In narrow orebodies the use of ordinary kriging (OK) may pose certain limitations when used for grade control modelling. The smoothing effect of kriging, by its very nature, cannot retain or accurately characterise the dispersion (variability) that is inherent in gold deposits. This dispersion is a critical component of determining the desired level of ore loss and dilution.Fixed block model positions used in OK, and all estimation approaches, within a grade control process may never align with the ‘true’ ore boundary. This may lead to excessive ore loss and dilution, especially within narrow lodes.Using a risk-based approach to ore block design based on the geostatistical method of conditional simulation (CS) can highlight the differences achieved when an alternative method to OK is used for grade control modelling. By using a mesh of nodes and the application of a ‘transfer function’ to the simulation models, the position for ore contacts can be better assessed than when using fixed blocks in OK. Therefore, the value of various ore block boundaries can be better analysed by objective assessment of ore loss and dilution for a given minimum mining selectivity (selective mining unit or SMU), even in narrow lodes.A case study of a narrow vein gold deposit, comparing the results from an OK model and a CS model shows that whilst both models show similar trends – waste, low-grade, and high-grade regions are the same in both cases – the simulation model can provide greater insight for optimal definition of the mineralisation boundary.CITATION:Haylett, M E, Weeks, A, Matthews, G D and Khosrowshahi, S, 2014. The traditional form of project financing for resource related projects has involved project financings structured with either recourse to the project sponsor(s) or commercial banks accepting the project's risks, usually after project completion, subject to, inter alia, the nature of the project, geographical location, quality of the projected cash flows and commodity price outlook. However, the concept of commodity-linked borrowings hasadded a new dimension for borrowing opportunities for resource-oriented projects and or companies.

Current regional geoscientific studies across the McArthur Basin as part of the National Geoscience Mapping Accord by the Northern Territory Geological Survey and Australian Geological Survey Organisation have provided a significant amount of new data which has enabled revision of the stratigraphic and chronologic framework of the basin. This paper provides an overview of these results, with particular emphasis on new results from Arnhem Land.

Dugald River Mine (DRM) is located approximately 85 km north-east of Mount Isa, and 65 km northwest of Cloncurry, in the north-west Queensland Minerals Province of Australia. DRM is an underground operation and includes an above ground processing area, a 200 ha tailings facility, two waste rock dumps and associated infrastructure. The mining method is conventional underground longhole open stoping and downhole benching of a lead/zinc deposit within a black slate environment. The deposit is estimated to contain ~53 Mt of zinc and lead, which will be mined over a 30-year period. During operations, waste rock is segregated into either Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) or Non-Acid Forming (NAF) based primarily on the sulfide concentration of the rock. In particular, the NAF waste rock is an asset and is used for various small construction projects during operation; however, its primary use is for rehabilitation work at closure. Since beginning operations in 2017, DRM has generated more NAF than was originally anticipated. Whilst this is an excellent asset to DRM, it did pose a logistical problem of where to store the additional NAF for the life-of-mine and how to manage the run-off. DRM experiences distinct wet and dry seasons with hot conditions and periods of rainfall between November to April, and relatively dry and mild conditions between May to October. Majority of rainfall is received between January and February with an annual average rainfall of 501.1 mm. Short and intense rainfall events are common. DRM’s above ground infrastructure is land-locked between two large ephemeral watercourses, making the significant expansion of any assets challenging from a permitting/regulation and cost perspective. MMG is also a member of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) and is committed to adapting to a changing climate through operations and closure. Following extensive studies DRM opted to store the additional NAF material into the adjoining NAF Dam and concurrently upgrade a previously minor sediment basin into a highly engineered sediment basin which relies on automatic flocculant dosing to meet the required discharge quality limits. This basin is climate-resilient in that the dosing system can be adjusted to counter high intensity extended rainfall events which produce highly variable inflow water quality. This abstract broadly describes how DRM designed and implemented an engineering innovation to enable the site to meet the changing climatic challenges. The abstract then describes the process to design the sediment basin and how the dosing rate was established and validated. Finally, the abstract comments on the effectiveness of the sediment basin and how it has revolutionised DRM’s approach to water treatment and management; all whilst minimising the disturbance footprint of the operation

