Since 1978, the titanium metals industry, throughout the non-socialist world, has experienced a period of growth and prosperity unparalleled since the late 1950s. Sponge producers, melters and mill product manufacturers have operated at capacity, record shipments have been attained, new producers have entered the industry and established producers have implemented expansion plans. However, there is now mounting evidence that the underlying elements which generated this vigorous surge have abated, at least temporarily. It now appears that in 1982, the industry will encounter overcapacity, excessive inventory accumulations and the probability of declining prices. Therefore, it does seem appropriate that we now take inventory of the present and future markets for titanium with the hope we can identify both near term opportunities as well as challenges the industry now faces. If we view the development of titanium markets as a function of time, they fit rather neatly into three sectors.

A convolution procedure is described for obtaining an analytical expression for the composition profiles of solute concentration:; in binary solid solutions. The free energy of solutions containing such compositional inhomogeneities can then be evaluated and the stability of spherically symmetric clusters (G.P. zones, for short) us a function of their radii and central compositions can be studied accordingly. Two characteristic zone radii are defined: the minimum radius (RM) corresponding to the smallest zone for which growth is energetically favored over dissolution, and the critical radius RK) corresponding to zones associated with the minimum work of formation. The values of RM and RK coincide at the two classical limits of nucleation and growth and spinodal decomposition. As the spinodal is approached, however, RM and RK diverge increasingly and it is proposed that the initial] decomposition morphology is governed more closely by the minimum, rather than by the critical radius since the former possesses no singularity within the m eta stable phase boundary. Reversion is briefly discussed in the light of the foregoing and it is shown that a set of reversion temperatures located between the coherent miscibility gap and the coherent spinodal must correspond to a given distribution of low temperature zones. SINCE the early works of Guinier1 and preston,2 the kinetics and morphology of GP zones have been studied extensively, see Ref. 3, for example, for a recent review. Nevertheless, a completely satisfying theoretical treatment of the decomposition of meta-stable or unstable binary solid solutions is still lacking due to the almost unsurmountable mathematical difficulties that one encounters in attempting to solve the pertinent diffusion equation which, in principle, describes the whole process. This equation, first derived by Cahn for the initial stages of spinodal decomposition,4 is a nonlinear partial differential equation of the fourth order in anisotropic space, a general analytical solution of which is completely out of the question. From this equation, some prediction can be made, however, concerning the later stages of spinodal decomposition5 and a recent numerical solution6 of the equation in the case of one- and two-dimensional composition modulations of a solid solution inside the spinodal has led to the following considerations: the sinusoidal morphology7 is to be expected only for solutions of average composition c, located near the center of the coherent miscibility gap.8 For solutions with co closer to the spinodal decomposition, depleted shell zones9 should constitute the first recognizable decomposition product, later evolving to iso- lated, enriched preprecipitates in a uniformly depleted matrix as this must, in all cases, constitute the final metastable morphology, barring, of course, loss of coherency and change in crystal structure. In agreement with the qualitative description of Bonfiglioli and Guinier,l0 it thus appears that the various models discussed by previous authors are, in fact, idealized successive stages of the general decomposition process. Unfortunately, corresponding calculations for a solid solution outside the spinodal are not yet available because of two additional difficulties: it is essential that the diffusion equation be solved in three-dimensional space, and furthermore, one must include in the equation an appropriate "source term" describing the statistics of the creation of composition fluctuations required to trigger the nucleation events. At present, a general treatment of this problem does not appear to be tractable. Nevertheless, by using a modelistic approach, i.e., by selecting a priori certain composition variation profiles and by evaluating their associated free energies, one can draw certain conclusions relative to the stability of these isolated composition modulations or "zones", both outside and inside the spinodal. This is the object of the present investigation. THEORY We shall now describe a standard four-parameter spherically symmetric GP zone, evaluate its free energy according to the Cahn and Hilliard11 formula (Eq. [5], below), and plot the corresponding energy surfaces as a function of zone amplitude and radius as

