An experimental study of the variation of transverse-rupture strength with composition Anexperimentaland grain studysize has shown that the strength reaches a maximum for values of the mean free path between carbide particles of 0.3 to 0.6 microns. The fracture oforiginates in and proceeds through the carbide grains mainly. Impact strength and hardness also were recorded. MOST of the physical properties of sintered carbides vary linearly with composition. The transverse-rupture strength, however, shows a unique behavior. As the amount of binder metal is varied from 6 to 25 pct by weight, the strength at first increases; then, between 15 and 20 pct Co, it reaches a maximum of nearly 400,000 psi, and finally decreases with further additions of binder metal. This behavior of the transverse-rupture strength has been reported, among others, by Englel and Sandford and Trent.' The significance of these observations has not been discussed in the literature. That it may be of more than specific importance is indicated by the very similar variation of strength with composition encountered in other systems sintered in the presence of a liquid phase, such as Tic-Ni3 and Fe-Cu.' Experimental Details All compacts were prepared and sintered according to normal industrial practice. The average diameter of WC grains and the mean free path between grains were measured on metallographically prepared samples by a method of linear and planar analysis sing the relations where d is the average diameter of dispersed grains; Nl is the number of noncontiguous grains intersected on a metallographic plane by a line of unit length; N, is the number of noncontiguous grains per unit area; P is the mean free path between grains of dispersed phase; and f is the volume fraction of dispersed phase. Approximately 1000 grains were counted on each sample. For each composition d2 was plotted against P, the resulting straight lines serving as a check on the measurements. The distribution curves of the WC powders of different average diameters were homologous, and no attempt was made to influence the grain size by blending powders, adjusting the sintering conditions, or otherwise altering the particle size distribution. Densities were measured by differential weighings in air and water. The degree of densification did not vary consistently with either composition or grain size. The density is influenced by slight amounts of impurities, specifically by 0.1 to 0.2 pct Fe which enters the powders during ball milling. As an illus- -tration of the experimental variations, a number of measured densities are listed in Table I. They are expressed in percentage of theoretical density, as calculated from the published X-ray densities of WC and Co.' For the purpose of determining the transverse-rupture strength, rectangular test specimens (3/16x 3/8x3/4 in.) were broken by loading at the center of a 9/16 in. span. The average strength of five or more samples is reported for each composition and grain size. The compacts were ground on two parallel surfaces only. The load was applied at an average rate of 6,800 psi per sec. Since the elongation after fracture of the alloys is very small, it was assumed that the compacts deform elastically to failure and the fracture stress was calculated by the conventional beam formula. The data for one alloy are presented in Table II as an example of the results and scattering ranges encountered. The precision of the test, as measured by the average difference between duplicates, is of the order of 15,000 psi. The results are strictly comparable only to compacts prepared and tested in the manner described and of similar chemical composition and grain size characteristics. Unnotched Charpy specimens were used for impact testing. Each point represents the average of 3 to 20 samples, the larger number being used in an attempt to determine the influence of grain size. Considerable scatter was encountered, the range from lowest to highest value often amounting to 30 pct of the impact strength. The hardness is reported as a Ra reading, using a 60 kg load with diamond brale indenter. Compositions are given in weight percent.

An elaborate series of experiments has been conducted during the past three years at Irvington, N. J., which has resulted in the perfection of a process for the manufacture of smokeless fuel from high-volatile coals, and for the recovery and refinement of the coal-tar products derived therefrom. These experiments have been financed by Messrs. Blair & Co., of New York, and were conducted under the direction of Charles H. Smith, a member of this Institute, and the inventor of the process. The low-temperature distillation of coal has interested investigators for many years. Sporadic attempts have been made to solve the mechanical problems, but until the Smith process was developed, they were not carried to conclusions of economic value. The present coal shortage and the increasing demand for smokeless fuels make this subject one of timely interest. DescRiption of Plant The following equipment was installed and operated during the experimental period: Four horizontal and two vertical units of commercial size for the low-temperature distillation of the coal; two vertical, two horizontal, and two inclined benches for distillation of the briquets at medium and higher temperatures; presses and auxiliary equipment necessary for making briquets; and a complete byproduct recovery and tar-refining plant. This commercial equipment is provided with gas and electric meters, pyrometers and other apparatus for recording accurately the results of all experiments. There is, in addition to the commercial equipment, a complete chemical laboratory with distillation and recovery apparatus, including facilities far refining and cracking the tar and measuring the yields and calorific value of the gas. This apparatus makes possible a study on a small scale, of the various problems involved in the process. Description of Process Mr. Smith's experiments have resulted in the production on a commercial scale of: 1. A fuel, called Carbocoal, which, for convenience in handling, is prepared in briquet form.

