I report results of over 850 microprobe analyses of sulfides, sulfosalts and electrum from the Favona adularia-sericite epithermal deposit of the Waihi district in the southern Hauraki Goldfield of New Zealand. Pyrite and marcasite from altered wall rocks that enclose the veins are stoichiometric, with compositions of FeS2, and no significant trace elements. In contrast, pyrite in veins commonly contains appreciable As (up to 3.2 wt per cent), and locally contains several tenths of a percent of Cu, Zn, Co, Ag and Sb. Vein pyrite may contain up to 0.22 per cent Au, but Au contents do not show a positive correlation with As. Limited electrum data indicate that it ranges from Ag0.47 Au0.53 to Ag0.54Au0.41Cu0.01Zn0.04. Chalcopyrite is stoichiometric CuFeS2, and most galena is PbS, but some galena contains up to 4.4 wt per cent Se, which substitutes for S in its lattice. The galena is not argentiferous; the highest Ag content is 0.45 wt per cent Ag. Sphalerite averages 4 mol per cent FeS, but ranges up to 15 mol per cent. Tetrahedrites [(Cu,Ag)10(Zn,Fe)2(As,Sb)4S13] show variable substitution, but most are Cu- Zn- and Sb-rich. Veins also contain aguilarite (Ag4SeS), stromeyerite (CuAgS), naumannite (Ag2Se), and mckinstryite [(Ag,Cu)2S].

The title of this address was selected before I had an opportunity to consider in detail the matters that I would like to discuss. Accordingly, I chose a very broad subject-so broad indeed that it would be foolhardy for me to attempt to deal with more than a few aspects of it. I do not propose to touch. at all on the developments to date of our mining and metallurgical enterprises, beyond paying a sincere tribute'to the skill and enterprise of those who have established an international reputation for Australian mining and metallurgy. I would rather look ahead and discuss certain factors that will play a decisive part in the future development of our mineral resources. I do this in no dogmatic spirit, and I hope that my remarks may lead to discussions which will stimulate action where it is needed.In recent years my colleagues and I have been forced by circumstances to give consideration to problems in the fields of mining and geology, and in process metallurgy, which lie outside the scope of our own research work. People come to us with metallurgical problems because they know of no more appropriate place to go, and it is distressing to have to inform them that it is nobody's job to offer them advice and assistance. I want to suggest to your Institute that it should press strongly for the provision of properresearch facilities for the mining and metallurgical industries, such as aready exist in most enlightened countries. In such countries, those connected with the development of mineral resources are able to obtain information and advice from Geological Surveys, Mines Departments or Bureaux of Mines, which offer far more comprehensive services than are available in this country.Before discussing specific technical problems of the mining and minerals industries, I shall enunciate certain general principles that I believe should be followed in respect to the technical side of the development of all Australian industries. The problem can, I suggest, be considered in three parts-technical education production, and research. I shall confine my remarks mostly to the research aspect, for it is with this that I am most familiar.For the efficient development of any industry in Australia, it is essential firstly that We should learn what is going on abroad, and secondly that we should simultaneously conduct independent research. The experience of Grey River Gold MiningLimited in pursuing these statutory approvals has identified weaknesses and strengths in the present system and problems which need to be resolved. The Company has learnt lessons, which if heeded, will assist future large scale alluvial mining projects.

Disequilibrium ratios (U3O8/eU3O8), which assess the degree to which gamma activity represents the uranium content of a sample, have been measured on a representative set of samples from the ore zone of a carnotite ranium deposit located at Yeelirrie, Western Australia. A statistical analysis has been performed to investigate the dependence of the ratios on lithology and on the location of the sample in the orebody. The analysis indicates that dependence on lithology and on position across the orebody is negligible. Samples from the western end of the orebody and those from below the water table level tend to have slightly lower ratios than samples from other positions, although these trends are small compared with a large random variation in the data. The large random variation could result from some redistribution of the daughter isotopes of uranium within the orebody. On the basis of the results from all the samples, the estimated deficiency of uranium relative to radium in the ore zone of the deposit is 11 per cent.

