Water treatment is not æcore businessÆ for mining companies.Just as mineral ores and coals are unique, each requiring detailed characterisation and pilot-testing to determine their optimum beneficiation route, so too are mine waters, each requiring careful assessment to determine the most appropriate treatment. There are many cases of æregret capitalÆ expenditure, whereby mines have installed off-the-shelf equipment only to find it inadequate for their purposes or grossly expensive and labour intensive to operate.Water may be required for potable purposes, ore processing, dust control and/or irrigation. A major driver will frequently be environmental constraints for off-site discharge. Mine water projects can become very complex, and detailed models need to be prepared and optimised to properly consider the raw water sources, the on-site storages, the on-site uses and the off-site discharges, as well as handling the residuals (by-products) of water treatment. By-products may be in the form of concentrated backwash streams or streams of elevated salt content. Careful management of the by-products is required to avoid recontamination of the source water.Regulators often drive mine owners toward reverse osmosis (RO) so that their discharges can be considered as æzero dischargeÆ in terms of potential pollutants. Such decisions need to be based on site-specific information rather than any form of æblanketÆ requirement. An analogy is that many humans like to consume mineral water rather than ænormalÆ tap water. Receiving environments also accommodate or even prefer their æmineralsÆ and so RO is neither warranted nor sustainable in many cases.This paper presents two case studies for operating mine sites, both of which have a significant excess of water requiring environmental discharge. The examples demonstrate a sensible balance between treatment type, environmental constraints, process implementation and residuals management. The Eucla Basin in southern Australia is emerging as an important global source of zircon from heavy mineral sands. Understanding the geological evolution of the basin and movement of heavy minerals down peripheral paleovalleys and along paleocoastlines is essential to effectively refine exploration strategies for heavy minerals in the basin. Integration of geoscientific datasets in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment has proved to be effective in reconstructing depositional environments along the Cenozoic basin margin and in tracing the buried paleorivers that once drained broad areas of the Archean-Paleoproterozoic Yilgarn and Gawler cratons, the dominantly Mesoproterozoic Musgrave and Albany-Fraser Provinces, and the Neoproterozoic-Early Paleozoic Officer Basin. Sea level highstands during the late Middle Eocene (39 - 36 Ma) are associated with formation of the Ooldea coastal barrier complex and the zircon-rich heavy mineral deposits at Jacinth, Ambrosia and Tripitaka. More extensive transgression during the Late Eocene (36 - 34 Ma) built the complex Barton shorelines that host the Cyclone deposit and the extensive ilmenite-dominated occurrences of the Barton West prospect. Multi-generation reworking of the source sands is indicated by the high proportion of deposits that are zircon-rich relative to titanium minerals. The age distribution of zircon grains in heavy mineral concentrates from the Ooldea and Barton barrier systems points to the Musgrave Province as the predominant ultimate zircon source. Paleorivers discharging along the northern basin margin presumably carried a sediment load that was then redistributed by easterly longshore drift to build the extensive coastal sand deposits along the northern and eastern basin margin. The south-eastern extension of these deposits was reworked during Miocene-Pliocene (15 - 2 Ma) times into a series of regressive strandlines that show angular discordance with the Eocene coastlines. This discordance is consistent with evidence for long-wavelength tilting of the Australian continent from Middle Miocene times, as the continent drifted toward a dynamic topographic low induced by convective mantle processes associated with the South East Asia subduction systems. The Dromedary and Gulliver’s deposits probably formed at this time. Ongoing research is focused on the geological features of the basin that influence heavy mineral transport, concentration and preservation, and the processes leading to deposits with high zircon content.

The use of high speed detectors made X-ray diffraction (XRD) an important tool for quality and process control in the mining industries. Besides knowledge about the mineralogy of a sample it provides useful information in terms of quantification of the crystalline phases and the amorphous content. Cluster analysis of XRD data can facilitate multi-dimensional mapping of ore deposits and drill cores, identifying regions of favourable mineral compositions. The studies of this paper demonstrate how XRD and data clustering can be used for grade control, process optimisation and quality control of iron ores and iron ore sinters. These new developments have an enormous potential as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron and sinter materials implemented in an industrial environment.

