When conducting gold leach tests on free milling gold ores which method is the best, bottle rolls or the stirred beaker test? Recently, a client requested that gold leach tests be conducted using the stirred beaker methodology. When asked why, because the laboratory was set up to conduct tests using the bottle rolls technique the reply was that the stirred beaker leach test would replicate the plant more closely. Not wishing to upset the client, the instructions were followed. However, the opportunity was taken to complete additional tests so that the two leach procedures could be compared. Further, this comparison was completed on two different gold ores as well as a number of different grinding media types.This paper provides a description of the two laboratory techniques employed, and presents the results of these parallel tests. Interestingly, the assertion that the stirred beaker methodology more closely replicated plant performance was not validated. In fact, the results obtained using this procedure were noticeably different from those observed in the plant, with lower recoveries and significantly higher cyanide consumptions. The bottle rolls test however more adequately replicated plant performance in terms of recovery and cyanide consumption. The abundances and abundance relationships of lead, zinc, copper and silver in the major sulphide lenses at Broken Hill are examined, and their possible geochemical significance discussed.When expressed as atoms per cent, zinc is the most abundant base metal throughout the whole .group of orebodies, the highest average lead: zinc ratio (No. 2 lens) being about 0·45, the lowest (No. 1 lensZinc Lode group) being in the 0·12-0 ·14 range. Lead and silver are clearly higher in the lower two orebodies, but the abundance of zinc shows no apparent relationship with stratigraphical position. Among the base metals copper is conspicuously low and remarkably uniform, a feature noted in other conformable orebodies.Although, as has been recognised for many years, abundances of silver and lead, and lead and zinc, are sympathetically related, correlation within the pairs is variable and generally of low degree. Silver and lead show distinctly the better correlation, particularly in No. 3 lens. On the basis of lead: zinc ratios, No. 2' and No. 3· lenses, on the one hand, and the No. 1 lenses, Rhodonitic and Siliceous Zinc Lodes on the other, constitute two groups. However on the basis of silver : lead ratios, No. 3 lens stands alone, No. 2 lens showing clear affinities with the higher layers. Ternary relationships between copper-zinc-Iead and silver-zinc-Iead emphasize the very close constitutional relationship between the No. 1 lenses and the two "zinc lodes".The possible implications of these relationships are then discussed in the light of the' two principal theories-hydrothermal replacement or chemical sedimentation-held for the formation of the Broken Hill ores. It is pointed out that the ratios of the four metals in the ores are rather different from those found in most igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in seawater. For 'example, whereas copper and zinc are present in almost equal amounts in most terrestrial materials, copper in the ores is only about one-hundredth of the amount of zinc. Lead has increased somewhat, but the ratio of silver to lead has fallen; in spite of its recognition as a source of silver, the Broken Hill lode is impoverished in silver with respect to lead as compared with most common terrestrial materials.No solutions are offered to these prob'lems of abundance. For Fe-Mn alloy production, two reactions are responsible for this process: the MnO reduction in the slag and the carbon dissolution in the bath. The smelting-reduction process has been studied as alternative route to be used to produce alloy so as steel. This technical paper presents some initial studies to be used to determine the main ways that one can have for the mechanisms for this reaction. The limited factors like mass transport or chemical reaction were analysed. The Mn content in the bath were varied and it was concluded that by increasing the former, dissolution of Mn into the bath was increased, so as a reduction of MnO in the slag. For carbon dissolution, it was used a experiment with a stationary bar, this one was added into the bath, after ten minutes probes were catched, by temperature 1600¦C, for the dissolution of MnO, one graphite crucible was employed, after 45 min the slag and alloy were analysed. After the experimental part, some curves were plotted against time, based on these graphics, and kinetic analysis was made.

Total mechanisation in the Western district of New South Wales is quite a recent addition to productive methods in that State, for it was only in 1940 that the first colliery was equipped for this method of winning coal. Now almost all mines either are totally mechanised or are planning to get their coal by these means.This marked change in recent years is explained by the salient features of the industry's history. Collieries in New South Wales had generally been subjected to low selling prices forced on them by over-production and severe competition. Little money was available out of profits to purchase machinery, and returns on capital were so poor that inducement to invest money in the industry was nonexistent.The second world war brought price fixing at the already low prices. It was not until the post-war period that there has been any inducement to mechanise.Much credit for mechanisation can be given to the Joint Coal Board, a government body formed in 1948. Pursuing a broad plan for the rejuvenation of the industry, this Board, purchased large quantities of machinery for use in, mines under hire-purchase agreement. These agreements encouraged machine mining, and this fact, together with the ensuing production economies, has improved the financial position of the industry.The Board has also been instrumental in the granting of increases in the fixed price of coal, so that the industry has been given an even greater boost in the direction of mechanisation.

Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) operates one iron ore mine, three concentration plants and three pelletising plants in Kiruna, Sweden. The current methods of separation at the beneficiation plants are low intensity magnetic separation (LIMS) and reverse apatite flotation, where the wet LIMS stage is regarded as the crucial part of silica separation from the ore. Because future silica levels are expected to increase in the incoming material to the beneficiation plants, geometallurgy has become an important area of development and research.A laboratory-scale methodology was developed for the systematic characterisation of the ore for mineral processing, with the focus on the high silica ore type B2 and newly discovered subtypes. This methodology combines mineralogical, geochemical and process mineralogical characteristics. Automated mineralogy (QEMSCAN®) is used to study the modal mineralogy, the distribution of silicate minerals in different particle size classes after comminution, the deportment of silicon (Si) between various silicates and the degree of liberation and intergrowth of magnetite and silicates. An essential stage in the systematic characterisation of the ore deposit for mineral processing is the estimation and simulation of different parameters from the laboratory scale to the full scale at the concentration plants. This is achieved by using empirical models based on the data collected at the mineral processing plants. As the first step to implement the geometallurgical information, the current geological model is reconstructed with the mineralogy and the two, newly defined subtypes of high silica ore type B2 are separated into different domains.To study the reduction of the SiO2 content in the magnetite concentrate, a large-scale reverse cationic silicate flotation laboratory test program was initiated in early spring 2016. This program investigated potential silicate flotation in the beneficiation plants at the Kiirunavaara site. The second target is to implant mineral processing parameters into the block model based on the new geological model. This information provides a good basis for making a prognosis for mine planning and a quality prognosis regarding the crude ore for mineral processing.CITATION:Niiranen, K, 2017. Complex gold deposits are generally characterised by variable geometries, strong structural controls on grade distribution and a high-nugget effect. The use of diamond drilling and fire assays in this environment often results in an understatement of grade. Bulk samples are likely to be the closest estimators of true grade, and may be required to evaluate geological/grade risk during resource estimation/feasibility studies. Any bulk sampling program requires appropriate planning and implementation. The planning stage should attempt to delimit the extent and nature of mineralisation; characterise mineralogy and metallurgical properties of the ore; and define bulk sample size and how it will be sampled/processed. The approach to sample processing will be governed by the results of metallurgical testing and geological knowledge. Careful design of sampling protocols must be undertaken through material characterisation, understanding of gold particle sizing and the application of GyÆs Sampling Theory.

The Gladstone Hill area hosts epithermal veins similar to those at Martha Hill, which is less than one kilometre away. There are several vein types in the Gladstone Hill area including (1) pyrite-marcasite, (2) quartz, (3) base metal sulfide, and (4) calcite. Pyrite veinlets formed first, whereas the quartz and carbonate veins formed later. The base metal sulfide vein occurs at depth and is predominantly comprised of quartz and chlorite intimately intergrown with pyrite, sphalerite, galena, and rare chalcopyrite. Platy calcite and massive calcite veinlets were the last vein types to form. Several vein textures occur in the Gladstone Hill area, including colloform and crustiform banding, lattice-bladed, zonal, comb, massive and feathery textures. Crustiform banded veins are the dominant texture and contain variable gold-silver grades. Colloform banded veins consist of ubiquitous quartz and minor chalcedony with gold grades as high as 60 g/t. The lattice-bladed texture forms from the deposition of calcite, which has been replaced in many samples by quartz, indicating that boiling and later cooling has taken place. Unreplaced platy calcite only occurs at deeper levels (>300 m). Zonal and comb textures are preserved in quartz and late-stage amethyst veins. Feathery textures within quartz are commonly associated with breccias and some colloform banding, and with significant Au-Ag grades.   The homogenisation temperatures (Th) of primary and secondary inclusions in quartz, amethyst and platy calcite range from 166 to 274¦C, with salinities <1.3 wt% NaCI equiv. The presence of vapor-dominated inclusions and primary fluid inclusions in platy calcite suggests that boiling occurred intermittently throughout deposition. The veins formed under a relatively flat lying paleowater table that occurred 280 - 300 m above sea level. The fluids involved in vein formation were alkali chloride in composition and low in CO2.