SOME time ago the Detroit Copper Mining Co. had to decide the question whether it would pay to re-treat slime-tailings, and several machines were tested in order to ascertain the type of construction which would give the greatest saving. In previous tests on the ore of this company, several tables proved far inferior to the Frue vanner, and for this reason they did not receive any serious consideration. In the late tests, however, one table was found to surpass the vanner in the percentage of saving made. The Frue vanner used in these tests had been adjusted approximately to the slope which the slime-vanuers in the concentrator of the Detroit Copper Co. had at that time, about 2 in. between the inside of the wooden posts, or 0.272 in. per ft. It had not been determined, however, if this slope was the most economical one for treating the slime-feed in the mill, or for re-treating the tailings from the slime-vanners, and I was instructed to ascertain by test-runs, under different conditions, the best adjustments for the work to. be done. In order to determine if a change in the adjustments of the machines would improve the results, it seemed sufficient to continue running the tests between the vanner and the table before mentioned, keeping the feed and all other conditions the same, but. varying the adjustments of the vanner .from run to run. I employed a vanner-man of long experience to operate these machines, who expressed the opinion that a slope between 2 3/8 and 2.5 in. between the posts (0.323 and 0.340 in. per ft.) would give the best results. Some runs made this way gave a considerable improvement. While for a slope of 2 in. (0.272 in. per ft.) the saving had been only 40.5 per cent. of that of the table, it .was 49.2 per cent. for 2.5 in. (0.340 in. per ft.) slope. A decrease of

Although Australia is the world's second biggest producer of iron ore, the last few years have not been easy for companies in Western Australia's Pilbara region (see map) where more than 90% of the nation's iron ore is produced. For at least two years, the industry has been plagued by dwindling markets abroad, production-crippling strikes at home, skyrocketing costs (well above the official 13% annual inflation rate), an acute shortage of investment capital, increasingly ferocious competition from foreign iron ore producers-and, as if all this weren't enough, by an over-valued currency that has caused incalculable damage not only to iron ore producers but to the entire mining industry of Australia. (This last problem was mitigated less than two months ago, on November 28, 1976, when the Australian dollar was devalued by a whopping 17 1/2%.)

R. F. Dornagala and D. J. McPherson (Armour Research Foundation, Chicago)—I should like to compliment the authors for a workmanlike job in determining the partial phase diagram of a system comprised of two rnetals which are certainly not easy to work with. We are completing work at Armour Research Foundation on an Atomic Energy Commission-sponsored project for the determination of eight zirconium binary diagrams. Work on the Zr-Cr system has been completed and should be published within the next year. For our work, Westinghouse Grade 3 iodide crystal bar served as the zirconium melting stock. Johnson-Matthey, electrolytic chromium, specially treated for oxygen removal, was employed. The overall constitution of the system determined at Armour Research Foundation is in very good agreement with the present work. We found a eutectic at 18 pct Cr and 1280 °C, somewhat lower than the value reported. This temperature was confirmed by thermal analysis, incipient melting studies, and regular isothermal anneals. The eutectoid was located close to 1 pct Cr and 835°C by metallographic analysis of annealed specimens. Maximum solubility of chromium in /S zirconium was 4.5 pct at the eutectic temperature. Chromium solubility in a zirconium was less than 0.28 pct at all temperatures. We found the compound at 53 pct to melt around 1700°C, with an open maximum, but determined its crystal structure to be hexagonal close-packed (MgZn, type). The lattice parameters were in excellent agreement with those determined by Wallbaum in 1942. The diagrams are in substantial agreement, and .part of the differences are undoubtedly due to the use of different zirconium melting stock. M. K. McQuillan (Birmingham, England)—I read this paper with a great deal of interest, as it covered the same field as some work of my own.' There are a number of points in the present paper on which I would like to comment. First, I should say that I, too, used zirconium prepared by magnesium reduction of the tetrachloride and electrolytically prepared chromium, and melted the alloys in a Kroll-type arc furnace. The purity of my alloys should, therefore, be comparable with the purity of those of the present authors, and any differences in our observations would not be expected to be attributable to this cause. The differences between my observations and theirs concern the presence of the eutectic, the temperature of the eutectoid, and the melting point of the compound. I would be very much interested in any further evidence the authors may