The types of equipment available for generating a plasma have been reviewed. The efficiency and potential of the plasma generating equipment used in performing extractive metallurgical reactions have been determined. A general classification of the reactions that might be per-formed in a plasma has been proposed. Experimental work done on extractive metallurgical plasma reactions, heat transfer between the plasma and solids, and the quench of the products of plasma reaction has been summarized. From the preliminary results it appears that the high-intensity are or the transpiration-cooled anode plasma torch offer the most promising areas for further research. C ONSIDERABLE world-wide research effort is currently being devoted to the development of processing technologies which employ the new high-temperature generating devices that have appeared over the past few years. The plasma flames produced by these devices offer the potential for subjecting materials to any single gas or mixture of gases at temperatures up to 20,000°K. "With reference to the chemical constraints underlying the ion exchange process for uranium recovery, a generalized view is presented on the actual and the achievable efficiency of the process. The area considered is restricted to acid leach circuits in combination with nitrate, chloride or sulphuric acid elution.A comparison between actual plant results and the chemical requirements shows that:(a) Unless new and better ion exchange resins are developed, no dramatic change in equipment size and resin inventory is""anticipated. (b) Elution efficiency, especially for sulphuric acid, may be improved considerably. More concentrated eluates may beproduced at lower chemical consumption. A possibility of achieving additional purification solely by ion exchange is discussed.IntroductionThis paper presents a generalized view of the actual and the achievable efficiency of the ion exchange processes for urannium recovery. Therefore, a generalized approach of the ion exchange process inevitably neglects some parameters which maylead to significant variations in apparently identical situations.The uranium concentration in the pregnant solution, together with its pH, are the principal variables which determine resin loading and residence rime in the ion exchange system. On the elution side, the type of eluant and its concentration will determine the contact time required and the amount of eluant needed to strip the resin. The temperature, the properties of the ion exchange resin, the total dissolved solids in the feed solution and the competing ions are other variables that affect the chemical performance; these, however, may be considered as a correction of the principal parameters if one is interested only in general trends."

Recirculation is the major concern associated with the utilization of booster fans. In controlled recirculation, a portion of the return air is purposely mixed with the intake air and the mixture is directed towards a working district, while the air quantity and gas concentrations in the air are closely monitored and managed. The objectives of this study were to determine the gas concentration in intake and return airways during controlled recirculation, and to determine the recirculation fraction for multiple headings. Experiments were conducted in a laboratory model to determine the effect of controlled recirculation on the quality of air circulated through the working faces. Preliminary results showed that recirculation is beneficial to ventilation planning because it reduces the build-up of air contaminants at the working faces and reduces the overall power consumptions. The experimental results were used to quantify the recirculation fraction and to calibrate ventilation models of the laboratory model. These models are used to simulate the controlled recirculation and to predict the gas concentrations in multiple headings.

"The paper identifies two of the main problems encountered in recent hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver: firstly, the plant recovery is lower than anticipated from the testwork; secondly, the metallurgical accounting figures cannot be reconciled.The principal reasons for the plant recovery being lower than the testwork are discussed, together with solutions that can minimize these problems both during the design stage and during the plant operation after the problems have manifest themselves.The reasons for the difficulties in metallurgical accounting are analyzed by reviewing the various components of the plant figures. Recommended solutions are given for minimizing this problem and the realities of obtaining accurate figures are discussed.IntroductionThe start-up over the last few years of new hydrometallurgical plants for the recovery of gold and silver has brought to the surface again a number of problems. Most of the problems have existed for some time and they manifest themselves mainly in two ways. "IntroductionThrough an extensive coal sampling project in the Sydney coalfield of Nova Scotia during 1981 - 1984 involving a majority of the mineable coals (Zodrow, 1985, Fig. 1), a sizeable inventory on trace, minor and major metals was established. In this paper, results of studying the inventory are summarized, concentrating mainly on the relationship that exists between metal variations and thickness of coal channel samples (i.e. trends) and on explaining the trends in geochemical and sedimentological terms. As an over-all conclusion the Everglades peat of Florida is proposed as a modern-day analogue to Upper Carboniferous peat swamp development that took place in the Sydney Basin.Data InventoryFor this study 17 channel samples were cut , 8 cm to 14 cm channel width and 8 cm to 10 cm depth, from 10 successive coals which in stratigraphically descending order are as follows: Point Aconi (3), overrider Lloyd Cove (2), Lloyd Cove (2), Stubbart (2), Harbour (4), Backpit (I), Phalen (,I), Shoemaker (1) and McAulay (I), where bracketed values signify the number of channel samples cut from a seam (Zodrow, 1985, Fig. I). Each channel sample was subdivided by 15 em incremental length yielding a total sample size of 137 for analysis. By appropriate modern techniques these samples were analyzed to determine concentration levels for 32 chemical elements and ash content, the average results of which are presented in Table 1.Tests were also made for Pd, Pt, Ga, Nb, Cd, Cs, Sm and W but their concentration levels in many instances hovered on the lower detection limits that were used and on this accounts are excluded from discussion. Ashing, when necessary for the determination of concentration levels, was done for 12 hours at a temperature not exceeding 450°C. Concentration levels for the elements are reported in reference to whole-coal or whole-coal equivalents and discussed on this basis. In the course of the analyses, lower detection limits received careful attention."

