Underground mine ventilation is now com monly simulated on a digital computer. Such a programme, incorporating natural ventilation has been modified by others to account for methane emission and elevated local tempera- tures. At Wollongong University, the pro- gramme was further developed and extensive interactive graphics incorporated such that any view of the three dimensional mine could be viewed, and superimposed upon that view are areas where a nominated parameter has exceeded a particular value - generally at a nominated time after a particular event and usually a fire/explosion of one type or another. A further programme was developed such that up to 20 'times' could be examined at a particu- lar location after say, a fuel rich fire at some other place in the mine. The output from this programme includes a plot of methane 1, smoke 1, temperature, pressure and air flow versus time - a most useful graphic to observe the limits of safe attendance in a particular Airway.

In the ten years since the University of NSW proposed a pillar design methodology for bord and pillar operations, the Australian coal mining industry has changed substantially. What was primarily a bord and pillar design approach is now being applied to chain pillar design in longwall mines where the requirements are substantially different. The dimensions of chain pillars can impact on tailgate conditions (roof, rib and floor), seal performance, and surface subsidence. The status of chain pillar design practice in Australia is reviewed, with a focus on defining pillar strength, chain pillar loading, and assessing the performance of the roof/pillar/system. A new pillar strength equation is proposed for Australian coal that applies for all width/height ratios. An alternative analysis of probability of failure of chain pillars is presented.

JUST prior to the war the Broken Hill South Ltd: raised, on the average, 6628 tons of ore per week, all of which was crushed and treated in the 4-section gravity mill and the slime flotation plant, for the recovery of lead concentrate carrying silver. The sandy residues from that treatment were railed to the treatment plant of the Amalgamated Zinc (De Bavay's) Ltd. for the recovery of zinc concentrate by flotation, on the joint account of both companies. Subsequent to that-since 1916-approximately 1000 tons of old dump slime were also treated weekly for the recovery of lead and silver as slime-lead concentrate.PLANT CAPACITYUnder this programme the Babcock and Wilcox boiler plant of 8 boilers was taxed to such an extent as to call for the installation of two additional boilers, each of 2690 sq. ft. of heating surface and 55 sq. ft. chain-grade area.The electric generators and the air compressors of the old powerplant were also loaded to their maximum capacity. In view of the fact that the old power-plant had been added to from time to time since 1901, and that further extension was notpossible, and as it was not, moreover, an economical arrangement, the whole question of power generation was reconsidered. The deep seafloor in Papua New Guinea's proposed Exclusive Economic Zone appears to be a gold-rich province in the same sense as the territory above sea level. Two significant sites with polymetallic massive sulphide deposits forming today are known on neovolcanic ridges in the Manus Basin. Their high precious metal contents have led to renewed interest in the issue of exploiting seafloor mineral deposits. The prospects of finding other, possibly larger deposits in the region appear substantial. This paper reviews current data on seafloor deposits in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and raises some issues relating to future commercial exploration and mining of the sea floor. One of the known PNG deposits could become a prime candidate for the trials needed to develop technology, establish costs, and minimise environmental impact.

The tankhouse of the electrolytic zinc plant at Nordenham is operating with a very high operating efficiency of 99 per cent. This has been achieved not only by strict control of the quality of the zinc sulphate cell feed solution but also by all the improvements in housekeeping in the tankhouse developed during the past years: aluminium cathode specification, cathode stripping cycle, edge strips, copper contacts, anode isolators, cell cleaning, fittings and washing devices. During 1987 to 1992 the casting department was completely remodelled in order to improve the quality of the zinc products, the safety of the operations and the flexibility. The remodelling includes the enlargement of the area for the casting shop, the storage buildings and the five casting lines on the same ground level. New lines for alloying products and for SHG25 kg zinc ingots have been constructed. The line for galvanising products has new equipment in some parts and the other lines have been modified.