have for the occurrence of the eutectic at 1380°C. During the course of my work I noted that a number of my alloys containing 60 to 90 pct Zr melted at about 1400 °C, and for a time assumed that a eutectic occurred at this temperature as described in the paper. On further investigation, however, I found that the structures of the as-melted alloys could not be made to fit in with this interpretation of the system. If a eutectic exists in this region of the system it would be expected that the as-melted alloys would show the usual type of cast structure, i.e., dendrites of the compound plus eutectic. This, however, does not occur, as may be seen from Fig. 9. The compound seen there is not dendritic in form, and the remaining material is by no means certainly eutectic. It may be argued that a compound such as ZrCrl would not form dendrites but would tend to crystallize in geometric shapes. In this case, however, I have evidence to the contrary, as on the chromium side of the compound, where a eutectic occurs at about 1545"C, the compound formed from the liquid takes on a conventional dendritic form, and the eutectic is observed in the interdendritic spaces in the usual way. There is no reason to suppose that the compound would behave differently in an alloy lying on the zirconium side of the compound composition if a eutectic existed there too.

The monocarbides of the A subgroup elements in the fourth and fifth group of the periodic table in addition to being hard and refractory are of special interest in that they are isomorphous in crystalline structure. They are cubic with a sodium chloride type structure in which the metal atoms are essentially close packed in a face-centered cubic arrangement with the carbon atoms placed in the interstices between. Interstitial structures of this close packed type were first investigated systematically by Egg1 and he gave the rule for their formation, stating that the radius ratio of the nonmetal to the metal atom should not exceed the value of 0.59. The carbides of interest are those of titanium and zirconium of the fourth group and vanadium, columbium and tantalum of the fifth group. Table 1 shows the radius ratio using the Goldschmidt radii for 12 coordination for the metal atoms and the diamond radius for the carbon atom. It will be noted that while there is considerable variation in the size of the metal atom, in all cases the ratio is smaller than the limit of 0.59 placed by Hägg. It has been known for some time that these cubic carbides are soluble in one another, at least to some extent or, in other words, the metal atoms can be replaced, one by another without destroying the stability of the structure. Since the stability of these close packed interstitial substances appears to depend more upon geometry than upon the exact chemical nature of the atoms involved, it is of interest to examine the possibilities of replacement in these carbides in some detail. Hume-Rothery2 has pointed out the importance of the difference in size of solute and solvent atom as a factor in limiting the solubility in simple binary solid solutions. Largely on an empirical basis, he states that if the difference in size between solvent and solute atom is more than 14-15 pct of the solvent atom, the range of solubility is very restricted. The atom size was based on the distance of closest approach in the elements involved. While there is some question as to how one should calculate the size of the metal atom in the carbide structures, reference to Table 1 will show that zirconium is the largest and vanadium the smallest of the group and that the difference is about 15 pct. The Ti-Zr difference is about 9 pct and the others are smaller. Thus one would predict that if the size factor controls the solubility, all of the pairs except VC-ZrC would have wide or complete solubility whereas this latter pair is on the border line and might have restricted solubility. The purpose of the present investi- gation was to examine the solubility of the several pairs of carbides by heating them together until equilibrium was established and then examining the product by X rays. Previous Work Agte3 and his associates prepared various transition metal carbides and determined the melting points of binary mixtures. He concluded from the shapes of the melting point curves that there was extensive solubility in the case of the cubic carbides. Umanskii and his colleagues made an investigation of a number of pairs of the cubic carbides, using X rays and plotted lattice parameter vs. composition curves for the systems TaC-Tic, CbC-Tic, TaC-ZrC and CbC-ZrC. All pairs showed a continuous series of solid solutions. The first two pairs gave a linear relation while the latter two showed a negative deviation from Vegard's law. Kiefer and Nowotny, in a paper which became available after the present work was well advanced, investigated the binary pairs of the five cubic carbides by means of X rays. Relatively few points were obtained and results indicated that in some cases, at least, equilibrium was not reached at the temperatures used. The results indicated that solubility in the VC-ZrC system was not complete. All of