnance department of the army. This arises from a misunderstanding in relation to engineering training. In Canadian engineering schools, all engineers are given a sound training in the branches of human knowledge which are fundamental to engineering: mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The basic difference between the several categories of engineers lies in the fact that training in the application of this fundamental knowledge to the solution of engineering problems is given in different subjects.

"Accident prevention has been an on-going priorty for five years. In 1987, adherence to the ILCI five-star rating loss control program was started, and a first star was awarded. Extensive training programs have been undertaken to establish standard procedures and upgrade employee skills. Due to its location, Selbaie owns and rents housing in the town of Joutel and contracts a busing service to and from the mine. Employees from other areas are lodged in dormitories and fed in the site dining room. Accounting and warehousing services are carried out in efficient fashion. Employee relations are structured to provide prompt resolution of complaints and differences. No lost time due to industrial relations differences has been encountered during the history of the mine.Safety and Loss ControlAll mines are concerned and occupied with a wide range of activities to ensure the safety of its employees. Selbaie is no exception. Programs to achieve success in safety and loss control have been implanted since the start of construction and development at Selbaie and have followed three interesting stages of evolution."

The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of samples of Mg2(OH)3Cl.2H2O that were obtained by a novel leaching technique applied to a commercial magnesium electrolysis feed were investigated under ambient atmosphere. Thermogravimetric (TG) Analysis showed that decomposition of Mg2(OH)3Cl.2H2O exhibited a single intermediate stage wherein crystalline water was lost at roughly 108 °C. Conversion of the resulting Mg2(OH)3Cl to MgO, HCl and 1120 occurred at temperatures above 398 °C. Thermal decomposition of anhydrous Mg2(OH)3Cl was seen to be consist of two stages. Both stages exhibit first order kinetics with respect to the weight percent of Mg2(OH)3Cl remaining in the sample. However, the rates of decomposition in the two stages were significantly different. Detailed analysis of the kinetic data suggested that the rate of decomposition of Mg2(OH)3C1 was controlled by the rate of removal of the gases released. The change in decomposition rate during the course of the experiments was explained by HCI being released in stage 1 and followed by release of H2O in stage 2.

"The Guide to the Evaluation of Gold Deposits reviews the successive evaluation steps in the domains of geology, engineering, and economics. The Guide analyzes, in a systemic perspective, the sequence of exploration, development, and evaluation work required to bring a mineral deposit to production. The aim is to identify the metal/mineralization losses and ore dilution that each work step contributes to the evaluation and mining process. The procedure allows one to maximize the income and profits of a mining operation, and to reduce the risks of financial losses tied to investment decisions in the mining sector. For greater efficiency, the criteria of reserve estimation and classification should be integrated with the evaluation steps and methods. At earlier stages of deposit development, when quantitative knowledge is available mainly on the geological axis, the term ""delimited mineral deposit"" should be used. The term ""reserve"" should be used only in an operating mine or in a mining project, when information in the geological, engineering, and economic domains is adequate to ensure technical and financial feasibility. ""Reserves"" are by definition ""mining reserves"". Each category of proven/probable reserves and measured/indicated deposits should be subdivided into two classes to express better the many steps of mineral valuation. The category of ""possible reserves"" shall be replaced by that of ""inferred mineralization"". This system, derived from the Australasian Code, can easily be integrated into current practices of the exploration and mining industry within a short timeframe. The proposal to develop the use of the margins of error of the estimates at a confidence level of90% should be viewed in a longer timeframe. Establishing the precision of the mineral inventories and distinguishing between categories and classes by means of the margin of error will require more work and a longer break-in period.SOMMAIRELe ""Guide d’évaluation des gisements d'or"" analyse, dans une approche systémique, les travaux d'évaluation et de mise en valeur des gisements minéraux dans l'axe de la géologie, dans l'axée l'ingénierie et dans I ‘axe de l'économique. Plusieurs essais démontrent que le système propose, qui s'inspire du Code australasien, peut facilement et rapidement s'intégrer dans les pratiques de l'industrie. II pourrait également contribuer à une standardisation des méthodes et des nomenclatures à l'échelle internationale. La proposition d'utiliser les marges d'erreur des estimes au niveau de confiance de90%pour caractériser les estimations se situe dans une plus longue perspective. Abstract Canada has opened up a geological province in ?Western Canada which offers a new .stimulus to oil exploration geophysics. The problems of instrumental technique, interpretation, and logistics involved in the exploration of this new territory are presented in this paper and some of the efforts being undertaken to overcome them are discussed. The scope of this programme, its possible trend and extent, especially when viewed .against the background of the exploration effort in the United States, is touched upon. Introduction The science of earth physics was first applied to the search for oil on this continent some twenty-five years ago when torsion balance and refraction seismic methods were initiated in the Gulf Coast area of the United States. Since that time advances in the various branches of the science have been sporadic as new fields for their use opened up in the search for deep salt domes as well as less well-defined geological structures; in the application to well logging as part of the exploitation of petroleum; and in underwater surveys, aerial surveys, etc. In the present paper, attention has been concentrated only on the Western Canada plains area because of the recent remarkable growth of geophysics as an oil finding technique in this region. The other prospective oil areas of the West Coast and the Eastern Provinces of Canada are at present of minor importance, although they will undoubtedly receive increasing consideration in the future as accessibility to markets becomes a major factor and more improved geophysical and geological techniques are developed. A vast province in Canada, covering some 655,000 square miles of prospective oil territory (approximately one-half of the prospective oil area in the United States), has provided the new sphere of activity for geophysics (see Figures 1 and 2). Included in this area are immense inaccessible, uninhabited frozen regions which pose a new problem in logistics and operational techniques.