In the Yellowknife geologic province, 2,600-million-year-old granites are cut by three sets of diabase or gabbro dyke : (1) large dykes striking 70°E to E-W, (2) rare dykes striking N-S to 30°E and (3) an abundant swarm striking N 10°-300W. Preliminary potassium-argon dating has been carried out on whole-rock samples of the chilled margins and coarse centers of the dykes, and on mineral separates from the dykes and contact aureoles. Data from seventeen dated samples suggest that the dyke sets were intruded during three periods of basaltic magmatism -2,200, 1,500 and 1000 million years ago. The two earlier periods closely follow the time of emplacement of granites in the Yellowknife and Churchill geologic provinces. The latest diabase dykes occurring in the Yellowknife province are temporally related to a widespread basaltic magmatism, for which the term Keweenawan is not appropriate. "Introduction1N THE FALL of 1951, Peace River Allied Fort St. John No. 1 well was drilled in Lsd. 1, Section 9 Township 83, Range 18, West of the 6th Meridian, on the flats of the north side of Peace river, six miles southeast of the village of Fort St. John, B.C. During this operation, non-commercial shows gas in three zones and of oil in one zone were obtained during the drill-stem tests. Further geological study indicated that this well was on the southeastern edge of the Fort St. St. John structure.Pacific Fort St. John No. 4, drilled shortly afterwards, obtained possible commercial gas flows on drill-stem test in five zones and thus encouraged development of what has become Canada's largest multizone gas field.In general, the productive horizons in this area possess fair per-meabilities and high porosities, a combination which provides for high reserves and moderate productivities. Development to date has therefore stressed experimental techniques in drilling and completion practice to provide high deliverability wells.Data and information of a specific nature apply, in all cases, to the pools in the Fort St. John structure."

The annual production of mineral and mineral-based wastes in Canada is conservatively estimated to be 400 million tons. Over 90 per cent of this amount is waste rock or mill tailings from the mining and mineral processing industry. The remainder are slags and ashes from the metallurgical industry, and sludges from the chemical industry. Because of impurity content, remote location, or both, most wastes have limited usefulness and, indeed, are a liability in that they must be transported to waste disposal sites and contained therein. Certain mineral wastes do, however, have potential value. Some contain small percentages of metals that may be economically recoverable with price increases; others consist of mineral material that may be used for such purposes as road base, construction aggregate, railroad ballast, and in the manufacture of bricks or blocks. Increased interest has been shown in mineral wastes in recent years. This paper reviews the types of mineral wastes available in Canada, briefly describes a number that have potential value, and notes possible uses and related research by CANMET and other organizations.

The impact of these options on capital and operating costs is assessed, and key technical issues reviewed. The discussion is based on the conventional North American ’pancake’ mill configuration. IntroductionDuring the past decade mill technology has evolved significantly in the following key areas:• improvements in variable speed motors continue with on-going advances in electronics;• ring motors, or gearless drives, are becoming more common in mill sizes 32 ft and larger, with ratings of 10 000 HP and greater;• geared drives have become available up to ratings of 9500 HP per pinion, compared to the earlier 6000 HP guideline;• improvements in speed reducer technology due to the use of carburized and ground precision gearing, make the high speed motor-speed reducer drive more competitive with the direct coupled low speed motor drive;• a unique speed reducer drive is being introduced to this industry which combines ring gear drive pinions with speed reduction. mprovement in gear alignment is claimed, and the overall drive arrangement is more compact than is possible with a conventional speed reducer drive;• the first 38 ft and 40 ft diameter mills have been designed and manufactured; and • application of large multi-shoe bearings have made shell supported mill configurations available for all, including the largest sizes. These designs have flat instead of conical mill shell ends, and have the potential for technical and cost advantages compared to conventional trunnion supported designs.This proliferation of mill design features provides several options to those involved in planning and design of milling plants, and requires more extensive evaluation to optimize mill design features to best suit specific project requirements."