the results of previous investigations indicated the desirability of a more detailed study. Materials The raw materials used were mono-carbides of titanium, zirconium, vanadium, columbium and tantalum and were the purest which could readily be obtained commercially. Some of the physical, chemical, and electrical processes for conversion of saline water to potable or industrial water are economically surveyed from an engineering viewpoint. Since all these processes require energy for drive and equipment for containment, the correlative economic factors are developed which indicate directive influences in the choice of particular regional processes. The supply of natural waters and its distance also affect decision. Any one process will probably not prove dominant in the field because auxiliary considerations such as the saline water source; types and continuing availability of fuel; electric power use or recovery; area economic status and advancement; and the political pressures of population, group demands, and land use tend equivocally to obscure capital and operation cost decisions. Basic engineering considerations, data, and economic factors are presented to assist in the direction of these decisions. An exploding world population, increasing industrialization, advancing standards of living, and the desire of less-privileged nations for betterment focus attention sharply on a major problem: water. *19 Up to now, in retrospect, people have had it relatively easy in the handling of this problem. All the better dams in the most advantageous sites, the better aquifers, the shortest aqueducts have been built. In another phase of the problem, concern is evident that wastes cannot indefinitely be disposed of merely by keeping them dilute and discharging them promiscuously. 7-9 And, perhaps, as past civilizations have done,l5 water, watersheds, streams, and irrigation may have been mismanaged or, at the least, not adequately studied.3,5,36,37 In this last is perhaps the core of the problem. As Gross states, "Ignorance and too often, indifference are contributing factors. Archaeology and theology both furnish ample testimony to the existence of rich lands where deserts now stand; it was man who ravaged his land. Unless education is a companion to water development, development might as well be forgotten. But without water, there is no beginning."13 The U.S. is showing increasing concern about its water for predictions are that by 1980 the daily withdrawals will be 494 billion gal, a figure nearly equal to the dependable supply.Is This is based on a conservative projected population of 230 million. The major categories of withdrawals are: To make available this per capita average of 2150 gal per day will require an expenditure of $219 billion over the next 20 years. The U.S. is not alone in this concern. The United Nations shows as arid zones of the world: all of Africa north of the equator and south of the 20's parallel; all of the Arabian peninsula; all of the middle east and Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, northern and central India; a great band about 1000 miles wide along the 40'~ parallel from the Caspian Sea east across Russia through China to the Pacific Ocean; all of Australia except the coastal plain; the Caribbean Islands; the western nations of South America; and the western third of the United States and of Mexico. With one quarter of the earth's 57,500,000 sq miles of land thus suffering from lack of good water, increasing attention goes to the treatment of brackish and sea waters. The U.S. has been a leader in this field4,12, 16123,24 through its Office of Saline Water in the Dept. of Interior because even now some of its cities and regions are short of potable water. 11j'7,M Industrial water is also of vital concern as a result of ever higher industrialization1,14122 Other nations, among them JaPan, Israel,13188 Germany, Union of South Africa, Australia, Netherlands, France, Yugoslavia, Russia, and groups such as the Organization for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC)' are also diligent. The objective is low cost water, which means that both technology and economics have prominent roles in saline water conversion processes. The, state of stress around a vertical wellbore in rock following nonlinear stress-strain laws is examined by means of finite element analysis. The wellbore, is considered an axisymmetrier body with axisymmetric loading. The initial vertcal and borizontal stresses are "locked" in the rock elements around the wellbore and a new state of stress is generated by the displacements which occur around the borehole. A point-uise variation of the elastic moduli is made on the basis of the new stress state and the triaxial data. The initial stresses tire now reintroduced along with tile changed moduli and original boundary constraints. This procedure is repeatrd until convergent stresses are reached. The effect of nonlinearity on streases is examined for a 6,000-ft wellbore in a scbistose gnezss and Berea sandstone using results of laborratory triaxial compression tests. The results sbou that the effect is restrited to one well radius from the bottom