SINCE the comprehensive paper of Moore, Beckin-sale, and Mallinson,' little consideration has been given to the mechanism of mercury stress cracking of copper-base alloys, apart from extensive work on metallurgical and fabrication variables employing mercurous nitrate as an evaluation test. However, with the phase diagrams now available and the recent considerations of interfacial tension at grain boundaries, developed by Smith,2 it appears that the elements of a detailed solution to the problem are available. The facts that require explanation are: 1—Pure copper is not embrittled by mercury, with or without an applied or residual stress. 2—Cu-Zn and other copper-base alloys, in excess of some undefined solute concentration, are embrittled provided an external or residual stress is acting; cracking is not observed in the absence of stress. 3—The path of fracture is invariably intergranu-lar. 4—Copper and copper-base alloys do not dissolve readily in mercury at room temperature.' Consideration of the Cu-Hg phase diagram% hows that, at room temperature, solution of copper in mercury is probably limited by the formation on the surface of a microscopically thin layer of inter-metallic compound, CuHg, having a very limited range of solubility which effectively restricts diffusion of copper and mercury. But, above 150°C (the highest peritectic temperature) copper solid solution is in equilibrium with a liquid Hg-Cu solution and, consequently, copper should dissolve freely in a large volume of mercury with the formation of an equilibrium dihedral angle at grain boundaries in contact with the liquid phase. Depending on the magnitude of this angle, mercury will or will not penetrate the solid phase along grain boundaries and spread over grain faces. Thus the measurement of the dihedral angle of grain boundaries in equilibrium with the liquid phase above 150°C should indicate whether copper is intrinsically resistant to embrittlement by mercury. In view of the fact that mercury is appreciably soluble in copper, it may also be anticipated that diffusion of mercury will take place at higher temperatures in the absence of the intermetallic compound and possibly at a more rapid rate along grain boundaries than through the grains, resulting in a Cu-Hg alloy of unknown properties. In the case of brass, the ternary system Cu-Zn-Hg is involved and, from the resistance of brass to general solution in mercury at room temperature, it is probable that a compound of limited solubility range also exists, similar to the binary Cu-Hg sys- tem. Also, compared with copper, a change in the dihedral angle at grain boundaries in contact with mercury may be expected to result from the addition of zinc to copper. The preceding generalizations appear to be confirmed by the following experiments. Experimental Results Oxygen-free copper wire, annealed at 700°C for 3 hr in copper foil, was immersed in mercury at 170°C, with and without an applied stress. After 24 hr immersion, specimens which were spring loaded to a nominal stress of 10,000 psi had not failed, and there was no apparent embrittlement as indicated by a 180" bend around a diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the wire (0.125 in.) : General solution of the surface had taken place, indicated by a change in diameter of the wire, and the resulting structure of the surface is shown in Fig. 1. It is apparent that angles have developed at grain boundaries and examination at a high magnification indicates that the angle is in excess of 120°, completely excluding penetration of mercury. Double roasting of sinter carrying a high percentage of lead concentrates, gave rise to the problem of removing the sheets of metallic lead formed in the wind boxes. The solution of the problem has been found in the water sealed wind boxes. The metallic lead is granulated and can be removed without seriously interfering with the operation of the machine and eliminates necessity of men going in wind boxes with air guns. THE practice of double sintering the charge for lead blast furnaces, which is now standard throughout the lead smelting industry, has introduced the rather difficult problem of cleaning the wind boxes on sintering machines used for the final pass. Two factors have more recently accentuated this problem: (1) the growing demand of workmen for better working conditions and less arduous labor, and (2) the growing dearth of crude lead ores and the improved grade of lead concentrates demand a charge carrying the maximum percentage of lead. One to 2 pct of such high lead charges (30 to 40) when processed on machines in reasonably good condition will pass through the grates and report in the wind boxes. One-half to three-quarters of this material will be metallic lead reduced by the coke breeze or other fuel mixed with the charge. This lead forms large cakes or chunks which are hard to remove and which substantially increase the time the machine is out of operation for cleaning the wind boxes. A high lead fall can