IN OPENING the symposium under the auspices of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, I wish to call to your attention the following, among other subjects, which it is hoped may receive proper attention: 1. The recording of as accurate an appraisal of the oil possibilities of the various countries as is possible, with information as to the immediate availability of their supply. 2. The development of further support for the move-ment to bring about active cooperation among Ameri-can oil companies in their foreign exploration and development work. 3. The furtherance of the efforts of the industry in securing governmental assistance in foreign oil develop-ment: (a) along the lines of a modification of our domestic oil policy, so that we can go to foreign coun-tries and consistently ask fair treatment as to royalties and bonuses; (b) by a closer cooperation between the State and Commerce Departments and the oil industry. 4. The calling of attention to the unjustifiably drastic action of the price-fixing group of the oil industry during the last year or so, with the hope that it will use gentler methods in the future. None of these subjects are new, and some of them have been discussed before various organizations for years. Our justification for again bringing them forward is the hope that by everlastingly harping on them the industry, the Government, and the people who shape the destinies of this country may some time, some how, realize their importance and take effective constructive action.

The art of crushing ores and other materials by means of rolls is a comparatively recent one. While the first record of rolls using iron crushing-surfaces dates hack to the year 1806, when they were employed in Cornwall, their principal developmcnt has taken place during the past 30 years. To Stephen R. Erom belongs the credit of the pioneer in introducing the belted high-speed roll, which has had its origin and a marked development in this country. His notable contrib'ution to the art was in the use of a single bed-plate or frame supporting the roll-shafts, and to which levers holding the mova, ble roll-bearings were pivoted. He also made use of steel tension-rods to support the crushing-strains, and of hammered-steel tires for the crushing-surfaces. These changes brought the design of crushing-rolls to a high level. Following closely thereon, about 1885, W. R. Eckart conceived the idea of the swivel or ball-and-socket support for the roll-shaft bearings. This is an excellent mechanical conception, especially for bearings held against a spring pressure, and while it may not be necessary for all types of rolls, yet it has been quite generally adopted by other roll-designers, and illustrates the refinement which roll-construction has now reached. Other engineers, as, for example, Argall, Vezin, Roger, and Sturtevant, to mention only a few among many, have also given the closest attention to the various details of rolls, such as the frame, springe, bearings, and shafts, and have developed many novel and original designs. There are two general classes of problems in connection with electric furnaces. First, those relating to the best utilization of the electrical power inside the furnace; second, those connected with the bringing of the electrical power to the point where it is to be utilized. Referring particularly to the latter class of problems, many calculations have been made, covering a wide variety of furnaces, to check the electrical capacity and power factor found from test. The following analysis, made for the purpose of determining the maximum capacity and approximate performance of a new furnace, to operate at 160 volts on a 60-cycle circuit, may be of interest. The first characteristic necessary to determine is the inductance, since this is the factor that limits the amount of power which can be put into the furnace. Inductance is calculated from the dimensions of the furnace, according to formulas of the U. S. Bureau of Standardsll as follows. Formula 99, for mutual inductance, is: M = 2l [log 2l/d-1 +d/l] Formula 103, for self-inductance, is: Both of these formulas are approximations which are nearly correct when 1 is great compared to d or R. 1 = length of circuit, in centimeters, d = separation between the conductors, in centimeters, R = geometric mean radius of conductors. For a circular tube, R = the radius of the circle. For a solid circular conductor, R = 0.7788 X the radius of the conductor. For a rectangular conductor, R = 0.2235 X (a + b), a being the length, and b being the width of the rectangle. When the first batch of refined copper ingots was cast at Mantos Blancos in January 1961, eight years of exploration, development and metallurgical pioneering by Mauricio Hochschild & Co. had come to a successful conclusion. This Chilean copper deposit, located in the Atacama Desert 30 miles from Antofagasta, is now producing approximately 20,000 tons of copper per year. The Mantos Blancos deposit has been known since 1912 and various attempts had been made to work the high-grade zones before the present operation was started. The major drawback of the ore to any previous development was its chloride content which varies between 0.4% and 1.5% C1. Although the chloride ruled out the conventional leaching-electrolysis scheme, it did lend itself to the process of precipitating the copper as cuprous chloride.