Since the Eocene, New Guinea tectonics have been driven largely by the south-westerly-directed collision of accreted arc terranes with the northern margin of the Australian Craton, and subsequent westerly-directed transport of these exotic terranes by left-lateral strike-slip fault systems. The subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath north-eastern New Guinea in the mid- to late-Miocene led to magmatism and related gold-copper porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Maramuni arc and the formation of the Frieda River, Nena, Wafi-Golpu and other deposits.The development of the world-class porphyry and epithermal deposits in the Medial New Guinea magmatic belt, including Grasberg, Ok Tedi and Porgera, is localised by dilational zones formed about the intersections of north-easterly-trending, reactivated basement faults and north-dipping reverse faults related to the southward progression of the Papuan fold belt during the Late Miocene to Pleistocene. These deposits probably formed during short mantle-derived magmatic episodes in zones of regional isostatic uplift, which are attributed to the delamination of the lithospheric mantle beneath New Guinea.CITATION:Garwin, S L, 2015. Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. Constraints on pore water evolution in the aquifers of a sedimentary basin may be realised through stable isotope analyses of present day waters, and their comparison with water compositions calculated to have been in isotope equilibrium with the products of diagenesis during burial. Integrated with detailed petrographic observations, and thermal, structural and stratigraphic analyses, fluid migration patterns at various stages in a basin's history can be identified. This has important implications for modelling basin hydrology, hydrocarbon distribution, and reservoir quality in the Latrobe Group, Gippsland Basin, and oil-prone successions Elsewhere.

Some major mineral deposits in northern Australia are found in preconsolidation slump disturbances in the sediments.In the retransported marine sediments at Tennant Creek, breccia beds and disturbances are found which have localized later mineral deposits such as the Peko copper orebody. These disturbances are thought to result from slumping, turbidity flow and various types of "semi-fluidized" subaqueous slides intermediate between slumps and turbidity currents.Movements are found to ~ause widespread disturbances in the sediments such that subsequent mineralization can spread through a large volume of rock giving rise to orebodies greater than those localized by tectonic structures.A similarity is noted between the sedimentary disturbances at Tennant. Creek and those at Mount Isa and Mary Kathleerr. It is suggested that disturbed beds which are host rocks to ore minerals in these mines may also be due to movements of the sediments before compaction.Certain characteristics of the slumped rocks can be recognized and limited generalizations can be made about the shape, extent and habit of these host rocks and the orebodies they contain.INTRODUCTIONSubmarine slumping and· turbidity current retransport are almost entirely responsible for some types of deep marine sediments.However, little attention has yet been drawn to slump deposits and associated disturbances bedded in the sediments as features localizing later mineralization.A study. has been made by the writer of the slump and associated phenomena of the ,Tennant Creek field where many mineralized bodies, including some gold and copper orebodies, occur as replacements of coarse fragmental slump...

Up to 19 chemical parameters were studied in flotation pulps in six Australian lead-zinc concentrators with the aim of obtaining a better understanding of the nature of, and changes in, the chemical environment. This paperdiscusses collector residuals, metal concentrations in solution, and other parameters.Collectors used in the plants studied were various xanthates, Z-200, and Aerofloats. Xanthate residuals varied in different ways in most plants. However the general trend was for residuals to be at the O· 5-2 p.p.m. level in lead flotation and O· 5 p.p.m. or less in zinc flotation.Aerofloat residuals were also variable but in the plant concerned were at a much higher level (8-10 p.p.m.) than xanthate residuals. Z-200 residuals were in the 10-20 p.p.m. range and it was found that the Z-200 added to zinc flotation was reporting in dam return water and entering lead flotation.Copper concentrations in solution were negligibly low in those plants where cyanide was not used. When cyanide was used, copper was at the 5-20 p.p.m. level and appeared to be present as Cu(CN)-2. However the hiocyanatepresent may be important. Xanthate was also present in these solutions.Zinc concentrations ranged from 0·1 to 800 p.p.m. in different plants. The general trend was for the zinc level to be highest in the grinding circuit and to drop during flotation. However there was always an increase in zinc concentration when copper sulphate was added, even tho.ugh this incre.ase was not permanent, and the increase was greater with higher copper sulphate additions.The manganese concentration also increased appreciably during copper-activation of marmatite. In some plants lead concentrations increased from 0·1 to 1 p.p.m. during activation of marmatite.Calcium concentrations (20-1200 p.p.m.) and magnesium concentrations (10-600 p.p.m.) tended to be fairly stable in each circuit.

The Resource Management Act 1991 provides for activities to be classified as permitted, controlled, restricted discretionary, discretionary, non-complying or prohibited in district and regional plans. This paper looks at the use of the prohibited activity status to restrict, in particular, mining. Often the use of prohibited activity status for mining appears to have no basis other than the negative perceptions that the local community and/or the planner drafting the plan has toward mining and quarrying.   The paper will address the current appeal regarding the use of prohibited activity status now before the Court of Appeal, and the history to the litigation. The relevance of the outcome of the appeal to the minerals sector will also be explained.

