A large amount of Be2C and BeO is formed during the Cu-Be alloy production process, because beryllium is a highly reactive element. Carbide and oxide formation impairs the production yield and the quality of the Cu-Be alloy products, and therefore should be minimised. As a first step for solving these problems in the process, the following thermodynamic properties of the Cu-Be-C-O system were investigated. Based on the results, the equilibrium relations of the Cu-Be-C-O system were clarified and the operational conditions of the current Cu-Be alloy production process were also examined and discussed.

The current emphasis within the mining industry to reduce the cost of production has stimulated interest in the fields of maintenance and operational reliability of capital intensive mining equipment. From an economic point of view, high reliability is desirable to reduce the maintenance costs of the systems. Two graphical methods consider reliability analysis. The first one, the method of Total Time on Test (177)-plotting deals with the reliability data which are free from trend and serial correlation. The second method which is based on time dependent modelling approach deals with the data which are not free from trends and serial correlation. The examples show how these graphical methods can be used to calculate the optimal maintenance intervals for components or systems.

A thousand writers have harped upon the wondrous nature of the inventive faculty. They realise that man is a creator, and that capital and labour alike are, and will always be impotent without machinery and processes that is invention. What Bacon has said is echoed by them all, "the introduction of new inventions seemeth to be the very chiefest of human actions. The benefit of new inventions may extend to all mankind-they make all men happy without injury to 'any' they are new creations and imitations of God's own works." My remarks will occupy another field I will refer to some of those features of the Patent Laws of different countries, which prevent the use of new inventions, oppress the development or inventive' genius, and diminish human happiness and progress' Wherever Patent Laws are framed and administered upon wrong principles, these results are inevitably found. A concise, complete, common-sense comparison of the chief Patent Laws of the world cannot easily be found but to avoid seeing scrappy, misleading references to Patent Law in the press particularly the English-would be equally difficult. Writers who are considered authorities so frequently make minor issues prominent and so uniformly fail to give weight to fundamental principles that the effect on the public is to mislead.

The steel industry is facing challenges on a global scale that include depletion of resources, huge energy consumption, and the emission of CO2. The demand for iron products is increasing due to the increased infrastructural development. Zimbabwe produced cast iron from scrap metals. However, there is currently a shortage of scrap, and yet Zimbabwe is rich in limonite ores that are currently being underutilised. The possibility of using limonite ore as a sustainable feed for pig iron production was investigated by preparing some limonite ore carbon composite pellets. The results showed that the addition of coal to the limonite ore and calcium carbonate mix to form the composite pellets resulted in a decrease in the drop number as well as the dry compressive strength of the composite pellets. This research aims to improve the physical properties of the green pellets by the careful addition of hydroxyethyl cellulose as a binder that was found to improve the physical properties of the green pellet. This is important for materials handling during the production process of the composite pellets. Results showed that the drop number was substantially improved by the addition of 0.4 wt per cent hydroxyethyl cellulose while the dry compression strength improved from 2.5 kg/pelIet to around 23 kg/pellet irrespective of the amount of binder added. The binder improved the physical strength of the iron-carbon composite pellets enough to allow for large-scale production of the pellets that can be an alternative and sustainable feed for cast iron production. However more results on the indurated compression strength and other properties such as the reduction degradation index, swelling index, and the reducibility test are required.

INTRODUCTION The association of methane with coal has been known almost since coal was first mined and in general it has been considered the curse of underground coal mining. Historically, most of the effort to handle this methane has been directed at diluting it to a safe level and preventing an explosive mixture of methane and oxygen from forming in any part of the mine. This is generally achieved by in-mine activites. This approach has two principal drawbacks, the severity of which are dependent on local conditions. The first is that the activity associated with the handling of the methane is undertaken in the mine and there- fore competes with the mining activity for the limited space available. The second drawback is that the whole methane handling activity is generally a cost to the coal because methane is so diluted that it cannot be used. Severe development difficulties were experienced soon after in-seam mining commenced at Appin Colliery in'1962. Thirteen years later no significant pro- gress had been made in overcoming some aspects of this development problem. Some success had been achieved in destressing roadways both in development and pillar extraction. Longwall retreat mining had shown promise of being highly productive but at an extremely high cost in terms of development requirements both in number of roadways and intensity of support in those roadways. No real advance was made in the problem of driving the first heading of a group of headings under conditions of apparently high stress in directions other than the preferred mining directions, although failure of the roof in this heading did seem to give easier work in the subsequent headings driven particularly if they were driven on narrow centres.