A method has been devetoped for predicting the produced concentration profile for a miscible slug in a five-spot pattern. The technique consists of dividing the five-spot into radial etements and applying an approximate radial solution of the dispersion equation to each element. To test the method, laboratory experiments were conducted in five-spot models. The models were 2-ft X 2-ft X 2-in. Berea sandstone slabs simulating one quarter of a five-spot. An aqueous system was used with tritiated water as the tracer fluid. Effiuent concentration profiles were obtained for slug sizes ranging from 0.7 to 10.2 per cent of the pore volume. Agreement between predicted and experimental profiles was excellent. A prediction was also made for a field tracer test. For this case the predictive technique was modified to account for stratification by use of a layer cake model. INTRODUCTION Dispersion in porous media is of growing interest to the petroleum industry because of the increasing importance of secondary recovery operations. One of the controlling factors in the recovery of oil by miscible displacement or by the use of waterflood additives is the degree of mixing between the fluids of interest. Consequently, one of the prerequisites of any recovery prediction is an adequate method of predicting dispersion. Also, any quantitative interpretation of waterflood tracer tests is dependent upon the ability to determine the dispersion of the tracer as it flows through the reservoir. During the past few years there have been reported in the literature the results of a large number of investigations, both theoretical and experimental, concerning dispersion in porous media. (An excellent review of these results has been presented by Perkins and Johnston." Only a few of these investigations, however, deal with non-lin-ear flow systems. Raimondi et al.9 have presented an approximate solution of the dispersion equation for radial, diverging flow. Lau et al. 7 and Bentsen 1 have presented laboratory data for radial systems and have shown that the dispersion can be adequately predicted by Raimondi's solution. Bentsen has also presented a small amount of data for a radial, converging system. Brigham and Smith' have applied Raimondi's solution, with approximating assumptions, to a five-spot pattern to predict the behavior of a field tracer test. The afore-mentioned investigations have been concerned almost entirely with radial diverging flow and have neglected the effect of converging flow. For this reason the present investigation was undertaken to develop a method of predicting dispersion in a five-spot pattern including the effects of both diverging and converging flow. The method which was developed consisted of dividing the five-spot into diverging-converging radial elements and applying an approximate solution of the disperson equation to each element. DEVELOPMENT OF PREDICTION METHOD The development of the prediction method consisted of two phases: construction of a radial model of a five-spot pattern and derivation of equations to describe the dispersion in the radial model. FIVE-SPOT MODEL A radial model which simulated the flow characteristics of a five-spot pattern was constructed by dividing the five-spot into diverging-converging radial elements (Fig. 1). Because of symmetry the model represented only an octant of a complete five-spot. Each element had an included angle of l° (making a total of 45 elements) and a radius r, such that the sum of the individual element areas was equal to the area of the five-spot octant. The normal five-spot fractional flow behavior was determined by averaging the experimental five-spot data of Caudle and Witte,' Dyes, Caudle and Erickson 5 and Fay and Prats. 4 The resulting curve is shown as a solid line in Fig. 2. Equilibrium data which should be useful in the design and/or evaluation of glycol dehydration units were prepared from an analysis of various published data and the correlation of these data by the use of the thermo-dynamic equilibrium ratio. The equilibrium ratios of water are used to solve the glycol absorber problem; such solutions are necessary to define the number of trays and the glycol circulation rate needed to meet drying requirements. Activity coefficients were obtained which relate directly to the equilibrium ratios of water in the water-TEG-natural gas system. These activity coefficients have been used to calculate the equilibrium dew points for aqueous TEG concentrations of 60 to 99.9 weight per cent for the temperature range of 40° to 120° F. They also provide a means of calculating equilibrium ratios for water in the water-TEG-natural gas system; this applies to any desired TEG concentration and to the temperature range from 40° to 120°F. INTRODUCTION During the last several years, the drying of natural gas with aqueous triethylene-glycol (TEG) solutions has become very prominent. Most users of TEG as a drying agent have been satisfied with the performance of TEG solutions at the conditions used; however, there always has been some discussion of the drying ability of TEG solutions at conditions not commonly encountered such as temperatures below 50° or 60°F, but more particularly temperatures above 100°F, and pressures above 1,000 psia. Today, when higher wellhead temperatures such as 120°F are more commonly encountered many are skeptical of TEG's ability to dry sufficiently well to provide dew points around 32°F, which is generally the maximum tolerable when attempting to dry a gas to contract specifications