Like many industries the coal mining industry has, since the beginning of this century, undergone many changes. Technological advances and the increasing demand for fossil fuels have introduced new mining methods and techniques which allow the extraction of thicker and deeper coal seams at higher rates of production. Most new methods of mining (or for that matter any other processes) introduce problems which the engineers of the industry are expected to face and resolve. Unfortunately, spontaneous combustion has plagued the coal mining industry since the first attempts to mine coal, and is no doubt partly responsible for the reputation that coal mining is a hazardous industry. The financial loss and toll of human lives due to the occurrence of spontaneous combustion of coal in coal mines is enormous, if not incalculable. Its occurrence today is less likely to claim lives, due to both improved methods of working and in the detection of spontaneous combustion sites.

The possible use of combined (flotation/magnetic separation and magnetic separation/flotation) technologies involving the new flotation reagent systems for upgrading the iron ore concentrates, low grade manganese products and beneficiation of graphite-bearing dusts from integrated iron-and-steel works has been shown. It has been found that the absence of magnetic flocculation phenomenon worsens the reverse cationic flotation of oxidised iron ore concentrates and direct flotation of low-grade manganese products which require the use of modifiers possessing the flocculating properties. A new high intensity flotation process 'FASTFLOT' is explained and its theoretical advantages compared with other flotation systems are discussed. The results of initial FASTFLOT testing on the zinc roughing circuit at Pasminco Mining, Broken Hill South concentrator are presented and compared to recent plant data. The comparison suggests that on roughing duties, the FASTFLOT process yields superior concentrate grade while requiring less than one third the residence time of a conventional mechanical cell plant. Strategies for FASTFLOT deployment are also presented.

The authors have previously described a piezoelectric-based system to measure the dynamic pressure during actual detonation in the field. This technique is used in a water hammer test set-up where a donor detonator is fired first, with the pressure sensor and an acceptor electronic detonator placed underwater in a water tank, and maintained at a fixed distance away from the donor detonator. The functioning and timing of the acceptor detonator are captured using a customised microcontroller board called the water hammer timer. Using such water hammer testing, the effect of dynamic pressure was studied as a function of the magnitude of pressure during the electronic timing countdown. Flotation is one of the main concentration processes to purify kaolin clay via the removal of naturally occurring impurity minerals containing Ti and Fe. Currently, there are two types of collector chemistries used in the industry to float coloured impurity minerals. These are traditional tall oil fatty acids (TOFA) and specialty hydroxamate (AHX) based collectors. AHX based collectors have long been known to be the most selective collectors to float Ti and Fe based coloured impurity minerals (CIMs) as compared to TOFA based systems. AHX based collectors provide, not only improved selectivity and simplified process, but also more importantly, make it possible to treat certain kaolin resources that do not respond to standard TOFA systems. However, the relatively higher cost of straight AHX collectors has restricted broader application of these collectors in kaolin clay and other oxide flotation applications for a long time. Recent technological advancements, in both making and formulating AHX products more economically, increased the usage of these collectors in kaolin applications. Modified AHX products offer more economical alternatives and process options to provide high purity kaolin clay products for specialty applications based on cost-performance criteria. In this paper, the flotation performance of a series of newly developed AHX formulations is provided along with the characteristics of AHX flotation in general. In addition, flotation performance of earlier AHX collectors is provided based on published literature as background data.

Comparatively recent Tasmanian legisla tion established a series of rigid control standards for environmental protection just as ma spectacular expansion of the mining industry was nearing completion. Upgrading existing protection to obtain the necessary licence to operate under these new regulations required further major works and involved a considerable outlay of non- productive capital at a time when escalating costs and falling metal prices were straining economic efficiencies to the limit. Late in 1974 a major environmental protection scheme was commissioned by the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited at Rosebery on the West Coast of Tasmania. This 4 million dollar project was specifically developed by the Company ahead of and to meet the new standards for control of total effluents discharged from its zinc-lead -copper-pyrites mine and concentrator.

