The influence which Au, Ag, Sb, Bi, Sn, and Cu have, both individually and collectively, on the activity coefficient of sulfur in liquid lead at 600"C zuas studied by circulating a H2S-Hz gas wlixture over a specific lead alloy until equilibrium was attained. Subsequently, the H2S concentration in the equilibrium gas mixture and sulfur concentration in the condensed phase were deterruined. The elements gold, silver, and antinzony (above 8 at. pct) increased the activity coefficient of sulfur. Bismuth had no apparent effect. Tin (above 3 at. pct) and copper decreased the coefficient. The influence of an individual element, i, on sulfur is best reported as the interaction parameter, riS, which is defined as The values o these first-order interaction zus are: ESzu = —55.0. These interaction parameters are used to predict the activity coefficient of sulfur in six fouv-component alloys and one seven-component alloy. Comparisons are made with direct experimental determinations. INTERACTIONS in dilute solution have been studied by many investigators. Most of the experimental work has been confined to solute-solvent interactions in simple binary systems and solute-solute interactions in ternary systems. Dealy and pehlke"~ have summarized the available literature on activity coefficients at infinite dilution in nonferrous binary alloys and have calculated from published data the values for interaction parameters in dilute nonferrous alloys. Interaction parameters are a convenient means of summarizing the effect of one solute species on another in a given solvent. Only a few investigators have studied interactions of the nonmetallic element sulfur in a metallic solvent. They are as follows: Rosenqvist,~ sulfur in silver; Rosenqvist and Cox,4 sulfur in steel; chipman, sulfur in alloy steels; Alcock and Richardson,% ulfur in copper alloys; Cheng and Alcock,' sulfur in iron, cobalt, and nickel; Cheng and ~lcock,' sulfur in lead and tin. The only reported work on the Pb-S system in the dilute-solution region is that of Cheng and Alcock.' Their investigation involved a study of the solubility of sulfur in liquid lead over the temperature range 500" to 680°C. The results may be summarized by the following relationship: S (dissolved in lead) + Pb(1) = PbS(s) log at. %S = -3388/T + 3.511 Experimentally, it was found that Henry's law was valid up to the solubility limit of sulfur in lead, i.e., at 600°C up to 0.43 pct. Their investigation did not include the study of sulfur in lead alloys. More accurate calculations could be made in smelting and refining systems if activity coefficients of solute species could be accurately predicted in complex solutions. One of the objectives of this study was to compare the experimental data with the values calculated from the equations derived from models for dilute solutions proposed by wagner9 and Alcock and Richardson. A temperature of 600°C was chosen as the experimental temperature to attain reasonable reaction rates and to minimize volatilization of the condensed phase. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The Pb, Au, Ag, Sb, Bi, Sn, and Cu used for preparation of the alloys were American Smelting and Refining Co. research-grade materials. All were 99.999+ pct purity except the antimony and tin which were 99.99+ pct. The initial alloys prepared for this study consisted of twenty-one binary alloys, eleven ternary alloys, and one six-component alloy. The constituent elements were mixed for each desired alloy and were placed in a crucible machined from spectrographically pure graphite. The crucible was placed in a vycor tube which was evacuated with a vacuum pump and gettered by titanium sponge at 800°C for 8 to 12 hr. After the gettering was completed, the chamber containing the titanium was sealed and removed. The remaining sample chamber was placed in a tube furnace at 800°C for 2 hr and quenched in cold water. The final operation consisted of homogenization of the alloy for 1 to 2 weeks at a temperature just below the solidus for the individual system. The resulting master alloys were sectioned into small pieces and a random choice made for individual equilibrations. Cobalt sulfide (Cogs8) used to control the gas atmosphere in the circulation system was prepared by passing dried HzS for 24 hr over a Co-S mixture heated to 700°C in a tube furnace. This material was then mixed with cobalt metal to give a two-phase mixture which, when heated in hydrogen to a particular temperature, produced a desired H2S/H2 gas atmosphere in the circulation system. ONE of the primary purposes of this investigation was to determine how far blast-furnace metal and slag depart from equilibrium, particularly with respect to sulphur distribution. In studying the equilibrium between blast-furnace metal and slag, there are two approaches that can be used. One method is to use synthetic slags, as was done by Hatch and Chipman;' the other is to equilibrate the metal and slag from the blast furnace by remelting in the laboratory. In the set of experiments here reported, metal and slag tapped simultaneously from the same blast furnace were used for all the runs. The experiments were divided into two groups: 1—a time series at each of three different temperatures to determine the t.ime required for metal and slag to equilibrate in various