The Nelson province was chosen as the prime area for rhenium sampling, based on its mineral associations. Sample preparation involved benefication by grinding and flotation. A modification of published procedures for rhenium analysis was developed and the results compared with those obtained for molybdenum on the same samples using atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results of the analysis for both metals is discussed and the relationships between rhenium and the molybdenum mineralisation of this region is commented on. A metallogenic province is defined for molybdenum and rhenium and the tectonic setting for this is discussed. Some consideration has been given to rhenium possibilities in Fiordland and the Coromandel Range.

The Middleback Ranges are a series of parallel northsouth ridges on the eastern side of the Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, about 20 miles inland from the Spencer Gulf, as shown in Fig. 1. They extend for some 20 miles across the centre of the County of York. North of them, on the same line of strike, in, the County of Manchester, is a disconnected series of lesser which ends in the Iron Monarch-Iron Knob ridge, the principal iron ore locality. These ridges are referred to in the following pages as an integral part of the Middleback Ranges.The deposits of hematite which outcrop in these ranges (Fig. 1) form the most important group of iron ore bodies in Australia, and are exploited by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company. The largest of them is the Iron Monarch (Fig. 6) .H: The next largest are the Iron Duke, the Iron Prince and Iron Baron. The Iron Knob, Iron Duchess, the North and South Iron Knights, Iron Queen, and the small body south of it, the Kimba Lease, and the deposits in the Cook's and Ash Leases, are all smaller.Numerous small lens-like bodies of hematite occur throughout the ridges, but are not of sufficient size to be of commercial use. At present only the Iron Monarch and the Iron Prince bodies are being worked. The ERA - Ranger Mine ore processing operation consists of a sulphuric acid leach followed by counter current decantation and solvent extraction circuits. The most expensive unit processing operation at Ranger is the sulphuric acid leach. In 1992 and 1993 changes were made to the operation of the leach circuit. These changes have reduced power and reagent consumption in leach by 30 per cent and 20 per cent respectively with minimal effect on extraction efficiency. The first change was to operate the leach circuits at higher pHs than previously attempted. In addition a cap was placed on the amount of acid added to the leach circuit. Secondly, an on-line pH measurement system was installed and has reduced the variation with time of the leach circuit pHs. Finally, the number of leach vessels used was reduced from ten to seven. This action was undertaken after an examination of the uranium profile and the residence time in the leach circuit from previous years. This paper examines the above changes and assesses their effectiveness on plant performance and costs.

This paper presents the numerical simulation of mine backfilling in underground stopes using three-dimensional discrete element modelling (DEM). The simulation predicts the forces exerted at the stope base and barricade with respect to time under free drained conditions. The results of the numerical simulation are validated using basic analytical solutions and advanced experimental tests involving a geotechnical centrifuge system. Overall, a good agreement between the present numerical simulations and the existing experimental and analytical results was found. The present model suggests that DEM is a promising computational tool to predict barricade pressure in underground mine stopes.CITATION:Hasan, A and Karrech, A, 2014. This presentation discusses NASA-funded research on the ability of hyperspectral remote sensing to map diagnostic acid rock drainage (ARD) mineralogy that adversely affects water quality within watershed and to determine the relative contributions of natural ARD sources of metals and acidity to that drainage. Ground-based reflectance spectroscopy, combined with water chemistry, is used to identify mineralogical and chemical variations throughout a watershed. Integrated with hyperspectral data acquired from airborne remote sensing platforms, such as the NASA Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) sensor, a methodology has been developed that should improve environmental assessments and tracking of impacts on and from drainages. Phase I of this project focuses on a drainage basin (Lake Creek), tributary to the upper Arkansas River in central Colorado, which is impacted by natural acid rock drainage from areas of high-sulfide hydrothermal alteration. This project builds upon research and inventory efforts by the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) to identify hydrothermal alteration that is the primary source or is contributing to acidic and toxic drainage in Colorado. This presentation will cover ground and airborne hyperspectral remote sensing techniques and results and water analyses for seasonal high-flow and low-flow conditions in Lake Creek. Identifying correlations between mineralogy, especially mineralogy that can be identified through airborne remote sensing, and water chemistry is a key focus of this project. Of particular interest are low-pH iron phases such as jarosite, ferrihydrite, schwertmannite, copiapite, and transitional amorphous phases as well as AlOH phases from higher, although still acidic, pH environments which are observed to mix with the iron precipitates within the streams draining from the hydrothermal systems. Drainage in the Lake Creek watershed derives from the Grizzly Peak caldera (Oligocene), which exhibits extensive hydrothermal alteration. Alteration types include silicic, quartz-sericite, quartz-sericite-pyrite, advanced argillic, and argillic. By understanding the chemistry of a naturally impacted drainage and its relationship to the surrounding geology, the project goal is to allow more efficient and complete identification of such sources in mineralised terranes through remote sensing technology.

