Metropolitan Colliery has some areas of roof where immedi- ate support is required in development. The disadvantages of percussive roof bolting at the face have led to recent produc- tion trials with rotary boring and rapid=setting resin anchored roof bolts developed at the Colliery. The three innovations involved are: (1) the wet drilling of small holes with an all- hydraulic, portable rotary boring machine; (2) the rapidity of loading a "point anchored" resin bolt; and (3) the consistently high anchorage strength available. All three innovations provide striking advantages over the previously available alternatives. The greatest disad- vantage - that of cost of resin - is not prohibitive, and there is promise of improvement in the future. There are possibilities of variations of the techniques for special support problems in particularly difficult roofs.

High-chromium vanadium-titanium magnetite has not been exploited and made full use of on a large scale so far due to the immature utilisation technology and the reality that the utilisation efficiency of valuable metals still urgently needs to be improved. In the present paper, the isothermal reduction kinetics and mechanism of high-chromium vanadium-titanium pellets were studied at 800–1100°C. The mineral composition transformation of pellets before and after reduction was analysed by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) to reveal the elemental distributions. The effect of reduction temperature on the volumetric swelling degree and cold crushing strength was also studied. It was found that reduction temperature has a large effect on the reduction rate of pellets, and the increase in reduction rate is more obvious in the range 1000–1100°C than 800–1000°C. The volumetric swelling degree of pellets increased with increasing reduction temperature, while the cold crushing strength decreased. The transformation of mineral species can be expressed as Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe, Fe2O3·3TiO2 ? Fe3O4· (2FeO·TiO2 ) ? 2FeO· TiO2 ? FeO·TiO2, (Fe0.6Cr0.4)2O3 ? FeO· Cr2O3 ? Cr2O3 , and Fe2O3· VO/V2O3 ? VO. The apparent activation energy of the reduction reaction was calculated to be 44.3 kJ/mol, and the reduction rate is controlled by the combined effect of interfacial chemical reaction and gas diffusion through the porous product layer. The rate controlling steps were further studied by calculating the resistance percentages. In 2021, BHP and Metso examined processing of high-MgO nickel sulfide concentrates using Metso’s Ausmelt Top-Submerged-Lance (TSL) technology. Test work was conducted in Metso’s pilot test work facility in Dandenong, Australia to explore operability of the SiO2-FeO-MgO-CaO-NiO slag system across a wide range of compositions, temperatures and bath oxygen potentials. Pilot-scale testing aimed to define slag ‘operability limits’, representing the lowest bath temperature at which stable process and equipment operation could be maintained. This work was supported by FactSage™, version 8.2 (by Thermfact/CRCT and GTT-Technologies) thermodynamic modelling, slag viscosity measurements, physical characterisation of quenched slag samples performed by the University of Queensland and benchmarking of commercial-scale TSL nickel smelting operations. A wide range of slag compositions were examined, with Fe/SiO2 ratios varying from 0.4–1.1, CaO content from 0.8–7.0 wt per cent and MgO content from 6–19 wt per cent. Slag SiO2/MgO ratio, wt per cent CaO and matte grade were found to have the greatest impacts on identified operability limits. Operability limits were found to be influenced by both the solids content in slag and viscosity of the remaining liquid slag phase, with the relative contribution of these parameters heavily influenced by the slag composition. In the majority of trials, limits were defined by a theoretical solids content of 40–50 per cent, however in trials with a low Fe/SiO2 ratio and/or low wt per cent CaO, limits were characterised by a much lower solids content due to the increased effect of the liquid slag viscosity in determining the behaviour of these slags. The test work highlighted inherent flexibility of the Ausmelt TSL process to operate across a wide slag range of slag compositions and recover from process disturbances without an interruption to feeding. The trials also demonstrated the possibility for Ausmelt TSL technology to process concentrates with an Fe/MgO ratio as low as 1.4, which has important implications to the commercial-scale processing of high MgO feeds. Arsenic rejection across the trials was very good, with only 30 per cent of arsenic in the feed inputs reporting to the matte phase. Such high levels of arsenic removal provide the Ausmelt TSL process with a notable advantage over alternative smelting technologies.

Australia's mineral resources boom in the two decades up to 1980 saw the establishment of about 25 new mining towns across the continent Quality housing and a high standard of community services were incorporated to attract a labour force for the major mine or mines i eing serviced. Town construction costs were high and were principally born by the private enterprise mine developer. There has been a change in the pattern in recent years and over 20 new mine developers have adopted a fly-in fly-out arrangement rather than construct new towns. Employees are drawn from a home base which is typically a large city, coastal community or established mining town and flown to the mine site for intensive work periods of about two weeks. The change has occurred for many reasons. Mining companies have been unwilling to support the high construction costs of towns, short life and smallermining operations do not justify a town, fast jet aircraft are available and there is a better perceived family lifestyle in established (coastal) communities. On the other hand reduced permanent development at new mine sites does not assist Australia's perceived need for decentralization. There have been questions as to the social problems which may develop from the artificial separation of the "breadwinner" from his family. The paper reviews a recent survey of the attitude of Australian mining companies employees, governments and unions to fly-in fly-out arrange- ments. The support for this approach is analysed and conclusions drawn that the concept is likely to be with the Australian mining industry for some time in the future.

