FOR the production of carbides, various furnace types are available, especially those using arc, resistance, and high-frequency heating. Selection of a specific means of heating depends primarily on the material to be treated and the physical properties of the carbide produced. In the present case, zirconium carbide had to be prepared on an industrial scale as a raw material for the production of anhydrous zirconium chloride. Considering that a rather expensive pure oxide was to be used, the arc-furnace treatment recommended for zircon sands in a previous publication' was ruled out because of the considerable volatilization and dust losses caused by the blast of the arc. For this reason, either high-frequency or resistance heating seemed to offer more promise. Since there was not enough capacity of the former available, resistance heating was chosen. It was first thought that the Acheson silicon carbide furnace would be suitable for the present purpose, but the voltage in such a furnace, in which the current passes through the batch, varies from 220 to 75 v from the start to the end of a run. This variation is so great that a special tap transformer would have been required. Trouble was also expected by local melting of the carbide. Pure zirconium carbide melts at about 3527°C, but the melting point is brought down to 2427°C, according to Agte,2 when an excess of 6 pct C is present in the carbide. This we found confirmed by experiments in a high-frequency furnace. Excess carbon is needed in the batch to obtain a complete reduction. Fusion of the charge would cause great difficulties in an Acheson-type furnace because of the good electrical conductivity of the carbide as compared with that of the loose batch. Also, fused carbide is much more difficult to chlorinate than the spongy product that can be made in the radiation furnace described below. It was apparent that, to obtain a good-qual-ity zirconium carbide, the heat input would have to be well-controlled. The hairpin-resistor principle seemed to offer possibilities in this regard, and a furnace of this type was therefore developed. The advantages of the hairpin-resistor radiation principle have been discussed in previous publications, and a split-tube graphite-resistor furnace," now increasingly used in various laboratories, as well as a centrifugal quartz melting furnace4 of this type, has demonstrated the usefulness of this heating method. The hairpin-heater element has the following definite advantages over a straight resistor of the type used, for instance, by Georges:5 Its resistance is four times greater; it can expand freely; it is sturdier because of the larger diameter, and it has a larger radiation surface; there are no hot contacts that might wear out or overheat; only one clamp is used which permits assembling all electrical leads at one side of the furnace, making the other sides easily accessible to the operator. The shorter element and its larger diameter permit greater concentration of heat. The furnace developed is shown in fig. 1. The box (I), made of 2 1/2-in. graphite plates, has inside dimensions of 23x17x16 in. It contains the briquet-ted batch (2). The box is embedded in lampblack (3) up to the cover plate. The cover plate contains an opening for the gas escape (4) and for the observation hole (5), which permits measuring the temperature with an optical pyrometer. The cover plate is embedded in charcoal (6). The lampblack is contained in the insulating brick lining (7), held in the 1/4-in. sheet steel box (8). The graphite box is set on two rows of triangular graphite bars (9). The hairpin-heater element (10), the dimensions of which are given below the main drawing, extends horizontally in the graphite chamber and radiates freely on the batch. A graphite tube (11) keeps the lampblack from falling into the slot. The split electrode, which in reality is turned 90" against the drawing, is so arranged that the slot is vertical. The long awaited new Mining Engineering Handbook is taking shape under the leadership of A. B. Cummins, Chairman of the Editorial Advisory Board for the SME Mining Engineering Handbook, and Ivan Given, Editor-in-Chief. The last Mining Engineers' Handbook, the Peele edition, published by John Wiley and Sons, was last revised in 1941. This book was and still is a virtual mine of information although a good deal of its content, especially the cost tables, is becoming rather antiquated. The new one-volume work will contain approximately 1600 pages and be divided into 36 sections. A stability theory is developed for miscible liquid-liquid displacement within a porous medium. In the usual case considered, a high-density high-viscosity "oil" is displaced downdip by a low-density low-viscosity "solvent'! Perturbation methods are used to find the conditions under which the spreading mechanism changes from the stable dispersion process to unstable viscous fingering. We find that instability is conditional, that there is a dependence on the shape of a disturbance leading to a"diameter" effect and that very difficult