Recent and on-going studies on the leaching of gold, the properties and activity of carbon, developments in the elution of gold from carbon, and methods of recovering gold from solution are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on Australian contributions, and their impact on gold metallurgy. Consideration is given to the future development of selective solvent extractants, ion exchange resins or alternative reagents for cyanide.

Lignite deposits of Central Otago Miocene Dunstan Formation accumulated on a broad alluvial plain and on deltas that flanked a large freshwater lake. The regional subsurface distribution and configuration of the lignite-bearing strata are identified within the context of depositional systems and placed into a genetically defined stratigraphic framework. The stratigraphic and depositional models constructed, should form an integral part of the geological assessment process to guide future regional or mine based lignite drilling programmes. Further testing and evaluation of the commercialy important lignite deposits in the Blackstone and Roxburgh Coalfields are required to adequately characterise the lignites and their geological setting, particularly to select methods of mining and wise uses of the lignite.

Periodic dilute sulphuric acid treatment ofstill, batch-fed, molassesenriched, microaerobic, manganese-dioxide-Ieaching microbial cultures led to marked improvements over untreated cultures. Percentage Mn++ recoveries increased (7X), rate of Mn++ formation improved (3X) and yields of Mn++ per molasses use were more economical (5 X). The yield in terms of molasses used improved with decreasing sugar used (eg 1.17 g Mn++/gram molasses at 0.2 per cent molasses (w/v) feed and 24 per cent (w/v) pulp density MnO2 tailings). The most effective Mn++ leaching in terms ofpercentage recovery (97 per cent) and rate ofleaching (46 mg Mn++/day) was at 0.5 per cent molasses (w/v) and 14 per cent pulp density (w/v) MnO2 tailings.

A computerised cataloguing system for geological specimens is described. The catalogue is designed for use with a compactus-type storage system. The information stored in the catalogue for each specimen includes the type of specimen, locality information in terms of standard ~ap sheets and descriptive location, geological age, stratIgraphy, and specimen descriptions. The catalogue can be interrogated at any level of detail on the basis of any combination of these specimen parameters.Other information stored for each specimen 'is the compactus address, collection date, reference information and the type of analyses performed on that specimen:Any mterrogatlon produces a listing of those specimens which satisfy the search criteria.

Outotec has performed numerous research and development projects and various surveys in the study of reverse iron ore flotation. Over the past four years their TankCell-70 and TankCell-160 flotation cells at the Germano concentrator of Samarco in Brazil were extensively surveyed. These surveys have revealed some extreme operating conditions in reverse iron ore flotation and are the subject of this paper. Some of the findings include large variations in the content of solids in the various flotation stages. At the bottom of the cleaner cells, the content of solids by weight reached over 60 per cent, whereas at the bottom of the scavenger cell this was less than 50 per cent. Froth carry rates were also significantly different in the various flotation stages. In the case of coarse material, the scavenger cells operated at a froth carry rate of over 40 t/h.m2. With fine material, however, froth carry rates of less than 10 t/h.m2 were measured. High froth carry rates caused significant changes in the residence times at Samarco. In the rougher cells, the fifth cell had more than double the residence time of the first cell. This was even more pronounced with the scavenger cells, where the second cell had more than triple the residence time of the first cell. High froth carry rates also caused losses in iron recovery. As a consequence of such findings, it appears that different rules apply in the sizing of reverse flotation circuits compared to direct flotation circuits. Different operating parameters (mixing intensities and air flow rates) must also be used in the rougher, cleaner and scavenger cells in order to optimise the metallurgical performance. Early strategic mine planning includes decisions over the organisation of work and workforce accommodation. These decisions involve significant commitments that affect not only employee quality of life but also the impacts and relationships with existing local communities. Strategies for workforce accommodation are characteristically community-based (either as purpose-built company towns or integrated within existing local communities) or commuter (fly-in, fly-out) mine camps. The quality of accommodation underpins the fulfilment, morale and motivation of employees. This is not only relevant to productivity and safety, but also to recruitment and retention, particularly with the current onset of a significant human resources crisis. In the event that communities exist in proximity to a proposed mine then the accommodation strategy selected can influence the value-adding potential for the sustainable development of such communities. This early planning is particularly challenging where mine locations are isolated and/or face significant economic, social and political adversity. This paper draws upon a case study review of five large mining projects implemented in three South American countries, selected to cover a range of scenarios and accommodation strategies. The review aims to advance our understanding of the complexity of the underlying planning issues. Each scenario considered the prevailing environmental, social, economic and political situation, together with the adopted accommodation strategy. The case study review aimed to identify lessons learned and to make recommendations for advancing mineworkersÆ accommodation planning practice.

Underground and opencast coal mining has been ongoing since 1896 on the Stockton Plateau, West Coast, New Zealand. Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) from historic and current mine workings has had an adverse environmental impact on the surrounding aquatic environment. The two main catchments affected by ARD are those of the Mangatini and St Patrick streams. These catchments flow into the Lower Ngakawau River, which holds high amenity value for the local community. Water quality targets set by Solid Energy for 2010 in the Ngakawau River include increased pH and clarity and a decrease in certain dissolved metals.   At-source ARD minimisation options are the first stage in mitigating the effects of mining acid forming rocks and reducing acid loads in the Mangatini and St Patrick stream catchments. ARD minimisation techniques reduce the quantity of acidity generated and thus reduces the treatment required. Treatment will be required for many years at Stockton due to current and historical acid formation. This paper looks at the treatment options that Solid Energy has been investigating including limestone leach beds, engineered wetlands, oxic limestone drains, and limestone dosing of catchment drainage. Particular focus is given to fine limestone dosing of the Mangatini stream and subsequent water quality improvements.

