Automatic recording of the radioactivity of the earth's formations provides a log of relative intensities that, if properly interpreted, can be applied to oil-field engineering. Production, engineering, and geological departments regard the radioactivity log as a forward step in the securing of more conclusive information for successful well completions. Explanations of the technique, together with some of the problems to which radioactivity logging have been applied, are presented in this paper. Introduction Those responsible for the completion of new oil and gas wells, or with planning workover operations on old wells, have followed closely the development of radioactivity well logging because they are interested in reducing the number of unknowns that usually are present in such work. Many operators have made use of the log, or are acquainted with at least one of the applications, but it is unlikely that any one operator is familiar with all of the many applications that are possible. The purpose of this paper is to present a representative example of each of the many applications, wherever the information has been released by an operator, and to illustrate by hypothetical examples other applications, releases for which have not been given. In this way, it is hoped that a better understanding of the scope of this new engineering tool may be obtained. Athough the literature contains many references that describe in detail the theory, development, and application of radioactivity well logging, a brief discussion of the technique may be helpful to those who are investigating the subject for the first time, All rocks contain radioactive material in varying concentrations. In general, shales contain relatively more radioactive material than sandstones or limestones. These radioactive materials disintegrate with time into other materials of lower atomic weight, and in that process of disintegration the rocks are emitting many rays, the most penetrating of which is the gamma ray. The intensity of emission of the gamma ray is proportional to the quantities of radioactive materials present. A higher rate of emission would be observed, therefore, opposite a shale than opposite a sandstone or limestone. Since measurable intensities of gamma rays are capable of penetrating as many as five concentric strings of casing, and as the gamma-ray intensity is relative to the formations, the measurements of variations in gamma-ray intensities offer a means of identifying cased-off formations in their proper stratigraphic sequence. Hydrogen diffusion in hcp and bcc titanium in the temperature range 610° to 900°C was measured by reacting cylindrical specimens of high-purity titanium at constant temperature with small constant pressures of hydrogen of the order of a few Torr. In the range 0 to 6.7 at. pct H in hcp titanium, the diffusion coefficient D in sq cm per sec is given by: where T is in °K and R in cal per g-atom OK. Only three measurements of diffusivity in bcc titanium were made: at 900' : the diffusivity in ß titanium was found to be 1.8 x 10-4 sq crn per sec. McQUILLAN1 has studied the constitution of the Ti-H system and reported the concentration of hydrogen as a function of pressure of hydrogen and temperature. He found hydrogen absorption was reversible and rapid at temperatures above 500°C in both crystallographic modifications, the a (hcp) phase and the ß (bcc) phase, with the latter phase stabilized by hydrogen additions. Wasilewski and Kehl 2 measured the diffusivity of hydrogen in hcp and bcc Ti-H alloys. For bcc alloys, they reacted cylindrical specimens of titanium with hydrogen gas at 1 atm pressure. They measured the rate of absorption of hydrogen isothermally on specimens ranging from zero hydrogen content when above the transformation temperature to hydrogen contents sufficient to stabilize the bcc phase when below the transformation temperature. By integrating Fick's second law for a cylindrical geometry, assuming a diffusion coefficient independent of composition, they calculated diffusivities as a function of temperature. In the range 650" to 1000°C their results in bcc titanium yielded the expression: where D is in sq cm per sec, T in OK, and R the gas constant in cal per g-atom-OK. Their studies on the hcp a phase were conducted by exposing long cylindrical titanium specimens to hydrogen at a sufficiently high pressure to establish a surface layer of fl phase 80 to 120 u thick for the duration of an isothermal experiment. Concentration profiles were then determined by hydrogen analysis from chips obtained upon machining quenched specimens. The diffusivity of hydrogen was then calculated yielding the expression: The present investigation was undertaken principally to redetermine the diffusivity data on a titanium by a direct absorption from the gas phase at sufficiently low hydrogen pressures to avoid the presence of a surface bcc phase and also to check the diffusivity data at low hydrogen concentrations in the bcc stmcture. