In estimating the investment-value of a mining-property or plant, the value of which decreases with operation, it is often necessary to know the sum which must be set aside periodically from earnings either to renew the plant at the end of its life, or to return the capital involved when the earningpower of the investment has ceased. In such cases it is manifestly incorrect simply to divide the total amount to be retired by the 'number of periods (usually years) during which the investment shall be active, as the sums periodically withdrawn have a certain interest-earning power varying with the length of time they are held and with the opportunities afforded for their investment. But though the interest may be considered to accumulate regularly year by year, yet the rules and tables for compouiid interest do not apply, owing to the addition of a fixed amount of new money to the total at the beginning of each period. Briefly stated, the problem of sinking-funds is, to find the amount of money which must be periodically set aside at a certain rate of interest, regularly compounded, to yield a certain sum in a given length of time. In most practical cases the interest is compounded and the fresh amount added at the same time—usually once a year—and on this basis the problem may be solved as follows : Let S = total amount to be retired, Let T = interest rate : R = 1 + r, Let n = life of tlie sinking-fund or the amortization-period, Let L = the sum set aside at the end of each year. Then the amouilt of the sinking-fund at the end of first year is 2, which at the end of n years will have illcreased by compound interest to IRn-l. PURPOSE OF STUDY The case study was initiated because of the very real need to provide the best mineral inventory block estimates possible for the relatively new Sacaton mine. Sufficient mining had been done and records kept whereby it was possible to test the various estimation methods against detailed blasthole samples taken during mining. Three estimation methods were selected for testing: (1) the polygonal method, (2) the inverse distance squared method (IDS), and (3) the geostatistical kriging method. The results of the comparative analysis was thought to have very practical application to the selection of extension functions for future estimation of grade for mineral inventory blocks. GENERAL GEOLOGIC DESCRIPTION The porphyry copper deposit of the Sacaton open pit mine is related to small quartz monzonite intrusives of Laramide age which have been intruded into Precambrian granites. Both rock types act as host for the mineralization, which has been secondarily enriched sufficiently to constitute ore. The chalcocite enriched zone has been subjected to postenrichment oxidation processes with consequent partial destruction of the chalcocite blanket. Several mineralogical populations are represented in the total ore zone, but the blocks on the mine benches involved in the study were restricted to the top of the enriched zone. COMPUTATION OF MINERAL INVENTORY BLOCK ESTIMATES In order to make valid comparisons among the three estimation techniques, all of the inventories were prepared from diamond drill assay data used in the original engineering feasibility study. INTRODUCTION Behavior of joints in rock and interfaces in structures and geological media subjected to static and cyclic loading play an important role in analysis and design of structures founded on rock and soil foundations. The objectives of this paper are (1) to describe a device that can permit laboratory testing of joints and interfaces under translational and torsional motions, (2) to present procedures for constitutive modelling of joints and interfaces with a typical example of modelling of a concrete-sand interface, and (3) to give brief details of the proposed research plans for cyclic testing and modelling of joints in concrete as a simulation of joints in rock. The subject of testing and modelling of interfaces and joints is wide in scope, and in view of space limitations, it is not possible to provide a comprehensive review herein. Hence, only a few references, particularly relevant to the ongoing research by the authors and co-workers are included; a review of the subject can be found in (Desai, 1981) and (Heuze and Barbour, 1982). Although there can be (minor) differences in modelling for the behavior of joints and interfaces, the basic procedures can be considered to be essentially similar. Now onwards in this paper, the term joints will be used to imply both joints and interfaces. IN an effort to understand high cycle fatigue, as well as to study the mechanism of fracture in general, a number of researches have been undertaken whereby the fracture properties of a metal have been determined under conditions of repeated cyclic prestsain employing high strains with relatively few cycles. Liu, Lynch, Ripling, and Sachs' showed the effect of a definite strain history consisting of small increments of tensile or compressive prestrain upon the flow and fracture characteristics of metals after a limited number of repeated loadings. Liu and SachsW emonstrated by cyclic straining of the aluminum alloy 24s-T4 that the least reduction in ductility was obtained when the compressive stress was nearly equal to the tensile stress. Attempts have been made to correlate the reduction in ductility under such prestraining with conventional fatigue data, as was done by Liu and co-workers.' The following research was conducted to determine if such reduction as has been noted could be correlated with conventional fatigue data or whether the effect resulted from causes extraneous to the basic mechanism of fatigue failure such as strain aging. It might be pointed out in this connection that the reduction in ductility has occurred in alloys that might be susceptible to strain aging or similar behavior, such as alloy 24s-T4. In the present investigation, the test specimens were prepared from the aluminum alloy 75s-T6 and annealed electrolytic copper. Alloy 75s-T6 is a complex precipitation hardenable alloy, whereas electrolytic copper would