The Porgera gold project is now in its seventh year of operation as one of the world's prime gold mining projects in one of the most underdeveloped and remote regions of the world. The unique gold deposit was development in stages to its present size of operation with an underground mine of 2000tpd, an open pit operation moving 210,000tpd and a complex metallurgical plant treating an average of 16,500tpd of ore. During the past years the operation had to address an array of issues relating to the "development" of the region and this is still ongoing. Development means different things to different people and though the parties that signed the different agreements relating to the Mining Development Contract were aware of this, none has real- ised the extent to which this is true. The developing company (a joint venture between Placer Pacific as the Manager, Goldfields Porgera, Highlands Gold and the Government of PNG), provided funds for risky exploration and the capital for development of the project. Its shareholders ex- pect an economic and viable mine operation from the deposit to ensure them returns on their investment. The local people gave up their land, their isolated way of living and accepted to be out of their comfort zone for some time in anticipation of a better lifestyle and economic benefits in support of that lifestyle. The PNG Government has a leg in both camps and expects both outcomes at the same time. The Government is also the regulator and expects compliance on top of that. If development in general is to be successful, all parties must substantially satisfy all expectations. It is evident that the outcome of some elements of development are reasonably defined (i.e. develop a viable mine to exploit the deposit), whilst other elements are moving targets (i.e. a better lifestyle). The seeds for conflict are thus abundantly present and to resolve them requires the will of all parties in all areas to come to a solution. This path to problem solving is many times torturous as each party comes from a different culture and background and has a different understanding of the parameters in the equation.

The behavior of a curved wall under earth pressures for a horseshoe shaped tunnel lining is considered to be closely related to the beha vior of a vertical beam with variable flexural sti-"ness on an elastic foundation. In stress analysis an approximate method which divides the axis of the tunnel lining into small finite lengths and replaces the integrals by summation is usually adopted. this method is extremely complicated and tedious. However the variations of the moment of inertia from point to point along the wall axis can be expressed by a power function inversely .eith the distance from the ll )ottom and the analytical method can still used. The equations for the calculation of deflection, rotation, bending moment, shearing urce, and soil reaction of the curved wall are derived in nondimensional forms in this paper.

Underground excavations are subjected to complex stress changes caused by nearby mining, but may also be affected by repeated dynamic loading from blasting and seismic events. In some cases, the combined, cumulative effects can lead to unforeseen damage, displacement and instability. Simulating dynamic loading of an underground excavation is a very complex task. The state of rock mass stress, damage and deformation must first be simulated sufficiently requiring small-scale structures to be explicitly modelled. Supporting elements must be represented with high similitude and then the dynamic event must be applied to the system in the case of blasts, or evolve as a consequence of rock mass instability for seismic events. A special case is for the effect of pit blasting on underground excavations - discontinuous rock phenomena at scales from mine, to bench, to pillar, to tunnel need to be captured and this represents one of the most computationally intensive tasks in mine simulation. Recent advances in computer power allow these tasks to be completed at a mine scale, incorporating discontinuities and geological detail matching the best practice for static Finite Element analyses. The results are a worthwhile contribution to mine decision-making, but require careful interpretation and thoughtful inputs - even more so than quasi-static analysis - as the cumulative effects of unfavourable modeling practices are greater. Some learnings from experiences with mine scale, discontinuum dynamic simulation are summarised, including a discussion of considerations of scale and similitude for this type of analysis.

In 1992 environmental audits were carried out at seven coal mines operated by Oakbridge Limited in the Hunter Valley and Lithgow areas of NSW. The audit reports recommended a course of action designed to improve the environmental management system already in operation at the mines. This program started with training in environmental awareness for the Board of Directors, and the development and authorisation of an environmental policy. On-going programs at each mine were expanded to include environmental awareness training for all 2000 employees at the mines, and the development of a 20-module environmental training program which included air, water, soil and noise management, oil and chemical handling, sampling and monitoring, rehabilitation techniques and many more. Environmental incident reporting was introduced, and a system of reporting from the coal face through individual mine site environmental committees, to a Corporate Environmental Committee and up to the Board Environmental Committee became an effective part of a due diligence program. The Board resolved to undertake external independent environmental audits every two years, with internal reviews in the alternate years. An Environmental Management Group was formed, consisting of four internal environmental personnel and Oakbridge's appointed environmental consultant, to effectively resolve many of the environmental issues facing the Group. This program is continuing to evolve as an industry leader in environmental management Practice.