respects under the experimental conditions of remelting, and 2—an addition series to determine the effect of additions to the slag on the equilibrium between the metal and slag. An atmosphere of carbon monoxide was used to simulate blastfurnace conditions. The furnace used for this investigation was a vertically mounted tubular Globar type with two concentric porcelain tubes inside the heating element. The control couple was located between the two porcelain tubes. The carbon monoxide atmosphere was introduced through a mercury seal at the bottom of the inner tube. On top, a glass head (with ground joint) provided access for samples and a long outlet tube prevented air from sucking back into the furnace. The charge used was iron 6 g, slag 5 g for the time series, or iron 9 g, slag 7 % g for the addition series. This slag-to-metal ratio of 0.83 approximates the average for blast-furnace practice, which commonly ranges from about 0.6 to 1.1. A crucible of AUC graphite containing the above charge was suspended by a molybdenum wire in the head and, after flush, was lowered to the center of the furnace as shown in Fig. 1. The cylindrical crucible was 2 in. long x % in. OD. The furnace was held within &3"C of the desired temperature for all the runs. The temperature was checked after the end of each run by flushing the inner tube with air and placing a platinum-platinum-10 pct rhodium thermocouple in the position previously occupied by the crucible; the temperature of the majority of the runs was much closer than the deviation specified above. The couple was checked against a standard couple which had been calibrated at the gold and palladium points, and against a Bureau of Standards couple. The carbon monoxide atmosphere was prepared by passing COz over granular graphite at about 1200°C. It was purified by bubbling through a 30 pct aqueous solution of potassium hydroxide and passing through ascarite and phosphorus pentoxide. The train and connections were all glass except for a few butt joints where rubber tubing was used for flexibility. The rate of gas flow was 25 to 40 cc per min. As atmospheric pressure prevailed in the furnace, the pressure of carbon monoxide was only slightly higher than the partial pressure thereof in the bosh and hearth zones of a blast furnace—by virtue of the elevated total pressure therein. Simultaneous samples of blast-furnace metal and slag were taken for these remelting experiments. The composition of each is given in the first line of Table I. There is considerable uncertainty as to the significant temperature in a blast furnace at which to compare experimental results. This uncertainty arises not only from lack of temperature measurements in the furnace, but also from lack of knowledge of the zone where the slag-metal reactions occur. (Do they occur principally at the slag-metal interface in the crucible, or as the metal is descending through the slag, or even higher as slag and metal are splashing over the coke?) The known temperatures are those of the metal at cast, which averages about 2600°F, and of the cast or flush slag, which is usually about 100°F hotter. To bridge this uncertainty, remelting temperatures were chosen as 1400°, 1500" (2732°F), and 1600°C. For the time series the duration of remelt was 1, 2, 4, 8, 17, or 66 hr; crucible and contents were quenched in brine. The addition series were quenched by rapidly transferring the crucible and contents from the furnace to a close-fitting copper "mold." Conditions are described for producing, by primary recrystallization, a matrix suitable for the growth of large grains near (110)[001] orientation in silicon iron strip by secondary recrystallizaliun in a steep temperature gradient. The orientation distribution of these large grains is expressed in terms of rotational deviations about the cross-rolling direction, the rolling direction, and the normal to the sheet, the deviational spread increasing in that order. With the aid of cowplenientary published data on the orientation dependence of growth rate, it is shown that this observation is consistent with the oriented-growth theory of recrystallization lextures. It is conclutled that growth-rate and orientation-distribution data obtained in a steep thermal gradient should be used with caution to account for isothermally Produced recrystallization textures. SEVERAL authors have reported methods of growing large grains by re crystallization of a small-grained matrix in silicon iron 1- B and pure a cr The present study was a preliminary in the growth of single crystals and bicrystals for surface relaxation," grain boundary mobility, and grain boundary diffusion studies. The method was to control the growth of a seed crystal into a suitable primary re crystallized matrix by feeding through a steep temperature gradient. The driving energy for growth derived from the grain boundary energy released as the seed crystals grew into the matrix. Thus, stability of the matrix against normal grain growth was considered to be essential for success. It was known that the manganese sulfide dispersion present in commercial silicon iron performs this function during secondary recrystallization to the (110)[001.] texture.12 Hence commercial, rather than high-purity, material was used throughout. The paper describes the growth conditions