of 7 Ib/MMscf. These views probably have evolved to some extent from the days when suppliers would not guarantee dew-point depressions in excess of 65° to 75 °OF. Also, the feelings about TEG drying may have arisen from the lack of information about the equilibrium relation of water in the drying operations. Porter and Reid' have reported equilibrium data for a 95 per cent TEG solution, while Townsend2 reported equilibrium data for 95, 98 and 100 per cent TEG solutions. Townsend also presented a calculational method which obtains activity coefficients in the liquid phase and, subsequently, the equilibrium water content of a saturated gas over glycol from published3 atmospheric dew points. Wise, Puck and Failey' presented activity data for the water-TEG system at atmospheric pressure. In the past, the equilibrium ratios published for water in a 95 per cent by weight aqueous TEG solution have been used indiscriminately by many for all concentrations of TEG encountered in gas drying operations. Since essentially all such gas operations require the use of more concentrated TEG solutions, a study was undertaken to correlate the existing equilibrium data for aqueous TEG and gas systems and to provide some means of calculating the equilibrium ratio of water in the natural gas-water-TEG system where TEG concentrations were other than 95 per cent. The data presented herein consider only the equilibrium drying ability of the TEG solutions and do not consider the effect of temperature and pressure on the tray eficiency of contactors. In other words, this paper is concerned primarily with the development of the equilibrium relationship between water in the dried natural gas and the water in the lean TEG entering the top tray of the absorber. BASIC EQUILIBRIUM RELATIONS A relationship which relates the K value of water in the natural gas-water-TEG system to the vapor pressure of water at the system temperature, the total pressure of the system and the activities of the liquid and gas phases has been evaluated. Measurements of the 103 yield stress of ordered and disordered poly crystalline Cu ,Au were related to the ordered antiphase domain size determined by resistivity measurements. For undeformed material, a yield stress maximum wa obtained at a critical domain diameter of about 40A. Plastic deformation resulted in a marked increase in the yield stress and electrical resistivity of the ordered alloy compared to the disordered, the strain hardening rate increasing regularly with initial antiphase domain size. Order hardening was accompanied by a sharp reduction in size of the initially large domains. It has been observed that the yield stress of ordered and partially ordered Cu3Au alloy varies sensitively with antiphase domain size aid degree of order.ly2 In addition, ordering of the lattice leads to a marked increase in the strain hardening rate (order hardening) as compared to the rate for the disordered alloy. In the present investigation, changes in the electrical resistivity and yield stress of ordered polycrystalline Cudu with varying initial domain diameters were measured after tensile plastic deformation in order to examine the effect of cold work on the antiphase domain size. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Au-Cu alloy of 99.99 pct purity analyzing 50.85 wt pct Au-balance copper was obtained from the Handy-Harmon Co., N. Y., in the form of 0.061 in. diam drawn wire. Wire specimens 3 in. in length were given the following annealing treatment in nitrogen: 500" for 72 hr, 820" for 15 hr, and 450" for 5 hr, followed by a water quench. The annealing sequence resulted in a completely disordered structure with a grain size of about 0.2 mm. The disordered specimens were then reannealed at 360' in nitrogen for periods varying from 10 min to 150 hr followed by quenching to produce ordered structures with varying domain sizes. The degree of ordering and variation of domain size was followed by electrical resistivity measurements made at room temperature using a low resistance precision Kelvin double bridge apparatus. The specimen resistance was determined over a length of 4.0 cm between two brass knife-edge contacts while the specimen was immersed in an oil bath to minimize temperature variations. In addition, the current flow in the circuit was minimized by a current pulse technique in balancing the bridge in order to avoid heating the specimen. Using a sensitive galvanometer to detect the bridge null, the accuracy of the resistance measurement Wire specimens were plastically strained in tension with an Instron tensile unit at strain rates in the range 5 x 10"5 sec-' to 2 x 10"4 sec-'. Stress and extension data were fed into the Instron chart drive amplifier to obtain the actual stress-elongation curve from which the yield stress at 10"3 strain was determined. The maximum resolution of the apparatus was approximately 50 psi stress and 3 x 104 strain. At various plastic strain levels, deformation was interrupted and the electrical resistivity determined after removing the stress. