The Fraser Range is composed dominantly of basic pyroxene granulites derived from basalts, many of which appear to have been vesicular and*pillowed. Acidic and basic garnet-bearing granulites are important in the west, and acidic granulites and narrow anortho- site layers are dominant in some regions east of the Fraser Range. An extensive flat-lying olivine gabbro sheet cuts the granulites, and in places has been converted to spinel-bearing meta-gabbros and pyroxene granulites. The granulites of the Fraser Range (Proterozoic) are separated from the gneisses and schists of the Goldfields regions (Archaean) by the Fraser Fault, over which there is a large gravity anomaly (gradient 20 milligals per mile). Some of the problems associated with the concentration of Cu, Ni, etc. liberated from mineral lattices during metamorphism, and other principles of metal concentration in granulite terranes, are discussed. The recognition of vesicular and pillowed zones, even though highly metamorphosed, is of fundamental importance.

SINCE 1900, five underground fires of consequence have beenrecorded in the Broken Hill mines. These occurred at the Junction(1906), Proprietary (1906 and 1916), Block 14 (1906), and Centralmines (1923). All have been extinguished, but at an enormouscost; e.g., in the eleven months following on the 1923 Central mine fire the sum of £187,123 was expended in fire-fighting operations.To this series may be added others, as the South (1925) and British mine (1918) fires, which were extinguished before serious damage had resulted. All, however, have occurred within a period of 28 years, and in a district where spontaneous combustion, a prolific source of fire in the U.S.A., has been practically nonexistent. The control of mineral processing plants incorporates a number of off-line and on-line actions by plant personnel to obtain satisfactory plant performance. In general, off-line actions centre around intensive data analysis, while on-line activities are either automated control actions or prompted by qualitative interpretations of quantitative and qualitative information. Data sets obtained by various data logging devices and laboratory analysis of samples in many modem plants may be very large and are often unmanageable. This paper presents a method of analysing the data sets typically found in mineral processing, based on cluster analysis. The results of this analysis leads to a more complete understanding of operations in comparison with existing analysis tools used in mineral processing.Improved process configuration, optimised control strategies and in some cases, direct use of the results in monitoring process unit operations may be achieved.

Approval to operate Longwall No. 7 at Appin Colliery in 1979 was granted pursuant not only to the usual statutory provisions, but also that an adequate means of drainage of methane gas be incorporated. A methane drainage plant was subsequently designed and constructed some two km from the pit top at the site of the Colliery main upcast and down cast shafts. Modern plants of this nature are completely automated using programmable controllers and computers to provide control and management reporting functions. Complex mechanical systems are installed to extract the gas and in handling and storage processes. Gas utilisation plants exist which can generate power from methane. These plants are further enhanced by harnessing waste heat produced in the generation process. The installation, automation control and monitoring of these plants incorporates many facets of engineering from high voltage power supply and computer technology to complex gas handling procedures used in gas compression storage.and generation of electric power.

In epithennal deposits changes in the character of mineralization in depth and time are conspicuous and abrupt at the interface between supergene and hypogene zones. As the reaction zone migrates downward as a consequence of surface erosion, previously deposited minerals are placed in unstable chemical enviromments and dissolved. This reaction takes place at the base of the epithermal precious metal zone. Examples at Cerro de Pasco, and Casapalca, Peru; Carlin, Nevada; and porphyry copper-gold deposits are cited.

The problem of manufacturing from sulphuric 'acid and Christmas Igland "A" phosphate, superphosphate of acceptable physical condition and agronomic phosphate availability, is directly related- to the crystallisation of a reac- tion product, monocalcium phosphate monohydrate. Titrimetric studies have been carried out on the activated carbons Kintal 1105, Norit 2520 and Kuraray 2GA. Titration curves of the carbons before and after acid and water washing and gold loading indicate that the acid-base properties of the carbons are affected by both the method of treatment and also by the loading of gold. It is considered that the pKa values of the functional groups on the carbon surface are in the regions of 11, 7 and 3 respectively.