The loss of fluid to the formation adjacent a fracture governs the areal extent of the fracture and the success of hydraulic fracturing as a production stimulation technique. The three flow mechanisms which control this loss are the result of the viscosity of the fracturing fluid and the permeability of the formation to the fracturing fluid, its wall building properties, and the combined effects of viscosity and compressibility of the reservoir fluid. The effects of these flow mechanisms can be evaluated in terms of a fracturing fluid coefficient, the fundamental concepts of which are developed in the paper. The fracturing fluid coefficient, which may be used in calculating the areal extent of fracturing, affords a direct measure of the effectiveness of fracturing fluids. The area of hydraulically created fractures is in-creased as the coefficient is de-creased. The fifteen-fold variation noted in this coefficient for the commercially available fracturing fluids tested resulted in a six-fold difference m the calculated areal extent of the fracture system.

"The coal handling plant represents an investment of about $100 million in coal handling and storage equipment. The coal receiving is done by a continuous ship unloader that can handle ships in the 60 000 T range at Q rate of 1750 /ph. A unique feature in the system is a stacker/reclaimer unit which will work inside a dome storage structure. The coal for the unit will include any low sulphur coal that can be delivered by sea at an economical price blended with New Brunswick high sulphur coal.ThE flue gas scrubber is a wet limestone system capable of 95% SO2 removal. The scrubber will utilize about 150 000 tonnes of limestone per year and will produce commercial grade gypsum by the forced oxidization method.IntroductionWith the need for new generating capacity being required, New Brunswick Power reviewed, in 1985, its options for the next unit. The study indicated that the most attractive option for New Brunswick Power would be a coal-fired unit capable of receiving imported coal at a sea port. The site selection process resulted in three site options being considered.The existing Coleson Cove and Dalhousie sites, and the Belledune site were considered. To meet load distribution needs, it was then decided that the unit had to be located in the northern section of the province, thus eliminating the Coleson Cove site. The Belledune site was selected because it had the capacity to have additional units added where as the Dalhousie site would have only been able to accommodate one unit"

