The Ernest Henry mine is a transverse sublevel cave (SLC), which is relatively unique due to the 45 degree inclination of the orebody. To economically recover ore, each sublevel is horizontally offset from the previous level by around 25 m, depending on the orebody geometry. Mine development, slotting and initial production within this zone occurs in a high stress abutment that increases in magnitude at depth. These areas are seismically active and close to the hanging wall where cave propagation is yet to initiate. High stress conditions and the close proximity to the cave seismogenic zone results in challenging geotechnical conditions in the step out zone of each level and requires management of hazards including stress driven rockfalls, rock bursts and pillar failure.This paper outlines how these hazards were forecast using numerical modelling and geotechnical monitoring. Risk management techniques included dynamic ground support design, development of a new mine layout and extraction sequence as well as delayed re-entry into seismically active areas. Ongoing monitoring, instrumentation measurements and field observations were used to track the effectiveness of the controls.Future production levels are forecast to experience increasing stress and seismicity, which will increase demand on excavations and installed ground support. This technical note describes a problem with WANG82, a ventilation network analysis programme. The problem was highlighted by Renison Ltd when using the programme on large, complex networks. Under certain circumstances the programme produced incorrect results or failed to converge to a solution.

Present roof bolting practices in the collieries of Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Ltd. are outlined. Roof support has been improved since introducing roof bolts and it is hoped to increase the reliability of the bolts still further.Expansion-shell, and split and wedge roof bolts five to eight feet long are placed by "Atlas Falcon" and "Fletcher" roof bolters. Both anchorage and tightening have presented some problems.Good panel supervision is required if systematic roof bolting is to be properly co-ordinated with coal production without unnecessary delay to either. Successful roof bolting can only be the product of conscientious men and supervisors who are all convinced of its value. A rigid operational code should be established early and maintained.INTRODUCTIONRoof bolting is a method of support which is permanent and reduces or eliminates the need for other support; The method was pioneered in America and was first experimentally investigated in Australian collieries at Elrington in 1949 (McKensey, 1953). Pneumatic installation methods were employed. Subsequently, a method of using standard hand-held electric coal drills was developed at John Darling Colliery (Horseman, 1954). Pneumatic roof bolting equipment was first operated in the collieries of Australian Ironand Steel Pty. Ltd (A.I. &. S.) in 1951. Since then various hydraulically operated mobile machines have been installed in Australian collieries and these, together with improved pneumatic equipment, form the two present basic methods of placing ,roof bolts. Roof bolt anchorage is achieved by either split and wedge or expansion-shell bolts.The two broad types of roof bolting are 1. consolidation of strata, and 2. suspension support.

The second will be a technical paper on the development of a welded coupling compatible with urethane lined pipework. We trust that by discussing our recent work we can leave two lasting impressions on you: the versatility and useful role of slurry transportation, and the leading role taken by New Zealand in this technology This paper discusses three recent projects the New Zealand Steel Ironsand Transfer Line the Coarse Coal Ship Loading Technology the Nerang River Sand By-pass System. These have followed on from the other slurry projects with which McConnell Dowell has been associated such as the ironsand export trade at Waipipi and Taharoa. The New Zealand Contractors Federation awarded the Construction Award for 1986 to McConnell Dowell for the Ironsand Slurry Pipeline.

A rotating disc geometry was used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of copper cementation with zinc in sulphate solution. For copper concentrations of the order of 10 p.p.m., a porous, adherent deposit is formed on the zinc surface and this has a significant influence on the reaction rate. When the specific mass of deposit is less than about O· 35 mg/cm2 the surface may be considered as smooth and the rate is described by simple convective counter diffusion of zinc and copper ions through a laminar diffusion boundary layer to the deposit-solution interface. In the presence of additional deposit, the diffusional mass transfer rate is increased by increased surface roughness.The rate under these conditions is first order, with the degree of enhancement independent of further increases in the specific deposit mass. The enhancement in rateis, however, directly related to the initial mass flux and the species involved in the reaction.Preliminary work showed the same mechanism to apply to cementation from chloride solution, solutions of high zinc concentration, and cementation of copper with iron..