Waihi Gold Mining Co Ltd [WGM], operated by Normandy Mining, has been internationally recognised for its achievements in environmental management at the Martha Mine at Waihi. In a proactive approach to dealing with community concerns regarding blast vibrations on the North Wall cutback, trials were performed using the Cardox System [Cardox], to determine feasibility of achieving economic fragmentation of andesite overburden whilst bettering management levels of 5 mm/s peak particle velocity. Cardox is a non-explosive pressure breaking system which uses high pressure CO2, Results against conventional Ammonium Nitrate/Fuel Oil [ANFO] using a variety of delays showed that conventional blasting techniques could produce marginal fragmentation within the management levels with occasional excursions, whereas Cardox produced the required fragmentation while not registering on the vibration monitoring equipment. Fragmentation to enable normal excavation by a Hitachi EXII00 hydraulic excavator was achieved with a yield of 16m3 per round. The trails indicated that fragmentation with Cardox at the yields required of over 18m3 per round was possible with further product development. The trial demonstrated that non-explosive pressure breaking is feasible and its application warranted where environmental concerns affect the cost-benefit economics of production blasting in sensitive areas.

Enterprise Mine at Mount Isa is to expand ore production from the current 1.4 to 3.5 mtpa by mining the 3500 Orebody, from which production is scheduled to start in February 1998 making this the deepest underground mine in Australia with its lowest mining horizon at nearly 1.6 km below surface. The following fill requirements were defined for the 3500 Orebody during the feasibility study: 1. a minimum filling rate of 250 ma/h, 2. a curing time of 28 days, and 3. minimum free fill water. This paper mainly describes the investigation of high density and paste fills for the 3500 Orebody. The investigation covered all the key issues relating to fill option selection, including design criteria, material supply and demand assessment, drainage modelling, tailing dewatering method, mix design and a pump loop test. Results of the investigation indicate that both high density fill and paste fill are technically feasible. The investigation has led to the selection of a blended tailing paste for the 3500 Orebody as the paste option has significant advantages over high density fill in stope filling rates and fill reticulation. The blended tailing for paste fill is finer than Isa deslimed tailing but coarser than full plant tailing. The paste fill selected has minimum binder and tailing dewatering requirements while a relatively high filling rate is achieved.

Mineral sands represent an important new resource being developed in the Murray Basin, including parts of western Victoria. This paper will outline a simple methodology for mineral sands characterisation, developed as part of the AMIRA-managed project P777 æThe Development of Heavy Suspension Techniques for High Density Separations (Replacement of ClericiÆs Solution)Æ. This project is currently sponsored by three multinational mining companies (De Beers Consolidated Mines, Iluka Resources Limited and Rio Tinto Limited) and is developing an innovative laboratory mineral characterisation procedure that will allow the replacement of the currently employed highly-toxic chemicals.Mineral sand resources almost always contain more than one valuable (and relatively heavy) mineral. Titanium minerals are found with a large range of titanium contents, giving rise to density variation and often subjective mineralogical descriptions. Companies tend to rely on laboratory heavy liquid separation in the evaluation of samples arising from exploration, mining or metallurgical processes. Unfortunately, there are only a limited number of high density (æheavyÆ) liquids and these tend to be more toxic as their density increases. Low-toxicity inorganic solutions, based on tungsten compounds, have been developed that can be utilised at relative densities (RD) up to 3.0. However, beyond this value currently only organic liquids can be used. Diiodomethane (methylene iodide) having a relative density of 3.31 is commonly used; however, this presents significant health and safety hazards. Mixtures of thallium formate and thallium malonate were found in the early 1900s by Clerici to provide liquids having specific gravities between 4.0 and 5.0, hence æClericiÆs solutionÆ. For the characterisation of the heavy components of mineral sand deposits (eg anatase sg 3.9, rutile sg 4.2, ilmenite sg 4.4 û 4.7 and zircon sg 4.6 û 4.8) there is currently no heavy liquid alternative to ClericiÆs solution. ClericiÆs solution is highly toxic and testing is now conducted by very few laboratories worldwide with costs reflecting the chemical costs (though extensive efforts are made to recover and reuse the liquid, plus the requirement of its removal from the mineral samples), the infrastructure costs and health and safety regimes (eg blood testing of exposed staff, inventory management). A simple laboratory technique of density fractionation is being developed, employing suspensions of fine tungsten carbide particles in lithium heteropolytungstate (LST) solutions, that can replace ClericiÆs solution in the evaluation of fine mineral sands samples (eg -250+150 microns). The developing methodology that can achieve low-cost, low-toxic separations at relative densities above 5.0 will be outlined and the comparison of results with ClericiÆs solution presented.