not be expected to exhibit strain aging effects, particularly at room temperature. The experimental procedure consisted of prestraining test specimens repeatedly by increasing tension in small increments to various total prestrain values, followed by testing to failure in a tension test. The prestraining as well as the final testing was performed on a tensile machine using special fixtures9 0 maintain concentricity of the specimens. After prestraining, the specimens were unloaded as rapidly as possible and immediately reloaded so that the total time lapse between strains was held to a few seconds. Logarithmic or true natural strain was used in all calculations. The results are presented in Figs. 1 and 2. In Fig. 1, the retained ductility, area after prestrain area at fracture is plotted against the tensile prestrain, initial area area after prestrain as abscissa with the number of stress reversals executed to attain the required prestrain plotted as parameter. CHURN drilling equipment at Bagdad consists of two Bucyrus Erie 27-T model drills and one 22-T drill with gasoline engines. The drilling tools weigh approximately 1600 lb. The holes are drilled with 7-in. bits which are heated in an oil burning furnace and sharpened in an electrically powered bit sharpener. A service truck brings the bits to the drills and takes the dull bits back to the shop. The bits weigh around 250 lb. when new and are handled by drill crews without any mechanical handling device. When the management decided to start open- pit operations in 1945 the ruggedness of the terrain was one factor that led to the purchase of the small 22-T model drill. The orebody lies on both sides of Copper Creek Canyon. The sides of the canyon are steep and are cut by numerous narrow branch gullies. The drill had to travel over roads that were narrow and steep. It proved adequate for drilling the capping formation and is still in use.

Several investigations in recent years have shown that drilling rates are increased significantly with increased hydraulic horsepower. But, there has been no over-all method of designing jet-bit programs that efficiently uses the surface power. A study of present practices indicates that frequently as little as 50 per cent of the possible effects at the bit are used. Some observers have indicated that the best utilization of hydraulic horsepower (maximum effect on drilling rate) occurs when the bit hydraulic horsepower is maximum; others have stated that jet impact force is more important, and others have believed that maximum jet velocity is required. Limited efforts to date have shown some optimum conditions for bit hydraulic horsepower and impact, but these conditions cannot exist during drilling of a large part of the hole and do not provide a basis for designing a complete jet-bit program. This paper shows the maximum obtainable bit horsepower, impact force and jet velocity at all depths, taking into account the limitations of the pump, piping, hole and minimum circulating rate for adequate cuttings removal. Ranges of operation are developed; and flow rates, surface pressure and bit pressures are specified for each range to provide a maximum of any one of the desired effects. It also is shown that, by proper selection of nozzle sizes and by following the rules presented, the maximum obtainable quantities can be effectively utilized from surface to total depth. Finally, a simple graphical method of selecting nozzle sizes and flow rates is presented which can be used with familiar bit-company hydraulic tables and calculators to design jet-bit programs for maximum bit hydraulic horsepower, impact or jet velocity, as desired. These programs make most effective use of the pumps. Heretofore, there was no method available for designing field tests which adequately separated the effects of bit horsepower, impact and jet velocity. The programs and procedures developed in the paper are dissimilar and, when used in future field testing, should demonstrate which program is the most important in obtaining the fastest drilling rate. INTRODUCTION During the past decade, rig hydraulics has come into increasing prominence. There has been a definite trend toward providing higher horsepower pumps, jet-type bits have had increased use, numerous investigators"" have reported increased drilling rates as a result of increased hydraulics, and bit manufacturers have provided tablesa-" and calculators that are now commonly used 10 design jet-bit programs. Opinion has varied as to the hydraulic quantity which has the great- est effect on drilling rate. Papers and data have been presented that show pump horsepower,'9 it hydraulic horsepower and jet impact force,' each to be the most significant factor affecting drilling rate. Examinatibn of jet-bit programs of the bit companies indicates emphasis on jet velocity. Only pump horsepower can be eliminated because it can be used to produce any one of the bit effects which, a priori, must be more relevant factors. This contradictory state of opinion and practice regarding the bit effects is unfortunate, but several published references have been concerned with making one or another of the factors maximum; and, because these in each case have given results applicable to only intervals of the hole drilled, there seems to be ample reason to complete the previous efforts. It also is believed that the differences in programs for each effect, where they exist, should be delineated so that future use may determine which hydraulic effect is the more relevant. It is the purpose of this paper to: (1) show the theoretical maximum bit hydraulic horsepower, jet impact force and jet velocity available at all depths, taking into consideration all necessary restrictions on operating conditions; (2) illustrate procedures by which the maximum available horsepower, impact force or veIocity may be obtained; and (3) present a graphical method for rapid selection of jet-nozzle sizes and flow rates to be used with conventional procedures to design jet-bit programs for maximum bit horsepower, impact force or velocity as desired.

