The aim of this work was to prepare the metallic coatings on 316L stainless steel dental implant and evaluate the corrosion characteristics and thus the biocompatibility of the uncoated and metallic coated dental implants and comparison of the effect of the type of coatings on biocompatibility. Three types of metallic coatings including Tantalum, Niobium, and Titanium coatings were made using physical vapor deposition process on 316L stainless steel dental implant. Structural characterization techniques including; X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis were utilized to investigate the microstructure and morphology of the coatings. Electrochemical potentiodynamic tests were performed in two types of physiological solutions at 37±1 °C in order to determine and compare the corrosion characteristics. All three types of metallic coatings had a positive effect on improvement of the corrosion behavior so that the coatings could increase the corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel and this trend was independent to the type of physiological environment. Biocompatible metallic coatings could decrease the corrosion current density that is a distinct advantage for prevention of ion release. This can improve the biocompatibility of the implant and, consequently prevention of tissue damages, inflammation and irritation and obtained desirable histopathological response.

Daily production scheduling in a highly dynamic smelter environment has always been a great challenge for the operation management due to a significant amount of uncertainties. Planned and unexpected equipment failures, various energy outages, inaccuracies in flow and mass balancing, manpower availability conflicts and other constraints make the job of daily production planning exceptionally difficult. This paper discusses a general scheduling approach utilized by the production management of the Phelps Dodge Miami Smelter (the Smelter). It also describes logical assumptions and some practical software solutions that have been exploited by the Smelter managers to assist the front line supervisors in dealing with daily planning activities for several years.

"IntroductionTHE GIANT YELLOWKNIFE property is on the west side of Yellowknife bay, Great Slave lake, N.W.T., some 600 air miles north of Edmonton. This paper deals with the underground development and mining of the complex system of orebodies which have produced, in the first fifty-six months of operation (May, 1948, to December, 1952), 652,464 tons of ore with an average grade of 0.80 ounces of •gold per ton (1).The mine has been developed from three vertical shafts designated A, B, and C. Figure l shows the positions of these openings with respect to the known ore-bearing zones and the surface plant.A shaft was sunk to a depth of 522 feet in 1945-46, primarily as a prospect shaft for investigation and development of the East Zone orebody. Drifting was carried out on the 200-and 325-foot levels. Before this development had been completed it was clear that the funds immediately available made it imperative to get revenue from production as soon as possible. By the beginning of 1946, the remarkably high-grade character of the ore in the present B Shaft area had been established by surface drilling, and the decision was made to obtain initial production from this source. Since known orebodies at shallow horizons were to be developed quickly, the choice of a suitable rock outcrop for the shaft was something of a problem."