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION 1) Yield Strength of Ordered Cudu. In order to determine the effect of the ordered antiphase domains on the initial yield stress, specimens were prepared with varying domain sizes ranging from zero for 5 completely disordered structure to about lo5A for a completely ordered structure by suitable annealing treatment. Domain sizes were estimated by comparing room temperature electrical resistivity data with the original data of Jones and sykes3 as modified by rdle.' In agreement with previous work, the resistivity varied sensitively with domain diameter and degree of order, decreasing from approximately 11.6 x l0- ohm-cm for the disordered structure to about 5.9 x l0- ohm-cm for ordered domains above 10"3 cm in diameter. RELAXATION in metals has been studied in detail by many workers in recent years.1-5 These studies have shown that there is an energy-loss peak observed in a metal placed in mechanical resonance at low frequencies which may be correlated with various metallurgical processes. These experiments have been largely used to study single-phase materials. In order to study the effect of a finely dispersed second phase in a metal matrix upon this phenomenon, the relaxation behavior of an aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-Type alloy in both the fine-grained as-extruded and coarse-grained recrystallized conditions was investigated by the use of internal-friction measurements. The alloys studied, designated MD 2100, consist of a matrix of commercial-purity aluminum containing a finely dispersed second phase of aluminum oxide. The aluminum oxide is present in this alloy in the form of fine platelets approximately 130A units thick and several microns on edge. The mean free path betwen dispersed platelets is approximately 0.5 p. The grain size of this alloy is extremely stable at temperatures as high as the melting temperature of the aluminum matrix. In the as-extruded condition the grain diameter is several microns, while in the recrystallized condition it is several millimeters in diameter. The damping characteristics of the alloy samples were determined using a torsional-pendulum device. The internal-friction constant was determined for this alloy in both the fine-grained as-extruded and coarse-grained recrystallized conditions over the temperature range from 343" to 923°K at frequencies of 0.9, 1.3, and 1.8 cycles per sec. An internal-friction peak was observed in testing the fine-grained alloys which was not observed for the coarse-grained alloys. This peak, which might be associated with a type of grain-boundary relaxation, was observed at each of the three different test frequencies for the fine-grained sample. The temperature at which the relaxation peak occurred for each of the three different frequencies is shown in Table I. From these data an activation energy of relaxation for each pair of frequencies was determined by comparing the temperature shift of the relaxation peak with frequency between each of the test frequencies, assuming that an Arrhenius-type rate equation is applicable. The activation energy of relaxation determined from these data is also shown in Table I. The mean value of the activation energy was about 6 kcal per mole. The activation energy for the relaxation process determined in this investigation indicates that the relaxation associated with the grain boundaries in this aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-Type alloy is quite a different process than grain boundary relaxation in single-phase aluminum alloys. In these latter alloys, the activation energy for relaxation has been found to be the activation energy for self-diffusion, approximately 36 kcal per mole1,2 Where the activation energy is the same as the activation energy for self diffusion, it has been proposed that the relaxation phenomena is dependent upon vacancy formation and motion. It is apparent therefore, that, in this aluminum-aluminum oxide SAP-Type alloy, the relaxation must be due to another type of atom transport. It has been shown previously in studies of the high-temperature, low-stress, steady-state creep behavior of as-extruded aluminum SAP-Type alloys, that the activation energy for steady-state creep is one that may be characterized by the nucleation of dislocations from the grain boundaries. It is proposed that the relaxation behavior observed here is due to a similar effect. In this case, the internal-friction peak is a resonance behavior due to the time-dependent nucleation of dislocations from grain boundaries in the sample. THE ball mill has superseded stamps for the reduction of gold ores in most of the recently designed plants, partly because stamps are not suited to die fine grinding required for flotation, and partly to save space and construction cost. Experience with these new mills seems to confirm the idea that it is more difficult to recover bold from a ball-mill product than it is when stamps are used for crushing. Microscopical examination of particles of gold that have passed through a ball mill show that the gold has been pounded into exceedingly thin flakes coated with a talcy surface, making it more difficult to save by amalgamation, flotation, or concentrating. Bearing in mind that gold is extremely malleable, it seems reasonable that this should be so. Contrast the action in a stamp battery, where the crushing is by impact in the presence of mercury, to the grinding and rolling under pressure in a ball mill. It is well known that a better recovery can be obtained by panning or amalgamation from a sample of ore that has been crushed by mortar and pestle than from one reduced on a bucking board.