The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin & Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal. The paper will review the fundamental policy issues and options that have been considered in the determination of the proposed allocation and pricing (ie royalty) regime for minerals under the Crown Minerals Act 1991. It will consider such influences on the new disposal, allocation, pricing and management arrangements for the Crown's mineral estate as the existence of prior ownership claims, exclusivity in access, the requirement for cost recovery and the treatment of contingent liabilities.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The Middle Palaeozoic Gurvansaikhan Belt (Southern Mongolia) of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt is one of Central Asia’s most significant emerging porphyry copper provinces. The belt has become the focus of extensive exploration for porphyry copper-gold deposits over the last decade following the discovery of the giant Oyu Tolgoi porphyry copper-gold deposit. The Gurvansaikhan Belt is known to host porphyry deposits of Late Devonian (~370 Ma) and Early Carboniferous (~320 Ma) age. The characteristics of Early Carboniferous porphyry systems are poorly known compared to their older counterparts, despite their probable abundance and potential economic significance. Exploration within the Kharmagtai porphyry breccia complex has identified multiple cogenetic gold-copper-porphyry centres and late-stage mineralised magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias emplacement within a composite high-K calc-alkaline quartz monzodiorite intrusive complex. Early porphyry alteration and mineralisation at Kharmagtai are zoned around vertically attenuated early- and inter-mineral quartz monzodiorite dykes and stocks and comprises a complex sequence of calc-potassic, potassic and propylitic assemblages. Hematite dusting is a common alteration product that gives intrusions and the host rocks a distinctive pink-orange colour. Several of the systems have bornite-rich cores, where mineralisation is characterised by high gold grades (0.7 to >5 g/t Au) that zone outward to chalcopyrite-rich and then outer pyritic halos. Early stockwork mineralisation is overprinted by magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias. High-grade magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline breccias form part of a major copper-gold mineralised breccia system with significant exploration potential. The Early Carboniferous porphyry copper-gold systems of the Gurvansaikhan Belt represent a substantial exploration challenge in an area of increasing exploration maturity. This paper summarises the characteristics of the Kharmagtai porphyry system that have helped to define the Early Carboniferous porphyry province of the Gurvansaikhan Belt and discusses implications for future exploration.CITATION:Stewart, A L and Baatar, M, 2015. This paper summarises the results of a study carried out for the Sustainable Minerals Institute, University of Queensland, aimed at identifying the major water-related issues facing the minerals industry internationally and the research required to support the development of practicable solutions. An overview is given of the sources and uses of the worldÆs water resources and of the regional and global sustainability of water supply and management. Agriculture is the worldÆs major user of water; it wastes more water than the minerals industry uses. Water reform and its potential impact on the minerals industry are discussed with particular reference to Australia and South Africa. The sources, uses and management of water on mine and processing sites are outlined. Particular attention is paid to the importance of groundwater as a source of often saline water that can be used in mineral processing and for other purposes. Aquifer storage and recovery has the potential to help conserve water resources. Generally, the major uses of water on mining and processing sites are for mineral processing and refining and for the associated tailings disposal. Water consumption for these purposes may be reduced by recycling process water, using saline water, paying close attention to water management, thickening tailings and using techniques such as dry stacking and paste. A change in the minerals processing paradigm in respect of water use could come through research into new, improved and less costly dry processing techniques. The treatment of mine and processing water will be required increasingly before water is reused, stored, discharged or sold, and before sites are decommissioned. Research and development are required to reduce costs and develop new treatment methods. Mine closure and decommissioning raise a number of long-term water issues requiring continuing generic and site-specific research and development.

It is a great privilege to be invited to give this address at this centenary conference. A centenary is a time for recollection, for celebration and for looking ahead. The AusIMM has much to celebrate and many things to recall. I hope in this address to make some useful comments about Australia's future (and mindful of but not forgetting New Zealand), looking ahead for 25 years or so, and the mining industry's role in that future.

