IN this paper, which I have the honor to submit to the Institute, it is my intention to treat especially of that part of the North Staffordshire field which converges to a long tongue in the neighborhood of Congleton, and which includes the villages of New Chapel, Ford Green, Norton, Biddulph, Bradley Green, Gillow Heath, and the immediate vicinity. My object is not so much to give a minute description of the geology or systems of mining and smelting, as by a general review, some idea of the extraordinary facilities for the production of excellent iron, which have enabled this district to maintain its position more successfully than any of its rivals against the late depression in trade. The North Staffordshire coal field has the Cheshire and Lancashire fields some thirty-five miles to the north, those of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire forty miles to the east, those of South Staffordshire and Shropshire, about thirty miles to the south, and the Denbighshire and Flintshire fields some forty miles to the west. It is highly probable that the coal continues under the new red sandstone to the Western and Southern fields as the dips on both sides, and absence of large faults, make it impossible to come to any other conclusion. In a section of this coal field, from Chatterly to Whitfield, thirty-two workable seams of coal are shown, of an aggregate thickness of 130 feet, varying from 2 feet 6 inches to 7 feet, and thirteen seams of ironstone, 24 feet, averaging from 2 to 4 feet. All of these seams have been minutely described in a paper by Mr. Charles J. Homer, read in 1875 before the British Iron and Steel Institute. In the northern part, to which I especially wish to direct your attention, the beds lie in a V-shaped basin, the underlying millstone grit and Yoredale rocks rising and forming escarpments on either side of the valley containing the coal. Throughout this district, at the outcrop of the coal, there are indications of old workings. In all, 127 producing oil wells, 8 producing gas wells and 212 dry holes were drilled during 1936 in the Central Texas area; 76 wells in Bexar County, 62 in Caldwell County, 44 in Guadalupe County, 22 in Williamson County, 20 in Navarro County and 20 in Frio County. Less than 20 were drilled in each of the other counties and none at all in Ellis, Hill, Bosque, Coryell, Lampasas, Burnet, Llano, Kennedy, Mason, Real, Kinney and Uvalde Counties. The Pearsall-Austin chalk field in Frio County and the Zoboroski field in Guadalupe County were the only new discoveries and there were no important extensions to old fields. In this report Corsicana, Mildred (Elm Ridge), Angus-Edens-Hodge, Burke, and Rice-Oil Ridge, all shallow Navarro County stripper fields, are grouped together under the name of Corsicana. This grouping follows that of the Railroad Commission of Texas, thus facilitating the gathering of production data. A map showing the location of the oil and gas fields in the Central Texas Area was published in Volume 114 of the A.I.M.E. TranBactions, page 380. New Fields Pearsall-Austin Chalk.—The Amerada Petroleum Corporation completed 13 Austin chalk wells during 1936 on the large Amerada-Rycade block in Frio County. Other companies drilled two dry holes to the Austin chalk in this vicinity. Not enough wells were drilled to give control of the structure but it appears to be a nose plunging in a west-southwest direction. A second deep test is being drilled in the Pearsall area and at this writing has cemented off a show of oil and gas in the Edwards limestone. The Humble Oil and Refining Co. is building a 6-in. pipe line from Lytle, Tex., to serve the Pearsall field. Zoboroski.—Actual discovery of the Zoboroski field was made by W. J. Walton et al. in 1931. The discovery well, Anton Zoboroski No. 1, was a small producer making but from 3 to 5 bbl. per day, which was used locally for fuel oil. The fluid mapper, a model relatively new to the petroleum industry, was used to study the effect of various mobility ratios on the areal sweepout efficiency for two typical spacing patterns. The experiments indicated the areal sweepout for the five-spot pattern varied from 51.8 per cent at a mobility ratio of 0.093 to 89.1 per cent for a ratio of 24.4. In the direct line-drive pattern, the areal sweepout varied from 58.7 per cent at a mobility ratio of 0.089 to 92.0 per cent at a ratio of 24.8. The fluid mapper may prove useful to determine quickly the effective areal sweepout for any well spacing. INTRODUCTION The effect of the mobility ratio on the areal sweepout efficiency during primary depletion of a water drive reservoir and during