The behaviour of bacteria, especially 77iobacillus ferroaridans is outlined and the effects of these when they are exposed to pyrite, arsenopyrite and stibnite are examined. The factors which are particular to Central Victoria are outlined and the possibility of adapting a bacterial culture to suit the conditions is discussed. It is concluded that a bacterial leaching system is a feasible proposition and that it could enhance leaching rates and yields.

The recoveries of the three cobalt minerals in the Mount Cobalt deposit, cobaltite CoAsS, erythrite CO3(AS04)8H20, and new cobalt mineral with a composition approximating 2CoO.CaO.Fe203.2As205.11H2O were investigated using physical and surface-chemical processes.Over 80 per cent cobalt recovery was achieved by tabling a cobaltite-mineralized sample, while about 76 per cent cobalt recovery was obtained by dry feed magnetic separation of a sample containing erythrite and the new cobalt mineral. The resultant primary magnetic concentrate with a cobalt grade of 5.5 per cent, was able to be upgraded to 14.4 per cent cobalt by regrinding .and a further magnetic separation.Electrophoretic mobility - pH responses for each of the three cobalt minerals were found to be similar. Each mineral remained negative over the pH range 3 to 11 and was most negative at mildly alkaline pH values.Cobaltite was floated effectively with amyl and ethyl xanthate collectors under acidic conditions at collector concentrations of 10-2M to 10-5M. Erythrite showed a similar flotation response using 10-sM amyl xanthate. The practical application of these laboratory separations to an industrial process is suggested.

The sampling of a run-of-mine (ROM) ore with the objective of controlling the fundamental variance associated with the sampling step is a poorly understood subject. Finding the effective sampling constant by repetitive sampling to establish the variance between nominally identical subsamples of a given mass of the ore is a laborious, time-consuming and very expensive exercise. In this paper, the run-of-mine ore is modelled using three components: ore, waste, and relatively fine material which shows significant liberation of the mineral phase(s) carrying the target analyte. The expression for the sampling constant of the mixture is developed from first principles. The form of the equation provides insight into the factors that are important in controlling the magnitude of the sampling constant and hence the fundamental uncertainty associated with a given mass of sample. The controlling factors are shown to be the size distribution of the ore/waste mixture, the proportion of waste mixed with the ore and the extent of liberation and the size distribution of the liberated material in the finer fractions.

The concentrating plant of the Broken Hill South Limited was described in Proceedings No. 44, Australasian Institute Mining and Metallurgy, December, 1921, by Wainwright and Read. It was erected on the present site in 1907 and 1908.From that date, the plant has undergone various alterations consistent with metallurgical improvements. By 1925, the timber work of the gravity secti"on had seriously deteriorated, so much so, that, when the machinery was working, the floors and supports vibrated badly, causing heavy maintenance costs.In 1928, it was decided to erect a new gravity-treatment section, to be followed later by a new flotation section.

Industrial flotation plant design is a complex process involving many aspects, one of which is the use of pilot-scale plants to test industrial plant flow sheets. Once test work on a pilot-scale has been performed, scale-up of these results to the full-scale plant must be performed. This paper describes scale-up test work performed on the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR). The FCTR is a self-contained, highly instrumented mobile pilot plant designed to determine flotation model parameters and to develop and validate flotation plant modelling, scale-up and simulation methodologies.

The major strata control considerations which affect the optimisation of roadway driveage in highly stressed strata is the performance of reinforcement placed and the extent of stress induced rock deformation. High development rates and opening stability requires efficient rock reinforcement and stress relief strategies which maximise the integrity of the rock about roadways created. Current studies demonstrate the capability to reduce lateral stress distributions across panels and research is aimed toward a higher capacity bolting system. It is the intention to provide industry with more efficient reinforcement and stress control alternatives which will allow high production development equipment to operate without the restriction of delays caused by poor ground Conditions.