During recent years there has been a marked increase in the use of explosives in Queensland coal mines. Delay detonators have been introduced and their use has extended with the wider application of mechanised methods of mining.The need for careful study of the characteristics of delay detonators is stressed so that the advantages of simultaneous firing, from the points of view of safety and efficiency, may be obtained. With their use new potential hazards are introduced. These hazardsare considered and means whereby the overall safety may be improved are discussed.The increase in the number of misfires since the introduction of delay detonators is shown and the examination of misfired detonators is described. Lessons to be learned! from these misfires are noted and details are given of the essential requirements for safe and efficient blasting using delay detonators.INTRonUCTIONOne of the aims of mechanization in coal mines is to reduce the physical effort applied to the winning of coal. Explosives play an important part in achieving this and, following the introduction of power borers for the drilling of shot-holes in Queensland coal mines, much of the arduous work associated with coal getting has been eased. During recent years there has been a marked increase in the consumption of explosives, as shown in Table 1, and it must be the aim of all to use these explosives safely and efficiently. Economic gold mineralisation was discovered at Round Hill by Homestake NZ Limited in 1984 and was subsequently put into production by Macraes Mining Company Limited (MMCL) in 1990. The total mineral resource in 1990 was estimated at 41.4 Mt @ 1.42 glt at a 0.7g/t cut off, for 1.8 Moz of gold. Since project start up the mill has been upgraded twice to increase throughput and reached its current capacity of 3.2 Mtpa. At 31 December 1996, a total of 16.2 Mt of ore at average grade of 1.73 g/t has been excavated, yielding 655,000 oz of gold. MMCL began exploration along the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone in 1994. Since 1994, exploration has been successful with the discovery of over 3.5 Moz of gold. The resource now stands at 110 Mt @ 1.46 g/t gold for 5.1 Moz. This success has led to a planned expansion of the processing capacity to 9 Mtpa with the building of a new 6 Mtpa processing plant.

The seams of black coal occurring in Victoria are so disturbed by faulting, wash-outs, thinning, etc., that it is necessary, for the prevention of costly errors in development, that close boring be undertaken so that the correct positions of the shafts, tunnels, main and auxiliary roadways can be set out in order that the area can be economically worked. The State Coal Mine has two boring plants continuously at work, which have given good service for the last twenty-five years.The information supplied herein is merely our experience in boring at the State Coal Mine over an extended period. The type of plant in use is that known as the Victoria Drilling Plant, equipped with an 11 h.p. portable oil engine, using power kerosene as fuel. It was purchased in 1914, complete with mechanism for cable drilling, capable of boring to a depth of 1500 ft. with a guarantee of 1000 ft., with Calyx cutters, boring rods and all necessary equipment for the sum of £1473. The chief mechanical features of the plant are as follows:-The derrick is in the shape of a tripod (see Fig. 1), two of the legs being of steel channel built together to form a frame which, when lowered on to two sets of road wheels, forms a carriage for the transport of a portion of the boring equipment. The third leg is made of oregon in the form of a double bow, with bolts and distance pieces between the wooden sides. The top of this is hinged on to the steel frame, and the bottom is fitted into a cast iron block, having two small wheels to facilitate erection. In the Archaean of the Kalgoorlie-Norseman area, the layered rocks have been subdivided into two sequences, both containing basic igneous rocks and sediments. The lower sequence is distinguished by the presence of acid volcanic flows and large acid sills. The upper sequence is unconformable on the lower one.In some areas, clastic sediments become coarser and pass into conglomerates. Th:s passage is accompanied by thinning of the beds.These features and their distribution suggest a basin of subsidence flanked by areas of shore-line conditions.Repeated igneous activity, including vulcanism, has occurred along the flanks of this basin. These different igneous and sedimentary environments have played an important part in the primary distribution of metals.A chronology of all basic and acid igneous activity, as well as sedimentat:on, has been established for the Precambrian of this area.INTRODUCTIONThe subdivision of Archaean rocks into those of basic igneous or of sedimentary origin has formed the basis for the nomenclature appearing in past literature. These subdivisions were distinguished as greenstones (predominantly basic igneous rocks) and whitestones (predominantly sediments), and it was generally accepted that the greenstones were stratigraphically lower in the sequence than the whitestones.Recent studies show that, between Kalgoorlie and Norseman, basic igneous rocks interfinger with and pass laterally to sediments, and that basic volcanic rocks occur at different stratigraphic levels. Sulfide chimney samples collected during the 1998 - 1999 R/V Atlantis û DSV Alvin 3 - 30 research cruise have been examined and classified into four types, based on common characteristics. Chimney morphology is the most important characteristic and resulted in the following groups: 1. flutes, 2. cones, 3. wide-flats, and 4. beehives. Other characteristics resulted in the classification of subgroups within the flute, cone and wide-flat groups. The combination of characteristics, including; the presence of an orifice, internal chimney fabrics, wall thickness, extent of weathering, and the presence of Alvinella worm casts, enable evolutionary trends between the different chimneys types to be established. These trends indicate that with time, flutes evolve from immature zoned chimneys with a central orifice and smooth thin-walls, into cone chimneys with thick walls and massive fabrics which have their orifices infilled by massive sulfides, and a rough exterior. Repeated mineralisation within, cones may result in the formation of wide-flat chimneys. Beehive chimneys can form at any time during chimney growth.

