Desktop X-ray powder diffraction using a D2 PHASER equipped with fast linear detector was performed on several iron ore and mill scale samples. Data were analysed using cluster analysis and Rietveld quantitative phase analysis. The quantitative mineralogy of both materials could be established. Thus the input is provided for understanding the energy consumption and the CO2 emission during iron production. Furthermore, tabletop XRD allows to distinguish iron ore from mill scales and to quantify their mixtures.

The Northside Storage Tunnel (NST) is the largest tunnelling project ever undertaken in Sydney. The tunnel extends deep underground from the western bank of the Lane Cove river to the North Head sewage treatment plant (STP), with a branch tunnel from Scotts Creek connecting to the main tunnel under Tunks Park. The aim of the tunnel is to intercept wet weather overflows from four key points along the northernsuburbs ocean outfall sewer (NSOOS) and provide short-term storage and transfer of sewage to NorthHead STP for treatment prior to discharge to the ocean through the deep ocean outfall. The project was an ambitious undertaking by an alliance between the client Sydney WaterCorporationand the engineering firms of Montgomery Watson, Connell Wagner and Transfield to design andconstruct approximately 20 kilometres of tunnel, tunnel declines and shafts in just over three years. In order to achieve this tight timeframe construction of the NST has been undertaken simultaneously at seven construction sites located across the northern suburbs of Sydney. As with most tunnelling operations, tunnel boring machines (TBMÆs) and roadheaders dominated the excavation activities. Tunks Park and North Head STP are the major tunnelling sites. An access decline was excavated using roadheaders at both of these sites to facilitate tunnelling using TBMÆs. Three TBMÆs 3.8 m, 6.0 m and 6.3 m diameter) were launched from Tunks Park and one TBM (6.5 m diameter) was launched from North Head. At the overflow interception sites of Scotts Creek, Lane Cove River and Quakers Hat Bay two vertical shafts known as drop and access/ventilation shafts were constructed. These shafts would provide the linkage between the existing sewer and the tunnel. As their names suggest the drop shaft would convey the wet weather sewage overflows to the tunnel while the access/ventilation shaft would provide access during dry weather and ventilation during a filling event. The fourth overflow site of Tunks Park would use the tunnel decline as its link to the tunnel. Originally these shafts were to be excavated using the raise bore method. This technique however, is entirely dependent on the TBMÆs reaching the shaft locations at the specified time. This was not the case at two of the three shaft excavation locations and top down methods of excavation such as, a percussive cone fracturing (PCF), blind bore, mechanical excavation and drill and blast were investigated to ensure the project met its completion schedule. Traditionally project decisions are dominated by cost and schedule objectives. The contractual arrangement of the Alliance however, required that the objectives of safety, community and environment also be considered in any decision making process. Thus each of these top down methods of excavation were assessed against these five objectives. On considering all of these factors the use of explosives was considered to be the superior technique.

Despite advances in technology, the Australian underground coal mining industry continues to have incidents involving spontaneous combustion. Managing these incidents relies heavily on understanding the state of the event as it develops and controls are applied. Gas analysis plays a major role in aiding this interpretation. This interpretation is based upon laboratory testing of coal samples under conditions very different to those found in an underground coal mine. This paper will explore the links between laboratory data and actual events. It will highlight the difficulties of using laboratory data. It will outline the relevance of laboratory data and how it can be usefully applied to manage spontaneous combustion events as well as in establishing relevant trigger action response plans to facilitate early detection and control of such events. The paper will identify some of the factors that need to be applied when adapting laboratory data to apply to the underground coal mine. It will outline the need for comprehensive knowledge of the local conditions and gas concentrations to be expected at all locations in an underground coal mine. Further, it will demonstrate the need for mine environment monitoring to go beyond simply measuring gas concentrations but also to include reliable atmospheric pressure, temperature and air velocity monitoring.CITATION:Cliff, D, 2013. The need for ventilation around mine workings derives from the various gases found in mine atmospheres and CH4, the principal diluent is in quantity depending upon several factors. Several of these are seam thickness, depth of cover and working method and the French Regulations typify controls on coal mine ventilation. There are many factors affecting production of CH4, in addition to coal production, such as the geological setting of the working seam, the geometry of workings and the rates of advance. The quality of the external water source for a mineral processing plant may influence the extent to which the environmentally desirable practice of recycling of water from plant products is possible. This is particularly likely for froth flotation plants where the chemical quality of the water may affect the plantÆs performance. The quality of the external water source or the recycled water can be improved by a water treatment step, and in turn the extent of recycling which can be tolerated is able to be influenced. The quality of the external water can range from very high quality, soft water derived from melting snow, to poor quality, hard water (high levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium) from underground aquifers, and to even lower quality sea water (very high levels of dissolved species including sodium chloride). It can be noted that some underground water is more saline than ocean water as well as containing high levels of dissolved calcium and magnesium. Occasionally, a different source of water is utilised in the wet and the dry seasons. Increasingly, sewage water from cities is becoming a potential external water source with sustainability implications. If the initial quality of the external water is high, the scope for recycling of water from all the products is maximised. Such reuse or recycling of water from the products allows chemical species from oxidation of the ore and from other inputs to the process such as reagents to increase in concentration in the water returned to the plant. Such accumulation of species can have negative effects on the performance of a process such as froth flotation but instances of positive effects exist. Some reagents which are used in flotation plants such as lime or sodium carbonate also happen to be commonly used for independent water treatment plants. Hence, the flotation process may inadvertently provide some aspects of water processing. Where the quality of the water in the feed to a mineral processing plant (external water plus recycled water) is not an issue, more powerful solid-liquid separation processes can be considered to maximise the removal of water from the products and its reuse. Such processes may also have complementary benefits in a sustainable mineral industry by, for example, producing a tailing stream with a higher per cent solid value which is more suitable for safe storage on the surface or underground. This paper documents findings on the effect of water quality on the flotation process. It also considers current directions of change in the need for increased removal of water from plant products. It then considers the implications of these trends for maximisation of water recycling by such operations.