While specific definitions of the main categories of mineral reserves and mineral resources are becoming well established through the efforts of the Australasian Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) and the Combined Reserves International Reporting Standards Committee (CRIRSCO), there has been perhaps less attention paid to the standardisation of language used in the definition and reporting of Mineral Exploration Results and a clear understanding of the transition to Inferred Mineral Resources. This is an area of significant importance to small and medium sized enterprises in the mineral exploration sector as it represents in many cases the only tangible information by which the reader or potential investor can evaluate the future potential of such enterprises. By its very nature information in the Mineral Exploration Results category is incomplete, and frequently complex, and it is open to a broad range of interpretation by readers of various competency levels and disciplines. Many will have a short-term speculative view rather than a long-term perspective, with others out deliberately to misrepresent the information, and as such it can have an enormous impact on investment decisions if the risks associated with this information being reported are not fully understood. Authors of reports on Mineral Exploration Results, who may be Competent Persons or company directors, have to put themselves in the shoes of the reader of the report, second-guessing if you like what the reader will understand by a report, which in many cases will be of a highly technical nature. This raises reporting dilemmas and questions that require to be understood and addressed. Looking at reports on Mineral Exploration Results from the other side, readers have a degree of responsibility as well, particularly if they engage in an advisory or communications role. The tendency of commentators, journalists, analysts, and bulletin board posters to over-exaggerate the significance of a particular exploration result is all too familiar. Questions arise here as well about whether there should be more regulatory supervision and control exercised over those who use this information, all of whom greatly influence investment decisions, and many of whom have no idea there is a Reporting Code, far less an understanding of it. Examples are given and questions raised to illustrate the dilemmas surrounding the reporting of Mineral Exploration Results. In order to retain credibility with markets it is incumbent on companies to be transparent, not to be selective and to report all material information. On the other hand, information has to be taken and read in its proper context in order to avoid fuelling dramatic and unjustified company share price escalation. Timing of course is another factor that can affect the market price of shares, which may be beyond the control of those making the reports. Emotive and imprecise language, however, when reporting Mineral Exploration Results, coupled by speculation, can trigger damaging short runs on shares and destroy credibility where formerly there was long-term promise. The paper will review how Mineral Exploration Results are dealt with in various jurisdictions, and conclude that there has to be a balance between prescription and the tempering of undue optimism on the one hand, and the entrepreneurial spirit, which the industry needs, on the other.

Improving the performance and reducing the costs associated with export logistics chains is critical to the competitiveness of export coal mines. The fundamental practices associated with the use of export logistics chains made up of mine, trucking, rail and port operations are being challenged by the advent of third party operators on rail systems and the use of the Internet.Whilst individual mines can improve their processes to drive down their mining costs, they face major challenges in their endeavour to improve the performance of export logistics chains and reduce the significant logistics costs of moving coal from the mine to export ships, via the shared infrastructure of rail systems and ports. There is an increasing realisation that global competition is not only between mines but between coal export regions that are defined by their rail system and ports infrastructure.

I In an optical microscope, mild attack by cyanide solutions on various minerals can be observed by means of colour changes as well as etching patterns. However, the mineral may not be identifiable due to the coloured film. In some cases, a transfer algorithm between mechanical stages enables the surface-altered mineral to be identified in the SEM. A more severe attack may not be so informative, as it is not known whether the mineral attacked has been completely dissolved away. The leaching behaviour of some common minerals is described.

This paper deals briefly with three of the more controversial aspects of the geology of the Mount Isa ore deposits namely the geologic structures, the method of ore deposition and the origin of the ore.In the section on geologic structures, an outline is first given of the purely tectonic deformation advocated by the early authors. The current interpretation, which differs in the proposed order of events and causal forces, is then discussed. Other concepts, which attribute all or part of the deformation to sedimentary features or preconsolidation movement, are outlined ilnd commented on.The remaining two sections deal mainly with the better known lead-zinc orebodies. In the first of these a brief description and criticism is given of the early interpretation which was based on the deposition of successive waves of mineralisation which replacedindividual beds in the shales. The current ideas, which visualise emplacement of the ore between the beds rather than replacement of them, is then discussed. The final section develops the case for a sedimentary origin of the lead-zinc ores and broadly outlines the author's ideas concerning the evolution of the Mount Isa ore deposits.INTRODUCTIONAny consideration of the geology of Mount Isa must begin with the work of Blanchard and continue with that of Hall. Individually, or as co-authors, they published various papers on the geology of Mount Isa. Of these, the best known is their "Rock Deformation and Mineralisation at Mount Isa" (1941) which gave a comprehensive account of all aspects of Mount Isa geology.It is necessary to appreciate the limits set on geological knowledge of the mine and environs in 1941 by the extent of mine development and regional geologic studies. IncoÆs Clarabelle mill currently processes ores from eight mines in the Sudbury basin area in Ontario, Canada. The ore from the Garson mine contains a much higher concentration of arsenic than the other ores. Adding this ore into the feed to the mill has resulted in an increase in arsenic content of the Cu-Ni bulk concentrate to a level that significantly affects the smelter operation, and more importantly the efficiency of Cu-Ni separation in the Matte separation plant. The arsenic occurs mainly as gersdorffite (NiAsS), with a small amount being in the form of cobaltite (CoAsS). Extensive laboratory tests on depressing arsenic in Garson ore flotation have been conducted and two reagent suites have been identified as effective arsenic depressants. One is the so called MAA depressant which is a mixture of magnesium chloride, ammonium chloride, and ammonium hydroxide. This reagent combination was reported to depress other arsenide minerals such as arsenopyrite (FeAsS) and enargite (Cu3AsS4). However, in this study for the first time it has been shown to have a depressing effect on gersdorffite. The other reagent suite, a mixture of triethylenetetramine (TETA) and sodium sulfite, that has been reported as an effective pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS) depressant in pentlandite ((NiFe)9S8) flotation, has not been reported as gersdorffite depressant before. The effectiveness of both reagent suites is more pronounced when the arsenic minerals are oxidised through pulp aeration or the addition of hydrogen peroxide. With a flow sheet consisting of a magnetic separation, rougher- scavenger flotation, followed by regrinding and cleaning of combined magnetic and scavenger concentrate, the arsenic recovery to the final Cu-Ni bulk concentrate was reduced from 73 per cent in baseline test to less than 30 per cent with either reagent suite at no decrease in nickel recovery. The TETA/sulfite reagent combination has the advantage over the MAA suite in that pyrrhotite is also depressed, rather than being activated, and the copper and nickel concentrate grades are therefore increased.