The explosion of a charge in a drillhole sets the surrounding rock mass into vibrating stress wave motion. Except in the immediate vicinity of the drillhole, the dynamic stresses associated with this motion do damage only to pre-existing joints, cracks, or other weak planes, not to the rock material in between these. The joints are weak in tension, therefore the damage occurs as a result of tensile stresses. The initial damage process in the rock mass that ultimately breaks loose in front of the hole is similar to that in the remaining rock behind the drillhole. Recorded or calculated values of the vibration velocity and frequency contain a wealth of information about the combination of stress and strain that causes the damage. This paper outlines a new technique by which the peak strain energy derived from measured or calculated vibration velocity records is used to determine the local fragment size distribution. It combines two previously known and well tested techniques, namely the Holmberg-Persson calculation of the peak vibration velocity generated by an extended charge and King's calculations of the fragment size distribution as a function of the strain energy in rock crushing. Both of these calculations are based on experimental data and have been tested and found to agree well with actual conditions in their respective fields. Holmberg-Persson's calculated peak vibration velocities have been used successfully to predict and control damage to the remaining rock in cautious blasting, while King's calculation successfully describes the comminution of rock in mechanical crushing. Preliminary predictions of fragmentation in two types of rock blasting, a large hole open pit mining blast and a tunnel round, indicate that the new technique for fragmentation prediction has the potential for predicting fragment size distributions within the rock removed by the Blast.

The substantial growth in world demand for Queensland coking coal has seen a number of new coal mine developments in the Bowen Basin in recent times. The Bowen-Broken Water Supply Scheme (BBWSS) is presently based on water supplied from Eungella Dam and storages at Collinsville to two major pipelines. In early 2004, three successive years of well-below average rainfall had left Eungella Dam at critical levels, threatening the regionÆs mines, which rely on it for their essential water supply. SunWater noted that without significant inflows into Eungella Dam, or the development of a new water supply to the region, existing mines would be severely restricted in water supply, and downstream economic impacts to the region would follow. SunWater investigated the opportunities for additional supply capabilities, including combinations of off-stream storages, additional pipelines, and raising Eungella Dam. An off-stream storage (OSS) was selected as being the preferred option to improve the reliability of the system and head off impending falls in announced allocation for the system. The integrated quantity quality model (IQQM) is the Queensland GovernmentÆs preferred model to define and assess total catchment performance against water security and environmental objectives. Modelling of the performance of the water supply system, with and without the proposed OSS, was required to provide justification to the customers of the system that the OSS was in fact required, and also to optimise the configuration of the OSS within time and budgetary constraints. In the case of the BBWSS, no environmental base flows are dictated by the Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Water (NRM&W) at present and the primary reason for applying IQQM was therefore to investigate the trade-offs between supply options and reliability. SunWater produced IQQM outputs for a range of scenarios for the proposed off-stream storage, and these IQQM outputs were then used as input to a decision-support tool based on the GoldSim modelling package. The GoldSim model was then applied to investigate the water supply reliability for high priority users resulting from various existing and/or proposed water supply infrastructure configurations coupled to the hydrologic system. The GoldSim model included the ability to assess the long-term water supply reliability impacts for each of the water supply end-users for a wide range of user-defined scenarios. Non-technical model users were able to change the size of the off-stream storage, pipeline capacities and assumed climatic conditions and test for themselves the relative benefits (in terms of water supply reliability) of different infrastructure configurations under consideration. The decision tool was of significant benefit in assisting the decision process to SunWaterÆs mining customers. These customers needed to decide if they felt that the increased reliability in their water supplies from the system that would be created warranted the estimated increased charges that would require to be levied to recover costs of the new infrastructure with appropriate profit margins. The conjunctive use of IQQM and GoldSim was successful in demonstrating the impact of both hydrological and non-hydrological issues on the future water supply reliability in the BBWSS and resulted in a decision to proceed with the construction of a new OSS.

