When the Hedley Mascot mill was built in 1935, it was designed as a straight flotation plant. The ore to be treated at that time was a gold ore in which the gold was intimately associated with arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite in highly silicified and garnetized limestone gangue. This material was ground to 85 per cent minus 325 mesh in two-stage grinding and floated in standard flotation cells to produce about a 5-ounce concentrate, which was shipped to Tacoma smelter for refining. This arrangement gave us a recovery of about 89 per cent. Test work indicated that the best way to improve this recovery would be to build a cyanide plant to treat our flotation middling. Arrangements for the construction of this plant were finally approved and work on it was started in the spring of 1940. This plant was of the conventional type in which the flotation middlings were thickened, filtered, and then put through the usual cyanide process. Its capacity was 50 tons of middlings per day. This arrangement worked quite satisfactorily and gave us an increase in overall recovery of 4 per cent. Unfortunately, about the time the plant was completed, we developed, and started to ship to the mill, ore that differed entirely from that met with up to that time. Instead of being hard, it was very soft, the orebody from which- it came being much faulted and brecciated. In many sections, the sulphides were oxidized and the breccia was filled in with a very soft, hydrous iron silicate known as chloropal. When this new ore was mixed with the old ore and sent to the mill, the whole operation was disrupted. The chloropal slimed so badly that the classification, flotation circuits, and cyanide plant would not handle it. The difficulty in the cyanide plant was at the head end, where the 10 ft. by 20 ft. thickener and the 8 ft. by 8ft. drum filter would not handle the middlings containing a large percentage of primary slime and chloropal. This material would not thicken to more than 30 per cent solids in the thickener and, when pumped to the filter, would forma very thin, slimy cake. Overall recovery dropped to between 83 and 84 percent and it was quite apparent that some extensive changes would have to be made in our flow-sheet before this ore could be treated successfully.

"Methane emission and the desorption characteristics of vertical borehole coal samples of Greenhills multiple seams in the vicinity of Elkford, British Columbia were investigated. Three vertical boreholes at depths of 335 m, 380 m and 395 m were drilled along the west wall of an active open pit mine and 44 core samples from various coal seams were obtained for desorption studies.The results are presented in three tables and illustrated with six figures. The methane content was found to increase significantly at depths greater than 200 m. The adsorption equation by Kim and the properties of the coal have been used to predict the methane content and these were compared with the measured values by the direct method.IntroductionThe coalification of plant material in the sedimentary rock produces different ranks of co al and gases of various composition. The gas mixtures are retained in coal beds and rock strata under pressure. The gas content in a coal bed varies considerably depending on the rank of coal and the depth of overburden. The gas content is defined as the volume of gases adsorbed in a unit weight of coal materials. The net amount of gases remaining in a coal seam depends on the difference in the rate of generation of methane by geo-thermal heat and the rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal bed through sedimentary cover. The major factor that causes the change in rank and the liberation of gases is the temperature, which is governed by the thermal conductivity of sedimentary cover and the heat flux through the underlying rocks. The rate of diffusion of the gases out of the coal is governed by the porosity of the overlying rocks and the degree of fracture. The measured values of gas content in major North American coal beds are from zero up to 24 cm3 per gram of coal(1,2). A gas content of 2.5 to 9 cm3/g is considered ""gassy"" and that of 9 cm3/g or higher is considered ""very gassy"" for underground mining(3). Normally, the gas mixtures released from bituminous coal in Canada contain 90 to 98% methane and the remainder is made up of CO2, N2, 02, H2, He and other hydrocarbons(4)."

