Better quality at lower cost is today's formula for remaining competitive in a world market. For an integrated steel company, high quality low cost steel production must originate before the blast furnace. In 1979, when U.S. Steel initiated a Quality Management Program throughout its steelmaking operations, efforts began at the coal, ore and flux mines. The objective was to improve the quality and reduce the variability of the critical parameters for steelmaking raw materials, to get the blast furnaces, and subsequently the melt shops, under optimum control. The general details of U.S. Steel's Quality Management Program are discussed and how it was used to promote the desired improvements in steelmaking raw materials. Some of the outstanding results obtained by the cooperative efforts between the mines and the steel plants are reported. The lessons learned by U.S. Steel were through upgrading existing operations and facilities. These principles should now be applied to new projects and the benefits of good quality management should commence from the time new projects are Commissioned.

The SRS-1200 concept came about following the recommendations from the Board of Inquiry into the 1994 Moura No 2 mine disaster with the aim of having a system to remove personnel from an unsafe environment underground via a shaft where no other means of escape is possible. It is a mobile rescue unit that utilises a winding system to operate a man cage. It can descend the cage up to 1200 m into a vertical shaft. This operation is managed from the winder control compartment located on the non-driver side at the rear of the vehicle.

The history and milestones in the evolution of support systems utilised in the mass-mined chrysotile mines of Shabanie and King are discussed in detail. The use of block caving, false footwall or sublevel caving mining methods brings with it some major support problems, which are exacerbated, in our low rock strength mining environments. The paper discusses the various support elements and systems that have been used successfully or otherwise in these operations. Some predictions for the future of rock reinforcing in our ground conditions are highlighted, in relation to geomechanics, levels of mechanisation and production risk analysis.

A positive mill reconciliation at a mine is a double-edged-sword. Much back slapping happens. The bank and the board can’t get enough until the downside becomes apparent. Over a prolonged period, there becomes an issue with market perception and the potential for shareholders to be misinformed regarding the potential value of the project. In addition, there are impacts on mine scheduling, waste allocation (or lack thereof), government expectations, and the potential for misguided external assumptions regarding the ‘unexpected’ results. The PT Agincourt Resources Martabe Gold Mine has shown a significant under-call, in the order of 20% total gold metal, between the Mineral Resource (MR) estimates and Grade Control (GC) estimates since production commenced in 2012. Recently, the under-call has been reduced by incorporating the use of grade control drilling in the MR grade estimates. Despite recent improvements in reconciliation, drilling in 2017 at both Purnama and Barani open pits shows that infill reverse circulation (RC) drill holes often produce significantly higher grades than those predicted in the MR block model. An integral part of the Brisbane Suburban Railway Electrification involved the relining, refurbishment and track lowering in the Roma Street, Brunswick Street and Gloucester Street double track tunnels. The design and the construction procedures had to satisfy the Queensland Railways electrification clearance and track standards and the requirements of maintaining track services through the tunnels during work. Refurbishing of the tunnel linings was carried out to extend the life of the tunnels.

"The requirement for environmental approvals and associated environmental impact assessments (EIAs) is now commonly regarded as a key milestone and body of work during project development. EIAs can be undertaken at various phases during project development, generally either:\ during the scoping or prefeasibility studies, where limited project information is available and the mitigation and management measures of the EIA become a set of criteria and commitments that control project design during the feasibility study, as an iterative approach whereby mitigation and management measures are developed through an integrated process with the engineering team, and measures are included in the feasibility study cost model following the feasibility study, where detailed project design information is available, the cost model is complete, and the EIA is an assessment of a fixed project with limited opportunities for mitigation and management measures to be integrated into engineering design. This paper investigates the advantages of integrating EIA into life-of-mine planning during the feasibility study phase, using the Tampakan Copper-Gold Project (the Project) as a case study. The Tampakan Project is located in the Philippines on the southern island of Mindanao. The Project involves the proposed development of three main areas of infrastructure:a large-scale, open pit copper-gold mine and associated mine site infrastructure (including tailings and mine waste storages, fresh water dam, concentrator, etc) a power station, port and filter plant (PPFP), located approximately 60 km from the mine a pipeline and transmission line linking the mine and PPFP sites.Examples of engineering measures developed through an iterative process to mitigate and manage predicted environmental and social impacts include design of water management infrastructure, modification of the disturbance footprint (eg roads realigned to avoid critical habitat) and realignment of project infrastructure to minimise impacted water catchments.CITATION:Blunt, J and Jones, J, 2012. The Mt Morgan Minesite in Central Queensland has been subject to both underground and surface gold mining operations since the late-1800s. The site is largely unrehabilitated and poor quality surface run-off and subsurface leachate is contaminating the nearby Dee River. The site is dominated by a large open cut, which now stores contaminated surface and subsurface run-off. Three models were used to simulate the complex hydrologic processes occurring at the Mt Morgan Mine: a rainfall-run-off model, a groundwater model and a storage behavioural model. Study results showed that the open cut is filling with water and will soon spill large volumes of highly polluted water to the Dee River on a regular basis if no remedial action is taken. This will result in a three-fold increase in pollutant load to the Dee River. Based on a consideration of water quality and quantity it was concluded that the first priority for future minesite water management should be the prevention of spills from the open cut. Potential management options to achieve this objective included surface rehabilitation, catchment diversions, modification of the pump-back system and controlled releases to the Dee River during floods. However, assessing the relative effectiveness of these measures required a thorough understanding of the complex surface and subsurface hydrology of the site. The results of a 100 year simulation of hydrologic processes revealed that previously favoured management options would be ineffective in preventing spills to the river. On this basis, a continuous treat and release strategy was proposed as the only reliable method of preventing future spills. The results of this study demonstrate that good environmental management decisions must be based on an understanding of the relevant physical processes and consideration of cumulative effects over an appropriate time scale.

