Changes in metal prices and mine output over recent years have required the Copper Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines to operate at annual tonnage rates varying from 4.0 million to 6.5 million tonnes. Several circuit combinations were operated during this period utilising up to two semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills and up to two ball mills. The aim was to maximise grinding efficiency and keep unit costs constant regardless of throughput rate. Measures to improve the SAG-ball mill unit operation were implemented with each circuit change. These included installation of a splitter to divert SAG Mill cyclone underflow back to the mill, increase SAG ball charge from four per cent v/v to eight per cent v/v, reduce in SAG top feed size and increase of ball mill grinding medium size. Modelling work and surveys led to a new design of the SAG liner profile from 60 rows of rail bar liners in a high-low arrangement to 40 rows of top hat liners in a high-high arrangement. An on-line SAG Mill feed sizing monitor was recently installed to improve grinding control.

The optimisation of capital in the total planning context has broadly two components: ò maximising the efficient utilisation of capital against competing capital demands; and ò maximising the efficiency with which the industry's capital requirements are sourced. This paper focuses on the latter of these two concepts, as I wish to highlight that within the coal industry the inefficient sourcing of capital has resulted in the inefficient utilisation of capital. In discussing the optimisation of capital within the coal industry I would like to outline three fundamental issues which currently impact the industry and its application of capital: Initially, from the perspective of an independent investor, the perceived risk associated with investing in a volatile industry cycle has not permitted appropriate funding structures to be created thus leading to an inefficient utilisation of capital. Secondly, investors seeking out a windfall gain have established a practice of trading in the assets rather than encouraging recapitalisation. And lastly the mismatch of supply and demand leading to the establishment of new projects which include a percentage of offshore investment has fostered an environment of lower returns and subsequently a dilution of capital.

Historical research has played a significant role in the rebirth of the Bendigo Goldfield. The historical research undertaken by the company has been directed to specific areas such as verifying the total gold production of the field, the gold production from defined blocks on each of the major anticlines, the extent of workings of each mine which exceeded 200 m depth, the size and style of reefs mined in each shaft and also within specific domains of the field. Application of this data has assisted in the determination of possible dimensions of different reef styles and the location of mineralisation within each reef system. Description of grade variation, percentage of quartz and the amount and species of accessory sulphide minerals, as well as early geotechnical observations accompanying stoping methodologies, provides valuable analogues for reef structure being defined in the current program. Historical information on shafts on the two anticlines the company is exploring has allowed the postulation and recognition of repetition of reef development within the same stratigraphy in the hinge zones of the adjacent folds. The similarities of mineralisation styles across the field within both specific lithological units and structural setting has had important implications in respect to exploration drill targeting and the estimation of grade and tonnes.

Late Cretaceous and early Tertiary coals in the Greymouth, Ohai and Kaitangata coalfields represent a major national energy resource comprising-up to 2500 x 106 tonnes of coal in ground. The three coalfields are closely related in terms of age and sedimentary and structural character. The most striking feature common to all is the complexity of the geology which has severely restricted exploration and mining of these coal resources. This complexity is manifest in the irregular lensoid nature of coal seams and by the incidence of unpredictable medium and small scale faulting and folding. There are many geological similarities between these coalfields which are considered to arise from a common origin which can be related to the plate tectonic evolution of the southwest Pacific region. In order to efficiently assess and exploit these coal resources it will be necessary to know their geology in great detail. This can he achieved by increasing the understanding of the sedimentary and structural evolution of the coal bearing basins. This knowledge may be gained by the application of traditional (ie drilling, field mapping) and innovative techniques (ie high resolution seismic, in seam seismic) with on going research-oriented studies (ie basin analysis, coal petrography).