for grains large enough to be used as seed crystals for further growth into single crystals. The orientation distribution of the seed crystals is analyzed and its significance for the theory of recrystallization textures is discussed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Strip material was supplied by the Steel Co. of Wales, Ltd. The chemical analysis in weight percent was Si, 2.90; C, 0.015; Mn, 0.059; P, 0.011; S, 0.027; Ni, 0.032; 0, 0.009; Fe, balance. A gradient furnace of similar design to one described previously4 was loaned from B.I.S.R.A. It consisted essentially of a vertical water-cooled copper slot projecting downwards into the hot zone of a molybdenum furnace. Hydrogen was passed through the furnace to protect both heating element and specimen from oxidation. Strip specimens up to 8 cm wide and 0.2 cm thick were sealed into the furnace at the mouth of the copper slot. A coating of light oil on the strip surface maintained the seal during translation of a specimen. The maximum temperature gradient in the region just below the copper slot was 500°C per cm over 1 cm, with the hottest point controlled at 1175°C. Several large grains would usually grow by secondary recrystallization from the primary matrix when a specimen was immersed in the hot zone for about 30 min. A back-reflection X-ray camera was constructed to facilitate rapid and accurate orientation determinations of the large grains produced. It was possible to reproduce a standard geometry, with regard to strip and camera, without the tedium of careful alignment on each occasion. Specimens, typically 4 cm wide and 75 cm long, were cut with the longitudinal axis parallel to the rolling direction of the original strip. The surfaces were cleaned by immersion alternately in a hot aqueous solution containing 2 pct hydrofluoric acid plus 10 pct sulfuric acid and in cold 10 pct nitric acid. The nitric acid etch was just sufficient to reveal the grain structure. Rolling and annealing treatments to prepare the matrix (discussed below) were followed by growth of seed crystals in the gradient furnace. The matrix was transformed to a single crystal by growth of a selected seed crystal connected to the matrix by a thin neck. 4,5 Growth was promoted by controlled feeding into the gradient furnace. Several single crystals of controlled orientation were grown successfully from seed crystals by twisting the interconnecting neck in a reorien-tation jig.4 EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Growth Conditions. A suitable matrix for growth of large grains was prepared starting from primary re-crystallized strip 1.9 mm thick. This was cold-rolled in two stages each being followed by a recrystallization anneal at 800°C for a few minutes. Such treatment gave the required growth matrix only if the two cold-reduction stages were each performed in several passes and in the following ranges: the first, 30 to 70 pct; the second, 10 to 50 pct. WITHIN the past thirty years the United States has been involved in two tragic, vicious, and costly world wars. To make the world safe for democracy was the reason given for our participation, but the confusion and misunderstanding that prevails all over the world today suggests that war is not the proper approach to the attainment of that utopia. These conflicts were conceived and prosecuted by nations far advanced in civilization and culture. Their best manhood was sacrificed, a staggering tax burden was saddled on their peoples, huge financial losses were incurred, destruction of property was appalling, and cultural and peaceful scientific advancement received a setback that may require centuries to retrieve. Therefore, some basis is established for the conclusion that progress in the past fifty years has been most outstanding in the development of instruments used for death and destruction, and that progress in this direction between the two World Wars would indicate that the next war will go far toward total destruction of world civilization.

IN spite of a world production of lead amounting to 1,300,000 tons, of which the United States produces slightly less than one-half, it appears that the mines at present are hardly able to supply the demand. For this there are several reasons. The lead deposits, geologically speaking, were formed comparatively near the surface under conditions of lower temperatures, with the richer deposits often residuary; that is, enriched by surface water, and consequently soon exhausted. Lead is practically absent from a great part of the world. The great Canadian shield, the eastern part of the Dominion, contains practically none. Scandinavia contains no lead. It is absent from geo- logical formations of great age, but does occur in large quantities in the deposits in the Rocky Mountain region. These deposits are, more or less directly, of igneous origin, but here, too, there is a tendency of the lead shoots to concentrate in the upper part, and when they go down the deposits turn to zinc-copper and some other metals. This is one of the best established facts of economic geology. The deposits of the Mississippi Valley district, from Kansas-Oklahoma, to Canada, are in comparatively accessible limestone beds, at a depth seldom more than 500 ft. Therefore, the lead is easily mined but more easily exhausted.