Mechanical cleaning of coal was porforined in a few small plants in New South Wales from 1577 brit the first large coal washeries were built by Broken Hill Wbprietary Company Limited and Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Limited in the late 1940's. Mechanization of colleries in the 1950bs was abcomp" anied by construction of many coal washing plants and in the 1960's the growth of the coal export trade gave further impetus to the coal preparation industry. Design of coal preparation plants in Australia is modelled on practice overseas. Planning of a new plant in- volves investigation of many factors both technical and economic and the preparation of a specification by the operator for the designer's guidance. A wide range of preparation processes and equipment is on offer, but the nature of the coal to be treated and the separating efficiency desired usually dictate process selection. Simple or moderately difficult separation can be achieved with jigs, shaking tables or water washing cyclones. Coal which is difficult to treat or which has to be cut at a specific gravity lower than 1.5 is normally washed in a heavy medium process. In large plants it is usual to separate the coal into large, small and fine fractions and concentrate each fraction in a circuit designed to suit the grain size handled.

Over the past 5 years, Bougainville Copper Limited has undertaken a number of major plant expansions to the copper concen- trate production plant at Bougainville in the North Solomons Province of Papua New Guinea. These projects have scheduled three additional ball mills, three new banks of Outokumpu flotation cells, four additional tertiary screens, two additional tertiary crushers, and more recently four high capacity 24.5m dia. tailing thickeners. The value of the five separate projects totalled more than A$100 million. A requirement of commissioning and bringing on line of each of these projects has been to minimise both operational losses and copper concentrate production. The commissioning has been successfully implemented by detailed planning of the commissioning work in conjunction with the plant operation. Planning has been detailed for each man involved on an hourly basis, highlighting the work required on each commissioning task that is to be undertaken and the time expected to achieve activity Completion.

A new class of collectors, Mercapto-Benzo-Oxazoles (MBO), exerting selective action on copper sulphides in the presence of Pb, Zn and Fe sulphides (galena, sphalerite and pyrite), has been synthesised in co-operation with Enichem's Donegani Insitute. The collectors have a mixed aliphatic-aromatic structure and contain functional groups which form chelates with copper. Some reagents of this class having hydrocarbon chains of various lengths have been laboratory tested on a complex sulphide ore containing chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite in pyritic gangue. Comparative flotation tests have permitted selection of the best collector for chalcopyrite, namely Methyl-Mercapto- Benzoxazole (MMBO). Systematic flotation tests have been performed with this reagent, varying collector concentration, grain size of the feed, pH and flotation time. The results obtained show that the synthesised collector is much better than potassium-amylxanthate (KAX) as regards selectivity towards Pb and Zn. Moreover, it is possible to work at natural pH (6-7) and the flotation rate is higher. In fact in the rougher stage with 80 g/t of collector at natural pH, a copper grade of 7.14 per cent was obtained with a recovery of 73.87 per cent, while the grade with KAX did not exceed 2.11 per cent for a recovery of 73.54 per cent. The amount of Pb and Zn reporting in the copper concentrate was eight per cent and ten per cent respectively, while with KAX it was no lower than 24.34 per cent and 22.71 per cent in that order. After two minutes flotation a copper grade of 5.2 per cent with 52 per cent recovery could be attained, against a grade of 2.5 per cent and a recovery of 44 per cent in the case of KAX. The efficiency of this new collector has been ascertained on two samples of complex sulphide ores of diverse mineralogical composition.

The increasing introduction of high capacity mechanical equipment into the coal mines of New South Wales following. tforld War II brought with it problems of roof support. Rapidly advancing headings in difficult country could not be supported with heavy, close,timbering due to the time involved in installation and the reduction of available' space for the movement of machines. _ The installation of low cost, space saving, rapidly installed roof supports became a necessity if the new mechanical equipment wa-s to be allowed to operate at maximum efficiency. As, a result of experience in the United States of America, the system of roof support using steel reinforcing bolts began to find increasing, popularity in the mechanised mines in this State. From the somewhat'crude methods of in- stallation adopted in some of the, early trials, the practice of roof bolting has advanced into a-highly technical operation, requiring care and skill to ensure optimum results.