At the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress held in 1927, the Empire Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions was formed and it was proposed that the Council take steps to prepare a "Review of the Mineral Resources and Industries of the Empire." At the third congress in 1930, it was resolved that the proposal to institute the review should be submitted to the Imperial Conference held in 1930. This was done, and the Minerals Committee, of the Imperial Economic Committee compiled, an interimreport which was based on statistics of imports and exports, and did not consider resources and consumption.In 1942 the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, wrote to the Empire Council and stated that it was desirable that the Council should be in a position to take part in decisions affecting the future of the mining and metallurgical industries. The Council communicated with the constituent Institutions regarding the nominations of two members then in England. Subsequently the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical ,Institute of India prepared a review of the mineral resources and industries of India and their post-war development, and the Empire Council forwarded a copy to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and asked if that Institute would submit a review on simjIar lines for Australia. It was Harold McMillan, Prime Minister of England 30 years ago, who used the phrase "The Wind of Change" to describe political events in Africa in his day. So well did this phrase capture the spirit of the time that it echoed around the world, and the echo has never stopped. Change is the constant factor in the society in which we live and everyone of us has had experience of the effect which it has had on our professional and personal lives. Change will not stop, it will continue at an increasing rate and the questions we must answer are how do we prepare ourselves to meet the challenge of future change and how do we take advantage of the opportunities which it will bring? It is these questions which I wish to discuss in this address.

The fluorspar deposits at Okorusu, Namibia are closely related to an alkaline igneous ring complex of late Cretaceous age (125¦7 Ma). The fluorite ores consist of relatively fine-grained purple replacement fluorite and subsequent coarser-grained purple and green vug-filling fluorite crystals. Homogenisation temperature measurements for 38 primary fluid inclusions shows that main stage purple to green fluorite crystals were deposited over a temperature range from 166¦C to 144¦C, and minor late yellow fluorite was deposited at lower temperatures from 132¦C to 128¦C. Homogenisation and freezing temperatures measured for 18 primary fluid inclusions shows that the fluorite-depositing fluids were less saline than Mississippi Valley-Type (MVT) ore fluids and overlap the lower temperature range of fluids that deposited epithermal ore deposits. Mining in three open pits (A, B and C) at Okorusu has gradually provided exposures which reveal that the fluorite orebodies have been emplaced primarily by the preferential replacement of carbonatites. Evidence for the replacement of carbonatite includes: replacement remnants of carbonatite within the fluorite ores; goethite pseudomorphs after the carbonatite minerals, pyroxene, pyrrhotite and magnetite, which are disseminated in the fluorite ores; andpartial replacement by fluorite of a large sill-like carbonatite body in the A pit. Electron microprobe analyses of minerals in unreplaced portions of the carbonatites show that their mineralogy consists of titaniferous magnetite, diopside pyroxene, apatite, biotite and calcite. Magnetite contains 6.97 per cent to 10.46 per cent TiO2, averages 8.44 per cent TiO2, and has an average V2O3 content of 0.35 per cent. At high magnifications under the scanning electron microscope (SEM), the magnetite shows abundant fine ulv÷spinel exsolution lamellae arranged in a cloth texture. Apatite contains moderately high fluorine contents that range from 3.21 to 5.0 per cent and average 4.2 per cent, and apatite crystals range in total rare earth oxides from 1.7 per cent to 2.61 per cent. Pyroxenes in the carbonatites are iron-rich diopside, and they contrast to pyroxenes in the fenites that are aegirine-augite. All of the microprobe analyses for mica crystals in the carbonatites give biotite compositions. Microscopic examination of fluorite concentrates from Okorusu provides mineralogical information important to the resolution of beneficiation problems. Fluorite ores that are related to carbonatites are typically accompanied by phosphorus benefication problems. The cause for the presence of phosphate in some of the Okorusu fluorite concentrates is a function of the presence of binary locked fluorite-apatite particles. The fluorite ores have also replaced marble locally in the A pit, especially along the A band in the B pit, and dominantly in the orebody proposed for the new C pit. Those ores are characterised by fine grain sizes, faint remnant bedding, lack of carbonatite mineral pseudomorphs and local presence of remnants of unreplaced marble. Concentrates derived from those fluorite ores are devoid of phosphorus, but commonly have elevated silica contents due the presence of free quartz. Carbonatite and marble were preferentially replaced by fluorite because the calcite was readily soluble in the presence of the fluorite-depositing fluids and the dissolution of calcite provided calcium for the formation of fluorite.