David Pollard will raise this matter in more aetail in a later paper, but mere are some obvious points that I wish to make. It is a relatively straightforward exercise to assess the competency at a low level in the workplace where the consequences of a worker's actions can be observed immediately. Assessing competency at higher levels which may involve creative, planning, design or supervisory functions is more difficult, especially where managerial responsibility and accountability for the output of others is involved. This is generally the case with the daily activities of most mining professionals, whether they be in operations, in a consulting capacity, in research, or in government.

These may be found with goethite through mechanisms including direct substitution or coprecipitation of nanocrystalline phases. Understanding P incorporation in goethite has significant implications for Australia’s iron ore industry as it lowers their commodity value. The current study tests a novel low-temperature technique to extract P impurities from synthetic goethite phases under O2-free ambient conditions by utilising Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of the Fe(II)-catalysed recrystallisation of goethite on the geochemical behaviour (mobility and speciation) of co-associated P. To achieve this, we tracked changes in labile P (aqueous and 1M NaOH extractable) concentrations over time in goethite suspensions which were reacted with Fe(II)aq for 14 days under circumneutral pH conditions and room temperature conditions. Temporal changes in Fe mineralogy were investigated via synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Iron K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy confirmed goethite as the only mineral phase in P-free treatments while goethite (~86 per cent) and feroxyhyte (~14 per cent) were the main phases in 1.0 per cent P-containing treatments after a 14- day reaction with Fe(II)aq. According to our findings, the treatment of P-goethite with Fe(II) for a duration of 7–14 days, followed by a 24-hour extraction of the reacted solids using 1M NaOH, results in the removal of approximately 79.5 per cent of the initial P content. This removal encompasses both the aqueous fraction (~4.5 per cent) and the surface adsorbed fraction (~75 per cent) from the 1 per cent P-bearing mineral phase. Notably, this approach demonstrates an improvement in P extractability, with approximately a 10 per cent increase compared to the 1 per cent P-goethite sample that was not reacted with Fe(II).

On 15 August 1998 the first section of the PUTRA LRT system was opened to the public as a free service prior to official commencement of revenue service on 1 September 1998. It is a remarkable achievement to open a highly advanced medium capacity urban railway scheme in four years after the outline concept began. Even more remarkable is the implementation of the next stage which is the underground section planned to be operational in mid-1999. The decision to build the first underground railway in any major urban centre is a technical challenge. The PUTRA LRT System can be likened to Hong Kong when the initial MTR system began in the 1970s and Singapore MRT in the 1980s. Prior to the PUTRA railway very little bored tunnelling had been undertaken in Kuala Lumpur. A few shallow sewer tunnels had been built but the main experience of tunnelling in Malaysia had been for water, hydroelectric and road tunnels usually through granite formations. The ground conditions in Kuala Lumpur were known mainly from experience of piled foundations and occasional deep excavations. The suitability and likely difficulties to be experienced during bored tunnelling could only be theoretically predicted. In both Hong Kong and Singapore, government owned corporations were set up to implement the scheme, but in Kuala Lumpur the whole project has been undertaken by a private company PUTRA, a wholly owned subsidiary of Renong Berhad.

Mine Dewatering for reoccupation of a flooded mine requires rehabilitation and recommissioning of shaft and sane level functions to provide safe efficient access, services and logistics, as well as securing connections with all exposed workings. The objective is the earliest secure reoccupation of the target depth horizon for minimum water pumping, consistent with an appropriate investment and optimum schedule of operating inputs to the dewatering, redevelopment, services and consolidation processes. Strategy must focus on recommissioning of relevant functions in the shaft and at stage pumping horizons, advance of logistics close to pumping and rehabilitation, management of the secured exposed workings. The progress must be systematic, sustained and integrated, and must be secured against risk and uncertainty. There must be a strategic capability to respond effectively, and manage interruptions to processes, conditions requiring higher or different resources, and contingencies which affect schedule, budget or risk profile for the continuing programme. Planning must aim to reduce or contain risk or uncertainty elements and contingencies, limit interruption frequency and severity, identify and provide the capability for efficient responses. It is appropriate to model and simulate the reoccupation analogous to a mine initial development production programme. Only minor changes to relationships and relativities of models for Capital works, Operations (Production and Development) and Services/Logistics are needed but the model for management of workings is more relevant than that for depleted workings in an operating mine because of the water and other transfers. An important difference is the unsteady state of operations which requires probabilistic modelling of availability and utilization of equipment and processes.