The clay particles of 2 microns or less required for modern paper coating are predominantly flat plates, lying smoothly on the sheet and producing a high gloss. Operating speeds of today's coating machines necessitate a clay composition of 60 and sometimes 70 pct solids as against the 35 to 40 pct required in the past. Since clays in suspension may solidify in flow, only those of intrinsically low viscosity can be used as high coating solids. THE literature of paper technology contains a number of articles having reference to developments in the field of coating and filler clays for use in paper manufacture. Much of this information has not been included in mining publications and has therefore not been readily available to all in the mineral industry. Recent developments in this field, including spray drying of clays, are presented here. U. S. Bureau of Mines figures for 1952 indicate that the paper industry consumes more than 50 pct of all kaolin produced and sold in the U. S. As most of the kaolin used by the industry comes from Georgia producers, the fraction of their output destined for paper use is thus appreciably higher than 50 pct. Small wonder that the kaolin industry, especially in Georgia, is highly sensitive to the quality requirements of paper mills and must respond promptly to technological developments in paper manufacturing. The paper industry itself is not the ultimate consumer. For the greater portion of the clay the end product is the printed page, and the demands of printing and publishing have sparked some of the technological advances in paper making which have, in turn, brought about methods employed in the kaolin industry. As compared with the product of 20 or 25 years ago, one of the most striking characteristics of the graphic arts today is the mass production of quality printing of fine pictorial work, much of it in full color. During this time periodicals with printing standards close to those of yesterday's slick-paper publications that were printed on a slow schedule and for a limited circulation have grown to the point where they go out to many millions of readers, often at weekly intervals. The complexity of technological improvements brought about by this increased circulation is probably not appreciated even by technical people, unless they have had reasonably close contact with the industry. The advance has come about through developments not only in the art of printing, but also in the field of paper making and even at the level of clay mining and processing. The smoothness required for faithful reproduction of the kind of printed matter under consideration is attained with a clay-coated paper. Since the distribution expense of the publication will depend to a great extent on its weight, the paper used must not be too heavy. This means a lower basis weight than was normal for conventional clay-coated papers some 25 years ago. And for this mass production market it becomes necessary to provide a paper having these and all the other required characteristics at a very moderate price—not the premium price conventional clay-coated papers formerly demanded. This challenge has been met by a new method of producing coated paper. In the past, application of clay coating to paper was a conversion operation, performed separately from the making of the base sheet. The newer development is called machine coating. Here application of the coating is an integral step in a continuous process by which wood pulp, clay, and other ingredients are manufactured into a sheet of coated paper. Many more problems are involved in this procedural change than are apparent at a casual glance. The coating operation, for example, must function at much higher linear speed than could be obtained with coating mechanisms previously employed. The application machinery developed to meet this requirement necessitated changes in composition of the coating color.