In the mining industry, decisions regarding the type and number of comminution tests to be completed typically rely on geologists? observations and conclusions when studying drill cores. Given that these decisions are based on visual observations, they are essentially approximate and often inaccurate from a comminution viewpoint, causing a sizeable margin of error in estimating characterization test needs. Consequently, companies are often forced to perform more tests than necessary, requiring a significant quantity of material, and accruing significant costs. Recently, a new device, called the Hardness Index Tester (or HIT), was developed, offering users a low cost in-house mechanism for estimating the comminution parameter A*b and the Bond Ball Mill Work Index at any mine site, with potential applications on fragments up to 25 mm from drill core. In late 2016, Agnico Eagle Mines Limited initiated a trial to investigate if having an HIT device installed in a core repository would make it possible to identify the different rock properties more accurately and determine the number and type of comminution tests required. The application of the HIT was not to replace the standard comminution tests, but rather to generate a high number of comminution and geomechanical parameters for the rock mass. Ultimately, the objective would be to determine the uniformity of the rock mass and, therefore, easily distinguish any potentially problematic zones. With this method, the appropriate number of standard tests could be determined, making the HIT not only an excellent complement to the standard laboratory tests, but also an indispensable device for a geometallurgical characterization. This paper presents the results from the HIT trial using samples from the Odyssey Project, which is a Mine Canadian Malartic property.

"After a study on the advantages and disadvantages of flotation column, according to the limitation of ordinary flotation column only is used for a flotation of microgranular minerals, the paper designed a new kind of layered convection coarse particle flotation column.Using a bauxite to test the rationality of the flotation column.The test results show that the new layered convection coarse particle flotation column is feasible.It has certain advantages about coarse particles flotation.INTRODUCTIONFlotation column has many advantages, for example,a simple structure, high efficiency and energy saving, the obvious advantage of fine particles flotation , the index superior and so on. The advantages gradually getting people's recognition. Research of flotation column has been a breakthrough, however, due to it only is used for the flotation of microgranular minerals, and the microgranular mineral particles will lead to a series of problems, and makes the processing cost is increased. Due to increase grinding fineness can save the grinding time and reduce the cost of grinding, also can avoid the disadvantage of fairly granular mineral particles cause a deterioration in the flotation. Progressively more stringent emission limits and advances in regulations and enforcement have made air compliance more difficult for metallurgical facilities. This has historically required improved collection and treatment of stack sources. Fugitive emission reductions are now increasingly required to achieve compliance. Typically small in magnitude, fugitive emissions have a disproportionate impact on ground level concentrations, can be visible to the public and can influence workplace health and safety. Moreover, these emissions are complex, as they are spread over multiple sources, distance and time and are affected by various activities and conditions. As such it is difficult to find, define and monitor these emissions and their impacts. This difficulty translates to the design of emission reduction measures and operational requirements. This paper presents an overview or ‘heuristic’ of fugitive emissions management for compliance in existing operations. This includes aspects such as the impact of regulations on project scope, approaches to developing a comprehensive emission inventory, considerations for solution development and the plant’s role in sustaining compliance once achieved. Case studies are presented to demonstrate how portions of this approach have been applied.

INTRODUCTION A DISTILLATION process offers one of the most effective methods of refining metals. Its use is particularly attractive in the case of reactive metals which are not readily treated by pyrometallurgical or electrolytic methods. The 1ow vapour pressure of most metals severely restricts the applicability of the disti1lation process and only one or two metals may be effectively treated under atmospheric pressure at a reasonable temperature. If operations are carried out under reduced pressure several additional metals may be effectively distilled. Table I shows the vapour pressure of a number of metals together with a value of the free energy of formation of their ?oxides. Zinc and cadmium head the list and for many years? they have .been effectively refined by distillation. Sodium, magnesium, and calcium follow in descending order, and they may be distilled readily in vacuo and with difficulty at atmospheric pressure. Sodium, which is not of great metallurgical interest, is not considered. Magnesium has recently been produced in considerable tonnages by distillation methods ( 3). This paper describes the vacuum distillation of magnesium and calcium, their separation from each other, and their separation from less volatile impurities.

The high temperature hydrochloric acid leaching of titanium slag in the QIT upgraded slag process (UGS) creates a harsh environment for materials of construction. Because of their excellent chemical and heat resistance, furan mortars are a key component in the lining system of the UGS pressure leach reactors. Similar products coming from different manufacturers have however shown unequal performances in service. In some cases, cracking of the brick lining has occurred during curing of the mortar. This study was initiated to investigate the impact of the curing conditions on the properties of carbon filled furan mortars. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess the effects of temperature and exposure to water and HCl solutions on mortar shrinkage and mechanical properties (tensile, compressive and bond strength). Three commercial furan mortars that have been used in the UGS leach reactors were thus characterized. Mortar properties were found to vary significantly among the products tested. Moreover, the curing conditions were shown to have a significant impact on mortar shrinkage and mechanical strength. The experimental findings provide explanations for the unequal performances of the mortars in service and for the problems of brick lining cracking that occurred in the UGS leach reactors. This study demonstrates that excessive mortar shrinkage compromises the integrity of a brick lining system.