secondary recovery operations has recently become more widely recognized The mobility ratio, M, is defined as: _ kjp (displaced fluid) k/u (displacing fluid) where k = effective permeability u = viscosity When the displacing fluid is miscible with the displaced fluid, the permeabilities are equal and the mobility ratio may be expressed as a ratio of viscosities: u (displacing fluid) u (displaced fluid) The mathematical analysis for calculating the areal sweepout efficiency with mobility ratio other than unity is quite tedious.5,11 An experimental method by using a potentiometric model2 in a step-wise manner and in using an X-ray shadowgraph model3,12 with continuous fluid flow has been published. Several types of models have been used to study oil and gas reservoir performance. These models may be classified as physical, electrolytic, potentiometric, X-ray shadowgraph, and fluid mapper. The X-ray shadowgraph and fluid mapper are models relatively new to petroleum engineering and have not been used extensively for specific applications. The theory of the fluid mapper indicates it may be adapted to a study of areal sweepout efficiencies for various mobility ratios as well as other complex problems in petroleum engineering. The use of the model and results obtained when using displacing and displaced fluids of equal densities but different viscosities are discussed. FLUID MAPPER DEVELOPMENT H. S. Hele-ShawV eveloped a fluid mapper model based on the hydrodynamic theory. This theory is that in the steady flow of a viscous fluid between horizontal parallel plates spaced a very small distance apart, the effect of viscous shear is of such magnitude in the vertical plane that the motion in the horizontal plane is practically undisbrted streamline flow. Techniques developed by Hele-Shaw were not expanded and no additional developments in fluid mapper models were forthcoming until A. D. Moore, University of Michigan, published a series of papers starting in 1949, which describe the construction of a flexible and inexpensive model'h nd the fluid mapper technique for the solution of certain problems.' Three very small deposits of plastic clays have been discovered within the limits of the Archoean rocks. These are not refractory and of little importance, excepting in a geological consideration. They have resulted from a decomposition of the feldspars of the rock in situ, and they have been classified as inferior kaolins.

The Bemco mine area is within the Precambrian igneous and metamorphic rock terrain of the New Jersey Highlands province. Rocks In the area include a pyroxene granite, a hornblende granite, a quartz-oligoclase gneiss and a pegmatite and its host rock, a lens of amphibolite which becomes a sulfide-rich pyroxenite near the ore zone. The ore-bearing zone occurs along the hanging wall and foot-wall contact of the pegmatite which was emplaced discordantly into the amphibolite-pyroxenite.

Originally round tensile specimens of a eutectic Zn-A1 alloy develop elliptical cross sections during superplastic deformation. This observation, coupled with a detailed study of the microstructure and preferred orieniation, suggests that crystallographic slip and continuous grain boundary migration or re-crystallization are important processes during super-plastic deformation. In spite of the extensive activity in superplasticity1-15 and the numerous explanations proposed, no single model has had universal acceptance. It has been established, however, that the general requirements for superplastic extension of two-phase alloys include an extremely fine, stabilized grain size of the order of a few microns, a temperature about equal to or greater than one-half the melting point, a critical range of strain rate, and a similarity in the mechanical strength of the major phases. The proposed models can perhaps best be characterized in terms of the important phenomena associated with them. These phenomena include: phase instability,1 diffusional creep by volume diffusion3 or grain boundary diffusion4,5 slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion,= grain boundary Sliding,7-9,13,14 and dislocation glide.'5 In this paper, experimental observations will be reported which support a model involving slip and continuous grain boundary migration or recrystalliza-tion. Specifically, a correlation will be made between this model and the development of elliptical cross sections as originally round specimens are superplas-tically deformed. For the most part, superplasticity studies have been conducted with eutectic or eutectoid alloys. Probably the most thoroughly studied material has been the monotectoid