* This created new requirements, summarized below, for the clay employed as coating pigment. In addition to smoothness, a relatively glossy printing surface is needed, and to a large measure it is the function of the coating clay to make possible the development of both these surface characteristics. Traditionally, pigments such as satin-white, prepared by reacting lime with paper-makers' alum, were used to assist in producing a high finish. However, economic considerations and others preclude large-scale use of such material in the new processes. Available high-fernperatzwe equilibrium measurements and other thermochernical data have been critically reciewed for sulfation reactions of the type: Recommended values for log K and ?Fo as junctions of temperature are given for thirty-six suck reactions involving twenty-six different metals. Methods of calculation and choice between conflict-ing data are discussed. SELECTIVE sulfation now enjoys a considerable renaissance as a metallurgical unit process due, in large part, to the available of the fluid-bed re- actor—a device capable of the close control of temperature and gas composition necessary for a successful sulfation process. An additional need, however, if sulfation chemistry is to be approached in a scientific manner, is a reliable body of data on the equilibrium and kinetics of sulfation reactions in simple and complex systems. This paper offers a critical review and compilation of equilibrium data on pure sulfates (simple systems). The last such review, by K. K. Kelley in 1935:30 has proven itself most useful, but the existence of many new data makes necessary a re-evaluation of the available information. THIS year's Chairman of the Mineral industry Education Division is, like his predecessors, no novice in that field, having been in 1928 Chairman of the Engineering Education Committee which labored so well that it was enlarged into a Division of the Institute's activities . For almost a quarter of a century lie has been a dean in mining and engineering schools, with considerable experience before that as a teacher. A native-born New Englander (June 23, 1881), he naturally went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he received the Bachelor's degree in mining in 1904. Just why a Fitchburg. Massachusetts boy yearned to he a mining engineer he has never explained, but why should any boy ever have to explain why lie wants t? be a mining engineer? Like the old rhyme about the reasons why a man should drink, "any other reason why" is adequate..

Introduction Drilling is the initial operating step In open pit mining. It goes hand-in-hand with the blasting operations to ensure adequately broken material for the excavation equipment employed. The drilling effectiveness is highly dependent on the quality of the drill evaluation. This discussion will center on the parameters that are needed to evaluate drill requirements for a new mine The procedure that is generated can, however, be used to evaluate whether to expand existing operations and replace existing equipment. Methods of breaking ground, other than blasthole drilling and blasting, such as ripping, will not be discussed. The importance of correct drill evaluation extends to the other facets of open pit mining. Inadequate fragmentation, the direct result of poor drilling and blasting techniques, results in oversized, hard digging for the excavating equipment. The result is higher secondary blasting costs, reduced excavation efficiencies, higher excavation costs, higher road repair costs, and higher haulage equipment costs. The main objective of evaluating drill fleet requirements, therefore, is to determine the equipment needed to minimize the operational constraints, caused by blasthole drilling, on other facets of open pit mining at the lowest cash flow costs.

IF New England were located in some distant and almost inaccessible region, there is no doubt that its mineral resources would have been ere this well developed and generally acknowledged, but laboring under the disadvantage of nearness, it has been neglected. Its surface, moreover, is not cut up by mountains and canons, and the remnants of many of the old ridges are extensively covered by glacial drift. Having for the past ten months been engaged in the development of a. mineral district in Southeastern Maine, I would take this opportunity to lay before the Institute sketches of results, and try to give some idea of the formations as found. The Sullivan Mining District extends from the town of Franklin, through Hancock, Sullivan, and Gouldsborough, from northwest to southeast, about sixteen miles. A general idea of this locality may be gathered from the map accompanying. (Fig. 1).