Block cave mining, in its broadest sense, has transitioned from an orebody/rock mass determined method of extraction, to a low-cost and high production mining method that may be applied to any large ore deposit. This inherently means that caving is now required in more complex rock mass conditions where assistive damage, through preconditioning, may be necessary. This requires comprehensive understanding of the geology, and its interwoven relationship with geotechnical parameters, and is made more challenging due to limited exposure in block cave mines. Limited mine development throughout the cave volume equates to a heavy reliance on drilling data in terms of observations, modelling of the mine geology, and collection of geotechnical data. This translates as increased uncertainty of geological and geotechnical models and has potential to impact significantly on the ability to make informed decisions in the design and operation of the cave mine.Modelling of cave propagation behaviour requires a complex, coupled system of draw of material, flow of material through the cave stocks, and propagation of the cave-back assisted by autogenic stress-related breakage of the rock mass, manifested as seismicity. The role of geological features in the process of cave propagation is not well understood and requires evaluation on a mine-specific basis, given the diversity of geological controls/settings of ore deposits and local variability of stress fields.Seismic monitoring systems can elucidate key geological features and domains, as heterogeneous seismogenic activity is observed ahead of the advancing cave-back. The observations made from analysis of seismic monitoring data may have potential to be used as a validation tool for numerical modelling of predicted cave behaviour in similar geological settings (eg next lift/panel).Understanding of the geological structure, at all scales, is critical to optimise the design and operating decisions made in a block cave operation. The Thames gold-silver deposits are part of the Hauraki goldfield, situated within the Miocene to Pliocene calc-alkaline Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The Waitangi vein system is one of the mineralised ore shoots in the Thames district. The Thames gold deposits are characterised by shallow level epithermal vein mineralisation with phyllic to advanced argillic alteration assemblages and abundant sulphide minerals including pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite. Gold occurs as electrum in association with sulphide minerals. Microprobe analyses.of sphalerite grains from the Waitangi deposit mostly range from 0.8 to 1.5 mole % FeS, although one sample contains 9.5 mole % FeS. Arsenopyrite from Waitangi yields a range from 33.1 to 34.6 atomic As (%). There is no discernible correlation between the FeS content of sphalerite and gold grade in the Waitangi deposit suggesting that gold deposition is probably not controlled by changes in temperature and activity of sulphur aS2 that control the FeS content of sphalerite. The possible causes for gold deposition are thought to be boiling, mixing and changes in pH. Sulphur isotope analyses of mixed sphalerite-galena and sphalerite-galena-ehalcopyrite samples yield a narrow range of d34SCDT values (-1.0 to 0.9 ë;n=5), whereas late spongy pyrite gives unusually light sulphur isotope values (-16.7 to -27.9 ë; n=4). The sulphur isotopic values of base metal sulphides from Waitangi suggest that the sulphur was derived from a magmatic source. However, the source of light sulphur in the late pyrite grains is not known. Preliminary fluid inclusion+studies indicate homogenisation temperatures between 173¦ and 284¦C and salinities of 0.23.0 NaCI equiv. wt % (uncorrected for C02). Vein quartz at Waitangi yields d18OSMOW values from 6.8 to 12.7 ë (n=23). The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of ore fluids is between -2.1 to 3.8 ë at 250¦C and -0.1-5.8 ë at 300¦C. Oxygen isotope analyses have revealed significant variations in d18O values with elevation and gold grades. Zones of gold enrichment coincide with a zone of variable oxygen isotope values at the top of the vein system, where boiling and/or fluid mixing most likely occurred. Oxygen isotope values varying with gold grades within the Waitangi conduits suggest that d18O values may be useful in targeting bonanza grade gold mineralisation in epithermal vein systems.