"Abstract -The distribution of mineralized provinces is analyzed on the basis of their genetic link with specific blocks of the earth's crust including ancient platforms, mobile belts and zones of tectonic­ magmatic activation. Mobile and fold belts surround the Siberian platform in Russia and the Kaapvaal craton in South Africa, with decreasing age zoning away from ancient platform margins. The main differences in the geological development of the two cratonic areas are: (1) the long period before the final stabilization of the Siberian platform (3600 Ma to 1600 Ma) and the comparatively short period of time for the stabilization of the Kaapvaal craton (3600 Ma to 3050 Ma) and (2) the intensive multiple activation of the marginal zones of the Siberian platform and the tectonically­ controlled, magmatic sedimentary, intracratonic activity, typical of the Kaapvaal craton. Mineralization of the Siberian platform is largely characterized by marginal reactivation zones of differing ages although mineralized intracratonic Cu-bearing basins of Proterozoic age are also known. Mineralization of the Kaapvaal craton is mainly related to the formation of the intracratonic basins i.e., Witwatersrand (Au, U) and Transvaal (Au). The latter is characterized by multi-age volcanic-intrusive activity including the emplacement of Bushveld Complex (Cu, Ni, Pt, Cr, Au, V). The Siberian platform is characterized by the prolonged development of inherited mineralization from Archean until the late Mesozoic. The main period of mineralization in the Kaapvaal craton is restricted to the middle Proterozoic.The Baykal-Patomskaya and Namaqua-Natal mobile zones occupy similar positions adjacent to the Siberian and Kaapvaal cratons, respectively, and demonstrate similar modes of metallogenic development: i.e., the early formation of exhalative Pb-Zn-Cu deposits during the early stage and magmatic Cu deposits during the late stage. The more remote mobile belt near the Siberian plat­ form, the Trans-Baykal, is characterized by intensive multi-age mineralization (Wo, Mo, Sn, fluorite), related to a period of tectonic-magmatic activation. The Saldania Belt occupies a similar position near the Kaapvaal craton but is known for its poor Au, and Cu rnineralization. lt does, however, have some similarities with Trans-Baykal Belt in regard to Mo-W bearing granitoids.The phenomenon of interference of geosynclinal, orogenic, platform, and tectono-magmatic activation regimes is known for the Russian section of the Pacific Ocean Volcanic Belt."

The technology to selectively leach gold, silver and base metals from ores, concentrates, and wastes, using an alkaline glycine solution, has initiated significant interest in using the new technology in various environments such as in-situ, in-place, dump, heap, and vat and agitated tank leaching. It has been shown that glycine acts synergistically with a number of other lixiviants to lower the net consumption of the other lixiviants while allowing low cost glycine solution recovery. Glycine is a non-toxic, stable, environmentally benign reagent that is available in bulk industrial quantities. It has the ability to dissolve most copper oxide and sulfide minerals, as well as native copper, whilst not interacting with acid consuming gangue nor dissolving iron and various or ubiquitous gangue elements. It acts synergistically with small amounts of cyanide to leach gold-copper ores at leach rates higher than either glycine or cyanide on their own, while significantly reducing cyanide consumption and eliminating detoxification requirements. The leaching behaviour of various glycine based systems will be reviewed, followed by the evaluation of the adsorption of gold onto activated carbon. Where the economics merit it, copper can be easily recovered using solvent extraction or sulfide precipitation.

THE SULLIVAN MINE The Sullivan mine of the Consolidated Mining and ? Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, is situated at Kimberley, B.C., nineteen miles from Cranbrook, a divisional point on the Crowsnest Pass branch of the Canadian Pacific railway. Production started on a small scale in 1900, and in 1914 the mine became the largest lead producer in Canada. In 1925 it was the largest single producer of lead and zinc in the world. Since operations commenced, 4,800,000 tons of ore have been produced from stopes and 170,000 tons from development. At the present time, ore is being mined at the rate of 1,100,000 tons per year, with a yield of about 200,000 lb. lead, 110,000 lb. zinc, and 4,000,000 oz. silver. The town of Kimberley is easily accessible by road as well as by rail. The altitude at Mark creek, a tributary of the St. Mary's river, is 3,700 feet. To th'e north of the creek, Sullivan hill rises to a height of 6,100 feet, and it is on the southern slope of this hill that the mine is located. Sullivan hill is in the Purcell range, which rises between the Rocky Mountain trench on the east and Kootenay lake on the west. It thus lies within what is commonly referred to as the East Kootenay district.

Black Thor chromite ore from the Ring of Fire deposit in Northern Ontario was carbothermically reduced in a microwave system to produce a ferrochromium alloy. The as-received ore contained 43.0% Cr2O3, 19.9% Fe2O3, 14.5% MgO, 13.4% Al2O3, and 7.0% SiO2. Activated charcoal was utilized as the reducing agent. Firstly, TGA/DTA and permittivity studies were carried out in order to determine the relationship between the reduction process and the microwave susceptibility. Secondly, microwave reduction experiments were performed on the chromite ore. The variables investigated were; the amount of carbon, processing time, input power and type of atmosphere. A maximum chromium grade of 76.1% and a chromium metallization of 82.7% were obtained for a processing time of 20 minutes, a power input of 800 W, and a carbon addition of 15% in an argon atmosphere.

"THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H. "Rare earth elements (REEs) have a series of specific properties making them invaluable in products including lighting, electronics and magnetism. The elements have been used in many commercial products, for example, turbines, electric vehicles, batteries, lighting, computers, cell phones and lasers. Heavy REEs are attracting the interests of scientists from many countries, and these elements have become critical to develop high-tech materials. Ion-adsorbed rare earth deposits were first discovered in China. The minerals are also called weathered crust elution-deposited rare earths. The particular types of deposits are distributed throughout southern China. The ion-adsorbed deposits are rich in medium and heavy REEs, accounting for more than 80% of the world’s total medium and heavy REEs production. However, the separation of heavy REEs from ion-adsorbed deposit is difficult owing to their similar chemical properties. The conventional separating technologies have caused serious pollution. A novel extraction strategy has been developed in this laboratory and is presented herein.INTRODUCTIONThe unique properties of rare earth elements (REEs) render them important in high-strength magnets, lighting phosphors, polishing compounds, and ceramics. Especially for applications that take advantage of the f-orbital electrons, substitutions outside the REE family are often difficult to impossible (Nassar, Du, & Graedel, 2015). Extracting and separating individual elements from mined ore is not easy, requiring lengthy operations to separate them, and this results in high costs and adverse effects on the environment. The low concentration of REE in the earth’s crust makes economic exploitation difficult (de Boer & Lammertsma, 2013) and the sustainability of the REEs separation industry has aroused considerable attention (McLellan, Corder, Golev, & Ali, 2014). To eliminate protons and break the dimmers in organic phosphonic acids or carboxylic acids, the saponification of acidic extractants by acid-base neutralization reactions are widely used in industrial REEs separation (Sun, Luo, & Dai, 2012a). The saponification procedure contributes to increased extractability and selectivity of acidic extractants to a considerable extent. The common industrial saponification mechanisms and technological processes are shown in Figure 1 and include ammonium saponification (saponified by NH3·H2O), sodium saponification (saponified by NaOH), calcium saponification (saponified by Ca(OH)2), and magnesium saponification (saponified by MgO). These inevitably result in wastewaters containing NH4 +, Na+, Ca2+ or Mg2+ because of the cation-exchange extraction mechanisms (Xiao, Long, Huang, Feng, Cui, & Wang, 2013; Song, Fu, Wang, Liu, Zhou, & Li, 2014; Sun & Waters, 2014)."

In order that a logical conclusion may be reached regarding the possible occurrence of commercial iron deposits in Canada it is necessary to consider some important producers found elsewhere on this continent. A study of such deposits reveals the fact tl:~at a number of distinct types are producing large tonnages of ore. These types may be classified according to origin and occurrence as follows: (1) Bedded sedimentary deposits. (2) Contact metamorphic deposits. (3) Residual ores. (4) Lenses in metamorphic rocks and m some cases of uncertain origin. In addition to the types listed there are other deposits which have contained or do contain considerable ore and they either have not been worked on a large scale or they have been nearly exhausted. These include the following types: (1) Magmatic segregations. These are mostly titaniferous magnetites. (2) Dikes of magnetite of igneous origin. (3) Bog and lake ores in glacial drift. (4) Black sand placers.

STEEL ROPE WIRE is one of the more specialized commodities among the many grades of highcarbon steel wires. In its production there are many metallurgical aspects of interest from the steelmaking on through the final stages of wire drawing. We produce rope wire in an integrated mill com prising all the operations from the blast furnaces to finished wire drawing in the wire mills. Steelmaking is carried out with close control on hot metal, selection of scrap, and fluxing materials. The basic open hearths are of 170 tons capacity. Steel is teemed into 19 1/2 in by 19 1/2 in big-end-down molds and is hot-topped with the use of clay refractory hot-tops. The weight of this ingot is 6,900 pounds. All high -carbon steel ingots are charged hot into the soaking pits and are then rolled through the blooming mill in 16 p asses to a bloom ax~ in. by 41/2 in. and approximately 65 feet long. Necessary bottom and top crops are taken on the bloom as it passes from the blooming? mill to the billet mill. The still hot bloom is continuously rolled through the billet mill in . 5 passes to a 2 3/8 in. square. Billets are cut to 32 feet in length by a flying shear and then allowed to cool on the hot bed.

THE Geological Survey was created in 1842 to aid the development of Canada's mineral resources. Although the institution has been in existence for nearly 100 years and has accomplished an immense amount of work, the need for its services remains as great as ever and, indeed, it is difficult to imagine a time when the country will no longer require a Geological Survey. This is so because of the tremendous effort required to make an adequate geological examination of so large an area as is embraced by Canada and partly because what today may seem an adequate geological examination proves, later on, to be inadequate. The ultimate objective of the Geological Survey is to complete the study of all phases of the geology of Canada, that is, to determine how and when the physical features originated, how and when the soils and other unconsolidated deposits were formed, and how and when the solid rocks and associated deposits were produced and assumed their present conditions. When the study has been completed, any only then, will it be possible to make a reliable estimate of the country's mineral resources. This appraisal embraces more than determining the value of already discovered deposits: it also involves attempting to establish what kinds of undiscovered deposits may be present and where they may occur. The estimating of the potential mineral wealth can be clone only after the geology of the country is known. Not until then will it be possible to forecast what types of valued deposits may occur in a district and what types will almost certainly be lacking. A thorough knowledge of the geology of the country is desirable not only to permit estimating the potential mineral resources but also as an aid in locating and developing mineral deposits whether these are of the nature of a bed of limestone, a seam of coal, a reservoir of petroleum, a vein, an irregular body of sulphides, or any other type of deposit.