"The Logtung deposit discovered in 1976, is an example of large tonnage (162 million tonnes), low grade (0.13% WO3 and 0.052% MoS;) W(scheelite)-Mo mineralization related to multiple felsic intrusions. Because mineralization is predominantly fracture-controlled (> 95 %) rather than disseminated, Log tung is not a skarn deposit. Metamorphism of the Logtung country rocks (interbedded calcareous shale and graphitic quartizite) to a series of competent reaction skarns (quartz-diopside-garnet calc-silicate, biotite quartzite and wollastonite-vesuvianite calc-silicate) clearly precedes W-Mo mineralization. Hence mineralization was related to permeability created by hydraulic fracturing and not replacement processes.Logtung shows a theme of several phases of mineralization (4) related to multiple intrusions (>2) which is similar to that of the Climax and Urad-Henderson Mo systems. The earliest quartzmolybdoscheelite vein system, which consists of a typical ""porphyrystyle"" crackle-breccia of thin (0.5 mm to 4 mm) quartz-garnetdiopside- molybdoscheelite veins, is related to a high Si02 (approx. 76%), seriate-porphyritic monzogranite stock (approx. 2 km by 0.5 to 1 km) of Cretaceous age (118 ±2 Ma [2u]; Stewart, 1983). Later quartz-pyrite scheelite (fluorite-KINa-feldspars-molybdenite) veins, with prominent green, hornblende-bearing alteration selvages, and quartz-molybdenite (-pyrite-jluorite-scheelite) veins are related to a quartz-feldspar-spessartine-rich garnet porphyritic felsic dike complex approximately 500 m across. Both intrusive phases have anomalously high Wand Mo concentrations of about 100 ppm and 50 ppm respectively, which Stewart (1983) attributes to a primary enrichment. The final stage of mineralization consists of a prominent 4.5 km by 1 km zone of 1 em to 1 m wide polymetallic sheeted veins centred on the felsic dike complex. The system is zoned from quartz scheelite-molybdenite-pyrite-blue-green beryl-jluoritebismuthinite veins in the core to Pb-Zn-Ag veins with abundant arsenopyrite and minor Sn (approx. 0.1%) in the northeast. The focus of recurrent intrusive and hydrothermal activity was located above a flank or nose of the monzogranite stock.The distribution of WO3 and MoS2 grades within the approximately 750 m (across) by 300m (evaluation depth) mineralized zone is a result of the variable superimposition of the four separate vein systems each with different W:Mo ratios. Well-defined Wand Mo ore, shells such as those at Climax, Henderson and Mt. Emmons did not develop at Logtung. The upper surface of the mineralized zone, as shown by the 0.03% MoS2 contour defines an elongate dome with an apical region approximately coincident with the felsic dike complex. Hydrothermal alteration occurs as well-defined vein selvages, and not as pervasive zones.The Logtung deposit shows many similarities to porphyry Mo deposits in the western Cordillera and may be identified as a porphyry W(scheelite)-Mo deposit, with a W:·Mo ratio of 3.3:1. The principal reasons are: (1) mineralization is spatially associated with porphyritic granitic intrusions and (2) much of the scheelite and molybdenite occurs in typical ""porphyry-style"" vein stockworks"

Kimber/ires are intrusive rocks whose main constituenr, olivine, has been altered entirely or almosr enrirely ro serpentine. Texture usually is porphyritic, superimposed upon a brecciared one. Diamonds are found only in kimberlites, and are present in economic quantities only in about I% of all kimberlites known. Two glacial drift diamonds, one near Peterborough and one near Timmins, both in Ontario, have been found in Canada and are believed to have been eroded and rransporred from their original source by glaciers. Many more glacial drift diamonds have been found sourh of rhe Great Lakes in the United States, parricularly in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin . There are nine known kimberlire occurrences in Canada. Diamonds have been located in rwo of rhem: on lie Bizard near Monrreal and on Somerset Island in the Northwesr Terrirories. The lie Bizard occurrence comprises three kimberlire diarremes; samples of rhe largest one revealed JO riny diamonds totalling 0.0537 carars. The Somerset Island kimberlites are rhe mosr significant yet discovered in Canada. Ar leasr 19 separare kimberlite occurrences are known on rhe island. Testing by Diapros Canada Lim ired, however, revealed only "a few small diamonds". fr is likely rhar, wirh enough time and funds, additional kimberlires, possibly bearing economic quanriries of diamonds, will be found in Canada.

