Local communities are undertaking an increased role in mine project decision making processes, associated with growing pressure and expectations from regulators, financiers and the general public. This is particularly evident in international projects within developing economies. Environmental and social issues are often complex. Solutions demand difficult choices and trade-offs between sustainable development dimensions: economic growth, social equity and environmental integrity. Proactive stakeholder engagement can play a critical role in assisting decision-makers in determining the operational reality of sustainable development by jointly exploring project trade-offs between proponents and affected stakeholders. Good stakeholder engagement has other potential benefits, ranging from reduced financial risk due to regulator delays, legal disputes or negative publicity to increasing market share through good public image. Approaches to consultation and disclosure have changed from short-term regulatory based focuses, to longer-term, strategic tools for relationship building, proactive risk management and new business identification. Approaches to consultation form a significant opportunity to contribute to overall social sustainability. This paper discusses, based on authorsÆ experience, the broader concept of stakeholder engagement and its contribution to social sustainability of the mining industry. The focus is on key considerations for an effective stakeholder engagement. Three case studies outline how broad based, proactive stakeholder engagement can contribute to improved operation and overall sustainability. The case studies include: a greenfields project in Ghana; a long-term mine in Australia; and an open-pit mine in Vietnam.

Al2O3 has been regarded as a harmful gangue component in iron ore, especially causing reduction degradation in industrial sintering of iron ore. The current study aimed to utilise low-grade iron ore containing high Al2O3 content in sintering process. In order to counteract the adverse effect of Al2O3 on reduction behaviour of iron ore sinter, mill-scale and calcined dolomite were chosen as FeO- and MgO-bearing materials. Firstly, mill-scale was added to high Al2O3 sinter and addition was optimised as 10 wt per cent, then calcined dolomite was added further. Magnetite and magnesio-ferrite were identified as the major phases in iron ore sinter when adding mill-scale and calcined dolomite. As the dosage of calcined dolomite increased beyond 4 wt per cent of in sinter mix, unreacted MgO particles were observed, which is ascribed to the limitation of MgO dissolution into magnetite matrix. Both mill-scale and calcined dolomite were effective in improving compressive load and Reduction Disintegration Index (RDI) of iron ore sinter although its reduction degree was highly decreased. The addition of both FeO and MgO-bearing materials to high Al2O3 sinter has a potential to improve the sinter quality, also contribute to the recycling of industrial by-product. However, the amount should be optimised in views of phase development and deterioration of reducibility.

Aitik is a large copper porphyry type deposit located in northern Sweden, currently exploited at an annual rate of approximately 45 Mt. The ore’s exceptionally low head grade of 0.25 per cent Cu and varying degrees of hardness across the entire deposit pose challenges to the two fully autogenous grinding lines, each of which comprises a primary autogenous mill in series with a pebble mill. The variability in ore grindability frequently leads to fluctuations in mill throughput. Within the framework of a geometallurgical approach, the present study investigated the relationships between ore grindability and modal mineralogy. For this purpose, drill core samples from different lithologies were subjected to Boliden AB’s in-house grindability tests. This fully autogenous laboratory-scale test generates a grindability index mainly related to abrasion breakage, which is a significant breakage mechanism within autogenous mills. The test results suggested divergent degrees of grindability within and across the selected rock types. A combination of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, and X-ray fluorescence analyses was performed for the grinding products and bulk mineral samples. The resulting mineralogical and elemental properties were subsequently correlated to the parameters from the grindability tests. It was shown that the main mineral phases, such as plagioclase, quartz, and micas, correlate well with the grindability indices. Similar correlations were found regarding the sample’s chemical composition, attributable to the main mineral phases. A further inverse correlation was established between the sample’s calculated average Mohs hardness and the grindability indices. Moreover, mineral liberation information provided by scanning electron microscopy was associated with the parameters mentioned earlier. The identified relationships between grindability, modal mineralogy, and element grades may help Boliden develop a predictive throughput model for Aitik based on the mine’s block model.