Observed mineral assemblages in the Mt. Lyell copper deposit can be correlated with phase equilibrium investigations in the systems Cu-Fe-S and Fe-Zn-S. The trend of crystallization (or paragenetic sequence) of the ores is reflected in a progressive increase in the Cu: Fe and metal: sulphur ratios of the assemblages. This trend agrees with the regional zoning of the district. Tentative relationships between the paragenetic sequence, sulphur vapour pressure, and temperature are presented graphically. The absence of a suitable geological thermometer prevents precise elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization.INTRODUCTIONRecent phase equilibrium investigations of metal-sulphur systems at the Geophysical Laboratory, Washington, D.C. provide valuable information on the stability relations of a number of important sulphide minerals. This data, when applied to natural ore deposits, may be expected to clarify two special problems which confront the ore petrologist seeking to interpret observed data in terms of a particular physical and chemical environment of ore deposition. These two problems are the sequence of formation of sulphide minerals (commonly designated the paragenetic sequence) and an elucidation of the range of temperatures and pressures which existed during crystallization. The object of this paper is to make such an interpretation of the copper mineralization of the Mt. The Sovereign, Jubilee, Scotia and Jasper Creek prospects occur in an area of ~3.0 km by 2.5 km (~7.5 km2) in the Hauraki goldfield. The prospects are hosted by andesitic to dacitic flows, autoclastic breccias and localised pyroclastic and air fall deposits. Jubilee and Sovereign prospects lie along the northern and southern parts of the Waitekauri Fault, respectively, whereas Scotia is located ~1 km to the E, and Jasper Creek a further ~1.2 km to the ENE. Wall rocks are typically intensely altered, although the degree of alteration becomes more variable east of Scotia and at Jasper Creek. Alteration minerals include quartz, adularia, albite, chlorite, pyrite, illite, interstratified illite-smectite, smectite and calcite. Several of these minerals have distributions that show distinct zonation with adularia most abundant at Sovereign and Jasper Creek, but restricted to shallow levels at Scotia. Illite occurs throughout Sovereign and Jubilee plus the western margin of Scotia where it grades into interstratified illite-smectite; smectite predominates at Jasper Creek. Veins are uncommon and typically narrow, but show distinct zonations. Quartz veins are more abundant at Sovereign and Jubilee, whereas calcite veins are more abundant at Scotia and Jasper Creek. Laumontite veins occur at Scotia, and rare clinoptilolite, mordenite and stilbite veinlets with calcite occur at Jasper Creek. Fluid inclusion in quartz and calcite homogenised between 141¦ to 272¦C and trapped a dilute solution with an apparent salinity of less than 2.6 weight percent NaCl equivalent. Homogenisation temperatures are hottest at Sovereign (average 241¦C) and Jubilee (average 239¦C), cooler at Scotia (average 204¦C) and coolest at Jasper Creek (average 162¦C). Calculated paleowater table elevations suggest the water table was 680 m to 750 m above sea level at Sovereign and Jubilee, 450 m at Scotia and 225 m at Jasper Creek. The current data suggest three scenarios that can explain why Sovereign and Jubilee are deep and hot, whereas Jasper Creek is cool, shallow and marginal; 1.   some or all of the prospects may represent separate overlapping hydrothermal system, 2.   a high-relief hydrothermal system on the side of volcano with an inclined water table and outflow towards Jasper Creek, and 3.   a low-relief hydrothermal system that has been either tilted or block faulted with greatest uplift and erosion to the west.

Holla has given a good background to the various methods of subsidence control in the coalfields around Sydney.The present writer notes that in many cases, especially with wide longwall panels, there is not the flexibility to alter the mine layout as there is to some degree with the various pillar extraction methods. For this reason it may not be possible to plan the workings to minimise subsidence and some damage to structures may occur. The cost of repair or the cost of subsidence provisions to minimise damage may be small in relation to the tonnages of coal which would otherwise have to be sterilised. One method of subsidence control which has been in use in the Newcastle area since 1970 is the panel and pillar layout (partial extraction layouts with stable pillars). An extracted panel width of 0.6 times the depth of cover resulted in a maximum subsidence of 115 mm for an extracted seam thickness of 2.2 m.As Holla points out, the extracted panel widths in relation to th depth of cover depend on the particular geological setting. His Fig. 3 shows that the subsidence over a panel width of 0.3 times the cover depth in the Southern Coalfield is the same as over a panel width of 0.55 to 0.6 times the cover depth in the Northern Coalfield.Selective pillar extraction and longwall mining can both be used in the panel and pillar layout. Holla's Figs 2 and 3 are used to estimate the maximum subsidence over an extracted panel of known geometry. Maximum subsidence is related to seam thickness. What provision is made for a reduction in subsidence due to the coal which remains behind in a pillar extraction panel if the pillar recovery is poor? The writer suggests that an effective seam height could be used, based on the actual mining height reduced by a factor to account for the percentage recovery of coal from an extracted panel.

In presenting this paper may I preface my remarks by recognizing the presence here to-day of the many delegates from the overseas mining communities throughout the world. That is to say - those delegates not representative of Companies resident in Australia. This does not mean that my comments following are directed solely to the Australian exporter - far from it. The Company which I represent is internationally based. The experiences we have had in dealing and negotiating with our good friends the mineral cargo shippers vary very little in any operational area. However for the purposes of this exercise this address is based on some of our experiences within the Australian trade scene with the emphasis on the fact that we believe it has application to all trading areas.

This paper reviews the gold mining history and recent exploration activities on a number of beaches in the Catlins area of coastal South Otago. Past mining history and recent sampling indicate the presence of economically significant concentrations of placer gold, as well as anomalous PGM, and various heavy mineral species. A local source for this placer mineralisation is considered a strong possibility, along with a contribution from the Waiau River catchment via longshore drift. Blacksand beds in Jurassic sandstones of the Southland Synclinorium may represent this local source of mineralisation on the modern beaches. The possibility of placer mineralisation extending onto the inner continental shelf is also considered. Further exploratory work is justified, both for in situ Jurassic blacksand deposits, and to delineate mineralisation in the modern beach and inner shelf environment.

