Sampling protocols that are designed to suit the mineralisation style will result in a reduction of the nugget effect and hence resource risk. The a priori need for all sampling programs is the effective characterisation of the mineralisation type(s) to support optimisation. This requires a program of sampling for sampling followed by holistic characterisation. At each end of the coarse-gold to fine-gold spectrum, the samplability of a deposit ranges from relatively simple for fine-grained disseminated gold particles, through to extremely difficult for coarse nuggety mineralisation. Many deposits contain a proportion of both particle size types. The proportion and size of coarse gold particles has a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling, where coarser particles will require larger samples and more specialised protocols. The nature of mineralisation geology/mineralogy and associated gold particle sizing can only be determined by sampling to facilitate optimised protocols. Mineralogical studies, focusing on particle size, particle clustering and distribution in host minerals, are required as part of wider paragenetic and metallurgical investigations. This paper discusses the role of mineralogical studies in the characterisation of gold ores for sampling optimisation through a series of case studies.

A small glass walled pot grate has been used to simulate drying of iron ore pellets in a travelling grate plant. This equipment has enabled the effect of decreasing grind and de- creasing pellet bulk density on plant production to be quantitatively predicted. These predic- tions are compared with plant experience. The use of the laboratory simulator in comparing the effect of various additives on plant production is also described and substantial improvements in both the goethite and free-water drying periods are predicted.

Operations at the Mount Bonnie gold/silver project are described. The project is based on the gossan of a stratiform and stratabound polymetallic sulphide deposit. The gossan contains approx- imately 100 000 tonne of ore grading 8g/tonne Au and 230g/tonne Ag. This is mined in an open cut, and transported to a stockpile area lkm away, from which it is fed to the treat- ment plant. The ore is crushed through two stages and fed to a fine ore storage shed, from which it is reclaimed, milled and cyanide leached in draft tube agitators. The pulp is filtered using a horizontal belt filter to recover a pregnant solution. Silver sulphide is precipitated using sodium sulphide solution, and collected as a mixed sulphide/precoat concentrate on a drum filter. The solution is then passed through carbon columns where the gold is adsorbed and is subsequently recovered by methanol desorption using a process developed by Micron Research, and electrowinning. Modifications to the treatment plant circuit based on operational experience are Described.

The role is assessed and discussed in terms of five main elements; geotechnical complexity, geological complexity, mine scale, percentage sampling and geological uncertainty. Lastly, the overall objectives and mine geology requirements are listed in terms of the various mine development stages; exploration, feasibility-design and operating.

From the mid-1970s ZC Mines at Broken Hill had a policy to increase ore production rates at progressively lower head grades. In the mid-1980s the mine suffered crippling losses at a time of low metal prices. An important contributory factor was the inherent geological distribution of metal grades in the seven defined ore lenses. Grades are bimodal, and perhaps, trimodal, in each ore lens. There is a tonnage deficiency in the critical cut-off grade zone of 7-10% Pb+Zn. Lowering the cut-off grade introduced siliceous and pyrrhotitic material which resulted in significantly poorer metallurgical performance. This example shows that the mine geologist needs to know the grade distribution of the orebody and to convey clearly the downstream implications of changes in the head grade.

The Yabulu refinery of Queensland Nickel Pty Lld near Townsville now imports more than three million wet tonnes per year of nickel laterite ore from New Caledonia and Indonesia, making it the largest importer of any commodity in Australia. The project has illustrated that importing untreated bulk ore and re-exporting high value products makes good economic sense for the company and the nation.The economics of this exercise were considerably enhanced in 1994 by changing the project's principal product from nickel-oxide sinter to refined high-purity nickel metal. It is one of the few operations in the world where nickel ore is transformed to nickel metal at a single site.Several novel technological processes were developed at Yabulu and incorporated into the refinery to allow this product transition to occur. By utilising internally developed technology the new processes were installed at a capital cost of less than $10 million. It is unique for a large nickel producer to change completely the quality of its entire product range many years after the plant was constructed and considerable attention to marketing the new products has been required.The changes have meant that the project is no longer limited to selling lower-value oxide sinter to a relatively small number of large stainless steel mills. In the past year sales of the new high purity nickel metal products have expanded to include a broad range of international customers in the special alloy, foundry and chemical industries.