THE absence of any locality maps of the district of Morobe has been seriously felt by mining engineers engaged on the goldfields, and as it was evident at the beginning of operations that the administration would be unable to make good this deficiency, ascheme for making rapid traverses was worked out, and in all subsequent travelling the necessary records were kept for the construction of a reliable reconnaissance map of the Bulolo goldfield and its approaches (see Plate 1.). Since all the field work had tobe carried out without encroaching on primary duties, the compilation of sufficient data was a somewhat lengthy business. It was found that in this r;ough country a pedometer was useless, as it was impossible to calibrate it for the variation in length ofpace between climbing semi-precipices and walking over level country. Further, the native tracks "meander" so excessively that the only method of calculating air-line distance is by timing, and a knowledge of what the timing represents, and until a 10kg experience had been gained in the time taken to cover known distances in various types of-country, one could not feel competent to estimate sufficiently accurately. It was found that reliability could be attained only when walking at nearly top pace. Inregard to aeroplane traverses, results were reliable only when the air was fairly still.BEARINGSIn arriving at the bearing between main traverse points, the method used was to keep a "boy" about two chains- behind when marching and sight back on him, standing, at about two-chain intervals. Since the mid-1970s there has been increasing attention in the South Pacific area to the problems of disaster planning and management at various levels, mainly from regional through national to provincial levels. This concern has been expressed in a variety of ways. International aid donors have made their views known in commentaries or reports. Seminar discussions have been organised at the regional level (such as at Suva, 1976; Suva, 1979; Tonga, 1982 and Suva, 1983). In-country training workshops or meetings have been organised (such as the "Disaster Preparedness Workshops for Non-governmental Organisations" in Pacific countries, jointly run by the Australian Red Cross and the Australian Overseas Disaster Response Organisation and supported by AIDAB, in Vanuatu, 1985; Solomon Islands, 1985; Western Samoa, 1986; Fiji, 1987; Tonga, 1987; Lae and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, 1988) or held outside the area (ACDC at Macedon, 1981). Training and/or research institutions have been established such as the East-West Center, Honolulu, and the Asian Disaster Preparedness Center, Bangkok (more Asia oriented). As part of the East-West Center Pacific Islands Development Program's Disaster Preparedness Project, a detailed manual of disaster preparedness and response procedures and guidelines has been published (Carter, 1984).Table 1 and figure 1 show that the area with which this discussion deals is a highly fragmented island region, comprising many small, some minute, nations, both in land area and population. The social structure is predominantly rural, with the capital city often making up a small part of the total population and, in absolute terms, little more than a small town. Outside the administrative and governmental activities concentrated in the capitals, in most cases the indigenous inhabitants depend on subsistence agriculture or on usually a monocultural concentration on a cash crop, most frequently coconuts.