Mining operations in arid regions are compelled to reduce their consumption of fresh water. Closed water circuits are an attractive solution and, in addition to reducing freshwater consumption, have the added benefit of reducing reagent consumption as well as the environmental impact by eliminating effluent discharge. Accumulating ionic species have been shown to hinder collector adsorption which reduces the recovery of valuable minerals. Numerous studies have investigated the effect of degrading water quality on collector adsorption however there is very limited understanding as to how this takes place from an electrochemical perspective. This study therefore aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying concentrations affects the electrochemical adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto galena. The synthetic plant water used in this study comprised of single salt solutions to isolate the effects of the ionic species of interest. The ionic strengths were varied between 0.0242 M, 0.0727 M, 0.1212 M and 0.2426 M which correspond to University of Cape Town (UCT) Centre for Minerals Research (CMR) synthetic plant waters of 1, 3, 5 and 10SPW, respectively. Mineral rest potentials indicated how changing water quality affected xanthate-mineral interactions. Microflotation observed the impact of changing water quality on mineral floatability.

Transformations of minerals to processed mineral products fundamentally involve wholesale chemical change, and therefore have a high potential for the release of chemicals and wastes. In this regard minerals processing contrasts with downstream production operations, which involve mainly physical changes. The contrast with mining, which must take place where the minerals are found, is that mineral processing allows choices as to location, processes, fuels and reductants. These choices provide a foundation for dealing with issues of resource stewardship. This paper locates the mineral processing industry in the global perspective by quantifying the masses of major material inputs and outputs, based on current processing choices. Estimates for recycling have also been collated, revealing figures that differ surprisingly from commonly held impressions. The paper draws on a variety of current sources, mainly those available through the Internet, to rank the major transformed virgin mineral products by production, price and value. The figures demonstrate the dominance of Portland cement and steel in the global environmental impacts of mineral processing. Aluminium comes a distant third in the list, and the metals particularly associated with localised environmental impacts have relatively small global effects compared with those of the staple materials of our built environment. This global macro input/output perspective, with materials flows expressed per unit of virgin product, provides a benchmark for grasping sustainability challenges within specific operating businesses. Because of the global scope and pervasive impact of the minerals processing industry, the issue of resource stewardship is rising as a matter for public concern. There appears to be a developing view that the mining and mineral processing sector should take responsibility for these products throughout their various life cycles. However, in a future of stabilising consumption, dematerialisation and intensive recycling, the mining industry would only need to provide the top-up to a stock of recirculating materials. The question of responsibility for stewardship over SocietyÆs stock of materials remains open.

The redevelopment of the Telfer Gold Mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia was primarily based on the construction of a 17 Mtpa dual train concentrator coupled with open pit and underground mining operations. The unique copper-gold orebody at Telfer requires the application of complex flotation conditions normally reserved for base metal concentrators, where two competing minerals are managed into separate products. Pumping water for dewatering and water supply is a major component of electricity consumption at mining operations and hence is a significant contributor of greenhouse gas emissions. Pump systems at a typical mine site can be broadly split between above ground centrifugal pumps (generally used for water transfer) and submersible borehole pumps (generally for dewatering and/or water supply). In contrast to above ground pumps, submersible borehole pumps can be subjected to varying duty points (total pumping head and flow requirements) as a result of changing bore water levels and yields, particularly in mine dewatering bores. Typically, much higher pumping rates are required at the commencement of dewatering to remove groundwater storage and to intercept sufficient groundwater throughflow to achieve target drawdowns. Once target drawdown levels are reached it often only requires much lower pumping rates to maintain target drawdowns. Pumps sized to remove the large initial volumes of stored groundwater often end up too large for the lower flow rate required for æmaintenance pumpingÆ. This often results in pumps operating inefficiently, a problem which can be made worse when pumps are throttled to reduce the pump output to better match the reduced bore yield. Current standard operating practice places little emphasis on the electricity consumed by pumps, with the focus often being on minimising capital expenditure (æIf it ainÆt broke donÆt fix itÆ). Submersible pumps can have extended service lives of ten to 20+ years. However as the capital cost of a pump typically represents only five per cent of the life cycle cost, the vast majority of the life cycle cost is energy usage.Through the implementation of a regular review of the operation of borehole pumps, significant reductions in electricity use and associated greenhouse gas emissions can be achieved without impacting the dewatering schedule. In most cases, the capital cost of replacing pumps is more than offset by savings in operating costs. These potential savings become even more significant when considering proposed future carbon tax levees.This paper presents examples of the opportunities for significant reductions in energy, greenhouse gas emissions and overall costs that can be achieved for a range of dewatering scenarios.

Performance trials followed the commissioning of three large mine fans at Mount Isa in 1965. Actual performance characteristics were determined. These were in good agreement with predicted performance.