Zn-A1 alloy.1,2,6,12,13,15 No attention to the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy has previously been reported, and the results discussed in this paper represent part of a general study of the superplastic properties of this alloy. MATERIALS The alloys used in this investigation were prepared by melting appropriate quantities of 99.99+ pct A1 and 99.999 pct Zn in air, mixing, and pouring into a water- cooled stainless-steel mold. Wet-chemical analysis was conducted with each heat of alloy prepared, using the procedure of Fish and smith.16 The composition of the eutectic alloy was 95.1 wt pct Zn. Ingots about 2 in. thick were rolled to 0.4-in. plate at about 300°C with a reduction of 5 to 10 pct per pass. Specimens were machined from the plate with the tensile axis parallel to the rolling direction. The specimens were round, with 0.150-in.-diam, 1.25-in.-long gage length, and 0.25-in.-diam threaded grip sections. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were mounted inside a uniform-temperature quartz tube which was surrounded by a double elliptical radiant furnace with a 12-in.-long uniform-temperature hot zone and a low thermal capacity. The tube extended through the top and bottom of the furnace and permitted rapid quenching of the loaded specimens when quickly filled with cold water at the conclusion of the test. The quench precluded any effects on specimen microstructure from a normal, slow cool. Constant stress was applied to test specimens by suspending a load on a constant stress cam of the type described by Hopkin.17 The design of this cam permitted application of a constant stress for elongations up to 200 pct. For greater elongation, approximately constant stress conditions were maintained by systematically reducing the load manually. RESULTS As part of an investigation of the superplastic properties of the eutectic Zn-A1 alloy, evidence was obtained for the development of elliptically shaped cross sections as originally round specimens were extended. For example, after an elongation of about 100 pct, a round specimen with an initial diameter of 0.150 in. became elliptical with major and minor axis of 0.128 and 0.88 in., respectively. Photographs are presented to illustrate the ellipticity developed during superplastic deformation, Fig. 1. The specimen shown was deformed at a stress of 500 psi, at a temperature of 285°C, and a strain rate of 2.28 x 10-2 min-1. It has long been accepted that blastfurnace practice varies to some degree with the coke used. While the qualities desirablc in iron have been known for some time, the qualities in coke that produce such iron have not been established. There are no objective standards for blast-furnace coke, which is usually described in general terms, as good or bad. Many experienced operators believe that coke cannot be measured objectively except by using it in the furnace, noting the result, and labeling the coke according to furnace operations. This is admittedly unscientific, and besides is useless for the two main purposes for which a measure of coke quality is needed: (I) to produce the best possible coke from the coals and equipment on hand; (2) to test new coals and determine their value for blast-furnace coke. In seeking such an objective measure, much work has been done on tumbler tests, shatter tests, sizes of coke, porosity, specific gravity, reactivity or combustibility and other tests, but as yet very little has been published in which conclusive correlations have been established between such objective measures and furnace operation. In our study of the problem during the past 8 years we have developed no new measures of coke quality, but we have collected data that are presented here in the hope that they may assist in further work, so that at some future time there may be developed such positive measures. The purpose of this paper is to show that there are variations in coke and that such variations do influence the operation of blast furnaces. At the same time we must remember that there are variations in blastfurnace operation and it may be the blast furnace that is at fault. This correlation of coke properties with blast-furnace operation will be worked out in the following steps: . Discussion of a period when a change in the coke resulted in an increase in efficiency on one furnace and a decrease in efficiency on another. 2. Adaptation of the inefficient furnace to the available coke so that normal efficiency was restored. 3. The use of radial distribution: a discussion of the effect of size of ore layer in adapting blast-furnace operation to the coke. 4. An example of a change in size of coke and the detrimental influence on the pro duction of one furnace. 