Development of SAG liners has always been a strong focus and interest in mineral processing as SAG liners significantly impact on plant performance (throughput and grind size), material costs and plant downtime. SAG shell relines typically determine the frequency and duration of plant shutdowns. Early SAG shell liner designs relied heavily on practical experiences and were limited in their size due to weight restrictions. Significant developments in Discrete Element Method (DEM) modelling, material and manufacturing technologies and larger reline machines have resulted in new and improved liner designs. This paper discusses the evolution of SAG shell liner design and its progression to the Skip Row design. Case studies have been provided for the Skip Row design in a variety of applications such as Single Stage SAG (SSS), SAG and Ball (SAB), SAG and Ball with Crushing (SABC) and Pre-Crush at a variety of mill diameters ranging from 24 foot to 34 foot. A detailed assessment has also been carried out comparing liner service life, ease of reline and performance (throughput, power and grind size) for a large 34 foot SAG mill when compared to the previous design.CITATION:Toor, P, Swart, M and Ståhlbröst, H, 2017. Uranium exploration was commenced in 1973 and carried out at a regional scale over a wide area of the northern part of the Camarvon Basin of Western Australia by Minatome Australia Pty Limited and their joint-venture partners. As a result, pervasive uranium mineralization has been found in the Cretaceous sandstones near Manyingee Hills in the Onslow Region, which were probably deposited in a near-shore, fluvia deltaic palaeo-environment.Mineralization is generally found in poorly sorted argillaceous sandstones and siltstones near redox fronts formed by oxidizing waters circulating in reduced sediments. The principal minerals found in the two Manyingee deposits delineated so far are coffinite, uraninite with associated pyrite in the reduced zones, and phosphuranylite, siderite and limonite in the oxidized zones. The presence of dissolved uranium in the superficial aquifers, of secondary uranium minerals as coatings on granitic rocks, and of recent uranium-bearing calcrete sediments, suggest that the whole Cretaceous-Precambrian system has been subjected to the formation ofroll-front type uranium deposits since the Cretaceous. Continuing exploration is locating additional uranium occurrences. The deposits outlined so far are being evaluated for their amenability to in situ leaching tests planned for 1982-1983.

Geotechnical conditions in the Lochiel Deposit are somewhat unusual, and thus geotechnical and hydrological investigations have assumed a high priority. The cost of mining the deposit has been shown to be very sensitive to geotechnical design parameters, and it is now seen to be of paramount importance to establish a high level of confidence in the design parameters used for mining cost estimation. Geotechnical investigations in the Lochiel Deposit reached a crossroads in 1985, when there appeared to be several quite different and equally attractive routes to follow to establish a satisfactory level of confidence in geotechnical mine design parameters. Three main options were identified, referred to as the No Further Work Route, the Drill and Trench Route, and the Trial Pit Route. The No Further Work Route was ruled out as being technically unsound and as satisfying none of the Electricity Trust of South Australia's (ETSA's) or the State Government's requirements. A new lead refinery with a capacity of 230,000 tons per year commenced operation at Port Pirie in October, 1959. This plant superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of the continuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content createddifficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was undertaken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic zinc is recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is carried out by batch treatment with caustic soda yielding lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes replace continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. The final stage is a batch process; therefore the product composition can be checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to consumer's specification.Improved casting equipment allows the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs.This, together with the high purity of the lead, assures the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) position in world markets.Automatic control systems are extensively employed, particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.INTRODUCTIONIn December 1956 a decision was made to build at Port Pirie a lead refinery on a completely new site, and in October 1959 the new refinery was brought into operation. The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Continuing the systematic investigation of the influence of elements on the properties of lead(1). If the effects of additions of copper (up to 0.3%) on Port Pirie lead have now been determined in so far as creep rate is concerned.The results in the present paper contain also a survey of the influence of copper on the micro-structure of lead, a feature which has not appeared in the previous papers of this series. Further, it has now become known that creep is but little related to the more usually determined properties such as hardness and tensile strength. Since, however, these properties are of considerable importance in connection with the fabrication and use of this metal. Brinell hardness determinations have also been made and are here included.It is becoming more and more realised also that to be useful, creep data should refer to stresses of the order of those used in practice. This is due to the fact that as soon as deformation takes place, the properties of the metal are automatically changed. Lead does, of course, creep during industrial use, and probably (in lead chamber construction for example) extensions of the order of 5%...