"Geophysical test surveys were conducted with various methods (EM, lP, gravity and magnetic) over the McClean uranium deposits of the Canadian Oxy- lnco Joint Venture. The result s were assessed to judge the contribution each method might make toward further discoveries of graphite-associated uranium occurrences.The best drill targets have proven to be discontinuities in graphitic conductors and locations where the tatter are intersected by fracture zones in the Athabasca. The tests demonstrated that the preferred combination of geophysical survey s is horizontal loop EM to locate graphitic conductors in the basement and VLF-EM to locate the fractures.IntroductionThe discoveries of the McClean North and South uranium deposit s (Fig. 1) are essentially geophysical successes resulting from drilling MaxMin delineations of INPUT airborne electromagnetic responses (Saracoglu et al., 1983). After the initial discovery in 1979, various geophysical methods, techniques and instruments were employed to test their effectiveness in this environment and to guide exploration for other deposit s of a similar nature in the remainder of the 260 km2 property.The McClean uranium deposits lie below 150 m to 180 m of overburden and Athabasca Group. Radioactive signatures might be expected; however, the Athabasca Group acts as a barrier to radioactive emanations. Fortunately, the uranium mineralization is associated with graphite in the crystalline basement. Prior drilling of ground electromagnetic anomalies confirmed that EM surveys could locate and out line basement graphitic conductors. However, as there were many anomalies, most of which could not reasonably be expected to be associated with uranium , there was need to identify additional parameters, related to mineralization, which could be detected geophysically and used to narrow the search."

"IntroductionAT NORANDA, the strength of the ore and wall-rocks per-mitted mining in large open stopes. While some of the orebodies were small and could be mined out in one stope, in most cases their size was such that it was essential that ore pillars be left during the first stage of mining. In these cases, backfilling has been necessary for ground control and to facilitate the later recovery of the ore in these pillars.This paper discusses the development of the •backfill and •its use in pillar recovery.GeologyThe ore bodies at Noranda occur as replacement deposits in a block of rhyolite flows and breccias, bounded on the north by the Horne Creek fault and on the south by the Noranda Andesite fault. Mineralization consists of pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, gold, and various tellurides.The main orebody is a massive sulphide deposit designated the 'H' orebody. It is elliptical in plan, measuring roughly 400 feet by 800 feet, and is divided into two zones -Upper H, extending from surface to the 1,500-foot level, and Lower H, from the 1 ,500-foot level to just below the 3,000-foot level.Mining MethodsOpen stope mining in both Upper H and Lower H zones has been fully described in previous publications (1). A brief review only of the mining methods will be given here."

"The metallurgy of nickel and cobalt and of copper is closely interlinked when processing sulfidic Ni-Co ores and Cu-Co ores. The respective furnaces are typically lined with magnesia-chromite refractories, which are exposed to multiple and complex stresses. The selection of the processing route, furnace type and slag system will be dictated by the specific ore type available, this will determine the individual refractory wear mode. This paper evaluates the common refractory wear mechanisms, namely infiltration, spalling and chemical attack by various slag systems, as well as sulfur attack, as observed when processing primary sulfidic ores. All these wear parameters, which are discussed in this paper, lead to a severe degeneration of the brick microstructure and a decreased lining life. Therefore, a detailed investigation and understanding of the wear mechanisms through “post mortem studies” is an important prerequisite for the refractory producer. Based on such research results, combined with specific process knowledge, appropriate brick lining solutions for nickel and cobalt processing furnaces can be recommended.INTRODUCTION The metallurgical production of cobalt and nickel and of copper is closely interlinked to the mineralogy of the respective ores: cobalt is found in African Cu-Co ores as well as in Co-rich nickel ores (laterites and sulfides). Also, Co-bearing secondary raw materials contain the mentioned elements in different contents. In pyrometallurgical processing of sulfidic ores, cobalt is generally recovered as a by-product during the production of copper and nickel, whereas it is normally not recovered separately during the processing of nickel laterites but remains in the FeNi product. Besides various hydrometallurgical production routes, the pyrometallurgical processes involved comprise smelting (i.e., production of a Cu-Ni-Co-Fe matte in electric or flash furnaces), converting and refining (i.e. removal of Fe and S as well as other elements from matte by oxidation). The ongoing trend to use higher oxygen enrichment in process air enables higher intensity processes but also increases the oxidation potential in the vessel. Therefore, during smelting and especially during the oxidative treatment in converting and refining, some amounts of valuable metals are also transferred to the slag in their oxides form. A subsequent slag treatment is then applied for recovering valuable metals from the slag, namely allowing an economic material stream handling and minimizing metal losses. This is often done in a slag reduction furnace. Additionally, copper and nickel are very good collectors for precious metals and platinum group metals (PGMs) - therefore, depending on the content of these metals, an additional refining process is used to recover these valuable metals from the matte or metal phase (Elvers et al., 1997; Davenport et al., 2002; Crundwell et al., 2011)."