"Rare earth elements (REE) are essential and unique components of many high-technology products without which functioning of modern society would be greatly impaired. Commercial deposits of REE are limited to a few geographical locations. Largely untapped sources of REE are available in endof- life (EOL) magnets, rechargeable batteries, and electronics. Presently, < 1% of REE in EOL wastes is recycled. Conversion of EOL wastes to liquid streams allows use of IBC’s Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) process to selectively recover, separate, and purify target REE and associated metals at g/L to mg/L or lower concentration levels. The MRT process together with its applications to separations of REE and associated metals in recycling as well as in mining are described. Economic and environmental advantages of MRT are presented. INTRODUCTIONRare earth elements (REE) include the lanthanide series (La-Lu), Y, and Sc. These elements are not rare, but concentrated minable deposits are scarce (Cordier 2012; Haxel, Hedrick, & Orris, 2002). Over 95 % of the world’s supply of REE is controlled by China (Hanson, 2011a) where they are mined, processed, and the pure elements incorporated into a growing number of consumer and military products. The consumer products are marketed worldwide. Since REE are vitally important in consumer and military products, this situation has caused other nations to scramble to develop the capability to produce their own supply (Cordier, 2012).In the U. S., Molycorp has reopened the Mountain Pass REE mine in California and production has begun (Goldenberg, 2010). Development of a reliable internal source of REE is of high national priority in the U.S. (Hanson, 2011b; Hess, 2012: “Obama Announces”, 2012). These elements have in recent decades been incorporated into new consumer and military products that are essential to our economy and defense. These products range from wind turbines, high performance magnets, hybrid car rechargeable batteries, energy efficient lighting electronics, flat screen televisions, and smart phones to advanced weapons systems (Haxel et al., 2002; Levkowitz & Beauchamp-Mustafaga, 2010)."

"In this study, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity (TC) of shale in two perpendicular directions, vertical and parallel to the bedding of the rock, are firstly measured by experiment. The experimental results show that the CTE of the shale in the vertical direction is 1.69 times as much as that in the parallel direction, while the TC in the parallel direction is 1.83 times larger than that of the vertical direction. Based on the no initial strain assumptions, numerical simulations for the thermal cracking in shale are carried out with the obtained coefficients. Using finite element method and thermal-mechanical coupling theory, two fracture mechanical parameters, KI and J-integral of the shale are also analyzed for the shale thermal fracturing. The simulation results show that both KI and J-integral reach the maximum when the fracturing angle equals to 0° in the shale, namely parallel to the bedding direciton. It is also found that the two fracture parameters decrease with the fracturing angle increasing. Additionally, the thermal fracturing effect of the shale is evaluated under a given scenario. The study is significant for shale oil or gas recovery by in situ pyrolyzing method.INTRODUCTIONOil shale is regarded as a kind of unconventional resource that can contribute to production of shale oil and hydrocarbon gases (Rahm & Dianne, 2011). As is known that there is a large deposit of oil shale in China, and present technology for exploiting oil shale still concentrates on open-pit mining, obtaining shale oil by retorting shale on the ground (Li, Tang, Xue, Zheng, & Du, 2014; Qian, Yin, 2008). However, this technology has a bad effect on the environment and leads to severe resource waste for utilizing oil shale. Exploiting oil shale by in-situ method for ‘green mining’ is widely necessary in China (Kang, Wang, Cao, Liang, Chang, & Liu, 2013; Waters, Dean, Downie, Kerrihard, Austbo, & McPherson, 2009; Zoback, Kohli, Das, & McClure, 2012). One of effective method to exploit shale oil is heating oil shale in-situ underground. For instance, the in-situ conversion process (ICP technique) from Shell Company etc. used a direct heating method, and convectional heating oil shale underground by injecting superheated steam from Mining Technology Institute, Taiyuan University of Technology and constructing horizontal fracture in vertical wellbore from Chevron Company use indirect heating method (Chaudhary, Ehlig, & Wattenbarger, 2011; Hazra, Lee, Economides, & Moridis, 2013; Zhao et al., 2010). The convectional heating method contains complicated procedures with phase transition in double-media of fracture-matrix of oil shale subjected to multi-physical fields coupling including stress, fluid and temperature (Zhao et al., 2010). The characteristics of thermodynamics, solid mechanics and seepage of oil shale have been investigated separately (Hopkins, Rosen, & Hill,1998; Kang, Zhao, & Yang, 2008; Yang, Zhao, Kang, 2010; Zhao, Yang, Feng, Liang, & Kang, 2008; Zhao, Cao, Zhao, Lin, & Wang, 2008). However, it is quite difficult to solve constrained problem of each physical parameter in multi-physical fields coupling for oil shale pyrolysis."