On weekends things get pretty interesting out our way because the fleet is usually in. Our No. 2 son is now based at New London, which Isn't far from here, and he brings his friends home. This is all aside from the point except that last Friday evening, Dave Meinhard, a redheaded nukie (nuclear sub crewman) from Indiana, commented on our late arrival home In obvious need of a pick-me-up. With some uncertainty as to the type, rate and scope of adoption of air pollution control regulations, and with limited information on the availability of low-sulfur fuels, it is possible at best to make only a rough assessment of the impact of such regulations on coal. It is apparent from the following discussion that regulations of the type already effective or being considered, if adopted and enforced on a widespread basis over a short-term period and if substitute fuels were available, both quantitatively and economically, could result in a loss of more than one-half of coal's markets. Depending on the areal sequence of adoption of such regulations, some areas would be able to obtain limited amounts of low-sulfur coals. Others would not. Because of the usually greater distances from the large industrial coal consuming areas to new sources of coal supply, and because of the higher mine prices for low-sulfur coals, the delivered prices of such coals as might be available would be much higher than those for high-sulfur coals. A large and sudden demand for low-sulfur coals would exert further upward pressure on prices.

PERHAPS the most important event f or exploration geophysics in 1940 was the publication of three textbooks : "Geophysical Prospecting for Oil," by L. L. Nettleton ; "Exploration Geophysics," by John J. Jakosky; and "Geophysical Exploration," by C. A. Heiland. The literature had grown so bulky, and such a long time had elapsed since the publication of the texts by Ambronn and Eve, that treatises covering exploration geophysics comprehensively in all its branches and giving literature and patent references were sorely needed. This need has been satisfied admirably in these textbooks, and geophysicists owe the authors a debt of gratitude. In 1940, geophysics came of age. A conference on applied nuclear physics was held at Massachusetts Institute of Technology from Oct. 28 to Nov. 2. Several papers on geophysical subjects were presented at this meeting. Geophysical activity has decreased in all parts of the world except perhaps in Canada where, under the stimulus of the war's increased demands, prospecting for oil has increased. However, even there the war has had a seriously adverse effect on prospecting for ores and upon the promotion of new properties, although activity in producing and near-producing mines has been stimulated.

(written discussion?).- I embrace ace the opportunity to take part in a discussion of Mr. Woodruff's paper because a successful discerning of what actually constitutes pet-roliferous areas from the geologists' standpoint is worthy of our endeavors, not only from the intellectual side, but also because it may lead, as Mr. Woodruff hopes, to the more certain establishment of principles that can be applied to other continents in exploiting them for petroleum. This discussion will also embrace the results of two other recent papers, one by Alexander W. McCoy and one by Maurice G. Mehl.1 Sources of Petroleum.-Mr. Woodruff is agreed that petroleum comes from plants and animals, or possibly from both, and that it has ac-cumulated by migration into reservoir rocks. These reservoir rocks must of course be porous to become catch basins for the oil and gas, and then, too, their present structures are variable, as they occur in anticlines, domes, terraces, etc. , The structures, he states, are more widespread than are the oil pools, and the same is true for the reservoir rocks. WITH the increasing importance of clay in drilling operations which demand more precise and exacting control over its behavior, there has come the realization that most of our present methods of control over many of its important properties still represent more of an art than a science. Such a situation with respect to a material of such industrial significance is unfortunate, and naturally many investigations have been conducted to improve our knowledge. In general, these investigations have revealed the complex nature of clay behavior and while sometimes they may not have seemed to contribute directly to a solution of the field operator's problems they have been of inestimable importance in bringing to light the broad fundamental scientific principles upon which must be based any effective working theory correlating the known facts of clay behavior and predicting profitable new lines of attack for its improvement.

The research here recorded was undertaken early in the present year, and has been prosecuted steadily for about eight months. While the work has been under my constant supervision and advice, the labor has all been performed by Mr. Sadler, to whom is chiefly due the development of the successive steps which have led to the final result. The process is better than I dared to hope, and we are able to place at the command of chemists and engineers interested in the matter an apparatus of continuous and uninterrupted action, and methods of analysis by which the daily averages of the two variable and inconstant factors of illuminating gas, ammonia and sulphur, may be determined with all needful accuracy, even by those little skilled in chemical manipulation, and with very little loss of time. This research has been carried out in the laboratory of the New Haven Gaslight Company.
