Since most modern metallurgical plants are operated continuously and on a large scale, successful operation at maximum efficiency demands that an accurate knowledge of the performance at each stage of the process be available at all times. Quantitative analyses provide the most practical process guides, and it is essential to have analytical procedures that combine accuracy and speed. In continuous plant operations, large losses may occur if the time interval between the development of trouble at any stage and its recognition and correction is great. Many metallurgical plants are using rapid colorimetric and spectrochemical methods of analyses for control purposes. So-called "color coppers" may be cited as an example of the colorimetric methods, in contrast with- the routine use of the ultraviolet spectrograph for the analysis of steels.42 By means of this more refined spectrochemical procedure, a complete quantitative analysis of the molten metal is obtained every few minutes. During the past two years the Physics Division and the Ore Dressing Laboratory of the American Cyanamid Company's Stamford Research Laboratories have collaborated in a study of the use of spectrochemical methods for the analysis of various metallurgical products. New methods have been developed, which have proved of practical value in plant operation. The following pages give a general review of the principles of spectrochemical methods and also the details of several specific analyses. Principles of Spectrochemical Analysis In general, it can be said that a visible light spectrochemical analysis can be performed for any ion or molecule that is naturally colored, or that can be made to react with another to produce a colored salt or complex. Whereas transmission measurements in the ultraviolet and infrared portions of the spectrum are most useful for the analysis of organic molecules, * visible light measurements are of particular value for metal salts. Such elements as copper, manganese, cobalt, nickel, iron, molybdenum, vanadium, chromium, phosphorus, mercury, zinc, lead, and a great many others, can now be determined with a high degree of sensitivity, accuracy and dispatch. From the simplest of qualitative determinations, color analyses have been improved to such an extent that, at the present time, through the use of recording spectrophotometers, hundreds of accurate quantitative analyses can be performed by a single analyst during an 8-hr. day after the standardization curves have been established for the ions to be determined.

In Austria's only producing field, at Zistersdorf, Erdoel Produktions-gesellschaft completed a single new producer, its well Gosting 6 coming in early in October for an average production of about 15 tons daily. For further testing within the proved part of the field this company's Gosting 7 was at the close of the year drilling in Pannonian strata at 760 m., and its Gosting 8 was rigging up. Outside of the proved area of the Zistersdorf field two further tests located on the Steinberg dome failed to find production in the known oil-bearing strata of the Sarmatian, and were deepened as wildcats into the Cretaceous Flysch. The first of these, Neusiedel 1, about one kilometer north of the known producing area, found oil in the Flysch beds at a depth of 1290 m. for an initial production of about 10 tons per day. The second test, Windisch Baumgarten la, is an old well previously considered a failure, which when deepened achieved a production of about 5 tons per day in the Flysch Inoceramus beds at 985 m. Neither of the foregoing wells is producing from a stratigraphically definable horizon, oil accumulation in the Flysch of this area being apparently controlled by tectonic breccias or related crevices.

