A survey of the literature reveals wide differences in the procedures used in making iron ore pellets and in the properties of the pellets obtained. In this paper, the methods of production and the properties of pellets, as reported in the literature, are examined in an effort to determine what correlations exist between them. An attempt is also made to determine the levels of the properties of pellets which are considered acceptable and desirable in modern practice. M UCH has been written regarding the important changes which have been taking place recently in the iron ore industry. As the demand for ore has increased and the supply of direct-shipping ore has dwindled, tl1e problems associated with the utilization of lower grade ores ha\•e been intensely investigated and important advances in both beneficiation and agglomeration techniques have taken place. In particular, there has been a great deal of activity in connection with the pelletizing method of agglomeration. The legacy of orphaned/abandoned mines, with their associated environmental liability, human health concerns and the financial costs of clean up is a serious issue facing Canada. In 1999 and 2000, a number of stakeholders put forth requests to Mines Ministers to establish a joint industry-government working group, assisted by other stakeholders to review the issue of abandoned mines. The Ministers supported this initiative and asked that a multi-stakeholder workshop be organized to identify key issues and priorities. The Workshop on Abandoned Mines, held June 2001 in Winnipeg, developed consensus, guiding principles and recommendations that were presented at the Mines Ministers? Conference, September 2001. Ministers agreed on the importance of a large-scale program for the rehabilitation of orphaned/abandoned mines sites. A multi-stakeholder Orphaned/Abandoned (O/A) Mines Advisory Committee was formed and a plan was developed to study various issues relating to the implementation of remediation programs across Canada. Three task groups were formed to address the following key areas: Information Gathering; Community Involvement; and Barriers to Collaboration. The presentation will include a summary of the results of the three projects and the future work plan for the program.

The Cornwallis Fold Belt in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago contains numerous Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) Zn- Pb occurrences and the world-class Polaris deposit. The occurrences are mainly hosted by the dolostone in the Thumb Mountain Formation which spreads over 25000 km2. Success in exploration requires further understanding of the genesis of these occurrences and an assessment of their parentage with the giant Polaris deposit. Syn-sulfide dolomites in regional occurrences share C-O-Sr isotopic characteristics similar with Polaris dolomites, indicating warm basinal brines enriched in 87Sr. The dolomites and sphalerites contain fluid inclusions with ice-melting temperature between ?45° and ?25°C, which is significantly lower than for most MVT districts in the world (?30° and ?10°C). These characteristics indicate that all the Cornwallis occurrences were produced by fluids of the same sources and/or aquifers. The deposit size was largely controlled by the rate and duration of the metal-carrying fluid flow, and by the availability of reduced sulfur at the site of mineralization.

Recycling of electronic wastes is an important subject both from an environmental point of view and also the recovery of valuable materials. In this research, PC board scraps were leached to recover Cu, Ag, Au and Pd. Due to the high cost of the shredding process and to avoid secondary pollution from odors and dusts, board scraps were cut into 5X5 cm2 pieces. To determine the most effective leachant, aqua regia, nitric acid, hydrochloric acid, ammonium persulfate and potassium persulfate were tested. The effect of the leaching parameters, the leachant concentration, temperature, leaching time and liquid to solid ratio were studied and optimized using response surface methodology.