This paper presents a quantitative assessment model for the assessment of environmental load in gold production, which is based on environmental ecology, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and artificial neural network. In LCA evaluation indexes include resource consumption, energy consumption, gas waste, liquid waste, solid waste and so on. Each item represents an aspect in gold production while their combination reflects the relationship between gold production and environment. In this paper an utility function of evolution index on environmental load is given by linear or non-linear transformation, which changes evaluation indexes with different dimension into an equivalent value in range of [-1, 1]. This paper also provides a new approach to make decision on the weight for quantitative assessment with the help of a three-layered artificial neural network. The proposed approach in this paper has been successfully used to a real synthetic assessment for the environmental load in gold production, which include seven kinds of different operational technologies in China. The applications prove that the new approach is successful and reliable. It provides a new tool for the assessment of environmental load of the gold production.

This paper summarises research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. A review of the froth flotation operation background and the relevance and role of the froth phase are presented. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns from industrial flotation froths is discussed. First, the froth was analysed by the use of the multivariate image analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The partial least squares (PLS) method was applied to develop an empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using an industrial case study. Second, the froth was also analysed by grey-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and wavelet transform analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths. They also provide qualitative information on the changes in the visual appearance of the froth. The pros and the cons of those methods are highlighted. Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses the reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained from the implemented control strategy are highlighted. Finally, the feasibility of implementing a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.

Gas and coal dust, as potential harmful elements (PHEs) produced during mining, are considered two serious threats to the safe mining and the health of miners because of its explosive and pathogenic properties. To solve this problem, compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology was used to control the gas and coal dust in excavation working face in this study, and spray testing platform and wind tunnel were used to investigated the suppression effect for gas and coal dust. In addition, sink test, and agglomeration experiments were also used to analyse its suppression mechanism. Testing results show that the dust reduction efficiencies of compound reagents enhanced water spraying technology for four different particle sizes were 80 per cent, 91.43 per cent, 94.74 per cent and 94.46 per cent, and improved by 14 per cent, 10.86 per cent, 8.42 per cent and 4.25 per cent compared to water spraying. Moreover, the gas suppression efficiency also can be increased more than 20 per cent. Sink test, and agglomeration experiments results show that compound reagent improves the spreading efficiency of the liquid on the surface of the coal by changing its wettability, and this process can not only slow down the desorption rate of gas by forming a water-sealing effect in the coal surface indicated, but also promote the agglomeration of fine-grained coal dust.

The exploration industry generally has a low opinion of the quality of the service supplied to it by government departments. In particular, the academic research-related emphasis of the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) and the relatively low level of explora- tion assistance offered by several Mines Departments are of concern. In a number of areas of geoscience research, the industry perceives a mixup of priorities and a lack of understanding on the part of governments as to its needs. While government's sights are, and should be, set on the future needs of the community at large, the industry doubts that government budget allocations to the BMR and Mines Departments are either large enough or being cost-effectively spent. This is certainly the case for such areas as exploration assist- ance, provision of basic exploration data, and applied geoscientific research. On balance, the exploration industry's perceptions are misguided in a number of respects because of a lack of communication with government. However, this reinforces the need for changes in the manner in which govern- ment departments communicate with industry and, in particular, the criteria upon which research priorities are based. At a time of contracting oil and mineral exploration expenditure, and near-record levels of geoscientist unemployment, the government's role is critical and should be open to question.

There is growing interest in the mining industry on the application of ore sorting. While many are familiar with particle sorting, including the limitations that technology presents (e.g. throughput), bulk sorting, with its higher throughput potential, is less understood. Despite the potential to sort at higher throughputs, few operations have adopted bulk sorting processes, certainly not at large scale. It is suggested that the inability to reliably predict outcomes from bulk sorting may be limiting its adoption in mining projects. Consequently, an evaluation approach for bulk ore sorting has been developed such that mass pulls and grade upgrades can be predicted in the context of a mining study. The approach allows for evaluation of drill core assays and application of the consequently derived heterogeneity relationships to the block model for estimation of sorting outcomes. These processes were applied to conveyor-based bulk sorting for the CuMo project in Idaho, USA and are described in this paper.