Calculations of the temperatures of metal, coke, and gas at any level in the cupola furn~ce can be carried out by means of heat balances, using data obtained from experiments with an 18 in. experimental cupola. The results can, to a certain extent, be verified by means of heat transfer calculations.The curves thus obtained, showing the variation of temperature with height in the cupola, provide a valuable picture of the heat transfer processes in a shaft 'furnace.INTRODUCTIONThe Brown Coal Research Laboratory, of the University of Melbourne, has been engaged in recent years on a programme of iron-melting tests in an experimental cupola furnace.Although the ultimate aim of this work is to develop brown coal char as a cupola fuel, most of the experimental work so far has been with conventional coke. The testing programme was designed to provide information on the effect of variables such as blast rate, metal-coke ratio, and coke size on the overall melting process, e.g. melting rate, temperature of metal tapped, and stack gas composition.However, in many cases data were obtained on conditions inside the furnace by measuring temperatures and gas compositions. The aim of the work described in this paper was to qevelop a method for using this data to obtain information on the processes taking place in the cupola.Very little research has been done on the combustion of fuels in shaft furnaces. Early work on this subject, as well as the initial stages of the Brown Coal Research Laboratory's programme, has been discussed by Evans (1959). The timber township of Powelltown, Victoria lies N.E. of Yarra Junction, 60 miles east of Melbourne and in the site of the mill of the Victorian Hardwood Company Proprietary Ltd.A lift gauge railway owned by the company connects Yarra Junction on the Warburton line, with the township through two or three smaller mill centres on the way.The company has been operating for some 12 years. In the divide, about four miles from Powelltown, between the Little Yarra and Latrobe rivers, cutting was continued with material being handled by winch and double incline haulage over the divide. A small bush locomotive dealt with the traffic between the divide and the cutting site.In order to reduce costs, which were heavy at the haulage, the company decided to make a continuous railway from Powelltown to the bush by means of a tunnel through the divide.Hand bore holes were put down on the proposed line of tunnel and showed that the divide at this point consisted of decomposed depth of about 100 ft. towards the eastern or Latrobe side - and that the undecomposed granite summit lay to the west of the surface summit.The bores also served to locate the underground water line, this was afterwards found to rise and fall with wet and weather.To avoid tunnelling in hard and heavy water, the grading of the was laid out with the summit of the hard granite the point in the line.

A procedure was required for the rapid determination of silicon in low-alloy irons and a suitable method used the formation and reduction of silicomolybdic acid at 50°C. The procedure gives results for elemental silicon and this enables the correct computation of oxidation requirements in basic oxygen steelmaking. The method could be useful in iron foundries which have not installed direct reading spectrometers.INTRODUCTIONOxygen steelmaking experiments required rapid determinations of 0,5-1,6 per cent silicon in iron (3-4 per cent C) within 10 min of sampling; a reproducibility better than ±0.03 per cent Si was desired. Only elemental silicon (Si°) is of interest as a fuel in basic oxygen steelmaking technology, and the proposed procedure determines exclusively this form of silicon. The method is described as it may prove useful to other workers although the interference study would be incomplete for some applications.The analysis of silicon in iron is frequently obtained using direct reading spectrometers, but for the proposed experiments the spectrometers could not be used because of the prohibitive distance from the furnace. It should be noted that spectrometers determine both the elemental silicon and that present as silicon dioxide in occluded slag and inclusions.The silicon content of iron and steel is determined in this laboratory by spectrophotometric measurement of a "molybdenum blue" colour. The history of zinc production in Australia is outlined including attempts to make zinc electrolytically at Cockle Creek, N.S.W. in the last century, the use of horizontal retorts at Cockle Creek and Port Pirie, South Australia, production by electrolysis at Risdon, Tasmania and at Port Pirie using zinc oxide fumed from lead blast furnace slag and production by the Imperial Smelting process at Cockle Creek. Developments in the electrolytic process are described including those in roasting, acid manufacture, leaching, purification, electrolysis, melting and casting. The Imperial Smelting process technology is also outlined. In both processes global technology is reviewed, including important Australian contributions.

In order to be most effective in its application and availability, this information needs to be collected in programmes with defined objectives and deadlines. Applied Geology Associates have established a methodology to facilitate the structured collection of environmental data, which provides for the diverse needs of both engineering design and applications for statutory and non-statutory approvals. Principal aspects of this methodology are the scope, timing and management of the environmental studies within the overall project planning framework.

The ability to design a beneficiation process for a new orebody based on particular feed characteristics is a powerful and practical tool. A new technique has been developed where beneficiation outcomes can be calculated by combining feed size-by-size chemical analysis, mineralogy, liberation and particle characteristics with a series of simple theoretical unit separation models rather than a simple mass balance approach or an exhaustive beneficiation test program. The new technique provides the ability to rapidly identify ore types that have the potential to meet product specifications whilst also rejecting others that will not meet specification even if a perfect separation was achieved. Beyond the broad scale decision making process, practical mineral separation curves from actual plant data can be used to more closely simulate the proposed process. This approach reduces the amount of laboratory and pilot plant work necessary by targeting what process stages will be required, increases early rejection of uneconomic options, identifies problematic ore types or unit operations and is a step towards estimation of final grade and recoveries achievable in potential circuit configurations.

Thallous chloride and cadmium metal were recovered from a thallium-cadmium concentrate by a method suited to the treatment of small batches. Differences in oxide solubility and control of pH were employed to separate the thallium and cadmium. The cadmium metal produced by zinc reduction analysed better than 99.95 per cent Cd and thallous chloride of high purity was precipitated from solution.