Ore definition for final stope planning is often a challenging prospect in underground (UG) gold mines which exhibit high geological and grade variability. Unlike the grade control (GC) scenario in an open pit (OP), the ability for the mining geologist to plan a sampling campaign which effectively characterises the underlying mineralisation is fraught with difficulty. UG sampling patterns are strongly clustered and typically not dense enough to characterise the spatial and statistical properties. Very commonly, sample volumes are not large enough to provide a reliable grade estimate of the surrounding rock. These factors critically affect our ability to accurately map out ore positions and estimate metal quantities.At Sunrise Dam, traditional UG sampling and modelling techniques have proven to be an unreliable strategy for successful stope planning and extraction. The problem was first observed during the final cut-back in the open pit for which the mineral resource model was constructed from UG diamond drilling. Open Pit grade control reconciliations were strongly positive for both tonnage and grade compared to the resource model. Underground workings missed significant quantities of ore which was laterally defined by open pit reverse circulation (RC) GC drilling. Upon examination it was realised that the cause of the problem was one of inadequate sample density and sample support, the implications of which potentially affected the entire UG mine.As part of a broader study into underground grade control procedures, detailed reconciliation of initial stope production from the GQ domain also pointed to inadequate sampling as a major constraint to effective grade control and reserve conversion.To overcome this deficiency, dense 115 mm wet RC grade control drilling and conditional simulation modelling has been successfully implemented with the intent to replicate the grade control process in the open pit. The increase in sample density and sample volume has proven to be a very effective tool for mapping out highly complex mineralisation. A marked improvement in stope definition, reserve conversion and Mine to Mill reconciliations has been demonstrated on the back of an innovative approach to UG grade control.CITATION:Clark, F and Carswell, J T, 2014. The Manto Verde copper mine (Atacama Region, Chile) is due to go into production in 1996. It will produce 40 000 tonne/year of copper cathode by heap leaching/SX-EW. Mineralogical studies were undertaken in conjunction with the metallurgical testwork program to characterise the ore and its response to leaching by dilute sulphuric acid. The leachable copper mineralogy is dominated by the oxide copper minerals: brochantite and malachite with minor chrysocolla and atacamite. The gangue minerals include abundant orthoclase, specularite, quartz and chlorite with minor muscovite and trace smectite clay, calcite and limonite. The study showed that complete or partial decomposition of calcite, chlorite, smectite and wad consumed acid and generated solution impurities (Ca2+, Fe2+, Mg2+, A13+, K+, Si4+ and Mn4+2+ ). Although these were manageable at Manto Verde, their uncontrolled build-up could have affected the operation in several ways: the degradation of heap penneability and fonnation of crud in the SX plant from the precipitation of gypsum, goethite, colloidal silica and jarosite; and the entrainment of contaminated pregnant leach solution in the SX organic resulting in the transfer of impurities to the electrolyte and subsequent effects on cathode quality and electrowinning efficiency. In conclusion, process mineralogy played an important role in understanding and managing potential mineral-related problems in the heap leaching and SX-EW recovery of Manto Verde ore.

Testwork carried out in the cooling water circuit at the Yabulu treatment plant of the Greenvale Joint Venturers (Metals Exploration Queensland Pty. Ltd. and Freeport Queensland Nickel Incorporated) since 1980 has resulted in significant improvements to both fouling and corrosion control. At the same time corrosion inhibitor costs have been reduced.Acrylate-type silt dispersants were identified as the most effective means of sediment control in the circuit. An increase in the cathodic component of the corrosion inhibitor coupled with a relatively minor adjustment to water pH has yielded a two to three fold reduction in corrosion rate. It has been established that these lower corrosion rates can be sustained in the face of a 20% reduction in corrosion inhibitor addition rate. Further improvements are indicated with a change of raw water algicide.

Brown and Chitombo (2007) indicated that during the last two decades, the international mining industry has been using mainly mass mining methods to extract safely and economically some of the important commodities such as copper, diamonds, gold, iron and nickel. Mass mining may be implemented either on the surface through large open pits or underground using mining methods such as sublevel, block and panel caving. Developments in the last ten years have demonstrated that caving methods can be applied successfully in strong orebodies at greater depths and in increasingly challenging geotechnical environments for which more traditional mining methods would be unsuitable, unsafe and/or uneconomic. These underground mass mining challenges require æfront endÆ investigation and analysis, robust engineering design and disciplined implementation and operation. Newcrest Mining Limited has focused its efforts on the development of gold/copper projects of substantial scale and margin. To help achieve this, the company is applying and further developing mass mining methods. These include large-scale open pits (OP) and underground mining methods such as sublevel (SLC), block (BC) and panel caving (PC). Block and panel caving now offer economies of scale opportunities for Newcrest to achieve high production rates at lower production costs; thus enabling the exploitation of mineral endowments at higher margins. This paper discusses the practical aspects of caving technologies that Newcrest continues to develop through its expertise at Telfer and Ridgeway SLC operations, Ridgeway Deeps BC and Cadia East PC projects.