A Data Acquisition System with a capacity to monitor 2000 analog instruments has been installed at the mines operated by the Zinc Lorporation, Limited and New broken hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/LVbHC), New South Wales, Australia. Since commissioning in March, 1982, the system has proved its value in providing up-to-date information to both Rock Mechanics and Mining personnel. The paper describes the function of the major software and hardware components of the system, and identifies the advantages that an on-line monitoring system provides in the day-to-day operation of a large underground mine.

The first stage in the refining of lead blast furnace bullion is the removal of copper and this is normally done as a batch process in open kettles,A number of attempts have been made in the past to establish fontinuous processes operating in reverberatory type furnaces, but the growth of accretions in the furnace has always presented a serious problem.This has been overcome in the plant of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty Ltd at Port Pirie by the construction of a reverberatory furnace and ancillary cooling system of novel design.Although a number of mechanical and metallurgical problems still remain to be solved, it is claimed that a workable continuous copper drossing process has been established.

Analysis of mechanical size fractions of soils around the Paddington deposit (W.A.) and the Charters Towers Goldfields (Queensland) shows a bimodal gold distribution, with enrichment in the coarsest and finest fractions; this is probably a common feature of soils in arid terrains. To establish the true distribution of Au within the soil fractions, the effect of bulk Au content and percent weight variations in size fractions can be reduced by a normali- zing procedure. The greatest extent of lateral dispersion of Au recorded in the -125 ¦m fraction at Paddington and the -63 ¦m in the Charters Towers area as compared to the coarser fractions, and increas- ed levels of sample representivity in the finer fractions, favours their use in exploration. If orientation studies indicate the preferen- tial use of coarse or intermediate fractions, only wet sieving can quantitatively dis- aggregate the clays and remove finer contamina- ting material. The collection of extremely fine fractions such as the -63 ¦m is also accelerated by wet sieving. The additional costs of wet sieving may be offset by better interpretation of results through increased analytical sample representivity, anomaly contrast and continuity.