That variations in the humidity of the air and in the moisture content of a mixture of broken solids being separated electrostatically cause trouble is not new.' Much of the reputation for unreliability commonly ascribed to the electrostatic separation processes is probably due to this one factor alone. Some operators dry thoroughly before separating; and while this is good in many instances, there are others in which it is not the remedy for trouble. Some mixtures behave best in very dry air and with the mixtures fed to the separator while hot to reduce the adsorbed water content. On the other hand, an overdried mixture on coming to equilibrium with more humid air, has been known to take up moisture selectively on one family of particles, as of coal in the presence of slate and clay, and give sharper electrostatic separation. From these observations it is concluded that there is a permissible moisture content for a particle and also for the atmosphere surrounding it, if in equilibrium, at which the particle will have a conductivity or cntact potential2-4 that is ideal for electrostatic separation. This permissible moisture content varies between a wide range of limits for the different materials that are are and with the kind of electrostatic separating process used. Water can be present as a result of adsorption and condensation from the atmosphere, as an accumulation before or during mining, or as a residue from a previous process step. The water may exist as a liquid film or as an adsorbed layer of vapor. If the water exceeds permissible limits it must be removed. Its state determines the method. Drying by evaporation is necessary for adsorbed water, for part of the liquid-film water (that is, up to several percent of the dry weight), and for free water in the internal structure. Large water contents may be removed by drainage Or filtration. At just what point mechanical removal should cease and drying by evaporation begin depends upon the method of mechanical removal and its cost. Particles can also be separated according to their differences in dielectric constant when suspended in a liquid of intermediate dielectric constant. Recovery of this liquid presents a a problem' Permissible Moisture The adsorbed moisture on the outer surface of minerals can be quickly removed or replaced. Accordingly, in speaking of adsorbed moisture contents, either that of the solid or that of the surrounding air may be considered, the two values being connected by a distribution coefficient which varies with the temperature. However, such a condition does not necessarily exist in processes where an initially dry material is suddenly introduced into an atmosphere having a partial pressure of water vapor or where a moist material is suddenly introduced into a dry atmosphere. Pebble milling has been practiced in the reduction works of South Africa gold mines for well over 50 years. Originally flint pebbles were imported from Denmark to grind stamp-mill amalgamation-process tailing, which contained a good deal of extractable gold, but local operators soon found that large pieces of ore could be used for the same purpose. The ore is a hard, tough conglomerate in which quartz pebbles are cemented together by a matrix of redeposited silica interspersed with pyrite crystals. The gold, rarely visible, occurs as fine particles mostly segregated at the interface of the pebble and matrix, although a small fraction occurs within the pyrite crystals. There is seldom any gold in the pebbles themselves. Following the usual South African practice in pebble milling, Union Corp. grinds the ore wet in two or three milling stages incorporating classification. The sized broken ore used as grinding media is separated from the main ore stream in the crushing section that prepares the ore for milling. Where the ore channel, or reef, is narrow there is a shortage of large pebbles. In this case primary grinding may be done in ball mills or, more recently, in rod mills, which cost less per ton to operate. The trend, however, is to prepare finer feed for the milling section. This makes it possible to use smaller primary pebbles and eliminates the need for steel. REDUCTION WORKS OF UNION CORP. LTD. Union Corp. Ltd. exercises financial and technical control over a group of seven gold mines in the Transvaal and Orange Free State. In the Transvaal, with one exception. the mines lie 20 to 40 miles east of Johannesburg, in flat or gently rolling countryside. Winkelhaak, the first of several new mines that will be developed by Union Corp., is located in similar terrain in an entirely new gold mining district about 80 miles east of Johannesburg. Table I gives details of milling units for six of the Union Corp. mines, together with the tonnage milled in 1957. Winkelhaak Mines Ltd. is not included, as it did not begin milling until 1958. This reduction plant has no crushing section; ore is ground directly from the mine (autogenously) in 12x16-ft mills. Because these operations are still in development, they are not described in this article. It will be noted that certain reduction works have mills of more than one size in the same milling stage. This came about when plant extensions in- corporated larger units. In the case of Geduld Propty. Mines Ltd., which began milling operations 50 years ago, the primary stage is stamp milling. The reduction works follow a uniform pattern and are usually joined to the main ore shaft. Ore from other shafts is brought by standard-gage railway and dumped into a common transfer bin. The trend is to increase surface storage capacity to enable the crushing and milling sections to operate at a steady rate, independent of fluctuating ore deliveries from mine. Milling and cyanide extraction divisions of new mines are always designed to allow for extensions as mine production increases. The conveying, washing, and screening system of the crushing section is usually laid out in final form, with additional space for more crushing equipment. The crushing sections operate on one shift during early years of mine production; a second shift is introduced when the mining rate warrants it. Ample surge capacity is provided. Crushing and milling is done only on weekdays, as the law does not allow these operations to take place on Sunday in any plants constructed since 1911. The cyanide extraction sections, however, operate continuously seven days a week, drawing on mill pulp gradually built up in the thickeners during the week. Construction and equipment of milling plants follow standard practice. Dilution water is drawn from a large, high-level tank to obtain constant pressure, but gland service water for the pulp pumps is reticulated from high-pressure, two-stage pumps. The mills are equipped with the most up-to-date machinery and are designed to save labor. They compare favorably with milling plants in countries where native labor does not exist, and automatic controls are being installed wherever feasible. Hydrocyclone classifiers have replaced mechanical classifiers in modern milling plants, chiefly because of the saving in capital outlay, maintenance, and building space. The hydroclones are fed from steady head boxes rather than directly from pumps, and dilution water is introduced into these boxes. Tests have shown that in steadiness of operation and separating efficiency cyclones are comparable to mechanical classifiers. but protective stationarv screens are needed to keep the spigots clear. Rubber-lined pumps are used for pulp of about 3 mesh or finer and metal-lined pumps for coarser material. None of the Union Corp. milling plants practices gravity concentration of coarse gold by amalgamation or the use of corduroy blankets. Studies have proved that no economic case can be made for these methods, which complicate the milling process and demand extra precautions against theft.