Investigation of the differential flotation characteristics between arsenopyrite and pyrite in a ore concentrate have been carried out on a laboratory Leeds flotation cell. Experimental results indicate that some limited separation between arsenopyrite and pyrite is possible by differential flotation under the conditions of high pH and low pulp redox potential. The best performance in this testwork was achieved by using an oxidizing agent at pH 10.7. Of the oxidizing agents tested, NaOCI gave better oxidizing effect than KMnO4. It has also been observed that the pulp redox potential depends on the pulp pH value. At high pH values a hydroxide layer is formed on the arsenopyrite surface, which has the effect of a depressant on the arsenopyrite.

A detailed study was undertaken on the effect of Fe+3 in combination with LIX64N during copper electrowinning from sulphate electrolytes. The results show that the presence of Fe+3 not only affects the current efficiency during copper electrowinning but also affects the cathode quality. The effect is enhanced by electrolysis parameters like temperature, circulation rate, current density, etc. No significant effect was found from the presence of Fe+2. The presence of Fe+3 along with LIX64N causes a synergistic effect and results in a drastic fall in current efficiency. Moreover, cathode quality is also affected. A pyramidal structure is favoured in the presence of Fe+3 but the presence of LIX64N along with Fe+3 promotes a ridge structure. Addition of thiourea not only causes modification of cathode deposits, but also a rise in current Efficiency.

One of the biggest drawbacks of deciding upon a heap leach method of treating gold ore is the risk associated with the full-scale production heaps not performing as predicted by the testwork. This paper examines the key decisions that are taken in the design of a heap leach project, and suggests ways in which exposure to these risks can be minimised. It also looks at monitoring techniques to give early warning of problems and possible remedial actions.

This paper proposes a new multiresource multistage scheduling problem for optimising the open pit drilling, blasting and excavating operations under equipment capacity constraints. The flow process is analysed based on the real-life data from an Australian iron ore mine site. The objective of the model is to maximise the throughput and minimise the total idle times of equipment at each stage. The following comprehensive mining attributes and constraints have been considered: types of equipment; operating capacities of equipment; ready times of equipment; speeds of equipment; block-sequence-dependent movement times of equipment; equipment-assignment-dependent operation times of blocks; distances between each pair of blocks; due windows of blocks; material properties of blocks; swell factors of blocks; and slope requirements of blocks. It is formulated by mixed integer programming and solved by ILOG-CPLEX optimiser. The proposed model is validated with extensive computational experiments to improve mine production efficiency at the operational level. The model also provides an intelligent decision support tool to account for the availability and usage of equipment units for drilling, blasting and excavating stages.CITATION:Kozan, E and Liu, S Q, 2014. The Charters Towers goldfield in northeastern Queensland produced over 206 tonnes of gold from gold-quartz veins hosted by Mid-Palaeozoic granodiorite, tonalite, diorite and to a lesser extent amphibolite-grade meta-sedimentary schist and meta-igneous rock. Mineralisation occurs in grouped, moderately dipping shear zones with altered wallrock rafts and a complex network of quartz veins.Over 75 per cent of the production came from three main vein systems in the central goldfield: the Brilliant, Day Dawn and Towers Hill vein systems.The Brilliant vein system is hosted by undeformed tonalite and contains north-plunging oreshoots on a north-dipping main fissure and on shorter east-dripping hangingwall fissures. The Day Dawn vein system is localised along a north-dipping dyke at the contact of two deformed granitoids in a brittly reactivated mylonite, where horizontal oreshoot plunges may be related to the original megascopic undulations in that structure. The Towers Hill vein system is hosted in two granodiorite types and has multiple ore controls.Structural analysis indicates that the distribution of the oreshoots within the vein systems is variously controlled by the primary fabric and igneous contacts of the granitoid host rocks. Splaying, changes in dip, and fissure intersections are the main controls. The largest vein systems are both in reactivated shallow-dipping mylonite, or in fissures in younger undeformed granitoids. Each vein system lies in a separate structural domain, usually where older east-striking structures are preserved.

Roasting of sulphide and sulph-arsenide gold ores produces unwanted emission of sulphur and arsenic oxides, and a less than complete recovery of gold. Pyrite loses sulphur and arsenopyrite loses arsenic at a useful rate at temperatures of 600¦C and above in an inert atmosphere. Sulphur and arsenic driven off can be condensed before entering the atmosphere. During the process, solid-solution gold redistributes itself on internal surfaces of the resulting iron sulphide. Two subsequent processing options may be used; direct cyanidation of the porous sulphide resulting from the anoxic pyrolysis, or a second-stage roast to oxidise the remaining iron sulphide. The first option may be viable under certain conditions of pyrolysis. The two-stage option has an environmental advantage over the traditional roast because it reduces oxide vapour emissions by 50 per cent. The second stage may provide nearly enough energy to sustain the entire process.