TIN is not yet classed as a rare metal, but it has taken a long stride in that direction in the last ten months. It is now in Group 1 of the War Production Board's critical list, along with such company as magnesium aluminum, and nickel. This is in sharp contrast with the position a year ago when the supply well exceeded demand, and tin was used when feasible in place of really scarce metals. The geographical sources of tin production in recent years are shown in Table 1. Preponderance of former production in southeastern Asia, particularly Malaya and the Netherlands Indies (but all now controlled by the Japanese). is entirely too marked to be funny. Of the 1940 known world production of 237,000 long tons nearly all was controlled by the United States, Great Britain, and their friends. Now their supply is from countries that produced only 28 per cent of that amount. This excludes China and Australia, which because of shipping difficulties and local consumption, cannot be expected to export much tin. In spite of some expected increase in production, therefore, the supply is, and will continue to stay for at least several years, way below that desired for even normal uses. TAXES in general are onerous and are not a pleas- ant subject for discourse. There are, however, some very cogent reasons why we should dedicate a part of our thoughts and services to the solution of our taxation problems: The happiness of every individual in the United States depends on the maintenance of a stable government. The collection of taxes is an indispensable function of a stable government, and the power to collect taxes depends in part on the question whether taxes are fair and equitable. As representatives of the mining industry it is our duty to .protect it from tax burdens that are discriminatory or- unjust, As citizens we find that taxation is incessantly endeavouring to unravel the knots in our purse-strings. Many members of the Institute may be consulted .by clients on taxation problems, especially the phases which re- late to depletion and valuation. It is the hope of the writer that the discussion of some of the current depletion and valuation problems will stimulate interest in the problems, and as a consequence of this new interest facts will be ventilated, opinions rendered and services performed, which will be a means of solving the problems to the satisfaction of all parties interested.

LARGE deposits of titaniferous magnetite occur associated with anorthosite and gabbro in the Lake Sanford area, Essex County, New York. The ore, gabbro, and anorthosite show consanguineous relations. Anorthosite grades through gabbroic anorthosite into gabbro but is locally intruded by gabbro. Structural and petrographic evidence suggests that gabbro was differentiated from anorthosite by filter pressing. Field and laboratory study of ore occurrences indicates that an ore residuum concentrated in the gabbro through magmatic segregation by normal crystallization and flowage. Ore occurs as bands which grade into gabbro, and also as large masses which replace anorthosite. Ore in the gabbro is finer grained and richer in ilmenite than ore in anorthosite.

Molybdenum and tungsten have desirable corrosion and temperature resistant properties, but the metals in bulk are expensive and their fabrication is difficult. Such considerations led to a search for a method of plating them upon base metals. This search was successful and led furthermore to a number of developments which could not have been foreseen. Neither pure tungsten nor pure molybdenum has been electroplated successfully, although the literature of electroplating is liberally sprinkled with the description of unsuccessful attempts. The process of plating these metals by thermal reduction of their halides has achieved onlv limited usefulness because of technical limitations and because of limited range of product quality. Plating by thermal decomposition of the carbonyls does not suffer from limitations of the same sort and the properties of the plate are readily controllable. This paper describes the plating of molybdenum and tungsten, and of compounds and alloys of these metals, by pyrolysis of their carbonyl vapors. Chromium also has been plated in this manner, but the experiments upon chromium have been less extensive and the results much less satisfactory. Probably the most important of the products which we have obtained are the alloys with carbon, and the carbides of the metals. Either molybdenum or tungsten can be deposited upon a base metal as a coherent and adherent coating. By adjusting the plating condition the carbon content of the coating can be made to have any value from substantially zero to about 35 atomic pct. The hardness is dependent primarily upon the amount of carbon in the plate and can be regulated over a very wide range, some coatings containing considerable carbon being harder than sapphire. In addition to products already known this method of plating has yielded new carbides of molybdenum and tungsten and alloys supersaturated with carbon. These