Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically bigger host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

Tertiary volcanic rocks make up a significant proportion of the surficial cover rocks of New Zealand, especially in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Industrial minerals that are associated with or derived from the volcanic rocks include: amorphous silica, allophane, bentonite, diatomite, ignimbrite building stone, illite clays, halloysite clay, obsidian, perlite, pumice, sulphur, titanomagnetite ironsand and zeolite. Of these: bentonite, ignimbrite building stone, perlite, pumice and titanomagnetite ironsand have been mined and processed for 20 to 30 years, but many of the others require further characterisation of the resource and/or development of markets.   We have compiled interim mineral deposit models for halloysite clays in rhyolite and for zeolites in altered vitric tuffs. These models include geological and mineralogical attributes, which are linked to the underlying volcanic and geothermal processes that have produced the minerals and their source volcanic rocks. Halloysite clay deposits at Matauri Bay (Northland) have formed from hydrothermal alteration and weathering of rhyolite. Clinoptilolite + mordenite zeolite deposits in the Ngakuru area (Rotorua district) have formed from hydrothermal alteration of volcanic glass in lacustrine sediments and ignimbrite. Further refinement and application of these models will result in a better understanding of the mineralogy, localisation and origin of the deposits, with consequent applications in exploration and resource assessments.

Low displacement fault zones often comprise a mesh of interlinked faults, extensional-shear and purely extensional vein fractures. Hydrothermal mineralisation localised around such structures testifies to their importance as conduits for fluid flow. Mesh structures are most commonly developed in situations approximating bulk pure shear but predominantly simple shear meshes also occur. They appear to develop through the infiltration of pressurised fluids into a heterogeneous rock mass with varying material properties. In some circumstances, mesh formation appears to be a precursor to the development of major through going faults. Mesh formation generally involves hydrofracturing (Pf > s3, at least locally) and the condition Pf ~ s3 to be maintained for the mesh to remain a high permeability conduit, requiring fluid over pressuring at other than shallow depths in extensional-transtensional regimes. The volumetric character of earthquake swarm activity appears to result from the passage of hydrothermal fluids through mesh structures, representing a form of distributed fault-valve action along suprahydrostatic hydraulic gradients arising from magmatic intrusion, compaction overpressuring, metamorphic dewatering, etc. Fluid redistribution in the crust is influenced by maximum hydraulic gradient (not necessarily vertical), by existing permeability anisotropy arising from bedding and other forms of crustal layering, and by structural permeability developed under the prevailing stress field. Strong directional permeability develops in the s2 direction, parallel to fault-fracture intersections within the mesh and orthogonal to fault slip vectors. In particular tectonic settings, stress-controlled permeability allows strongly focused flow through fault-fracture meshes with high potential for mineralisation. Favoured localities for mesh development include short-lived link structures along large-displacement fault zones such as dilational jogs, lateral ramps, and transfer faults.

During the meeting of the Institute last year at Port Pirie, the opportunity was taken to sample the lead bullion coming from the blast furnace and various stages during the refining process. Also, in the desilverising section, the upper zinc rich phase was sampled as the silver content built up and in the cupellation operation a series of samples was taken as the silver content of the bullion increased. In these two cases, the samples were taken under the supervision of a member of the staff of the Broken Hill AssociatedSmelters.In the following account of the microstructure of the samples taken, only the main phases present have received attention. In this connection deduction from phase diagrams of binary alloys has been used in conjunction with the assays carried out on duplicate samples taken at the same time as those for micro examination.