reduce the operating time 30 pct. As a specific example, a 30 ft machine having 63 in. pallets, and equipped with three conventional wind boxes, requires 3 to 4 hr per day for removing the accumulation in the wind boxes when operated as a final pass machine. This same machine when operated on raw charge requires less than an hour per day for cleaning. To eliminate formation of large chunks of lead in the wind boxes of the final pass machines and time lost in cleaning the boxes, R. C. Rutherford of the Chihuahua smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co., devised and patented* a wind box having a water bath to granulate the lead as it falls from the grate bars. Later, C. H. Harris of the San Luis plant made and patentedt an improvement on Rutherford's device in which the water bath seals the wind box in a manner permitting the latter to be readily cleaned without destroying the vacuum. The first machine to our knowledge to use the water bath box was at the Chihuahua plant along the lines of the Rutherford patent. In 1942, a machine was placed in operation at the El Paso plant which incorporated the features of both Rutherford and Harris. This machine is 40 ft long equipped with pallets 63 x 24 in., and having 4 wind boxes 10 ft 4 in. x 7 ft 2 in. x 51 ft 3 in. in size (fig. 1). In June, 1965, Sanderson and scully5 reported at the Conference on Environment Sensitive Mechanical Properties of Materials at the Research Institute for Advanced Studies at Baltimore that thin foils of titanium could be prepared by chemical polishing in a mixture of 44 pct HF and 73 pct HNO3 in the volumetric ratio 2:3. The technique is simpler than that since reported by Rice and Orava. As-received annealed titanium (containing 0.8 pct Fe and 30 ppm H) in the form of sheet 0.05 cm thick is placed in the solution and moved up and down. The reaction is violent but suitable foils are obtained very easily and consistently. A typical micrograph is shown in Fig. 3. The small precipitates were not identified. Yamane and ueda6 observed many spotlike features which they referred to as small dislocation loops. While their spots may be due to the reaction of the warm foil with the air as suggested by Rice and Orava, the precipitates in Fig. 3 are also found when foils of titanium are prepared by electro-polishing at low temperatures and subsequently examined in the electron microscope without any inter- mediate warming. Furthermore, they are not a surface effect. It is necessary to add that alloys of titanium cannot be so easily thinned by the chemical polishing solution described above since it contaminates the a, phase with hydrogen and produces y hydride. These matters are described at length in a paper7 and their relevance to stress corrosion is considered elsewhere.'-* Author's Reply The authors are grateful to Dr. Scully for bringing to our attention his hitherto unpublished technique for thinning unalloyed titanium, and deeply regret the unintended apparent duplication. The chemical thinning solution (7 parts HNO3 and 3 parts HF, by volume) reported by us is the same as that with which, for some period in the past, we had experienced success in the preparation of foils from single and polycrystalline niobium. Its subsequent effective application to titanium was a logical step, which, clearly independently of Scully, was conceived by Mr. Rice, to whom full credit is due. A few comments are warranted concerning some of the details of the preceding Discussion. It is evident to the discerning reader that the two thinning techniques under consideration are chemically almost identical, and in that sense are equally "simple". The chemical aspect is, of course, the one of primary importance in both communications. Thereafter, the relative simplicity is dictated by the mechanics of the actual thinning operation selected by the individual investigator. Our standard dimpling, or dishing, procedure was chosen with a view toward providing, for the electron transparent areas of the sample, the maximum protection from extraneous deformation during handling. That the long, straight dislocations visible in Scully's electron micrograph of a seemingly recovered structure closely resemble handling dislocations would tend to indicate the merit of our adopted technique. Features similar to those which Scully has attributed to precipitates, without any apparent diffraction contrast confirmation, were not observed in any of our clean foils taken from annealed or deformed specimens. This was admittedly somewhat surprising since the 3700 ppm (nominal) Fe in the A-70 commercial-grade titanium examined should have given rise to TiFe precipitates. Presumably these existed but were un-resolvable. Curiously, Scully's "precipitate1' density is fairly high although the iron content quoted was less than one-fourth of that in our material. One is forced to conclude from the evidence that prior thermal and mechanical treatments are responsible for the two different types of structure observed.