Fleet management systems have been adopted by many open pit mines throughout the world and the resulting improvement in truck cycle times has been one of the most significant contributors to mine efficiency. Ongoing enhancements to fleet management systems such as interfaces for vital signs monitoring have given incremental efficiency gains. Each incremental improvement is another step towards a grand vision of a totally automated mine. A relatively new fleet management system is being integrated with two other technologies to provide a highly reliable platform for a networked information system which monitors mine machinery and production. The paper reviews the integration project, the features of the new mine site information network platform and the contribution to productivity and safety. The new fleet management system has a predictive truck dispatch algorithm. It also has a distributed database that replicates rapidly so that each machine in the fleet has an identical database, thereby making each machine aware of other machinesÆ locations on the site. High precision systems for navigating and monitoring machinery such as drills, dozers, draglines and shovels provide individual machine operators with cockpit style real-time information to increase their operational efficiency. The integration of the new fleet management systems capabilities with the high precision systems that provide production information, machine vital signs data and operator information means that the mine operations and maintenance managers have real-time access to the whole mine siteÆs production data. Such a mine monitoring and reporting system is dependent on reliable wireless communications and reliable positions. Positions in fleet management and high precision systems for open pit mines are usually provided by global positioning system (GPS). Other global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) such as Glonass, and in the future Galileo, will provide additional satellite cover; however, some parts of open pit mines do not have enough sky visibility for reliable GNSS positioning and so a new centimetre level wireless positioning system called Locata is being integrated with the fleet and high precision systems to augment and backup the GNSS positions. The final integrated system will provide the highest levels of reliable position-based information to all stakeholders in a mineÆs operation, ensuring gains in productivity and safety.

"Flotation of nickel sulfide ores are generally constrained by nickel grade and impurity concentrations (notably magnesium and arsenic) in the product delivered to smelters. Being a physical separation process, flotation recoveries and grades are limited by the grade recovery curve of a particular operation, where increasing product grades are invariably associated with lower recoveries. Impurities put further pressure on this relationship, as removal of impurities from the final concentrate is almost always associated with nickel losses.Western Areas Ltd are developing a proposed expansion to its Cosmic Boy concentrator to treat an impurity stream, that is high in nickel and would otherwise report to tails. Through the use of BioHeap® technology Western Areas aims to recover the nickel and discard the arsenic to tailings. This expansion will consist of a biohydrometallurgical plant that leaches the nickel arsenic minerals, removing the arsenic as a stable iron/arsenic hydroxide, while recovering the nickel as a high-grade nickel sulfide product (at approximately 50 per cent nickel). This can then be blended with final concentrate to improve nickel grades and recoveries, while simultaneously reducing impurity levels or used to produce high value products like nickel sulfate.The introduction of a small microbial leach plant may be beneficial to base metal concentrators constrained by impurities or grade.Citation:Fewings, J, Seet, S, McCredden, T and Fitzmaurice, C, 2016. In current mining practices it is desirable to bring about a substantial increase in both rate of face advance and productivity, thus compelling the mine engineer to consider better and more productive ways of mining. Transportation plays a vital role in achieving improved productivity. This paper focuses on horizontal transportation systems. Horizontal transportation is defined from the shaft station area to the end of the stope cross-cut. Traditionally, horizontal transportation is inefficient in comparison to vertical transportation efficiencies and accounts for a high proportion of South African mine accidents. Thus, the role of horizontal transportation has been investigated in detail, as it offers the greatest chance for improvement. The purpose of the paper is to provide a best practice guideline for the design of horizontal underground transport systems. It is intended that the document be used by mine designers and planners as an aide memoir during the design process and benefit may well be gained from retrofit and reorganisation activity. The paper looks at transport systems suitable for deep level gold mining in South Africa and evaluates such items as management, scheduling, and haulage systems. Current transportation systems for personnel, material and rock transportation are evaluated, gaps in technology highlighted, and recommendations made.

Chemical anchors for use in rock bolting have been produced in Australia under licence for several years. These anchors are alternatives to the more normally used mechanical anchors and give improved anchorage strengths under some conditions, although at greater cost. Considerable development during this time has resulted in an improved sausage-type chemical anchor more competitive in price, to such an extent that its use is increasing markedly. Particular-improvements allow load application up to the strength of the bolt within 2 min, reduction in cost, self-extinguishing features in the resin, improvements in manufacturing techniques, and an improved water- insensitive casing. At the same time, smaller bolt sizes have allowed reduction in resin volumes with consequent cost reduction. At this stage several aspects remain to be improved, particularly specialty anchors for specific purposes and Packaging.

