Stress measurement is at the core of most stability design analyses. It is demonstrated that contrary to accepted practice, it is the field measurement, and not the calculated prediction, of stress that requires most examination and review. Since it is not really possible to quantify rockmass properties, the stiffness values used in reduction of stress measurements and in subsequent design analyses (either empirical or numerical modelling) must consider an appropriate range of values.

Trials of different tapping operations at Olympic Dam have been carried out with the aim of improving the safety of tapping and improving the integrity and lifetime of the taphole. This has involved trialling the use of a mudgun and drill on one of the tapholes of the electric furnace in place of the normal manual tapping procedures. The blister copper tapholes are currently closed using a conical clay plug formed around a steel bar. The plug is pushed into the taphole by hand to stop the flow, and the cooling on the outer part of the taphole freezes the blister copper in the tapping channel. The hole is burnt open using consumable oxygen lances. This puts the furnace technicians in close proximity to molten metal and heat û which is reflected in the safety incidents reported by these operators. By moving to a mudgun and drill operation, the furnace technicians will be moved away from the taphole area improving their safety. Additional benefits include: improved tapping cycles; extended taphole refractory lifecycles; and improved furnace integrity around the taphole, hopefully extending the campaign. This paper outlines the trials that have shown that it is possible to plug and drill blister copper (not matte) tapholes using a mudgun and drill.

The industrial practice of separating finely' around valuable minerals from associ- ated gangue materials by froth flotation is well known. Despite the obvious importance of this industrial process, the predictive tools for plant engineering evaluation of flotation process variable changes are still in a developmental stage. Consider, for example, the situation where an operating engineer is faced with evaluating a change in an existing chemical reagent scheme, possibly based on batch laboratory data. When all is said and done, the engineer must still perform detailed physical testing of the proposed reagent change on the actual equipment in plant use to be confident even of the direc- tion of change of plant results, let alone the economic viability of the change. The theory behind chemical reagent behaviour in froth flotation has been studied extensively, e.g., (Aplan {1980}, Fuerstenau {1976}, Fuerstenau {1962}, and Somasundaran {1980}), and, certainly, important progress has been made. Unfortunately, the nature of the flotation process, with its complicated heterogeneous surface chemisty activity operating on highly variable and difficut to characterize ore surfaces, coupled with com- plex mass and momentum transfer phenomena, :;l riously compromises the plant scale predictive capability of theoretically based models.

A common problem faced by underground mining operations around the world is airborne dust sourced from production and auxiliary processes. In most underground mining methods, air is generally directed through a limited number of drives and is thus more effective at carrying dust away from operational areas quickly. In a block caving operation, there are a number of ways to set up ventilation systems. In its simplest form the air is entering the extraction level through access drives and then split over the number of extraction drives—based on the pressure differences—without being regulated. This is the case at Northparkes Mines. Larger operations and panel caves most often utilise designated ventilation levels and ventilation raises with some form of regulation to ensure adequate airflow to all work areas.Northparkes Mines utilise electric loaders as a productive means to transport ore to the run-of-mine (ROM) bin, which have the added advantage of allowing the mine to require less airflow through the extraction drives as dilution of exhaust gases is no longer required. Dust was controlled during the operational period of the previous two block caves by using water spray bars in each of the drawpoints, which were seen as the main source of dust. These drawpoint spray bars only wet the surface of muck piles and require a lot of water to achieve an effect on the overall air quality. The drawpoint sprays can be remotely operated from mine control, whenever a loader is sent to bog a particular drawpoint. A significant amount of airborne dust is also generated during loading as rilling of material occurs, with further dust being generated during tramming and dumping activities as only limited mixing of the water and ore occurs. The water sprays are ineffective at precipitating dust that has already become airborne.When built, the currently operational E48 cave was fitted with drawpoint water sprays. As the cave is in a different orebody with higher silica content, the water sprays were not able to keep airborne dust and thus silica quantities under control efficiently. It was therefore necessary to find more sustainable solutions. The problem was further intensified by the concurrent load-haul-dump (LHD) processes across multiple extraction drives and tipping points, as well as secondary breaking, using non-explosive blasting and development activities occurring nearby.This paper describes the practical approach taken at Northparkes Mines to reduce personal dust exposure on the E48 extraction level. As the extraction level is one of the main contributors to airborne dust at the mine, it is believed that much can be learnt by focusing improvement efforts initially on this part of the mining process and later applying the effective solutions in other parts of the mine.CITATION:Vejrazka, C and Wyllie, A, 2014. The rocks of the Serranias Chilla massif of Bolivia are a suite of metamorphosed Palaeozoic basalts and associated continental sediments. Whole-rock trace element geochemistry of the basalts suggest a calc-alkaline affinity and indicate that subduction extended as far north as the Bolivian Altiplano during lower Palaeozoic time.

Obtaining correct assays for gold determinations relies on the correct methods being chosen and the assayer being made aware of the mineralogy of the sample and its general origin. Usually when a geologist or metallurgist obtains "incorrect" gold assays the problem can be traced to poor communication between the geologist or metallurgist and the assayer.

