A week-long educational program and two-day symposium on applying the fluidizing reactor to the minerals industry drew more than 100 engineers to the University of Arizona at Tucson several weeks ago. The educational program, intended for engineers who will work closely with the reactor, attracted registrants from all sections of the U. S. and Canada. Meeting at the College of Mines on February 23 for a full week of intensive classwork, the engineers ploughed in with enthusiasm. Eight hours daily of lectures and laboratory work were followed by a generous helping of homework supplied by Professor Sigmund L. Smith, who directed the course. The study program was completed on Friday and the following Monday marked the start of a symposium of technical papers covering a wide variety of operations and new ideas.

IN what ways can conventional geophysical methods be used in the search for quartz-sulphide veins covered by several feet of overburden? The New Park Mining Co., in search of an answer to this question, empirically tested simple geochemical, electrical, and magnetic methods over known ore bodies and geologic structures. Geochemical methods were the only ones found to be applicable to direct ore search. Indirect uses were found for electrical and magnetic tests. Experiments were conducted in the southeastern part of the Park City mining district. Ore in this part of the district is found principally in steeply dipping veins which are localized along faults and fractures that cut Paleozoic sediments and quartz diorite intrusives. It is interesting to note that the selection of a particular machine is still bared on equipment preference by an individual company as well as proven performance of a particular machine for upgrading a specific material. IT has been shown by numerous studies that the orientations of new metal crystals are determined by the orientations of the crystals in the original matrix, whether these new crystals are formed by recrystalliza-tion, by precipitation from solid solutions, or by transitions in the solid state. The orientations of crystals formed by recrystallization of cold-worked worked metals that bear preferred orientations are occasionally simply related to the initial preferred orientation; often, however, the relation-ship is not simple, but complicated and obscure in origin.1 The orientations of crystals formed by precipitation from solid solu-tions have been shown by many studies in this and other countries to be determined by the orientation of the crystals of the solid solution stable at the higher temperatures, though here again complicated cases have been found and no general theory is available .2 Related to this latter class

Due to falling metal prices and depletion of ore reserves, lead- zinc mining in the Leadville, Colo., area gradually came to a halt in the 1950's. Exploration work continued, however, and by 1969 sufficient ore had been blocked out to warrant sinking a shaft and erecting a new concentrator to treat 700 tpd. The new shaft and concentrator were to be located in Iowa Gulch several miles east of Leadville at an elevation of 11,100 ft. The Leadville project is a joint venture between Newmont Mining Co. and Asarco, with Asarco being the operator. Design work began in the fall of 1969. Engineering was done by Torkelson Engineering Co. of Salt Lake City in conjunction with the central engineering department of Asarco. The plant was constructed by Stearns-Roger Corp. Construction began in the spring of 1970 and the plant went onstream in April 1971.

In view of the good results which have followed the wide discussion of the rail-specifications of the American Section of the International Association for Testing Materials, I now offer for discussion its specifications for steel forgings and steel castings. It is not necessary to emphasize the importance of reaching definite conclusions on these subjects. Engineers, consumers and manufacturers are alike interested in securing good, reliable, uniform steel. In this connection, I would call particular attention to the important paper read by Mr. C. H. Ridsdale, last September, before the Iron and Steel Institute, as bearing on them; and, for convenience of reference in the discussion, I append the Table in Section VI. of his paper, on a Manifestations, Classified mider Heads of Faults of Different Types. appearing after Treatment by the User, for Tracing their Probable Source."* The discussion of these specifications will be practically a continuation of our former discussions on "The Physics of Steel." We have passed through a period in which the chemical composition of steel has received the greatest prominence; but failures of steel forgings and castings of the best chemical composition have shown that we could not control the quality of the finished product by the chemical composition alone. It must be admitted that differences in the physical properties of the steel, greater than those due to small variations in composition,are produced by heat-treatment, both in connection with the mechanical work of forging and otherwise. The present result is a strong tendency to deem the heat-treatment more important than the chemical composition. I think the mean course is the safer. Of the several characteristics of a coal that influence its suitability for use in a given piece of burning equipment, the clinkering and slagging characteristics of the ash of the coal are highly important. They determine the maximum rate at which the coal may be burned on a stoker or in pulverized form without difficulty from damage to metal parts, from erosion of refractory walls, or from stoppage of gas passages by accumulation on the tubes. They also determine the minimum rate at which a slag-tap furnace may be operated without difficulty in removal of the ash in fluid form. Need for a Better Criterion In common with other producers and users of coal, the Northern Illinois Coal Corporation has long used the available methods for the measurement of the clinkering characteristics of coal ash, chemical composition and fusion temperature of the ash, as criteria for the selection of coal that would suit the particular requirements of its customers. These two available criteria have greatly helped in the problem of selection but it is unnecessary to dwell upon the fact that they are not completely adequate for the purpose. The composition of the ash and its clinkering tendency vary widely over the company's mining area. In a certain period, some years ago, an unusual amount of severe clinkering of the ash of coal shipped made extremely acute the need for a better criterion of the clinkering that might be expected. It was also desirable that the criterion result from a reasonably rapid method, so that the clinkering characteristics of the coal would be known before shipment. Complaints on the severe clinkering of the ash came from only a fraction of the output of the mine but the occurrence of the clinkering seemed quite unpredictable. Attempts to relate the chemical composition of the ash and the fusion temperatures to the clinkering were unsuccessful. Coal from the area of the mine in which the fusion temperature of the ash was the lowest gave the least trouble from clinker-ing. Chemical analysis of the ash from that section giving the most trouble showed high contents of iron and low contents of silica, but frequently these were not greatly different from those of coals that gave little trouble from clinker. Aside from the clinkering difficulty, the coal was quite satisfactory. The ash content was normal and high rates of burning could be obtained, but again and again such severe clinkering would occur that the furnace would be shut down because of the accumulation of clinker. Examination of the clinker from the customers' plants showed that the clinkers that adhered to the grates and fouled the fuel beds were hard, flat, dense, and usually dark in color. Coal that was satisfactory gave clinkers that were softer, bulky rather than flat, of low density, and usually lighter in color.