The seismic velocities of intact rock are dependent on the applied stress. Unfortunately, the low susceptibility of seismic velocity to stress changes mean that changes in seismic velocity have to be measured extremely accurately to infer stress changes from them. Previously, it was thought that measurements of this accuracy could only be made with active sources or repeating earthquakes. In this paper, we show that the noise generated by mining activity can be used to construct virtual seismic signals with which we can measure changes in seismic velocity accurately enough to see the short- and long-term effects of a production blast on the surrounding medium. The time-dependent velocity variations achieved with this method show that the blast caused weakening of the rock mass for the rock within a radius of 200 m of the blast. The weakening is healed by confining stresses over a period of five days, after which permanent changes in the seismic velocity can be seen. The size and spatial distribution of the seismic velocity changes were compared to modelled changes in static volumetric stress, which supported the notion that seismic velocity changes can be used to measure the redistribution of stress after a blast. The results of this study indicate that this method can be a powerful tool to evaluate the evolution of stress in a mine at a relatively low cost as the data that it uses would normally be discarded.CITATION:Olivier, G, Lynch, R A and Brenguier, F, 2016. The Closure Risk model was developed as a new tool to aid decision makers in the complex area of mine closure. It uses a simple analytical technique that allows the decision maker to simplify what is often a complex mine closure process into more easily managed sub components. This systematic approach ensures that critical factors in the closure process are not overlooked. It also allows the most important issues to be highlighted. The model can also be used to produce quantitative estimates of risk by weighting and prioritising the issues to produce the Closure Risk Factor (CRF). Field trials at several mine sites in the Northern Territory of Australia in 2001 tested the model. The trials confirmed that the model has significant potential as a tool for decision-makers to assess in a structured, systematic manner, the major closure risks at individual mine sites. The risks include not only environmental impacts but safety and health, community, legal, financial, technical and other issues. The trials confirmed the value of a team-based approach and the inputs of key staff including environmental, production, mine planning, and community liaison personnel as well as mine management. Although the usefulness of the qualitative component of the model was established, it was found that, due to the influence of subjectivity, the utility of the prototype model to determine quantitative risk was of limited value. Using a continuous improvement approach, improvements to the model were sought. A refined model, incorporating the Australian Standard 4360 definition of risk and facilitated in-house risk assessment sessions was developed and tested against the data obtained in the field trial. This model, while maintaining the qualitative strengths of the original, allows more accurate absolute and relative quantitative scores to be calculated. This in turn facilitates comparisons between the issues at a single site as well as between different mines.

In secondary steelmaking, calcium treatment is practised to modify the solid alumina or spinel inclusions into liquid or partially liquid calcium aluminates. It has been seen that the dissolved calcium reacts with sulfur or oxygen present in the steel to form CaS or CaO type of transient inclusions. Post-calcium treatment these transient inclusions further react with pre-existing alumina or spinel inclusions and modify them. In addition, direct modification of pre-existing inclusions is also reported in the literature. In the present study, laboratory-scale induction furnace-based experiments are carried out to melt electrolytic iron in an alumina crucible followed by deoxidation with aluminium. The CaS-based composite material, prepared in-house, is added after the aluminium deoxidation to study the stability of CaS at the steelmaking temperature. Multiple steel samples were also taken to track the dissociation of CaS by means of sulfur pick-up in steel. Additionally, inclusion analysis of these steel samples was also performed to track changes in the chemical composition of inclusions in response to CaS addition. It has been seen that the CaS dissociates leading to a gradual pick-up of sulfur in steel. The scanning electron microscope – energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis reveals that the alumina crucible and floated alumina inclusions are modified into calcium aluminates and the extent of modification depends on the contact time of CaS with the two sources of alumina mentioned earlier. However, the modification of alumina inclusions in the bulk steel did not occur during these experiments.

In this paper, a method for extracting and refining metallic molybdenum using low-temperature ZnCl2- NaCl-KCl molten salt was proposed. The electrochemical behaviour of molybdenum ions in ZnCl2- NaCl-KCl molten salt was investigated in detail, and pure metallic molybdenum was collected on the cathode. The reduction and diffusion processes of Mo(V) ions in ZnCl2-NaCl-KCl molten salt were determined through a series of electrochemical methods. The diffusion coefficients and nucleation modes of Mo(V) ions were also studied, and electrolysis was conducted for a prolonged period at a constant current density. The results indicated that the electrode reduction of Mo(V) ions in ZnCl2- NaCl-KCl molten salt proceeds through a three-step reaction: Mo(V) → Mo(IV) → Mo(III) → Mo at 250°C. The Mo(V) → Mo(IV) reaction was reversible and diffusion-controlled, with a Mo(V) diffusion coefficient of 6.02 × 10-6 cm2 s-1. Additionally, the nucleation mode of Mo(V) ions was instantaneous nucleation. The products electro-deposited were confirmed of metallic molybdenum with a particle size of less than 1 μm.