Photogrammetry-based techniques supported by traditional mapping tools are more frequently used for open pit geotechnical mapping. It fundamentally involves the collection of geological, structural and rock mass data from pit batters when safe to do so. These are essential components for refining and implementing continuous improvements to geotechnical models. The geotechnical model is used to review bench performance, optimise geotechnical design parameters, interpretation and analysis of pit slope stability. This paper is a case study of implementing different pit mapping methods at Mount Carlton gold mine, North Queensland. It critically reviews the tools required, including the Brunton compass, mobile application Clino, geotechnical data mapping software CloudCompare (2015) and Sirovision software. The review compares the image precision, structural measurements and data analysis. The review also underlines mine site management philosophy for safe geotechnical data collection to identify in-pit geotechnical hazards and the mitigation of potential slope instability. Sirovision is a remote sensing system for site geology mapping and interpreting geotechnical characteristics of exposed mining faces. The system utilises off-the-shelf digital SLR cameras to capture stereo photographs of the rock face and uses the latest image processing technology to generate accurate 3D models. These 3D models are digitally analysed using computational geometry to extract unbiased and accurate geological and geotechnical data. CloudCompare processes high accuracy 3D dense cloud rock surfaces reconstructed with photogrammetry software to extract the geological planes using the FACET or Compass plugins. The major discontinuity sets can be observed and the orientation (dip/dip direction) obtained from the algorithm is accurate and reliable for geotechnical assessment, including kinematic and rock slope stability analysis.

A paper identifying anticipated challenges in the extraction of the N3500 Orebody at Glencore Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations was written in 2007. The paper identified the depth of the deposit, the anticipated high stresses, talc alteration and issues with ground support as factors that may affect production. A number of strategies were planned to cope with these issues. After six years of extraction those strategies are evaluated and additional measures taken are outlined. Western Australia has often been referred to as the fly-in, fly-out capital of the world. Fly-in, fly-out is a commonly used practice in Western Australia due to the geographic size and isolated location of the vast resource projects. In the State today, approximately half of all resource sector employees operate on a fly-in, fly-out basis, with a minority utilising drive-in, drive-out arrangements. fly-in, fly-out arrangements are generally beneficial from a sustainability perspective, delivering significant economic, social and environmental benefits to regional communities, the State and nation as a whole. Skills shortages and labour supply issues mean that the industry will be required to discover new ways of attracting and retaining employees, one of which is the adoption of fly-in, fly-out work journey arrangements. By 2015, the minerals sector in Australia will need to employ 70 000 more employees than it currently employs to achieve predicted increases in output. Of the 70 000 additional employees required, 42 000 will be required in Western Australia, almost 15 000 in Queensland and approximately 5000 in both New South Wales and South Australia. The fly-in, fly-out lifestyle as a preferred method of employment should be recognised as a valid lifestyle choice by all members of the community, offering a profound improvement in the quality of life for large numbers of employees and family members. It should be acknowledged that whilst fly-in, fly-out is a preferred option for many companies and their employees, individuals who make a choice to engage in fly-in, fly-out must balance the difficulties associated with the work û isolation and separation from family and friends û against the economic and lifestyle benefits that the work offers. This paper aims to illustrate the significant steps that the resources sector has taken to facilitate the fly-in, fly-out choice by ensuring that the commute option is a safe, attractive and manageable work journey arrangement.

