About 11,000 tons of contaminated zinc flotation concentrate were available in the form of earth walls from dams used for atmospheric drying of the concentrate.Following successful laboratory tests this material was treated in a plant by crushing, grinding, and then flotation in a circuit consisting of roughing, scavenging, and two stages of cleaning. Reagents used were copper sulphate and a little butyl xanthate and frother. About 5,720 tons of zinc concentrate assaying 52· 3 per cent zinc were produced.

Fluidised Bed Combustion technology has expanded since the first fluidised bed boiler steamed in 1974 with 58 companies currently supplying units. In Australia the market has been in small boilers and the goal of a limited attendance coal fired boiler has been achieved. On the world scene, the major incentive for development has been emission control with sulphur capture and low NOX. The potential of significant reduction in plant size is encouraging development of pressurised fluidised bed combustion.

A recently discovered high temperature (22G-2800°C) reaction between glycerol and the oxides and hydrous oxides of iron produces a green, well-crystalline complex glycerato-iron, whereas hydrous nickel oxides an) reduced by the glycerol to metallic nickel. When nickel isomorphously substitutes for iron within the goethite lattice this high temperature glyceration allows a separation of the two metals whereby the nickel can be extracted by solution techniques.

The commissioning organisation and procedures were set up on the basis that commissioning personnel, while being competent, would be unfamiliar with the equipment. Gravity concentration of gold is an important facet of gold processing technology in Western Australia. While great interest has been directed at gold leaching technology and considerable developments achieved, gravity concentration has received much less attention and this paper provides an update on the current practice and developments that have been achieved in recent years.A survey of 72 gold processing plants in Western Australia was conducted in 1991 and some 31 questionnaires were returned for analysis. Of these, 19 plants were using gravity concentration and this paper highlights some of the features of these operations.

The developments in hydrocyclone classification in the milling circuit at Bougainville Copper Limited are discussed. A major change in cyclone size and improve- ments in operating conditions have been made. Test work has been carried out to assess the classification performance of a modified Linatex cyclone, Wemco cyclones and a two stage cycloning circuit. The use of a scalping cyclone, to remove coarse material from the present overflow product for regrind, has also been investigated.

Heavy mineral deposits accumulate on shorelines with interrupted sediment input. Beach deposits, which form on shallowly dipping coastal plains, are most favourable. However, shallow shelves seaward of cliffed coastlines are known to contain economic deposits. Most DRI is produced using gas-based processes and is used as a feedstock in electric arc steel furnaces, otherwise known as mini-mills. Graded macadam slag base has been used successfully by the Department of Main Roads, N.S.W., in the construction of Expressways. However, the use of graded macadam in urban conditions introduces problems which can be avoided by the use of material meeting the specification outlined in M.R. Form 744. This paper outlines the rationale behind the technical requirements of the specification for the "Supply of natural gravel or crushed rock for road pavement (bitumen surfaced) M.R. Form 744". A blend of materials produced from slag is proposed as a potential solution for the production of slag base which would be suitable for use in urban construction or maintenance of roads.

Effective selective mining relies heavily on high quality geological data and assay data. Such assay data is dependent on effective sampling protocols, sample preparation techniques, assaying practices and well founded quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures. This paper describes recent developments in grade control sampling at PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals high-grade Kencana gold mine at Gosowong Indonesia and presents a case study in identifying, minimising and monitoring random and systematic sampling error including the use of duplicate sampling and the Thompson Howarth technique for quantifying random sampling error.

The variation of austenitic grain size with temperature for the steels XKSlSO and XK9261 was determined using the vacuum ctching technique.It is shown that the effect of temperature on the mean grain intercept is relatively small, up to approximately 950°C. Above this temperature the rate of increase of grain size rises sharply.Within the limits of the 1-4 hr vacuum etching times used the effect of time at temperature is relatively small on the ASTM grain size of the steels.

The strength and deformation of more than two hundred coal samples have been tested in the condition of triaxial compression. The regression equation showing the relationship between coal strength and pressure in the pores, as well as confining pressure, was obtained. The appropriate calculation for stress-strain curve was carried out. Further, an analysis shows the variation of coal strength and its modulus of elasticity in methane medium.

L44 Shaft is a major upcast ventilation shalt in the hanging wall of the 1100 Orebody. Various techniques for stripping a raisebored pilot hole were combined to produce L44 shaft. From the surface to 198 m depth, the shaft was concrete lined 7.3 m internal diameter. Below this the shaft was developed to 7.6 m diameter unlined. 11 level, 540 m below the surface, was the first readily accessible level connection. The section to 198 m depth was benched and concrete lined through weak oxidised ground. When more competent ground was encountered the operation was converted to horadiam stripping. This application of the raiseborer has led to a safer, more efficient method of shaft development.

This paper describes a multi-lift bench stoping method introduced recently to extract the narrow silver-lead-zinc orebodies at the Isa Lead Mine. Cut-and-fill methods were chief mining methods for the narrow orebodies at the mine over 35 years ago. Benching methods were introduced approximately two decades later, and quickly replacing the cut-and-fill methods. The benching methods had improved both the economy scale and safety of the mining operation. The multi-lift benching method combines a number of bench lifts into a single stope to further improve the operational efficiency. Three stopes in the initial multi-lift benching trials are described.

This paper addresses; land use, rehabilitation and the State/Federal regulatory process, in light of Australia signing various international conventions and agreements in the area of environmental protection. The conventions on biological diversity, climate change and the implications of the Rio and Agenda 21 declarations are examined. The implementation of these initiatives through the Inter-Governmental Agreement on the Environment, and through legistlative mechanisms at Federal and State level is explored.Particular attention is given to the biodiversity strategy in context of the need to integrate economic aspirations and environmental concerns as a basis for sustsainable development. The paper concludes with a brief comparison of the major approval processes in each State, relating to mining environmental issues.