SOME notes on the works of the Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia will no doubt be of interest to members of the Institute, more especially as much of the work is new to Australasia. As many of the members who may read this paper have not been in a position to visit works of this kind, and are consequently not thoroughly acquainted with all the operations carried on, the author has taken the liberty, in some cases, to enter into explanation which would otherwise be unnecessary. The works are situated at Port Kembla (New South Wales), about fifty miles south of Sydney, and are approachable both by rail and water. The Government has recently built a low-level jetty upwards of five hundred feet long, and intends installing at an early date an electrically operated portable crane to facilitate the handling of material to and from the boats. This will mean: a considerable reduction in the length of time that boats are laid up at the jetty. It has long been recognised that Australia can benefit substantially in an economic sense from its rich resource base. The significant resources of the Gippsland Basin are a good example of the wealth of this nation. As cited in popular debate, Australia must value-add to its natural resources to ensure its long term economic prosperity. The significant oil, gas and coal resources of the Gippsland Basin have provided the Strategic Research Foundation with the basis for two major research and development initiatives ensuring the long term economic development of the Basin and Australia. The gas and coal reserves of the Basin together with the area's extensive history in electricity generation provide the rationale for establishing Ceramic Fuel Cells Ltd. A consortium comprising Australia's leading industrialist - BHP, State energy authorities and the Nation's major research and development organisations, has formed Ceramic Fuel Cells to undertake and manage research, development and commercialisation of solid oxide (ceramic) fuel cells which convert fossil fuels directly to electricity with greater efficiency and less pollution than existing technologies. The oil and gas resources of the Basin together with the valuable experience of the operators in recovering these resources, have provided the impetus to investigate the feasibility of a Marine Engineering Research Centre. The commercially oriented research, education and training objectives of the Centre are well supported by the leading industrialists in related industries.

Gippsland has perhaps the most colourful history of exploration of any area in Australia. Hydrocarbons were first discovered in the Gippsland Basin in 1924 when a water well at Lakes Entrance encountered oil and gas shows. In 1942, the Commonwealth and Victorian Governments, in an effort to supplement a wartime oil shortage, sank a shaft near this well and produced 8000 barrels of low gravity oil up to 1956, when the field was abandoned. A total of 64 shallow wells had been drilled in the Lakes Entrance area by that time. Elsewhere in the onshore Gippsland Basin, 30 wells were drilled from 1925 to 1941. In 1960 BHP Ltd was granted an exploration permit covering much of the offshore area of the Gippsland Basin. Esso Australia Ltd joined BHP in 1964 and drilled the Barracouta-1 gas discovery in 1965. Since then over 100 exploration and appraisal wells have been drilled in the basin resulting in the discovery to date of some 3.6 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 8.8 trillion cubic feet of recoverable gas (Current remaining recoverable reserves are 906 million barrels of oil and 5.7 TCF of gas). Exploration in the offshore areas is actively continuing today and new discoveries are still being made.

