"Discrete-element method (DEM) modelling is a powerful tool for studying particulate systems within the mineral processing industry. DEM simulations were conducted to investigate the power draw, load behaviour, and impact energy profile of an experimental ball mill under different milling conditions. The variables considered were mill rotational speed (percent critical speed), ball size, and lifter face angle. The simulation results indicated that the grinding efficiency would be enhanced by using 80% critical speed, 30 mm ball diameter, and 45° lifter face angle. These findings can be useful in guiding actual ball milling tests involving an ore sample.RÉSUMÉ La modélisation par méthode des éléments distincts (MED) est un outil puissant qui permet d’étudier les systèmes particulaires au sein de l’industrie de traitement des minerais. Des simulations par MED ont été menées de façon à étudier le profil de la consommation énergétique, du comportement de la charge et de l’énergie de rupture d’un broyeur à boulets expérimental dans diverses conditions de broyage. Parmi les variables prises en compte figuraient la vitesse de rotation du broyeur (vitesse critique en pourcentage), la taille des boulets et l’angle de coupe de la cornière élévatrice. D’après les résultats de la simulation, on pourrait améliorer l’efficacité de broyage en utilisant une vitesse critique de 80 %, un diamètre de boulet de 30 mm et un angle de coupe de 45 ° de la cornière élévatrice. Ces résultats peuvent se révéler utiles pour les essais concrets de broyage à boulets impliquant un échantillon de minerai."

The climatic area in which Poland is located requires heating the ventilation air at intake shafts during the winter season. Air heating of the intake shaft should ensure safe operation of hoisting devices; while at the same time it also affects the conditions of the mine environment. The paper presents the issues of shaft heating in coal mines in terms of the mining law, the effect on the conditions of the mine environment and heating technology solutions used in the mines of Kompania Weglowa S.A. (KWSA).

Ion Exchange (IX) using Strong Base Anion Exchange (SBA) resins is conventionally used to purify uranium from sulfuric acid pregnant leach solutions (PLS), particularly when uranium grades are relatively low. However, the presence of chloride in the PLS interferes negatively with conventional SBA based IX processes, by reducing the uranium loading on the resin. Chloride can be present in the PLS due to the use of saline bore or seawater in leaching, or chloride containing leach/IX reagents. ANSTO has been examining strategies to combat this problem for several years. ANSTO previously reported that a recently developed high-capacity SBA resin was capable of extracting uranium efficiently from saline leach liquors produced at Boss Resources’ Honeymoon in-situ recovery mine in South Australia. The resin was tested successfully in a 2017 Field Leach Trial carried out onsite in the existing wellfield area. While the piloting was extremely promising, the elution was more challenging, with eluate tenors limited to 2 g/L U3O8 using NaCl. This is due to the resin’s strong affinity for the uranium complex, which makes it difficult to elute efficiently by standard methods. In this paper, we describe a novel elution process developed for strong base resins that significantly improves upon conventional methods. The process, developed by ANSTO, is based upon conversion of the extracted uranyl sulfate species to uranyl carbonate, followed by elution with sodium chloride. The loading and elution process was demonstrated in continuous locked-cycle piloting conducted at ANSTO in 2019. The results were excellent, with eluate tenors of 8–9 g/L U3O8 achieved from Honeymoon PLS containing 50 mg/L U3O8, with very little transfer of impurities. In subsequent test work, the eluate was shown to be amenable to uranium peroxide precipitation. The results represent a huge step forward for the purification of uranium from saline leach liquors.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of Ascorbic (C6H8O6) Acid (AA), Activated Carbon (AC) and Guar Meal (C6H12O6) (GM) as a reductant for the simultaneous complete dissolution of zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn) from a spent and mixed Zinc-Carbon (Zn-C) and alkaline battery powders in sulphuric acid (H2SO4) leaching. AA was tested previously as a reductant by other researchers while AC and GM were tested as a reductant for the first time in battery recycling. The effects of H2SO4 concentration, AA/AC/GM dosages, reaction temperature and leaching time on the Zn and Mn dissolutions were investigated according to 2k full factorial experimental design and Central Composite Design (CCD) technique; then, a simple optimization study was carried out for comparing the reductants. The optimum reductive acid leaching conditions for AA were determined at 3 hours leaching time, 70°C leaching temperature, 0.5M H2SO4 concentration, 13 g/L AA dosage, 1/20 g/mL solid/liquid (S/L) ratio and 200 rpm stirring speed. Under these conditions, the dissolution efficiencies were 99.9% for Zn and 99.3% for Mn. The best reductive acid leaching conditions for AC were determined at 3h leaching time, 80oC leaching temperature, 1M H2SO4 concentration, 3 g/L AC dosage and 400 rpm mixing speed. Under above conditions, Zn and Mn dissolutions were not complete. At 2M H2SO4 concentration, 10 g GM dosage, 700C leaching temperature, 200 rpm stirring speed, 1/20 g/mL solid/liquid (S/L) ratio and 3 hours leaching time, full dissolution of both Zn and Mn was achieved. As a result, three different reductants were evaluated in this study for complete simultaneous Zn and Mn dissolutions. This paper also compared present test results with previous spent battery recycling studies for Zn and Mn dissolutions. Full valuable metals dissolutions from spent batteries were achieved at low H2SO4 concentrations with AA and high concentrations with GM. Selective precipitations of Zn and Mn from acid solutions were carried out using NaOH and KOH. Using 3M NaOH as precipitating agent at room temperature and at pH 8; 95.4% of Zn and at pH 10; 93.7% of Mn were precipitated from the leach solution. Under the same conditions, using 3 M KOH at pH 8; 91.6% of Zn and at pH 10, 96.4% of Mn were precipitated. Based on the experimental results obtained, an appropriate flow sheet was proposed to recover both Zn and Mn.