Mt. Whaleback is in the Pilbara region of Western Australia approximately 1200 kilometers north of Perth, the State capital. In this deposit the Mt. Newman Joint Venturers are mining ore reserves totalling 1500 million tonnes of high grade hematite averaging 64.0% Fe. In addition to Mt. Whaleback, 38 ore bodies have so far been identified outside Mt. Whaleback on the Company's remaining 75,000 hectares of lease area. These ore bodies contain major tonnages of iron ore. Extraction at present is planned at a rate of 37 million tonnes per annum at an ore-to-waste ratio of approximately 1 to 1.4. The ore is railed north to Port Hedland on the Indian Ocean where the different products are screened, crushed and blended prior to shipping. The purpose of this paper is to acquaint the reader with the facilities installed in the Mt. Newman operation to form a background to the sampling techniques employed, describe the precisions which were achieved in experiments conducted February through June, 1976 and also to assess the degree of blending which takes place during the various processes and to put a quantitative measure to the degree of blending. The long-term outlook Tor Australla's traditional mining products is for flat demand and continuing low prices. This has come about because of three far-reaching changes since earlier boom days: 1. Continuing declines in intensity of usage of basic mine products; 2. The failure of newer western and third world developing countries to realise growth expectations; and 3. Continued production pressure from third world countries (and first-world primary producers) in an effort to earn foreign exchange and rectify trade balances. These trends have led to a general situation of excess supply and weak demand. In this environment, the prerequisites for survival in the mining sector are first-class mines, modern and efficient production methods, low unit costs, aggressive marketing, and products with reasonable operating margins. Many of Australia's mines meet these prerequisites. Following the A$ depreciation and widespread unit cost reductions, most of these mines will be moderately profitable at current depressed commodity prices. They are well placed to benefit from price rises if these eventuate. A new generation of mines is concentrating on a more profitable product range (gold, diamonds, uranium, mineral sands). Australia's balance of trade remains firmly dependent on the primary mining and agricultural industries (Fig. 1). Despite optimistic talk of high-tech developments, tourism and a resurgence of manufacturing, these will remain a small component of Australia's export structure.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the three types of sample grinders routinely used in the mining industry for the sample preparation of gold ores with particular emphasis placed on testing their capacity to produce a representative assay sample of coarse gold ores. The grinders used in this study are the Labtechnics LM5, the Mixermill 4010 ringmill and the Keegor vertical spindle pulveriser, commonly called a Keegormill. The study was based on the preparation of samples from two sources of known coarse gold ore, the Union Reefs Gold Mine and the Brocks Creek Gold Mine in the Pine Creek region of the Northern Territory of Australia, and a fine gold ore which was from the Macraes Gold Mine in New Zealand. The Union Reefs Mine contains visible coarse gold with 30 per cent to 40 per cent of the gold in the plus 75 μm fraction of milled ore. Discreet particles up to 5 mm have been recorded, Hellsten (1994). Union Reefs Gold Mine recovers 40 per cent of its bullion production through a gravity circuit, Riches (1997). Brocks Creek ore contains visible coarse gold with gravity bullion production fluctuating between 50 per cent and 65 per cent, depending on the mill feed. Average gravity bullion production from the Brocks Creek Mine is 55 per cent, Wilke (1997). The average gold grain size of Macraes Mine ore is 20 μm with 40 per cent of the gold in sub 10 μm particles. No gravity bullion is produced from the Macraes Mine, O'Keefe (1997). The testwork demonstrated conclusively that it is possible to prepare a representative sample for assay, of a coarse gold ore, when a Keegormill is used to pulverise the sample to a nominal 100 μm particle size (90 per cent passing a 100 μm screen by wet sieving). Both the Mixermill and the Labtechnics LM5 failed to prepare a representative sample, even when ground to a nominal 75 μm particle size.

The ores of the Golden Mile exhibit considerable complexity. As a consequence, the operating company, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM), considered it important to develop a coherent database of information describing the nature of the many ore lodes in terms of (1) rock properties and mineralogical content, including relative proportions, grain size, associations and deportment of key elements between minerals, (2) the relative behaviour of consituent minerals in various stages of processing and (3) the nature of the final products and key intermediate streams. The paper describes a sequence of metallurgical tests covering comminution, flotation, gravity concentration, leaching and calcining, carried out on three lodes of the Golden Mile. Key samples generated by the testing were subjected to comprehensive size-by-elemental assaying and QEM*SEM mineralogical determinations of sulphide and precious metal associations. Significant differences between lodes were identified, and the impact of these differences on processing is discussed.