Land surface deformation can be caused by underground mining activities. The maximum subsidence normally occurs directly above the location of the excavation of the coal seam. In the case where the longwall mining technique is applied, the magnitude and shape of the subsidence bowl are constrained by the longwall structure (pillar). This paper describes the use of satellite radar interferometry for monitoring surface subsidence due to underground mining, as a cost-effective geodetic technique and complementary to conventional ground surveying techniques. This paper uses data acquired by the current generation of SAR satellites û the European ENVISAT and the Japanese ALOS û to monitor ground subsidence in the southern highland coalfield in New South Wales, Australia. An accumulated DInSAR subsidence mine map is produced using six successive ALOS acquisitions. The results are post-analysed with the aid of geographic information systems (GIS) and validated using ground survey data.

There are continuing developments in underground narrow vein mining, from innovative mining methods using low-profile equipment to adaptations of current mining methods using equipment such as road-headers. The development of new mining methods and mining equipment has one purpose in mind û to extract narrow reef orebodies keeping dilution to a minimum, whilst maximising mining recovery. Achieving this will increase the head grade of the ore mined and reduce the tonnes delivered to the mill. Narrow vein mining in Australia has been limited to traditional hand held or mechanised drill and blast methods using existing æoff the shelfÆ equipment. Numerous trials have been undertaken using rock cutting technology and lower profile equipment, but these mining trials have not resulted in the full implementation of any new mining method or the adoption of low profile equipment in narrow vein mines as an accepted mining methodology. Mine operators in Canada and South Africa have teamed up with a number of equipment manufacturers and have taken steps to further mechanise and automate the mining of narrow vein orebodies, in particular to increase safety and productivity. The challenge to Australian narrow vein mining projects is to capitalise on work undertaken by overseas mining companies and equipment suppliers and to investigate the adaptation of low profile coal mining machinery to specialised metalliferous mining. With the inevitable fall in metal prices, it is necessary for Australian mine owners and mining contractors to apply these specialised methods and equipment to make narrow vein mining profitable.

Non-intrusive methods for the reliable determination of dragline bucket and rigging performance have been achieved using physical modelling. Modelling offers a logical first step towards developing mathematical simulation models. The process of physical modelling has been applied successfully to predict dragline bucket performance and capacity as well as to demonstrate the effect of varying dump rope length on performance. ACIRL's Surface Miming Group has used physical modelling to carry out dragline bucket sizing for a new high productivity bucket and compared performance with Throng Coal's existing dragline bucket. The predicted bucket performance has since been confirmed in the field using dragline monitoring techniques.

The global goal of Sustainable Development is not achievable without major changes in the way goods and services are delivered and material needs are satisfied, which requires tremendous innovation in the supply chains and life cycles in which minerals and energy processing take part. Values derived from minerals and metals processing need to be delivered with a fraction of current ecological impacts, which means removing technical obstacles to eliminating waste and emissions in the minerals cycle. The challenge is to find economically attractive ways to get there, through eco-efficiency gains in existing operations, capturing regional synergies, streamlining and greening the materials supply chain, and commercialising new process technology and new products. This paper summarises the outcomes of the Sustainable Resource Processing project, which was designed to provide a strategic analysis of what sustainability means for minerals and metals processing and how that can be effectively translated into technical and business innovation.

The Hydrogeological Survay of the bauxite mines in Hungary was establisned 30 years ago. The goal of the HS has been to collect the all available date needed to solve the hydrogeological problems of bauxite mines. The results of activity of the HS have been summarized in the annual reports-. This report is going to present a few methods to evaluate the hydrogeological properties of fissured, karstic rock ie. the evaluation of drilling mud losses, the statistics of core samples evaluated by a special computer program for calculation the porosity and permeability of the rocks. An experimental injection test is presented together with the development of a new portable instrument to get signes of the water table change during the injection test in every two second. It can be proved that the flow around the well may be a transient one if the yield of the injection exceeds a definite one (Figure 2.). It was observed that the permeability calculated from the pumping test date may be 1.2-1.6 time higher than it coming from the injection test. A practical example is presented also how to use the results of the HS for designing the dewatering of a new mine together with an analogous computer model to forecast the yield expectable for making the drift tunnel. A suggestion based on the hydrogeological feature has been done for the dewatering without using electric energy (see Figure 3.-6.).