The Health Tracking project is one of five projects being undertaken as part of the Minerals Industry Cooperation Initiative (MICI) û a national initiative sponsored by the Minerals Council of Australia. The aim of the Health Tracking project is to assess the practicality of ways to demonstrate the monitoring of hazardous exposures and the occurrence of related occupational illness and disease and development of management systems and strategies at a national level. This second stage of the project will be completed in 2005 and will cover four areas: pilot development of a comprehensive job exposure matrix (JEM) for the minerals industry; development of both proactive and reactive occupational illness and disease metrics; recommendations regarding appropriate health tracking models; and provision of best practices guidelines for management of occupational health. The synergies between these areas will establish the path towards an effective national occupational health surveillance system and the development of effective prevention strategies and policies.

In this study the bonding within reduced titanomagnetite-coal compacts was investigated. The aim of the study was to better understand the binding mechanisms in the reduced compacts and, based on this understanding, to improve on their strength.Titanomagnetite ore was combined with sub-bituminous coal to form compacts. The compacts were then reduced by heating in a thermogravimetric furnace (TGA) to temperatures between 1000 - 1300°C under argon. The reaction progress was monitored by measuring the weight loss with time. The reduced compacts were found to have low strength in compression testing. The main form of bonding between the reduced titanomagnetite particles in the compact was by the formation of a slag-like material. Increasing the fi nal reduction temperature was found to have a profound effect on the strength of the compacts by promoting the formation of this slag-like material.Attempts to improve the strength of the compacts were made by changing two variables, the type of coal and the addition of rice husks. The addition of coking coal gave reacted samples that had little strength, while the addition of rice husks may have enhanced the strength of the reduced compacts.

Behaviour of minor elements in the dust collecting system connected with fluidized bed roaster for zinc concentrate was investigated by use of the bench scale experimental appara- tus. The dust collecting system was consisting of two dust chambers, hot electrostatic precip- itator, washing tower, mist electrostatic pre- cipitator, drying tower, absorption towers and potassium permanganate solution towers. Some volatile elements such as lead, cadmium and arsenic tend to concentrate in the fine calcine obtained in hot electrostatic precipitator especially in the case of the roasting with insufficient air supply. Special attention was paid to behaviour of mercury. In the roasting tests for plain zinc concentrate, it was considered that most mercury volatilizes at first as elemental vapour in the roaster, but with decrease in temperature of gas around a half of mercury forms compound, and both elemen- tal and compound forms of mercury were found in the gas stream. Elemental mercury is of course difficult to be trapped in the dust collecting system. To promote the compound formations, some additives for concentrate, such as selenium and halogens were effective, especially selenium of a few times equivalent to form HgSe repre- sented complete conversion of mercury from elemental to compound. To clarify the behaviour and removal mech- anism of mercury, various small scale laboratory tests were also carried out. It was confirmed that mercury sulfate formation is possible if temperature and flow rate are adjusted adequate- ly for gas stream consisting of 02-SO2-N2. To trap elemental mercury, various substances were tested, and excellent results were obtained with selenium. Satisfactory results were obtained with a selenium disc heated at 100 to 200¦C in a mercury containing gas stream. Also, applica- bility of scrubbing method with SeO2 solution was investigated, and the solution containing a few hundred ppm SeO2, 0.01 per cent additive and 6 per cent H2SO4 proved to be satisfactory.