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE High-purity electrolytic sponge titanium (99.9 pct) of BHN 91 was arc-melted, forged, rolled, and machined into cylinders of final hardness, upon annealing, of BHN 92. Cylindrical specimens of two sets of dimensions were used: 1.524 by 2.931 cm and 1.905 by 3.663 cm diam and length, respectively. The experimental apparatus used for annealing specimens and for admitting known amounts of hydrogen at constant pressure is shown in Fig. 1. In a typical experiment, a specimen was lightly abraded with fine-grain silicon carbide, washed with water and detergent, and then thoroughly degreased with reagent-grade tri-chlorethylene and acetone. The specimen was suspended by a Chrome1 wire in the center of a quartz furnace tube, without contact with the tube, and heated to 925°C (as measured by a thermocouple adjacent to the specimen, outside the tube) for a period of at least 4 hr under a vacuum of from 10-6 to -7 Torr as measured by an ionization gage. The relationship between microstructure and mechanical properties of cast 356-type aluminum alloys was studied to determine the cause of the variations in properties resulting from differences in solidification rate. It was found that variations in strength are a consequence of variations in ductility and that ductility is inversely proportional to the dendrite cell size. A mechanism is proposed to account for this correlation based on the fracture strain of the inter-dendritic silicon particles and the differential strain across dendrite cell boundaries. IT has long been assumed that permanent mold castings of aluminum are superior to sand castings because of their finer grain structure and reduced porosity.' A systematic variation of static properties was noted during unpublished studies of fatigue-strength variations with solidification rate of A356-T6. Of particular interest was the observation that for a given composition and heat-treatment, both ductility and the ultimate strength increased with higher solidification rate. Because the A1-Si system forms the basis of many alloys used for castings and welding wire, a study was initiated to determine the details of how higher cooling rates improved mechanical properties of these alloys. The results of this study are presented here. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Specimens were prepared from 356-T6 to supplement the A365-T6 alloy data from earlier studies. This allowed a comparison of behavior of alloys with substantially different strengths but with only small differences in alloy composition. The composition and heat treatment of both alloys are given in Table I. The specimens were cut from a chill plate casting,' which is a 6 by 9-in. plate, 1 in. thick, which has one end heavily chilled, and a large riser at the other so that solidification is essentially unidirectional from the chill end to the riser. Although not measured here, solidification times measured on similar specimens by embedded thermocouples are a few seconds at the chill end and up to 5 min near the riser. Specimens were obtained by cutting slabs from the plate, parallel to the chill; these represented different cooling rates, with essentially the same composition. For the tests, either 0.125 or 0.250-in. thick slabs were cut for standard 2-in. gage length specimens. The thicker specimens were tested to failure at 2000 lb per min while the thinner specimens were tested in an Instron machine at a constant cross-head speed of 0.02 in. per min. These thin specimens were intended for trans- mission electron microscopy. Some thin specimens were tested to failure while the remainder were given various amounts of prestrain. Dendrite cell sizes were measured by the linear intercept method on photomicrographs at either X100 or X50, depending on the cell size. It was assumed that the dendrite cells were outlined by the silicon particles. Determinations were made on two mutually perpendicular planes and an rms average taken. Electron fractographs of representative tensile specimens were made in the conventional manner using the two-stage replica technique.3 Samples for transmission electron microscopy were prepared by chemical milling followed by electropolishing. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The results of the tensile tests and the dendrite cell-size determinations are given in Figs. 1 and 2. All data show the same trends, namely, a decrease in ultimate strength and elongation with increasing distance from the chill (and solidification time), and a corresponding increase in dendrite cell size. The yield strength remains essentially constant. The constancy of the yield strength was particularly significant since it indicated that variation in the solidification rate does not affect the stress required to initiate plastic flow. THE possibility of using reflected X-rays to produce images of crystals was explored by Barrettl who developed simple experimental procedures for X-ray microscopy and who showed by numerous examples the great range of information that could be made available. In his method characteris radiation is used to produce an image of a limited area of the sample on fine-grained film, this image subsequently being enlarged approximately X100. THE 6 phase of the Cu-Sn system (Cu,Sn, = 32.53 pct Sn) was considered to be stable down to room temperature until Owen and Iball showed by X-ray analysis that it undergoes a eutectoid decomposition into the a and e phases at a temperature near 300°C. Their findings have been confirmed by other investigators,2-5 a11 of whom used X-ray diffraction studies of powdered specimens. The transformation temperature has been reported by various authors as lying between 300" and 380°C. To our knowledge, no microscopic evidence of the eutectoid reaction has been published, as yet. It was in connection with other work that longtime annealings at 300°C were conducted with alloys containing 22, 32.6, and 35 pct Sn (nominal compositions) prepared from electrolytic copper and electrolytic tin and cast in a small iron mold. The specimens were first annealed at 700°C for 5½ hr and quenched from 400 °C after cooling to, and annealing at, that temperature for 9½ hr. After this treatment the sample with 22 pct Sn was cold worked for 15 pct reduction in thickness; the 32.6 and 35 pct alloys were too brittle to be cold worked. The final anneal at 300°C was done in a sealed pyrex glass bulb for 63 days. Fig. 1 represents the microstructure of the annealed alloy with 22 pct Sn. It shows primary