Over the past decade, the mining industry has come to recognise the importance of water both to itself and to others. Water accounting is a formalisation of this importance that quantifies and communicates how water is used by individual sites and the industry as a whole. While there are a number of different accounting frameworks that could be used within the industry, the Minerals Council of AustraliaÆs (MCA) water accounting framework (WAF) is an industry-led approach that provides a consistent representation of mine site water interactions regardless of their operational, social or environmental context that allows for valid comparisons between sites and companies.The WAF contains definitions of off-site water sources and destinations and on-site water use, a methodology for applying the definitions, and a set of metrics to measure site performance. The WAF is comprised of two models: the input-output model, which represents the interactions between sites and their surrounding community, and the operational model, which represents on-site water interactions.Members of the MCA have recently adopted the WAFÆs input-output model to report on their external water interactions in their Australian operations, with some adopting it on a global basis. To support this adoption, there is a need for companies to better understand how to implement the WAF in their own operations. Developing a water account is non-trivial, particularly for sites unfamiliar with the WAF or for sites with the need to represent unusual features. A new engine family has been developed by Caterpillar Tractor Co. for application in off-highway trucks. This family, the 3500 Series is available in three configurations, covering a 600-1200 kilowatt range. This engine series incorporates the latest in design technology, stringent functional specifications for servicing ease, fuel economy, reliability, optimum performance and parts interchangeability. TECHNICAL INTRODUCTION The 3500 Series Engine has been under development by Caterpillar for over eight years and has undergone extensive testing in the laboratory and in field prototype units. - The engine configuration is a 600 Vee in 8, 12, and 16 cylinder versions. - The intermittent power output per cylinder is 75 kilowatt (100 HP). Net power for off-highway trucks is 600-1200 kilowatt (800-1600 Hp) depending on engine configurations. A mine project combines vast amounts of information from various disciplines including but not limited to geology, mining, metallurgy, technology, environment and economics. In many cases, all relevant information is not fully shared between all disciplines. Thus, project performance (technical, economical and sustainability) may be evaluated on basis of insufficient information resulting in non-optimal decisions, project execution and risk management. Advances in computing power and simulation software enable various data sets to be incorporated in a single digital platform enabling more efficient and transparent data sharing. In addition, linked data sets and simulation can support assessment and optimization of the project as a whole rather than focusing on optimization of individual events. McKinnons open pit gold mine, located within the Cobar Basin in New South Wales, is characterised by complex mineralisation controlled by the intersection of steep faults in the hinge zone of an anticline. Resource estimation using indicator variography and indicator kriging was based on RC drilling on 25 in sections together with grade control RC drilling on 12 in by 12 in and 6 m by 6 in patterns. Rigorous sampling and checking procedures were used to verify the reliability of the drill hole data. Blast hole data was used to assist grade control in defining ore block boundaries.

The problem of recovery of cobalt products from poorly oxidised nickel ores (Kempirsaisk deposit) and pyrite concentrates with a low content of cobalt (Sokolovsk-Sarbaisky deposit) has not been solved to the present time in Kazakstan. The balance reserves of nickel ore of the Kempirsaisky deposit make up more than 35 million tons with a nickel content of 1.13 per cent and cobalt content of 0.05 per cent; besides there are 110 millions tons of out-balance ores (Anon, 1995). In a tailing dump of Sokolovsk-Sarbaisk Mining and Productional Association more than 320 million tons of tailings of wet magnetic separation have accumulated, which contain 7.2 per cent of sulphur, 0.022 per cent of cobalt, 0.012 per cent of nickel, 0.094 per cent of copper, 0.079 per cent of zinc, 16.45 per cent of iron, and from which a high quality pyrite concentrate car) he separated through flotation, containing 48 - 50 per cent of sulphur, 44.15 per cent of iron, 0.141 per cent of cobalt, 0.07 per cent of nickel, and 0.10 per cent of copper. The well-known technological flow charts for cobalt and nickel recovery from the tailings of sulphide-magnetite ores dressing (to give pyrite concentrate) and from oxidised nickel ores, are not profitable at the existing prices for metals, but are not worthless and require significant capital investments for the realisation of their value. The flow chart `sulphate roasting - leaching - solution processing' is used widely for combined processing of cobalt-containing pyrite ores and concentrates.