1st. The fine iron ore is mixed with a sufficient proportion of fine coking coal, and is coked in any of the ordinary methods for making coke. The effect of this is to convert the iron oxide into sponge in such a shape that the usual trouble of oxidation is avoided. 2d. The resulting mixture of coke and sponge is melted down ill an ordinary cupola, the coke furnishing more than sufficient fuel for that purpose. I may briefly point out here that in the first place the iron is sponged, and this sponge, as is well known, contains no phosphoras or silicon when the reduction takes place at a low temperature; and in the second place this sponge is melted down in a cupola in which there is no zone of reduction for phosphorus or silicon, and that con . sequently the resulting iron should be free from both of these impurities. 3d. The liquid sponge, now carburized, is run into an open-hearth furnace, where the requisite degree of hardness or softness is obtained by adding some of the fine ore, and the usual dose of ferromanganese, I have merely given above the rough outlines of the prows, bat it is my intention, as early as possible, to bring the process more fully before the Institute.

The accompanying Fig 1 is a graphical scheme of intermediate accuracy for expediting interconversions of mol, weight, and volume percents. This chart consists of a family of curves of mol or atomic or volume percent plotted against weight percent, each curve in the family providing for a certain ratio of molecular or atomic weights or densities. Thus, the whole range of variations is presented in a very familiar format, and the conversion is effected simply by choosing the proper curve and reading off the required values. An entire series of conversions for a given binary system can be found by following the appropriate curve. It is interesting to examine the analytical geometry of the plots. The curves, which must fit into a square and all join at the 0 and 100 pet points, may be shown to be hyperbolas with their centers on the extension of the diagonal of the square which they intersect. Data are presented which show that fractions of varying densities from the same coals are oxidized at different rates by nitric acid. From oxidation data, the approximate quantity of "bright" and "dull" components may be calculated. Definite relationships between oxidation rate and rank are shown for density fractions from at least two bituminous coals. IN 1945, the Alabama State Mine Experiment Station initiated a program on the determination of fusain in certain coals of the state.1 Because of the lack of equipment and personnel necessary for microscopic examination, the chemical method2 was used exclusively. During studies of the distribution of fusain in fractions of various sizes and densities on a medium volatile coal, the author noted a higher rate of oxidation of the nonfusain part of the coal in the lower density fractions and the difference in rate became more marked the shorter the oxidation period used. Since durain and other "dull" components of coal have been reported3,4,5 to have higher densities than vitrain and the bright components, it appeared probable that the observed differences in rates of oxidation in the different density fractions were due to variations in petro-graphic composition. Such effects have been noticed by other workers.2,3 In order to obtain further evidence on this point, several Alabama coals of different rank have been separated into three or more fractions on the basis of density and their rates of oxidation determined, using the procedure specified for the determination of fusain, except that measurements were made at short time intervals as well as for the longer periods specified in the regular procedure. Significant differences in the rates of oxidation of the nonfusain part of the various fractions have been observed, and it is believed that studies of this type may make possible the identification of individual petrographic components or lead to methods for their semiquan-titative estimation. Properties of the Coals: Analyses and some properties of the whole coals studied are given in table I. The range in rank of the coals is not the widest possible within the state, but samples of the low volatile coals that occur in thin beds in the northeastern part of the state, were unavailable. The Clements bed is not, at present, considered workable. The coal is of medium volatile rank, quite friable, and very strongly swelling. Analyses of different size fractions show that the larger sizes are of higher rank than the smaller ones. Material passing the No. 50 sieve (all sieve sizes refer to the U. S. Standard Series) is close to high volatile A in rank, except for the size passing a No. 200 sieve, in which fusain is partially concentrated. Because of the variation in rank of the sizes of Clements coal, oxidation studies were made of two widely different size ranges. The + 1-in. material was crushed on rolls to about 1/8 in. and separated into five fractions by float-and-sink treatment in a benzene-carbon tetrachloride mixture. The — No. 4 + No. 8 and the — No. 4 + No. 50 size ranges tested overlap but the latter size was studied last with the expectation that it would include more oxidizable material than the first size. This proved not