The lanthanide elements from lanthanum (atomic number 57) to lutetium (71) plus yttrium (39) are called the rare-earth elements; scandium (21) is chemically similar to yttrium and the lanthanides, but differs in occurrence. The rare-earth metals were divided into three categories by the chemist, Berzelius, in the early 1800s; however, modern usage defines only two groups. The cerium group is named after the most abundant -element and comprises lanthanum (57), cerium (58), praseodymium (59), neodymium (60), promethium (61), samarium (62), europium (63), and gadolinium (64). Traces of natural promethium were discovered in apatite in Finland (Erametsa, 1965). The yttrium group, also named after its most abundant representative, comprises terbium (65), dysprosium (66), holmium (67), erbium (68), thulium (69), ytterbium (70), and lutetium (71). Yttrium most closely resembles holmium in chemical properties, and occurs most commonly with the heavy lanthanides. The rare-earth minerals may be divided into cerium-group, yttrium-group, or mixed-group classes. A number of rare-earth minerals contain thorium and uranium, but these are variable in content and are not essential to the composition of the minerals. In monazite, a mineral that is a principal source of rare earths, the worldwide average content of thorium oxide is 7.2 % ; however, varieties of monazite contain as little as 0.001% and as much as 31.5% thoria. Monazite is the chief ore of thorium and, until recently, thorium has been the main product; the rare-earth metals were in fact byproducts. However, because of the great demand for rare-earth metals by the petroleum refining and the iron and steel industries since the early 1970s, the roles have been reversed so that thorium is now the byproduct. Uses A 9 to 1 mixture of yttrium and thorium oxides is used for high-intensity incandescent lamps and for high-temperature-resistant windows and lenses. Yttrium oxysulfide and orthovanadate, doped with europium oxide, are used in color television tube phosphors. Yttrium, as well as cerium, praseodymium, and samarium, is alloyed with cobalt to form strong permanent magnets. It hardens magnesium alloys and retards the oxidation of iron-chromium alloys. Yttrium-iron garnets are used for transmitting low microwave frequencies. Yttrium-aluminum garnets are used as host crystals for lasers and as artificial gems. Yttria also forms strong, stable, high-temperature refractories. Gadolinium-gallium garnets are used in substrate wafers on which bubble-memory films are deposited. Rare-earth chlorides, particularly of lanthanum, neodymium, and praseodymium, are used as catalysts for petroleum cracking. Mischmetal is used for lighter flints and to improve the ductility and impact strength of iron and steel alloys. Mischmetal also reduces the fatigue resistance of magnesium and aluminum alloys. Rare-earth oxides are used for polishing glasses and lenses. Individual or specific combinations of high-purity oxides are used as additives in glass to maintain or change its color, dispersion, or refractive index. High-purity oxide combinations are also used to color tile and to opacify porcelain enamel. Rare-earth fluorides and oxides are used in carbon-arc electrodes to provide incandescent white light. Lanthanum or gadolinium oxysulfide phosphors, activated with terbium, are used as x-ray screen intensifiers. Hydrogen can be stored by sorption on lanthanum-nickel alloys (Anon., 1979). Because of the necessity for taking regularly occurring open-flow tests in prorated high-pressure oil fields, much gas is turned to atmosphere by way of vertical vent lines leading away from the oil and gas separator. In the past, measurement of such gas has been accomplished by several methods, usually by use of the open-flow Pitot tube. The use of the closed-flow Pitot tube has been avoided apparently chiefly because the ordinary vent-line hook-up makes it necessary to apply the instrument closer to a bend, valve, or obstruction in the pipe than is recommended by rules of good practice. The many advantages that would result from the application of the closed-flow Pitot tube prompted investigation of the actual effect upon quantity rate of flow measurements computed from data obtained with the tube in a normal working position, which is closer to the tee at the base of the vent riser than is usually considered as giving highly accurate results. An effort Was first made to compare the results thus obtained to those under ideal conditions and at high velocities To make this comparison, knowledge of the characteristics of gas flowing at very high velocities is essential. Research for such information indicated that little or no work had been done that would give data necessary for such a comparison, therefore the problem was changed to a test designed to determine the relationship between quantity rates of flow as measured by an orifice meter and a Pitot tube placed at the center of a pipe eight diameters from a tee or ell at the base of a vent riser, through which gas is flowing under low pressures at very high velocities. To determine this relationship, a series of tests was run on a number of 8-in. iron-pipe vent riser., in which the Pitot tube data were taken at the position as stated above. Gas from a wet-gas gathering system was passed through an orifice meter setting and thence to atmosphere by way of the vents. Data were taken simultaneously from the orifice meter and Pitot tube from which computations for comparisons were made. The actual method of comparison is discussed later in this paper. For the past 20 years Alabama has probably led all other coal-producing districts in the proportion of coal prepared by wet washing. All rail mines, with one exception, and a high percentage of truck mines now wash all coal under 3 or 4 in. Most of this coal has been cleaned by jigs, though within the past few years one or more wet-table plants have been installed for cleaning some of the coal from practically all the major seams. These tables supplement either single or multicell jigs usually for one of the following purposes: (I) to wash the finer sizes of raw coal, (2) to rewash the finer sizes of washed coal after they leave the jigs, (3) to re-treat jig middling products. The main purpose of this paper is to present cleaning data and operating factors involved in the preparation by tables of the finer sizes of raw coal. The specific information and data pertain to the Mary Lee seam of coal as extracted at three of the mines of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, which produces coal for both byproduct coke-oven consumption and the general steam market. The Mary Lee seam has long been recognized by coal-preparation authorities as presenting a very difficult ash-reduction problem. Washing characteristics and physical structure of the seam vary widely. Its thickness ranges from 32 in. with no rock parting to 100 in. with from one to three partings. Over the entire field the bed contains bands of bone and rash. These are distributed throughout the seam cross section. A portion of this bone or bony coal occurs as definite bands I in. or more thick; however, some bone is interlocked as layers within the coal and consequently breaks into flakes when the coal is broken. This material is relatively high in ash and its specific gravity varies widely. It has been observed that in most cases in the washing of Mary Lee coal from 10 to 18 per cent of the raw coal is within +0.10 specific gravity of the attempted point of separation. Therefore with the average wet jig, only with extreme difficulty can a low-ash product be obtained without loss of much marketable coal in the refuse. Without entering into the controversial question as to whether modern washing equipment can efficiently handle simultaneously all sizes up to a given maximum, suffice it to state that the comparatively old-type jigs in service at the Alabama By-Products Corporation's mines could not clean the he sizes satisfactorily. Therefore, in 1931 that company installed six diagonal-deck tables at the Barney mine, which were installed as an addition to a complete plant cleaning all coal below minus 3 in. The primary washed product is shipped as steam coal and another portion may be prepared as washed nut for domestic trade. These tables are washing 9 tons per hour of raw coal sized to ¼ in. to o. The washed table coal is mixed with the 3 to ¼-in. jig product to constitute a 3 in. to o steam coal.