There is a Chinese saying-may you live in interesting times. Certainly we do tod.a~our mining professions. We are, of course, totally dependent on a' healthy mining industry for the chance to practice our chosen professions, and for our Institute.Let us look at one of the more interesting facts. The mining industry now accounts for some 50 per cent of Australia's exports.This massive earning of foreign exchange is the key to keeping our increasing overseas debt in check. Furthermore, mineral production..including petroleum, saves us a large amount of foreign currency by providing essential minerals, including energy minerals, for local consumption.With such fundamental inputs to our economy, any primary school student, any child in fact, should be able to see that the mining industry and mining professions are very important to our nation. Yet the average citizen is unaware of this simple fact as they enjoy their high standard'of living and think that we are still living in the lucky country.Therefore, it is most interesting to me that the average citizen, and most of our politicians, seem to hold mining and miners in low esteem. I use the term miners to describe all those important people, like us, who work in the mining professions, and are employed by, or are dependent on, the mining industry.So why are we miners in this paradoxical situation of doing wonderful works, being the backbone of the country, and yet being held in low regard by the very community we underwrite.Truly-it is interesting-or did the Chinese mean intriguing?It is indeed paradoxical that we are the rare people who open up the land, borrow small parts of it for a relatively short time to harvest the mineral crops, then return it to the community for other uses; and when we return the land back to the community at large it should be in better shape than when we started. There will be infrastructure - roads, airstrips, supplies of water and power, parks and housing-all left behind after mining.These benefits to the community are ignored while our critics focus on the small scars on the landscape which sometimes cannot be healed at reasonable cost; and yet, if we allow time, nature usually heals the small scars anyway. Look at New Zealand, particularly the Coromandel Peninsula which was intensively mined and logged; now it is covered with secondary growth and stark pine plantations. Remember that mining scars are infinitesimally small when compared to urban sprawl or clearing of land for farming and grazing, or highways, or the area of most national parks.Thus, miners are important citizens economically, and we are the majority of the few who actually practice the principles of multiple land use.What are the consequences of our image? They are serious in that the poor image we seem to project, discourages many people from becoming involved in, or supportive of, our industry. This brings me to my theme for the year: Students, Education and Communication - the Key to our Future.

From ancient times to the modern world, the mining industry has played a pivotal role in shaping the society that we live in today. It remains an integral part of everyday life and is a catalyst for both technological and economic growth. With finite resources on Earth, and growing pressures surrounding climate change and the environment, space mining opportunities have become of increasing interest. Recent discoveries have shown celestial bodies including the Moon and surrounding asteroids, contain an abundance of critical minerals, as well as resources necessary to sustain human life. These discoveries coupled with a transition into the digital and autonomous age, offer an innovative solution to solving some of the mining challenges currently being faced on Earth. Similarly, they also offer a pathway to enabling deep space exploration and off Earth exploratory missions. However, like with mining operations on Earth, space remains and immensely challenging and complex operational environment. The inhospitable nature of space poses new challenges, including communication barriers, lunar dust, cosmic radiation, and gravity. The challenges and risks are not just technological, as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors must also be considered to prevent unintended consequences and hazards. Furthermore, future workforce, law, financial, and security systems must evolve to enable space mining to take place. These are all known aspects to begin with, but as the complexity of the space grows it becomes apparent that a holistic approach to assess and manage these factors will be required.

lbis new concept in geology is introduced by a reinteipretation of the Archaean stratigraphy of the greenstone belts of the Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia. Evidence is presented to show that the recorded Archaean succession of the Eastern Goldfields Province is composed of two distinct groups of mafic/ultrarnafic and felsic igneous rocks which, together with sediments, form alternating sequences represented by Cycles 1 to 4; Cycle 5 consists entirely of sediments. Recorded stratigraphy for the Murchison and corre1atives of the Southern Cross Subprovinces conform to this pattern. The five basic components are referred to as Unit 1 to Unit 5. A major erosional unconformity between Units 3 and 4 extending across the Craton is identified as a locus of potential major gold occurrence, including fossil placers, where suitable structural situations exist; Units 1 and 3 are identified as potential hosts of gold and nickel deposits; Units 2 and 4 for gold and base metals.