experimental scaling problems may result. A useful consequence is the definition of a minimum "slug size" for stable miscible displacement. This should make possible optimum use of the solvent process for oil recovery. The results may apply to many situations in which one fluid displaces another of somewhat different fluid properties within a porous medium. INTRODUCTION The process of miscible liquid-liquid displacement looked very favorable when it first received serious consideration as a means to increase petroleum recovery. Some early laboratory results were interpreted to mean that only a small "slug" of solvent was needed, perhaps 2 to 3 per cent of a hydrocarbon pore volume. This "slug" could recover the oil in an entire reservoir provided the fluids remained miscible.1,2 Only a slow growth of the "mixing zone", or gradual transition from oil to solvent, should occur. This would follow naturally from mixing by a dispersion mechanism such as that described by Scheidegger.3 And, indeed, laboratory cores have shown this kind of behavior provided solvent viscosity was at least as great as that of the oi1.2,4-6 The same kind of behavior has also been observed with solvent viscosity lower than that of the oil after the distance traversed became large. Not all laboratory results have been this favorable, however.7-9 Mixing zone growth may become proportional to the distance traveled rather than the square root of this quantity. Such behavior accompanies high rates in short systems of large diameter, provided the viscosity ratio is adverse. If this more rapid spreading were to persist in a reservoir, the solvent requirement for miscible "slug" displacement could exceed 30 per cent of a pore volume. There is considerable economic importance in the difference between 3 and 30 per cent solvent. A 1ogical conclusion is that two different kinds of flow behavior are possible, with each kind leading to a different result. One kind gives efficient displacement, the other does not. In the efficient case, the solvent bank spreads out only by the mechanism we have termed dispersion. Under these conditions, displacement is as near piston-like as possible. In the second kind of flow, found only with adverse viscosity ratios, viscous fingering occurs. That is, permeability variations cause a small finger of low-viscosity solvent-rich fluid to move ahead of its average position within the mixing zone. This creates a path of low resistance to flow, and an even greater amount of solvent-rich fluid follows. Thus, the process is autocatalytic. Once started, the fingering mechanism rapidly becomes dominant. The question to be answered is this. Under what conditions will each of these two different kinds of flow occur? In particular, what conditions denote the transition from dispersion to viscous fingering as the solvent spreading mechanism? The answer may tell us whether or not the desirable, near piston-like miscible displacement process is practical. An answer to this problem can be obtained from theory by the use of perturbation methods. The procedure is as follows. We first formulate a mathematical representation of the system. Then a small disturbance (or perturbation) in solvent concentration profile is introduced and observed to see what happens. Unstable flow is indicated when a small disturbance will grow larger. This will lead to eventual viscous fingering. If on the other hand the disturbance dies out, the displacement is stable. In this latter case, with dispersion as the spreading mechanism, near piston-like displacement is possible. Although prediction of failure of rocks may be ultimately possible without knowing in detail how failure occurs, understanding of this process is certainly of fundamental interest in rock mechanics. Of the various failure mechanisms, probably brittle fracture is of greatest interest. Recent reviews have brought this subject nearly up to date (Hock,1 Price,2 and Jaeger 3) and here, we summarize certain recent developments. As our understanding of brittle fracture is derived almost solely from laboratory studies this will amount to a review of certain laboratory experiments. New studies in four areas are pertinent; these concern 1) the volume changes which accompany brittle fracture, 2) the propagation of cracks in compression, 3) certain frictional characteristics of rocks and minerals at high pressure, and 4) the law of effective stress for crystalline rocks. Our objective here is less to present an entirely consistent, complete picture of how a rock fractures than it is to emphasize gaps in our understanding and, thus, suggest areas that need further study. Progress is still painfully slow in this field and perhaps this approach will stimulate new work. OBSERVATIONS Although the behavior of large rock masses is most often the concern in rock mechanics, the number of large-scale experimental tests is still vanishingly small. Our experimental observations arc, by and large, still made on small, relatively flaw-free, rock samples. Here also we report the behavior of small samples.