AUTHENTIC records show that coal mining in Cape Breton dates from the year 1720, when the French military authorities obtained coal from what is now known as the Blockhouse seam, in the Morien district, for use at Louisburg, where the fortress, now of such historic interest, was being built. Thereafter, coal was mined more or less continuously, and although, for many years, in a very haphazard way, there was, on the whole, a steady growth towards a better regulation of the industry, culminating in the year 1825 with the arrival of the General Mining Association in Nova Scotia. This Company, more generally known as the G.M.A., had acquired extensive tracts in Brazil and Colombia and had also purchased the mining rights for the whole of Nova Scotia-excepting such areas as had been previously leased-the attraction being the rich veins of copper currently reported as occurring in the Province. These fabulous copper veins, upon examination, failed to materialize, but the engineer sent out to report on them returned with such good accounts of the coalfields he had seen that steps were taken immediately to investigate them. From that rime onward, the history of coal mining in Nova Scotia is one of progress and achievement. One of the first acts of the G.M.A. was to acquire the areas already leased to other concerns and develop these in a masterly fashion, employing the best machinery and talent available at that time. Such dominant control over the minerals of the Province, although it led to orderly development in the several coalfields, also, later on, resulted in restricting operations in the various coal centres to such an extent that a determined effort was put forward by the people of Nova Scotia to end such a state of affairs. Consequently, in 1857, the original lease of the G.M.A. was abrogated, the Company, however, being allowed to retain certain areas in the districts it had already developed. This opened the way for the formation of other coal-mining companies, and numbers of these immediately sprang into existence in the various coal-mining centres. In 1893, the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, was formed by the amalgamation of seven companies operating in the neighbourhood of Glace Bay, in Cape Breton. Later, in 1910, the Dominion Iron & Steel Company, Limited, obtained control of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Company, which had been formed in 1884 to acquire the rights of the two companies working in the Cumberland County coalfield.

"The Eastern Abitibi Sub province (Quebec segment), contains two main types of gold deposits: the common quartz-vein type and the rare pyritic type. Both occur in areas dominated by volcanic rocks and are spatially associated with major fault zones.Quartz-vein gold deposits consist of simple to complex networks of quartz-carbonate-pyrite veins in reverse shear zones and extensional fractures. They occur in areas dominated by mafic volcanic rocks and are commonly associated with small syn- to late-tectonic porphyritic felsic intrusions. Associated alteration, which postdates peak metamorphism, is dominated by carbonatization, sericitization and pyritization of the wallrocks. These deposits formed late in the geologicalevolution of the Abitibi.Pyritic gold deposits range from deformed massive sulphide lenses to zones of syntectonic pyrite-rich veinlets and associated pyrite disseminations. These deposits occur in environments dominated by felsic volcanic rocks that are typically converted to sericite schists near the deposits. The associated pre-metamorphic aluminous alteration is now characterized by metamorphic sericite, andalusite, kyanite and chloritoid, overprinted by a late retrogression of alumino- silicates. These deposits probably represent deformed volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits, but the timing of gold introduction in these is not fully understood.The differences in geological attributes reflect significant differences in the genesis these deposits: the pyritic deposits probably have a multistage genesis, including a pre-tectonic stage, in contrast to a single stage late-tectonic genesis for the quartz-vein deposits.RESUMELa partie Est de la Sous-Province de l’Abitibi( segment québécois) renferme deux types de gites d' or: ceux de type ""veine de quartz"" et ceux, plus rares, de type ""pyriteux"". Ces deux types se trouvent dans des secteurs particulièrement riches en roches volcaniques et mantrent une association spatiale avec des zones de failles majeures.Les gites de type ""veine de quartz"" correspondent à des réseaux de complexité variable de veines de quartz-carbonate-pyrite se développant dans des zones de cisaillement inverse et des fractures de tension. Ils se concentrent dans les régions dominées par des roches volcaniques mafiques et s’associent fréquemment à de petites intrusions porphyriques felsiques syn- a tardi-tectoniques. L’altération associée ace type de glte est postérieure à la phase majeure du métamorphisme et consiste en une carbonatisation, une sericitisation et une pyritisation des épontes. La mise en place de ces gites est tardive par rapport à l'évolution géologique de l'Abitibi.Les gites d' or de type pyriteux consistent en des lentilles de sulfures massifs déformes, des zones d' abondantes veinules pyrite uses syntectoniques, et des zones de pyrite disséminée. Ces gites se retrouvent dans des empilements contenant surtout des roches volcaniques felsiques qui sont transformées en schiste à séricine pres des gisements. L’altération a l’umineuse pre-metamorphique associée a ce type de glte a donné naissance, lors du metamorphisme regional, a la sericite, a 'andal ousite, a Ia lcyanite et au chloritoi""de; par la suite, les alumino-silicates ont été affectes par une alteration retrograde tardive. "Cast in place concrete shaft linings have been used in many salt and potash shafts sunk in North America over the last 100 years. A large number of these shafts have exceeded their initial design lives and as producers look to extend the life of their operational assets, maintenance costs and shaft downtime will, in many cases, continue to rise unless repair work is undertaken. Successfully implementing concrete liner repair schemes in operating salt and potash shafts is complicated due to their age, environment and time constraints during inspection, detailed design and construction. This paper outlines a general approach to the repair of concrete-lined portions of these shafts, based on lessons learned from the authors’ involvement in a recent repair project. INTRODUCTION Prior to the recent boom in potash mine construction many of North America’s potash mine shafts were entering their sixth continuous decade of production (Table 1). Of North America’s salt mines, one has been in continuous production, for nearly nine decades.As would be expected, considering the environment in which these liners operate and the age of the material, the concrete-lined sections of the shafts outlined in Table 1 have been noted by the authors to have lost both cross-sectional thickness and strength over time. Since construction, three principal factors have contributed to this loss in section/strength; (1) physical degradation (impact, freeze/thaw or rebar expansion), (2) chemical degradation from brine/water inflows (Neville 1969; Bothwell, 1972) and (3) overstressing of the liner. These factors may act in combination, in which case they can produce more significant distress than individually. Physical degradation There are three main causes of physical degradation of concrete shaft liners. The first is impact from falling debris/tools or equipment (whether large or small), which may damage specific sections of concrete lining as they fall through the shaft. Impacts tend to damage infrastructure fixed to the shaft liner more than the liner itself, so damage from this mode of failure is usually localised, for example, where bolts fixing a shaft services bracket to the wall have been pulled away, pulling out the concrete around the bolts with them."