Preliminary bench-scale studies were carried out on the leaching of a zinc sulphide concentrate from Somincor, Portugal, and the purification of the resulting pregnant solution using solvent extraction techniques. The sulphide concentrate contained 36% Zn, 36% S, 2% Fe and 4% Cu. The leaching was carried out with sulphuric acid in the presence of ferric sulphate as the oxidant. Important leaching parameters, such as the effect of reaction time, the solid-liquid ratio, temperature and concentrations of acid and oxidant, were investigated. After leaching, the recovered solution was contacted with an organic phase containing Acorga 5640 to remove the copper. Subsequently, the removal of iron from the leaching solution was achieved with a mixture of Cyanex 272 and TBP. This solvent mixture was relatively selective for iron over zinc. The stripping of the loaded solvent was performed with 200 g/L H2SO4. Six countercurrent extraction stages achieved a separation of about 99% of the iron from the leaching solution. The iron-free leachate can be further treated to recover minor metals by cementation, and finally, zinc by liquid-liquid extraction. The advantages of the suggested process relative to the traditional jarosite process are discussed.

The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company has been in the business of mining and exploration since its incorporation in 1906. The Company has reports written as early as 1890. Consequently, its files contain a very large number of reports, and also of maps, of ail descriptions. REPORTS Before describing the filing of maps, a brie{ note on our general system of filing reports will perhaps clarify the discussion. Reports of a non-periodic nature, primarily those based upon examinations by field engineers, are separated from all other data and filed in what we know as the Mine Series System. Each property on which reports are written is given a serial number, known as the Mine Series Number. This serial number is assigned at the time the first report is filed and it remains permanently identified with the property, regardless of its state of activity. Our mine series numbers now total over 5,000. The serial number for a property may be found by referring to an alphabetical index of properties. "An initial test of this unique application demonstrated that hot gunned refractory would adhere satisfactorily. Subsequently, it was found that the proportion of material sticking during application increased with increased vessel temperature and when a mix containing pitch was used. About 75 per cent of the latter type adhered when it was applied at 1600°C.TBRC availability increased from an historical average of 62.5 per cent to 64.7 per cent during four campaigns when hot gunning was routinely practiced. Refractory cost was about 20 per cent less than that anticipated without gunning. Average parameters per campaign with gunning ranged as follows: 90 to 108 heats, 10 to 37 applications and 1.4 to 2. 7 hours per application. Prior to gunning, the average number of heats per campaign was 73.IntroductionThe Top Blown Rotary Converter process at Inco's Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery converts copper-nickel-sulphur concentrates to a material suitable for carbonyl refining (1),(2).Operating conditions are particularly hard on refractory. Batch cycles finish at temperatures up to 1650°C, with occasional excursions over 1700°C. New heats are then usually initiated immediately and the refractory is subjected to intense thermal shock from the cold feed. Temperature cycles are also introduced three to four times during a heat when the process is interrupted for scrap charging, temperature measurement or sampling.Abrasion wear results from rotation of the converters at speeds up to 15 RPM and from agitation of the bath with supersonic-velocity oxygen. Mechanical damage also occurs when chunks of scrap or solid matte are processed. Chemical corrosion is also present, as we know from our own laboratory work(2) and reports of operations elsewhere. As a consequence, refractory material and installation form a very large proportion of the converter plant costs. Equally important is the loss of converter availability during rebricking; this significantly reduces plant capacity."