to be the case. Yields and properties of the specific gravity fractions oxidized are shown in table II. Milldale bed coal probably represents, as nearly as it is possible to do so, the "average" coal of the state. The material passing a No. 4 sieve was the only size range oxidized. THE occurrence of this gas, in quite appreciable. quantities, has been observed for many years in its escape along the creeks of Western Pennsylvania, and more recently, in much larger quantities, from the oil wells in and near Venango County. Within about five years several gas wells have been struck, from which the gas has escaped continuously in prodigious quantities and at great pressure. During the last year a systematic attempt has been made to utilize the flow of gas from one of these wells, and results have been reached which were quite unexpected. This well, near Leechburg, Armstrong County, is about twenty miles northeast of Pittsburgh, on one of the side tributaries of the Alleghany River. It had been drilled in search of oil to a depth of 1250 feet in 1871, but none was found. A great flow of gas was developed, however, accompanied by a slight spray of salt water, and this has continued with little or no diminution to the present time. The gas in its escape has been discharged through a 5-inch pipe, and at a pressure of from 60 to 80 lbs. per square inch, but no exact determinations, either of the pressure or quantity, have been made. The rolling mill of Messrs. Rogers & Burchfield is on the opposite side of the river, and it has been for some years devoted to the production of fine grades of sheet iron from charcoal pig metal, by puddling and in knobbling fires. The usual weekly product of the mill has been 30 tons of No. 30 tin plates, and 50 tons of No. 24 to 28 sheets. The well was bought by this firm for $1000, and the gas is led across the river, a distance of about 500 feet, through a 3-inch pipe. It is distributed through half-inch pipes, and at a pressure of about 45 lbs. per square inch, to several of the furnaces, but a large fraction of the total flow of gas is still wasted at the well. No essential alteration in any of the furnaces has been found necessary in the use of the gas fuel, except to brick up the fire-bridge and to put in the gas and air pipes. The old grate used for coal is loosely covered with bricks and cinder, so that a slight percolation of air may take place through them. The gas is admitted through a half-inch pipe, and blows toward the fire-bridge through 18 or 20 one-eighth inch jets. The air is blown in at about 2 lbs. a

Many shafts have experienced stability problems during shaft sinking because the designer failed to fully appreciate the conditions he would encounter. Some shafts have failed during construction because the ground supports provided to compensate for the expected conditions were inadequate despite the most careful investigations and analyses. To design a ground support which is ultimately safe to achieve stability during shaft sinking would be too costly and impractical and, therefore, many shafts would simply not be constructed. The design of a ground support for shaft sinking based on an intimate understanding of the expected ground behaviour and stress development during excavation combines the art of mining with the science of geotechnical engineering. Where no historical design data is available, the designer of the ground support must: 1. classify the rocks and soils and assess their behavioural characteristics; 2. calculate the primary and secondary stresses; 3. design and/or select a ground support system which will ensure stability of the excavation during shaft sinking.

Results of a pilot operation in the Carlsbad Basin are discussed. After hydrafracing between wells, a block of potash was removed by solution techniques. The distance between frac wells was about 200 ft, the thickness of potash mineralization, 5 ft. By proper manipulation, a feed of concentrate brine was obtained. The ex-periment showed that the thin-bedded potash could be removed by the solution techniques. The details of well construction, method of operation, and removal rates are discussed. Continental Oil Co.'s laboratory research on the fundamentals of potash solution mining has been expanded by means of a series of field tests, and subjects such as well completion and hydraulic fracturing were added to the investigation. Both single-well and multi-well systems were studied in the field work. Discussion Background: The current paper discusses one field test in which potash was solution mined by a two-well system from a thin sylvinite zone. The potential economic value of solution mining evolves from (1) the use of drilled holes and solution techniques instead of excavated shafts and caverns and (2) the ability to mine both land and marine deposits through any type of overburden geology and below conventional mining depths. Recent interest has been focused on potash' and other soluble minerals, such as trona. Solution extraction minerals, such as copper and uranium, are also worthy of important consideration. In addition, many of the techniques are directly applicable to the construction of horizontal underground storage carverns in salt. There are two general approaches to potash solution mining. The first is to mine