Tumbling mills are grossly inefficient, using only 5 per cent of the total energy supplied for actual breakage. A significant proportion of this inefficiency is unavoidable owing to geometric limitations; rotating drum systems are prone to exhibiting certain regions (energy barriers) that resist particle entry thereby restricting the transfer of energy. Though such systems are inherently inefficient, improved modelling schemes may lead to slightly enhanced efficiency through better microscale predictions of key breakage drivers (stress, force). Central to achieving such incremental advances is the development of a universally accepted rheology for dense granular flows. Armed with a better understanding of these macro-scale ingredients, classical process modelling offers an efficient, spreadsheet friendly framework for recovering the spatial distributions of the comminution drivers. At this real-time level of process control, it should be possible to tune comminution operations towards more energy efficient configurations – the ultimate goal of this research. The present work employs validated DEM data to recover the full continuum field which will ultimately serve as a basis for calibrating process model outputs based on different rheological hypotheses. Such a continuumbased approach captures tensor properties like the shear stress and strain rate – both of which are necessary to developing a dense granular rheology. Moreover, DEM captures this data at the momentum transfer timescale of 10-6 s – no other measurement technique is capable of this level of spatial and temporal resolution. Importantly, the confidence in this DEM data is strengthened because it has been validated at the continuum scale using Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) kinematic measurements. Validated DEM data is derived from batch experiments conducted within a 300 mm ID laboratory drum using three and five millimetre glass beads at 60 and 75 percent critical speed; such mill speeds are typically encountered in the tumbling mill industry. Dimensional analysis is conducted using critical rheological parameters (shear rate, shear stress, granular temperature etc), which are key to not only developing a granular rheology but ultimately will be used to tune our mechanistic models.

KCGMÆs Fimiston Open Pit, located in the centre of the historic Golden Mile, is situated above some 3000 kilometres of old underground workings. These workings, both level and vertical, present significant safety and operational problems in the pit. One of these challenges is in safely drilling void areas so that they can be charged and blasted effectively. Current drilling practices in these areas require machines that can only drill 115 mm holes on a smaller pattern than the standard blast pattern. This results in more time and cost to both drill and charge these areas. Any other method currently available to drill out these areas involves putting operators in a potentially hazardous situation by being too close to the void area being drilled. Not effectively drilling and blasting these areas leads to hazardous situations further in the mining cycle including oversize, large toe and uncollapsed voids. Ineffective blasting also causes reductions in mining productivity and mine to mill performance. In response to these issues, KCGM has commissioned the implementation of a fully remote controlled DM45 blast hole drill rig to drill out selected void areas. The remote system, installed in conjunction with Ausdrill Ltd and GM Mining Electrics, is designed to operate similarly to a tele-remote bogging system with the operator controlling the drill rig from a separate control cabin via radio signals and video feed. This allows KCGM to drill in areas of higher risk without exposing the operators to voids. The drill rig will also be able to drill standard patterns through some specially selected void areas, reducing costs and extra time associated with drilling and charging void affected areas. The remote rig is expected to provide a number of benefits, both in the drilling process and in further downstream operations. Costs of drilling in void areas are expected to decrease with standard patterns instead of smaller patterns being drilled. Safety and operator comfort are also expected to increase through removing the operator from the pit floor. Blasting is also expected to see significant improvements through increased ease of charging void areas (because of larger holes and standard patterns), more consistent patterns resulting in less secondary blasting and toe and an overall improvement in the speed and cost of charge-up practices. This more consistent blasting will also improve shovel productivity, crusher performance and overall mine-to-mill efficiency. This paper presents an overview of the development of the remote controlled system, including modifications that have occurred since commissioning. It explains some of the problems encountered and how these have been solved. Key issues for operational success will be identified and explained with a view to making future implementations easier. Factors used to assess the performance of the remote controlled rig will also be explained in further detail and used in a preliminary assessment of the rigÆs feasibility.

Whole rock geodhemical analyses from samples of Potosi gneiss within the Willyama Supergroup have been utilised to identify geochemical trends towards Pb/Zn ore positions. Although the analyses come from disparate sources they have been incorporated in the data base only if locational, sampling, analytical, lithological and stratigraphic descriptors were reliable. These data have been statistically analysed using programmes of the GASP software package. A discriminant function has been derived which permits Potosi gneiss associated with the Pb/Zn lode horizons in the Broken Hill domain to be distinguished from Potosi gneiss in a similar stratigraphic position in the Maybell Domain. In the "near ore" position the Potosi gneiss has significantly lower mean Na2O and significantly higher mean MnO. Also mean Rb, CaO and K20 are higher and mean Sr lower. This discriminant function serves to identify areas prospective for Pb/Zn mineralisation. A second discriminant function based on MnO, Si02 and K20/Na20 gives a semi- quantitative indication of proximity to ore.