In 1827, chromite was discovered near Baltimore by Isaac Tyson, Jr., who initiated the mining of chrome ore an:! later (1845) .the manufacture of chromium compounds in this country. From 1828 to about 1860 the United States, supplanting Russia, supplied chromite for most of the world. Chrome deposits were found also in California, and the Tyson Company shipped ore to Philadelphia by way of Cape Horn. In 1848, J. Lawrence Smith, an American in the employ of the Porte, discovered large bodies of chromite in Asia Minor. They were developed in 1865 and became the chief source of the world's supply for a number of years. The discovery of the large high-grade bodies in New Caledonia, and later in Rhodesia, with other foreign sources, gives at present an abundant supply for all demands. For a number of years before the great war, the United States produced only a few hundred tons of chromite annually, for local use, but during the war the demand for domestic ore resulted in a production of more than 82,000 long tons of crude ore in 1918, and it was demonstrated that the United States has reserve deposits equal to a war demand of several years' duration. Now that the war is over, the country is conserving its domestic supplies by employing higher-grade but cheaper ore from foreign countries. INTRODUCTION During the Bicentennial Year in the United States of America, recognition should be given to the fact that 20 years ago the first large-scale commercial pelletizing plant was started and attained rated capacity. This was the beginning of a new industry. Twenty years ago the total production of pellets was principally from pilot plant facilities and totaled in the thousands of tons per year. At the present time the world production is slightly in excess of 280 million tons per year. This truly is a tremendous growth for any industry. Such a production growth obviously is accompanied by a similar growth pattern in the development of process, equipment, and facilities. During the growth and development period, different materials became more adaptable for processing. For example, initially the pelletizing of iron ores revolved around the magnetite concentrates where the heat of reaction constituted a very important part of the process fuel. During this growth period, specular hematite, earthy hematite, mixtures of hematite and magnetite, and even non-ferrous type materials were pelletized, a function previously thought not practical. The demand for the use of pellets has also broadened their concepts. At first they were made to replace the high-grade iron ores used in blast furnaces. Nowadays, not only have they replaced iron units, but they have had a major influence on the design of larger blast furnaces and have contributed to production rates in excess of 10 000 tons per day from a single furnace. They have also been used in the manufacture of steel, principally for coolants in the BOF practice. More recently, with the improved beneficiation techniques that have been developed over the same period of time, pellets have been used for the direct reduction process and can be used directly

Iron ores occur in such a wide variety of forms that nearly every kind of prospecting, geological knowledge, and geophysical technique has some application in the search for them. The type of orebody that is considered desirable depends on political and economic considerations, on transportation and markets, on the characteristics of the orebody, on the metallurgy of the ore, and on its comparison with other available ores. In North America, materials that can be efficiently processed into high grade concentrates and pellets are now the object of most exploration work. These are usually shallow, relatively unoxidized, metamorphosed iron formations that are particularly suitable for geophysical methods of exploration. Magnetic surveys are used for the direct discovery of new orebodies, for mapping stratigraphy and structure, and at times to locate oxidized zones in magnetic iron formation. Gravity mapping provides supplementary information, indicates gross tonnages, is useful in regional studies, and can discover non-magnetic orebodies. Electrical methods have not been fully exploited but self-potential, resistivity, applied potential, electromagnetic and perhaps induced polarization surveys all have restricted but highly useful applications. The use of all geophysical techniques promises to increase as the number of exposed easily discoverable orebodies decreases. A high consumption of steel, and consequently of iron ore is the chief characteristic of an industrial society and this consumption has been increasing at an average rate of about 35% every ten years for the past century. To supply this demand, iron ores and iron bearing materials in a wide variety of forms have been exploited on every inhabited continent and in nearly every country. THE use of stone as a building material in relatively large blocks is recorded in ancient historical records but only within the past 200 years has broken stone in small sizes begun to have extensive use, principally in highway construction. Tresaguet, in 1764, describing his method for highway construction in France, required the top surface to be built of stone about the size of a walnut, broken by the use of a hammer. It is said that the Romans, in the top layer of their rather massive roads, used large stones bonded together with lime mortar and bedded in small stones mixed with mortar. Much of the early macadam as built by McAdam around 1815 in England was made with hand-sledged broken stone. In 1858, the use of crushed or broken stone received a great impetus from the invention in that year by Eli Whitney Blake of what is said to be the world's first stone crusher. As a consequence of that invention, stone could be crushed to small sizes with considerable ease and, as a natural result, the use of crushed stone in macadam roads and as railroad ballast increased at a great rate. Also, as portland cement came into use, machine-produced crushed stone furnished readily available aggregate. Rapidly, other uses developed, such as for fluxstone in the production of pig iron and for other metallurgical operations and chemical utilizations. These utilizations made for the rapid growth of the crushed-stone industry and this growth is still proceeding with the growth of population and the development of new uses, notably the employment of limestone for the improvement of soils for agricultural purposes. The industries of which the production of crushed stone is a part have a tonnage second only to that of mineral fuel in the mineral industries of this country.