Longwall mining is a form of underground mining and the principal extraction method for underground coal mining in Australia. The method is used in the mining of both thermal and metallurgical coal. The primary market for thermal longwall mines is that of the export market where price is governed against the Newcastle Thermal Benchmark index (globalCOAL, 2016).Australia’s thermal coal export outlook is considered moderate due to slower demand from major importing countries, as well as slowing domestic production. However, ‘Australia is projected to increase its share of world thermal coal exports and become the world’s largest exporter over the medium term as lower prices, increased domestic use and infrastructure constraints limit growth from other key suppliers’ (Office of the Chief Economist (OCE), 2016, pp 25, 58). On the contrary, and as a result of current global coal price trends, the basic economic principles of underground longwall coal mining are heavily stressed. From a life-of-mine perspective, influencing return on investment is at its greatest during project evaluation and execution. Most 3D geological modelling tools were designed for the needs of the oil industry or detailed mine planning and are not suited to the variety of situations encountered in other application domains. Moreover, the usual modelling tools are not able to quantify the uncertainty of the geometric models generated. The potential field method was designed to build 3D geological models from data available in geology and mineral exploration, namely the geological map and a digital terrain model (DTM), structural data, borehole data and interpretations of the geologist. This method considers a geological interface as a particular isosurface of a scalar field defined in the 3D space, called a potential field. The interpolation of that field, based on cokriging, provides surfaces that honour all the data. The 3D model and its parts are always consistent with the observations. New developments allow the covariance of the potential field to be identified from the structural data. This makes it possible to associate sensible cokriging standard deviations to the potential field estimates and to express the uncertainty of the geometric model. It also, for the first time, gives a statistically optimal, geologically sound way of interpolating geology, other than directly joining the dots as you do with CAD. Practical implementation issues for producing 3D geological models are presented: how to handle faults, how to honour borehole ends, how to take relationships between several interfaces into account, how to model thin beds over many kilometres, how to optimise lithological properties and how to integrate gravimetric and magnetic data. We describe all geology surfaces and volumes using implicit functions. These are then rendered onto the required sections, plans, etc. The estimation of orebody grades and tonnes, using an unbiased and optimal geostatistical technique, makes use of the stratigraphically bound 3D geology model. An application to the geological modelling of the Hamersley iron ore district, Australia, is briefly presented.

The fast rate of development in the micro technology industry is enabling computer based systems to be used in ways never considered before. Micro technology can be used to great advantage in the mining industry to improve both safety and productivity. The planned use of electronic 'IN/OUT' boards at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (ZC/NBHC) mines will provide a much improved system for checking that the mines are clear before firing. The provision of remote ocaputerised core logging facilities made possible by small remote data entry terminals will greatly improve the productivity of the personnel involved in all stages of core Logging.

The paper presents an overview of the mining industry of Papua New Guinea. Although the Bougainville problem is still unresolved, new mines like Ok Tedi, Misima and Porgera, which have come on stream during recent past, have raised hopes of sustained growth period in the industry. Kutubu Oilfield is also being developed in the Southern Highlands and the oil production has commenced from July 1992. Government revenue from these mega projects will increase five-fold during 1993 and 1994. A new mine which is being planned is the fabulous Lihir Deposit, on an island renowned to be full of gold. Gold occurs within a volcano which still contains high temperature ground water because the system which created the deposit is still geothermally active.In Papua New Guinea, problems of environmental management are far easier to tackle than those of a socio-political and economic nature involving compensation payments to the landowners and the distribution of royalties and taxes between the national and provincial governments. At the socio-political level, the country has not been able to resolve the problems of land rights versus mining rights. Whenever mining starts in a big way, it raises people's expectations to a very high level, which then becomes the focal point of dispute between landowners, provincial governments, national government and mining companies. A new system called 'Forum' has been tried to bring all parties together and son out the issues. The system appears to be working well in new mines like Ok Icdi, Porgera, Misima and Kutubu Oilfields.