This coal area, and the coal from a limited portion of it, has been known for a long time. In 1817, McClure prepared a geological map to represent the boundaries, and they are not controverted at the present date. In 1834, Richard C. Taylor made a survey and report on portions of the basin. In 1835, Prof. W. B. Rogers was appointed by the State of Virginia to make a geological survey, and made six annual reports in which this area was included; but the reports and maps were not published. R. C. Taylor's Statistics of Coal, published in 1855, gave to the public the details of exploration and production, to date, very perfectly and completely. Daddorw and Bannan's work, Coal, Iron, and Oil, published in 1866, repeated the details before given, and advanced some vague theories respecting the coal-field, but gave no new facts. Macfarlane's work, Coal Regions of America, published in 1873, under the head of " Triassic Coal," chapter 27, gives what is known from existing publications of the position, geology, and production of the field, making

The development of a new metallurgical roasting device is described. It consists of a refractory column into which air is injected at various levels, forming several superimposed fluidized beds with no supporting grates. When pelleted zinc sulphide concentrates are charged, the roasted product needs no further sintering before reduction to metal. WHEN a gas such as air is blown upward with increasing velocities through a loose mass of solid particles, marked changes in the physical behavior of the particles are noted. At first, when the velocity of the gas is insufficient to support any of the solid, the mass constitutes a "fixed bed." As the gas velocity increases until the pressure drop through the bed approaches the effective weight of the bed per unit area, the bed expands until the solid particles are supported by the air rather than by the lower particles. Some vibration of the particles becomes apparent, but little mixing occurs. This condition is called a "quiescent fluid bed." A further increase in gas velocity imparts more separation and more motion to the individual particles until a condition of turbulence is reached. This "turbulent fluid bed" resembles a rapidly boiling liquid with the characteristic highly agitated diffuse surface and many small eruptions of the boiling mass. Different degrees of turbulence can be generated and all produce excellent mixing. The final stage occurs when the gas velocity becomes so great as to create a "dispersed suspension." Here no surface of the mass is defined and the gas carries solid particles out of their original positions. These changing conditions of fluidization have been studied carefully and pertinent nomenclature standardized by a committee of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.' Many mathematical analyses2-3 have been made of the forces acting in a fluid bed. These analyses are invaluable, especially for the design of column sizes and selection of equipment. However, in a metallurgical process involving solids of many sizes with changing densities, varying temperatures, and changing gas compositions within the bed, calculations based on theory become approximate. Optimum operating conditions then are best determined experimentally. Many applications have been made of the principles of fluid-bed action by mechanical, chemical, and metallurgical engineers. Especially when good con- tact between reacting solids and gases is desired, very effective results are obtained from fluid beds. They permit excellent temperature control and uniformity throughout a mass of solids in fluid action. Heat transfer to walls and any coolers is high, and fast reaction rates are attained because the solid surfaces are continuously swept clean. The main disadvantages of fluid-bed operations are the danger of short-circuiting in a single bed, danger of incipient sintering which stops action, the necessity of avoiding large changes in particle size or density during roasting, and dust losses when particles of the charge are carried out with exit gases. In the metallurgical field the roasting of sulphide ores to form oxides and sulphur dioxide appears to combine several operating conditions which can be achieved to advantage in a fluid bed. Roasting involves a solid-gas reaction where a high reaction rate is necessary for high capacity, where good temperature control is important in order to prevent sintering, where good heat transfer is needed, and where the density of the solids, when changing from sulphides to oxides, is not largely changed. Short-circuiting, however, constitutes a major problem when a single fluid bed is used. Because of the turbulence of the bed, an entering particle may be in the region of the discharge before it is roasted. Hence, to attain a satisfactorily low sulphur in the calcine, a long average residence time with correspondingly low capacity is required. The solution to this difficulty is the use of multiple stages, which in the conventional fluid-bed design requires separate hearths with feed and discharge mechanisms for each stage. A further practical difficulty in fluid-bed