The Adra tunnel near Naramata BC experienced a fire in 2010 that burned timber sets within the tunnel and caused severe spalling of rock from the roof and tunnel walls. The nature of the damage is documented and efforts completed to rehabilitate and open a portion of this tunnel to the public are described. The use of shortcrete and rock bolts is a technically and economically superior support system to timber sets as well as being far more fire resistant.

In the 1990’s, Técnicas Reunidas developed the Modified ZINCEX® Process to recover zinc from ores and secondary materials. The heart of this process was the use of solvent extraction to produce purified zinc electrolyte instead of traditional zinc dust cementation. This development was commercialized by Reunion Mining and Anglo American for primary ore at the Skorpion mine in Namibia with the first SHG zinc produced in May 2003. Horsehead Corporation through Horsehead Metal Products, Inc., its wholly owned subsidiary, is presently commercializing the MZP for the treatment of Waelz oxide. This paper will review open source information about the lessons learned and process modifications that have occurred at Skorpion over the past decade. It will also provide an update on Horsehead’s facility being constructed in Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Numerous data in the literature confirm that the chemical composition and consumption of grinding media influence electrochemical properties of flotation suspension as well as effectiveness and selectivity of upgrading processes. During a milling process, attrition of grinding media is observed. Depending on the susceptibility to abrasion, the grinding media influence, to a different extent, the redox potential, pH as well as flotation efficiency. As a result, different upgradeability of sulfide minerals is observed. The paper presents laboratory scale flotation results, obtained for the copper sulfide ore from Polkowice Region of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. in Poland ground in the presence of forged steel, highchrome iron and stainless steel as the grinding media. The investigated flotation feed contained 36 g/t (ppm) of silver and 1.86 % of copper. Several flotation tests were conducted using fixed amount of frother and a mixture of sodium ethyl and isobutyl xanthates as the collector at three different doses of 75, 100 and 125 g/t. A comparison of the obtained results confirmed that the application of grinding media with different chemical compositions influenced the electrochemical properties of the suspension and recovery of silver and copper in the final concentrate. The highest values of redox potential were observed for the stainless steel as the grinding medium. Moreover, in the presence of this type of grinding media, regardless of the collector dosage, the best silver upgrading was observed. For the forged and high-chrome iron media, the recovery of silver depended on the collector dosage. It is indicated that higher levels of the redox potential, together with smaller amount of iron released from the grinding medium, improve the flotation of the silver-bearing mineral compounds from the copper sulfide ore.

Alberta Plains coals exhibit an almost rectilinear system of vertical fracturing called "cleat", which is best traced by mapping true bearings of underground coal mine rooms. The cleat pattern is approximately conformable with a pattern of surficial features and a pattern of bedrock jointing in the Alberta Plains, and with the trend of the Rocky Mountain Trench, but not with the distribution pattern of coal rank nor with the trend of the eastern boundary of the Rocky Mountains and Foothills physiographic province. The processes resulting in cleat remain in doubt, but cleat is always of practical importance in extracting coal from deeply buried deposits.

The history and experience of early companies in the Islands is illustrated by the typical transactions of Trans-Western from 1959 to date. Trans-Western had entered into farmout agreements with companies strong enough to carry out at least the required minimum exploratory work and then such development as might be warranted. The farmee companies were required to make deposits to guarantee work performance during the first period of validity, i.e. the first 3 years of the 12-year life of the permits, and at the rate of 5 cents per acre. At that time, a good deal of geology was available, as a result of extensive exploration that had been carried on by the Geological Survey of Canada and other geological enterprises, with field parties travelling over and camping on all of those Islands. Trans-Western's farmees then selected, from Trans-Western's priority on 13.5 million acres, what they believed were the lands most prospective of producing large oil and gas discoveries, and, having the right to trim off acreage which they considered less prospective, thereby reducing the acreage of Trans-Western and its farmees to in excess of 5.5 million acres. The farmees then commenced a 3-year program carrying out geological exploration to the required minimum of 5 cents per acre, and with some permanent and many mobile camps.

Introduction The pages that follow present a brief chronological survey of views which have been held, and of legislation enacted, for the regulation of the natural gas and oil industry in the Turner Valley field, especially as regards conservation of the natural gas. To provide a necessary background for an adequate understanding of the progress of events in western Canada, there is included also a compilation, from technical and legal authorities, of some of the more important measures which have been adopted for the regulation of the oil and gas fields of the United States, where these measures have had, or are likely to have, a bearing on the course of our domestic industry. Owing to exigencies of space, it has been possible to refer only to the most outstanding proposals and legislation, and to these in the briefest possible form. Although, so far as Canada is concerned, the data presented are restricted almost entirely to the Turner Valley field, it is the hope of the writer that the paper may prove of value for purposes of reference: for any similar gas and oil fields discovered in western Canada will certainly revive and intensify the problem of the proper steps to be taken for the conservation of the gas. Definition of 'Conservation The term conservation has been so misunderstood and misrepresented that, to many persons in Alberta, it means little more than closing-in wells. In the light of the definition of Charles E. Hughes, that 'True conservation of a raw material is its economical use', the subject of natural gas conservation is inseparably involved with the study of the function of the -gas and with the development of the principles of unit operation.