A flow sheet has been developed to treat a high tonnage highly preg-robbing gold ore. The ore is low grade and fine grained with a high proportion of very fi ne free gold. The key components of the flow sheet include gravity, flotation, intensive cyanidation with direct electrowinning, and carbon-in-leach of the flotation concentrate. The circuit produces a low overall mass pull to concentrate allowing economic intensive treatment of large tonnage low-grade material. Efficient recovery of fine gravity gold using a Falcon concentrator in both the milling and flotation circuits, and subsequent intensive cyanidation in a Gekko InLine Leach Reactor (ILR) is critical to the process with over 70 per cent gold recovery expected in this circuit. Grind size control was also found to be important in controlling the activity of the preg-robbers in the carbon in leach circuit and also in the solid liquid separation performance. Tests at the large-scale demonstration plant have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of this flow sheet. A large low-grade deposit is currently under development with the aim of developing a 10 Mt/a treatment plant with the subsequent addition of equivalent sized process lines in multiples of 10 Mt/a. The economic development of this orebody is critically dependant on understanding and exploiting the properties of the ore. In particular it is critical to minimise the effect of preg-robbers by recovering free gold with Falcon concentrators and InLine Leach Reactors. Recovery of the remaining gold by flotation into a small mass yield allows this fraction of gold to be treated by CIL leaching utilising high carbon levels. It is critical is to ensure operation at the optimal grind size to maximise liberation of the free gold and minimise pregrobber activity. The ore has been identified as preg-robbing with low recoveries obtained if treated using conventional cyanidation and carbon absorption. The mineralogy consists of predominantly fi ne grained free gold with minor sulfides including pyrite and arsenopyrite. With conventional cyanide leaching in the absence of carbon, gold recovery is less than 50 per cent. Direct cyanide leaching of the ore in the presence of activated carbon results in an improved but still uneconomic gold recovery. The gravity recoverable gold (GRG - as defined by Andre La Plante) content of the ore has been measured to be 70 per cent to 85 per cent in various tests with liberation grind size of approximately 106 ¦m. This indicates gold is predominantly free and suitable for recovery by batch centrifugal concentrators into a low mass yield. This property of the ore presents the opportunity to maximise the recovery of gold by separating it from the majority of the preg-robbers prior to leaching. Due to the very fine gold particle sizes and the necessity to maximise recovery of this fine fraction Falcon concentrators were selected for the duty, with their proven high recoveries at very fine gold sizes. The gravity recovery in the milling circuit is designed to be in the range 55 to 65 per cent. This has been achieved in the existing pilot plant using a Falcon operating on ball mill discharge within the mill recirculating load. Intensive leaching in an InLine Leach Reactor is essential to recover the gold from the gravity concentrates. Tabling is not a preferred option since recovery is lower than intensive cyanidation and any gold losses to table tails will report to CIL where recovery is reduced by the presence of preg-robbers. Furthermore, tabling recovery from the gravity concentrates is particularly poor due to the fine particle size of the free gold. ILR recoveries of 98 per cent were demonstrated in the pilot plant using an ILR100BA and leach conditions were investigated in the lab using pilot plant generated Falcon concentrate. Recovery of gold from the pregnant solution was achieved with direct electrowinning at pilot and efficiency and sizing parameters were determined at lab scale. To further increase free gold recovery Falcon concentrators will be installed in the flotation circuit. Location of the Falcons in the circuit is not finalised but installation on the rougher concentrate stream is favoured since it will allow multiple pass recovery. This is expected to recovery a further ten to 20 per cent of the gold, as indicated by lab tests on pilot plant generated material. The gravity concentrate from the flotation circuit will also be leached using InLine Leach Reactors. Initial intensive cyanidation tests carried out on lab generated flotation concentrates indicated higher recoveries than CIL can be obtained even though the concentrates contain significant levels of preg-robbing material. This can be explained by the high cyanide, high pH leaching conditions used in the ILR which alters the absorption equilibrium of the preg-robbers. Further optimisation of the leach conditions will be undertaken once more concentrate becomes available. Recovery of the remaining gold content is achieved by flotation into a small mass yield, however the preg-robbers are also recovered into this concentrate. Due to the presence of the preg-robbers gold leaching must be carried out in the presence of high levels of activated carbon in a CIL system. The recovery has been shown to be strongly dependant on the carbon loading and the concentrate particle size. The carbon competes against the preg-robbers for dissolved gold while excessive grinding increases the surface area and activity of the preg-robbers. This has been demonstrated in test work however the economic optimum leaching conditions and carbon loading have yet to be determined. The grind size is critical to the economics of the project, not only due to its effect on gold recovery but also due to its effect on the major operating and capital costs at both the front and back end of the process. It is critical to grind enough to obtain both gravity free gold and flotation liberation at low mass yields however over-grinding results in large increases in mill size and power at the front end and filtration or thickening costs at the tails. Because these unit operations treat essentially all the plant feed even small changes can result in major impacts on project economics. The viability of this project is greatly enhanced by the high recovery of gold into a small mass yield. In particular the production and intensive leaching of the free gold gravity concentrates will allow over 70 per cent of the gold to be recovered efficiently with minimal impact from preg-robbers. By using flotation the mass of the remaining fine preg-robber contaminated material, to be leached in CIL, is greatly reduced allowing this difficult material to be economically treated. A critical aspect of geometallurgy is quantifying mineralogical and textural relationships that affect mineral processing (eg, liberation and recovery). However, to date, this has been an expensive and time consuming venture and only minimal amounts of this type of data are typically available to be included in the mine planning process. Our research is focused on developing methods that will produce the required mineralogical and textural data rapidly and inexpensively. New methods of characterising liberation potential from image analysis of coarse particulate material and direct small-scale flotation measurement are compared with measurement of liberation at final grind size (ie conventional tests on MLA). The new tests are designed to rank the liberation potential of samples in order to classify an ore deposit into domains of low, medium and high liberation potential. This parameter can then be used to adjust the cutoff used to differentiate ore from waste. Results to date show that all tests provide the same ranking for the samples. The measurement based on coarse particulate material compares favourably to the results from MLA analyses on the same samples. Further work is being carried out to determine which of the tests will be the most effective in terms of time, effort and cost

Accounting for borehole damage in analytical modelling of explosively generated stress waves is important for predicting the finer details of the stress wave patterns observed in the field. The classical Sharpe's [19421 concept of an effective borehole larger than the initial borehole diameter has been widely accepted to explain material damage around a borehole. A new analytical model based on dynamic compaction is advanced to predict far-field stress wave patterns. This model supports field data corresponding to reduced frequency of oscillations and increased damping. The present model recovers the earlier result when compaction around the borehole representing borehole damage is ignored.