"This paper examines the application of blasthole sloping to narrow vein mining in Canada, for ore deposits where widths are less than two metres. While the technique has now been utilized for more than ten years, it remains in the experimental stage and on-site testing is necessary for its adoption at new mining operations or in differ¬ent geological settings. It is intrinsically a safer method than other narrow vein methods in current use.The investigation describes the main operating parameters for mines recently surveyed. The criteria for method applicability are defined and the problems encountered are studied. It is concluded that blasthole sloping for narrow vein mining is a viable modern method which promises to gain popularity and that emerging fragmentation technology and blasting research can be used to further increase applicability of the stoping method."

It is the purpose of this paper to present an initial report on the construction and operation of the Fluo-Solid roaster at the property of Campbell Red Lake Mines, Ltd., Balmertown, Ontario. The roaster prepares for subsequent cyanidation the bulk flotation concentrate obtained from four hundred tons per day of gold ore. The mill flow-sheet 'includes jigging and amalgamation; flotation; cyanidation of flotation tailing; and roasting followed by cyanidaition of flotation concentrate plus amalgamation tailing. Overall mill recovery for the year 1950 was 90.2 per cent. Recovery possible by straight cyanidation of this ore would not exceed 80 per cent. The ore contains considerable arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite as well as pyrite, with lesser quantities of nickel, zinc, and copper minerals. The mineralization is for the most part extremely fine. The roaster first went into operation on August 7th, 1949, and at the end of 1950 it had roasted 10,916 tons of concentrate. The average recovery of gold from calcine during that period was 94.86 per cent in the primary stage of calcine cyanidation. The average assay of calcine residue from primary cyanidation for the entire period was 0.37 oz. per ton. Both laboratory tests and plant metallurgical balance calculations indicate a further recovery of approximately 10 per cent of this 0.37 oz. when the calcine residue is again cyanided, in the flotation tailing cyanidation circuit.