IN these days of the almost exclusive use of byproduct coke as the blast-furnace fuel in this country, it may seem out of place, and smacking too much of reminiscing, to say anything about the use of anthracite coal for blast-furnace fuel. Viewed in the light of present day research and of developments in alloy steel, some observations seem appropriate regarding this raw material that played such an important part in the development of the iron and steel industry during 50 years of the past century. The research work of that period, in which the whole iron and steel industry was revolutionized, passing from wrought iron to steel and from charcoal to three new mineral fuels for blast furnaces, was done chiefly in the full-sized plants of that day; and it was done largely by the ironmasters themselves. The laboratory had not become a part of the ironworks, and scientific instruments were lacking around the blast furnaces; "rule o' thumb" and erroneous theories prevailed-and have not yet all been eliminated. The recent interest in meteoric iron in connection with nickel steels and other alloys proves that it is worth while to search for the reasons for excellence and the causes for failures in the metallurgy of bygone days. Turner1 gives the reasons why the blast furnace of Dr. F. W. Geissenhainer on Silver Creek, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, about 10 miles northeast of Pottsville, was operated successfully with anthracite2 in August and September, 1836, and why several other attempts failed. It has taken a long time for us to find out that there are great differences in the behavior of anthracites from the several parts of the anthracite region, as well as differences in coking coals from the bituminous fields.

INTEREST in the reserves of phosphate rock in the United States and their proper conservation has recently been aroused by hearings held in different parts of the country by the "Joint Committee to investigate the adequacy and use of phosphate resources of the United States." This committee was appointed within a few days after a Presidential message to Congress on the same subject, dated May 20, 1938, and began to function almost immediately. Hearings were held in Washington, D. C., Pocatello, Ida., Wilson Dam, Ala., Knoxville, Tenn., and Lake-land, Fla. The resulting testimony, when published, comprised a volume of 1182 pages.1 At the earlier hearings held in Washington and Idaho the seeming disparity between the great reserves of the West and the smaller reserves in the East led to some suggestions as to the desirability of curtailing or even prohibiting the exportation of phosphate rock so that eastern pro-ducers, becoming alarmed, cooperated in making available for the use of the committee information hitherto closely guarded. This informa-tion has provided an opportunity for new studies by official agencies, for a restatement of the reserves of Florida and Tennessee, and for some modification of figures for the Western States. The writer, representing the Federal Geological Survey, was given free access to the Florida material and has prepared for publication a report,2 some features of which are summarized in this paper. The Tennessee material was studied by Dr. G. I. Whitlatch,3 of the Tennessee Division of Geology. Prof. J. Stewart Williams,4 of the Utah State Agricultural College at Logan, has published a recent study of the phosphate resources of Utah and the writer has given some further study to reserves of western phosphate from the viewpoint of including material of lower grade than that hitherto considered.