periphery of the bole. Beyond a distance of one-quarter radius, the elfect of nonlinearity on stresscs IS almost always less than percent for the cases conszdered, The consideration of a static pressure inside the well does not magnify the effect of monlinearity on borehole stresscs. INTRODUCTION The terms " wellbore" and "borehole" here designate cylindrical openings in the ground with vertical axis and a circular cross-section. A knowledge of the stress redistribution that occurs on excavating a wellbore is important in understanding (1) the behavior of the lined or unlined hole, (2) hydraulic fracture response, and (3) the effect of stress redistribution on drillability; also it is important in predicting initial stresses in the virgin ground, and in analyzing the response of measuring instruments placed in the borehole. Our knowledge of the state of stress around a wellbore has been restricted to homogeneous, isotropic, elastic material and derives chiefly from the analysis by Miles and Toppingl and the photoelastic work of Galle and Wilhoit2 and Word and Wilhoit.3 In this investigation the state of stress is examined for a nonlinear elastic material by means of finite element analysis. Many rocks possess stress-strain curves that depart notably from straight lines in their initial or final portions. While the literature contains abundant stress-strain data from triaxial tests (axisymmetric loading) on cylindrical rock specimens, there is little information on rock deformability under nonaxisymmetric loading conditions such as occur at each point around the bottom of a wellbore. Although there is some knowledge of the effect of intermediate principal stress on rock strength, there is virtually nothing known about its effect on rock deformability; therefore, we have assumed here that the effect of intermediate principal stress can be ignored. A schistose gneiss4 and Berea sandstone5 were selected as representative rocks for this analysis. The traditional graphs of deviator stress (ol -o3) vs axial strain were reworked to give the tangent modulus as a function of the deviator stress for varying values of the minor principal stress. The result is a nesting family of skewed, bell-shaped curves for tile gneiss (Fig. 1A) and the sandstone (Fig. 2A). A similar replotting of the lateral strain data defines the variation of Poisson's ratio (v) with the deviator stress and confining pressure. These curves, shown in Fig. 1B for the gneiss and in Fig. 2B for the sandstone, are not so well ordered as the tangent modulus curves. However, all of these display an increase of v with deviator stress application, but the rate of increase diminishes with confinement. The ET and v curves for the two rock types are tabulated in Tables 1A and 1A for use in a digital computer so that material properties corresponding to a given state of stress can be assigned by interpolation. Contact metamorphism of coals is any physical or chemical change in the character of a coal directly attributable to heat of surface or intrusive igneous rocks. Coal beds so affected are found in the United States, England, Alaska, Mexico, New Zealand, Greenland, and other countries. Particularly in the United States, there is a wide occurrence of contact altered coals; conspicuous examples are found in Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Illinois, and North Carolina. During a recent examination of coal beds on Yampa River, in northwestern Colorado, the author had an opportunity to make some detailed observations on the contact metamorphism of coals. In this field, coals over an area of 20 sq. mi. have been affected by dikes, sheets, and sills;' samples of the coals were systematically collected and analyzed,2 with the view of obtaining more specific data on the character of these alterations. The investigation was threefold in purpose: to secure information on the lateral effects of a dike cutting a coal bed, on the range in vertical effects on coal beds overlying sheets or sills, and on the range in the vertical effects on coal beds underlying sheets and sills. Favorable field conditions, such as fresh outcrops and newly dug prospects, made possible many of the field observations and collections. The coals studied in this field belong chiefly to the Mesaverde and 11Laramie" formations. The Mesaverde coals, on the average, are blocky low-rank bituminous coals; the "Laramie" coals, which are considerably younger, are of subbituminous rank. The coals of both formations, in the northeastern part of the Yampa field, have been greatly affected by basalt intrusives, yielding all variations of carbonized coal from natural coke to the unaffected material. The igneous rock that directly affects the coals is a fine-grained olivine basalt that is intruded, in sheets up to 200 ft. thick, into the coal-bearing