Part 1.- Metal Mines Early experiments with mechanical loaders in metal mines were confined largely to machines of the shovelling type and generally air-operated. Although the first application of the scraper to metal mines dates back to 1910, it was not until about twelve years ago that it came to be used extensively. Generally, the scraper gives better results in metal mines than in coal mines, as degradation due to soft bottom and breakage are not factors, but it has a wide range of application and is successfully used in the mining of salt, potash, gypsum, zinc, copper, and a variety of ores, from soft material to hard chunky ore which settles compactly. Today, the scraper has replaced to a large extent the shovelling type of machine in metal mines. Scrapers have offered an inexpensive solution for the mucking problem and are now employed in most mining districts throughout the world. They are operated by labourers of all colours and degrees of skill. Each installation, however, requires individual study on the part of the mine mechanical department to determine the type of scraper, horsepower of hoist, and most economical speed of rope, as well as method of rope rigging. Unfortunately, the scraper has no power to select pay ore from waste and its suitability for use under circumstances which might require sorting of the ore can only be decided by a weighing of the economic factors involved

The effect of sulfuric acid concentration on the extractions of arsenic and copper in the catalyzed batch leaching of an enargite concentrate was studied. The acid concentrations studied were 60, 45, 30 and 15 g/L. The experimental series yields maximum copper extractions of 96 to 98% in an interval of 81 - 185 h leaching time for 60 - 15 g/L initial sulfuric acid concentration; all the copper extractions plateaued after these values; the rates and plateaus of copper extraction are increased with higher acid concentrations. Arsenic extractions reached maximum values of 89% in 57 hours, 57% in 49 hours, 33% in 25 hours, and 25% in 112 hours respectively; these maximum values were followed by a steep decrease in arsenic concentration, which indicates a precipitation event occurs in the process. According to the literature and process conditions, the arsenic precipitates obtained are iron arsenates similar to scorodite. The stability of the residues was tested using the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) from EPA; the residues for the four concentration levels passed the TCLP test, reporting arsenic leaching values below 1 mg/L.

"Early in mine development at Quintette Coal Limited major problems were encountered with the fleets of primary equipment which seriously hampered production. These major fleets (cable shovels, hydraulic shovels, hydraulic drills and electric trucks) have consequently been the focal point of maintenance efforts. Some were prototypes in the Canadian mining scene and brought with them new concerns to test their skills. The problems were studied and the category and areas which were having the greatest impact on the reliability of the equipment were determined. Once defined, priorities were established and a program was initiated which was designed to accomplish a resolution. Resulting from implementation of this systematic approach, over the past three and one-half years, the fleets are now giving good reliability and industry standard availabilities. Along with these significant achievements, cost per operating hour on some of the equipment fleets has decreased substantially and continue a downtrend through 1987. This paper identifies the problems and describes the resolutions. IntroductionIn the early years of the mine development, Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) experienced production shortfalls due to problems with the major excavator and haulage fleets. A large fleet of hydraulic excavators had been purchased, and QCL was among the first northern users of all hydraulic blasthole drills. They were also using some prototype equipment and encountered problems which were not common on other types of equipment or were unknown.Because of these unique problems and lack of experience from other mines to draw on, an analytical approach was taken to areas and associated causes of the delays affecting the availability and reliability of equipment. This was done by dividing the equipment downtime into seven classifications of delays, i.e. maintenance, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, damage, service and preventative maintenance, and tires; and then each was expressed as a percentage of total downtime. Subsequently each of the delay classification was divided into categories e.g. electrical to six categories - wheel motors, main alternator, relays, cards, no propel, lighting and 24 V system. Then, the basis for further study had been established.From this preliminary analysis of historic records, it was possible to determine the areas which were causing the majority of the downtime. These areas were then analyzed to evaluate causes and to determine possible solutions to the problem s. This paper addresses the major fleets, their problems and eventual solutions. Plea se bear in mind that the over-all objectives were to increase physical availability and reliability."

Introduction The increasing importance of the gypsum industry in Canada is evidenced by the fact that the production has increased from 473,129 tons valued at $809,632 in 1909 to 1,205,846 tons valued at $3,622,007 in 1928, an increase of over 155 percent in quantity, and of 347 percent in value, in the 20-year period. Although the export trade in crude gypsum still forms a large proportion of the industry, it is gratifying to see that the home consumption is steadily increasing, and while the percentage of the crude gypsum mined that is manufactured into the calcined products in the country is only 16.8 per cent, its value is practically 50 per cent of the total gypsum production of the whole country. It is to be hoped that each succeeding year will see an increase in the amount manufactured in Canada, and, with the steady growth of the country and a serious endeavour to capture a part at least of the world market in gypsum products, the outlook for the industry is decidedly promising. The value of gypsum as a commercial commodity has been known from the time of the early Egyptians; in fact its value for certain purposes has been known so long chat the date of the discovery of its peculiar properties is unrecorded.