new products are possible because, in the process of plating, carbonyl can be decomposed at temperatures as low as about 150°C, and thus in the presence of other substances reactions occur which could perhaps not be produced in any other way. In addition to carbides and alloys with carbon, sulphides and oxides of molybdenum and tungsten have been produced and studied. There are certain other advantages of the carbonyl method of plating. It is not required that the base have good electrical conductivity as in electrochemical processes, and the base need not have the temperature stability required in plating from a halide. Drilling activity during 1944 increased considerably in the oil fields and slightly in the shallow gas fields of western Pennsylvania. The number of deep tests (middle Devonian or deeper) completed during 1944 was the same as in 1943 and did not result in discoveries of additional reserves of natural gas or oil. Thus far no commercial oil production has been obtained from sands below the Upper Devonian in Pennsylvania. As a result of the lack of new discoveries, oil production in nearly all of the producing areas in the entire Pennsylvania grade region declined 10 to 11 per cent. Stocks of Pennsylvania Oil The Peilnsylvania grade crude-oil stocks in storage on January 1943 were 2,479,000 bbl. In January 1944 crude stocks totaled 1,846,000 bbl., and during 1944 the stocks of Pennsylvania grade crude declined to a year-ending balance of 1,617,000 bbl. Nearly all of this oil is "unavailable for use," representing pipe-line fill, tank bottoms and limited working inventories at the refineries. The storage of Pennsylvania oil has declined to a point where little or no available crude oil is currently in storage. Prices The posted price of Pennsylvania oil remained constant during 1944; however, on Rug. I, 1944, the wartime Government subsidy was instituted at a rate of 75¢ per barrel. The average price in the Bradford area, including the subsidy, was $3.31 per barrel. New Technical Developments The Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Association started a rather ambitious program of research in production fundamentals and technology during 1944. Several well-qualified engineers have been employed and a laboratory is to be equipped at Bradford. The group will investigate, in cooperation with the American Petroleum Institute, the possibilities of bacteria as agents in oil recovery, and undertake other studies of both a fundamental and an applied nature. In cooperation with the Pennsylvania State College, the Research Group worked out a method of measuring water-intake rates in different strata. The method involves injecting salt water down a string of tubing and fresh water down the annulus, determining the location of the interface electrically, and measuring the input rates above and below the interface. The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with oil companies of the Venango district, developed a simple gas-lift tubing string, which is operating successfully in some 20 wells. This device uses the air-gas mixture produced with the oil to lift it by the usual gas-lift principles. The Northern Ordnance Co. is experimenting with a chamber lift device that expels the oil in an unbroken column. These devices hold considerable promise

UNTIL recently, the only commercial method of producing magnesium has been fused salt electrolysis, despite a considerable amount of experimental work on the direct reduction of magnesium oxide. In this early work, a number of investigators demonstrated that magnesium oxide would react with any one of several reducing agents to produce magnesium vapor, but that the mixture of magnesium oxide and reducing agent must be heated to a high temperature even in a vacuum. In particular, it was demonstrated that silicon and aluminum are effective reducing agents and that when either of these is used the magnesium vapor can be condensed to massive metal. In spite of this knowledge, no successful commercial reduction process was developed, at least in this country, because of the operational difficulties imposed by the requirement of high temperature and vacuum and because of the high cost of the reducing agent. The outstanding experimental work done by Pidgeon, who carefully reviewed all of the known methods of making magnesium and then selected ferrosilicon reduction, overcame some of the operational difficulties. The process developed by Pidgeon comprises briquetting a mixture of calcined dolomite and reducing agent, pre-heating the briquets to about 600°C. in an externally heated alloy retort, reducing the MgO with silicon in an evacuated horizontal alloy retort heated externally to about 1150°C., and condensing the magnesium vapor to a solid in a cold extension of the retort projecting beyond the fr6nt of the furnace. A major advantage of Pidgeon's process is that the retort is not cooled down between charges. Earlier investigators had used apparatus that necessitated cooling and reheating of the retort between charges. Early in