During the Palaeoproterozoic, a large number of granitic intrusions were emplaced in the various parts of the Pine Creek Geosyncline (PCG). In the central region, the granitic magmatism is represented either by the coalesced mass, eg the Cullen Batholith, or individual plutons such as the Mount Bundey Granite which together with the Mount Goyder Syenite intrude the metasedimentary strata, causing wide spread contact aureoles. Some of these granitic intrusions are temporally and genetically related to gold (and less commonly base-metals) mineralisation present in the adjacent metasediments. These plutons are characterised by the presence of biotite and homblende which appear late in the paragenetic sequence. Electron microprobe analyses of biotite and homblende show that these minerals are poorly to moderately zoned. Biotites are characterised by a decrease in Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios when plotted against AIVI. Similarly a modest decrease in Ti from centre to the margins of the biotite crystals has also been observed. Furthermore, an increase in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios from centre to the margins as well as in mafic to felsic rocks is also apparent. On the other hand, homblendes from the granitic bodies display less well marked trends and are poorly zoned. However, they show systematic increases in Mg/(Mg + EFe) ratios, and decreases in Fe, Al"' and Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratios, when plotted against Si. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on powdered samples of the plutons give results characterised by high values ranging from 0.8 x 10-4 to 2.0 x 10-3 emu/g which place the granites in magnetite- series field. This indicates that the oxidation state of the magma was high during crystallisation. The range of chemical compositions of the mafic phases indicates a rise in the oxidation state of the magma as it progressively became saturated in H20-volatiles and other metals, not partitioned into the earlier crystallised phases in the final stages of magma consolidation. These variations in chemical compositions also indicate that initially fOz was high and became progressively higher during fractional crystallisation of magmas; this subsequently led to the emanation of hydrothermal fluids responsible for the mineralisation in the adjacent metasediments.

Many young mining engineers do not consider consulting as a possible job, believing that many years of working on-site is required to achieve practical experience, develop expertise and acquire industry contacts. However, mining consultancies employ engineers with varying levels of experience, including part-time university students, graduates and engineers who are relatively new to the industry. This paper outlines the role of a young engineer in a large mining consultancy and the benefits to both the consultancy and the client of having a mix of consultants with a diverse range of experience. From the authorÆs perspective, the work experience, lifestyle and rewards of mine consulting are compared to site based work, including a discussion on whether consulting is able to offer the professional development that a young engineer needs.