The microstructure evolution kinetics of aluminum alloy B206 during artificial aging has been investigated using non-isothermal calorimetry. A combination of differential-scanning calorimetry (DSC) and tensile tests have been utilized to develop an Avrami model to predict the precipitation kinetics as a function of the thermal processing parameters. The Avrami coefficients, found based on a Kissinger analysis, compare well against those reported in the literature for aluminum-copper alloys. The rapid precipitation kinetics predicted by the Avrami model at temperatures higher than 200°C were assessed through a qualitative comparison against hardness measurement results. In contrast to the continuous hardening observed at 150°C, the material softens with continuing heat treatment at 250°C resulting in an overaged state. This can be attributed to the rapid precipitation kinetics at this temperature, leading to the termination of the precipitation-hardening effects at early stages of artificial aging.

"High tirerim loading on haul trucks operating on rough ground frequently manifests as mechanical separations and rim base cracking caused by cyclic fatigue. This paper provides an understanding of the impact of high loads on rim component life and tire footprint, bulge, and deformation behaviour; and develops a maintenance planning tool to predict strain implications of high g loading for a given rim location. Loading tests and analyses were conducted for a tirerim arrangement under increasing load and internal tire pressure. For example, for many years oil sand mining operations have expressed qualitative beliefs that an impact load of the magnitude experienced by a rim and tire arrangement is not detrimental to a rim as a stiff component; however, mining equipment components are subjected to cyclic loading where failure can result from repeated load/unload activity, truncating the peak region of a stress–strain response and resulting in fatigue failure at a stress value that is less than the peak value. The outcome reported by oil sand haul truck maintenance groups indicates they have realized that most high g impacts—such as those experienced by hauler tires and rims operating on poor ground conditions—can result in failure due to cyclic loading, where higher loads require fewer cycles for failure. This high-level loading and the resulting strain transmitted to the rim is evident in the results of the laboratory testing presented in this paper."

"American Barrick has always balanced its aggressive operating approach with a conservative financial strategy. In fact, what enables their mining team to pursue such aggressive plans with confidence is the conservative financial strategy adhered to by the company. These policies are built on a prudent mix of gold linked financings, equity and gold price hedging.This paper outlines these policies and focusses in particular on American Barrick's gold price hedging program.IntroductionThe company's balance sheet at the end of 1990 clearly shows the wisdom of its conservative policies. Total assets have grown to over US$1 billion; cash has grown to US$312 million and shareholders' equity to US$645 million. All amounts included in this paper are quoted in U.S. dollars. Increased gold production and an effective gold price hedging program also combined to produce record income from operations, earnings and cash flow in 1990.The first half of 1991 is also indicative of the benefits of the company's conservative financial policies. Increasing production, together with its comprehensive gold hedging program, has generated increased earnings, even in a period of falling gold prices.All year-over-year numbers for the first six months are up. Gold production was 36% higher; earnings of $40.2 million $ 0.30 per share - were 46% higher than 1990.Barricks revenue continued to increase despite gold prices remaining unchanged during 1990. Barrick's hedging policy protects the company from falling gold prices on the basis that the upside looks after itself. Their hedging program - including various goldlinked fmancings - enabled Barrick to realize an average price of $437 per ounce of gold sold in 1990, compared with the Comex average gold price for the year of $384 per ounce."