DESPITE the large amount of study which has been devoted to the subject our present knowledge of the copper-oxygen system remains incomplete and unsatisfactory in many respects. This applies particu-larly to those regions in which solid metallic copper exists. The primary object of the present paper is the contribution of new information relative to the solid solubility of oxygen (or cuprous oxide) in copper at atmospheric pressure, together with certain observations in the low-pressure regions of the system. It seems appropriate also to present a brief summary of the outstanding previous work on the constitution of mixtures of copper with its lowest oxide in order to show the relation between the new facts and the system as a whole. The earliest recorded investigations of the copper-oxygen system are those of M. S. Lucas (1) § and of M. Chevillot(2) in 1819 and 1820. Lucas believed that liquid copper is capable of dissolving its oxide, but neither he nor Chevillot was able to furnish convincing proof of this property. It was not until 1866 that T. Graham° definitely established the existence of such a solubility. Nine years later W. Hampe(4) measured its extent and roughly outlined the copper-rich portion of the system. The first really precise examination of the constitutional relationship between copper and cuprous oxide, however, was that of E. Heyn(5) who in 1900 published a temperature-concentration diagram covering the range from 0 to 10 per cent of cuprous oxide at atmospheric pressure. Within these limits of composition cuprous oxide was found to dissolve in liquid copper, forming at 3.4 to 3.5 per cent a eutectic which melted at 1065° C. R. E. Slade and F. D. The paper has two parts: the field argument and the microscopic argument. The field argument indicates that either the deep chalcocite has replacea sulfide of extraordinarily easy replaceability or it is hypogene. The microscopic argumentindicates that this sulfide, if it existed, must have been hypogene bornite; that this bornite must so excel known bornite in replaceability as to constitute a new variety; that the existence of this new variety is wholly unsupported by evidence; and that the deep Butte chalcocite is therefore hypogene. IN 1900, when the public first heard of "secondary enrichment" the Butte chalcocite seemed clearly supergene. Mining, through successive regions of leached capping, bonanza sulfide, and sulfide less rich, had paused at lean bottom levels which, though chalcocite-bearing, suggested the waning of copper. The deepest chalcocite, at 1500 ft., was yet too shallow to disturb the supergene hypothesis. But, with deeper mining, lean levels yielded to fat ones. Here and there they showed, within the same vein, an inverted distribution, chalcopyrite above and chalcocite below. To the miners' astonishment, they carried chalcocite, unaffected by cross faults, on an independent course to the depth of 2500 ft. The pattern of ore distribution, hitherto revealed only in fragments, was now appearing in perspective, and, in the depth of the chalcocite, was beginning to make Butte differ from all districts where the chalcocite is indubitably supergene. The idea of hypogene origin at length came into favor; by 1913, when Sales1 advocated this origin, the argument had become a powerful one. This argument rested on field evidence; but, already, there was beginning to emerge microscopic evidence not included in this arugment. Especially pertinent was the proof that (1) The deep chalcocite lies in-mixed with bornite, often microscopic; (2) the deep chalcocite often replaces bornite; and (3) replacement of bornite by chalcocite is accom-

At the New York meeting of the Institute of Metals Division in February, 1927, Jeffries and Tarasov presented a paper on Tungsten and Thoria,' in which the experimental facts were interpreted in accordance with the prevailing point of view that the thorium is present as the oxide, thoria. In discussing that paper the writer of this article stated that his own investigations, which had been unavailable to Messrs. Jeffries and Tarasov, showed that the so-called "thoriated" tungsten filament failed to disclose any sign of the oxide when subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis, but did give plenty of evidence of the presence of metallic thorium and, in certain cases, of a material believed to be an alloy of tungsten in thorium. Since these results were completely at variance with the results reported in the paper under discussion and with other papcrs which had preceded it from time to time in the past, it was felt that further discussion should be withheld until the new evidence could be presented adequately. Arrangc-mcnts were therefore made to present that evidence at this meeting. Material Examined The material exalllined was high-ernission filament such as is used in radio tubes, supposed to contain about 0.75 per cent. thoria. The actual analysis was not stated. Scope of the Investigation The investigation was undertaken because of a feeling that the thorium present in filamentary material of this type exists as metallic thorium or as an alloy of thorium and tungsten and not as the oxide. Attention was therefore directed to determining: 1. The minimum amount of thoria detectible in a mechanical mixture of thoria powder and finely divided tungsten. 2. The amount of t.horia detectible in the filament. 3. The condition of any thorium present in other form than as thoria. 4. The amount of thorium dissolved in the tungsten.