By the use of radiochemical methods for the study of the gas-liquid equilibria at low temperature, and for the determination of the sulfur contents of metal beads which had been equilibrated with H2S/H2 mixtures of known sulfur potential, it has been possible to obtain the liquid solubility and the free energy of solution of sulfur in liquid tin and lead at temperatures between 500°and 680°C. THE gas-liquid equilibrium method has proved in the past to be most successful in the determination of the thermodynamic behavior of dilute solutions of sulfur in liquid metals.1,2 One of the basic requirements for success with this method is that the volatility of both the metal and its lowest sulfide should be small, otherwise sulfide will be deposited at the cool end of the furnace, where it may react with the outgoing gases to form either sulfur-rich lowest sulfide or higher sulfides. The resultant value of the apparent equilibrium constant will then be lower than the correct one. This argument applies even at sulfur potentials below that in equilibrium with a separate condensed phase of the lowest sulfide at the reaction temperature, T. The mass of sulfide which is deposited at the cold end of the furnace, and hence the extent to which further reaction occurs with the outgoing gases, depends on the time taken for equilibrium to be reached between metal and gas. Since this will depend principally on the bulk of the metal phase which is used, one should clearly attempt to uie as small metal samples as possible. These considerations are important in the study of dilute solutions of sulfur dissolved in liquid tin and lead which both have moderately high vapor pressures as metals and form volatile sulfides. The limit on the size of the metal samples which may be used is set chiefly by the difficulties of analysis for very small amounts of sulfur. The oxygen or carbon dioxide combustion method, followed by iodimetric determination of the sulfur dioxide which is formed,has been found to be successful for the determination of small amounts of sulfur in copper, iron, cobalt and nickel.4 This method was unsatisfactory for sulfur dissolved in tin and lead, mainly because the sulfur dioxide was to some extent absorbed by the copious tin or lead oxide deposits which were formed on the walls of the combustion tube. Furthermore some of the sulfur was found to segregate on the surface of the beads as flaky sulfide crystals which would easily be lost in the transfer of a bead from a boat in the gas equilibration apparatus to one in the combustion apparatus. Oxidation in aqueous media to sulfate ion followed by precipitation as barium sulfate was, therefore, adopted as the analytical procedure. The gas-metal equilibrium experiments were all carried out with radioactive sulfur and thus the analysis involved the counting of barium radiosulfate. Furthermore the use of the radioisotope meant that the approach to the gas-metal equilibrium could be followed continuously by gas counting.' The metal beads were held separately in glass crucibles during equilibration and were transferred from the furnace to the beaker for dissolution in nitric acid still in the crucibles, and thus the possibility of sulfur loss by detachment of the sulfide segregates was eliminated. The temperature range of this investigation was 500° to 680°C. EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND METHOD The apparatus consisted of two furnaces placed in series in a gas recirculation system, Fig. 1. One furnace F1, which was vertical was used to heat the alumina crucible, A, holding six metal beads in separate glass crucibles. The beads weighed between 300 and 700 mg each. The crucible assembly was introduced and removed from the furnace mechanically under a stream of oxygen-free argon. The other furnace, F2, was horizontal and was used to heat a cobalt Co9S8 mixture, held in an alumina boat, and made with radiosulfur containing about 1/2 millicurie per g of sulphur. This mixture, which was finely powdered, was used as a source of known H2S/H2 mixtures6 for a given furnace temperature. The recirculation system also contained a gas re-circulation pump (P), an end window Geiger-Miiller counter (N)—placed downstream of F1 so as to monitor the H2S pressure in the gas leaving this furnace— a sample volume for chemical analysis of the gas phase (G), gas drying tubes (D), filling taps and other standard ancillary equipment. Thermomechanical treatments applied to the maraging steels include a) cold working in the austenitic condition at 650°F, followed by transformation to martensite and aging, b) cold working in the murtensitic condition and aging, and c) cold working in the aged condition with and without subsequent reaging. The strength increases in these steels are very small compared to the increases observed in conventional carbon and alloy steels. The changes that are observed are compatible with the strengthening mechanisms operative during thermomechanical treatment of conventional steels, however. Differences are caused by the absence of a carbide precipitate and the low work-hardening rate in both the solution-treated and the aged conditions. ThE 18 pct Ni maraging steels represent a class of steels which are finding