DuXing 1942, Louisiana attained the rank of fourth among the great oil-producing states of this country. Its present prominent position is the result of an orderly and systematic program of exploitation with emphasis on conservation. Even before the functioning of M-68, the Federal spacing order, development and production in Louisiana were regulated by various acts of legislation, the most recent of which and by far the most effective is Act 157 of 1940. Under the authority of this act, it has been possible for the Department of Conservation to hold many public hearings and thereby to secure data and evidence regarding the feasibility of issuing rules and regulations for development of various oil and gas fields in the state. As a result of information compiled at such public hearings, many orders have been issued by the Commissioner of Conservation that have in most cases provided reasonable solutions to the problems that arise in the exploitation and development of fields in this state. Probably one of the most effective powers granted the Commissioner of Conservation in the state of Louisiana has been the authority to provide for fieldwide unitiza-tion and pooling of condensate fields. This has led to the erection of huge cycling plants in Louisiana, which permit the most efficient recovery of the liquid content of the reservoirs, and further conserve most of the gas reserve that undoubtedly will be of considerable future value. Many months have passed since various orders of the Department of Conservation were put into effect, and all are accomplishing their purpose; namely, the elimination of waste. Although the effectiveness of these orders provides considerable satisfaction to the members of the Department of Conservation, it is also a tribute to the members of the oil and gas industry in Louisiana, who, in addition to providing carefully prepared technical data, have also given unstinting cooperation and have thereby enabled the Department to cope intelligently with the many problems. Production On Dec. 31, 1942, oil and/or gas was being produced in 50 parishes, or 78 per cent of all the parishes in the state. Thirty-three of the parishes produced oil and gas, 12 produced oil, and 5 produced solely gas. This is indeed an enviable record for any state. However, it is reasonable to assume that eventually all parishes in the state of Louisiana will be productive. From a geological viewpoint, there is no apparent reason to assume otherwise—a point that a11 operators seeking oil and gas production in this state may well bear in mind. Twenty new fields were found during 1942—a rate of discovery that does not compare favorably with the 30 new fields found during 1941. The record of discoveries in Louisiana during 1942 is further disappointing when it is realized that 8 of the 20 new fields discovered were gas fields. The Institute assembled in the room of the Board of Trade, Mercantile Library Building, on Tuesday evening, May 20th, at 8 o'clock P.M, Hon. W. D. Kelley made an address of welcome to the Institute, which was responded to by President Raymond. The Council reported, through the President, that the Institute had during' the past year, held three meetings, in New York, Pittsburgh, and Boston. Thirty-nine papers of great professional value had been read, and sixty-nine members and twenty-four associates added to the Institute. The finances of the Institute were in good condition, the report of the Treasurer, Mr. T. D. Rand, showing a balance on hand of $1569.74. The report was accepted. Prof. L. Gruner, of Paris, France, and Prof. Peter von Tunner, of Leoben, Austria, having been proposed by ten members of the Institute, and approved by the Council, were unanimously elected honorary members. ABOUT the beginning of 1930, coal preparation had reached the stage where the cleaning of coal by liquid or air had become the order of the day. Since that time many new preparation plants have been installed in spite of the years of depression in the coal industry, and this is indicative of a trend wherein the coal producer found it expedient to manufacture a cleaner product in order to compete with other fuels. It was also about 1930 that, because of the difficulties encountered with fine coal in cleaning plants, dust collectors came into use. Both cleaning plants and dust collectors, therefore, were much discussed at the engineering meetings of the early 1930's. During these meetings the many advantages to be gained through the use of dust- collecting systems were pointed out by Hebley,1 Appleyard2 and others. The great possibilities of new markets for this product were emphasized and discussed at the same time; however, the disposal of the collected dust remained a problem. Since the purpose of dust collecting is to improve the preparation and, consequently, the salability of the coal, it seems illogical to return the collected dust to any of the coal being prepared for market use, as is done in preparation plants that include dust-collecting systems. The logical thing is to dispose of the dust in some useful and practical manner outside of the tipple. As a practical matter, this can be done in one or both of two ways; either by consuming the dust at the mine's own power plant or by marketing the dust direct to the consumer. The latter method not only offers the greatest opportunities, but is the most important, because of inequalities that may exist between the quantity of dust collected and the consuming capacity of the mine's power plant. In considering the more important marketing possibilities, we are confronted immediately with the problems connected with the handling and transportation of so fine a material. It is this problem, rather than the problem of finding new markets, that has been responsible for the lack of progress in the matter of dust disposal. It is the purpose of this paper to point out again some of the potential market out- lets, and also to describe an existing system of handling and transporting coal dust. To the best of the writer's knowledge, this is the first and only operation in this country that has handled fine-mesh coal in bulk so-ton lots direct to the consumer. POTENTIAL MARKETS FOR FINE- MESH COAL DUST In general, the potential market outlets would include any operation of which the pulverization of coal is a necessary part. To be more specific, a few of the better known operations of this type must include: colloidal-fuel plants, briquetting plants, “sea coal” distributing plants, water-purification plants and obviously, pow-