In the course of an investigation of lost circulation, a new tool has been developed which gives a qualitative measure of the relative velocity between the fluid column in the borehole and the tool. The position of a diaphragm in the side wall of the instrument depends on the flow through the device. This position is established by using the conductive borehole fluid in a potentiometric circuit. The instrument has high sensitivity and can detect changes in velocity as low as. 5 ft/min. Lost circulation mud additives do not interfere with the satisfactory performance of the tool. In a number of circulation losses of the pressure induced type, the instrument has shown that the losses were confined to extremely narrow zones (less than I ft), indicating that such ruptures occur in a more or less horizontal rather than vertical plane as has often been assumed. This pinpointing of the zone of loss is important in remedial procedures since it allows the treatment to be applied directly to the point of loss rather than to the entire open hole. The device can also be employed for indicating points of entry of water in producing wells. INTRODUCTION The need for an improved means of locating the positions of lost returns zones became evident during an investigation of lost circulation difficulties in the Gulf Coast area.1 With instrumentation available at the time, it had been learned that, contrary to common belief, the position of the thief zone responsible for a given loss seldom coincided with the point of bit penetration at the time the loss was encountered. In the majority of cases, the losses were found to be occurring at some distance removed from the bottom of the hole —sometimes as much as a few thousand feet. This information, along with other observations made during the investigation, led to improved techniques' for dealing with lost circulation problems. Highlighted, however, among the results of this work and of similar studies subsequently conducted in drilling operations in other parts of the country, was the indication that a considerable portion of the difficulty and expense involved in treating prolonged circulation losses is due to the unsystematic application of remedial measures to one or more apertures of unknown position. Basis of Tests It is worth considering that if the troublesome formation could somehow be transported to the surface where it could be directly observed, there would likely be little difficulty in readily effecting a seal. Although this is a decided oversimplification of the situation, it does appear that the chief obstacles to similar ease of handling of a lost circulation zone in a well are lack of visibility and of ready accessibility. The latter handicap is overcome to a considerable extent by placement techniques already in use, and other procedures now in the process of development are expected to offer further improvement. But in the matter of visual observation, the technique to be presently described appears to afford a quite satisfactory substitute.

This paper states that progress in blast-furnace engineering during the past five years is unimportant except for the advent of the electric precipitator for gas cleaning. It describes improvements in certain furnace details and in materials of construction. The paper is largely given over to a discussion of difficulties in operation due to disproportion between the diameter of the present-day furnace at the bosh and at the stock line. It is proposed to remedy this disproportion, and to restore relations in the diameter of stock line and bosh as they formerly existed, by a new method of filling. This method requires a double bell arranged to discharge towards the periphery or towards the center of the furnace. Coke is classified into two sizes, the small size going to the middle of the furnace, and the larger to the periphery along with the ore. By this means the resistance of the center of the furnace is increased, and the stock line diameter may be greatly increased. The writer believes that these modifications will result in a somewhat improved fuel economy and regularity of operation and also in a very greatly reduced production of flue dust.

Masjid-i-Sulaiman Field.—During the past year, drilling activities have been limited to repair work. No new developments of importance can be recorded in production technique. Fall of dome pressure is maintained at the 1 lb. per sq. in. per annum rate mentioned in previous reports. Acid treatment of wells is being increasingly used and for wells in fissured areas has been very successful. Such wells have been converted into first-grade producers with substantial drops in bottom-hole differential pressures. The effect of acid treatment has been to increase the flowing lives of wells so treated. The normal procedure consists of threo treatments of 500 gal. commercial acid diluted 100 per cent but success has been met with fewer applications. The policy of returning products to the resorvoir has been continued. The total quantity of products returned since the policy was commenced in 1929 now amounts to approximately 30 million barrels. Haft Kel Field.—The drilling of the main Haft Kel structure for production purposes has now been completed. Production and control wells have been completed to meet the rate of production anticipated over the next few years.