great interest for high-strength applications.1~2 They are essentially carbon-free, and contain 7 to 9 pct Co, 3 to 5 pct Mo, and 0.2 to 0.8 pct Ti. Although austenitic at elevated temperatures, they can be air-cooled to room temperature to form a martensite, which because of the absence of carbon is relatively soft. On subsequent reheating age hardening occurs and strength levels of 250 to 300 ksi yield strength can be attained. These steels appear to be particularly suitable for studying the response to various thermome-chanical treatments for additional reasons other than the obvious one of attempting to improve their already attractive properties. Thermomechanical treatments can be defined as treatments whereby plastic deformation, generally below the recrystal-lization temperature, is introduced into the heat-treatment cycle of a steel in order to improve the properties. With an absence of intermediate transformation products on air cooling the maraging steels have good hardenability and hence can readily be cold-worked in the austenitic condition prior to transformation to martensite. Further, they can be worked in the martensitic condition prior to aging, and even can be deformed in the fully aged condition. Finally, it is of interest to compare their re- sponse to that of the more conventional alloy and carbon steels, where the role of carbides is important in the strength increase by thermomechani-cal treatments. The thermomechanical treatment of conventional steels has been the subject of a recent review.' I) MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The steel used in this investigation was a commercially produced vacuum-melt heat, which had been rolled to 0.090 in. and mill-annealed. The composition of the alloy was as follows: 0.02 C, 0.08 Mn, 0.10 Si, 0.009 P, 0.009 S, 18.96 Ni, 7.34 Co, 5.04 Mo, 0.29 Ti, 0.05 Al, 0.004 B, 0.01 Zr, and 0.05 Ca. Unless otherwise stated the heat treatments used were the standai-d solution treatment at 1500°F for 1 hr, air cool, followed by a 900°F, 3 hr age. In this condition, the material exhibited 232 ksi yield strength and 239 ksi tensile strength. Mechanical properties were determined by Vicker's hardness measurement (20 kg) and by tensile tests on standard 1/2-in.-wide, 2-in.-gage-length sheet tensile specimens. Notch tensile tests were run using the 1-in.-wide NASA type, edge-notched specimen.4 Fracture-toughness determinations were made on 3-in.-wide, center-notched, fatigue-cracked specimens, following the recommendations of the ASTM Committee on Fracture-Toughness Testing.4 An electric-potential technique was used for measuring the crack size at the onset of rapid crack propagation5 which is necessary for calculations of Kc, the critical stress-intensity factor under plane-stress conditions. The critical stress-intensity factor under plane-strain conditions KI, was also calculated, using the stress at which the first observable crack growth occurred. 11) RESULTS A) Cold-Worked in the Austenitic Condition. The reported M, temperature for the 18 pct Ni maraging steel is about 310°F.1 Therefore, a temperature of 650°F was selected as suitable for rolling in the austenitic condition. Specimens were solution-treated at 1500°F for 1 hr, air-cooled to 650°F, and rolled varying percentages from 0 to 60 pct, at 20 pct reduction per pass. Tensile and hardness properties after aging at 900°F for 3 hr are shown in Fig. 1. PUBLIC discussions of mine finance in the tech-nical press have been confined mainly to methods of providing funds for the development of pros-pects or other mining operations which have not reached the stage of productivity. The application of modern financing methods to mines which have behind them a successful record of net earnings has, for some reason, been given scant consideration by mine owners and managers. In a few conspicuous cases, such for example as the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., Chile Copper Co., and one or two others, industrial finance has been applied to mining operations on the scale and after the fashion of other operations. When extensions are needed re-course is usually had, however, to the sale of common stock, with the obvious disadvantage of diluting the holdings of every stockholder of record prior to such financing. In some cases, it has been sought to over-come this disadvantage by issuing stock purchase rights to shareholders of record. If the stockholder is in a position to acquire additional stock, he may then pre-serve his interest intact, otherwise he must suffer a dilution of his holding. If he purchases additional stock he is, from one point of view, paying more for his in-terest than he bargained for when he made his original purchase. In many cases development and equipment are paid for out of surplus or current earnings. It is sometimes most difficult to explain to a manager why he can afford to borrow money when funds are available from a sur-plus account. Nevertheless, industrial enterprises with adequate surplus accounts often finance new construc-tion by the issuance of bonds. Such a procedure enables the company to maintain its surplus intact, and to con-tinue the payment of dividends during a temporary period of unusual expenditures.