Rock engineering involves uncertainties which are large and difficult to quantify. The traditional design approach to these uncertain- ties has been conservatism, and has been satisfactory to the extent that failure rates are reasonably small. Yet, a price is paid for conservatism, and that price is not always small. Today, reliability and risk analysis are finding use in rock engineering. The introduction of such methods, usually under the name 'probabilistic design,' is controverisal. However, if the jingoism of both sizes in this controversy is stripped away, it appears that new insights about uncertainty in rock engineering are emerging.

Twitchell: While I was attending St. Albans High School, my uncle, who had been the American Consul in Kingston, Ontario, for many years, told me of the excellent mining school there. He also introduced me to a Canadian mining engineer who sparked my interest in mining by noting the possibility of achieving personal success without always being under salary. Well, that appealed to me, so I applied to the Kingston School of Mines at Queen's University.

IT is well known that the oxide of beryllium was identified as a new "earth" in 17971 and the metal first isolated in 18272. The history of the many difficulties encountered by early investigators, the laboratory achievements of Lebeau3, Fichter4 and Oesterheld5, and the eventual development of methods for commercial production are well covered in the literature, particularly in the authoritative published work of Siemens and Halske6 reviewing their comprehensive investigation of the element. Accordingly it has seemed desirable to restrict this paper to the properties and uses of beryllium and its alloys.

Gradual shifts in the center of ore production have dictated three moves for the Pend Oreille Mines & Metals Co. plant. Capacity has grown from 300 tpd to the present 2400 tpd, and the gravity process used at the original Josephine mill has long since given way to improved flotation practice. The Josephine mill, operated in World War I and converted to flotation in 1927, treated 200,000 tons of ore rating as high as 16 pct Zn. By 1935 extra ore handling warranted construction of a new mill on a lower level, and capacity was raised from 300 to 800 tpd.

Just three years after researchers announced its development, Dravo is putting the finishing touches on a new $60-million Thiosorhic lime mine/kiln complex near Maysville, Ky. Electric utilities in western Pennsylvania and Ohio have already signed long-term contracts for over three-quarters of the projected 907 000-t/v (1-million-stpy) production. Thiosorbic lime, a flue gas desulfurizing agent, proved in industrial testing that at high emission levels (greater than 3000ppm SO2) it could be twice as effective in SO2 capture as conventional lime, while eliminating the major problem of scaling and plugging of scrubber equipment.