Full aerodynamic design development of the proposed fans for the enlarged primary ventilation system at Mount Isa Mines Limited was initiated before tender specifications were prepared. Theoretical and analytical design studies were made of many possibilities to determine the optimum proposal. Major considerations were efficiency, simplicity, standardization, and mechanical feasibility. Model testing and experimental work covered blading design, inlet shape, diffuser and tail fairing dimensions, instrumentation requirements, ancl noise studies.Theoretical and predicted performance estimates were prepared for the three 20 ft diameter vertically mounted axial flow fans.

The adsorption mechanisms of various thiol collectors can be subdivided into four classes: chemisorption, EC-mechanism, catalytic oxidation and metathetical substitution. The chemisorption mechanism occurs at potentials below the thermodynamic potentials for the metal-thiol compound formation and is reversible. The EC-mechanism occurs when the mineral is sufficiently oxidised to liberate metal ions to form metal-xanthates; therefore, it is observed with more easily oxidisable minerals and/or with collectors having large pK values. Thionocarbamates adsorb on sulphide minerals via the EC-mechanism due to their large pK values. Although the adsorption occurs at very low potentials as compared to xanthates, it is irreversible with large overpotentials. On the other hand, the adsorption of modified thiophosphates and thiophosphinates occurs near the thermodynamic potentials because of the low pK values. The metathetical substitution is believed to occur only when a mineral is highly oxidised. These classifications are useful for studying the effects of electrochemical potentials and the molecular structure on the collector adsorption Mechanisms.

Over the past ten years, the mining industry has witnessed the introduction of a new and innovative mine filling technique known as paste fill, which consists of placing full stream tailings with small amounts of binder and water into underground stopes. Paste fill has benefits over traditional backfill methods, such as higher solids contents than hydraulic fill and easier transportation than rock fill. From a geotechnical perspective, the behaviour of very fine material in a fully saturated state can be complex, particularly when binder is added. Previously, there has been no rigorous solution to understanding the paste fill deposition process, resulting in uncertainty regarding critical aspects such as barricade load calculations. This uncertainty has the obvious consequences of potential barricade failures (including at least 12 over the past four years), and for many operations attempts to deal with this uncertainty has led to excessively conservative filling schedules, restricting production. This paper presents an application of Minefill-2D, the first rigorous model capable of representing the paste fill deposition process. The model couples the processes of material accretion, consolidation and cement hydration to calculate the distribution of stress around a stope (including the total stress applied to barricade structures) during filling. Minefill-2D is a finite element numerical program, which has been verified using laboratory element tests, centrifuge tests and in situ measurements (Helinski, 2008). The authors present a sensitivity analysis, carried out using the model, to demonstrate some of the critical and less critical aspects relating to paste backfill deposition. The results of this sensitivity analysis are used to devise a fill management strategy that can be utilised to minimise the risk of barricade failures and maximise fill rates where appropriate.

The initial sloping blocks at the [nine are located in the upper part of the Footwall Lead lode, and the Hangingwall Lead and Glenholme Breccia lodes. This paper discusses the geological investigations, interpretation and modelling that was undertaken for the Footwall Lead lode production block at Cannington Mine, as well as providing a basic geological introduction to the Cannington deposit.

The basic separation phenomena taking place in film concentration processes are studied through a kinetic-probabilistic approach. This approach is based on the fact that the particle velocity in the film separation phenomena is a random variable and may be defined by frequency distributions and probability laws. The approach requires: 1. development of probabilistic models for describing the behaviour of particles having different specific gravity and size along selected trajectories in the separating devices; 2. setting up an experimental procedure for determining the relevant frequency distribution curves at the exit of the separators for the particles mentioned above; 3. estimation of model parameters and model validation. In the paper, the model equations are given for the mass distribution of particles on the surface of separators, the mass distribution at the exits of shaking tables and the residence time distribution in channel type devices. The relation between residence time distribution and particle velocity distribution is derived. The test procedure has been defined and results are reported for the exit or residence time distribution in channels. A comparison between experimental and calculated frequency distributions is reported.