New techniques in the magnetite and heavy media beneficiation industries demand more efficient magnetic dispersion and flocculation of the finely ground particles. Demagnetizing coils must produce several major effects, such as improving classification and screening efficiency, decreasing moisture content in filter cake and improving separation selectivity and green pellet properties. Likewise, magnetic flocculators must increase filtering rates and the settling rates of solids, improve magnetite recovery and produce cleaner water. To improve the design of equipment and to conduct tests leading to the optimization of such dispersion and flocculation, a program was initiated at Eriez Magnetics. The major conclusions reached are: 1. Laboratory and plant scale tests conducted on magnetite products show that a demagnetizing force of 450 rms oersteds at 60 cycles for 1/20- second duration will depolarize natural magnetite particles coarser than approximately 10 microns. This has been found satisfactory for most applications. 2. Effective flocculation of magnetite was obtained when a slurry with more than one percent magnetite was exposed for a period of approximately 1/15 second to a 600-gauss field. 3. The cost of demagnetizers (or flocculators) increases rapidly for larger diameter pipes. In order to reduce the cost, narrow rectangular sections are recommended for magnetic flocculators. 4. For minimum operating cost, permanent magnetic flocculators are ideal, chiefly because they do not require any maintenance and have no operating cost. 5. A newly designed electro-demagnetizing coil with high heat dissipation and a nonmetallic core provides high efficiency and long life. 6. To select the correct magnetic flocculator (or demagnetizing coil) the following information is necessary: a. Magnetic product susceptibility b. Magnetic product coercive force c. Percent of magnetic product d. Flow rate e. Viscosity f. Structure of magnetic product

The evaluation of certain reser-voir properties, such as porosity and fluid saturation, from electrical well surveys has been widely accepted in petroleum engineering. Various investigators have established relationships between these properties and certain parameters which affect the response of the electrical log. Among these are the resistivities of the mud, its filtrate, and its filter cake. In 1949, Patnode1 established a relationship between the resistivities of the mud and filtrate. The well logging service companies have contributed relationships for the mud-mud cake resistivities2,3 These have been valuable since it was the practice to measure only resistivity of mud at the well site. During the mid-1940's the industry began drilling wells with oil-emulsion drilling fluids. These were conventional aqueous muds with a dispersed oil phase. Since 1950, oil-emulsion muds have been used on an increasing number of wells each year. However, the practice of measuring only the resistivity of the mud at the well site has continued, and the mud filtrate and mud cake resistivities have been determined by the above-mentioned relationships. Service companies are now equipped to measure all three resistivities at the well site. An investigation was conducted on the resistivities of oil-emulsion muds, mud filtrates, and mud cakes to determine if these values conformed to the relationships for aqueous muds. TYPES OF MUDS Fifty-one oil-emulsion mud samples were prepared in the laboratory following a standard manual' published by a leading mud company. The diesel oil in the samples varied from 5 to 50 per cent, the majority of the samples being in the 10 per cent region. The basic aqueous mud types which were converted to oil-emulsion muds were commercial clay and bentonite muds, low pH and high pH, caustic-quebracho treated muds, and lime treated muds. The emulsions were stabilized by dispersed solids, lignins, lignosulfo-nates, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, or sulfonated petrolatum. It is worthy of note that after a quiescent period of two weeks at room temperature all samples, regardless of emulsifying agent, remained stable. The make-up water for the muds was from the laboratory tap. Resistivities were varied by the addition of table salt to the water. A range of mud resistivities from 0.44 to 3.9 ohm-m was obtained in this way. Twenty-three field muds were tested. These covered the same range of mud types as did laboratory muds. Oil provinces of the Gulf Coast, South Texas, West