THE authors have studied the problem of temper brittleness in steel1 employing an internal friction method. The specimens are in the form of wire, 14 B and S gage (0.064 in diam), 6 in. long. It was very desirable to have an apparatus to test the wire specimens for temper brittleness without making standard notched-bar Izod or Charpy impact tests. Such a device would have two favorable advantages: the first is that no standard impact specimen would be necessary, thus saving time and labor; the second is that there would be a direct correlation with internal friction results, thus eliminating the size factor if standard impact specimens had to be used. A search was made without result to find a commercial apparatus for this purpose. The literature was surveyed to investigate if such a test had been utilized. No such work has been reported in the literature; however, zapffe2 has described an apparatus used for testing for hydrogen embrittlement in

PREPARATION of mechanically loaded coal in mines where seams contain considerable impurities is a subject that requires careful consideration before machines are installed, unless provision is made at the tipple for its preparation. Conditions vary a great deal in the different seams, so much so that a mechanical loader may be unsuccessful in one seam and yet the same machine may make good in another where conditions are different. The effect of impurities in the coal seam on mechanical loading will also vary according to the thickness of the seam. In thin seams impurities will be more difficult to remove than from thick seams, as will appear later. For the past several years the New River Co. has done considerable experimenting with loading equipment and during this process has changed from one machine to another.

The general method which has been followed since the time of Heinrich Rose, and perhaps before, for the determination of phosphorus in iron and steel, is to dissolve the sample either in nitric acid, aqua regia, or some other oxidizing agent, in order to convert the phosphorus into phosphoric acid. In 1832 Rose* recommends HNO3, or aqua regia, preferably the former. Wohler, in 1854,† directs that the iron should be oxidized by burning in a stream of oxygen for the determination of carbon, and the resulting oxide of iron containing all the phosphorus as phosphoric acid be treated as an ore. In the fourth English edition of Fresenius' Quantitative Analysis,† pp. 666-667, we find directions to dissolve the iron in aqua regia or bromine; and, coming down to more recent times, we find F. A. Cairns § directing the employment of a boiling solution of potassium chlorate and hydrochloric acid for the oxidation and solution of the sample to be analyzed. It is unnecessary to multiply quotations from the literature of the subject, though they might be extended almost inclefinitely, since it would only be a repetition of the above mentioned series of methods in one form or another; and the references given have been selected to show how little essential variation there is in the type-methods of solution used. In fact it seems to be universally accepted as a necessary first step in the determination that some such method of solution should be followed. The object of this paper is to bring to notice a method in use at the Cedar Point laboratory of Witherbees, Sherman & Co., for determining the phosphorus in the ore mined at Mineville, N. Y. This ore is magnetite, with a gangue containing crystals of apatite. In 1886, Mr. H. F. Dawes, then head chemist at the works, suggested that as all the phosphorus seemed to be in the apatite, it could be obtained in solution by dilute nitric acid. After some experimenting the following method was adopted, and has proved invaluable for rapidity and ease; half a dozen determinations requiring very little more time or trouble than one. From + to 10 grammes of ore are weighed into a 150 c.c. beaker; 50 C.C. hot water and 10 c.c. strong nitric acid are added; the beaker is covered and the contents are boiled for 1/2 hour (10 minutes sometimes proves sufficient; but 4 hour is safer). The bumping which ensues if more than & gramme is used need cause no trouble. The hot solution is filtered into a 250 C.C. beaker. The filtration and washing (with hot water) proceed rapidly, as the magnetite itself is but slightly acted upon. After the addition of 15 C.C. ammonia and 15 c.c. nitric acid, the solution is cooled to 45' C., and from 15 to 40 C.C. of molybdic acid solution is added and stirred vigorously. In 5 minutes the precipitate will be down, and the determination can be finished by any good method. At Cedar Point the method more commonly used is weighing as yellow salt. Good washed filter-paper is used, No. 0 Swedish being preferred; and dozen 3 1/2-inch filters are numbered and dried and weighed at 110°C. These are always kept in stock. The yellow salt is filtered on one of these, washed with dilute nitric acid (2 per cent. by volume); dried for 1 hour at 110' C., and then weighed, 1.63 per cent. of weight being calculated as phosphorus. THE decision of the lower court (United States District Court for the Southern District of New York) in the suit of the Dwight & Lloyd Sintering Co., vs. John E. Greenawalt has been affirmed by the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. In the original suit, infringement of seven patents was alleged, these covering the process of producing a sinter .out of finely pulverized metalliferous ores as practised in shallow pans operating intermittently in distinction to the Dwight 6: Lloyd continuous machine. The court found that the long delay in bringing suit precluded any recovery of profits from the defendant under the basic down-draft sintering patent, although Dwight & Lloyd are recognized as the inventors of this' contribution to the art and its .importance is acknowledged.