January 1942, when the War Production Board was considering the Pidgeon process for quickly increasing the production of magnesium, The New Jersey Zinc Co. offered to have a research investigation of the process carried on, with the hope of assisting in its further development. This offer was accepted, and a two-retort pilot plant was built at Palmerton and put in operation on Jan. 29, 1942. An intensive investigation of certain phases of the process was carried out in the ensuing four months. This investigation was completed in the last part of May 1942, and the pilot plant was then shut down. Subsequently, The New Jersey Zinc Co. was requested to have further development work done on the process, and a more extensive investigation was undertaken in August I942 under contract with the War production Board and under the super- vision of the War Metallurgy Committee. The Southwest Antioch Oil Field located in T2&3N - R2&3W, Garvin County, Okla., was discovered in February, 1946, by The Globe Oil & Refining Co. and The Vickers Petroleum Co. at their Melinda Gibson No. 1. Oil production was encountered at a depth of 6,525 ft in 14 ft of lower Pennsyl-vanian sandstone. The producing sand, locally called the ."Gibson" or "Third Deese," is a sand bar deposit strung along the west flank of the Pauls Valley uplift in a northwest-southeast direction. The oil reservoir is defined to the east by the edge of sand deposition along the uplift and to the west by the gradation of sand into shale. Within the Antioch Unit, the sand dips from 150 to 400 ft per mile southwesterly and has a pay thickness varying from 10 to 55 ft and averaging 28 ft. Several areas of Gibson production have been developed, including the Katie pool on the south, the Elmore Area of the Southwest Antioch Gibson Sand pool. the Southwest Antioch Gibson Sand pool proper, the Southwest Maysville pool and the New Hope pool on the north. Production extends over a belt 22 miles long by about two miles wide and is continuous except into the Katie and New Hope pools. It appears that drilling will soon prove these intervening areas productive. To March 1, 1950, approximately 18,000 acres have been developed with 450 Gibson wells. It is likely this count will ultimately reach 32.000 acres with 800 wells. RESERVOIR The natural production of oil from the Gibson reservoir is primarily due to solution gas expansion though gravity also plays a part. There is no indication of water drive or evidence that an initial gas cap existed. Gibson oil has a stock tank gravity of 43" API and was saturated at the original reservoir pressure of 2.925 psi. THE important developments within the past few years in electrochemistry, in particular in the electric furnace art, in electrometallurgy and in the methods of combatting corrosion are to be the subjects of my discussion. Fig.1 shows the rise of the electric steel furnace industry in this country and Canada. Many prophesied that the electric furnace was largely a war baby and that the sudden rise in the industry, due to the outbreak of the great war, would be fol-lowed by an equally sudden drop after the armistice. However, the curve shows that this, prophecy was not correct; the number of furnaces in operation in this country and Canada has continued to increase steadily, so that at the end of 1925 there were over 525 electric steel furnaces in successful operation. What does this mean? It has a big significance, namely that the en-tire steel industry has been revolutionized, to a certain extent, that we have been able to introduce certain alloys and steel products that we were unable to pro-duce before. On the table is. a sample of metallic chro-mium, analyzing more than 98 per cent chromium, made in the electric furnace. Before the war, the only commercial method of producing chromium was that by the Goldschmidt process. If chromium oxide is mixed with granulated aluminum, a violent reaction occurs, resulting in the production of metallic chro-mium. However, the price of chromium so made will always be above that of the raw material, which at the present time is about 27 cents a pound.. Furthermore, the chromium metal could only be turned out in small quantities, whereas in the electric furnace, large quan-tities, ton masses, can be produced today. The advent of chromium produced in the electric furnace has brought about an entire new phase in the alloy indus-try. The fuel-fired furnaces can turn out a low-carbon chromium steel that runs about 3 per cent chromium, whereas in the electric furnace, 60 per cent ferro-chromium is daily produced in large masses with almost entire elimination of carbon. It is difficult indeed to turn out ferrochrome very low in carbon. New steels are being produced today, for example the steel with which everyone has become familiar within the 'last few years, "stainless steel,". and which would have been impossible without the low-carbon ferrochrome. The elimination of most of the carbon made it possible to roll the chromium steels into thin sheets and manu-facture them into knife blades.