Introduction It is only fitting on this occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the incorporation of the Institute that we should indulge in a bit of retrospection and review the progress that has been made within this period in the various branches of the mining industry- progress that is so closely associated with the members of this Institute. Such a moment of retrospection will enable us better to appreciate the present status of the industry and to perceive more clearly the trends that should guide us in making sound plans for the future. The past half century has been a period of amazing industrial progress in Canada. In this period, the economy of our country has changed from one based chiefly on agriculture and the export of raw materials, to an economy based largely on a well integrated manufacturing industry. In all' o( these major developments, industrial minerals have played an important part and will play an increasingly, important part in the future. By ?industrial minerals? we mean the various non-metallic minerals (exclusive of fuels) as well as the rocks, sands, and clays used for industrial purposes. They are now used so widely and in such large quantities that modern industry could not function without them, and their continued availability at low cost is vital to the industrial future of Canada. The key position occupied by industrial minerals in modern Canadian industry was well illustrated two years ago when a strike occurred in the only Canadian plant producing soda-ash and calcium chloride at a time when those materials were already in short supply and unavailable from other sources. Within a short time of the shutdown of this plant, in which the two principal raw materials are limestone and salt, the great aluminium reduction plants on the Saguenay river were forced to curtail operations because of the lack of soda-ash, essential to the process of extracting aluminium from its ore. Automobile production, already harassed by a shortage of steel, was further hampered when glass for windshields and windows could not be supplied because the glass industry was slowed down almost to a standstill for want of soda-ash. Soap became almost unobtainable both to the housewife and to industrial users, because soda-ash is required in its manufacture. As a consequence of the soap shortage, the production o synthetic rubber at Sarnia was threatened because soap in large quantities is essential to the polymerization process. Motorists on gravelled highways all over Eastern Canada drove through clouds of dust because calcium chloride, used for dust laying, was not to be had. There were other cases of dislocation of industry related to the shutdown of this particular plant, but the above illustrates the wide ramifications of industrial minerals in modern industry. However, it is extremely doubtful if many Canadian citizens realized that these apparently unrelated happenings were connected in any way with limestone and salt.

Based on improved methods of collection and analysis of geotechnical data, slope angles have been steepened in some mines of the Iron Ore Company of Canada at Schefferville, Quebec. This paper describes the slope design case history for Fleming NO.3 mine and illustrates the application of modern techniques. The new design has resulted in significant financial savings due to a reduction in required waste stripping.

"A 2003 paper discussed the idea that as gold mining companies grow larger it becomes more difficult for them to discover or acquire new gold deposits large enough to replace extracted reserves on an annual basis. Deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are statistically few. An update in 2005 reviewed VLGPs with respect to production, reserves, and reserve life and observed recent changes in the gold mining industry. Now, more than 12 years later, this paper explores how those VLGPs have fared and how the gold mining industry has changed. "10.1. IntroductionAs discussed by Westland (1981), the six platinum-group elements (PGE) belong to the Group VIII transition metals, to which iron, nickel and cobalt also belong. The chemical similarity between these nine metals accounts for the fact that they tend to be concentrated together as a result of geological processes. These processes started to effect the distribution of these metals at the very beginning of the earth's history.The first line in Table 1 gives the concentration of nickel and certain other Group VIII transition metals in carbonaceous chondrites, those meteorites with a composition that is believed to reflect best the composition of our planetary system apart from hydrogen and helium. The second line is the estimated concentration of the same elements in the earth as a whole. It is seen that these two estimates are quite similar, the earth being perhaps 2 to 3 times richer in these particular metals than the planetary system as a whole. The reason for this is not fully understood, but it may be due to the earth being formed by the accumulation and capture of a greater proportion of iron (and therefore siderophile-rich) than stoney (and therefore siderophile-poor) planetesimals than the planetary system itself.The third line in Table 1 is the average composition of the crust of the earth. With the exception of iron, all of the Group VIII transition elements are rare in the crust, present at concentrations of It tOO to Itt ,000 of that of the bulk earth. This is because the outstanding chemical characteristic of this group of elements is their siderophile nature; that is, their tendency to alloy with metallic iron. Because of this, once the earth became molten very early in its life history, these elements dissolved in the molten iron present at this stage and were removed from the outer accessible parts as this dense liquid sank to the centre of the earth to form the core. Although iron was the main instrument of concentration of the Group VIII metals, its much greater over-all abundance and its ability to combine with oxygen more easily than the others in the group means that significant amounts still remain in the oxidized portions of the earth.The fact that most of the Group VIII metals are available to use in workable concentrations at all is that they are 5 to 30 times more concentrated in the earth's mantle than the crust, as shown in line 4 of Table I. There has been a constant, if slow, interchange of matter between the mantle and the overlying crust throughout most of the earth's history and, under certain circumstances, this interchange has given rise to economic concentrations of metals."