The Copper Canyon deposits, occur in proximity to the regionally distinctive formational boundary between the Staveley Formation and Marimo Shale. The mineralisation here is associated with breccias, veins, and alteration zones near the base of the Marimo Shale unit and in the underlying evaporitic dolomite-dololutite dominant Staveley Formation. The Marimo Shale unit, in its basal 60 metres, is highly carbonaceous and hosts ubiquitous but minor diagenetic (?) copper-pyrite, and on occasion, extensive albite-microcline alteration centres, pyritic (cobaltiferous)-quartz veins, and microcline-quartz_+plagioclase veins or veinlet arrays. The most significant mineralisation, such as at the Greenrnount prospect, consists of a shallowly dipping package of alteration zones overprinted by multiple generations of pink-orange microcline-quartz-chalcopyrite-pyrite-(arsenopyrite) and albite-calcite- phlogopite veins. Accessory mineralogies in most of these mineralisation styles consist of tourmaline, monazite, rutile, and apatite. Chalcopyrite (and secondary chalcocite) and gold are associated with each generation of alteration but are best developed in the later stages of veining. In the underlying Staveley Formation, which is a conformable transition between the Corella Formation limestones and the Marimo Shale, chalcopyrite (cobaltiferous)-pyrite mineralisation occurs as disseminations in pre- and syntectonic breccias, and with disaggregated silica pseudomorphs (after thinly bedded evaporitic sulphate beds) and associated dolomitised limestone-calcilutite. Although this mineralisation may be partly diagenetic in origin the 200 in thick evaporitic packages are also host to a locally widespread (2 to 4 km long and 200 to >500 metres wide) and pervasive 'redrock' styled microcline-dolomite¦hematite alteration. Within this gross alteration package there also seems to be a consistent association with narrow (10 to 100 metres wide), linear (stratabound) semi-massive magnetite-hematite-microcline and quartz-chalcedony replacement zones. Like much of the nearby Corella Formation the Staveley Formation, under the Marimo Shale, has undergone dissolution, paleo-solution karsting (breccias) and tectonic brecciation such that the precursor lithological details have been progressively obliterated. The post-diagenetic to post-tectonic fluid pathway development and metasomatic alteration history of this important lithostructural package of rocks has been traced from preliminary studies only. The ability to do so is largely due to the absence of significant regional and contact metamorphic overprinting, and the local preservation of precursor sediment profiles. It is proposed that both the base of the Marimo Shale and parts of the underlying evaporitic-limestone-dololutite have acted as conformable fluid pathways for hydrothermal and (perhaps) diagenetically derived, Cu-Au-(¦Co ¦As) K-Na-Ti-REE bearing, fluids and brines.

An experienced drill operator is able to make a log of a drill hole defining physical properties of the earth such as hardness or structure as they vary with depth. This log is based on intuition or how the drill æfeelsÆ. Rock characterisation using measure while drilling (MWD) parameters aims at refining this intuition into a package that accurately defines the properties of the subsurface as the drill bit propagates. Subsurface investigation using MWD parameters aims to combine physical drill parameters: Pull down force, rotary speed, penetration rate, torque and vibration in such a way to yield real time rock properties. MWD is investigation in its most primitive form, put simply MWD is merely a physical probe æfeelingÆ what the rock mass is at depth.

Fatalities that occurred because of rock falls in off-reef excavations (excluding shafts) over the last three years range between ten per cent and 20 per cent of the total number of fatalities that have occurred due to rock falls in the South African mining industry. These rock falls, mostly exacerbated by blasting practices, occur because of failure on discontinuities within the rock mass. Among other reasons of their occurrence is insufficient support installation or the incorrect assessment of rock mass conditions. This report presents qualitative analysis intended to outline rock stability conditions in tunnels subjected to dynamic loading. Seismic waves including those created by firing an explosive charge in tunnel rocks are considered. The rock behaviour is monitored using geophones and extensometers variably installed to record the near and far effects of roof bolt support units on a dynamically loaded rock. The paper discusses the results of field investigations.

Since the introduction of Lithium-Ion Batteries (LIBs) in 1991, the market for lithium-ion cells has been driven by the high demand for portable electronic devices and more recently for batteries for the electric car industry. It is expected to grow rapidly to reach 2600 GWh globally by 2030 (US Government, Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, 2021). However, there is a desperate need to recycle LIBs to recover valuable cathode materials and graphite. For this reason, several physical and chemical recycling technologies have been proposed to recover these materials from spent batteries. Amongst these, froth flotation technology is a potential cost-effective technology for separation of the graphite fraction from the lithium oxide components due to the natural hydrophobicity of graphite and density difference between graphite and cathode materials (Folayan et al, 2021).