The Mount Wright iron are mine and upgrading plant were brought on line in the fall of 1975. The mine is located near the Quebec - Labrador border some six hundred miles northeast of Montreal. This paper describes the crushing, grinding and concentrating facilities at Mount Wright, and some design: criteria used in equipment selection and flow sheet design. Also mentioned are some "asbuilt" modifications. A brief description of the over-all flowsheet is also included. Introduction IN SEPTEMBER 1970, the Quebec Cartier Mining Company started development of the Mount Wright iron ore mine. The estimated are reserve is in excess of 1,000,000 ,000 long tons of concentrates, with an average crude are grade of 31.5% Fe. The run-of-mine ore is crushed, ground and concentrated to a product having 66% Fe and 5% silica at an annual concentrate production r ate of 18.4 million long tons. The daily production rate of over 50,000 long tons of concentrate necessitates a daily mine output of approximately 250,000 long tons of material, of which 50% is waste.

"Rare earth elements are becoming increasingly in demand, due to their prevalence in both renewable energy devices and high-end electronics. The characterization of the composition, morphology and volume fraction of the various phases that have valuable rare earths in the ores are needed to find the optimal industrial process to extract the ores containing the rare earths. Rare earth-bearing minerals contain many elements with the M-and L-lines overlap, requiring a high degree of resolution, pushing the boundaries of scanning electron microscopy quantitative analysis. Enhanced microscopy at a high spatial resolution with improved x-ray quantitative analysis enables the accurate determination of the distribution of the desired rare earths in various mineral phases. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements are becoming increasingly in demand, due to their prevalence in both renewable energy devices and high-end electronics. From batteries (lanthanum and cerium), to magnets (dysprosium and neodymium) and lighting (yttrium), the rare earth elements are crucial to the advancement of technology, and to energy saving devices (Crow, 2011). The goal of this project is to characterize the composition, morphology and volume fraction of the various phases that have valuable rare earths in the ores in order to estimate the economical VALUES (of the ores and to find the optimal industrial process to extract the ores containing the rare earths. High spatial resolution imaging and x-ray microanalysis are needed to reach this goal. In this work, the results obtained with a cold-field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and a silicon drift detector (SDD) energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) detector at low accelerating voltage are compared to experimental conditions typically used with electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) instrument.With this improvement, a detailed scientific analysis of the composition of these, and other, ores will become possible with a SEM/EDS system. This will help to better understand how such ores were formed, hence assisting in finding them, and to better understand how to process them in preparation for high end industrial applications, namely through mineral processing."

Those connected with mining, prospecting, or mining geology in northern Ontario are familiar with the fact that it is a comparatively unusual thing to have assayed a sample for which the assay report shows no gold. Values of 20 cents to 80 cents per ton, or even higher, are extremely common. Whilst contamination by fluxes, faulty manipulation, or a desire, on the part of the assayer, to sugar-coat the pill for the client, may account for 20 to 40 cent values at times, it is un1ikely that they would a1ways do so. Exonerating the assayer from being necessarily at fault, what can be the cause of such a widespread distribution of gold (and silver) in minute quantities- of a dissemination .that, in the writer's experience, and so far as he is? aware, is not met with on a simi1ar scale in other parts of the world? Explanations that suggest themselves are, that the dissemination is due: 1. To a very widespread auriferous minera1ization, post-dating (epigenetic) the formation of the rocks in which it occurs. 2. To a general syngenetic distribution of gold in the volcanic rocks of Keewatin age that form so large a part of the sections of northern Ontario that have been prospected.