This paper presents the results of research work conducted to assess if aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) can be used to treat roaster calcine leach residues such that recovery of gold in this material can be achieved with subsequent application of the thiocyanate (SCN-) leaching system. The project is mainly aimed at assessing an alternative use for sulfur dioxide gas generated during flotation concentrate roasting. The calcine leach residue sample used in the study contained 2.56 g/t gold. The reason for this high level of residual gold is thought to be due to gold surface passivation by thin iron oxide films, presence of gold in solid solution with refractory iron oxides and encapsulation of gold in the structure of these iron oxides.The study was conducted in three stages. The first stage was the characterisation of a sample from a roaster calcine leach residue. The second stage in the project was a set of leaching tests to assess the feasibility of using aqueous solutions of sulfur dioxide to reductively dissolve refractory iron oxide mineral phases contained in the calcine. The final objective was to assess the efficiency of thiocyanate, a gold complexing ligand stable under acidic and oxidative conditions, to extract gold liberated during sulfur dioxide leaching.The study showed that the reductive sulfur dioxide treatment of the calcine leach residues followed by oxidative thiocyanate leaching to extract gold was not a particularly efficient process as only around 20 per cent gold could be extracted. Leaching the calcine residues by any of these systems separately also extracted the same amount of gold (12 - 14 per cent) implying that irrespective of the solution potential, the acidity helps dissolution of gold encapsulating minerals, mostly hematite, but at a very slow rate. The findings on the topic in the literature and during this study show the requirement for further technical investigations and economical analyses on two cases. The first case is to roast gold concentrates to produce magnetite rather than hematite followed by sulfur dioxide and thiocyanate leaching of magnetite containing calcines. The second case is to apply a magnetic concentration process to conventional roast-cyanidation calcine residues to produce a gold-rich magnetite concentrate that can be further treated with sulfur dioxide followed by thiocyanate leaching.For both cases, the best evaluation of the sulfur dioxide leach system in extracting residual gold from calcine leach residues will require a detailed economic analysis to find out the balance between the value of the gold recovered and the loss of revenue from acid production. There are a number of roasters that do not produce acid. "In 2015 operations under the ownership and/or management of all Newmont Mining Corporation subsidiaries (Newmont) produced 5.7 Moz of gold and 619 Mlb of copper from mining operations in five countries, with well over 100 Mt of ore processed by various grinding technologies. Processing methods used in the extraction of metals include flotation, oxidation, conventional cyanidation and heap leaching. The grinding technologies applied in milling operations feeding metal recovery processes include conventional wet grinding semi-autogenous grinding (SAG), rod and ball, dry grinding, concentrate regrinding and ultra-fine grinding, and ball milling of high pressure grinding roll product. SAG/ball (SAB) configurations represent the dominant comminution flow sheet within the company and the circuit configurations employed include SAB, SABC-A, SABC-B and single-stage (SS) SAG milling, with SAG mill feed ranging from run-of-mine (ROM) ore through to secondary crusher product. The collective experiences earned from designing, operating and debottlenecking these various comminution circuits provide many lessons that can be applied to the design and optimisation of future operations. This paper provides an overview of Newmont’s diverse comminution circuits, discusses recent performance and offers some insight into optimisation and design considerations based on recent experience in both endeavours.Citation:Giblett, A and Hart, S, 2016. In 2021 the ports of Port Hedland and Dampier in the Pilbara Region of Western Australia handled 900 Mt of iron ore. This ore was produced in the Hamersley’s mines and transported by trains to the ports for subsequent export. Dust, which is generally considered to be particles less than 100 μm in diameter, is generated at all steps in the supply chain. Whilst all dust may have potential impacts on human health and mangroves and buildings a proportion of the dust is classed as respirable (PM10) dust, which consists of particles <10 μm in diameter. In 2021, in response to the community concern with iron ore dust, CSIRO commissioned an internal study to characterise and benchmark the dustiness of the different ores and to develop targeted strategies to minimise dust impacts, without affecting other iron properties, such as stickiness during transportation. A specific concern is that that the dust in the PM10 fraction may contain significant amounts of particulates, such as free silicates which may have health implications for the workers and residents. This study provided detailed mineral and chemical characterisation of the dust generated from the railed fine ore products for five generic Australian ore types: Australian Channel iron Deposit (ACID), Australian Brockman (AB), Australian Marra Mamba (AMM), Australian Pilbara (AP) and Australian magnetite (AM). The dust from these fine ore products were compared to that generated from a sample of Brazilian Hematite (BH) type ore fines. The ores were evaluated for their physical, chemical and mineralogy properties, dust generating potential and understandings of the relationship between the dustiness of iron ores and their physiochemical properties. The size distributions of the railed fine ore products were determined and a suite of analyses were conducted on subsamples of total (-106 μm) and fine (-38 μm) dust. For all the ores, the total dust fraction contains less Fe and more contaminants (SiO2 and Al2O3) than did the bulk ore. The fine dust fraction contained even less Fe and more contaminants (SiO2 and Al2O3) than the total dust fraction. This suggests that the iron ore dust contains more clay and potentially free silica than does the bulk ore. These findings were supported by optical and Scanning electron microscopy analyses of the samples. Dustiness measurements were made for each of the different ores (-106 μm) to investigate the relationship of dustiness of various iron ores with their physiochemical properties and assess their responses to dust suppression by the application of water sprays.