This paper presents a discussion of the factors affecting copper scrap markets, including such items as price levels, freight. grades of material, sources and packaging. Reference will also be made to the effective life and turn-around of the copper content of some products. Introduction IN TERMS OF SIZE, copper scrap is second only to ferrous scrap in tonnage recycled. However, in total value, it is second to none. For example, world scrap recovery during the preceding 4 years averaged just under 2,300,000 metric tons per annum, and at an average price of 70 ¢ a pound, this works out at a turnover of about $3.5 billion, which indicates that the copper scrap industry, or recycling as it is now becoming known , is a substantial one.

The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health-Spokane Research Laboratory (NIOSH-SRL) have developed a Shaft Conveyance Monitoring System (SCMS). Assessment of current hoisting technology has shown that monitoring wire rope tension and conveyance position and load directly from the skip or cage top offers several significant safety, production, and maintenance advantages. The SCMS consists of conveyance position and guide displacement sensors, a battery power supply and charging system, and a new sensor to measure hoist rope tension. This device provides a warning of the occurrence of ?slack rope? a particularly dangerous condition. A 2.4 GHz radio link transmits data to the hoistroom. A reduced scale hoisting test facility has been constructed to test these components prior to field trials. The advantages of monitoring wire rope tension and conveyance position and load directly from a skip or cage top will be discussed. Field tests are underway in full-size shafts to refine the concept and evaluate long-term reliability and maintenance requirements. Application of this technology may result in decreased maintenance costs as well as safer, more productive hoisting operations.

In March 2003, Phelps Dodge started up an innovative pressure leach facility for processing copper concentrates at the Bagdad mine in Arizona. This paper describes the development of the concentrate leaching plant at Bagdad and the operational results from start up to present. Optimization efforts and an approach to mineralogical modeling of the concentrate to calculate oxygen utilization are also presented.

The Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland consists of a Precambrian core of gneisses and granitic rocks, cut by numerous diabase dykes. This complex is surrounded by an envelope of sedimentary rocks of Cambrian to Carboniferous age. Radiometric dates from two granite masses in the core give a mini-mum age of -945 m.y. (Grenville) for the last major tectonic activity. This Grenville deformation conferred upon the core substantially its present structure which has controlled later events to a marked degree. Block movements of the core, dominantly in a vertical sense, have ex-posed it to erosion at intervals. The nature and distribution of the flanking sedimentary rocks and the present relief of the peninsula suggest four such movements. THE Great Northern Peninsula extends some 150 miles north-northeast from the northwest corner of the main body of the island of Newfoundland. It separates the Gulf of St. Lawrence from the Atlantic Ocean, except for the 12 mile wide

It is possible to reproduce the performance of an operating CIP or CIL plant in the laboratory, in small scale batch kinetic tests, coupled with mathematical models that translate kinetic data into predicted steady state gold profiles across multi-stage adsorption circuits. Once the performance of the commercial plant has been mimicked by the model, the plant operating parameters can be varied systematically in the model, and the likely response of the plant to the step wise change can be determined. In this way it is possible to inexpensively optimize the operating conditions of an existing plant, with no disruption to plant operations and no economic risk to the mining company. "Operating costs of mining plants are increasing due to the increased cost of labour, materials and fuels. Labour and materials costs are factors not readily controlled. However, the use of energy from fuels may be controlled by plant operations. This paper describes the fossil fuels, their expected rate of depletion and their costs. The paper considers methods which may be used to provide an efficient use of energy from fuels. It includes an outline of obtaining energy, as heat, from mine milling operations (air compression) and obtaining the maximum use of energy from fuels used to generate electricity."