After eighteen months of discussions with employees and their trade unions, multiskilling was introduced at the Hellyer concentrator in early 1989, coinciding with the plant commissioning. Multiskilling was introduced with the Hellyer Skills Acquisition Program together with intensive training and performance assessment. Design innovations have helped to improve productivity. There have been some difficult times with personnel tending to return to the old and traditional ways of operating. In general, these have been overcome to ensure the success of multiskilling at Hellyer. The main factors making multiskilling effective have been continual training and assessment, and a competent team of shift supervisors. This has improved work standards towards the high level expected from a multiskilled approach without compromising safety standards.

Prior to exploitation, the feasibility of mining and recovering ore can usually be determined to a satisfactory level of uncertainty by the consideration of conceptual scenarios, using a range of reasonable parameter values. Such values are selected on experience, knowledge of other mining operations, and the characteristics of the particular deposit being considered. Having established such feasibility, it is usually considerably more demanding to determine what the optimum set of parameters might be. Yet many decisions taken at the feasibility stage represent commitments extending at least into the medium term.

X-ray diffraction and differential thermal methodshave been used to determine the mineralogy of some clays used by the heavy clay industry in the Adelaide area. A detailed analysis has been made of the mineralogy and. particle size distribution of eighteen samples from beds' in two pits in~the Recent seaiinents in the Adelaide plains, of six white clays.: developed from the weathering of the Adelaide series of `sediments and, of ,four -Recent alluvial clays from a pit in the Mount Lofty ranges south of Adelaide. Structural clay products 'in the Adelaide area are manufactured from mixtures of these clays:, so the mineralogy and particle size distribution have been determined of eighteen clay mixtures used to make red bricks, cream bricks,. facing bricks, pipes and tiles. Knowledge of this mineralogy is important in understanding the ceramic behaviour of the clays.

Compositional and isotopic analyses of coal seam gases in the Southern Coalfields have shown that these gases frequently contain abnormally high concentrations of magmatically derived carbon dioxide. The size of this carbon dioxide reservoir and the extent of permeation of the sediments by carbon dioxide are not known.Therefore caution in evaluating the natural gas potential of the region is advised.

Since its commercial in Australia at Broken Hill in the early part of the 20th century, the flotation process has grown to become the single most important minerals separation method available to mineral processing engineers. Statistics on flotation are impressive both in terms of growth of tonnages treated and in terms of the variety of separations accomplished. Because of the steady decline in the grade of ores and because many of the ores remaining are finely disseminated mixtures of minerals (many of them in a highly oxidized state) mineral processing scientists and engineers are now con- fronted with the problem of improving and modifying conventional flotation techniques so as to be able to effic- iently process these more refractory types of-ores. The flotation process did not come into being as the result of an intensive fundamental research effort but, in a similar way to so many other methods used in the processing of raw materials, it was developed over the years by the continued application of empirical methods. As a result, most of the basic research in this field has long been concerned with the problem of explaining why the existing process works so well. We are now at the stage where any further substan- tial extension of the flotation process will demand a more profound understanding of its fundamental principles. The Harima works were established in 1964 and started operation in 1966. The initial capacity was 3500 t/month of zinc and 1500 t/month of lead. Until 1990 a lot of improvements had been made and the capacity had increased 6600 t/month of zinc and 2200 t/month of lead without enlarging the furnace size. During the ten weeks campaign shut-down at the end of 1990, many modifications were carried out including the enlargement of the furnace shaft area. By these changes, the capacity has gone up to 7500 t/month of zinc and 2500 t/month of lead. In the sinter plant, the amount of SO2 rich gas supplied to the acid plant was raised to 50 000 Nm3/h from 43 500 Nm3/h. An electrostatic precipitator was adopted instead of a venturi scrubber to clean the rich gas. Oxygen enrichment has been continuously operated since August 1991, because the furnace capacity is more than the rate of sinter production. Utilisation of the sinter plant is high being as much as 97 per cent and the sulphur burning rate has been increased. In 1990 the furnace was replaced except the hearth. The shaft area was enlarged to 19.4 m2 from 15.3 m2. The target blast was designed to be more than 36 000 Nm3/h. Tuyere layout was changed to prevent slag breakouts. Due to these modifications shaft condition has been very good. Automatic launder jacket cleaners were installed to increase the lead cooling efficiency. Many other improvements and developments were also made. Coke powder injection from the tuyeres has been successfully operated since April 1987.

The Browns Creek deposit is located 8 kin west of Blayney and 220 km west of Sydney (Figure 1), at lat 33¦32'S, long 149¦10'E on the Bathurst (SI 55-8) 1:250 000 scale map sheet. The total measured, indicated and inferred resource at 30 June 1997 was 1.29 Mt at 6.39 g/t gold and 0.45 per cent copper. During the 1996 - 97 year 263 557 t of ore at 6.30 g/t gold and 0.48 per cent copper was treated, to produce 47 496 oz of gold, and 1 169 t of contained copper in concentrate. As the result of an increase in the resources and reserves, because of underground exploration drilling and accelerated mine development, 1997 production at Browns Creek is predicted to expand from 240 000 to 390 000 tpa, to yield more than 70 000 oz of gold per year.