This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. In order to maximally remove the harmful impurities phosphorus and reduce the loss of valuable elements from Si-based alloy for production of solar-grade silicon, thermodynamic properties of the Si-based alloy were studied. In this work a new model, the Molecular Interaction Volume Model (MIVM) derived from statistical thermodynamics, was successfully used in the Si-based and Si-Fe-based alloy. The calculation started from binary Si-Fe, Si-P and Fe-P systems, then the thermodynamic parameters of ternary systems could be derived based sub-binary systems. Using the activity coefficients of the elements in the Si-based alloys and the saturated vapor pressure of the pure substance of the components, mass fraction of P during vapor-liquid equilibrium can be calculated. The calculated thermodynamic parameters were compared with experimental data available in different publications, and it is found that the thermodynamic parameters calculated using MIVM model are in good agreement with the measured results. The calculated result shows that the mass fraction of phosphorus during vapor-liquid equilibrium of Si-Fe-P melt increases with the increasing phosphorus content and decreasing temperature. This is an important direction for experimental practice in vacuum or low-pressure EML refining of ferrosilicon for potential production of solar-grade silicon without significant vaporization loss of valuable element.

Historically, extracting dissolved solids from formation water was economically motivated. Today, main drivers are environmental benefits and regulations, as large volumes of water needed for hydraulic fracturing require treatment before reuse or disposal. The concentration of dissolved solids in flowback water increases with each use and may require treatment prior to disposal. Element recovery from produced water is not profitable unless market conditions are favourable, recoverable elements are abundant, and economical recovery methods are established. Sale of recovered materials could offset recycling and disposal costs. This paper describes markets for Cl, Na, Ca, K, Sr, Mg, Br, Ba, I, B, and Li, and their concentrations in produced water from oil and gas wells in British Columbia. It recommends revising sampling protocol for produced water.

Over the past decade the use of BIM in the AEC industry has grown several fold and with it the number of standards available for implementing BIM. The ?National BIM Standard? by buildSmart Alliance, the ?Contractor Guide to BIM? by the Associated General Contractors of America, the ?BIM Project Execution Planning Guide and Templates? from Penn State University, the ?BIM Roadmap? by the US Army Corps of Engineers are some of the several BIM guidelines that are currently available to the AEC industry practitioners. Some of these guidelines are as comprehensive as defining BIM and the associated taxonomy while others are meant to be used on an individual project basis. From a contractor?s perspective one of the key benefits of using BIM is for the purpose of collision detection and coordination. This research has found that currently available guidelines do not address these issues adequately. For instance, the currently available guidelines do not allow the subcontractor to quickly communicate issues such as naming conventions and color schemes within the model, to the general contractor. Consequently general contractors and sub-contractors find themselves making changes to their BIM deliverables based on each other?s abilities and levels of adoption, apart from reason?s stemming from use of different software platforms. This paper describes how a group of contractors and subcontractors from Atlanta and Birmingham in the United States came together to create and adopt a ?Coordination Guidelines for Virtual Design and Construction?. These guidelines were specifically created with the purpose of streamlining the construction coordination process using BIM. This paper describes how the guidelines created differ from other guidelines currently available in the industry.

Using constructed wetlands to chemically reduce hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) to Cr(III) from industrial and mining wastewater has proven to be feasible and efficient. Applying first-order kinetics to describe the process is simple, but in some cases a more accurate model is required to reflect the process. This paper studies the feasibility of using non–first-order kinetics to describe the reduction process. Results indicate that half- and second-order kinetics adequately described Cr(VI) reduction in laboratory wetland mesocosms. The organic carbon content played a relevant role, whether it was built up by plant growth or spiked into the feed water.

The Kilmar dolomitic magnesite deposit~ in sourhwesr Quebec lie in Grenville Province sedimentary rocks that strike north and dip steeply west. The sediments comprise quartzitic, carbonate and argillaceous members. The middle or carbonate member hosts the magnesite and, like the two other members, has been intensely mewmorphosed. Magnesite occurs as lenticular shaped zones of altered limestone and is mixed with 5 to 30% dolomite crystals. Diopside, serpentine and mica are common accessory minerals. Magnesite appears to have formed from merasomarism of all or part of the carbonate member due to intrusion of hot magnesia-rich solutions. Magnesite is mined from a 490 m vertical shaf1 and is milled and burned into clinkers, which then are shipped 10 pyroprocessing industries around the world.

The electric smelting of five lowgrade Canadian manganese ores has been investigated at the Mines Branch, Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, Ottawa. Ferromanganese, silkomanganese, and spiegeleisen were produced 1by special smelting processes from these ores since the latter were too low grade to be treated by conventional smelting methods. In one case the results were considered to be sufficiently promising to justify the construction of a pilot plant, by the Company concerned, for the further development of the process.