roasting of flotation zinc concentrates is their fine particle size which makes a true fluid action without excessive carry-over of dust very difficult to attain, especially when the large air volumes necessary for high capacity are used. A New Design After considerable experimentation in the laboratory and on a semipilot-plant scale, a new method and equipment for roasting were devised which provided a unique solution to these problems. S. F. EMMONS RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP. The movement was started by a number of the friends and admirers of the late S. F. Emmons, Economic Geologist of the United States Geological Survey, to perpetuate his name through a fellowship to be known as the " S. F. Emmons Research Fellowship," and they have succeeded in raising some $13,000 for the purpose of carrying on research work in economic geology. The Committee in charge of this Memorial Fund has succeeded in obtaining the co-operation of Professors Kemp, of Columbia, Irving, of Yale, and Lindgren, of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in the administration of this fellowship. These three gentlemen are respectively geologists of the institutions mentioned and are exceptionally qualified to determine in what direction the fund can be best administered. After surveying the beneficiation techniques in the Florida phosphate field, it is apparent that optimum beneficiation of this ore is a difficult task. Due to continually changing grade, size distribution and basic nature of the ore, there appears to be no universal technique nor a single reagent entirely satisfactory for achieving optimum metallurgy under these dynamic conditions. Although no major change in the basic flow sheet has been made in the last 20 years, there have been many refinements of the process in recent years which have helped increase production, improve recovery, lower unit cost of operation and make the beneficiation of lower grade deposits economically feasible. Among the significant changes is the use of larger plants and equipment which has helped to increase production significantly. The use of cyclones has facilitated and reduced the cost of slimes removal in these large plants. There have also been several new approaches to the flotation of coarse phosphate that are mentioned in the text of this paper. Lastly, significant improvements have also taken place in the area of flotation reagents.

TENNESSEE Copper Co. operates two ore concentrators, the London and Isabella mill. Copperhill, Tenn. In 1948 and 1949 the small ball mills and rake classifiers in the London concentrator were replaced by one large ball mill and one hydraulic classifier. This new ball mill was designed oversize so that it could be operated at slower than normal speed. The proper operating conditions were established and the results published.1 Later it was found that this mill operated more efficiently with a small ball charge.2 While this London grinding practice was being developed, the Isabella grinding circuit was not changed in any way. It remained a conventional two-stage rod mill-ball mill combination, the rod mill in open circuit and the ball mill in closed circuit with a rake classifier. Study of the data indicated that grinding cost could be lowered by converting to the London practice, but not enough would have been saved to warrant the expense of converting. No plan for improving this grinding operation could be developed.

Surface excavators for mining coal and such non- metallic minerals as quarry stone, gypsum, phosphate and the like have advanced tremendously in the last 50 years, and their advancement has paralleled that of excavators used in the construction industry during the same period. Up to a certain stage, the construction industry led the way with this development and even pioneered in how the equipment was used. Afterwards, however, new mining machinery and related operating techniques progressed along a different path than their construction counterparts because of the different demands of the two industries. The word "stage" as used above quite generally connotes a transition period, possibly of several years' duration, during which mining development followed the construction industry. Later, mining branched out and responded to its own needs. Most readers are familiar with the events which led to the development of the power shovel. The first dredge was recorded as having been used in England in the latter 1700's and was no doubt developed along the lines of some notes written in the late 1400's by Leonardo da Vinci.

Although preventive maintenance is not a new concept and has many proven applications, it is believed that the Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Co.'s Computerized Preventive Maintenance System is the first and possibly the only application related to heavy duty bulk material handling equipment. This paper is presented to describe the development, installation, and application of a Computerized Preventive Maintenance System applied to an 18 million t (20 million st) coal and iron storage and reclaim facility located on the shores of Lake Erie at Conneaut, Ohio.