The rheology artificial mixtures of bitumen with fine quartz of varying bitumen content, as well as actual oil sand ores, was investigated under different physicochemical conditions (pH, temperature). All rheological measurements were conducted using a Haake Rotovisco VT550 rotational viscometer, connected to a fixture specifically designed to measure properties of settling suspensions. It was found that at low bitumen contents (1 %, wt.) the pH of the slurries was the most important parameter that controlled the rheology of quartz-bitumen slurries. At higher bitumen contents (10%, wt.), it was a combination of high temperature and high pH that gave the lowest apparent viscosities and yield stresses of the model mixtures. These model observations correlated well with the rheology data obtained for slurries of actual oil sand ores. The overall results were discussed in terms of aggregation-dispersion phenomena between bitumen and mineral particles.

An innovative mixed-chloride process for the separation of iron from lateritic ore is described. The separation of Fe(III) from leach liquor is an important process step for the recovery of nickel and cobalt. The patented process of Process Research ORTECH Inc. uses a lixiviant containing hydrochloric acid (HCl) and magnesium chloride (MgCl2) for the leaching of lateritic ores/concentrates followed by the selective solvent extraction step of Fe(III) over other value metals such as Ni and Co. The use of MgCl2 increases the activity of the hydrogen ion in the lixiviant, which reduces the consumption of HCl in the leaching stage and enhances the formation of HFeCl4-, thereby increasing the solvent extraction efficiency of Fe(III) with ketone. The process produces high purity iron oxide (Fe2O3) and regenerates HCl by the pyrohydrolysis of the FeCl3 rich pregnant strip solution. The developed process flowsheet is in closed loop, economically attractive and environmentally friendly.

The elastic-plastic behavior and the fracture mechanisms of two 2198 Al-Cu-Li thin sheets are investigated. The first material (2 mm thick) is in a recrystallized state after cold rolling. The second material (6 mm thick) is hot rolled and has a fibrous grain structure. The two materials are studied in both T351 and T851 conditions. Tensile tests are carried out along different sheet directions using flat and notched specimens. Fracture resistance was characterized using Kahn tear specimens and M(T) panels. Macroscopic fracture surface of smooth tensile specimens depends not only on testing material but also on the loading direction. For Kahn tear specimens, fracture is initiated in a small flat triangle whereas slant fracture is observed during crack propagation. Fracture mechanisms were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray 3D tomography.

In the metal casting industry an improvement of component quality mainly depends on better control over the production parameters. Thus, thermal analysis cooling curve of the alloy is used for process control in aluminum casting industry. Cooling rates of the alloy during solidification process affect microstructure, grain size, eutectic silicon morphology, and dendrite arm spacing (DAS). In this research, effect of cooling rate on the microstructure and solidification parameters of 319 aluminum alloy that is a widely used alloy in automotive industry, has been investigated by means of thermal analysis. Seven different cooling rates have been obtained by using CO2-bonded silica sand molds with two different wall thicknesses, hot-work tool steel molds (H13) with and without coating, thin-wall steel molds with different coatings. In each case, cooling curve and first derivative cooling curve have been plotted by use of very accurate thermal analysis equipment. Effect of different cooling rates on solidification parameters e.g. Nucleation temperature (TN,a), nucleation undercooling (ATN,a), recalescence temperature (TR,a), solidification range (AT,s), and total solidification time (t 0 have been studied in the liquidus region. Microstructural evaluation has been carried out and DAS were measured in all solidification conditions. A numerical equation was proposed to predict cooling rates via measuring DAS in 319 aluminum alloy. Nucleation process and the effect of cooling rate have been interpreted by using thermal analysis cooling curves and microstructural study.