"Coniaurum Mines, Limited, hold nineteen claims in Tisdale township, in the Porcupine district, adjoining the McIntyre mine on the east. They extend for over a mile along the strike of the Hollinger-McIntyre 'break'. The property has been explored extensively along the ore zone both laterally and vertically. Workings have been carried to a depth of 5,500 feet, and nearly 50 miles of lateral workings (drifting and cross-cutting) have been driven to date in development and in gaining access to the orebodies.Production started at the Coniaurum in June 1928 and has continued without interruption. To the end of 1946 the plant has treated 2,695,725 tons of ore, yielding gold having a value of $21,989,918.The Coniaurum is controlled by Ventures Limited of Toronto. "Certain northern Saskatchewan uranium ores have a high content of nickel and cobalt which offer the potential for recovery as a by-product to uranium. A nickel/cobalt recovery process has been developed as a viable method of recovering a marketable concentrate from typical uranium raffinate solution.Impurities are first removed from the raffinate and the pure solution is then treated with sodium carbonate to recover a bulk nickel/cobalt carbonate precipitate for sale to a primary nickel producer. All contaminants of concern are removed to very low levels and the product is free of radioactive contamination with gamma emissions significantly below natural background. Cost estimates have shown that installation of a nickel/cobalt recovery circuit within a uranium process plant is economically feasible.The testwork that led up to the selected process is described along with recommendations for further investigations such as additional testing of hydroxide precipitation as a possible viable alternative to carbonate. The selected process is described and project economics are briefly reviewed.PROCESS TEST PROGRAMBackgroundExtensive metallurgical research has been performed over the years to develop a process for recovering uranium from the Midwest deposit in northern Saskatchewan. During the course of this research, a certain amount of information became available which suggested that recovery of nickel and cobalt from uranium raffinate could be economically feasible. It was decided to undertake a test program which would investigate methods of separating nickel and cobalt from radioactive and other metal contamination to permit production of a saleable product.Available technology suggested that three general approaches could be taken to recover nickel and cobalt. The first and simplest approach would be to selectively precipitate the impurities of concern, primarily arsenic, iron and radium, and then recover a bulk concentrate from the purified raffinate. The second approach would be to purify the raffinate and then remove cobalt from solution by solvent extraction producing pure nickel and cobalt solutions for further treatment. The third approach would be to precipitate all metals from solution and then selectively re-dissolve nickel and cobalt in ammoniac solution which would be further treated by solvent extraction for nickel recovery, leaving cobalt for further treatment."

"The property of Perron Gold Mines, Limited, lies in the southwest corner of Pascalis township, northwestern Quebec. It is approximately 12 miles northeast of the town of Val d'Or.This ground was originally staked by Jack Mathews of Amos in the spring of 1931. Shortly after staking, a quartz vein containing visible gold was uncovered on the south boundary of the property, about 400 feet south of the present shaft. With further prospecting, another spectacular goldbearing vein was found 3,000 feet northwest of the original showing. Subsequently, several programmes of exploration were carried out in search of the main ore zone. By 1933 sufficient ore was outlined to warrant sinking a shaft. The first ore was milled in 1934.Total production from the Perron mine from commencement in 1935 to 1944 has been 317,900 oz. gold having a value of $11,935,106. The average recovery a ton for 1944 was $9.01."

"We all know that every man who works for us should have a thorough knowledge and understanding of his responsibilities. But how about ourselves? Du we have a thorough knowledge and understanding of our own responsibilities as Mill Superintendents?I once had an occasion to say to a Manager that I did not know something was my responsibility and he replied with suitable emphasis ""Everything inside those four walls is your responsibility"". That makes the extent of our responsibilities clear but does not give us a check list to keep an eye on as we do our job from day to day.What are our responsibilities? I suggest they are the following:1. Developing and maintaining efficient operating and maintenance crews.2. Milling the required tonnage.3. Recovering the economical maximum amount of gold.4. Keeping costs at the economical minimum.5. Seeing that the figures are reasonably accurate for tonnages, assays, production, losses, and costs.6. Preventing accidents.7. Preventing fires.8. Maintaining the equipment and building and keeping them clean and tidy.9. Enforcing company rules and regulations."

Control of arsenic in the Potrerillos' Refinery electrolyte has been obtained by withdrawing a bleed stream of circulating electrolyte and ensuring the ratio of [O]/[As] in the cast anodes is maintained between 0.9 and 1.0. In order to achieve this control the anode oxygen must be adjusted, depending on the arsenic level in the cast anodes. It has been necessary to modify the time of the reduction step in the anode furnace refining process. Control of this ratio has permitted electro refining of anodes with high levels of arsenic, up to 3000 ppm, while minimizing the volume of electrolyte that must be removed for impurity control so as not to affect the copper concentration in the electrolyte. However this control strategy is not useful when the arsenic concentration in the cast anode is too high, because it is limited by the maximum oxygen concentration allowable for a good quality anodic. Costs have been reduced in anode furnace refining because it is no longer necessary to use alkaline flux injection to remove the arsenic in cast anodes.