The recently opened Hera Au-Pb-Zn-Ag mine in central New South Wales has provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the calculation of sulfide ore mineralogy using normative methods. Normative mineralogy applies a set of sequential rules based on the species likely to be present to assign the chemical components of a sample to their respective mineral components. The dominant sulfide mineral assemblage present at Hera is galena, iron-bearing sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. A normative technique for estimating the relative abundance of each of these species from drill hole, grade control and metallurgical assay data sets has been developed. This includes a process for deriving a gangue iron value and differentiating pyrrhotite from pyrite using sulfur/iron ratios. A calculated total sulfide volume value has been utilised at the mine to improve interpretation of lode boundaries. Normative drill hole values have also been used for domaining within the orebody, with large scale mineralogical trends evident. Dry bulk density (BD) values calculated using a normative species-weighted method show good correlation with measured BD values (R2 = 0.895) and are a significant improvement on the Pb+Zn+Cu regression method (R2 = 0.646) previously used. Application of these calculations to identify errors in assay databases is demonstrated, with specific reference to the data set for the nearby Nymagee copper deposit. Validation of block model grades is also explored and a method to improve resource estimates using direct normative mineral interpolation is proposed. The integration of the normative data into the production and metallurgical data sets at Hera is described and the relationship of the normative minerals to other economic elements such as gold and silver is discussed.CITATION:McKinnon, A R, 2017. This paper reports on the results of several years of monitoring rehabilitation at a silica sand mine on the Swan Coastal Plain, south of Perth. Mining here occurs below the regional watertable and leaves a post-mine landscape of dredge pond voids (pit lakes) with surrounding battered slopes. The restoration we recommended was to develop the pit lakes as wetlands of regional analogue and value. Several different restoration techniques have been applied to re-vegetate pit lake slopes over many years which have enabled an evaluation of reasons for success/failure of different restoration approaches. Learning acquired clearly showed the benefits of using fresh topsoil for restoration over topsoil that has been stockpiled for several years. Most topsoil used in restoration was from seasonal wetlands and consequently restoration was most successful in the riparian zone from the edge of pit lakes to about 2 m vertically above the water table. Topsoil restored areas above this level remained poor in plant species and cover. Conversely, remedial seeding/planting proved largely unsuccessful. Permanently and seasonally flooded pit lake margins recolonised relatively quickly and successfully with native sedges and rushes. Development of rehabilitated upper slope plant communities over time was evident with loss of typical wetland species and greater growth and survivorship of upland and dampland plant species on mid to upper rehabilitated slopes. Plant communities of lower slopes showed a converse pattern of development, with a shift towards a more typical wetland composition. We believe matching topsoil to site and development of topographic profiles similar to natural wetlands of the region are the keys to optimising restoration success of sand mines with shallow water tables.

Cooling of coal mines in the Bowen Basin, characterised by steep geothermal gradient, is presently achieved mostly through rental surface bulk air cooling in summer months. This paper argues that future mines will be required to focus their cooling resources more intensively to manage a challenging thermal environment where virgin coal temperatures of over 50¦C at a depth of 500 m are expected. Currently, mine cooling systems are employed to maintain the wet bulb temperatures (WBT) to below 27¦C at which point the risks of heat stroke or other heat-related issues are manageable. The capacities of these systems are in the range of 6 MWR to 10 MWR. The relationship between high working temperature environments and injury frequency rates is well established. Therefore, provision of appropriate cooling strategies and understanding their optimum performance and suitability are important to Australian coal mines of the future. This paper evaluates the underground temperature profiles of deep, gassy coal mines with propensity for spontaneous combustion and proposes the long-term cooling pathways to effectively manage thermal hazards. Thermodynamic modelling is performed on a longwall face and includes air leakage effects from goaf streams at various locations along the longwall face. The strategy summarises the application of underground bulk air cooling, chilled water sprays on the shearer and the resulting temperature profiles. Considering the new mining projects planned for the Bowen Basin region, a review of implementable cooling strategies such as mid-gate mobile bulk air coolers (BACs), spot coolers, underground bulk air cooling and the use of chilled water to enhance the positional efficiency of cooling plants, are discussed in this paper. The Cliffs Nickel Mine extracts a narrow near vertical nickel vein using a mining method of underhand bench stoping with paste backfill. In 2014, at a depth of 400 m below surface, the Northern block of the mine began to experience squeezing within ore development. At first the deformation was localised, within 30 m of the stoping front, but later became pervasive extending across the Northern block and resulting in a hiatus in mine production. The global mechanism is a progressive pillar failure, where the inter-level pillars in advance of the production front could no longer withstand the induced load and progressively yielded. The local mechanism of failure was observed as crushing of the massive sulphide ore and ‘punching’ of the pillars into the ultramafic hangingwall exhibited as floor and sidewall dilation and unravelling of the mafic footwall. The cause of the global mechanism was attributed to a combination of factors, including: high overall extraction ratio, small vertical pillar heights between ore development, high stress in relation to the low rock mass strength, shallow stope front angle, and insufficient ground support capacity. Following the progressive failure, the remnant rock mass conditions across the northern block were severely degraded, with numerous falls of ground that led to a reassessment of the mine plan. Recovery of the Northern block started in 2016 as a staged process. Development of the safe recovery work methodology involved a number of considerations, such as: production sequencing, development access design, ground support, and development of specific procedural controls. The Northern block was then broken into smaller mining precincts based on tactical factors such as location, ease of access, scale of rock mass damage and nickel content. A specific ground support standard and work methodology are employed, while cycle sheets are used to ensure quality and completeness of work. Large intersections showing signs of deformation have either been bypassed or treated using Rocprops to maintain stability during stope production. This approach has been successful in safely regaining access and restarting production in areas that had previously been removed from the mining reserve.