on a single-well basis, in which the same well bore is used for both injection and production. This method is slow, and the areal extent may be quite limited in other than very thick ore zones. The second, and the preferred approach, is to mine on a multi-well basis in which the solvent is circulated between wells. This technique, if applied in a manner which allows the ore zone to be mined from the bottom upward, results in nearly all the solution taking place from the cavern roof. Salt removal rates, therefore, are very much higher than from a single-well system.l Wells can be interconnected into a multi-well pattern by several means. One is to join single-well caverns in the lower part of an ore zone. Another is to use the hydraulic fracturing techniques developed in the oil fields.' We preferred the fracture approach because of its potential for creating the greatest area of salt exposure. Test Site Description: The field tests were conducted in New Mexico's Carlsbad Basin, where the potash deposits are flat and uniform over reasonable distances. Here, 12 potash zones are present in the massive Salado Salt section. The specific target was the Third Ore Zone which is about 4 ft thick at our location and about 1150 ft deep. The test pattern was designed in the shape of an equilateral triangle with a fourth well located in the center, 200 ft from each of the vertex wells. This configuration allowed the ore zone to be hydraulically fractured from the center well with good assurance that the fracture would intersect the bore of at least one outside well. Several multi-well test patterns would be available if the fracture connected all wells. Well Completion: Surface casing was set in the top of the Salado Salt at 600 ft to shut off water flows from the surface sands, and the salt section was drilled and diamond-cored to a point below the Third Ore Zone. A drilling fluid made of diesel oil with a small amount of emulsified water was used to drill and core the salt. This fluid was highly successful in preventing enlargement of the drilled hole and in promoting good core recovery. The three outside wells were completed by setting 51/2-in. casing at the base of a streak of anhydrite about 20 ft above the ore zone. Pipe was set high so that the intersection point of the fracture could be detected even if the fracture migrated above the ore zone as it progressed outward from the center well. The center well itself was completed by cementing 51/2-in. casing through the Third Ore Zone. Cement bond logs run on the center well have shown excellent bonding. Fracturing Practice: A mechanical tool was used to cut a notch through the casing and into the salt at a point about 1 ft below the ore zone in the center well. The purpose of this notch was to fix the point of fracture entry into the salt. The fracturing was done with water at injection rtaes as high as 30 bbl per min. The salt parted at 1450 psi; and it required only 5 min for the fracture to reach the well which was 200 ft to the south. It took about 5 min more to reach the other two wells. Caliper surveys were run to locate the point of fracture entry in the three outside wells. The fracture appears to have drifted downward slightly, entering the outside wells at the top of a streak of carnallite 8 or 9 ft below the ore zone. A cross section of the wells selected for the multi-well test is shown in Fig. 1. The figure includes KC1 values based on core analysis and the trace of the fracture plane between the wells.

In this paper it is shown that the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field for the area of the United States can be very closely approximated by assuming it to be the sum of the vertical components of two magnetic fields. The first of these is the field of the centered dipole described by J. Bartels,l the axis of this dipole intersecting the earth's surface at two antipodal points, the one in the Northern Hemisphere being at latitude 78.5°N. and longitude 69°W., and the dipole having such strength that the vertical component of its field at its axis pole is 0.63 oersted. The second field is that due to a second dipole situated halfway between the center of the earth and a point on the earth's surface at latitude 38.5°N., longitude 91.5°W., the axis of this dipole being along this radius, the south pole being toward the surface, and the dipole being of such strength that its field at the point on the surface mentioned above is 0.069 oersted. Using the field computed on this basis, tables of latitude and longitude correction factors were computed and are included in the paper. It is also shown that the secular variation in the earth's magnetic field may be roughly accounted for by assuming it to be due to motion of the second dipole described above. Although there is an error in the equation used for computing the strength of the field due to the second dipole, the distribution of the field computed is very nearly that of the assumed arrangement of dipoles. Subsequent work by the author reveals that minor changes can be made in the location of the second dipole, which will make the computed field fit the observed field even more closely. It has also been found2 that the vertical component of the field may be represented equally well by a purely empiric relationship.