"The gold mines of Kirkland Lake are in Teck township, Timiskaming district, Ontario, latitude 48°9'N. and longitude 80°3'W., at an elevation of 1,038 feet above sea-level.There are seven contiguous producing mines in a length of 3;1/2 miles along the general east-west strike of the deposits. The seven mines are, in order from west to east, Macassa, Kirkland Lake, Teck-Hughes, Lake Shore, Wright-Hargreaves, Sylvanite, and Toburn.The first discovery of gold in the zone was made by W. H. Wright in 1911 on the east claim of the Wright-Hargreaves property, and the following year the Tough brothers and H. Oakes found gold in what is now the No. 1 vein_ at the Toburn. Production began at the Toburn in 1915, followed by Teck-Hughes in 1917, Lake Shore in 1918, Kirkland Lake Gold in 1919, Wright-Hargreaves in 1921, Sylvanite in 1927, and Macassa in 1933.To the end of 1946, 31,938,350 tons of ore had been milled at the Kirkland Lake mines, from which 16,132,700 oz. gold, having a value of $498,517,600, were recovered. The bullion varies from mine to mine between 800 and 900 fine, the average for all the mines being 853. LKAB (Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB) is operating underground iron ore mine, with three beneficiation and pelletizing plants in Kiruna, Northern Sweden. The wet low intensity magnetic separation (WLIMS) is regarded as the crucial part of silicate mineral separation from the ore. The Kiirunavaara iron ore deposit shows a rather low content of silica (ca. 2.3 to 3.3 % SiO2) but the silica grade is expected to increase in the deeper parts of the deposit. This can be problematic in the case of DR pellet quality with an average silica grade under 0.75 % SiO2. A laboratory scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterization of the ore for mineral processing with the focus on silicates at the Institute of Mineral Processing, University of Leoben. This methodology is combining mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN) was used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. Based on the mineralogical investigations, actinolite, phlogopite and even quartz and albite are the predominating SiO2 bearing minerals in the ore. The important result of the investigations was the discovery of two separate subtypes within the high silica ore type B2 based on their mineralogy and mineral processing characteristics. The crucial part of the investigations of intergrowths and liberation of magnetite results was the magnetic separation tests carried out with the Davis magnetic tube. The binary intergrowths of magnetite and the silicate minerals (mostly actinolite) are the most common type of mineral association discovered. The significant characteristics in the intergrowths of magnetite and actinolite are the fine-grained magnetite inclusions in actinolite which may end up increasing the SiO2 grade in the magnetite concentrate despite magnetic separation.

"Radioactive minerals are found together with the more familiar ore minerals in veins, gossans, and pegmatites, Since they have a peculiar property, that of giving off penetrating radiation, the simplest means of field detection is by the use of some radiation detector.The two principal radioactive elements one may encounter are uranium and thorium. These may occur separately or together. At present there is very little demand for thorium and hence radioactive occurrences should be examined with some care to determine which element is present. To do this it may be necessary to have a chemical analysis made of samples from the occurrence. Uranium minerals that do not carry appreciable thorium have a conventional occurrence in quartz or carbonate veins. They are distinctive in appearance. Pitchblende, the principal ore, is hard, black, and very heavy. It weathers readily to soft, powdery minerals •brilliantly coloured orange, yellow, and sometimes green. It may be associated with familiar minerals such _as native silver, nickel-cobalt sulphides and arsenides, chalcopyrite, and hematite.It is the purpose of this paper to review very briefly the types of radiation detectors available .and to draw some general conclusions as to the types most suitable for particular applications.The highly penetrating gamma radiation is the most useful for detection of radioactive mineralization. The alpha rays have little or no penetration, and beta rays are stopped by thicknesses of a millimeter or so of material. We shall confine our remarks principally to those instruments intended to detect gamma radiation. These are of three types."