I HAVE lately had occasion to examine sulphuretted ores of bismuth both from Tudor, Ontario, and Latete, New Brunswick. The former consisted chiefly of bismuth-glance, carbonated at the outcrop, and within associated with some metallic bismuth, iron-pyrites and graphite, in a quartz gangue. In the second locality, where it appears to be present in considerable quantity, the veinstone is also quartz, but the associates of the bismuth-glance are chalcopyrite and galena. The treatment of such mixed ores in the furnace for the extraction of the bismuth could yield only a very impure product, and in view of the high price of the metal I tried with success a wet method for the treatment of the ore, which is based on well-known chemical reactions, and may, in some cases, be advantageously used. The pulverized ore is dissolved by heat in commercial nitric acid, and the remaining gangue washed by displacement, first with a little strong acid (which is used to attack a fresh portion of ore) and then with a moderate quantity of water, which is added to the first solution. Discussion of the paper of Frederic P. Dewey, presented at the Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912, and printed in Bulletin -No. 70, October, 1912, pp. 1075 to 1101. EDWARD KELLER, Perth Amboy, N. J. (communication to the Secretary *) :-Mr. Dewey, in his paper, offers a liberal addition of new data to those already to be found in the technical literature on this subject. However, now as before, the work issuing from the U. S. mints and assay-offices conveys the impression that systematic sampling in those institutions is more or less a secondary consideration, the chief attention being given to the principle of producing approximately homogeneous bars; recourse being taken to remelting or refining the bullion. This practice has been definitely rejected in the realm of copper-bullion sampling, for the reason that in such operations there are always unaccounted losses. Does not the same objection hold true for gold-bullions; although, perhaps,in a lesser degree ? Differences of opinion would seem justified on the following statements made by Mr. Dewey: 1. "Only two classes of alloys can form homogeneous bars-those that are solid solutions, and the eutectics."

(written discussion *).-This paper is particularly interesting to me, because it gives data on a much mooted question, viz., the serviceability of Le Chatelier (platinum-platinum-rhodium) thermocouples under severe industrial conditions. It has always been supposed that platinum-platinum-rhodium thermo-couples, used at high temperatures under strong reducing conditions, would not give long service and were subject to rapid volatilization. The fact, however, that the carefully kept records indicate that a little more than 3 gm. out of more than 830 gm. was lost over this considerable period, shows what kind of service can -be obtained from platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples,, when properly installed, and well cared for. While the writer has no actual figures on the loss of weight, etc. of platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples under service, he was told, by the man in charge of pyrometers at a large industrial plant in which over 400 platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples were installed in furnaces doing various kinds of heat-treating work, that the average maintenance cost, for materials alone, including platinum-platinum-rhodium wires and protecting tubes, was 27 c. per furnace, per month:

INTRODUCTION Much discussion has been generated over the years among geologists and engineers as to the ideal drill-hole configuration and spacing for evaluating various types of mineral deposits. Little can be found in the literature about the outcome of the programs, probably because of their subjective nature and the then lack of suitable means of scientific testing. In years past the drilling patterns and sequence were almost entirely determined by the experience and personal bias of the senior engineer, geologist, or project manager on the job. However, planning a drilling program- spacing, pattern, sequencing, etc.-is simply a specific case of sample design, or the design of a sampling program. Having been exposed in the preceding chapter to the theory of regionalized variables, and having learned something about the tools for measuring correlation, or lack of correlation, among samples within a given mineralogical population, we are now prepared to apply these concepts and new-found parameters to a scientifically designed mineral sampling program, be it by drilling or other means. THE equilibrium y phase in Cu-Be alloys forms by discontinuous precipitation, the new phase nucleating at the grain boundaries and growing into grains on both sides of the boundary. When the alloy is aged above 500°C, however, growth may take place into only one of the grains.1'2 In A1-Ag alloys it is known that the precipitate has the same orientation as the grain in which no growth takes place.3, 4 This was confirmed in the present investigation on a Cu-Be alloy. A Cu-1.79 wt pct Be alloy was solution-treated at 810°C for 2+ hr, quenched into water at O°C, and aged at 600°C for 1 hr in a salt bath. The specimen was thinned by chemical polishing and electropolishing at room temperature in a solution of H3PO4 saturated with CrOs. The foil produced was examined in a JEM 150 electron microscope operating at 150 kv. Fig. 1 shows precipitates growing on only one side of the grain boundary. The problem of efficient reclamation of zinc base die cast scrap became interesting early in 1930. Die Cast Metal, as referred to in this paper, is a zinc base alloy with various proportions of aluminum, copper, magnesium, antimony and tin. Many attempts were made to work out some means of reclaiming the discarded die cast metal for re-use as new die cast metal. Difficulties in such reclamation were attributable to contamination by lead and tin from solder, chromium and nickel from electroplated coatings, and iron from iron inserts. This paper relates the experiments that led to the development of a specialized muffle furnace for the treatment of zinc base die cast scrap for the production of zinc oxide and zinc, and describes the development of the muffle furnace and the equipment now used commercially for these purposes. The Eagle-Picher Co. acquired all patent rights' for these developments from the International Smelting and Refining Co. in connection with their purchase of the East Chicago Plant. Zinc Base Serap Situation About 1935, the die cast scrap situation became increasingly acute for scrap dealers. This scrap was accumulating from dismantling automobiles and household appliances which contained die cast parts. Efforts to find an outlet for this type of scrap were intensified. The International Smelting and Refining Co. began to study the possibilities of a commercial process for the recovery of values from die cast scrap. At that time most of the die cast metal reclaimed was melted down in small kettles of from one to five tons capacity, the iron inserts being removed by skimming. The dross was skimmed off and disposed of as a zinc dross. The drossed metal was cast into slabs and was given the trade name "die cast slabs.". Distribution of the products produced by melting die cast scrap in kettles is shown in Table 1. American Process Experiments A method considered for the production of zinc oxide from die cast scrap was an adaption of the standard American Process of zinc oxide manufacture. Thus some die cast scrap was mixed with oxidized zinc materials and charged to Wetherill grates. The zinc oxidized to zinc oxide but, while the aluminum and copper largely remained in the residue, the color of the zinc oxide produced was impaired by copper contamination. As the proportion of die cast scrap was increased, liquation took place; that is, the metal trickled through the charge then solidified in the openings of the grates. French Process Experiments Several hundred tons of die cast scrap were purchased for test purposes and converted into die cast slabs. These slabs were charged into a French Process (horizontal retort) zinc oxide furnace with some electrolytic zinc. A satisfactory grade of zinc oxide was not produced. Distillation in Belgian Retorts It was then decided that, rather than attempt to use scrap die cast metal or scrap zinc for the production of zinc oxide, it would be advisable to redistill the die cast slab metal in a Belgian retort furnace. The opportunity to do so was provided by the closing of the zinc smelter of the Illinois Zinc Co. at Peru, Ill. Arrangements were made for the operation of a Belgian retort furnace for such redistillation purposes. The results of this experiment are summarized in Table 2.

Previous articles in this column have defined the manpower situation as it. applies to the coal industry. There is at present a shortage of experienced managers, mining engineers, technicians and skilled workers. The extent of this shortage is controversial, but it is sufficiently important to have received the serious attention of coal industry people at all levels. It has also been discussed by union officials, educators, government agencies and trade publications as well as other communications media. Discussion is not enough, however. A plan of action is needed. Some suggestions for such a plan are presented here. First, the coal industry must interest itself in government training programs. The U.S. Government (primarily the Bureau of Mines and HEW) is planning to spend or is spending millions of dollars to educate and train technicians, inspectors, engineers and miners. The new Federal Health and Safety Academy at Beckley, W. Va., for example, will involve an expenditure of $20-30 million for the physical plant alone. There are encouraging signs that the present hierarchy in the Bureau of Mines intends to seek the advice of mining educators on some of these projects, but industry should also demand a voice in the policy to be followed in making these expenditures.