Texas, Oklahoma, Montana, and Canada were represented. MUD TEST PROCEDURE Each mud was tested for density, viscosity, pH, and filter loss by standard testing techniques. The resistivity measurements were obtained with a Schlumberger EMT meter. This meter required small volumes of sample, e.g., 2 mm. Filtrate was obtained from a Standard Baroid fil-ter press at the end of a 30-minute test. The filter cake from the same test was used for cake resistivity measurements. Mud, filtrate, and cake samples were heated to 100" F in a constant temperature water bath prior to measurement of resistivities. RESULTS The relation between mud resistivity (Rm) and mud filtrate resistivity (Rmf) is shown in Fig. 1. The solid line represents an average for the data. The equation of this line is Rmf =0.876 (Rm) 1.075 . . (1) Arbitrary limits, indicated by the dashed curves, have been set. The majority of the data falls within these limits, but some points do lie outside the limits. The approximate equation Rmt = 0.88 Rm , . . . . (2) will give satisfactory results within these limits. The data on mud cake resistivity Rmc is shown in Fig. 2. The solid line is an average for the data. The equation for the line is Rmc = 1.306 (Rm)0.88 The dashed lines are arbitrary limits on the data. Within these limits, Eq. 3 may be simplified to Rmc = 1.31 Rm . . . . (4) DISCUSSION The limiting curves in Figs. 1 and 2 represent maximum deviations of ±25 per cent. Thus the use of the average curves can introduce considerable error. There is no substitute for accurate measurements of mud, mud cake, and mud filtrate resistivities at the well site. The mud sample tested should be representative of the mud opposite the formation being logged. The average mud filtrate resistivity curve of Fig. 1 is reproduced in Fig. 3 with two curves which have been published for clay-base aqueous muds2,3. The latter curves were determined from average values of a large number of drilling fluids. The three curves have essentially the same slope and the differences between them are from 7 to 22 per cent. Comparison is made only to illustrate the possibility of error

T HE year 1920 will be a memorable one in the history of the world's coal supply. The prices reached were the highest of modern times, and as usually happens at such a time, the quality of the output deteriorated. In the last two years of the war, the world's output had risen close to the pre-war level. After the armistice, however, the cessation of munitions manufacture and the delay in resumption of normal business curtailed the demand for coal. Industrial disputes both in Europe and America closed many mines late in 1919 and further reduced the supply. Thus when in 1920 the world set its face to work again and industrial activity was resumed where resumption was possible, consumers' reserves of fuel proved insufficient and an almost universal feeling of apprehension over the coal supply swept around the world. The reasons for this alarm-lately a thing of the past-become clear when the world's production in 1920 is cast up.

The following data were collected some years since in the course of a series of experiments with oil as a substitute for coal in puddling, the earlier form of the Archer apparatus being employed. While I am not at liberty to give the name of the works at which the tests were made, I can personally warrant the accuracy of the record, and feel justified, therefore, in making this contribution to a discussion in which all trustworthy figures are likely to be helpful. Oil in Puddling. Starting with everything cold, we used 3518 pounds of oil to get the furnace in condition to charge a heat. After charging, we ran until we took out 13,340 pounds of puddled-blooms, using 8437 pounds, or 1333 gal1ons of oil. At 49 cents per gallon, the cost for oil per gross ton of blooms was $10.91; with coal at $4.871/2, and a consumption of 1.5 tons per ton of blooms (the usual quantity is ton for ton), the cost for coal is $7.31. The quantity of oil consumed in heating the furnace to the proper temperature and to make the bottom, is not included in the oil consumption stated. The quantity used was 3518 pounds of oil. Usually, the furnace need only be lighted, but in this case it had been repaired, and it was necessary to make a new .bottom. This required the quantity of oil necessary to make three heats of blooms, or 2109 pounds. Deducting this from the 3518 pounds leaves 1409 pounds of oil as the quantity consumed every week in lighting up.