AustraliaÆs opal and sapphire mining industry has fallen from its peak in the 1980s and 1990s into a significant low today. This is not due to exhaustion of the resource, but instead an over-reliance of the Australian miner on achieving a fair price for the gemstone product from offshore middlemen dealers. Gemstone and geological research is also at a low as Federal higher education expenditure has fallen with research institutions relying increasingly on private funding in an environment of restricted autonomy and flexibility for researchers. What little remaining research skills the universities have is being bled into the private sector as a result of the mining boom and encouraged by lower than average academic salaries. Nevertheless, some highly innovative research has been taking place, often by self-funded individuals and retired academics simply with a desire to advance the understanding of the particular branch of science in which they are interested. New models for the formation of sapphire and opal are now beginning to be applied to the exploration for these gemstone commodities. This research, together with well thought out plans for managing the gemstone product through its value-adding steps to the jewellery retail level, has the potential to bring about a resurgence in the Australian gemstone industry.

A recently-developed model is used as a tool to optimise the design of blasts used to create final walls in large open pit mines. The use of this tool has allowed present blasting practice and proposed designs to be evaluated to predict the likely extent of rock damage behind the final wall. The evaluation of the damage is dependent on the predominant local geology. Modelling of damage using the software allows the potential zones of rock damage to be evaluated under the following criteria: I . the extent of new fractures formed in the intact rock mass; and 2. the distance to which dilation and extension of existing discontinuities and pre-existing fractures will likely occur. The computer model has been used to examine present blasting practice and to estimate the damage induced by final and intermediate rows of blastholes. The results of current practices are presented in a visual form that allows simple comparisons to be made for any proposed changes in design. To confirm the predictions of the modelling, physical measurements are being undertaken at selected mines to quantify damage behind blast patterns, and experimental programs are underway to measure near-field vibration, or shock, levels. The computer modelling software is being used to qualify and improve the design of final rock slopes in large surface mining excavations, and to provide site engineers with well-defined design criteria for consistency in design. The model is seen to be just one of many tools which are being used in large open cut mining operations to gain an improved understanding of blasting and blast control.

Mining at the Mt Leyshon Gold Mine in semi-arid north Queensland stopped in 2002. Newmont Australia has recently initiated a thorough post-closure water management study of the site by revisiting the existing information and conducting new water-related investigations. The focus of this paper, which is the first publication on post-closure environmental management of the site, is an overview of the site water quality in view of the sources and spatial distribution of polluted mine water, and also the performance of cover systems in controlling water flux though mine wastes. Since the mine closed the rehabilitation of waste rock dumps and tailings dams have significantly improved water quality in the surface receiving waters. However, the Scats Stockpile, the Heap Leach and Old Plant areas, which can potentially produce acidic waters, enriched with heavy metals and arsenic, are the top management priority. Modelling of the potential transport of contaminants in groundwater needs further investigations. A detailed examination of the waters in seepage sumps showed high concentrations of manganese, cobalt, nickel and selenium, which were previously overlooked. The study also showed distinctive chemical signatures for waters at different locations: the waters draining from scats, supergene materials and waste rocks have distinctly lower pH and higher concentrations of dissolved iron, sulfate, heavy metals, Mg, Mn, U, Se and As. While, the tailings sumps are more alkaline, and are enriched in Na and Cl. The southern tailing sump is characteristically As rich. The waters draining from the supergene materials have higher Cu concentrations. Assessment of the cover monitoring systems showed that although covers pass the design criteria, automated recording of data may ignore any failure of the monitoring system. Recalibration of the moisture sensors not only showed realistic moisture values compared to rainfall data but also showed that the permanently installed system records values that are higher than those of the mobile system. Event-driven recording of data overlooks infiltration events. Besides, with a higher time resolution (daily measurements) the breakthroughs could be clearly detected. Modelling of the water balance in covers is underway and an example is given here. Newmont is currently reviewing water management options and is willing to share the lessons learned.