5. An example of a change in size of coke, together with manufacturing data, to show why it changed, the conclusion being that coke is a product with an optimum value. 6. Illustration of the fact that coke has different optimum values on two furnaces, with discussion on adaptation of operation so the optimum values will be the same. 7. In the past few years, a new system has been developed for ventilating longwall panels in some gassy coal mines in the Northern West Virginia area. This system utilizes a five or six foot diameter air shaft to ventilate a group of three or more longwall panels dependent on conditions. This shaft exhausts all the air needed to, ventilate the active longwall and adjacent gob areas. By law, this bleeder fan can handle double the maximum methane concentration allowed in a normal return air course. As a result, the methane that must be diluted by the primary ventilation circuits is reduced. This new ventilation system was first conceived by mine management as a means of coping with a sudden shift in production mode that occurred a few years ago. Formerly, production often consisted of room and pillar mining with continuous miners. The high methane liberation rate was handled by driving entries around a large block of coal prior to mining. This isolated the future mining area from the adjacent coal seam and allowed a major portion of the trapped in situ methane to bleed off. Also, these bleeders served to exhaust return air from the mining area. Once the bleeders were established, productive mining could start. When the decision was made to shift production mode from continuous miners to longwall mining, some of the bleeders did not encompass large enough unmined areas under the old ventilation system to initiate longwall production. Also, many other established continuous miner section bleeders were either improperly positioned or too restricted for longwall ventilation. Unfortunately, standard bleeder development can take up to two years' time. In order to eliminate the old style bleeder system and maintain or increase the margin of safety for ventilation, the bleeder shaft system was conceived. With this system, the only entries developed are those necessary for the longwall, significantly reducing the production delay. In this area, the Pittsburgh #8 coal seam dips to the northwest. As a result of this dip, the bleeder shaft is constructed in the northernmost set of tailgate entries. In this manner, groundwater accumulations can be pumped to the surface and bleeder entries kept dry. During the initial longwall entry development, the bleeder fan can be used to ventilate entries adjacent to virgin coal where significant methane liberation often occurs. Once longwall production starts, the bleeder shaft exhausts the entire air quantity necessary to safely ventilate the longwall. As the bleeder entries deteriorate, the air quantity and pressure characteristics must be increased. The extreme flexibility of the centrifugal fan used at the surface allows the air quantity and pressure to be adjusted without stopping the fan. This improves safety by decreasing the possibility of a methane buildup resulting from the fan being out of service. The bleeder shaft system of ventilation, developed by mine management in Northern West Virginia, can provide a safe means for effectively ventilating longwall panels in excessively gassy mines. This system should be considered where mining conditions are comparable.

THE purpose of a symposium, I take it, is to gather together a group interested in a common intellectual field, in order to exchange views, and to appraise the state of knowledge. Symposia are the more successful, the greater the activity in the chosen field and the wider the range of applicability of the information gained. From time to time, as emphasis changes from one field of research to another, a given subject may enjoy popularity and later retire into a scientific somnolence, for fashions change even among engineers and scientists. The subject of this symposium, however, enjoys the advantages of wide applicability and of high current interest and productivity in results. It is a timely subject for a symposium; with much new information, surely metallurgical engineers should now devote an increasing attention to its application to practice. In beginning the symposium, I shall attempt briefly to appraise our basic knowledge in the field, to survey instances of practical usefulness, and to suggest where new work might be most productive of useful results. There are many examples of direct