This paper discusses the progress of the Deep Mill Level Zone (DMLZ) mine from the pre-feasibility study completed in 2005, through commencement of development access in 2008, completion of the feasibility in 2010 and cave initiation in late 2015. This fourth lift of caving in the East Ertsberg Skarn System (EESS) is located 500 m below the currently producing Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) mine and represents approximately half a billion tonnes of ore and around 1900 planned drawpoints, scheduled to be mined at a peak of 80 000 t/d.The paper reviews the mine design, access requirements, planned footprint sequence and major fixed facility installations such as ventilation, oreflow and shops. Percolation irrigation of low-grade quartz feldspar porphyry ore with pH 2.0 H2SO4 at 510 litres/m2/day using particle sizes 1.7 - 6.7 mm in columns measuring 5 cm dia × 126 cm long was used to study effects of interrupted irrigation ('rest' periods) on metal ion release and leaching bacteria. Copper tenors increased approximately 16 fold and bacterial iron oxidation activity three fold following a 14 day 'rest'. A linear relationship between copper tenor and bacterial activity demonstrated that this experimental system was effective for quantitative studies of bacterial leaching in ore colums.

FOR many years past it has been the practice at the Bairnsdale School of Mines to treat any parcels of auriferous concentrates sent in from the surrounding district by roasting them in a handworked reverberatory, and then chlorinating or cyaniding the product. According to Donald CIark, who has done a large amount of work on these ores, the results obtained were fairly satisfactory extractions of over 90 per cent being claimed. With some modifications, the method has been very generally adopted, not only in Gippsland but throughout Victoria. It is, however, difficult to get exact information as to the extractions actually obtained, and unfortunately no records of working results have been kept at the Bairnsdale School of Mines.Having treated several lots of ore by this method during 1907 and 1908 with unsatisfactory results, the writers thought it desirable to make a detailed investigation on some particular ore, both in the laboratory and on a working scale. The ore selectedwas a parcel of low-grade concentrates from Stirling, a small mining field situated about forty miles to the east of Bairnsdale. This ore was chosen chiefly on account of the heavy and inexplicable volatilization loss which took place even on roasting with the greatest care; the loss amounting to between 10 and 15 per cent. William Frederick McBryde Broun, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines, was employed on the staff of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company for some years prior to 1912, and will perhaps be remembered by some of those who attended the Mount Morgan meeting of the Institute in 1910, as an Associate Member present on that occasion. He severed his connection with the Mount Morgan Company in 1912, and was returning to England via the East Indies, when he contracted typhoid atSingapore and died at Colombo.Years later some old papers were being turned out in the office where he had worked, when a set of M.S. notes in his unmistakeable handwriting came to light. On examination these appeared to be the rough draft of a paper he must have beenpreparing for the local branch of the Institute, which he had not been able to complete. The notes were very rough. Apparently it was the author's intention to fill in numerous gaps with extracts from sundry published articles on Cornish mining; theextracts were missing and only the written portions linking them together were there. They give a sketch of Cornish mining practice which those who wish may supplement (as the author would have done) from Le Neve Foster and other well-knownsources. The magnesium lead alloys give rise to an inter-metallic compound of the composition Mg2Pb(2) and it has some remarkable properties. It is known to disintegrate on standing in the atmosphere and it confers this property also on lead alloys in which it occurs. In this case study we compare the sampling quality of diamond drilling (DD) and reverse circulation (RC) drilling at the high sulfidation Purnama gold–silver (Au-Ag) deposit located in northern Sumatra, Indonesia.There was a systematic bias of 23 per cent gold metal under-call in the diamond drilling based Ore Reserve estimate compared to the mill reconciliation over three years of production. The RC based Grade Control data and mill production data were in much closer accord. Investigation led to quantification of the significantly reduced sampling imprecision (or improved precision) of RC drilling samples relative to diamond drilling samples and the determination of a grade bias between the drill types caused by sample volume and metal distribution in the mineralisation. An infill RC drilling program was undertaken to improve data density across the pit for inclusion in the Mineral Resource estimate. This subsequently increased Au metal in the estimate by 16 per cent.The sampling imprecision of primary diamond drill sampling is rarely tested. Duplicate sampling can be used to quantify sampling imprecision at each stage of subsampling. In diamond drilling it is tested at the primary sampling stage via second half core sampling, while RC sampling is tested with field duplicate sampling at the rig. Duplicate data can be compared in a number of ways to determine imprecision including Thompson-Howarth plots which quantify imprecision to allow comparison between different methods and protocols.