To achieve an efficient separation in the flotation process, valuable particles need to be selectively segregated from the gangue while utilising a minimum number of flotation stages. TodayÆs existing flotation technologies are effective for fine particle size classes; however, limitations due to particle buoyancy and bubble-particle detachment restrict the effectiveness of traditional flotation approaches on coarser particles. As a result, flotation circuits are generally configured to process only fine particle size classes in order to maximise recovery in the primary stages. Eriez has invented a novel flotation technology, the HydroFloat, which overcomes these limitations by carrying-out flotation in a dense, fluidised-bed medium allowing for the recovery of coarse particles (>0.250 mm). Over the last 15 years, this technology has been successfully applied to industrial minerals with several full-scale units installed to recover particles up to and exceeding 3 mm diameter in primary flotation circuits. This paper includes discussions on the history of this technology, process theory, existing applications, and a review of recent sulphide-based laboratory test work conducted for Newcrest mining and others. This modern plant was installed with the object of treating all oxide ore and payable dump material by the cyanide process.The plant is located on a ridge on the eastern side of Linda Gully. The mill -site has a slope to the south of 1 in 4.The new plant is of steel and concrete construction and was specially designed to suit the climatic conditions which exist at Mount Morgan.THE COARSE CRUSHING PLANTThe ore received from the, mine is dumped into a 600-ton steel bin which is commanded by a 3 ft. 6 in. gauge railway,The mine ore is conveyed by steam locomotives in rakes of five self-dumping 7-ton railroad cars. The dump material is mostly loaded by bull-dozers and conveyed to the binsin large motor lorries. Located on the top of the bin is a heavy railroad grizzly having 12-in openings through which all ore must pass.The flow of ore from this steel bin is controlled by a No. 7D 3-speed Ross chain feeder. It should be mentioned here that, although the bottom of the steel bin is inclined at an angle of 45°, it has been found, owing to the clayey nature of the oxide ore, that the live capacity of the bin is only about 50% of the total capacity.

THERE are certain facts that the mining industry in Australia is faced with at the present moment which may be accepted as axioms. The industry is at a low ebb, as evidenced by statistics. Metals form the basis of all modern industries, and are necessaryfor the welfare of Australia. Mining is a wasting asset. Every ton of ore extracted is one ton less which c.annot be made good, and it should be our duty to get as much profit froin that ore as possible, otherwise there is a permanent loss to the country.The metal market cannot be controlled by Australia; it is more or less an international matter. Australia has not been thoroughly prospected. There are no mines being developed that are likely to replace those which are being depleted.Our mining engineers are as capable as those in other parts of the world, and have made good where they have been given a chance. There is no one cause for the present depression; there are several, more or less, interwoven. Of course, the war has had an adverse effect, but that has only dislocated things temporarily; it upset our markets, influenced the price of metals, and affected the labour market and cost of stores. Labour troubles made their appearance before the wave of unrest swept over the world. The cause of labour discontent must be investigated, and if possible removed. As each industry has .its·own problems, miners must inquire into their special problems, as there is no sovereign remedy that will suit all cases.It is obvious that we cannot mine ore if we do not know where it is; therefore, the first thing is to discover workable deposits.

The recent paper by Bain (1981) contains an unfortunate, and potentially misleading typographic error. On page 9, second paragraph, Bain states that, "some samples of drill core from the (Candlow) Formation ... contain up to 90 ppm gold and 2 000 ppm arsenic". The gold value should read 90 ppb. In fact, in the original version of the paper (Bain, 1980), the gold value quoted was actually 60 ppb.Bain also refers briefly to some geochemical data which is attributed to me, and which I feel require some clarification.In addition, the paper contains some factual errors relating to the occurrence of carbonate and potential host rocks to Carlin-type gold deposits in the Candlow Formation.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Thomson Orogen is a large but poorly understood element of Queensland geology. Extensive cover conceals the Thomson Orogen at depth, thus limiting studies to a small number of surface exposures. Previous studies of the northern Thomson Orogen have been restricted to the largest of these exposures in the Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Less extensive exposures, including Mt McLaren in east-central Queensland, are largely overlooked and poorly documented. Fieldwork suggests that Mt McLaren is a west-tilted fault block of Thomson Orogen metasediments that are at least 2200 m thick. The substantial thickness of these sediments (which we have named the Mt McLaren Formation) and the consistent shallow marine facies throughout the block suggest deposition in an actively subsiding basin. Initial dating of detrital zircons places deposition of the Mt McLaren Formation in the Late Cambrian to Early Ordovician, allowing correlations with formations of similar composition and age in the nearby Anakie Inlier and Charters Towers Province. Both of these areas have a long history of mining and exploration for gold and base metals, suggesting that correlation of basement sequences across these areas could be beneficial for exploration models of the Thomson Orogen as well as for tectonic models of eastern Australia.CITATION:Lee, M, Verdel, C, Welsh, K and Oorloff, A, 2015. A process was developed to produce electrolytic manganese dioxide, suitable for use in high quality dry cells, from Risdon anode mud. ImpurItIes present In the anode mud were removed prior to the electrolysis which was performed from a manganese sulphate bath using the following conditions.Temp. 95°CH2S04 50-55 g/l.Mn2+ 55-60 g/l.Anode c.d. 10·0 A/sq. ft.Operation under these conditions yielded current efficiency and power consumption figures of 95 per cent and 0·8 kWh/lb respectively. The product conformed to battery manufacturers' specifications as regards physical and chemical properties and performed satisfactorily in a battery testing programme.