Anglo Platinum recognised with its expanded operations the need to change its evaluation strategy due to increased sample volumes and the pressure it created at laboratories. The sender/receiver analytical scenarios had to change in order to curb costs and to prevent substantial investments in new sampling and analytical facilities. Given the high cost associated with correct sampling systems and sampling protocols and the shortage of technical resources a strategy of single point sampling and analysis was introduced. The analysis was then done at an ISO17025 accredited laboratory with ten per cent checks, subjected to careful statistical scrutiny. Logistical problems increased with respect to weighbridge congestion, maintaining sampling quality, throughput of samples in the sample preparation areas, manual quality control systems in place, audit trails and analytical capacity throughout all operations. This required the expedited improvement of existing sampling practices and the development of new sampling methods and equipment. Anglo Platinum is classifying and standardising sampling equipment, sample preparation and analytical procedures for all process streams with the view to minimise overall uncertainties. Major investments were made into a customised LIMS and automated equipment for data management, reduction of manual transcription errors and streamlining of sample processing. Anglo Platinum is committed in rolling out the enhancements to all sites as priority dictates.

On 30 June 2020, the Mine Land Rehabilitation Authority (the Authority) superseded the Latrobe Valley Mine Rehabilitation Commissioner as the independent overseer of Victoria’s declared mine rehabilitation. Currently, only the Latrobe Valley’s three brown coalmines are declared, with each mine at a different stage of rehabilitation and closure planning: Hazelwood ceased mining in 2017, Yallourn is scheduled to end mining in 2028 and Loy Yang in 2035. The three declared mines are very large, close together (Figure 1) and present significant environmental risks that must be mitigated during rehabilitation and post closure. In addition to fire risks, the brown coalmines are inherently unstable and require continuous monitoring and management of ground movements and groundwater pressures. Since 2007 several damaging events have occurred, highlighting the difficulties of achieving long-term stability, even with good landform design and rigorous ground control management plans

The Argyle deposit in the Kimberley region of Western Australia was the world’s largest accumulation of natural diamonds. Following its discovery in 1979, the mining of associated alluvial diamonds commenced in 1983, followed by the pipe in late 1985. Over the life of the mine to its closure in November 2020, Argyle produced approximately 900 million carats of diamonds. Argyle diamonds are distinctive in having a predominance of brown colours and rare highly-prized pink diamonds, which are a signature of the deposit. The 3D geological model developed from mining and deep drilling shows that Argyle is a composite pipe formed by the coalescence of several steep-sided diatremes, each with their own feeder zones at depth, that were erupted along a NNE-trending fault. The ~1.2 Ga Argyle pipe is comprised of diamondiferous olivine lamproite volcaniclastic rocks and intruded by sparse olivine lamproite dykes. The volcaniclastic rocks are predominantly comprised of unconsolidated quartz-rich lapilli and coarse ash deposits formed by numerous phreatomagmatic eruptions of olivine lamproite magma through Mesoproterozoic water-rich sands and silts. Post-emplacement deformation has tilted the orebody 30° to the north and regional strike-slip faulting has offset, segmented, and elongated the orebody. Recent significant modifications of the geological model resulted from underground block cave operations, producing several critical lessons learnt. Diamond grade and quality reconciliation issues warranted a geological investigation which resulted in the recognition of new volcaniclastic olivine lamproite domains with a broad range of diamond grades, including some very high-grade units. The new lamproite domains had a significant effect on the block cave mining and resultant recovery of diamonds. The new findings enable a more coherent and detailed geological understanding of the volcanic emplacement and paragenetic sequence of the Argyle AK1 pipe. Structural modelling of the deposit also played a major role in the block cave mining tonnage recoveries and daily operations. The re-examination of the geology of the Argyle pipe and the results of this new information reinforces the need for ongoing robust geological work both in the early stages of mining a deposit and continued during the life of the mine.