MINING literature contains very few descriptions of operations producing as little as 25 to 30 tons of ore per day. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the gradual development of a mining method for such a small-scale operation at the No. 2 mine of Central Patricia Gold Mines, Limited, and in doing so to review several systems of stoping applicable to narrow ve1ns. MAIN ECONOMIC FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED (1) Overhead.-The outstanding feature of most mines operating on a single narrow vein is chat of small daily tonnage. The reason for this low output can be readily understood. The strictly limited ore-reserves present a condition unfavourable for a policy of large initial expenditures, with the result that the capacity of the plant provided must be governed by the? amount of ore in sight at the time when mill construction is planned. This is immediately reflected in the cost per ton, there being relatively few tons over which to distributed the more or less static charges, such as hoisting, heating, supervision, administration, pre-production expenses, and other write-offs. (2) Development.-In mining this type of orebody, the main factor contributing to high costs is unquestionably the small tonnage of ore made available by a given amount of development. Thus, for example, from the data tabulated below it can be seen chat, assuming a 12-in. vein and a drifting cost of $9.00 per foot, the development charge for this item alone would be 71 cents per ton. Add to this the charges for raising, cross-cutting, shaft-sinking, and pumping, besides charges arising from development in waste, and the figure will be very considerably higher than 71 cents.

T HE APPROACH to maintenance must always be ?completely positive: there must be no question of putting off difficult problems until it is more convenient to tackle them. By this it is meant that a piece of machinery or equipment which, by experience, is known to be due for a check should not, merely because it appears to be operating satisfactorily, be left until it reaches a critical .condition and breaks down. The mentality of the Maintenance Manager must be completely orderly and methodical and he should, in fact, possess a ledger-book mind, having a debit and credit outlook. The debit side would be that applying to time out of service, cost in wages, material, personnel involved, etc., and the credit side that relating to continuous operational time of the locomotive and therefore to the ultimate benefit of the mine and the personnel who work there. The Maintenance Manager is not concerned with design problems, and although he and the personnel under his jurisdiction are not engaged in productive work, he and his staff do, nevertheless, add greatly to or detract from the overall efficiency of the organization. Provided the machinery placed in his care is good to start with, he must take the best steps he possibly can to keep it running. However, he may, on occasion, be forced to improvise and this is where the ingenuity of a clever man rises to the occasion.

The BIOX® culture, aiding liberation of arsenopyrite/pyrite occluded gold, is inhibited by thiocyanate (SCN > 1 mg/L); precluding the recycling of tailings water up-stream of the bioleaching circuit. The activated sludge tailings effluent remediation (ASTERTM) process is a biological process that was developed to facilitate water recovery and treat waste water on-site (to achieve a SCN concentration < 1 mg/L) to be recycled or disposed of. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of changing temperature and SCN loading on the SCN degradation ability of the mixed microbial population clue to seasonal temperature changes and fluctuations of SCN concentration in the waste water.

"Throughout the years Cyanamid has been a supplier of cyanide and a supplier of information to the mining industry. In general, the knowledge of mineralogy is greatly overlooked. Mineral deposits in the Western hemisphere have been exceedingly rich in the past but now they are becoming poorer. In other words, we will have to use our talents to the utmost to extract the precious metals and base metals from these ores. Modifications of some of the mineralogical equipment displayed here belong in the mill.Cyanidation of copper has been one of the main projects in our labs in recent years. De-rimming or de-filming of copper in order to upgrade copper concentrate was the main aspect investigated. A study was made as to how wide spread was the filming of secondary copper on pyrite, and to what extent it affected the copper industry. It was very wide.Often there is no conception as to what the minerals are. One open pit copper producer with a chalcopyrite ore was producing a copper concentrate with a 5% copper value whereas chalcopyrite contains 35% copper. They used primary and secondary grinding and a regrinding section. The ore contained about 8 parts chalcopyrite to one part of other copper minerals. In tests, a 3 1/ 2% copper rougher concentrate, cleaned without regrinding but conditioned with cyanide for a low contact time of 30 seconds produced a 30% copper concentrate with 90% recovery by removal of the film. It was of utmost importance that some quantitative mineralogical analysis be made before flow sheet changes were made. Every man should be trained to do his own microscopic examination in order to get quick answers. The fundamental thing in all mineral dressing is to first of all know the minerals and the mineral associations."