Magnesite-rich and dolomite-rich ores from the Savage River region of Tasmania are being considered as potential feed material for a commercial process for production of magnesia.Two selected samples have been characterized by chemical analysis, X-ray diffraction, and differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis. The materials differ in calcination behaviour, with magnesite decomposing at a significantly lower temperature than dolomite. Calcination conditions have a marked effect on the rate and percentage of magnesium dissolved as the bicarbonate when slurries of the calcine are leached with carbon dioxide. From a process point of view, the feed should have the highest possible magnesite/dolomite ratio, while the optimum calcination conditions are determined by the behaviour of the magnesite component of the feed.From batch calcination tests, it is apparent that the optimum calcination conditions for magnesite-rich ore are a temperature in the vicinity of 700°C and a calcination time of one hour.

Collecting the clay fraction of active stream sediment from a flowing stream for geochemical analysis i a difficult process. One either takes a sample of dry fine-grained sediment from the stream bank (dry weather and dry sample are uncommon in parts of New Zealand and Tasmania), or dredges up a sample of sand and mud out of the stream.The latter method produces a soggy ample bag full of mud and sand, with varying amounts of gravel, depending on the size of the stream. The water can be filtered from such a sample by means of a Buchner filter funnel, but is difficult to obtain a vacuum in the bush. This problem can be solved by using a small hand- queeze bellows such as used in priming petrol pumps on outboard petrol motors. The common laboratory hand bellows is not powerful enough.A 70 mm diameter two-piece polythene Buchner filter funnel (Fig. 1) can be used. A length of rubber tubing is fitted around the inlet valve of the hand bellows and this valve is then jammed into the pipe at the bottom of the filter funnel (the polythene pipe may be trimmed with a knife to fit over the inlet valve of the bellows). The vacuum is generated and maintained by squeezing the hand bellows.The technique of collecting a sample of the clay fraction is to dredge a sample of the fine-grained active stream sediment out of the stream with a container, such as a plastic mug. The sample is agitated to get the clay fraction into suspension and the muddy suspension is then decanted into the Buchner funnel. The desired clay fraction is obtained as a thin film on the filter paper.If the "fines" are also required, a filter of nylon bolting cloth (stretched across the mouth of a short length of 80 mm diameter polythene pipe and attached by rubber bands or a concentric polythene pipe) can be placed over the mouth of the Buchner funnel and the whole sample of stream sediment...

Bio-Oxidation of Arsenic and Stibium Bearing Gold Ores Bio-oxidation of arsenic and stibium bearing gold ores with acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied. The preoxidation results show that the best bio-oxidation technical parameters are the initial pH in the range of 1.8 ~ 2.0, particle sizes under 0.074 mm, temperature in the range of 25¦C ~ 30¦C and rotating speed of the orbital incubator in 100 rpm ~ 160 rpm. The leaching results show that If the ore, of which contain 10.37 per cent arsenic and 36.81 per cent stibium, is not bio-oxidised, gold leaching is only about 41 per cent, after 8 days oxidised, the result is about 76.55 per cent, which improved about 35.62 points. The relationship between gold leaching and arsenic oxidation is direct proportion, furthermore, it needs only partly oxidise and higher gold leaching could be get, for example, gold leaching is over 90 per cent when asenic oxidation is 60 per cent. The results will provide theoretical and technological supports of bio-oxidation arsenopyrite for pretreating refractory gold ores.