INTRODUCTION THE correlation of property changes during precipitation with structure has progressed, sometimes rapidly but other times more slowly, since the fundamental discovery of Merica, Waltenberg and Scott.1 The predominent factor that hampered the progress has been limitations imposed by the various detection methods. Refinements in X ray diffraction techniques and in metallographic methods, which have been extended by the electron microscope, have contributed new information within the last few years. These permit an extension of the theory as proposed by Mehl and fetter in 1940.2 Now that a suffcient number of alloys has been investigated to establish a general mechanism of the precipitation process, a correlation of the facts into a generally applicable theory of age-hardening is both warranted and desirable. 'I he purpose of the paper is to provide an orderly correlation of the phenomenological facts of precipitation hardening. Speculation on mechanism of hardening will be confined to that consistent with existing theories of hardening. Age-hardening accompanies the formation of a new structure, the precipitate, as provided by an alloy system in which solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature. Upon this premise alone all such systems would be expected to include age-hardenable alloys. Alas, this is not always the case. Few attempts have been made to explain the variable degree of age-hardening among different alloys or to explain the influence of small alloying additions upon the hardening. Dispersion hardening as originally postulated3 is not adequate.* Coherency hardening-the term that will be used to distinguish the properties of a two-phase mixture in the unique and unstable transition state at which the phases are strained into precise atomic registry (continuity or coherency) in planes

YEAR after year, the kaolin industry of the United States has been setting new production records and making better products. High-grade paper, pottery, and rubber clays are produced in this country mostly in the South. Georgia alone contributes over 70 pct and South Carolina almost 20 pct of the total domestic output. Residual kaolin is mined in North Carolina, highly plastic but naturally sandy Tertiary (Eocene) potting clays are worked in north central Florida, and good white clays are produced in several other states, but the main sources of kaolin or china clay have been numerous deposits in the Tuscaloosa (Upper Cretaceous) formation. This formation of generally sandy sediments is called the Middendorf member in older geologic reports and corresponds in age with some of the New Jersey clays. As shown in fig. 1, it crops out almost continuously in a generally southwesterly direction across South Carolina and Georgia and into Alabama. Clay is mined from this formation in all three states but the principal producing centers lie within about 10 miles of a straight line drawn between Aiken, S. C., and a point about 10 miles south of Macon, Ga. The white kaolins of the South were recognized and used prior to the Civil War but suitable treatment processes were not introduced until World War I when imports, chiefly from England, were curtailed. Although imports of high-grade clays were resumed after 1918, the domestic industry managed to treble its prewar production record during the early 1920's and has continued to grow. Whereas the 1909 to 1913 average total production in the United States was only 132,104 short tons valued at $705,352 f.o.b. mines, the output in 1948 was 1,568,848 tons worth $19,756,738.

The important permanent-magnet alloys 15 years ago contained carbon and depended upon it for their permanent-magnet properties. In recent years great advances have been made in a number of new alloys substantially free of carbon. These include Remalloy,' an alloy of iron, cobalt, and molybdenum, the various iron-nickel-aluminum alloys of the Mishima2 type, and the more recent Alnico V3 in which the best properties are developed by heat-treating in a magnetic field. The Mishima and the Alnico types of alloys are very brittle and after casting must be ground to size. This article describes a permanent-magnet material4 that can be machined as cast, and when handled with some care can be rolled to thin sheet and drawn to fine wire. Optimum magnetic properties are developed by a simple heat-treatment, and at this time the ductility of the alloy disappears. If the cast alloy is heat-treated without cold-working the mag netic energy product is about 1.0 X 106. This material is called Vicalloy I (pronounced vicalloy, V for vanadium, I for iron, and C for cobalt). When the alloy is first hot-worked and then considerably reduced in area by cold-swaging, drawing or grooved rolling, it is found that after heat-treatment the magnetic energy product measured in the direction of previous extension can be increased to 2.0 to 3.5 X 106. These higher values have been obtained only after reductions in area of 75 to 95 per cent, and since the material hardens considerably during working, the reduction ordinarily can be accomplished only in fine wires, although larger sizes can be reduced by the use of powerful machinery. When the material has been cold-worked in such a manner as to improve its energy product substantially, it is called Vicalloy 11. Commercial use of Vicalloy has been made in the recording of speech. Tape 0.002 by 0.050 in. has been found superior in quality to all others tried, and is now used in the Western Electric Mirrorphone 5 In a variety of forms Vicalloy I or I1 is useful in many laboratory instruments, and in experiments in which the sizes and shapes required cannot be obtained with the other more brittle permanent-magnet materials. In 1936, during a study of other age-hardening magnetic systems, it occurred to the author that some of the iron-cobalt-vanadium alloys might be suitable for permanent magnets. The proportions of iron, cobalt, and vanadium were varied and a range of alloys of particular interest was found, as shown by the indicated area in Fig. I. The limits of this range of composition are 30 to 52 per cent iron, 36 to 62 per cent cobalt, and 4 to 16 per cent vanadium. The compositions indicated by points outside this area were also tested. AT THE New York meeting of the Institute of Metals Division in February, 1927, Jeffries and Tarasov presented a paper on Tungsten and Thoria,1 in which the experimental facts were interpreted in accordance with the prevailing point of view that the thorium is present as the oxide, thoria. DEFINITE improvement in its accident fatality rate in the coal-mining industry was recorded during 1941, based on preliminary figures for the period from January through October. Total production during this ten-month period was approximately 91 percent of the total production in all of 1940. The ten-month accident rate for both bituminous and anthracite mining in 1941 was 2.15 killed per million tons of coal mined, compared with a rate of 2.66 for the full year of 1940. The bituminous rate decreased from 2.55 in 1940 to 1.99 in ten months of 1941, and the anthracite rate from 3.62 to 3.53 in similar periods. The decrease is more apparent for the bituminous branch of the industry, as the high figure in 1940 was due to seven major disasters which brought death to 276 men. The same number of major explosions during ten months of 1941 caused only 64 lives to be lost. The severity of the explosions has been lower this year but a definite need still exists for reduction in this type of accident.