Away back in the eighties of the last century, when Sir Charles, then Doctor, Tupper, was not only a prominent but a dominant figure in the political life of Nova Scotia, his opponents brought the railing accusation against him that he was the foremost of egotists because of his frequent use of the personal pronoun. I heard Tupper speak and had no sympathy with the railers, because I could not well see how the pronoun could be dispensed with without laying himself open to a charge of affectation. I shall make reference in what follows to incidents in which I have taken part, and shall be at no pains to dispense with the pronoun, even though thereby I lay my-self open to the charge of being a pupil of the deceased states-man. EVENTS LEADING UP TO THE ORGANIZATION OF THE PROVINCIAL WORKMEN'S ASSOCIATION The Springhill Mining Company began development work at Springhill in the early seventies of last century. So vigorously was the work prosecuted that in 18 7 4 two slopes, the east and the west, were in active operation, with a considerable. output, the east slope on occasional days producing 800 tons. The President of the Company, the late Senator McFarlane, was a Nova Scotian, the other directors were mainly merchants from St. John, N.B. From the first the enterprise was an .astonishing success, due in the greatest part to its geographical position, and in large part to the untiring vigilance of the directors, a majority of whom visited the collieries at short intervals, thereby keeping the manager, much of the time, on tenter hooks.

The Internet is creating new distribution channels and offers new technology platforms with significant advantages over more traditional methods. Mines will have to re-evaluate both the strategies and the tactics employed in these areas. Mines will use e-commerce to integrate their maintenance, repair, and operating supply chains. The integration will extend beyond traditional trading partners to a worldwide network of communities with similar interests and goals. The changes will transform the way mines operate, lower mining costs, and thereby increase their chances of success in an increasingly competitive environment.

In potash ore flotation, carried out in NaCI-KCI saturated brine (about 6-7 molar KC1 and NaCI solution), long-chain primary amines are used as flotation collectors. Long-chain primary amines are poorly soluble in water and their solubility further decreases at high electrolyte concentration. For ionic surfactants there is a characteristic temperature (Krafft Point, KP) below which their solubility is too low for micellization. In a previous study, the effect of pH on the KP of dodecylammonium chloride in water was determined [Q. Dai and J.S. Laskowski, Langmuir, 7, 1361-1365 (1991)]. This paper deals with the effect of electrolyte concentration on the KP of dodecylammonium chloride. The derived theoretical relationship between the KP and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) for dodecylamine can be used to calculate the KP for electrolyte concentrations of up to 0.5 mol/L (about 8% NaCI-KCI brine). A simple experimental procedure for the determination of the KP for higher electrolyte concentrations is also described. The results show that the Krafft point of dodecylamine increases from about 17-18°C (in distilled water) to about 80°C at 16% brine saturation.

Surface wave imaging is a relatively new seismic technique that generates subsurface depth images without having to drill boreholes into the ground, and is rapidly becoming a standard tool in non-destructive geotechnical characterization. This paper presents a case study of the application of these surface wave techniques to image shallow abandoned mine workings at the Montague Gold Mines district near Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. This district has numerous steeply dipping narrow vein workings from historical mining activity, and has actively subsiding and collapsing crown pillars. Due to the rugged conditions at the site and the relative narrowness of the openings (often less than 1 m), a surface seismic system was developed that had improved portability and lateral resolution over other available seismic imaging systems. Seismic surveys were conducted over two sites where independent evidence indicated the presence of shallow mine workings. At one site, a comparative gravity survey was also conducted. The seismic data was processed to generate velocity vs depth images. Overall, the velocity images show vertical zones of zero velocity in the same lateral positions where historical mapping, current subsidence and gravity surveys indicate the presence of steeply dipping workings. Further, the velocity sections are consistent with the thickness of the till cover at each site and the possible weakening of crown pillars at one of the sites.