a solid-solution crystals in a matrix of the (a + 8)-eutectoid formed at 520 °C. The a crystals contain 8 inclusions which precipitated from a due to the decrease in the solubility of tin in copper with fall in temperature. The decomposition of the 8 phase into a (light) and E (dark) can clearly be seen in some areas of the (a + 8)-eutectoid matrix. However, the decomposition is far from being completed, even after the long-time anneal used. Figs. 2 and 3 depict the microstructures of the annealed 32.6 pct alloy, which was intended to consist entirely of 6 phase. Due to some loss in copper on melting, the composition is slightly higher in tin. Accordingly, the sample after quenching from 400 "C consisted of grains of the 8 phase with the e phase arranged along the grain boundaries and as a Wid-manstatten precipitate within the 6 grains. After an annealing time of 63 days, the eutectoid decomposition, 6 + a + e, is still in its early, initial state. The pearlitic type of eutectoid is nucleated at the c crystals, preferably those surrounding the grain boundaries of the 8 phase. The appearance of the (a + €)-eutectoid in the 35 pct Sn alloy was very similar to that shown in Figs. 2 and 3. Again, the eutectoid decomposition nucleated at the 6 phase and proceeded from there into the 8 areas. As is evident from Fig. 2, the rate of decomposition of the 6 phase at 300°C is extremely sluggish: In the representative area shown only about 5 pct of the 8 phase has undergone the eutectoid trans- formation after annealing for 63 days. On the other hand, Owen and Williams2 have reported that X-ray photographs of powdered samples with between 17.5 and 34 pct Sn did not show 8 lines after annealing for only five to seven days at 300°C. This is in accordance with the fact that the rate of reaction in powdered samples is higher than in massive specimens, as a result of the excess free energy of the powder (due to its greater surface area). IF you do not make the disc at the same time as the core and as part of it, it is necessary to make it by itself. This is done by spreading on a board or other flat surface a layer of clay as thick and wide as [88] the disc that you made at the feeding head of the first pattern of the gun. When it is dry, mark it exactly with compasses and then, cutting with a chisel or rasp, make it fit exactly into the empty space at the head. Likewise, make a hole just as wide as the thickness of the core exactly in the middle of this clay disc. When you have put the disc in its place in the mould and then pass the core through this hole, it passes exactly through the center of the mould in such a way that it meets the iron ring that you put at the foot of the mould for this purpose. INTRODUCTION THE bibliography of mining methods in the past few years has contained many articles dealing with the use of the diamond drill for blasthole drilling. In the Canadian mines, this method has been used with great success in stoping at Noranda, Aldermac, Waite Amulet, East Malartic and Sladen Malartic mines in the Province of Quebec. It has also been used at the Dorchester and Beattie gold mines in Duparquet, Quebec. The method has found useful application at Copper Mountain mine, British Colombia, and at Flin Flon mine in Manitoba. In the United States, the diamond drill blasthole method has been used at Cornwall Iron Ore Mines in Pennsylvania and at the Republic Steel Corporation magnetite properties in the Port Henry district of northern New York. In the Lake Superior iron district, the method has been used at the Anvil-Palms mine of Pickands, Mather and Co. at Bessemer, Mich., and is also used at the Book mine of the North Range Mining Co. at Alpha, Mich. Other companies in the district have also experimented in some degree with the method at some of their properties. This paper is being offered as a preliminary report on the use of the diamond drill method of stoping at the Book mine. Sufficient work has been done with it to prove its worth and it is the purpose of the article to present some results, operational details, equipment ideas and recommendations which we have found in its use at our mine. LOCATION AND DESCRIPTION The Book mine is situated about a mile north of the village of Alpha, in the NE-NE ¼ and the SE-NE ¼ of sec 12-42-33, between the Dunn mine and the Balkan-Judson mine, and about four miles southwest of the village of Crystal Falls, on the Menominee Range of Michigan. The property was found to have ore near surface in sufficient quantities for open-pit operations and stripping was begun in the latter part of 1942 to prepare it for ore production in 1943. During 1943, 288,447 tons of direct shipping ore were produced from the open pit and 382,933 tons in 1944. While the mine was being operated as an open pit some 350,000 tons of lean ore were stockpiled for later treatment. This material is being treated in a washing and jig plant and concentrates are produced during the shipping season. The ore bodies at the Book mine are characteristic of the Menominee Range. They are found on the flanks of sharply folded anticlines which have a fairly steep pitch to the northwest. The open-pit operations in 1943 and 1944 revealed two of these anticlinal structures. Since 1976, Cia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD) has carried out tests to develop a type of pellet made with an organic binder. Peridur is one binder that showed it could be used in industrial plants. Extensive tests were run in CVRD's pilot plant. The results are presented in this paper. The decision was made to carry out an industrial production of 50 ht (55,000 st) of pellets. The results are shown in this paper. No detrimental effects of the Peridur were observed in either the process or in product quality.