"The Turgeon Lake granite lies 5 miles north of Baie Johan Beetz, Quebec, at the eastern margin of the Grenville Province. The rocks are classed as granites, granulites, quartzites, biotite schists and gneisses, and amphibolites. The granite's uraniferous character is manifested by phosphuranylite, uraninite, and metamict .zircons associated with magnetite. Field anomalies occur in irregular pods, conformable with the tectonic foliation, in bands roughly paralleling sedimentary bedding. Associated features diagnostic of uraniferous granite are smoky quartz, brick-red feldspar, magnetite and a coarse to pegmatitic grain size. The granite is chemically and physically heterogeneous. Metasediment-granite contacts are diffuse or sharp, and usually conformable to bedding. The regional foliations within all rock types are coherent, and sedimentary structures are often preserved within both metasediments and granite. Autometasomatism probably was a strong granitization agent.A uranium reconcentration into fold-axial zones from original sediments which have been highly granitized during at least two phases of folding is suggested from the available data."

A flowsheet has been developed to treat the flotation tailings from a copper mine in Mexico to recover gold and silver by cyanidation and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). The plant will treat ~15,000 t/day of a 60:40 blend of current flotation tailings and the mine’s historic tailings. The tailings also contain a significant amount of cyanide-soluble copper, and the economic viability of the project is strengthened by recovering most of the copper and cyanide associated with this process. The solution and solid phases in the CIP tailings will be separated in a counter current decantation (CCD) circuit and the CCD solution overflow will be treated by a SART Process. Copper precipitates as a salable copper sulphide product in the SART Process and the cyanide that is associated with the copper complex is regenerated as free cyanide. After SART, a portion of the SART product solution will be recycled to leach to reuse the free cyanide, while the remaining solution will be used as wash water in the CCD circuit. Incorporation of the SART Process in the flowsheet allows the CIP circuit to be operated aggressively as a gold plant, which means most of the silver in solution passes through CIP to SART. Silver co-precipitates with copper in SART and is recovered very efficiently with the copper sulphide by-product. Incorporation of SART also allows the leach and CIP circuits to be operated with relatively high levels of free cyanide, which enhances silver leach kinetics and helps keep copper from loading onto the carbon in CIP. The flowsheet was developed in the laboratory and successfully demonstrated in a fully-integrated pilot plant in 2018.

Introduction The apparent commonplace, and prosaic, nature of building-stones, lime, cement, gypsum, and clay products, and many other miscellaneous non-metallic minerals, such as abrasives, barite, diatomite, magnesite, mica, slate, salts, etc., and their everyday appearance and necessary in our lives, has removed much of the glamour, romance, and speculative attractiveness so frequently associated with our gold, silver, lead, zinc, and copper mining ventures. However, it will be readily appreciated, with but a brief study of the thirty-five or more non-metallic minerals and products which are mined, prepared, or are known to occur, in British Columbia, that the &apos;industrial minerals&apos; industry in the Province has an abundance of interesting technical problems, is fraught with speculative possibilities, and, as such, fully deserves much more technical attention than it has hitherro received. The brief notes presented in this paper show, in summary form, the magnitude of the British Columbia industrial and non-metallic mineral industry; outline in synoptically form the principal deposits of non-metallic minerals presently known; and indicate in a general way a few of the possibilities which exist in the Province for the expansion of the industry. For convenience in presentation, the assembled material has been divided into four sections: 1.-Sraristical information 2.-Strucrural non-metallic minerals 3.-Miscellaneous non-metallic minerals 4.-Non-Metallic mineral possibilities in British Columbia 1. -Statistical Information The writer does not propose to dwell at length on the statistical comparisons and deductions which may be drawn from the four tables which have been compiled for this section of the paper, nor is it considered essential, as the figures present a most emphatic story in themselves.