practical application of diffusion knowledge, and it is the purpose of the several papers in this symposium to review these. In this introduction I shall attempt to take a broad view, which, while it will but poorly serve the engineer in the solution of any given problem, may perhaps be of some use in assessing the state of knowledge in this field. RATE OF DIFFUSION Liquid Metals The process of diffusion among liquid metals, of gases in liquid or solid metals, or among solid metals, is ubiquitous, to say the least. The manufacture of alloys by the intermelting of metals, the addition of ferroalloys to molten steel, the deoxidation of molten alloys, all involve diffusion in the liquid state. The oxidation of molten copper for purposes of purification, the unsought oxidation of alloys generally during melting and casting, the reaction of liquid steel with oxidizing slags in the open-hearth furnace, the absorption of nitrogen by liquid steel, particularly in the bessemer furnace, all operate by the diffusion of gases in liquid metals. These processes have not been studied much from the viewpoint of rates of diffusion. Alloys are made by melting metals with stirring and with allowance of time for mixing (which is diffusion) but I know of no studies that seem to define the necessary times, and though in only very rare cases can faulty properties of the finished castings be ascribed to inadequate mixing, and though certainly in most cases, with stirring, the rate of diffusion is adequate to give sufficient mixing, a more quantitative treatment would be good to have. It is not wholly certain that thorough and sufficient mixing is at all times attained, for I suspect that ferroalloy additions to steel, and that additions of aluminum to steel as a deoxidizer, especially in the sampling of steels

This paper describes the field opeturluns at the Fry in situ combustion project in Crawford County, 111. Field operations may be divided into three phases—-preliminary engineering studies of 1960 and 1961, ignition, and, finally, operation of the test. The Fry combustion project was a pilot test of cocur-rent in situ combustion on a 3.3-acre inverted five-spot. In the summer of 1960, air injection tests were conducted using old wells in the area and a new air injection well drilled especially for the test. In the summer of 1961, four new oil wells were drilled on a 3.3-acre pattern for the pilot test. All old wells in the near vicinity of the pilot test were abandoned to preclude any possibility of gas escaping to adjacent formations. A compressor plant was also installed at the test site in 1961. Air injection tests and other engineering studies were made. At the conclusion of these tests, ignition was accomplished with a 40 kw electrical igniter. Operation of the Fry combustion test was little different from the usual oilfield operation with the exception of the high rate of air injection. No difficulty was found with the openhole completion. There were no unusual corrosion or emulsion problems until bottom-hole temperatures exceeded 150F. Four cores were drilled into the burned-out portion of the reservoir with no mechanical difficulties. INTRODUCTION A cocurrent or conventional in situ combustion test was conducted on the Fry unit of the Marathon Oil Co., in Crawford County, Ill. Besides testing combustion in the Fry type of reservoir, the test was intended to evaluate various operating procedures. This paper presents a discussion of the Fry combustion test field operations. The geology of the reservoir and the test performance are discussed in other papers.'.' HISTORY OF THE FRY UNIT The Fry unit consists of 11 leases totaling 337 acres in an area in which oil was originally discovered in 1906. Production from this reservoir, as from all Robinson sand reservoirs in the area, was very high during the first few years. As the dissolved-gas energy was dissipated, early attempts to retard the decline consisted of vacuum, air, and gas repressuring, and recently, most of the area has been subjected to water flooding. Following early air repressuring, the Fry waterflood unit was formed and water flooding initiated in July, 1952. In the area in which the Fry combustion test was conducted, a peripheral water flood of a 160-acre area was developed as shown in Fig. 1. Between 1956 and 1960, it became apparent that the water flood was unsuccessfd. In looking for a suitable site for an in situ combustion test, the Marathon Oil Co. selected the Fry unit as possessing those features most desirable for such a research project. Field operations associated with the Fry combustion test began in the spring of 1960.