In eastern China, most of the copper skarn deposits occur in folded troughs which are controlled by the EW-trending faulted fold systems (the Pal-Asian geotectonic domain), and the NNE-trending rift or fault zones (the Marginal-Pacific geotectonic domain), particularly the later. From the north to the south, there are four troughs hosting the main copper skarn deposits in eastern China: the Yanliao Trough, the Yangzi River Trough, The Qiantang-Yuanshui Trough and the Zichen Trough. There are more than 30 copper skarn deposits in eastern China, and ore reserves of each deposit are between 30 to 100 Mt with average grades over 1% Cu.    Most of the large copper skarn deposit-related intrusions are Mesozoic in age (170 to 100 Ma) and were emplaced during the Yanshanian Movement. Outwards from the intrusion bodies, both the skarn alteration and mineralisation show certain patterns of zonation. Mineral assemblages indicate a relatively high oxidisation state during metasomatic alteration and mineralisation. Sulphur isotopic work indicates that most d34S values of the sulphides are between ~4 to 3ë suggesting a common magmatic sulphur source. Fluid inclusion and oxygen isotopic studies suggest that early-stage fluid shows magma-related fluid characteristics although meteoric water was involved during late-stage alteration.

CENTRAL mine ore consists mainly of galena and marmatite in a siliceous and rhodonitic gangue, the average assay values being approximately 11.5 oz. per ton Ag, 14.5% Pb, 14.5% Zn, 1.3% Ox Pb, 0.3% Ox Zn.Owing to the 1923 fire in the underground workings, much of the ore now being mined has been subjected to a certain amount of oxidation, as shown by the oxidised values above.This factor is of great importance from a flotation point of view, as a sulphide surface which has been subjected to the influence of oxidation is not as amenable to flotation concentration as a fresh sulphide surface. The importance of this factor is increased when a differential flotation is to be made, and, as in the case of Central mine ore, the sulphide, which is to be floated first, has been oxidised...

I find that during the short time I have been in this district, the majority of boilers are, and have been, receiving very bad usage owing to the difficulties which they have to contend against, viz., oil and bad water. Oil on the heating surface of a boiler is of a highly dangerous nature inasmuch as it allows the surface to become overheated, owing to the water not coming into direct contact with the plates, and it naturally follows that when the crown sheets of a flue or firebox become overheated, you lose a considerable amount of the strength of the plate, and the flue or crown comes down. Referring to the oil question, I find that too much care cannot or exercised on the part of engine drivers in order to minimise as much as possible the internal lubrication of the various engines under their control. For I consider that it is here that the most of the trouble is caused. My reasons for stating such to be the case, are:-That the majority of enginedrivers before coming to this field have been used to driving engines that have been exhausting into the atmosphere, and probably they have been taught that it is far better to use a little extra lubrication than to have a hot bearing. So far so good. But one thing that must not be overlooked is that on these fields the conditions are altered in this respect, as the majority of engines in this district are not exhausting into the atmosphere, but are condensing their exhaust steam and using the water so condensed for feed purposes.

The appropriate design of liners continues to be an issue on many mills worldwide. Loss of milling capacity especially at liner change, uneven wear lives along the mill, substantial scrap on worn liners, excess mill down-time, undesirably short and unreliable wear lives are all common issues. This paper presents a designed approach to liner optimisation that follows a logical path of initial design and step-wise improvements based on liner wear monitoring. The target is to have a good liner design from start-up, then tune the profiles, heights and thicknesses based on wear monitoring. This is conducted as a team of liner specialist, site personnel and liner supplier. The application to the Pustynnoye SAG mill of JSC Altynalmas in Kazakhstan is presented.