The valuable mineral content of the current feed to the Miami concentrator is as follows: copper, 0.7 pct total; molybdenum, 0.01. Flotation of this ore yields a sulphide concentrate containing: chalcocite, 44 pct; molybdenite, 0.5; pyrite, 50.0; insol, 5.5. A combination of potassium ethyl xanthate and pentasol amyl xanthate as collectors, and pine oil as frother, are used in this flotation. Rejection of pyrite is encouraged by holding the amount of collectors used to the minimum consistent with copper recovery and by operating at high alkalinity (equivalent to 0.35-0.40 lb CaO per ton solution of pH 11.0).

The heat-calculations of gas-analyses involve cumbrous multiplications, which are apt to lead into errors. The foliowing tables and formulae have been found useful as facilitating such calculations, and therefore I hope that they will be of interest to some of the members. A model of the fully-loaded condition of particle accumulation on the matrix of a high gradient magnetic separator is developed. The model accurately predicts the build-up profiles reported recently by Friedlaender et al. A powerful development from the model is that loading (volume of accumulated material per unit volume of matrix) is uniquely defined by a dimensionless group, called the loading number, NL. From direct measurements, NL proved superior to the dimensionless group proposed by Watson as a measure of loading. The fine size limit of hematite recovery is examined using NL.

EDUCATION is a business; and, if the consumer is satisfied with the product, no one has any grounds for complaint. "Pretty well satisfied" about slims up the attitude of the mining industry toward the young graduates presently entering the field. Yet, with amazing regularity the controversy over the five-year curriculum recurs in educational circles. The educational mills grind out their products, some higher grade than others, depending on individual proclivity. The cycle continues almost without interruption. Arthur Taggart, however, takes his bowie knife to some of the sturdiest limbs of the tree of knowledge in his article on engineering education on page 770 of this issue. As all who know him might suspect, the pruning is not restrained. With one swing of the knife, such practically-labeled courses as Mine Design are stricken from the tree and transplanted to the field of Graduate Education. Emphasis on the basic sciences and the study of man through courses in history, economics, and literature are recommended to constitute an undergraduate curriculum. Such courses show the least depreciation and therefore give the student the most for his money. Partial justification for this dramatic departure from tradition is explained by the increasing number of companies giving training courses. Why make the student pay for what he can get paid for learning after graduation, the author argues. Other leading educators espouse this doctrine. Dean S. C. Hollister of Cornell, for the Committee on Adequacy and Standards of Engineering Education, recommended to ECPD in 1951 that emphasis be placed on the basic sciences. "Sifting back through the curriculum, it seems clear that instruction in the basic sciences, if taught in a manner such that knowledge of them makes available working tools, contributes the most sustaining part of the curriculum", reported the committee. Note that he would utilize practical problems from the fields of engineering in teaching the sciences. In our opinion the important thing to learn in college is how to think the engineering approach. Recitation on traditional solutions of classic problems sharpens the memory, not the ingenuity of the student. The engineering schools of the nation recognize the advantage of great emphasis on fundamentals, and the inclusion of cultural courses in the curriculum. However, industry presently requires graduates to have a substantial knowledge of the tools of the trade upon graduation. This means that the colleges are forced to pare to the bone to encompass the required studies in the time allotted. In addition, there is the limitation of student money. College educators also claim that entering freshmen are often improperly prepared in such subjects as writing and mathematics. These considerations make it difficult for the critic of the engineering graduate to make any headway with the educators. Actually with the mounting problems imposed by lower grade and more complex ores, a new breed of engineers is needed. The impetus for this new product must come from industry. If there was a concerted effort from industry for an improved type of engineer, the colleges would modify their aims to meet the demand for the kind of individual desired.