The changes in layout and design over 48 years, from the first crushing and shiploading plant installed at Whyalla in 1915, up to the present plant being built at Koolan Island, Yampi Sound may be summarized as follows.1. Smaller motors and lower power consumption have resulted froma. oil lubrication, where practicable, in place of grease,b. a high pressure "oil-lift" device to reduce starting torque in crushers with white metal bearings, andc. roller bearings in place of white metal.2. Short centre drives with pivot-based motors permit controlled loads on bearings and a reduction in size of crusher houses and motor rooms.3. Dust proofing and pressurising of crusher houses and motor rooms reduces working temperatures and improves cleanliness.4. Variable speed pan feeders give improved plant control, with the use of one man only, and remove the need for large surge bins between crushing stages.5. The use of diesel quarry trucks to dump ore through a "drive over"tip results in faster truck cycles.6. Elevated cylindrical silos with air operated chutes, replace long horizontal storage bins with multiple manually operated side discharge chutes for loading rail cars, and give faster and more accurate truck loading. The silos are charged by belt conveyors with automatic distributors.7. Increased shipping bin capacity (40,000 tons at Whyalla and 6O,OOO tons being built at Koolan Island) caters for the bigger vessels now in use and envisaged for the future. Automatic travelling distributors deliver ore to the bins in layers to ensure, maximum mixing and a more uniform grade for blast furnaces.INTRODUCTIONThe Broken Hill Proprietary Company Ltd has six major crushing plants in Australia at its principal sources of raw material. These are at Iron Knob bench G, Iron Knob scree ore plant, Iron Baron, and Cockatoo Island, all of which are ironstone operations. The other two plants are at Rapid Bay, a limestone quarry, and at Ardrossan, which is the Company's only source of dolomite.

The theme of the conference is "excellence", an epithet of special significance in tertiary education. It appears in the mission statements, goals and plans to achieve them of most, and quite possibly all, tertiary institutions in Australia. In the context of excellence, this paper examines the current statue of professional education in the principal mining industry related discipline of Mining Engineering. It furthermore, identifies and discusses a number of special problems in mining education that the tertiary sector has long endured. Some of these problems are becoming acute, and solutions will have to be found soon in order for the industry to be assured of the supply of well motivated and appropriately qualified young engineers and scientists necessary to achieve and maintain the excellent to which it aspires.

A review of historic mining information and geological literature pertaining to the Alpine Mine, Lyell Goldfield has been completed. As a result of this work the Alpine reef is inferred to be associated with an upright anticline with a sub-horizontal axis. Structural profiles prepared from limited underground data indicate that the reef is subparallel to the eastern limb of the anticline and cuts across the western limb. Reassessment of structural mapping completed by the New Zealand Geological Survey indicates that Greenland Group metasediments within the Lyell Goldfield are folded into a series of opposed assymetic folds with sub-horizontal axes. It is suggested that the anticline which harbours the Alpine Reef is located on the axis of a synclinorium. Along the western limb of the synclinorium the subsidiary folds have steep west dipping limbs and shallow east dipping limbs (western sense of assymmetry) whereas shallow west dips and steep east dips are typical of the eastern limb. The notion of quartz mineralisation occupying the axis of a synclinorium is contrary to the situation in the Reefton Goldfield where quartz mineralisation is affiliated with folds associated with an anticlinorium. Historic mine data reveals that below No.4 Level the quartz-gold mineralisation, in the Alpine Mine, occupied a steeply dipping ore channel. The strike of the channel was to the northwest and within this structure the are shoots plunged to the north at approximately 40¦. Archival mine plans show that two quartz bodies, the North and South Blocks, were present at No. 4 Level. Although the North Block was followed down to No 14 Level (530 m vertically below the surface outcrop) the South Block was only mined as far as No 7 Level. Sampling on No 7 Level together with the results of trial mining suggest that the grade of quartz underfoot in South Block is low. Information from the Mines Statements and mapping undertaken by the Gold Prospecting Scheme reveals that faulting had a profound influence on the intregity and extent of the Alpine Reef. The reef occupies a Inajor shear zone but little is known about it. It is also apparent that below No 7 Level the reef was progressively shattered by faulting and this may be the chief reason for the decrease in grade in the lower levels of the mine. No substantive facts are available about wall rock alteration effects adjacent to the Alpine Reef Still this is not surprising considering that comments on the mineralised pug envelope and breccias adjacent to the mined quartz shoots at the Globe - Progress Prospect were omitted from contemporary publications. In spite of this the existance of sulphide bearing reef casing lithologies cannot be completely dismissed since 9.15 m of 'reef track' has been reported in Reids No 2 Level.