Consequently they have a number of limitations. This paper describes a new dredge control concept which paves the way for improved efficiency and increased production.

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF batching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid batching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically recover isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

Many of the other 11 small island nations in the region, such as Vanuatu, Pulau and the Solomons have been the subject of considerable exploration orientated towards gold in the past few years but without any deposit found with confirmed economic viability.

Bauxite Resources Limited is grade drilling in its Western Australian Darling Range tenements to firm up resource definition and to develop mine plans. The Darling Range bauxite is generally in shallow deposits with minimum overburden. In the northern tenements, the ore is characterised by a higher silica layer which may extend from 0.5 to 1.5 m below, which high grade bauxite is found to a depth of four to 7 m. When grade drilling samples are taken, every 0.5 m and the recovered sample is weighed, logged and bagged. To eliminate splitting errors, the whole sample over the short interval is pulverised. Twinning holes variations are observed when using various drill rigs. Diamond core has been shown to give close to 100 per cent recovery and grades have been verified by digging bulk samples. As such, diamond core is used as the reference. It is intended to include sonic drilling as an alternative to diamond cores. This presentation details and attempts to explain the reasons for the observed variations in the various drilling methods used by Bauxite Resources Limited. In preparation of this Paper, the emphasis has been laid on the commercial rather than on the technical and scientific aspects of coal evaluation. It is intended to describe and comment on the principal factors which currently determine the selection and procurement of coking coal for the steel industry, and is not based on the results of any original research by the author. Evaluation of different coals for strictly thermal uses, for gas production or other chemical applications has not been attempted, and comparisons of coal with other fuels have been excluded: the paper is concerned only with coals for the production of blast furnace coke. The discussion is strongly related to, and illustrated by, British, and to some extent, other Western European practice, but it is hoped that the general conclusions may have a wider application.

HISTORY Up until the late 1880's the mining industry acquired a considerable proportion of its capital needs from domestic sources. Exchanges were established wherever major new fields were opened and Ballarat, Bendigo, Charters Towers, Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and Silverton all boasted active trading in mining shares. For much of the first half of this century there was only modest developments in the mining industry and its capital require- ments were correspondingly lower. RECENT EXPERIENCE The new mines of the sixties were, in many cases, characterised by their remote situation and their output of bulk commodities such as iron ore., coal and bauxite. Infra- structure costs were particularly high and the level of capital expenditure was of previously unheard of proportions.

Blast exclusion zones are instrumental in protecting equipment and personnel. When there is no constraint in footprint, the exclusion zone can be enormous, practically eliminating the hazard of flyrock. Unfortunately, this may not always be the case and in many circumstances the blast design needs to be altered to suite such scenarios. When a conservative design approach is taken, it could completely eliminate any form of ejection, whether it is from the free face or the bench itself. The degree to which typical flyrock models describe fragment motion through air with ballistic flight equations are not justified when such a high level of control is applied. The studies of pulp electrochemical flotation separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite were made from the thermodynamics, mineral natural oxidation rate, property of mineral surface oxidised material and pulp electrochemical flotation tests. The results showed that although pyrite and arsenopyrite possessed similar thermodynamic stability, significant differences of two minerals were observed in natural oxidation rate, property of surface oxidised material and its influence to dixanthogen formation on the oxidised mineral surface. Based on the non-thermodynamic differences, the pulp electrochemical flotation technology was successfully used to separate arsenopyrite from pyrite in pilot test.

This session comprises six papers: One paper is specifically on advances in drilling techniques, a paper presents a classification for water inrush rich with corresponding guidelines for protection, two papers are concerned with mining impacts in integrated catchment management - one from the quality viewpoint and the other from the quality viewpoint, and the final two papers are case studies of mine dewatering - one for an underground mine threatened by a karst limestone aquifer and the other of an open-cut mine threatened by interbedded sand aquifers. The paper entitled, Practical mine dewatering by means of surface drilled wells by Sides is innovative in presenting the case for wells as cost effective and appropriate for a number of purposes including exploration, re-opening old mines, dewatering, grout emplacement and monitoring.