IT IS difficult to know just when a hoisting rope should be removed from service and a new one substituted. It is desirable to utilize the full life of a rope but, on .the other hand, the damage and possible loss of life, resulting from delay in replacing it may amount to many times the cost of a new rope. In the present methods of inspection the inspector must rely upon accumulated experience and a certain sixth sense or intuition in addition to any rules that may be laid down regarding the number and distribu-tion of broken wires. This condition does not neces-sarily arise from lack of interest among users or makers of rope, but is due rather to the lack of satisfactory or adequate methods for testing ropes to determine their exact condition. The main difficulty in devising a physical test lies in the fact that a number of causes, all operating in different ways, contribute to the deterioration of a rope in service, and affect not only the external conditions but also the inner structure of the material of which the rope is constructed. Wear and broken wires on the outer part of the rope are not difficult to detect, but a test is needed which will clearly indicate the presence of broken wires in the interior portions and the change in strength due to alterations in the structure and properties of the material itself.

During the year 1934 there were no new or extraordinary developments in the proven fields. With few exceptions all companies operating in these fields continued intensive exploitation programs on their old properties in an attempt to maintain the normal production of former years. In one or two instances these exploitation activities have had such marked success that the total production for 1934 slightly surpassed that of 1933. The most striking increase in production is that shown by the Kilometer 27 pool of the Comodoro Rivadavia field. However, this increase cannot be attributed to intensive drilling, since it is the result of a more uniform daily withdrawal distributed among all the productive wells. The Province of Salta also showed another increase, so that, judging from the statistics of the past three years and in view of proposed exploration projects, the future may reveal some interesting developments in this province. One of the most interesting occurrences in Salta is the discovery, though not yet considered commercial, made at Macueta, near the boundary line between the Argentine and Bolivia. This exploration well was drilled by the Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey and is the northernmost exploratory well in the republic. The oil from this well is of the same type and commercial value as that produced in the San Pedro and Lomitas fields. The producing horizon is also the same as that in the other Salta fields; that is, the Paleozoic Permo-Carboniferous.

ABOUT the beginning of 1930, coal preparation had reached the stage where the cleaning of coal by liquid or air had become the order of the day. Since that time many new preparation plants have been installed in spite of the years of depression in the coal industry, and this is indicative of a trend wherein the coal producer found it expedient to manufacture a cleaner product in order to compete with other fuels. It was also about 1930 that, because of the difficulties encountered with fine coal in cleaning plants, dust collectors came into use. Both cleaning plants and dust collectors, therefore, were much discussed at the engineering meetings of the early 1930's. During these meetings the many advantages to be gained through the use of dust-collecting systems were pointed out by Hebley,1 Appleyard2 and others. The great possibilities of new markets for this product were emphasized and discussed at the same time; however, the disposal of the collected dust remained a problem. Since the purpose of dust collecting is to improve the preparation and, consequently, the salability of the coal, it seems illogical to return the collected dust to any of the coal being prepared for market use, as is done in preparation plants that include dust-collecting systems. The logical thing is to dispose of the dust in some useful and practical manner outside of the tipple. As a practical matter, this can be done in one or both of two ways; either by consuming the dust at the mine's own power plant or by marketing the dust direct to the consumer. The latter method not only offers the greatest opportunities, but is the most important, because of inequalities that may exist between the quantity of dust collected and the consuming capacity of the mine's power plant. In considering the more important marketing possibilities, we are confronted immediately with the problems connected with the handling and transportation of so fine a material. It is this problem, rather than the problem of finding new markets, that has been responsible for the lack of progress in the matter of dust disposal. It is the purpose of this paper to point out again some of the potential market outlets, and also to describe an existing system of handling and transporting coal dust. To the best of the writer's knowledge, this is the first and only operation in this country that has handled fine-mesh coal in bulk 50-ton lots direct to the consumer. POtential Markets for Fine-mesh Coal Dust In general, the potential market outlets would include any operation of which the pulverization of coal is a necessary part.