In this paper it is shown that the vertical component of the earth's magnetic field for the area of the United States can be very closely approximated by assuming it to be the sum of the vertical components of two magnetic fields. The first of these is the field of the centered dipole described by J. It is also shown that the secular variation in the earth's magnetic field may be roughly accounted for by assuming it to be due to motion of the second dipole described above. Although there is an error in the equation used for computing the strength of the field due to the second dipole, the distribution of the field computed is very nearly that of the assumed arrangement of dipoles. Subsequent work by the author reveals that minor changes can be made in the location of the second dipole, which will make the computed field fit the observed field even more closely. It has also been found2 that the vertical component of the field may be represented equally well by a purely empiric relationship.

measurements of the anisotropy in Young's modulus produced in copper by rolling 95 pct reduction in thickness below room temperature have been carried out in order to study the dependence of the texture on rolling temperature. The results clearly show the transition from a copper-type texture to a brass-type texture as the temperature of rolling is lowered. The intermediate textures observed can be described very well as a simple mixture of the two terminal textures. These results cormbined with other texture measurements make possible afresh review of the experimental facts velating to rolling textures in fee metals and, as a consequence, a critical examination of the current theories is presented. PREVIOUS experiments have shown that the transition from the copper- to the brass-type rolling texture is clearly displayed and can be quantitatively analyzed by measurements of the anisotropy of Young's modulus.' Application of this method to the Cu-Zn alloy system showed that the description of the texture transition as a gradual rotation of the grains from the orientation characteristic of the copper texture to the {110}(112) texture of brass2 was inconsistent with the data. Instead, the data suggested that the texture within the transition region could be described as a simple mixture of the two terminal textures.5 Unfortunately, it was difficult to establish this point conclusively because of the inadequacy of corrections for the composition dependence of the single-crystal elastic constants. Since a rigorous establishment of the nature of this texture transition is essential to our understanding of the formation of rolling textures in fee metals, it is clearly important to undertake an investigation in which the composition dependence of the elastic constants would not enter. A suitable composition-independent texture transition is provided by the well-established variation in the rolling texture of copper with rolling temperature. This temperature-dependent texture transformation has been studied by smallman' in several fee alloys and by Müller5 and others"' in copper. They observed that the texture characteristic of copper rolled at room temperature changed to a brass-type texture when the rolling temperature was lowered to 77°K. Although it is not possible to decide unequivocally from the published pole figures whether or not the 77°K rolling texture of copper is entirely of the brass type,' this complication does not affect the main purpose of the present investigation. In addition to establishing the nature of the texture within the transition region, the modulus data should also provide a determination of the temperature at which the transition occurs as well as the temperature range over which the transition extends. This information when combined with the modulus data on Cu-Zn alloys would then provide a considerable body of new information on textures in fee metals. Since these modulus results and the data obtained from pole-figure studies must be internally consistent, it is appropriate to compile a brief summary of the experimental observations based on all available methods rather than on the pole-figure data alone as has been done in the past. The primary purpose of such a summary would be to yield a more precise definition of the experimental facts on the rolling textures of fee metals, and thus greatly facilitate our evaluation of various proposed theories in this field. The final section of this paper is devoted to this compilation of consistent, experimental facts and their application to the various theories. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two 18-lb ingots of cathode copper of 99.99 pct purity were induction-melted under a nitrogen atmosphere in a graphite crucible and chill-cast into a steel mold. The ingots were repeatedly cold-rolled and annealed (I hr at 500°C) into slabs about 1 1/8 in. thick. Blocks 3 1/4 in. wide, 2 1/4 in. long, and 1.000 in. thick were machined from each slab. The rolling schedule used was the same as in the previous investigation1 and the final thickness of the sheet was 0.050 in. with a rolling reduction of thickness of 95 pct instead of 97.5 pct as in the previous work.' The compositions and temperatures of the cold baths used for the low-temperature rolling were as shown in Table I. After each pass the rolled strip was immediately immersed in the cold bath for about 1 min or until the bubbling of the bath had subsided. The modulus data were taken within 2 hr after the rolled strip was warmed to room temperature for the