The great variety of geological conditions in French coal deposits has obliged the industry to develop different thick seam mining methods. In very steep seams in a dense deposit where stowing is necessary to avoid spontaneous combustion, surface subsidence and water problems, a rising horizontal slice method is used, the coal being hard enough and the seams regular (Lorraine). In very thick and irregular steep seams where the stowing is not necessary, a sub-level horizontal slicing is used; a third method has to be used in Dauphine.

Cu-Au porphyry deposits are large tonnage low-grade resources dependent on processing large volumes of material. The ability to understand and predict comminution performance is critical, as it is frequently the rate-limiting step during processing. Parameters required from geometallurgical mapping and modelling of comminution performance are: A×b processing domains based on impact breakage variability, and BMWi processing domains showing grind response variability which lead to Mine throughput domains for a specific comminution circuit configuration. Due to the cost and/or large sample requirements of traditional comminution tests, insufficient data density and distribution of comminution indices commonly exist, making it difficult to model and map deposit scale variability. One method routinely applied to three dimensional domaining is to have an a priori zoning based on geological features (lithology, alteration, mineralogy, textures), and then apply to all material within a given domain the metallurgical values measured on a single sample or average of samples from that domain. The problem with this approach is that commonly the geological domains do not reflect comminution response, therefore compromising the quality of the average domain estimate. To resolve this problem an alternate integrated geometallurgical mapping and modelling method is applied to model and map comminution performance at Cadia East. This paper uses a data set of ~32 000 assay measurements and geological logging information, integrated with ~150 comminution measurements to analyse and develop proxy support models for comminution indices (ie A×b, BMWi, and throughput) based on inherent geological variability. Discrete downhole comminution processing domains are created, mapping orebody response while maintaining inherent variability.

A pyritic gold concentrate from the Golden Mile, Kalgoorlie, was roasted over a range of temperatures in a pilot scale fluid bed reactor. The calcines were subsequently cyanide leached. Mineralogical studies of the con- centrate, calcines and leached residues were also undertaken. Calcines produced at 500'C gave the poorest gold extractions and high cyanide consumptions. Gold recoveries of approximately 90 per cent were obtained from calcines produced at 550-600'C but higher roasting tempera- tures resulted in an increase in the residual gold content of the leached calcine. There is some evidence of flash smelting of the pyrite at the higher roasting temperatures and encapsulation of gold particles. Mineralogical examination of the calcines shows that the mechanism of oxidation is temperature dependent. At 500'C pyrite is directly oxidized to hematite with a concentric layered texture which appears to inhibit lixiviant access to enclosed gold particles. At higher temperatures the conversion sequence pyrite-pyrrhotite-hematite produces a spongy calcine which al- lows easier penetration by the leaching medium.

The Mt Muro gold and silver deposit in Central Kalimantan has been in production since December 1994. The geology is characterised by narrow high-grade lodes containing gold and significant amounts of silver. From a largely untrained workforce in the grade control department, production per crew and per geologist has tripled during the three years of production. Grade control drilling evolved from blast hole sampling to reverse circulation sampling. National geologists are trained in basic modeling procedures. A fully integrated reporting and reconciliation system was programed and implemented.

Ballarat Goldfields NL is developing an exploration decline at Ballarat East using a Mitsui Miike S-125 roadheader. To-date, 530 in of advance has been achieved at an average rate of 16.1 m/week. Roadheader availability has averaged 94.3 per cent, and pick consumption has averaged 0.016 per m. Ground support has involved pattern rockbolting with split sets, 100 mm thick fibre reinforced shotcrete, and steel sets as required. The slower than expected advance rate has mainly been due to difficult ground conditions. It is expected that a further 970 in of decline will be mechanically excavated before a drill and blast system becomes more economical.

Good roads are essential in moving men and materials to and from the underground workplace. Coffey Partners International Pty Ltd (Coffey) has recently completed a underground coal industry funded project on underground mine road construction and maintenance. This paper discusses practical approaches to construction and maintenance of underground mine roads using transferrable civil technologies and innovative techniques. Mine pavements are generally low-cost (relative to civil roads), constructed to varying standards using locally available materials to best meet the mobility needs of the mine. Performance of pavements is thus largely dependent on the environmental conditions, quality of the available road making materials, maintenance policies and available resources. The paper will detail `what causes bad roads?' in various underground environments, available management strategies, construction and water control techniques, road maintenance and vehicle considerations.

Several mineral resources have been recognised to alkaline igneous rocks. In general, these mineralisations present low P grades, so a complex concentration process is required to achieve commercial grade concentrates. This process is guided not only by the ore characteristics, such as apatite grain size and liberation degree, gangue minerals and slimes content, but also by different apatite varieties, iron oxi-hydroxide surface coating and roughness. The main techniques applied to apatite and phosphate ore characterisation, such as optical microscopy, cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), surface techniques and magnetic separation are discussed, aiming to evaluate distinct apatite varieties and their technological behaviour.