"Conventional crushing and grinding is followed by gravity concentration to recover free milling gold. Refractory gold, finely disseminated within the pyrite and arsenopyrite matrix, is recovered by flotation followed by pressure oxidation, cyanidation, and cementation. Non-refractory gold is recovered by cyanidation/CIP processing.A comprehensive test program aimed at improving flotation recovery was initiated in June 1995. Plant testing indicated that flotation tails value could be significantly reduced using mechanical flotation cells. Based on these test results, a flotation circuit that incorporates one of the three existing flotation columns followed by mechanical scavenging and cleaning was developed. Detailed engineering was completed in September 1996. Construction started in February 1997 and was completed in 3 months at a cost of $3.2 million. An on-stream X-ray analyzer was installed to provide real-time arsenic and iron analyses and inferred sulphur value on some of the flotation streams.The new flotation circuit proved to be an instant success. Flotation tails values were reduced by 27%. Final tails solids and solution was reduced from 0.035 to 0 023, and 0.0014 to 0.0006 oz/ton Au, respectively. Based on a mill throughput of 1,620 stpd this decrease in tails value will result in an increased gold production of 7,500 ounces per year. The payback for the project is estimated to be around one year.This paper describes the evolution of the project from bench scale testing to commissioning. Also, the operational and economic impacts on down stream processing are highlighted"

"Besshi-type Cu-Zn (-Ag-A u ± Co) deposits are tabular, stratiform volcanogenic sulphide bodies which are usually associated with mafic volcanic rocks of oceanic or intra-plate geochemistry, but which can also be found locally with ultramafic volcanics or subvolcanic mafic intrusions. A thick sequence of continentally-derived clastic sediment usually encloses both the mafic volcanics and the ore. Besshi-type deposits form subaqueously, in epicratonic rifting environments, more-or-less proximally, and as a result of hydrothermal convection in their subjacent mafic volcanic - clastic sedimentary piles. They belong to a rift -related metallogenic spectrum that includes sediment-hosted and Cyprus-type base metal deposits, and may diller genetically from these mainly with respect to rate and degree of crustal extension. Modern analogues to these deposits are f ound in the submarine volcanogenic sinters of the Gulf of California rift system.The associated lithologies and tectonic selling of Besshi-type deposits clearly distinguish them from Kuroko-type ores. This difference also seems to be reflected in their lead isotopic character. For example, leads from Besshi-type deposits in the Sanbagawa belt of Japan and from the Blue Ridge belt of southeastern U.S.A. lie on extended anomalous lead lines and have lowslopes in 207Pb/204 Pb - 206Pb/ 204 Pbspace (Sato and Sasaki, 1980; Leriuray, 1982), wheras those from most Kurokotype mining districts exhibit only narrow isotopic ranges and lie near or on the orogene growth curve (e.g. , Franklin et a I., 1981). More over, where Besshi- and Kuroko-type deposits are found in the same orogene, the former often occur earlier in the tectonic cycle than the tatter (e.g., Japan, the Norwegian Caledonides, the southern Appalachians and south-central Finland).Besshi-type deposits are not confined to any particular part of the world, or to any geological epoch. Moreover, in many mineralized belts, Besshi-type deposits are the predominant volcanogenic ore type. On a world-wide scale, deposits of this type therefore constitute an important base metal resource."

As an occupational culture, mining comes with its own set of rules, agendas and values. Yet mines often also operate in the traditional territories of indigenous communities, with whom specific agreements are negotiated that commit to respect culture, economy and environment. Mines in these locations employ extremely diverse workforces whose value systems often come into conflict in on-the-job relationships. Adaptation of individual worker attitudes and industrial operating culture thus both need to occur if there is to be the negotiation of a workable relationship. This paper will discuss ways that NWT diamond mines have adapted to their workforce, to ensure that rights and cultures of their diverse workforce can be respected. Historically, the concept of culture has been dealt with solely through the forum of ?cross-cultural? workshops. Gibson presents a model of a new type of ?cultural-engagement? workshop based on the top ten cross-cultural conflicts that actually arise at a remote mine-site. This model helps managers, team leaders, and workers to tackle in-mine conflicts that arise based on differing value systems of aboriginal and non-aboriginal workers and management. In addition, Gibson suggests that the concept of culture must be more rigorously applied throughout the mine structure and not discussed only in the forum of the cross-cultural workshop.