first time, so that effects due to recrystallization were minimized. The modulus specimens were in the shape of flat bars, 3 in. long, 4 in. wide, and 0.050 in. thick, cut with their long dimensions oriented at 15-deg intervals between the rolling direction and the transverse direction. The values of Young's modulus were deduced from measurements of the frequency at which these long narrow bars were set into longitudinal, resonant vibration as previously described.9 To excite the mechanical vibrations in the specimen, an electromagnetic drive similar to that employed by Thompson and lass" was used. The major portion of the production of the Gulf Coast area, represented by South Texas and South Louisiana, comes from the flanks of well-defined salt domes. This oil, containing an excellent lubricating stock, ranges from 17° to 28° Be. gravity. Some lighter oil is encountered but the life of such fields is, in general, an open question. In fact, there are few light-gravity fields which have proved of much value. In all of the fields water encroachment, or, more properly, water produced with the oil, is a vital factor. After the first head of high-pressure gas is removed, ever-increasing percentages of water appear, and naturally the life of the wells is materially affected thereby. The sands are, as a rule, extremely fine, very soft, and must be carefully excluded from the hole by the use of fine screen to prevent sanding up. All sands are tipped at such extreme angles as to make coring essential for the location of water strata, oil-bearing sands and important shale. beds. Even with modern coring, the correlation of logs is a difficult problem. Due to the fact that the bulk of the oil is refined for its lubricating properties, little attention has been paid to losses by evaporation in the field. This is largely influenced by the fact that the major companies have set a price schedule, showing but two grades, "A" and "B." The average oil company, therefore, does not attempt to use the gas-lift but relies primarily on the air-lift and then only on wells considered to be particularly adapted to its use, namely those capable of producing large quantities of fluid and yet not having sufficient "kick" to flow. Furthermore, as the gas contained in the reservoirs is mostly ricthane such gas being very quickly vaporized and produced in large quantity in the early life of the fields, there is little gas left after the first flush flowing period of the wells. In fact, it is very generally conceded that gas is a precarious fuel to depend on in any of the coastal fields. This situation largely accounts for the fact that air, as the lifting medium, is almost universally used. In the average field, wells are drilled on the flanks of the domes in close proximity to one another, largely on account of the extreme dips of the formation and "town lot" leases, and space to set up machinery and

The first is usually done by the crew chief, or at least checked by him. The computing system usually originates in the head office, occasional consultations with the party chief providing modifications as necessary to meet special conditions. The computations and plotting are done by the party computer, with possibly one or two assistants if the calculations require much time. Picking the Rejleclions Marking of the reflections on the records is perhaps the most important step and the one most likely to determine the reliability of the final results. Making the "picks" is important because most of the problems that come up in practical work are connected with the problem of what can be done with poor records. The lack of any definite criteria by which to judge what are good and usable reflections is at the bottom of the difficulty. Give the same set of records to several people to mark and they will probably come out with a variation in the number of reflections per record that are deemed usable. With good records the correct picks are obvious to all, but with poor records experience seems to be the only reliable guide as to what picks are reliable and what are merely born of imagination and desperation. Experience in marking records and seeing how the structures eventually check out is more important than training in physics or geology. Different types of equipment and shooting methods may produce records quite different in appearance, from the same territory, and the computer can do his best work with records of a type on which he has had considerable experience, and has learned the limitations and shortcomings as well as the virtues of the data with which he is working. Reflections may be picked for dips only, in which case the particular reflection picked is not recognizable with certainty on records from any other spread. WHEN using an optical goniometer to determine crystal orientation' it is advantageous to use a preferential etchant so that the etch pits have plane faces which are parallel to crystallographic planes, all of which are of the same "form." "Westinghouse Silver Etch" (WAg), a preferential etch for germanium, is made up as follows: 40 ml of 49.7 pct hydrofluoric acid, 20 ml of 70.7 pct nitric acid, and 40 ml of distilled water containing 2.0 g of silver nitrate. Examination of metallographs of WAg etched surfaces (Fig. 1, for example) indicates that, regardless of crystal orientation, the faces of the etch pits are (111) surfaces. Optical goniometer examination of these WAg etched surfaces also indicates that the faces of the etch pits are (111) surfaces, i.e., all bright reflections are from (111) planes. When using an optical goniometer of the type described by Barrett,' not only (111) reflections from a WAg etched germanium surface but also other reflections of lower intensity will be observed. These latter reflections can cause confusion. We have used an optical goniometer made from a war surplus astrocompass and a galvanometer lamp. The reflections are observed by using the goniometer in a darkened room and letting the reflected light be in- cident upon a piece of white paper. The resulting decrease of goniometer sensitivity enables (111) reflections only to be observed. This in turn permits the crystal orientation to be determined in a matter of minutes, since only two measurements are necessary. The authors wish to acknowledge the help received from R. E. A device developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines for the detection and quenching of coal mine explosions suffers from the inability to discriminate between the light emitted from hydrocarbon combustion and that emitted by electrical sparks and miner's cap lamps1. Since the quenchant device is activated by an internal explosive charge, the possibility of serious injury to nearby personnel demands a detector which can reject false signals. Described herein is a detector which can provide a rapid response signal upon the emission of radiation from hydrocarbon combustion and concurrently reject spurious signals from such sources as sparks and cap lamps. It was suggested that a detector might be developed to operate on the principle of monitoring the radiation intensity emitted from two separate spectral regions and ratioing the intensities2. A series of experiments was conducted for combustion of methane-air mixtures which demonstrate the ability of such a detector to discriminate between combustion and spurious signals. Experimental Apparatus A cylindrical (3.8 in. diam by 12 in.) stainless-steel shock tube test section was used as a combustion chamber. The test section was equipped with quartz windows (2 in. diam) on either side, a piezoelectric pressure transducer, and two steel electrodes. A 10-kv capacitor discharged across the electrodes provided a submicrosecond duration spark to ignite the gas mixture within. The desired partial pressures of methane and air were obtained by using a Wallace and Tiernan 0-800 mm Hg pressure gauge with which pressures could be determined to an accuracy of % mm Hg. All tests were conducted with a total pressure of 1 atm in the chamber. To

By confining the electrolytic reduction of TiCl4 to the interior of a porous basket-cathode the electrolyte between the anode and the cathode can be kept free of reduced chlorides of titanium eliminating undesirable reactions of reduced titanium chlorides with brickwork or oxygen in the cell atmosphere. Semiwalls are not needed. Operating conditions are given and discussed. Titanium yields based on TiCl4 introduced are 93 pct. Cell voltage and amperage characteristics are adaptable to multiple cathode-series cell urmngements. EXPERIMENTS conducted in the National Lead Co., Titanium Division, Research Laboratories showed that titanium metal could be deposited in an electrolytic cell in which titanium tetrachloride was introduced through a tubular cathode.' The reduced chlorides as formed were confined to the vicinity of the cathode. They were reduced to form a cocoon-shaped growth of sponge titanium metal at the end of the cathodic tube below the surface of a sodium chloride-strontium chloride electrolyte. No diaphragm was needed.' Although high-purity, coarse crystalline metal was produced in the cocoon growth, the yields of metal removed from the cell, based on the amount of titanium introduced as TiCl4, were usually only 40 to 60 pct. The growth of the cocoon deposits was away from the cathodic tube for introduction of TiC14 toward the anode following the flu lines. The reduced chlorides of titanium diffused through the deposit and were reduced to titanium electrolytically within the deposit or on the outer surfaces. Deposition within the pores of the cocoon was detrimental to further deposition because it plugged the passages used by the reduced chlorides to diffuse away from the point of titanium introduction. As plugging due to deposition in the pores proceeded, the reduced chlorides in the center of the cocoon would force their way out by forming a channel and would escape from the vicinity of the cathode without being reduced to metal. Some work had been done previously1, 2 which indicated that if the end of the cathodic tube for introducing TiC14 was surrounded by a screen connected to the tube so that it too was cathodic, growth could be made to occur within the screen. Direction of growth was observed to be from the screen toward the point of TiCl4 introduction. Through a series of design modifications a cathode evolved which consisted of an introduction tube surrounded by a perforated metal basket as shown in Fig. 1. Modifications of this design are described in Refs. 3, 4, and 5. This basic cathode designa" was incorporated in electrolytic cells containing graphite anodes and constructed of high-silica brick refractory for containing the electrolyte (see Fig. 2). The inner crucible was surrounded by insulating brick and the entire unit contained in a welded steel shell. Suitable cooling chambers with inert gas atmospheres were devised so that the cathode could be removed from the cell without exposing the deposit to air while hot. Various alkali and alkaline earth chlorides were used as electrolytes.