The Southwest Antioch Oil Field located in T2&3N - R2&3W, Garvin County, Okla., was discovered in February, 1946, by The Globe Oil & Refining Co. and The Vickers Petroleum Co. at their Melinda Gibson No. 1. Oil production was encountered at a depth of 6,525 ft in 14 ft of lower Pennsyl-vanian sandstone. The producing sand, locally called the ."Gibson" or "Third Deese," is a sand bar deposit strung along the west flank of the Pauls Valley uplift in a northwest-southeast direction. The oil reservoir is defined to the east by the edge of sand deposition along the uplift and to the west by the gradation of sand into shale. Within the Antioch Unit, the sand dips from 150 to 400 ft per mile southwesterly and has a pay thickness varying from 10 to 55 ft and averaging 28 ft. Several areas of Gibson production have been developed, including the Katie pool on the south, the Elmore Area of the Southwest Antioch Gibson Sand pool. the Southwest Antioch Gibson Sand pool proper, the Southwest Maysville pool and the New Hope pool on the north. Production extends over a belt 22 miles long by about two miles wide and is continuous except into the Katie and New Hope pools. It appears that drilling will soon prove these intervening areas productive. To March 1, 1950, approximately 18,000 acres have been developed with 450 Gibson wells. It is likely this count will ultimately reach 32.000 acres with 800 wells. RESERVOIR The natural production of oil from the Gibson reservoir is primarily due to solution gas expansion though gravity also plays a part. There is no indication of water drive or evidence that an initial gas cap existed. Gibson oil has a stock tank gravity of 43" API and was saturated at the original reservoir pressure of 2.925 psi. THE Lehigh Navigation Coal Company Inc. operates steep-pitch, relatively deep mines in the Panther Creek Valley, at the eastern end of the southern anthracite coal field. Commercially minable coal beds are the Mammoth,† Primrose, Orchard, and Buck Mountain,‡ their respective thicknesses average 50, 15, 1o and 12 ft. Sand slates immediately overlie and underlie these beds, though in some locations sandstone or conglomerate beds occur. Underground operations extend to a depth of 1200 ft. below the surface, and comprise a bulk of virgin work on the lower levels, and a small amount of remining on the upper levels. With increase in depth, ventilation has become a more important factor. DEVELOPMENT In early days slopes or drifts were driven in the outcropping coal on the hillsides. Subsequent development was by water-level tunnels, with portals above high water in Panther Creek. These tunnels have been maintained because they intercept and drain much water that enters the mined-out portion of the bed and otherwise would follow down to the deep workings. Below these tunnels, the coal was customarily developed by slopes. Muleways, which are zigzag chutes easy to travel, were also driven to connect lower openings with the water levels. When it became necessary to go still deeper, the slopes were abandoned, and vertical multicompartment shafts were sunk from the surface. Levels have been at vertical intervals of from 195 to 250 ft. Recent practice has been toward the latter spacing; splitting the total lift, however, by starting to mine from chutes extending halfway up to the level above. Chutes customarily are spaced at 50, 60 or 70-ft. centers along the gangways. At some mines, additional shafts have been sunk from the surface to the level containing the main pumping station, and these carry the discharge lines from the pumps. As the mines are ventilated by the exhausting system, both the hoisting and so-called water shafts serve as intakes. The main fan is always on the surface, and is connected with the return airways from the various levels by an air hole or a vertical shaft. For economy, when the present deepest levels were developed, main return-air shafts or air holes were not extended to the new level, but connections were made from the new level to that above by two or more holes. It is doubtful that this method will be continued, as complications in the system, increased resistance to flow, and other difficulties undoubtedly will counterbalance any economies this provision may afford.

In this past year of our Institute's life, February 1960 to February 1961, we had some major problems to face, as did our members, since businesses in which they were engaged were feeling the recession. The major problems confronting us during this past year were: 1) Financing the new Engineering Center. 2) Keeping our three almost autonomous societies working together and toward a stronger AIME. 3) Cooperation with other engineering societies the Functional Plan. 4) Licensing and registration, and the Model Law. 5) The reorganization of the Council of Section Delegates. 6) Combatting the slump in the appeal of engineering to the young students.

The problem of optimizing from an economic standpoint the capacity of grinding equipment in the design of a new concentrator is discussed. Although directed specifically to copper flotation mills employing conventional wet, grinding, the material presented is considered applicable with modifications to other types of ores and other grinding methods. A general approach to optimizing the grinding capacity is outlined and illustrated by an example. The' interrelation between grinding capacity and other aspects of the project is considered. The problem of regrind capacity and its relation to preceeding and subsequent processing steps is also discussed. Finally, factors are considered that may, in certain cases, dictate modifications of the suggested approach.