Grade control plays an essential role in the good running of a mine. The factors at play are many, starting from a good analysis of the geology and a correct sampling procedure. Once this is achieved (and it is an essential prerequisite), the problem is to adequately define what is ore and what is waste. This paper tries to show, through a small example, how simple geostatistical techniques (variography, and moving average or kriging), can help in accurately defining these limits in a geologically homogeneous zone, thus allowing optimal use of the available information.

The DOZ underground mine at PT Freeport Indonesia is a copper and gold mine in Indonesia with current ore production of 42 000 tpd. Because of the mine expansion into the West DOZ more ventilation raises are needed to create a safe and healthy work place. All ventilation raises that connect the extraction levels to the underlying gallery exhaust drifts at DOZ are now developed using drop raise techniques. This paper describes the improvements undertaken to increase blasting efficiency, to decrease cost and reduce safety risks. This was achieved by using deck loading and presplitting, changing of stemming materials and prevention of excessive raise collar cratering (blow up).

The problems arising in the excavation of hard rocks with the use of mechanical tools consist chiefly in a slow advance rate accompanied by an intensive wear due to the toughness and abrasiveness of the rock. In order to allow the further extension of mechanical excavation beyond the limits of the presently available technology, the assistance of waterjet aiming at improving the performance of the equipment while reducing the wear rate of the tools, has been recognised as one of the most interesting technical solutions. The paper illustrates the improvement of the performance of both disk cutters and picks obtained with the waterjet assistance at the Waterjet Laboratory of the University of Cagliari on a medium-hard rock.

Tailings disposal and water management are one of the most important environmental issues in mining projects. The nature and the method of disposal of the tailings will determine the long term environmental impacts and must be carefully considered at the planning stage so that final abandonment can be economically achieved. If not, long term and on-going treatment and amelioration may be required to achieve environmental standards. Final abandonment requires dam safety surveillance inspection to satisfy engineering stability and hazard requirements as well as environmental issues. Environmental issues include stability, as well as rehabilitation and long term contamination potential.

Cement and resin encapsulated tendons are widely used in the stabilisation of mine roadways. One of the main factors in controlling the efficiency of the reinforcement is the ability of the tendon to generate load in response to rock deformation. The analysis of field data from instrumented reinforcing tendons complimented with extensive laboratory investigations have more accurately defined the mechanisms by which load generation occurs. The role of reinforcing tendon profiles, hole geometry and encapsulation medium properties in controlling the reinforcement stiffness and capacity are discussed. The results of the investigation have implications in both the design of rock reinforcing systems and the optimisation of encapsulation mediums and tendons.

Records of ex-solution intergrowths with tetrahedrite as a component are rare. Intergrowths of this nature of tetrahedrite with galena have been described by Guild (1917) and Schneiderhohn (1922), and in Broken Hill ore by Stillwell (1926), but both Schneiderhohn (1922) and Gruner (1929) have commented specifically on the apparent absence of exsolution intergrowths of tetrahedrite and chalcopyrite, despite their frequent association in ores, and their related atomic structures. Schwartz (1942), reviewing the literaturerelating to ex-solution among ore minerals, lists only two instances of such intergrowths, one an occurrence of lamellae of chalcopyrite oriented along the octahedral planes of tentantite (the arsenical isomorph of tetrahedrite), the other of blebs of tetrahedrite in stannite. The uptake of nickel into the lattice of pyrrhotite,Fel_oS has been studied experimentally in the temperaturerange 200 DC to 760 DC. Nickel from both aqueous solutionsand salt melts diffuses rapidly into the sulphide latticewith ,an accompanying rel~ase of iron into the solution ormelt. The rate of uptake of nickel and its diffusion intothe sulphide lattice have been followed ,by opticalmicroscopy and by analysis with an electron probe microanalyser.Some geological consequences of this phenomenonaffecting the distribution of nickel in rocks associatedwith nickel-iron sulphide ores are discussed.

Finally, the methods of repair and overhaul of British Coal equipment and systems ensure that the initial reliability targets outlined on the specification, can still be achieved.