Ideal iron ore sinter is produced by optimising the balance between coarse (+2 mm), stable ore nuclei and a reactive matrix consisting largely of fluxed -1 mm fines. The authors have previously published work evaluating the matrix melting behaviour of a number of fine ores, using techniques developed by CSIRO. The focus of that work was to demonstrate the contribution of the matrix to overall sinter quality, with the results showing a direct correlation between melting point, matrix porosity and strength. CSIRO has also developed a complementary test to study the behaviour of coarse ore nucleus particles in contact with the sinter matrix and provide an evaluation of their reaction and assimilation properties. This test provides valuable fundamental information that can be used to better understand the role of specific ore types and optimise blend composition.The CSIRO laboratory-scale assimilation test is carried out by embedding particles of ores of specific sizes into a fluxed matrix of known sinter blend composition, using real ores and fluxes, in a laboratory test that directly relates to pot-grate and plant sintering conditions. Samples are fired under controlled conditions in a tube furnace using a standard heating profile and a constant, low-oxygen potential atmosphere. These conditions simulate the actual sintering process while removing the effects of the many locally-variable parameters (eg temperature, oxidation potential and localised chemistry) that exist in the actual process, meaning that trends in behaviour can be more clearly seen. Designed as a compromise between the industry-standard pot-grate sintering test and a more fundamental test using chemical reagents, the aim is to isolate and evaluate the nucleus behaviour of an individual blend component to allow an improved understanding of the role that an individual ore plays in a specific blend. Measured cross-sections of the resulting fired samples provide a semi-quantitative measure of reactivity, while accompanying photomicrographs allow a qualitative assessment of assimilation properties (eg volume and distribution of secondary porosity generated during reaction).In this paper, to complement the previous work published on melting behaviour, nucleus particles were selected from hematite, hematite-goethite and goethite ores and embedded in a simulated plant sinter matrix. Drilled core particles of two sizes were tested at fixed temperatures simulating low- (<1300°C) and high-temperature (>1300°C) sintering conditions. The resulting assimilation properties are compared and discussed as a function of particle size, temperature and ore/sinter mineralogy. Companies involved in the mining industry are exposed to risks, referred to as corporate risks, as part of the business process. Directors and management should be aware of these risks and make appropriate business decisions to address each risk. If business risks are not addressed on a timely basis the consequences are likely to be serious and will adversely impact the ultimate success of the business.The key corporate risks are:Poor cash flow and treasury management. ò Incompetent or unmotivated staff.ò Poor product quality.ò Accounting systems that do not provide meaningful and timely information.ò Computer system deficiencies. ò Ineffective credit screening.ò Assets not adequately protected.ò New ventures undertaken that are either inappropriate or not adequately researched.Exposures to corporate risk should be dealt with by Directors and management by systematically identifying major risk areas and implementing appropriate internal and management controls to deal with such risk areas. Proper management controls and procedures include the setting of overall corporate objectives and policy, monitoring adherence to such policy, establishing early warning systems to highlight problem areas and maintaining security over assets.

Improvements in electron optics, field emission gun design, and X-ray detector technology have led to the development of a new class of microanalysis tools. By combining multiple wavelength dispersive (WD) spectrometers, spectral energy dispersive (ED) spectrometers and cathodoluminescence (CL) data sets, a wealth of information can be collected during routine electron beam mapping and analysis. In this paper, data collection on a field emission electron microprobe equipped with five wavelength dispersive, two silicon drift energy dispersive X-ray spectrometers and a wavelength dispersive linear array optical spectrometer has been automated with the optical, electron and X-ray signals being collected in parallel. To analyse the large hyperspectral data sets we have implemented an autoclustering strategy that can be used to produce a quantitative chemical phase map. The cathodoluminescence spectra can be deconvoluted to produce peak intensity maps, which are then converted into elemental speciation images with quantitative sensitivity down to parts per million levels. Both methods are illustrated using typical mineral processing examples, firstly a Ni-laterite sample is investigated with the fine-scale distribution of Ni examined in detail. Secondly, a scheelite sample with rare earth zoning in mapped and rare earth levels quantified.