In the drilling of oil wells the control and prevention of lost circulation of the drilling- fluid is a oroblem which is frequently encountered; in many cases existing materials and methods for alleviating this condition have not been adequate. For severe cases of lost circulation in which the simpler methods, such as application of various bridging materials to the mud system, have proven unsatisfactory. a new material and method for applying to the loss zones have been developed which appear to he superior to existing techniques in many respects. The material, called a clay cement, is capable of being handled as a drilling fluid after initial mixing of the solitl ingredients with water and may be pumped down the drill pipe and squeezed into loss zones. After a short period, the material develops a very high gel strength which seals off the zone against further losses of the drilling fluid. In field tests, the process has been demonstrated to be a very effective method for combatting lost circulation. INTRODUCTION Methods of treating lost circulation in rotary-drilled wells by the addition of special materials to drilling fluids have long been in the process of development and are continuing to improve.' However, the annual drilling costs which can be traced directly to lost circulation difficulties still run into the millions of dollars. The loss of mud materials into highly permeable zones may range up to $50,000 per well in some areas. In addition to mud costs, excessive requirements of casing, cement; rig time, and the attendant blowout hazards further emphasize the importance of the need for improved methods of combatting lost circulation. The shortcomings of presently-used materials and methods have led to the development of a new lost returns material in the form of a time-setting clay cement. In field tests this material has proven very successful in plugging off loss zones. which other more conventional materials had failed to do. REVIEW OF PRESENT CORRECTIVE MEASURES The proper control of such operating factors as pump pressure, clearance between pipe and hole, and speed of running pipe in a holez is of primary importance in preventing and minimizing lost circulation problems. These factors, however, concern matters of drilling technique and do not directly involve lost circulation materials. Aside from setting casing past loss zones, three principal methods are generally employed for the purpose of avoiding or combatting lost circulation: (1) adjustment in properties (principally density) of the drilling fluid, (2) addition of fibrous, flaky, granular or other types of bridging materials to the mud system, and (3) the application of cements to the loss zones. The latter method is usually employed only after the first two have proven unsuccessful. In Table I are listed some advantages and disadvantages of the common corrective measures. Samuel T. Wellman, Cleveland pioneer steel man, who was often referred to as the "father of the open-hearth process of the United States," died suddenly on July 11, 1919, of heart disease, at Stratton, Me. For more than half a century, he was closely identified with the improvement of equipment used in the making of steel and contributed a number of inventions that virtually revolutionized the industry. Mr. Wellman was born Feb. 5, 1847, at Wareham, Mass., his father at the time being superintendent of the Nashua Iron Co., Nashua, N. H. After attending public school and a year at Norwich University, he served in the Civil War as a corporal of the first New Hampshire Heavy Artillery. He went to Pittsburgh in 1867 and assisted in starting the first crucible steel melting furnace built in America at the works of Anderson, Cook & Co. It melted a ton of steel with an average of 1000 Ib. of nut coal, which cost less than $1, while the melting of a ton of steel in crucibles in the old fashioned coke furnace took three tons of the very best coke, costing from $2 to $3 per ton. This furnace was a great success and in a very few years had driven the coke furnace out of use. From Anderson, Cook & Co., Mr. Wellman went to the Singer, Nimick & Co. works, Pittsburgh, where he built two crucible steel melting furnaces of the same type. After that he spent some time in the office of the Siemens agents in Boston and also at steel works in different parts of the country, starting crucible steel furnaces. He then went to the Bay State Iron Works in South Boston, Mass., where he built the first open-hearth furnace that was a commercial success in the United States. It made steel of a much better quality than had previously been made in this country. The principal use to which it was put in those days was the manufacture of locomotive fire-boxes. From South Boston, he went hack to the old works in New Hampshire where his father was still superintendent, and built for it an open-hearth furnace, a plate mill, and a bar mill. In 1873, Mr. Wellman went to Cleveland to design and build the plant of the Otis Steel Co. He remained with this company for 16 years as engineer and superintendent. During this time he developed the open-hearth charging machine and introduced the electromagnet for handling pig iron and scrap steel. The first charging machine was operated by hydraulic power, and although it was not entirely satisfactory it performed the work fairly well and encouraged its inventor to build another one, which was driven by electric motors.