The pressure of low commodity prices forced the design process for the second lift of Northparkes E26 Mine to adopt a continuous improvement philosophy. The emphasis was to minimise capital expenditure while still maintaining the excellent low operating costs achieved on Lift 1. Although the first block cave lift at Northparkes is the most productive underground mine in the world and is held up as a benchmark for the use of technology in mining, areas for improvement were identified. Every area was critically assessed and investigated for the possible application of new techniques and technologies. Key learnings from the construction and production phases of Lift 1 were captured, documented and used as the starting point for the Lift 2 design. This paper shows how and why the design parameters initially used onLift 1 were changed to become the current E26 Lift 2 developmentproposal. The main differences between the two block caves arehighlighted. Most epithermal Au-Ag deposits in the Hauraki Goldfield are hosted in late Miocene andesites. Broken Hills is an exception, being one of the few economic deposits hosted in rhyolite. Investigation of Broken Hills provides the opportunity to collate structural data that may be compared with that collected from andesite-hosted deposits in order to evaluate the importance of rock type on vein development. The rhyolite host rock at Broken Hills is strongly flow-banded, but this anisotropy does not appear to affect the orientation of mineralised structures. There is a range of structures at Broken Hills: veins, faults, fractures, and large breccia pipes. Veins generally strike north-south, with localised changes in strike and thickness. Slip vectors determined from striations indicate near pure dipslip on the main lode, indicating an extensional tectonic setting. The orientations of vein deflections are parallel to slip vectors. This correlation is common in modern extensional fault arrays where fault growth and linkage produces subvertical deflections in fault orientation (eg TVZ). There are three main types of breccias: 1. Primary breccias related to rhyolite emplacement. 2. Jigsaw type secondary breccias that are that developed during the life of the hydrothermal system. 3. Breccia pipes. Broken Hills was a dynamic epithermal mineralising system.

Gold is extracted by cyanidation of a sulphide-rich concentrate at Macraes mine, and after cyanidation, the concentrate is discharged to tailings impoundments. The concentrate tailings were discharged to a dedicated concentrate impoundment from 1989 to 1993, afterwhich they were blended with the flotation tailings. Since mid-1998, concentrate tailings have been redirected to the dedicated concentrate impoundment. The concentrate tailings contain up to 1 ppm gold, and will be reprocessed in the future. However, it is a regulatory requirement that a contingency plan be in place to rehabilitate the concentrate tailings should the mine operation cease for any reason. Initial predictions suggested that the sulphide-rich tailings would oxidise and acidify, creating a potential long term environmental problem. Investigations of the state of the tailings after 4 years show that these predictions were overly conservative. Only minor oxidation has occurred in the upper 2 metres of the tailings where the pH has locally dropped from 10 (discharge condition) to between 7 and 8. Below 2 metres, the tailings are essentially unchanged from their deposition state. The low rate of change in the tailings is due to their very low permeability which in turn is a consequence of the fine grain size (ca. 15 ¦m). Dewatering is extremely slow, and incursion of oxygenated water is negligible. Calculations suggest that water movement over 30 m will take at least 100 years and possibly 1000 years. The contingency plan is to capitalise on the very low permeability and keep the tailings from drying with a semipermeable cap. A layer of limestone will be added to the top of the tailings, beneath the cap, to enhance alkalinity of any percolating water. If acidification does occur, contrary to expectations, any acid produced will be neutralised by underlying calcite-bearing schist, schist in the concentrate impoundment wall, and the flotation tailings immediately downstream. In addition, dilution by alkaline ground and surface waters would further ameliorate any acidic discharge.

Mining is taking place at increasing depths of cover on the Southern Coalfield beneath predominantly massive sandstone strata. Within the next twenty years, there will be longwall mining at depths greater than 600 m. As the Sydney Metropolitan area continues to expand and as coal mining approaches these urban areas subsidence will continue to become an increasinglY important aspect of coal mining research. Investigations, commenced in the mid 1960's, allow prediction of subsidence in the Southern Coalheld with reasonable confidence. The work is showing that the characteristics of thc subsidence troughs over the deeper mining at Appin differ from the characteristics of mine subsidence at less cover.The longwall mining at Appin Colliery has resulted in a maximum measured subsidenee of 730 mm. The maximum strains were small because of the large radii of curvature of the subsidence profiles. There was no damage to any of the buildings in the township of Appin.