A new leasl-squares method is Presented for determining lattice parameters of hexagonal or tetragonul structures. The method is adapted for use on electronic computers and involves a reiterative procedure. The correction factor employed raries linearly with the lattice parameter, a (determined from the Brag, angle). In contrast, Cohen's method and recent modifications of it use a correction factor that varies incersely as the squure of the lattice paramneter, a. While the recent modifications attempt to improve the precision of the extrapolated lattice parameter, a, (or-cu). by stressing the importance of the weighting factor. the present approach emphasizes the need for choosing the correct extrapolation function. A comparison between the present method (the Linear method) and Cohen's method indicates that the Linear method may be more appropriale in certain cases. through a priori no critertion appears to he available for making a chorce between the methods. The size of hexagonal and tetragonal crystal lattices is determined by two parameters, a, and c,. Although in principle the two lattice parameters can be determined independently from reflections for which h - k = 0 and 1 = 0, respectively, in practice this may be inconvenient (because of the angular positions at which these reflections may occur) or not easily possible (because of low intensity). Furthermore, if a high precision or accuracy is required, the limited number of reflections of this type available, particularly in the high-angle region, is not sufficient for the necessary corrections (mainly due to absorption) to be determined with accuracy. Several methods1-7,11-13 have been proposed employing all reflections, to obtain the optimum values, a. and co, either by a trial and error procedure or a least-squares fit. Of the latter method, cohen's5 is the best known one since it provides explicit expressions for the optimum a. and c,. However, Cohen's method is only strictly valid if an extrapolation function is used that varies linearly with l/a2 or lie2 (see Section 3), a requirement that does not appear to be generally appreciated. On the other hand, all the better known and more widely used A recent trial and error method was proposed by Massalski and King8,7 who computed extensive auxiliary tables of axial ratios vs the functions A = [(4/3)(h2 + hk +k2) + l2+(a/c)2] and C = A(c/a)2 used in computing a and c values from the observed Bragg angles. These values of a and c were then plotted against a function which permitted linear extrapolation. As a criteria; for the "optimum" values, Massalski and King rely upon a visual fitting of the line through points representing reflections of low 1-index points to compute the extrapolated value of ao and high 1-index reflections to obtain CO. The successive computations and graphical plotting required to reach the "optimum" value are quite lengthy and tedious even on a desk calculator and no quantitative assurance is obtained of having in fact selected the optimum value.* If the method of Massalski and King is used on an electronic computer, then their published tables become redundant and a least-squares fit becomes a natural selection for the choice of optimum values. Such an approach will be called the Linear method. For work now in progress on the effect of certain physical variables on the lattice parameters of hexagonal crystals, it has become essential to determine the confidence limits of small changes in the lattice parameters. Since extrapolation functions that varied linearly with a and c actually also appeared to vary linearly with l/a2 or l/c2 when tested against published as well as our data, a comparison of Cohen's method and the Linear method was considered desirable (Sections 3 and 4). For the latter method an electronic computer was required since a reiterative procedure to obtain the optimum ao and co values had to be employed. The purpose of this paper is to describe the principles of the Linear method, illustrate its application, and compare it with Cohen's method. 1) THE LINEAR METHOD The standard practice in obtaining the lattice parameters in the Debye-Scherrer method is to