Tools such as landform evolution models (LEMs) provide a means of predicting how a landform may evolve over extended periods of time. Here, we utilise the CAESAR-Lisflood LEM to assess a proposed rehabilitated landform of the Ranger Uranium Mine in the Northern Territory of Australia (Figure 1). The environmental requirements for the closure of the mine state that the final landform must be able to physically isolate tailings material from the environment for a period of at least 10,000 years (Australian Government, 1999). However, uncertainty exists as to the reliability of model predictions representing thousands of years.In this study, we use model predictions from an undisturbed pre-mine landform to calibrate the parameters used in model simulations of a post-mining rehabilitated landform over a simulated period of 1,000 years. Specifically, we vary environmental conditions such as rainfall, presence/absence of vegetation and surface particle size characteristics in a series of model simulations to determine their impact on the respective landforms, to revise model input parameters as required. A simulated period of 1,000 years was used as it represents a period in which long term landform evolution patterns and trends may be established and identified. A mine site water balance is important for communicating information to interested stakeholders, for reporting on water performance and for anticipating and mitigating water-related risks through water use/demand forecasting. Gaining accuracy over the water balance is therefore crucial for sites to achieve best practice water management and to maintain their social license to operate. For sites that are located in high rainfall environments the water received to storage dams through run-off can represent a large proportion of the overall inputs to site; inaccuracies in these flows can therefore lead to inaccuracies in the overall site water balance.Hydrological models that estimate run-off flows are often incorporated into simulation models used for water use/demand forecasting. The Australian Water Balance Model (AWBM) is one example that has been widely applied in the Australian context. However, the calibration of AWBM in a mining context can be challenging. Through a detailed case study, we outline an approach that was used to calibrate and validate AWBM at a mine site. Commencing with a data set of monitored dam levels, a mass balance approach was used to generate an observed run-off sequence. By incorporating a portion of this observed data set into the calibration routine, we achieved a closer fit between the observed versus simulated data set compared with the base case. We conclude by highlighting opportunities for future research to improve the calibration fit through improving the quality of the input data set. During the later part of 2007 I was lucky enough to visit the Atlas Copco facilities in Sweden, and to see first hand what a large and diverse company Atlas Copco is. The reason this paper calls the Atlas Copco experience a bonanza is that it means a source of great and sudden wealth or luck; a spectacular windfall or a rich mass of ore, as found in mining. I think this aptly describes the scholarship as it has greatly increased my wealth of knowledge of the mining industry. This paper intends to encourage all those eligible to apply for this fantastic scholarship opportunity, and seeks to thank all those involved who made this scholarship the amazing experience that it was. Atlas Copco produces most of its Swedish products in the town of +rebro, and it was here that I spent most of my time, visiting the Underground Rock Excavation group, the Surface Mining Equipment group and Rocktec. I also travelled around Sweden and was able to visit one of OricaÆs manufacturing plants, the Secoroc groupÆs manufacturing plant, the Geotechnical Drilling and Exploration group as well as being fortunate enough to visit the LKAB mine in the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The trip was not all information on Atlas Copco products and services however; I was able to go to the Ice Hotel in JukkasjSrvi and drink Absolut Vodka out of ice glasses, go on a reindeer safari (as well as eat them!), sample the fine meat from a moose, drink local schnapps, attend the Atlas Copco Christmas party, wander around the wonderful city of Stockholm and generally immerse myself in the great Swedish culture.

A considerable volume of work exists in the literature examining the electrochemical interactions between grinding media and sulfide minerals. Broadly, most sulfide minerals are more noble than forged steel grinding media used during comminution, therefore a galvanic couple between the media and the sulfide mineral(s) exists, which increases the corrosion rate of the grinding media. The corrosion products of the grinding media, iron oxy-hydroxide species, invariably precipitate on to the surfaces of the sulfide minerals thereby affecting their floatability. This paper explores the science behind these corrosion reactions, and provides an explanation of their impact on the pulp chemistry of sulfide mineral slurries and subsequent flotation behaviour. A number of laboratory and plant case studies are used to illustrate the benefits of changing to a more inert grinding media.