This paper presents the results of theoretical and technological studies on leaching ore of Bozshakol deposit. The major oxidized copper mineral of Bozshakol ore is atacamite, and the content of malachite, azurite, cuprite, copper sulfide minerals is insignificant. The chemical composition of the test sample, with mass, %: 0.9 Cu; 55.00 SiO2; 22.40 AI2O3; 9.00 Fe2O3; 2.24 CaO; 3.56 MgO. Technological studies on leaching the ore were carried out with sulfuric acid 5, 15, 25 and 50 g/dm3 in one and multistage (up to 4 stages) countercurrents. Size of ore 1 mm, the ratio S : L 1: 4. It was found that with increasing of acid concentration from 5 to 50 at one-mode leaching the copper extraction reaches 55 %. At multistage leaching the copper recovery reaches 73 %, a productive solution containing g/dm3: Cu - 4; Fe – 1.2; Al – 1.1 at a pH of 2.8. When leaching the cinders obtained by ore roasting in an atmosphere with limited value of oxygen, with increasing of the roasting temperature from 650 up to 750 °? the extraction of copper from the Bozshakol ores reduced from 31.5% down to 24.4%. The rate of filtration is markedly increased compared with the crude ore. When leaching the cinders obtained by roasting in a nitrogen atmosphere a marked increase up to 87.2-88 % of copper extraction from Bozshakol ores is observed. As an extractant for the extraction of copper from the pregnant solution used LIX984N extractant in kerosene. On the basis of the calculations it was built extraction isotherm and modeled processes of copper recovery with the circuit 2E + 1P, allowing up to 93 and 96% extraction. The through extraction of copper from the ore in the electrolyte was 67 %. Technology is recommended for semi test.

"As the demand of raw materials increases in a global scale due to demographic and economical changes, it is necessary to find technological solutions that improve current production processes in an efficient and sustainable manner. The main objective of this preliminary study is to evaluate the properties of foam produced with a cellulose-based molecule as an alterative to commercial frothing agents in flotation operations. There are two potential advantages identified with the use of cellulose-based additives for the proposed application: i) these chemicals can be produced from sustainable sources (i.e., non-edible crops), and ii) cellulose can be functionalized with chemical groups, in order to rationally modify its behaviour. In previous studies dealing with foam stabilization, it has been proposed that some functionalized cellulose species present a self-assembly mechanism at gas-liquid interfaces. Unlike typical surfactant-based frothers, cellulose molecules form networks around the bubbles that act as protective layers to the mechanical stress and to the occurrence of ionic species. This work studied the properties of foams produced in the presence of a partially hydroxylated cellulose molecule (i.e., hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose; HPMC) under various concentrations in a laboratory-scale column. A comparison with a commercial surfactant frother (i.e., Nasfroth 240) is presented, and a rationalization of the behaviour of HPMC in terms of foam properties (i.e., surface tension, bubble size, foam depth) is proposed. INTRODUCTIONThe search for green alternatives to chemicals produced from non-renewable sources has become a topic of major relevance in industry (Choi et al., 2015). As a chemical consuming industry, the mining sector faces now the challenge of adopting new processing technologies and strategies in order to achieve the future demands of sustainability. Evidently, a move towards green chemistry can only take place by identifying substitute molecules offering potential advantages in terms of recovery and grade."

"The Report outlines the Conversion to Rubber Mill Liners and steel grinding balls from the old style Cobalt pocket liners and flint pebbles which had been used in 5'x22' Fraser-Chalmers tube mills for over fifty years. An outline of the past history and some of the plant modifications are mentioned as well.The details pertaining to considerations, modifications and repairs carried out on the mills are described. Factors influencing the rubber liner design are outlined along with the description of the rubber liner design.The performance and advantages to date are given and concludes with brief summary.HISTORYThe original amalgamation-cyanidation mill of Dome Mines Limited went into operation in 1912. Milling has been continuous since 1912, except for two periods; one of 17 months commencing in December 1917, and the other of about 12 months, when fire destroyed the plant in November 1929. Initially the capacity of the mill was 350 tons a day. In 1916 it was raised to 750 tons a day, following which there was a gradual expansion to 1,500 tons a day."

"The influence of annealing of galvanized steel (galvannealing) on its corrosion kinetics in a saturated solution of Ca (OH)2 has been studied by means of the polarization resistance method.Galvannealing heat treatment was carried out at 450°C and 550°C for varying times. Annealing at 450°C for 24 hr or at 550°C for 5 hr showed the highest corrosion potential (Ecorr) ~= - 400 m V/ SCE as well as, the lowest corrosion current density (icorr ~= 3 mA.cm-2, while Ecorr and icorr of the unheated specimens were ~= - 1400m V/SCE and == 20 mA.cm-2, respectively.Polarization curves were also obtained for the as-received galvanized specimens together with the galvannealed ones.INTRODUCTIONHeat treatment of galvanized steel (i.e . galvannealing) is carried out at a temperature range of 450°C to 550°C for a time sufficient to convert the free zinc coating to an alloyed one consisting of layers of iron-zinc intermetallic compounds. Table I is a review of the properties of the Fe-Zn intermetallicphases while Figure I is a reproduction - of the Fe-Zn equilibrium phase diagram taken from Hansen.Several authors have studied the formation of intermetallic phases through the interdiffusion of Zn/Fe couples. Their results confirmed the stability of intermetallic phases that could be shown up on the outer surface as a result of galvannealing of galvanized steel.Bernick and Sievertv"" investigated the processing of galvan nealed steel. They found that the galvannealed coating with the best forming qualities consisted of a mixture of Zeta phase and Eta phase."