It was determined by the authors that the water that remains in the filter cake after filtration in iron ore concentrators can contain several hundred times greater concentrations of calcium ions and other cations, due to surface chemical effects carrying the ions along with the water. Filter cake from two plants was analyzed. The water retained in samples of magnetite concentrate filter cake in Plant 1 contained 5088 ppm calcium and 5995 ppm magnesium, while the Plant 2 filter cake contained 231 ppm calcium and 119 ppm magnesium. These levels were dramatically elevated compared to the water that was removed from the concentrate by filtration for recycle to the plants (9 ppm calcium/15 ppm magnesium for Plant 1, and 11.9 ppm calcium/9.3 ppm magnesium in Plant 2). In addition to possible effects on agglomeration performance, the presence of these cations also affected the efficiency of filtration. In order to reduce the effects of these cations on filtration in Plant 2, carbon dioxide was injected into the slurry before it entered the filter press. This was found to increase filtration rates by up to 23.7%. Comparison of the results from the two plants shows that the concentrations of cations present in the filter cake will vary greatly from plant to plant, with correspondingly large variations in their effects on plant operations.

Most large skarn deposits are zoned in both space and time relative to associated intrusions. Zonation occurs on scales from kilometers to micrometers, and re?ects in?ltrative ?uid ?ow, wall rock reaction, temperature variations, and ?uid mixing. The most spectacular examples of skarn zonationusually occur at the skarn-marble contact, where transitions between monomineralic bands can be knifesharp. Other small-scale examples occur in zoned veins and individual mineral crystals. Although,visually striking and scienti?cally interesting, in mineral exploration these small-scale variations areless useful than deposit- or district-scale zonation. In most skarn systems there is a general zonationpattern of proximal garnet, distal pyroxene, and vesuvianite (or a pyroxenoid such as wollastonite, bustamite, or rhodonite) at the marble front. As well, individual skarn minerals may display systematic color or compositional variations within the larger zonation pattern. Such patterns are reviewed for 14well-studied examples of Cu, W, Sn, Au, and Zn-Pb skarns. In addition, many deposits have endoskarnor other alteration of the associated intrusion, and recrystallization or other subtle changes have occurred in the surrounding wall rocks. Copper skarns, such as Mines Gaspé in Quebec and Big Gos-san in Irian Jaya, have high ratios of garnet:pyroxene and are zoned outward from the intrusion, to gar-net, to pyroxene, to massive-sul?de replacement and vein deposits. Garnets in Cu skarn are Fe-rich and change from dark red-brown near the intrusive contact to paler brown, green, or yellow in distal loca-tions. Pyroxenes in Cu skarns are pale and diopsidic near the intrusion, and become darker and more Fe- and Mn-rich away from the intrusion. Tungsten skarns, such as Salau and Costabonne in France and Pine Creek and Garnet Dike in California, have intermediate ratios of garnet: pyroxene, are more extensive vertically and along strike than perpendicular to the intrusive contact, and have zonation pat-terns commonly complicated by overprinting of metamorphic lithologies. In W skarns, garnet is com-monly subcalcic and the pyroxene is Fe-rich, re?ecting particularly reducing wall rocks or great depth of formation. Tin skarns, such as Dachang in China and Moina in Australia, also can have subcalcicgarnet and Fe-rich pyroxene, but this reduced mineral assemblage typically is due to an association with reduced S-type granites. Tin skarns differ from most other skarn types in having a late greisens stage that may replace earlier Sn-bearing calc-silicate minerals, thus liberating Sn to form cassiterite.Many high-grade Au skarns, such as Hedley in British Columbia and Fortitude in Nevada, have low ratios of garnet: pyroxene and are associated both with reduced plutons and reduced wall rocks. Gold-rich zones occur in Fe-rich, pyroxene-dominant, distal skarn. Zn-Pb skarns, such as the Yeonhwa-Ulchin district in Korea and Groundhog in New Mexico, have low ratios of garnet: pyroxene and generally form distal to associated intrusions. These skarns also are zoned from proximal garnet to distal pyroxene and pyroxenoid (bustamite-rhodonite), with signi?cant zones of massive sul?des within and beyond skarn. Manganese enrichment of most mineral phases, particularly pyroxene, is characteristic of distal zones. Fundamental controls on skarn zonation include temperature, depth of formation, composition and oxidation state of associated plutons and wall rocks, and tectonic setting. Most W skarns form at relatively great depth, 5 km to 20 km, with extensive high-temperature metamorphic and meta-somatic mineral assemblages. In contrast, most other skarn types are relatively shallow, <10 km and mostly <5 km, with limited, lower temperature metamorphic aureoles. Differences in oxidation state correlate well with different skarn zonation patterns, particularly garnet: pyroxene ratios and compositions, and can be used in both classi?cation of and exploration for skarn deposits