Traditional mechanised resin rock bolting in hard rock underground mines requires the installation of resin capsules into a pre-drilled hole prior to the rock bolt being spun into a hole to mix the resin and set the bolt in place. In poor rockmass conditions, especially at depth or in highly altered faults and shears, the condition of the holes often deteriorates as the poor ground around it unravels and falls into the hole. This results in partially or fully blocked holes that either damages the resin capsule when they are being inserted into the holes or prevent it entirely until the hole is continuously cleaned of debris. This deterioration of the hole condition, and continuous need to clean and re-drill holes, also increases the diameter of the hole which in turn affects the continuously mechanically coupled anchorage mechanism of the rock bolt to the rockmass as there is simply not enough resin in the hole to fill the annulus between the bolt and the rock. This results in a large increase to critical heading cycle time and, more importantly, results in the rock reinforcement not performing as per design specification and increases the risk of instability. To overcome the quality control issues with resin bolt installation in poor ground, a single pass drill, install, inject and tension self-drilling resin bolt application was designed and implemented for use in such conditions. This system allows the operator to inject a two part polyester resin through a self-drilled hollow bolt to mix and fully encapsulate the rock reinforcement. The self-drilling bolt allows for post injection of the hole after the bolt has been installed into the rock and gives the operator manual or automated control on the amount of resin used in the hole to ensure complete encapsulation and continuously mechanically coupled anchorage to the rock. This allows the reinforcement to work as designed and provide the Geotechnical Engineer extra quality control confidence in these conditions. The implementation of this single pass resin bolting system resulted in significant decreases to the resin bolting cycle time and rock bolt quality control failures. In this paper the design, implementation and embedment into the development cycle will be discussed and the in situ quality control checks used to validate the increase in rock bolt installation quality will be shared. The history of potential large scale development at Stawell in northwestern Victoria dates back to 1914, when Great Boulder Mines Limited, of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, took up options on some of the major mines in the Stawell Goldfield. Despite this and other attempts by various groups over the next thirty years, mining activity on the field gradually dwindled to the retreatment of old mill tailings.A static price for gold and indifferent drilling results prevented a major effort towards reopening the field until the late 1970's. A renewed exploration effort led to the discovery of sufficient reserves to justify installation of a carbon-in-leach gold treatment plant.

The Tolukuma Gold Deposit is hosted by metamorphic and volcanic rocks, and igneous intrusions. Dilatant structures for the main veining appear to be provided by post-metamorphic flexure/faulting; syn-mineralisation tectonics is recognised from the en-echelon patterns of much of the veining. A SSE trending structure containing high grade mineralisation has acted as a major dilational zone within or at the contacts of porphyry intrusions. An ESE trend has controlled numerous dilational structures splaying eastward from the SSE vein structure and containing medium grade mineralisation.Early hydrothermal activity (Stage I) is represented by unmineralised, pyrite-rich brecciation and fracturing. Commercial explosives range from pure emulsions to pure ANFO, with blends of these providing interesting alternatives: energy is often adjusted through addition of aluminium, or the control of density. The energy rating of explosives is derived chiefly from detonation codes, which are used to derive expressions for the internal energy change of the detonation products as they do work under expansion. While all codes used for this purpose work on the basis of Ideal detonation, it is common knowledge that commercial explosives operate in the Non-Ideal domain, which affects the mode of energy delivery to the environment. However, since Ideality represents the foundation from which actual performance evolves, it is valuable to examine the intrinsic energy release of a formulation before attempting to understand the influence of Non-Ideality. In examining the Ideal pressure profile of fundamental formulations, remarkable correlation has been found with field performance, and this increases understanding of the influence of various formulation modifications, especially in regard to the stage at which energy is released, and the effect on rockbreaking. This work has emphasised the value of attempting to understand and define better the non-ideal detonation process.