The Ni-rich Epidote Zone of the Fraser Mine at Sudbury is characterized by alteration assemblages rich in epidote, actinolite and magnetite which are roughly concentrically zoned and up to hundreds of meters in length. These zones form discrete areas within the igneous Footwall Breccia below the Sudbury Igneous Complex. The assemblages grade from epidotized Footwall Breccia matrix,through actinolite-bearing rocks with few vestiges of original Footwall Breccia textures, into the most intensely altered rock, a magnetite-rich facies. Pentlandite, pyrrhotite and pyrite are the dominant sulfdeminerals; chalcopyrite is minor. The strongest geochemical differences compared to original Footwall Breccia occur where epidote and actinolite dominate the alteration assemblage (EPDZact facies). The most intense alteration facies are typifed by low Cu/(Cu+Ni) values of <0.1. Strong positive correlations exist between Ni and Co, Cu and Au, and among Ir, Os, Ru and Rh. Chondrite-normalized Ni - PGE -Au - Cu plots display an overall increase in all elements from the least to the most intensely altered facies except for Au and Cu. As the proportion of actinolite increases in the EPDZact facies, the chondrite-normalized profles fatten considerably due to low Au and Cu contents. Abundances of Ni, Ir, Ru and Rhalmost ubiquitously increase with degree of alteration. In contrast, Cu, Zn, Ag and Au contents are low in almost all facies. It is suggested that saline hydrothermal fluids moved through the Epidote Zone formation and became more oxidized as they reacted with the Footwall Breccia and with footwall units, including ultramafic rocks. As this trend continued, magnetite-rich zones eventually developed. The occurrence of calcite locally in these magnetite-rich zones suggests that the pH of the fluid increased, causing Cu solubility to drop as activity in the hydrothermal system waned. Sudden changes in fluid composition such as this may have been due to an influx of fluid from bounding ultramafic rocks. Hydrothermal activity was focused along the margins of footwall ultramafic units. Individual hydrother-mal cells may have formed in the Footwall Breccia along pre-existing structures or sulfde concentrations. Metals may have been scavenged from sulfide-bearing Footwall Breccia and possibly Sublayer rocks. Nickel and some PGE were deposited in the Epidote Zone, whereas Cu, Au and Ag continued out-ward into the footwall where they were deposited as Cu-rich footwall veins. THE purpose of this paper is to discuss the use of the dip needle in the field of mining geology. The subject matter is new only to the extent that it reflects the writer&apos; s added experience in recent years. The treatment is brief, and those interested in a more extended analysis are referred to the articles listed at the end of the paper. In the discovery and tracing of mineral deposits, the clip needle, like most other geophysical instruments, can be used in two ways. One method may be termed direct; the other, indirect. The direct method is that of finding or following certain ore-bodies by virtue of their magnetic properties. Explicitly, or by inference, it is the method which many mining men and practising geophysicists have in mind when they consider whether or not a certain property should be studied by geophysical means. In the ideal case, this method demands little or no knowledge of geological conditions. The indirect method uses the clip needle as an aid to purely geological studies in working out the structure of a mineralized area. Although not as simple as the direct method, it enjoys a much wider field of usefulness. The writer&apos;s experience in the past fifteen years, which is believed to be typical, is that the indirect method finds application four or five times as often as the direct method. The indirect method is of particular value because it furnishes information concerning the relationship between geological structure and ore occurrence. Most mining engineers will agree that structural control is an important factor in the localization of ore deposits, and therefore that the subject under consideration is of some interest in mining geology. Specifically, then, the present purpose is to outline the principles and practice of using the clip needle in working? out geological structure.

"The correlation obtained by plotting pH of maximum adsorption of dextrin versus the isoelectric point of involved metal hydroxides can be used to predict the depressing effect of dextrin on flotation in ""pure"" sulfide mineral systems. Sulfides are strongly depressed by dextrin whenever their surfaces are coated by the corresponding metal hydroxide. The efficiency of dextrin as a depressant is affected by the adsorption of the sulfhydryl collector. Hydrolyzable cations modify this relationship in flotation of sulfide ores. This type of deviation of the real-life systems from the predictions based on the behavior of the pure systems shows the possible ways that could be followed to further improve the obtained correlations.