However, separating REEs safely and effectively is a complex and expensive process. This paper presents a review of REE mineral processing technologies, providing an update on current capabilities in REE mineral processing and REE extraction from the major commercially valuable REEbearing minerals such as bastnaesite, monazite, and xenotime, as well as the ion-absorption type of REE deposits.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the extraction, separation and recovery of the indivisible metals of dysprosium and neodymium from permanent magnets scrap leach liquor solutions with meaningful recovery. The present experimental development focused on dysprosium separation from neodymium and recovery by suitable mineral acids. Fundamental studies of the effect of time, pH and extractant concentration on the metal separation were conducted followed by proposal of a mechanism for extraction. Process development included generation of McCabe-Thiele diagrams and counter current extraction (CCE) studies. After loaded organic generation from the CCE process, this was followed by scrubbing studies as well final recovery of dysprosium.

"AbstractSatisfactory mine drilling operations depend on the good performance of the drilling machine, and of what may be called the drill set, i.e., the following four elements: bit, attachment, drill rod, and shank end. The field performances of these four elements in the drill set are analysed and their service lives are compared. The most .common causes of service failure are reviewed and possibilities of increasing service life are discussed.The laboratory methods now employed for the simulated service testing of tungsten carbide bits, conical push-on and threaded .types of attachments, drill rods, and shank ends are described, and some results are discussed. The objectives of the research programme now being carried out •on the above mentioned elements are outlined.A number of mines in British Columbia, northern Ontario, and northern Quebec have been visited, and, with the co-operation of the C.I.M. Branches in these areas, meetings with representatives of the mining and steel industries concerned have been held. AT the Annual General Meeting held in Winnipeg last March, the whole of one of the technical sessions was devoted to a special Symposium on Geological Investigations in Canada, introduced by a paper entitled The Geological Survey (lî which had been specially prepared by Dr. G. A. Young, Chief Geologist of the Survey, and had been published in the February BULLETIN, prior to the meeting. Geologists from each of the provinces contributed to the Symposium, including directing officials of the geological divisions of provincial Departments of Mines, representative geologists from the Universities, and company and consulting geologists. Space, unfortunately, does not permit publication of a complete record of the proceedings,_ or even inclusion of all contributions to the discussion. The following summary, however, gives what is believed to be a fair cross-section of the opinions expressed by representatives from each Province. The Symposium resolved itself largely into a discussion as to how the Geological Survey and the several provincial bureaus or divisions of geology could co-operate most effectively in the important task of carrying out geo-logical investigations, with avoidance of duplication of work and waste of effort, and, so far as broad principles are concerned, there was remarkably close agreement among those participating in the Symposium as to how the various types of investigation should be allocated as between the Federal and Provincial organizations. Briefly, the concensus was that the Geological Survey can render the most effective assistance by conducting reconnaissance investigations, with mapping at 4 miles to one inch, leaving to the provincial organizations the more detailed, and hence more local, studies and mapping at larger scales. There was general agreement that the preparation of base maps, essential to systematic geological investigation, is a service devolving upon the Federal Government.

HISTORY AND LOCATION SEAL HARBOR GOLD MINES, LIMITED, was incorporated in January, 1934, to take over 116 acres of mining lands in the Stormont gold district, Guysboro county, Nova Scotia. The nearby ten-stamp Mulgrave mill was also purchased, and since that time 974 acres of adjoining properties have been secured from the Government by direct lease. The property is served by a motor road and is about two miles from the village of Goldboro, situated on the shore of Isaac&apos;s harbour. The bulk of ?the supplies are brought in by coastal steamer from Halifax, a distance of about 100 miles, since the nearest railway connections are at Antigonish, some 40 miles distant. EARLYY WORK The Seal Harbor properties include the old Partington and Beaver Hat mines. A small tonnage of ore was mined from each and treated on the properties in stamp mills, which were later torn. down . A survey of old records shows that this ore averaged about $8.00 gold per ton. Development work by the present Company was confined to the 100-foot level until February, 1935, but after that rime the incline shaft was deepened to 425 feet and the 300-foot level was explored east and west of the shaft. Six belts of ore were intersected to the west of the shaft. The ore from these belts was hand sorted and the ore portion was put through the 10-stamp Mulgrave mill to defray operating expenses and to serve as a sample of the deposits. The average recovery per ton from this sorted ore was $6.10. Samples of the ore were sent to the testing laboratories of the Mines Branch, at Ottawa, and of Canadian Industries, Limited, at Toronto. Recommendations from both of these authorities were for removal of the coarse gold by concentration and barrel amalgamation, followed by cyanidation of the residue.