The flotation behavior of quartz in the presence of alkyl ammonium acetates as a function of alkyl chain length has been interpreted in terms of hemi-micelle formation at the solid-liquid interface. The van der Waals cohesive free energy that is responsible for hemi-micelle formation has been found from these results to be 1.0 kT per CH2 group. This is in excellent agreement with literature values obtained from research on the properties of micelles in bulk systems. Collectors of the type CH3(CH2)n-2CH2-P, where P is a polar group and n is the number of carbon atoms in the straight alkyl chain, will induce flotation of an appropriate mineral at lower concentrations as n increases. This reduction in collector concentration with increasing n has been reported for such systems as xanthates on sulfides1,2 and amines on quartz.' The effect of chain length of alkyl surfactants on such solution properties as conductivity,' surface tension,' and solubility6 and such interfacial properties of solids as contact angle7 and electrokinetic potential8 have received considerable attention, but only limited quantitative descriptions of the effects have been given. The electrokinetic studies of alkyl amine salts on quartz indicated that the solution concentration of collector at which the marked change in electrokinetic potential of quartz occurs decreases systematically as the length of the alkyl chain increases. The aim of the present work was to obtain a quantitative description in terms of current theories of flotation of the effect of the hydrocarbon chain of alkyl ammonium acetates on the flotation behavior of quartz. BASIC PRINCIPLES The marked changes in electrokinetic potentials of quartz in dodecylammonium acetate (DAA) solutions were postulated to result from the association of adsorbed collector ions into two-dimensional aggregates, called hemi-micelles.9 Subsequently, the rapid increase in flotation rate of quartz was shown to coincide with hemi-micelle formation." We would like to discuss briefly the concept of hemi-micelles in terms of recent interpretations of micelles in bulk solution. Micelle hypothesis: In dilute solutions, alkyl ammonium and related salts behave as ordinary strong electrolytes, but at a certain concentration there is a marked change in physical properties of the solutions, e.g., in equivalent conductance, transport number, freezing point lowering and viscosity. To account for these phenomena, McBainl1 introduced the concept of micelles, which are aggregates of long-chain ions. It is believed that the ionic heads of the constituent ions of the micelle are in contact with water, whereas the nonpolar groups turn away from it and are in contact with each other. Work must be done to bring these charged polar groups together, but energy is gained (i.e., so called van der Waals cohesive energy) when hydrocarbon chains are expelled from the water and allowed to associate. For a given polar group, the tendency to form micelles will therefore strongly depend on the hydrocarbon chain length. Theoretical treatments of micelle formation by Shinoda12 and Phillips13 and others lead to the following expression for the concentration at which micelles form (the critical micelle concentration or cmc) in aqueous solutions of long- chain electrolytes