In a series of papers the author and associates have discussed the influence of temperature on the tensile properties of metals.11-18 These papers present much information about the influence of temperature and the stress system on the conventional indices of mechanical properties, with special attention to the fracture stress. A recent study of the data, however, has revealed much additional information about the influence of temperature on the fundamental factors involved in the flow of metals. The present paper presents results of this study. Attention will be confined almost entirely to results derived from tension tests of unnotched cylindrical specimens at strain rates a little slower than those used in ordinary tension tests. According to a concept first presented by Ludwik and elaborated in recent papers by others,8,9,22,23 the mechanical state of a metal depends on the total plastic strain, but not on the temperature during straining, provided that the only structural changes are those essential to plastic deformation. In the summer of 1948, however, the author made the previously mentioned study of results of a general investigation by the author and associates and reached the conclusion that the mechanical state depends not only on the total strain, but also on the temperature during the straining. A number of diagrams were then prepared. These conclusions were presented without diagrams in a discussion last October of a paper by Dorn, Goldberg and Tietz.2 The metals used in the investigation on which this paper is based were Monel and oxygen-free copper. The Monel was supplied by the International Nickel Co. through the courtesy of Dr. W. A. Mudge. The copper was supplied by the Scomet Engineering Co. through the courtesy of Dr. Sidney Rolle. The data to be presented are based on results of tests at temperatures ranging between 165 and — 188°C. Description of the apparatus and methods of test are given in previous papers.1011'1"2 The present paper is the first part of the general discussion of the influence to temperature on the stress-strain-energy relationship for metals. The next paper will deal with metals that are subject to structural changes other than those induced solely by plastic deformation. Influence of Temperature and Plastic Strain on the Flow Stress of Monel and Copper For a study of the influence of temperature on the stress-strain relationship, flow-stress curves obtained with annealed metals at various temperatures will be compared with curves obtained with the same metals after cold drawing or cold rolling at room temperature. Diagrams thus obtained with Monel and copper are shown in Fig 1 to 8. Fig 1 to 7 show the variation of the flow stress with temperature and plastic strain; Fig 8 is a diagram of a different type, derived from Fig 4 to 7. In Fig 1 to 7 strain is expressed in terms of A0/A, in which A0, and A represent the initial and current areas of cross-section. Since values of Ao/A are represented on a logarithmic scale, abscissas are proportional to true strains; moreover, the true strains representing prior plastic deformation and those representing subsequent strain during a tension test are directly additive. Fig 1 shows flow-stress curves obtained with annealed Monel. Five of the curves are based on results of tension tests. Between yield and the maximum load, the flow was under longitudinal tensile stress; between the maximum load and fracture, the local contraction induced transverse radial tensile stress. The portions of curves designated F, therefore, represent flow with increasing radial stress ratio, the ratio of the transverse stress S3 to the longitudinal stress Si. Curve Fo is based on the ultimate stresses of specimens taken from bars that had been cold drawn various amounts.17 Since the tensile stress at the maximum load is unidirectional, curve Fo represents the course that a flow-stress curve would take if the stress during an entire tension test could be kept unidirectional. The flow-stress curve F obtained at room temperature (Fig 1) has been established accurately by numerous measurements of the diameter of the specimen during the extension from yield to fracture.17 At the time of the experiments, however, no apparatus was available for measuring the diameter during tension tests at low temperatures. Nevertheless, curves have been established to represent with sufficient accuracy the flow at low temperatures. This article describes the evaluation of a new geophysical technique used to map fractures between boreholes: electromagnetic geotomography used in conjunction with salt water tracers. An experiment has been performed in a granitic rock mass. Geotomographic images have been generated and compared with borehole geophysical data: neutron logs, acoustic velocity logs, caliper logs and acoustic televiewer records. Comparisons between the images and the geophysical logs indicate that clusters of fractures were detected but single fractures were not.

Over the past ten years a series of investigations have been conducted to determine some of the physical processes involved in breaking rock with confined concentrated charges. Detailed discussions of many of these investigations have been published elsewhere.1-6 Laboratory experiments made by other investigators using Hopkinson pressure-bar techniques have shown that solid materials are fractured in tension by the reflection of an incident compressive stress pulse at a free surface.7-12 In these tests a small charge of explosive is placed in contact with one end of a bar. Detonation produces some plastic flow and crushing of the bar near the charge and generates a compressive stress pulse that travels along the length of the bar. At the free end of the bar the compressive stress pulse is reflected back into the bar as a tensile stress pulse. If the tensile strength of the bar is exceeded during this reflection process, a tensile fracture normal to the length of the bar is produced, and the broken end of the bar moves forward with a constant velocity equal to the average particle velocity trapped in the broken fragment. The new surface formed by the fracture becomes the new free end of the bar that reflects the remaining portion of the incident compressive stress pulse. This process is repeated any number of times until all of the incident stress pulse is reflected.