The Institute has Branches throughout Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Oceania, whose activities complement the corporate occasions arranged for the benefit of all members by Headquarters in Melbourne. Members are drawn from all sections of the industry - private enterprise, government, research, education, and the support sector, including consultancies, manufacturers and suppliers. The main problem of geostatistical simulations is to reproduce the real characteristics of the mineral deposit when there are few conditioning data. In this case, the geological interpretation, based on structures, geophysics and geological maps, plays the major role in terms of resource evaluation.The paper investigates the use of principal component analysis (PCA) to help classify multiple geostatistical categorical simulations considering the similarity among them and the interpreted model, herein referred as training image (TI).An iron deposit with four lithological facies, in a specific horizontal plane, was used as case study for two-dimensional (2D) simulations. Sequential indicator simulations (SIS) was used to obtain ten equally probable 2D images, which were generated and compared against the interpreted model (TI).In this study, 11 random variables are comprised by the vector of ten SIS realisations plus the training image (TI). The similarity between the TI and each SIS realisation is measured using the angle between the TI and SIS vectors projected in the new coordinate systems (PCA factors). It is possible to order the SIS realisations from the highest to the lowest PCA factor taking into account the TI similarity.The visual analysis of the images shows coherence in the PCA results as a method to measure similarity. This methodology can be used as a post-processing tool to rank simulation results and to select the ones which better represent the prior known geology or to compare the quality of different methods of simulation.

The Tropicana deposit was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly. Discovered in a remote, barely-explored area of Western Australia not previously thought prospective for gold, Tropicana is the most significant gold find in Australia for more than a decade. The new, large scale open pit gold mining operation will produce an annual production of around 330 000 to 400 000 oz over a ten year mine life mining around 60 Mt/a.Process plant construction started in early 2012 and is due to finish in the December 2013 quarter. The mining contract was awarded to Macmahon Holdings (Macmahon) and mining commenced in July 2012 using conventional drill and blast, truck and excavator open cut methods.As a construction and start-up project in a greenfields location, the establishment of mining activities at Tropicana Gold Mine (TGM) involves the implementation of technical and operational systems, including the mining contract. Some of these systems and likely challenges were identified during earlier studies, while others were not foreseen until they were encountered. Alternatively, the time frames around implementation change depending on the changing knowledge of the project and industry environment. These systems include those common to the industry and those specific to the operation and location.This paper examines the implementation and development of a number of the systems specific to the establishment of mining operations, including the history, process and some outcomes. Although expected to be discrete systems to implement, they become interdependent. The demand for iron-ore is ever increasing with the industry directly employing 60 500 people in a range of highly skilled roles in Australia. In the year 2019, the global iron-ore production was 2.85 billion tonnes. It is estimated that each tonne of beneficiated iron ore produces 400 kg of tailings. The IOTs are fine, dense and stable crystalline material mainly composed of iron oxides, alumina and silica. The current and most applied method of iron-ore tailings (IOTs) disposal is using subaqueous disposal of tailings in dams. The footprint generated by a tailings dam is massive and requires constant monitoring due to the possibility of a failure making the operation and maintenance of tailings dam extremely expensive. This review briefly discusses the known causes of tailings dam failures, their impact to the environment and day-to-day human life and potential applications of IOTs. The increase in water content enhances the pressure on dam walls. This in turn increases the liquefaction potential of the tailings and reduces the overall strength of the dam making it more vulnerable to failure. Potential applications of IOTs are in paints, aggregates in construction materials and bricks. The reuse of IOTs reduce waste and generates further revenue facilitating a path towards a sustainable future for the industry.

Today, it is accepted that rock fragmentation by blasting affects loading and hauling operations, and also directly influences on downstream processes such as crushing and grinding. In this research, the influence of rock fragmentation by blasting on the performance of three mills at Gol-e-Gohar iron ore mine No 1 was studied. Firstly, the fragmentation of conventional blast patterns in iron ore (5 &#215; 6 m) was studied using image analysis and the performances of three mills were monitored. Then, a new blast pattern (4 &#215; 5 m) was designed and nine blasts were carried out using this pattern. Hatch forecasts that an increasing share of seaborne traded iron ore will be ultrafine, being either concentrate or pellet feed. This provides several challenges for the iron and steel industries, but the principal concern is: how much ultrafine iron ore can be consumed on sinter strands and with a minimal effect on productivity?This paper will identify new supply by project through 2020. Demand will be estimated for sinter production and practical steps will be identified to increase ultrafine consumption in sinter strands. The long-term iron ore price will be forecast to balance supply and demand.