Prior to the merger of BHP and Billiton, both companies had a keenfocus on improving their performance in health, safety, environment and community (HSEC) matters. This shared intent, albeit executed insomewhat different ways, provided an excellent foundation for the newCompany. During the integration planning phase, a team was formed toconsider the organisational design for consistently achieving world class HSEC performance. The design included the policy platform, resources, structures, standards and procedures to be implemented in the merged entity. A key aspect of the design was the fully integrated HSECManagement Standards. These Standards create the framework for theconsistent application of BHP BillitonÆs HSEC Policy at all of ourmanaged operations across the world. The Standards have their origin in similar frameworks adopted by BHP during the 1990s, as well as thewell-known quality related standards (eg ISO 14001). However, they areunique in that they combine all aspects of HSEC management into asingle integrated set of auditable standards. By combining these areas and integrating our HSEC Management Standards with other aspects of the æBHP Billiton WayÆ, we are establishing a holistic, line management driven improvement approach. Over time, the BHP Billiton Way will embed a systematic improvement philosophy that we expect will become a key source of competitive advantage. The HSEC Management Standards are consistent with ISO 14001,OHSAS 18001, the Australian Minerals Industry Code for EnvironmentalManagement and generally aligned with SA8000. While compliance withthese external standards ensures that a systematic approach andimprovement plans are in place, BHP BillitonÆs HSEC Standards gofurther to include minimum performance requirements that reflect theintent of our HSEC Policy. Therefore, implementation at site levelensures that robust systems are in place to implement our Policy and that accreditation can be achieved to external standards if required.To assess implementation of the HSEC Management Standards anaudit system has been designed which incorporates both self-assessmentand peer review. Each site is required to undertake an annualself-assessment of compliance with the Standards using a commonassessment protocol. Every three years a peer review is conducted at each site to confirm the results of self-assessment and to provide a means of sharing knowledge throughout the Company. The review teams are composed of line managers and HSEC professionals from around theCompany, representatives of our joint venture partners and independentspecialists as required. The Company has committed to public reportingof the audit results through our annual HSEC report and this is reflected in our published targets. From a wider perspective, as we in the resources industry strive tocollectively raise our HSEC performance and reputation, there may be arole for industry based HSEC Management Standards complemented bya level of independent review.

Due to ongoing demand and increasing depletion of high-grade iron ore resources from large deposits, Australian iron ore producers are developing smaller size deposits to maintain current export levels. The iron grade, mineralogy, chemical and physical characteristics of iron ore fines being mined from different deposits vary considerably. It is therefore imperative to develop long-term strategies to maintain the quality and consistency of iron ore fines while moving to a larger diversity of smaller deposits. Blending is a common practice in sinter plants as it is almost impossible to produce a high performance sinter mixture displaying the required characteristics from one single ore. Blending is also one of the most effective options being used by iron ore producers to ensure the long-term stability of their products while increasing production. When designing a blend, the blend components are selected to support each other to achieve the required overall balanced metallurgical performance of the final product at a relatively low cost. To do so, a fundamental understanding of the key characteristics of iron ore fines and their potential impacts on the iron ore sintering process and sinter quality are required. In this paper, the sintering process and sinter structure have been analysed and the key factors affecting the sintering performance of iron ore fines, including productivity and quality, identified. Under fixed sintering conditions, the granulation efficiency, nuclei stability and the volume and properties of the primary sinter melt are believed to have important impacts on both sintering productivity and sinter quality. Discussion is then focused on the effects of ore chemical, physical and mineralogical characteristics on the key factors identified and in turn the consequences for sintering productivity and sinter quality.

A mining operation can be identified as demonstrating prudent management when a number of vital characteristics are evident.All risks and opportunities that are critical to the on-going success of the operation have been identified and are being effectively managed. All significant tasks and events are plan driven. All levels of management visibly support the policies of the operation through their attitude, behaviour and actions as well as words. Supporting evidence for required activity and the outcomes is readily available. Improvement mechanisms are working to advance the key business processes. Everyone is working towards satisfying the needs of the stakeholders of the operation. When these characteristics are integrated with the satisfaction of all legislative requirements, all industry codes and optionally all relevant international management system standards then an operation is fulfilling all the requirements of a Due Diligence Process. The majority of mining operations do not show all of these characteristics and therefore unnecessarily suffer from missed profit opportunity and constant cost pressure, less than acceptable safety and health and environmental performance and consequent poor relations with employees, unions and regulators. In these operations the characteristics to be observed are quite different.Serious incidents are occurring with no sign of a rate decrease. The operation lurches from one panic ituation to another. Management are absent in their leadership, but very active in developing rules and enforcement methodologies. The operation has no history. Re-inventing the wheel with employees who come and go at an alarming rate seems to be forever occurring. All efforts are directed at controlling the business outputs with a strong emphasis on blame. Everyone is trying to look busy to avoid the ever-present cost reduction threats. To change to more prudent management utilising a Due Diligence Process is not theoretically difficult. However it does take clear direction, focussed efforts, supporting actions with appropriate tools and perhaps most importantly an internal desire and drive to become such an operation. A Due Diligence Process is about doing the important things that have to be done, providing the understanding of why they are important, demonstrating proof of activity and effectiveness, and leading the way through effective management.