"3.1. IntroductionAmong the six platinum-group elements (POE), four have identical cubic symmetry, two identical hexagonal symmetry (Table 3.1). Despite crystallographic differences, there is a clear relationship expressed in the chemistries of the POE: they tend to be mutually soluble in one another and can frequently substitute for one another in compounds with other elements. This chapter consolidates the data on phase relations of the POE and the compounds they form with elements selected for their known or potentially important mineralogical significance- As, Bi, Cu, Fe, Hg, In, Ni, Pb, S, Sb, Se, Sn and Te-together with selected data for the occurrence of POE in certain elements such as Au and Ag, and compounds such as FeS. Resources used to compile the data are those available from the chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical literature. First each element is discussed, with composition limits of solid solutions drawn from binary phase diagrams. Single element data are followed by a discussion of the relevant binary systems and a tabulation of data for binary compounds found in those systems (Table 3.2). Tables and diagrams for the ternary and quaternary systems for which information is available follow, and finally the very limited information on the solubility of POE in mineralogically important elements and compounds is presented.The chemical, mineralogical and metallurgical literature on the unary and binary systems is extensive and widely scattered in many languages and publications; fortunately, most of the data needed to compile this chapter can be found in reliable compendia. "In this study, potential benefits of focculant usage were explored in the processing of mill tailings by hydrocyclones. Tests conducted on copper-nickel mill tailings have demonstrated that, under suitable conditions, flocculation could significantly enhance solid-liquid separation in hydrocyclones. For example, at a feed pulp density of approximately 9%, focculant-assisted hydrocyclone produced an underflow with over 98% solids recovery, compared to a recovery of less than 53% with conventional hydrocyclone. However, feed pulp density was found to be a critical factor, and tailings with pulp densities of greater than about 15%required a two-stage hydrocyclone operation where the focculant-assisted hydrocyclone was employed at the second stage to process the overfow of a conventional hydrocyclone.The underflow and overflow products obtained from the focculant-assisted hydrocy-clone may be discharged into tailings dams in the same manner as those produced by gravity thickeners. The focculant-assisted hydrocy-clone would, however, provide a higher throughput."

"IntroductionMechanization underground at the Buffalo Ankerite mine in Deloro township, Porcupine district, had reached a high level by 1944, both in equipment available, and in the use of this equipment, for all stoping operations. Power feed leyners and the latest type of stopers for drilling, slushers for moving ore and fill, and tugger hoists for all servicing, did much to halt rising stope costs, and in some cases decreased them. On the other hand, little beyond the use of mucking machines and power feed leyners had been adopted in the effort to reduce level development costs, or to increase the advance per man-shift.Faced with ever increasing level development costs, caused by rising prices of equipment and supplies, coupled with increasing wage demands for less physical effort, it was realized that more mechanization of development work was essential. The objectives of such further mechanization were:(1) Decreased development costs(2) Increased footage per man-shift(3) Less physical effort by development crews, with greater take-home pay (4) A more satisfied and stable labour force"