A continuing demand for exploration geologists, at a level well below that during the mineral "boom" of 1967-1971, will be highly selective. The exploration geologist must be more than the traditional geologist whose primary function has been detailed description of rocks and their recording on a geological map. He must be capable of 1. reconnaissance recognition of favour= able environments for ore mineral concentrations, 2. application and interpretation of techniques of search and evaluation, and 3. evaluation of economic, technological and political interactions that combine to make an ore deposit. Universities have an obligation to their students to provide them with a saleable skill, to educate them so that they can cope profess- ionally and socially, and to provide a mechan- ism by which education can be a continuing process. Humanistic and social studies, develop ment of communication skills, understanding of economic and management principles, ability to assess rock properties that influence extract- ion and beneficiation, and a knowledge of technological developments and limitations are necessary parts of the exploration geologist's

Infrastructure is defined as all those parts of a mining development which are not directly concerned with mining and mineral processing. Infrastructure is of significant and growing importance in the overall develop- ment of mines, and the costs could be critical in determining the viability of a project. Prior to_project authorisation, feasibility studies are required, often in considerable detail, to determine costs with adequate reliability. It is necessary that the Engineer should be adequately briefed for carrying out these studies and that good liaison and communication with the Owner be maintained. Methods, costs, order of accuracy, and some special requirements of these studies are discussed. After project authorisation, rapid im- plementation of the proposals is generally desired. A suggested organisation and method for this implementation is presented and dis- cussed. Comments on fees, and particular points in the relationship between Owner and Consulting Engineer are given. Particular reference is made to differences in conditions compared with public works projects. Realistic attitudes of mind towards environmental matters, industrial relations, and contractual relationships are advocated.

This paper describes the current and finished design work which has been performed for shallow rock station caverns for New York CityÆs first new subway construction in 60 years. A new robust, sophisticated, design procedure has been developed for two up to 30 m wide caverns, with overburden of less then 12 m, and rock cover to span ratios (C/S) in the order of 0.25. The design is based on empirical input parameters like the Q-value, rock mass rating (RMR) values, rock mass class after Cording (1984), cover to span ratios, which have been validated by the use of structural computer models as well as two- and three-dimensional numerical discontinuum models. The design approach is a staged approach using first principles, empirical models and non-linear FEM and DEM models. In addition, the paper describes the factors and circumstances why shallow caverns have been selected instead of cut-and-cover structures and why all the underground station structures have been developed as drained structures.

FOR some time it has been recognised by the Metallurgical Staff that the presence of pyrite in the ore was adversely affecting the grades of the flotation concentrates.Following experimental work, it was decided to change over from the acid circuit in the mill to an alkaline circuit. The following description sets out the procedure adopted, -and the results obtained when such change-over was made.The Zinc Corporation ore consists mainly of galena, marmatite, calcite, and quartz, with smaller quantities of pyrite, fluorspar, and rhodonite.A clean specimen of marmatite picked from the ore assayed 53.4% zinc, and 10% iron, with no lead or insoluble. However, as zinc concentrates have been, at times, produced in the plant assaying over 53% zinc, and with only 8.7% iron, apparently the picked specimen of marmatite did not represent an average composition.The average would probltbly be between 8 and 9% of iron, and from 53.5 to 54.5% of zinc. It is obvious, therefore, that from this ore it is not possible to produce zinc concentrate of a higher grade than this average figure.In the Colorado School of Mines Quarterly for April, 1928, Vol. 23, No. 2, on page 47, we find the following statement:As the zinc in the ore exists as marmatite, which contains approximately 54.5% zinc and 10% iron, 49% zinc in the concentrate may be considered high.This statement refers to the ore treated in the Sullivan concentrator, owned by the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited.

The reality is that in today's world almost half of nearly six billion people on the planet do not have access to commercial energy and the services it brings. Based on UN projections, in 30 years time there are likely to be nearly three billion more people in the world, over 90 per cent of them in countries which are already economically poor. The World Energy Council (WEC), through its 102 member countries, monitors trends and developments and projects future trends. WEC is a non-governmental international body representing all forms of energy and is committed to the sustainable use of energy for all mankind. This paper is based on WEC studies and papers presented at its many conferences and congresses worldwide. Primary energy demand growth is dominated by the developing countries over the next 30 years. The world energy mix is projected to change very little over the next 30 years. Fossil fuel supplies (ie coal, oil and gas) are likely to decline from 77 per cent to 73 per cent, nuclear energy may grow from five per cent to six per cent and renewable energy sources (eg hydro, solar, geothermal, wind, tidal and biomass) could increase from 18 per cent to 21 per cent. World energy consumption is expected to grow by over 50 per cent over the next 30 years. The paper reviews changes in energy demand in the world, particularly in the Asia/Pacific region. Environmental issues are covered, as are developments such as solar energy from space and the status of renewable energy forms. Agendas for action to achieve change are also reviewed.