ThIS communication presents the results of a determination of the permeabilities of hydrogen and deuterium in a iron from 360° to 560°C. Recently Heu-mann and primas' have given values of the diffusivity and solubility in a iron of the two isotopes from which the permeability can be calculated. The work reported in the present communication, however, is a direct measurement of the rate of permeation of the isotopes through an identical iron specimen under the same conditions, so that systematic errors can be minimized in the calculation of the ratio of the permeabilities—the value which is usually of main importance in establishing limits for isotopic differences in diffusive processes. Experimentally the procedure used was the usual one: a steady-state flow of gas produced by a pressure difference across an iron membrane was observed as the pressure rise with time in a previously evacuated, calibrated volume connected to the outlet side of the membrane, while a constant pressure of gas was maintained on the opposite inlet side. The membrane was a cylindrical tube 9.38 cm long, 0.730 cm inside diam, 0.187 cm wall thickness, fabricated of 99.95 pct vacuum-melted National Research Corp. iron (less than 0.003 pct C). One end was sealed by a heliarc-welded iron (99.95 pctj lid of 0.147 cm thickness; the other end of the tube was welded to a 304 stainless-steel tube (0.318 cm ID and 0.318 cm wall) which connects to a vacuum system and to the calibrated volume including a dibutylphthalate manometer. The temperature of the iron membrane was maintained constant to ±0.l°C and was measured with an iron-constantan thermocouple which was calibrated against a standard Pt/Pt-Rh thermocouple: the temperature variation along the length of the membrane did not exceed ±0.5°C. Hydrogen was allowed to pass through the membrane assembly for 72 hr at 615°C before permeability measurements were begun. The system was tested at temperature before and after the experiments by a substitution of helium for hydrogen in the inlet side; under these conditions the pressure rise observed in the outlet side was negligible at all times. The gases used for the permeability measurements were 99.95 pct Matheson prepurified H2 and 99.7 pct D2 (0.3 pct HD) from the Isomet Corp. The gases were dried with liquid N2 before use. In Fig. 1 the logarithms of observed flows, jt, for a pressure difference of 73.4 cm Hg are plotted against T-1 Each point in Fig. 1 represents the slope determined by a least-square evaluation of a plot of the pressure in the outlet side of the membrane against time, including at least two separate sets of observations. Each point in the figure has an uncertainty of ±0.6 pct arising from the experimental uncertainty in the pressure and time measurements. The standard deviation of the observed pressures from the straight lines in all cases is less than the experimental precision of the measurements. The observed flow, jt, includes a small but not negligible flow through the stainless-steel connection.

A NEW and interesting type of drier has been developed and operated at the Magna plant of the Utah Copper Co. for the past year for the drying of a filtered concentrate in the molybdenum recovery plant of this company. The several units installed have ranged from 12 to 30 in. in width, and from 14 to 30 ft. long. Their economy was immediately apparent after the first one was installed. The machine is not only low in capital cost, but has proved efficient for the drying of fine concentrate at low operating cost. The Utah vibrating drier consists of a steel conveyor trough supported on flexible reeds from a structural steel foundation anchored in concrete. The steel pan, which is also the drying surface, is vibrated by a heavy Utah electromagnetic vibrator fastened either to the head or discharge end of the pan. The vibration thus obtained agitates the material and causes it to be conveyed over the heated surface.

Albert Ludwig Serlo was born February 14, 1824, at Crossen-on-the-Oder. After completing his school-studies and his training as a mining official, he received in 1851 an appointment as Royal Manager of salt-works (Salinenfactor) and member of the Administratioll of Salines at Konigsborn, near Unna, Westphalia. The issue of new regulations for the training of higher State officials in the Department of Mining, Metallurgy and Salines, led him to pass in 1856 a special examination for the rank of Assessor, in consequence of which he was called to Berlin, to serve for a few months as an assistant in the Ministry of Commerce, which had charge of mining, etc. In the same year he became Bergmeister and member of the mining administration at Bochum, Westphalia, and in 1858 Oberbergrath and member of the provincial administration, called the Oberbergamt, having its headquarters located at Dortmund. The orebodies are long bedding-plane lenses of chalcopyrite and sphalerite, associated with garnetite masses. Most of the orebodies are within a 50-ft thickness of Cambrian limestone; other Paleozoic limestones and dolomites are locally metamorphosed but only slightly mineralized. Pre-mineral faults are numerous, but shallow folds were the main ore-localizing structures.

PARKER :-I think you will find that a little further east. CHAIRMAN JAMES F. KEMP :-In connection with Mr. Parker's paper, I would like to inject a little matter of history into our program here, as regards the founding of the Institute. The credit for the founding of the Institute really applies to miners who were engaged in the anthracite coal region. The three men who signed the circular for the call for the meeting which brought the engineers to Wilkes-Barre in May, 1871, were Eckley B. Coxe, Richard P. Rothwell, and Martin Coryell.

F. McMillan Stanton was born in New York City on May 23, 1865, the son of an English father and of a mother whose family was linked with that of Peter Stuyvesant. Mr. Stanton took his degree from the School of Mines of Columbia University in 1887, worked for two years as an assayer and surveyor and then went into the mining field on his own account. After a few years, he was offered a position with the Atlantic Mining Co., and began the work which was to continue with marked success for twenty-three years. In 1910, Mr. Stanton retired and went to Europe for a rest. Upon his return in 1914, he was elected treasurer and director of the Mohawk Mining Co., the Wolverine Copper Mining Co. and the Michigan Copper Mining Co., to which group was later added the White Pine Extension, Copper Co., and continued to serve these companies until the time of his death, Sept. 12, 1916.
